Wood and high tech materials combine in the Tison 48 to create a state of the art offshore racer-cruiser with gleaming varnished mahogany topsides

Product Overview

The stunning Tison 48 design combines engineered timber construction with high-tech materials including strategic use of carbon. Designer Thomas Tison, a structural engineer with an America’s Cup and aerospace background, created a custom laminate for the boat that he tested at Airbus’s engineering facility.

The result is a hull shell that weighs only 1,000kg, yet will withstand similar forestay loads to a TP52. This allows for a very hefty keel bulb, with a 45% ballast ratio, while keeping overall displacement low. The hydraulic lifting keel has an unusually deep maximum draught of 3.20m, so the boat is less reliant than most on form stability.

It’s therefore a single rudder design with a wide flared transom that reduces wetted surface area in light airs but still provides additional stability when heeled at high angles. Custom systems include a retractable drive that eliminates drag when sailing.

Elida was created for a client seeking a yacht with longevity to replace the family’s existing Swan 48 and was launched by Jan Bruegge Bootsbau in Hamburg this summer. Sea trial photos show its unique style – a state of the art offshore racer-cruiser with gleaming varnished mahogany topsides.

The word “bespoke” gets tossed around a lot in the marine industry, but Thomas Tison ’s latest creation is truly deserving of that descriptor.

The French naval architect, who is currently working for the British America’s Cup team, has unveiled an elegant new vessel that was custom-built for a client seeking a cross between a high-speed racer and a classic wooden sailing yacht . The end result is a 49-footer that eschews the current trend of minimalist, carbon-fiber raceboats in favor of what Tison describes as “a timeless prestige.”

Christened Elida , the slick offshore cruiser sports curved and tensed lines, with a pronounced flare, an inverted sheer line and a rounded turn of the bilge. Tison’s eponymous firm developed a unique construction method for the hull in which Alaskan light wood was reinforced with woven carbon fiber. This results in an incredibly light yet stiff frame. In fact, Tison even carried out in-depth testing at an Airbus facility to check the material’s strength.

In addition, the hull shape was optimized with computational fluid dynamics to ensure it performs well in the light to medium wind conditions experienced in most regattas. The team also developed a new lifting keel system to reduce the draft from 10.5 feet down to roughly eight feet and installed innovative carbon rigging to provide competitive gains whilst racing. According to Tison, Elida can reach nearly 30 knots at full tilt. That speed was a requisite for the owner, who plans to race in the prestigious Fastnet Race and other regattas.

“The key to realizing the owner’s vision is having an in-depth understanding of his underlying needs,” Tison said in a statement. “Even though it’s a process that takes time, this deep exploration allows us to come up with unique solutions for creating unique boats.”

Another request from the owner was to create a comfortable living area onboard for his family. After penning several layouts, the team settled on an open-plan interior that sees the aft cabins flow onto the main living section and the chart table tucked behind the companionway. This allowed for a longer cockpit and freed up space for a garage. To top it off, Tison engineered a custom heating and ventilation system. The Frenchman even thought about acoustics and made sure that the yacht had a good level of sound insulation.

Elida was recently launched in Germany and is now on her way to one very happy owner.

Jag spanade ju in hans scow på Düsseldorfmässan för ett par år sedan. Han hade även en Class 40 på ritbordet.

Nu verkar det i stället bli en genlemannaracer till en tysk ägare.

Många saker som känns rätt här.

Målvikt är 7.8 ton på tom båt med 3.45 ton bulb. Kan säkert variera beroende på vad inredningen landar på.

Man verkar ha tänkt mycket på vikten med däck i kol, ingen innerliner, 40 hk Lombardini och lättast möjliga system för el, vatten och annat. Thomas skojar lite om hur man kan spara 500 kg på en IMOCA. Måste ju betyda att något inte var optimalt från början.

We have compared the hull construction methods on a like to like basis, for a 75sqm hull prior to arriving at this solution: Carbon sandwich (Nomex core): 470kg Carbon sandwich (foam core): 520kg Eglass sandwich (foam core): 590kg Spruce single skin with carbon stringers and mahogany veneer (2mm thick): 785kg Red Cedar Strip planking: 1.035kg

S.Y. ELIDA was created via discussion with her owner, an offshore racer with a taste for classic timber yachts. The vision of her owner was to create a true offshore racer cruiser, with all the recent advances in deck, rig and sail systems and construction methods found on the latest racing yachts but with a lightweight interior able to accommodate a family for short cruises and a timber hull construction and appearance. We have devised a new construction method which results in a remarkably light and stiff hull for a timber construction, of less than 1t. The hull shell is built from carefully selected spruce planks at +/-45 degrees and is supported by a network of closely spaced carbon continuous stringers. The material testing conducted at an Airbus facility, the density based material selection conducted by Jachwerft Koenigstein and the development of a specific lightweight epoxy based adhesive ensure the hull was built with the best possible available materials. Due to the nature of this project, which maries both advanced composite components and high quality timber construction, TTYD early on proposed to assemble the skills of two yards. Jan Bruegge Bootsbau (Jachtwerft Koenigstein), based in germany, for the hull construction and assembly, and a specialist composite yard for the construction of the carbon parts (structure and deck).

INTERIOR ARRANGEMENT/ RACE MODE In race mode, the forward cabin sole can be removed and the forward bed folded up and out, making this area ideal to store sails. Mattresses in the aft cabin can be removed and replaced by pipe cots, to provide sleeping capacity and the possibility to stack equipment/ sails when sailing. The chart table is placed remotely from the main action, the navigator can communicate with the cockpit via a dedicated portlight. The navigation seat slides from tack to tack to ensure the navigator weight is to windward at all times. The interior arrangement was planned for using a spinnaker chute, creating a clear path between the foredeck hatch, wide opening in the mast bulkhead all the way to the aft watertight bulkhead. The table flaps, when closed, have a well rounded top edge without sharp corners to facilitate sail movements. The wet locker storage is heated, and the heating can be directed to a hand warmer by the galley.

INTERIOR ARRANGEMENT/ CRUISE MODE The interior arrangement is an evolution of ELAN. It is unique in a sense that the navigation area is placed aft of the companionway, similarly to what offshore racing yachts do. This solution offers several benefits. Firstly it frees the space on starboard to create an “entrance unit’: This unit can be used for the electric panel, yachts papers, and above all a large, easy-to-access heated wet gear locker. Secondly, it frees the space for better movement around the companionway and to access the two aft cabins. With the now wider hull shape, two symmetrical aft cabins were placed under the cockpit. A center console contains the engine and diesel tanks. Above this center console is a fabric storage which divides the two cabins visually. The choice was made to open the aft cabins to the main living area. This makes for an improved impression of space, and better ventilation. In the saloon area, a table hides the lifting keel structure and accommodates between 6 and 8 people. The lower sofas on each tack are wide enough to be used as sleeping berths, the backrest can be lifted up to create additional sleeping capacity further up. Forward of the mast bulkhead is the heads compartment. Relatively large, it offers a shower floor area of 600 x 800mm. Space for a canting toilet was allowed for. Opposite the heads compartment is a storage area, made of removable boxes which can be filled or emptied at home and brought in the yacht ready for use. It compensates the relative lack of storage space under the cockpit and offers better and easier access to the items stored. In the forepeak, a master cabin with a “V” berth can be found. Overall this yacht can sleep up to 10 people and is ideally suited for cruises for 4-6 people.

Känns lite ologiskt att bygga en lätt båt i kolfiber och sedan limma på ett ton träplankor på sidan. Lika konstigt som att lägga ett teakdäck på en Club Swan…

Här känns det kanske tvärtom… jag vill bygga min drömbåt i trä – hur lätt kan jag få den?

Man väger som en Cookson 50, lite tyngre än en TP52 och är ett ton lättare än en CS50. Ganske ok för det här konceptet tycker jag…

Ytfaner på 2mm lär ju till viss del sätta livslängden: Hur många nedslipningar tål man? Men en kalasfin båt som jag tycker andas en lite uppskalad Wavetrain (Everitt):

Så går det när marknadens behov styrs av att sticka ut och göra ngt ingen annan ännu gjort. Välfungerande system måste per definition ersättas med ngt annat för att den sk utvecklingen ska fortsätta. I en era där positionering och förväntning ständigt värderas högre i en virtuell spiral, dyker dessa projekt upp. Och det är bra; att känna var gränserna går. Själv har jag länge närt drömmen om att spantbygga min egen båt i trä och laminera med kol och epoxy. Man behöver nåt att pyssla med. Att hålla igång ngr 11:or är kanske allt för enkelt?

Sketful, löjlig och dum. Fast säkert välbyggd och fantastisk att segla. Tycker beställaren är snål som inte lät bygga en riktigt fin klassisk båt i trä och en riktig lätt”sweet”-racer. Nu får hen ju varken eller.

Kauai Uhiwai has had an amazing and unique build history. The hull was made over a male mould in 1974 and meticulously constructed by Colin Nisbet until he passed away in 2016, when the build was completed for the boat's launch in 2017.

This boat has been built by someone with all the time in the world to make sure every detail is perfect. Many of the parts of this boat have been custom built by hand. The level of craftsmanship is exquisite and shows the mark of a true sailor. It is very rare to find a yacht of this calibre.

This is a classic yacht without the dramas of a timber hull. She is a cutter rigged sloop with fully battened, loose footed mainsail stowed neatly in a contemporary stack pack and lazy jacks, with 3 reefing options and additional track on the mast for a storm sail. Complimenting this are 2 roller furling headsails (Genoa and Staysail) for infinite adjustability and ease of use from the safety of the cockpit. Modern aluminium mast and sails made in 2017. Although modern, she carries the tradition of a beautiful laminated kauri bowsprit and gold leaf in-laid carving.

 This classic offers practicality in a modern cockpit layout with all the important lines leading back to the cockpit. A shallow stairway is nice and safe for moving around the boat when underway. Numerous berths including the saloon could sleep up to 9 people at a squeeze.

You have to see this boat to understand the stunning craftsmanship that has gone into putting this yacht together. Once you hear the stories of how everything has been custom built down to each bronze bolt you will appreciate the 30 odd years of construction.

This boat has been beautifully traditionally made, with some main features including:

This is not to say it doesn’t have modern features too- LED lighting, Hydraulic steering, 2017 Raymarine instrumentation, hot water and refrigeration mean this boat doesn’t skimp on modern comforts. The engine is in fantastic condition, with just 330 hours.

The Bluewater 41 design has amazing seakeeping ability, and a huge amount of power for light wind sailing. Arguably it would be one of the most comfortable boats sailing upwind in a sea way. The construction is extremely solid. 

The boat was built in Whangarei, with 13-14 models built over the last 40 years. There is a Facebook page dedicated to documenting the history of this class of boat.

Superyacht Agency Burgess Takes 16K SF at 540 Madison Avenue

Superyacht agency Burgess has a new address on “terra firma” in Midtown.

The 49-year-old global yacht chartering company announced Thursday it took 16,000 square feet on the 19th floor of DivcoWest ’s 540 Madison Avenue . Burgess will relocate from its current spot about seven blocks north at 111 East 61st Street . It’s unclear if its new digs are bigger.

A spokesperson for Burgess declined to share the length of the lease or asking rent, but average asking rent for office space on Madison and Fifth avenues in Midtown was $102.12 per square foot in the first quarter of 2024, according to a Cushman & Wakefield report .

Matt Emerson , senior partner at Burgess, brokered the deal for the firm and said in a statement that 540 Madison “epitomizes the sophistication and prestige” of the Plaza District. 

The fancy location was important to Burgess since its brokers often meet with their yachting world clients at the office, Emerson added.

Aside from its New York space, the London-based Burgess also has outposts in Miami and Beverly Hills, Calif., and 16 offices in total around the world, according to the company.

It’s unclear who brokered the deal for DivcoWest. A spokesperson for the landlord did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

The 39-story office building between East 54th and East 55th streets has recently signed up a few new retail tenants on the street level, including Danish electronics maker Bang & Olufsen and Brazilian jeweler H. Stern , as Commercial Observer previously reported.
