Discussing Challenge Run Viability

It’s as the title says. In the past few days, there’s been a challenge run idea kicking around in my mind- completing the current main storyline of Arcane Odyssey without ever setting foot on a boat. Exceptions are made for boats that are part of the map/terrain, but boats that are capable of moving cannot be stood on, period. The full list of restrictions just for the people curious:

  • Under no circumstances are you allowed to set foot on a player or NPC boat. This includes: –Any boat owned/spawned by a player, be it your own or one spawned by another player (Edit for clarity, you are allowed to spawn your own ship but you are not allowed to stand on it when it’s spawned) –Skyships* (Edit: While my first goal is to make this challenge possible, my second would be to cut down on the grinds to make this potential route speedrun viable. If banning skyships wastes too much time on the grind, then this note can be potentially removed) –Pirate boats –Grand Navy boats –Assassin boats –Ravenna boats –Merchant boats –Atlantean boats (though it’s unlikely you would even make it there to do so)
  • You are not allowed to receive aid from any other players, everything you do must be done on your own. Aid is defined as: –Receiving items through a trade –Receiving galleons through direct payment –Having another player bring you sealed chests/cargo (Any sealed chests or cargo you turn in must have been obtained and carried by you and you alone to a shipwright) –Picking up galleons dropped on death by another player –Having another player craft jewels for you (this would go against receiving items in a trade but still worth mentioning) –Eating a portion of a meal placed by another player –Drinking a dose of a brew placed by another player –Having another player throw a beneficial potion effect at you, or hitting you with gel for the purposes of receiving beneficial effects from it) –Receiving knockback from another player’s attacks for the purposes of transportation (looking at you max knockback wind mages) –Having another player help you defeat a boss or any other enemy in any capacity, including damaging it or luring it. –Having another player sink a ship so that you can claim the loot from it
  • Just to keep things above board, glitches and flings should probably be banned? Especially since they might get patched out over time
  • Ships that are part of the terrain and are unable to move are freely walkable, though if you want to be a stickler you can always exclude them

I’m writing this at 2:30 am so I probably missed something, I’ll go back through this tomorrow to round things out

right now the major sticking points I can see are the sky islands and the ravenna escape, so its brainstorming time

ice magic solos this entire challenge ngl but:

I think this should be the only exception because this single rule makes the entire run impossible to complete.

i was actually thinking grinding for dodge reflexes and abusing the heck out of gale potions

Pretty sure most people who’d want to do this challenge (well, the sane ones at least) wouldn’t have the patience to actually try and somehow grind their way to level 120 without the usage of cargo (because boats are banned) so I think skyships should just be allowed.

i want to see if its possible to do something like this realistically without skyships too, but if its not possible then that can be an exception

Also, I just realized another massive problem.

the “sink the ravenna sailboat” quest.

I think there might be a way to ignore this one (I.E: spawning the boat might also spawn the sailboat) but if not, we got trouble.

:frcryin:

and even if you, miraculously did waste hours of your life to get dodge reflexes, I don’t think you’d ever be able to get far enough to reach any important sky island like the elius arena.

spawning your boat isnt against the rules, setting foot on it is, you can spawn it and ditch it and then sink the ravenna ship by killing the guards on it

as for the sky island problems, getting to cirrus does give you access to aeroplast for t4/t5 gale potions, when using that in combination with a weapon/fstyle airstall maybe ?

you would need way too many gale potions to actually get to skycliff island, not to mention the 2 other sky islands you have to visit.

it would just be insanely annoying to have to farm hundreds of aeroplasts to make gale potions to have a chance at making your way to a sky island. If you fall down, you’ve just wasted a lot of time and effort.

the ravenna escape is not too big of an issue. Just spawn a rowboat or something and use long ranged attacks with a decent aoe on the sailboat. After that you can just swim to the marker.

Just get magma/ice magic

Tedious- but possible

theres a reason this is a challenge run

out of curiosity, do the teleport skills on weapons consume air movement options when used in the air? If they don’t you might not even need to farm aeroplast, you could just hop servers until you find an underwater ruin and farm amphibious blooms, then you could make a bunch of tier 2 gale potions with uncommon drinkable catalysts and that might be enough to stall out the timer so you can use something like sword draw: mirrored river other weapon skills t hat give distance could also work, and having equipment for agility would be helpful

havent used weapons in ages but i think they do

I have an idea for getting stuff in the dark sea Since islands and stuff only spawn when you sail in, maybe you could raise and lower your sails of your boat while keeping up with it using ice magic so you can get to islands and stuff

the primary objective is story, but I could imagine a secondary objective after that to complete as many quests as possible

Wind knockback builds and boxing supermans are smoking around.

can you knock yourself back with wind?

No, but friends can. Make them throw you very far and high and then use boxing superman build.

i would think you make 2 characters 1 wind mage and an platform creating second just to make you capable of going to the sky ilands and move past the water the wind mage serves to knock you into sky ilands with knockback gems the only problem is that intensity is hard to get without general argos equips so you may not get enough to go to the sky

Roblox: Arcane Odyssey - Complete Sailing Guide

Sailing is at the core of Roblox Arcane Odyssey since the islands are separated by a huge ocean that can't be crossed just by swimming.

Quick Links

How to buy ships, how to hire a crew, ship part guide, how to fight other ships, tips for sailing in arcane odyssey.

If you take one look at the map of Roblox Arcane Odyssey, you'll be able to see the sea separating different islands from each other. In the first few minutes of the game, you'll have to use your Rowboat to get to Redwake Harbor. Rowing and Sailing are at the core of this open-sea game.

RELATED: Roblox: Arcane Odyssey - Beginner's Guide

You can have a total of three ships apart from the Rowboat, and there are plenty of enemies roaming around the sea that'll take their chance to sink you. The game is quite punishing when it comes to damage to your ship, so you can't be careless with it.

You can't use the Rowboat to go around the map in Arcane Odyssey since it doesn't have any spots for Cannons or other ship parts . Moreover, it takes stamina if you want to row faster, which can be quite frustrating to deal with if you're sailing for a long distance. Thankfully, you can easily buy your first ship with a sail.

There are Shipwright NPCs located on most of the islands in Arcane Odyssey. You'll be able to see a marker for these NPCs when you zoom in on an island . Islands like Ravenna can even have two Shipwright NPCs in different cities. Head over to the Shipwright NPC in Redwake to buy a Sailboat for 300 Galleons.

You can easily make 300 Galleons by helping people around Redwake and doing the fishing quest a couple of times . You can also sell these fishes for some more Galleons, but keep in mind that they rot after 24 hours.

You'll have to get to the southern islands to be able to buy the other two ships. For example, you can buy a Caravel in the Sailor's Lodge area and Ketch in Ravenna . Though these ships cost quite a lot of Galleons. Moreover, you can't interact with the Shipwright NPCs on normal islands if you have a bounty.

In that case, you'll have to find Criminal Shipwrights located on specific islands. You can only buy Ketch from Whitesummit if you have a bounty since the entire island is dedicated to criminals . These Criminal Shipwrights will also help you open Sealed Chests if you have a bounty.

You won't be able to indulge in combat of Arcane Odyssey without a crew. This is because you have to steer the ship, control the sails, and use the cannons all at the same time . You'll easily be defeated if your ship stands still during the battle while you wait for your opponent to come in cannon range.

This issue is solved by the crew members, and you can get them at three different places. The first crew is located at Redwake itself, and you can buy them for some Galleons . The second and third group is located in Sailor's Lodge and Ravenna respectively. The crew you get in Ravenna is the best.

If you have multiple ships, you'll only be able to use a certain crew on one ship. You'll have to switch them over if you plan to use a different vessel and respawn it afterward . You can also hire multiple Quartermasters in the seas of the Arcane Odyssey.

Some Quartermasters will ask you to complete a series of quests while others require a certain amount of Fame or Bounty.

Once you buy a certain type of ship, you'll be able to put different parts on it using the ship-shaped option on the bottom left of your screen . Here's everything you can place on different ships:

You'll find Blueprints for most of these ship parts, and they can be created at any Builder NPC. The Blueprints can be found by opening Bronze Sealed Chests at Shipwright NPCs .

The most fun mechanic in Arcane Odyssey is the ship battles. You'll encounter a ton of NPC and player ships while sailing the Bronze Sea , and some of them will be hostile depending on your fame or bounty:

  • If you have a Neutral rating or have some Fame, the Pirate and Assassin ships will attack you if you get too close.
  • On the other hand, all ships except the Assassin vessels will attack you if you have a Bounty in your name. Moreover, the Grand Navy will send out ships to capture you if you have high Notoriety.

You can still attack the Grand Navy, Ravenna, and Merchant ships while sailing the seas if you have Fame, but they might not spawn any loot since you won't be able to attack the people on the ship unless you have a Bounty.

As mentioned above, you need to have a crew if you want to engage in sea battles. Once you've located a target you want to attack, go near them while ensuring that you stay out of their broadside . Get close enough and start shooting them with your cannons. To do this, click on the Arm Cannons button above your health bar.

This option will only appear if you have a crew on the ship, and you'll be able to select the cannon types when they're armed . After selecting the correct cannons, aim at either side of your ship and you'll see some white lines showing you where the cannons will go. Aim at the target ship and light them up.

There's a short delay between you pressing the shoot button and the cannons firing. Moreover, there is a cooldown for a few seconds between each round of cannon fire . This cooldown can be identified by the color of the aimed lines since they get grayed out when they're in cooldown.

Aim the cannon at the top part of the ship's Hull since you'll not hit them if you aim too low. You'll see a health bar at the top once you've damaged the enemy vessel at least once . When they reach zero health, the ship will be sunk but it will stay on the surface. The hardest part of the ship battle starts after this.

If you want to loot the treasure, you'll first have to defeat the crew members of the enemy ship . Your crew won't help you in this endeavor, and things can get tough if the enemies have a captain on board. This is why it's important to target smaller ships unless you're in the late game.

Sailing can be quite overwhelming at the start, but a few tips can make things a lot easier:

  • You'll find Lost Cargo and Castaways while sailing the seas. The former can repair your ship and give you useful items while you can take the latter to a shore to get some rewards.
  • You can change ship name and color if you get Paintbrush or Name cards while exploring the land of Arcane Odyssey.
  • If your ship takes any damage while you're sailing, you can either repair it with a Hammer or pay a Shipwright to do it . It's much cheaper if you do it at the NPC, but keep a Hammer in your inventory for dire times. The ship will stay damaged even if you respawn it or change servers.

30 Ways To Sink a Boat { ...and 29 to prevent it } | Boating Mag

www.boatingmag.com

Sounds like a Darwin’s Guide for powerboaters. If we don’t want them making wakes across our bows or running into us, don’t show it to them and there will be fewer of them to worry about next season. We had fun figuring out a leak a while back. We’d go out sailing and find water in the after bilge section, which is separate from the forward section because the icebox drain goes into it, and you don’t want melted ice water smells getting the whole bilge reeking. In any case, water there after sailing. No water there following periods moored or after rain. No leak in the prop shaft. Screwy. Where could it be coming from? Found out one evening, about an hour after the start of an overnight race, when our steering linkage parted. (It had gotten tightened earlier in the day and someone forgot to re-install the cotter pins...) Sticking my head down by the rudder quadrant to re-attach the cables as we reached along at about 8 knots, I realized that I was getting showered by water coming in by the rudderstock. The oakum in the packing gland had dried out and whenever a wave came up over the rudderstock, water squirted in like a fountain. Not knowing at that point exactly what the problem was, nor how much water was coming in, or if it might get worse, but realizing that it would be another 10-12 dark hours before finishing, we decided to retire. I repacked the gland the next morning and have had no problems since. Little things.

This one should go in the "best bilge pump" thread. 16. Check-Valve Backflow What Happened: Since the through-hull is mounted so low to the waterline, a clever mechanic put a one-way check valve on your bilge pump's exhaust hose to keep the sea out. Too bad it didn't. What You Should Have Done: Check valves are unreliable and can get stuck open. Route the pump's exhaust hose as high as possible to a through-hull near the rubrail. If it must go to a low outlet, run the hose up inside the boat as high as possible, install an anti-siphon valve at the top of the loop, and run it to a seacock that you can close.

I like your thinking @rgranger . You have a math background, with the keel at 6k Lbs 5ft below the waterline and the thru hull 14 in to starboard of centerline on my 16K displacement boat how many Sumo wrestlers will I need to suspend from lines to the 45 ft mast head to get the thru hull clear of the water. Then how much beer will be needed to keep them suspended and happy while I complete the work on the thru hull. It looks like a relatively easy math equation but I got lost trying to figure out the correct knot to tie so I can release the Sumos when under pressure and running out of beer. But thanks for the idea I am taking it under advisement. Hope you can help me resolve my concerns for the Sumo wrestlers.

They make a devise that comes in through your thru hull from the outside and seals the hole so you can change the seacock while in the water. looks like a diaphragm on a stick. Would that help?

Here's another few ways to sink a boat: Seeping water from bolts that hold the skeg in place. On the Atomic 4 I had there was a fitting on the starboard side of the motor that served no discernable function. There was a tube threaded into it. I took the tube off in a moment of unclearity to see what it did and oops. Water started running out ot the engine. I quickly tried to replace the tube but the threads weren't catching. Eventually I got maybe three threads in and the water stopped. That was fine until I got a call from a friend saying the dreaded words "Your boat is sinking." Get hit by lightning. Leaking bailers on my Bandit 15. That boat spent as much time on the bottom as floating. Holes do not belong in the bottom of boats or roofs. And, of course, forgetting to put the plug in the transom after launching.

Orcas sink sailing yacht in Strait of Gibraltar

An unknown number of orcas have sunk a sailing yacht after ramming it in Moroccan waters in the Strait of Gibraltar, Spain’s maritime rescue service said on Monday, a new attack in what has become a trend in the past four years.

The vessel Alboran Cognac, which measured 15 metres (49 feet) in length and carried two people, encountered the highly social apex predators, also known as killer whales, at 9 a.m. local time (0700 GMT) on Sunday, the service said.

The passengers reported feeling sudden blows to the hull and rudder before water started seeping into the ship. After alerting the rescue services, a nearby oil tanker took them onboard and transported them to Gibraltar.

The yacht was left adrift and eventually sank.

The incident is the latest example of  recurring orca rammings  around the Gibraltar Strait that separates Europe from Africa and off the Atlantic coast of Portugal and northwestern Spain.

Experts believe them to involve a subpopulation of about 15 individuals given the designation “Gladis.”

According to the research group GTOA, which tracks populations of the Iberian orca sub-species, there have been nearly 700 interactions since orca attacks on ships in the region were first reported in May 2020.

Researchers are unsure about the causes for the behaviour, with leading theories including it being a playful manifestation of the mammals’ curiosity, a social fad or the intentional targeting of what they perceive as competitors for their favourite prey, the local bluefin tuna.

Although known as killer whales, endangered orcas are part of the dolphin family. They can measure up to eight metres and weigh up to six tonnes as adults.

Fixing Our Stinky Sink

As any sailor knows, a clogged sink drain on a sailboat can put a damper on your maritime adventures. Whether it’s caused by food scraps, soap residue, or hair, a blocked sink can lead to inconvenience, a stinky sink and potential plumbing issues.

Assessing the Situation

Our galley sin k has gradually been draining slower and slower. And every once in a while a stinky smell emanates from the sink. We’ve had this problem before and the culprit last time was gunk that had collected at the check valve. We have a check valve on the sink to prevent water from getting pushed up the drain when on a starboard tack. But we plan to remove it when we haul the boat out and change the thru-hull.

Prior to pulling the whole thing apart we did try soaking the drain in vinegar and using boiling water. Nothing seemed to work. If you can stick around to the end of the video you’ll hear Rich’s gag reflex in action. I wasn’t on the boat when he cleaned the check valve and was shocked when I reviewed the video.

Preventative Measures

We’ve always been careful of what we put in the sink. To avoid future clogs, we’ll be even more mindful of what goes down our sink. We use a sink strainer to catch food scraps and hair, and always avoid pouring grease or oil down the drain.

A clogged sink drain on your sailboat doesn’t have to throw your plans off course. By following these simple steps and using basic tools, you can effectively clear most sink clogs and restore proper water flow in your galley. Regular maintenance and mindful usage can help keep your sailboat’s plumbing in tip-top shape, ensuring that you can focus on enjoying your maritime adventures without the worry of clogged drains. Happy sailing!

What You Need to Know about the Ravenna Mosaics in Italy

August 10, 2023

Dazzling rather than drab and steeped in salacious history, the mosaics in Ravenna are some of the best mosaics in the world. Here’s an inside guide to the former capital of the Western Roman Empire.

Table of Contents

Why Mosaics Matter in Ravenna

My friends and family like to tease me about how much I love the colour blue. Midnight blue, royal blue, turquoise blue and cornflower blue. All bring me pleasure, with links to the soaring sky or the roll of the ocean, the scent of freedom and the chance to travel the world.

So imagine, if you will, my joy on discovering the mosaics of Ravenna. Say thee farewell to dusty drab cobblers of stone; Ravenna’s mosaics bathe in bright, brilliant colours. They soar across ceilings and glitter down from walls. The workshops serve blue glass pizzas, yes pizzas, sourced especially from Venice, which you can hold within your hands and clip (or smash) into pieces to make a mosaic of your own.

It was, in short, a revelation. And perhaps it shouldn’t have been. Because Ravenna, while still largely unknown in my home island, was once one of the most important cities in the world. When the Roman Empire split into East and West, Istanbul became the capital of the east. And Ravenna, the capital of the west.

Disclosure: if you book or buy through any of the links on this page, I may earn a small commission at no extra cost to you. Also, while I have travelled to Ravenna many times, this last visit was as a guest of the local tourist board. However, as ever, as always, I kept the right to write what I like. What’s the point otherwise?!

Fun Facts About Ravenna

  • It was originally built on the sea but over time, sedimentation occurred and now it’s connected to the coast by a canal.
  • Ravenna is sinking, so you won’t find any original floors in the buildings unless they’ve been raised.
  • Ravenna is also the site of the Tomb of Dante, author of The Divine Comedy.

Some Serious UNESCO Credentials

As a result, it’s not surprising to learn that the city has 8 UNESCO World Heritage Sites, mainly built in the 5th and 6th centuries and adorned with, you guessed it, mosaics.

Mosaics are one of the main attractions but it’s easy to get overwhelmed. So let me share with you here my guide to seeing Ravenna’s mosaics in a sensible manner, including the highlights, those UNESCO World Heritage Sites and the more overlooked discoveries.

I’ll also walk you through the more modern side of mosaics and the artwork you can find at the MAR museum.

And finally? What it’s like to work in a real mosaic workshop and an interview with Luca Barberini.

And finally finally? Let’s have a quick chat about what else there is to do in the city of Ravenna and some of her nearby attractions.

Ready? Let’s go.

A Quick History of Ravenna

Ravenna’s mosaic heritage is steeped in history that dates back to the Roman Empire and beyond. The city’s rise to prominence began in the 5th and 6th centuries, when it served as the capital of the Western Roman Empire. During this golden era, Ravenna’s rulers and ecclesiastical figures commissioned magnificent mosaics that still shine brightly today.

What’s even more surprising is that all this took place in a relatively short time. Ravenna became the capital in 408 until the Western Roman Empire collapsed in 476. At that point, the Ostrogoths took over the kingdom before the Byzantine Empire reconquered the city in 540.

If you take a guided tour, you’ll hear a lot about this power struggle and how it shows up in the beautiful mosaics. But if names and dates turn you cold, you can just tune that out and appreciate the sight before you instead.

Here’s a recommended Ravenna mosaics guided tour from Get Your Guide. You can book online in advance and cancel up to 24 hours beforehand.

Must-Visit Mosaics in Ravenna

If you’re short on time, here are the big hitters:

  • Basilica di San Vitale: A true masterpiece of Byzantine art, this Basilica stuns with its intricate mosaics that adorn the walls, arches, and dome. It is a testament to the exceptional craftsmanship of the time.
  • Galla Placidia Mausoleum: Step into another world where the night sky mosaics and their skilful use of blue and gold tiles create an ethereal celestial panorama.
  • Basilica di Sant’Apollinare Nuovo: This basilica is a symphony of colour, showcasing a 6th-century mosaic frieze that spans the entire length of the nave. The depiction of saints, martyrs, and Biblical scenes unfurls in spectacular fashion, with leopard print leggings to look out for among the pageantry.
  • Baptistry of Neon: The Baptistry of Neon showcases an extraordinary mosaic of the Baptism of Christ, hidden within a rather plain building.
  • Archiepiscopal Chapel: Tucked within the Archiepiscopal Palace, this chapel houses mosaics that narrate the story of Joseph from the Book of Genesis.

Learn how to make mosaics in Ravenna

One of the best things to do in Ravenna involves trying to make a mosaic yourself!

We headed to the Koko Mosaico workshop on Via di Roma, where you can take a course in just that. Run by a small and dedicated team, this studio hosts international students on long placements as well as running workshops that last just a few hours so that visitors passing through the city can learn more about the process.

Colour charts and glass mosaic pizzas line the shelves and it’s surprisingly satisfying to take a chisel and chip off your own mosaic-ready chunk.

Luca Barberini: a modern mosaic artist

As it happens, we were lucky to catch Luca Barberini, a modern day mosaic artist, and chat to him about what guides his creative process.

We recognised his work from the main museum, the MAR, where we saw a mosaic of hundreds of faces in a crowd, a kind of Where’s Wally for mosaic art.

Barberini’s works pops with bright, sugary bubblegum colours, showing seaside days out from the nearby Adriatic coast.

However, on closer inspection, they’re really quite dark. Sunbathers are, quite literally, glued to their phones and sea monsters representing climate change threaten to pull boats of children down below the sea.

I’d highly recommend a visit to the workshop, even if you don’t have time to take a class. It’s so refreshing to see a different take on mosaics and to understand a little of the work that goes into them behind the scenes.

A word about modern mosaics and mosaic fatigue

After seeing all those mosaics, can you really handle seeing some more in a museum? Yes, yes you can!

The MAR Museum reinvents the idea of the mosaic through a series of thought provoking and eye poppingly bright works of art.

You’ll see famous paintings reproduced as mosaics, treasure chests decorated as mosaics and the whole idea of the mosaic reimagined through a collection of miniature books.

Just be careful where you sit down. Sometimes, what looks like a seat is actually a work of art. Oops…

Sinking Ravenna and the Basilica of San Francesco

Like Venice, the city of Ravenna in Italy is sinking.

These arches stand in the Basilica of San Francesco , looking through a 5th century sarcophagus to see a 10th century crypt where fish swim above the mosaics on the original floor. The further twist in this fascinating place? It was once the funeral site of Dante, he of Dante’s Inferno fame. However, his body became the subject of a political power struggle and it was moved several times over. His remains are now believed to be buried just outside.

How to see the Ravenna Mosaics

Now, you’ve got the gist of it, let’s move on to practicalities.

Map of the Ravenna Mosaics

How many UNESCO World Heritage Sites can you see in one day?

With only one day in Ravenna, it is possible to see all eight UNESCO World Heritage Sites but it is a bit of a squeeze. Five are centrally located and easy to walk between. The others need a little more planning.

Which are the eight UNESCO World Heritage Sites in Ravenna?

The sites are…

  • The Basilica of San Vitale, a stunning example of Byzantine architecture.*
  • The Mausoleum of Galla Placidia, a small but mighty masterpiece. The simple exterior belies the deep blue jewel-toned mosaics within.*
  • The Basilica of Sant’Apollinare Nuovo. A church with mosaics over nearly every inch of its walls.
  • The Archiepiscopal Museum. Ivory carvings, gold jewellery, and ancient manuscripts.
  • The Neonian Baptistery – the ceiling shows the baptism of Christ.*
  • Arian Baptistry – close to the Ravenna train station.
  • Mausoleum of Theodoric – just outside Ravenna.
  • Basilica of Sant’ Apollinare in Classe – 8 km from Ravenna

I’ve marked the ones that you can easily see in one afternoon with a *. They are all in the city centre – and in this instagram Ravenna mosaic video!

Let’s look at some of them in more depth.

Ravenna Mosaics in More Depth

Let’s talk about the big hitters…

sink the ravenna sailboat

Basilica di San Vitale

This is the big one. This magnificent basilica combines Byzantine and Roman architectural styles, creating a captivating structure that mixes east and west. The construction of the basilica began in 527 AD during the reign of Emperor Justinian I and was completed in 548 AD. Its octagonal shape and exquisite mosaics make it stand out among other religious buildings of the time.

The interior of the basilica is particularly impressive, showcasing the finest examples of Byzantine art. The mosaics depict various biblical scenes and figures such as Emperor Justinian and Empress Theodora, illustrating the close relationship between religion and politics during that era.

The grand dome and ornate columns add to the atmosphere of grandeur as you crane your neck up to see the Mystic Lamb on the ceiling.

These photos really don’t do it justice. It is astonishing.

Italy-Ravenna-Mausoleum-Galla-Placidia-Starry-Sky-with-books

Galla Placidia Mausoleum

Though she is small, she is mighty. The Galla Placidia Mausoleum may not look too spectacular from the outside but inside is the kind of artwork that will stop you in your tracks time and again.

It is named after Galla Placidia, a noblewoman and member of the imperial family of the Western Roman Empire , a woman who lived a very complicated life. The mausoleum features a simple exterior adorned with reliefs and mosaics, while its interior showcases intricate Byzantine mosaics that depict various scenes from early Christianity and a starry overhead sky.

Despite its age, the structure has been exceptionally preserved. Stepping into the Mausoleum feels like a journey back in time, as if the artists had just that second finished and headed off for lunch.

Who was Galla Placidia? Galla Placidia, a prominent figure in the late Roman Empire, led a remarkable life intertwined with political alliances and dynastic ties. Born in 388 AD, she was the daughter of Emperor Theodosius I and his second wife Galla, and sister to emperors Arcadius and Honorius. Her life took a significant turn when she married Ataulf, a Visigothic king, in 414 AD. This marriage aimed to solidify the relationship between the Roman and Visigothic realms, though Ataulf’s subsequent death led to Galla Placidia being captured by his successor, Sigeric. Following her eventual release, she returned to Rome, where her brother Honorius forced her into another strategic marriage, this time with the powerful general Constantius III.

The Basilica di Sant’Apollinare Nuovo

Also part of the Early Christian Monuments of Ravenna UNESCO World Heritage Sites, the Basilica of Sant’Apollinare Nuovo is a magnificent church.

No, really, even for those rather jaded after visiting too many churches in Europe, this one is a staggering work of beauty and it also holds the record of being the largest monument decorated with mosaics.

The basilica was built in the 6th century by the Ostrogothic King Theodoric, who wanted to show benevolence. As a result, mosaics depict the town hall in between the two rival religious temples.

Basilica di Sant'Apollinare Nuovo mosaics where curtains have covered over the people

Following the arrival of the Byzantines, the church was reconsecrated and the Pope suggested that the mosaics should be blackened as their shine was distracting those who worshipped within.

It seems the artists of the time found a compromise, covering the Goths with mosaic curtains, leaving only tell-tale scenes of hands peeping out from behind the columns.

Inside tip: look out for the 3 Wise Men attending the first nativity dressed in leopard leggings and miniskirts. Standard 5th century attire, apparently.

Italy - Ravenna - Baptistry of Neon ceiling view

The Baptistry of Neon

Again, while looking rather plain from the outside, the Baptistry of Neon is astonishingly beautiful within. As the name suggests, it’s primarily used for baptisms and features a mosaic which depicts the baptism of Jesus in the River Jordan by John the Baptist.

It’s octagonal, a feature of early Christian baptistries, with one side for each day of the week and one to symbolise the Day of the Resurrection and Eternal Life.

I really can’t stress this enough, don’t let this long list of Early Christian mosaics put you off. This structure is stunning.

Italy - Ravenna - Domus of the Stone Carpets - Shepherd Boy with black boots

Domus of the Stone Carpets

The Domus of the Stone Carpets also offers insights into the past, with older mosaics made in a distinctly different style. The meticulously crafted mosaic floors or “stone carpets” have earthy tones and a lot of white.

Look out for the resplendent peacock, as well as scenes showcasing elegantly poised deer and exotic flora. Then there’s the big mystery on the wall: spring, autumn and winter, but whatever happened to summer?
