First-ever Shuck Hatteras Music Festival is shaping up to be one of the biggest events of the off-season

The first-ever Shuck Hatteras Music Festival is just hours away, and the inaugural event has already garnered tons of interest and support from the island community.

Held at the Cape Hatteras/Outer Banks KOA Resort in Rodanthe, the sprawling site will feature free parking at an adjacent soundside lot, a ticket booth, a Merry Muse Market, a stage for multiple bands, and different locales where all the oyster-themed action will take place.

The festivities kick off on Friday, December 16, at the Cape Hatteras/Outer Banks KOA Resort with live music by local band The Yacht Dogs, and local delicacies by Cousin’s Oysters, from 5:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m.

The activity heats up on Saturday, December 17, starting at 1:00 p.m. with a Merry Muse Market featuring more than 25 local art vendors, which will be open all day long.

Participants include Cafe Pamlico, Good Winds, Burger Burger, Waves Market & Deli, Lisa’s Pizzeria, Beach Pharmacy, Village Air, “Ya’ll Eat Yet?” food truck, and several local and independent chefs.

Tasting tickets for the Oyster Cook-Off Challenge will be available at the official Shuck Hatteras Booth on the premises, and there are three categories of awards, which will ultimately be decided by the tasters themselves: Best Tasting Oyster, People’s Choice Award (for booth set-up/presentation), and Most Creative Oyster.

At 4:00 p.m., the all-you-can-eat Oyster Roast begins, and while the overall festival is free and open to the public all day long, tickets can be purchased in advance for the Oyster Roast on site, or at the following locations:

• Beach Pharmacy in Avon & Hatteras
• Waves Coffee in Rodanthe
• Café Pamlico
• KOA Campground in Rodanthe

Bands performing throughout the afternoon and evening include Dr. Bacon, Hot Sauce 252, Crypterror Lives, Anchor Blazer, Howell & Caswell, Brian Surratt Music, After School Surf Club, and The Carolina Sweaters.

The Chicamacomico Lifesaving Station will also be on-site serving BBQ, with all proceeds benefitting the local Rodanthe landmark, and the event will feature a wealth of other activities, such as free henna tattoos from HennaVibe Tattoo, a 50/50 raffle, horseshoe tournament, kids’ games, and much more.

With so many activities scheduled throughout the afternoon, (and lots of excitement along the way), the first-ever Shuck Hatteras Music Festival is shaping up to be one of the biggest events of the off-season, and per organizers, will easily be a new festival that returns year after year.

On Friday, we will kick off the festivities on the pool deck with live music by renowned local band The Yacht Dogs and food delicacies by Cousin's Oysters. The shellabration will continue on Saturday, starting at 1pm with a Merry Muse Market featuring local art vendors, which is free and open to the public all day. The Oyster Cook-Off Challenge will run from 1:30-3:30, then the all-you-can-eat Oyster Roast will commence at 4pm!

The day will be full of fun and community, a 50/50 raffle, horseshoe tournament, kids games, and live music from Dr. Bacon, After School Surf Club, Howell & Caswell, The Carolina Sweaters, Anchor Blazer, Hot Sauce, Cryp-Terror, and MORE!

About Yacht Z

Yacht Z is an all-star band of SEAsoned Austin, TX musicians who, between them, have played in more bands than there are fish in the ocean. * Discovering that they all had a mutual love for the smooth, melodic, and sometimes funky genre commonly known as “Yacht Rock,” they decided to band together like a musical Voltron to become a powerhouse yacht rock machine.

As with most genres, exactly what is “Yacht Rock” can be a contentious subject, which ironically feels decidedly not Yacht Rock. How can you feel contentious listening to the smooth grooves? But we digress. The term was coined in 2005 by the makers of an online comedy video series called “Yacht Rock” which features actors portraying musicians like Michael McDonald, Kenny Loggins, Jimmy Messina, Steve Porcaro, and Daryl Hall & John Oates. It generally refers to music from around 1975-1984 which was usually referred to as “Adult-Oriented Rock” or “AOR,” as well as “Soft Rock” and “West Coast Sound.”

The creators of the term have a pretty strict definition of the term and have been critical of the overly expansive definitions that have broadened over time which they refer to as “Nyacht Rock.” The originators set forth these guidelines:

• High production value
• Use of “elite” Los Angeles-based studio musicians and producers associated with yacht rock
• Jazz and R&B influences
• Use of electric piano
• Complex and wry lyrics
• Lyrics about heartbroken, foolish men, particularly involving the word “fool”
• An upbeat rhythm called the “Doobie Bounce”

In 2014, AllMusic’s Matt Collier identified the “key defining rules of the genre” as follows:

• “Keep it smooth, even when it grooves, with more emphasis on the melody than on the beat”
• “Keep the emotions light, even when the sentiment turns sad (as is so often the case in the world of the sensitive yacht-rocksman)”
• “Always keep it catchy, no matter how modest or deeply buried in the tracklist the tune happens to be.”

Yacht Z does tend to lean toward a more lenient definition, as it allows us to bring more great music possibilities on deck. Some of the crew are fans of Yacht Rock Radio on SiriusXM radio, and use that as a source as well. In the end, we use our nautical, musical hearts. Does it “feel” appropriate to us? Does it fit in? Does it groove, but oh so smoothly?

As a bunch of music nerds, we love and invite discussions, suggestions, and opinions, but just as with the music, always keep it smooth, and the emotions light.

All five musicians:  Kevin Bachelder  - Vocalist / Trumpet , Allison Piccioni - Vocalist / Keys / Sax , Dieter Weinzettl -  Drums,  Henry Soliz - Bass  and Frank Browne - Guitar / MD .  have opened for and or performed with numerous  National touring acts over the last several Years as well as laying down licks as top notch musicians on various albums and other music era acts throughout their careers. The Yacht Rock style of music which has been coined Yacht Rock has only been in the last 10 years but it’s an endearing term to describe what is a basically a hybrid of Jazz , Rock, Pop and Soul. Baby Boomers used to call it EZ Listening or Kick Back Music.  It was an easy choice for the band to want to join similar creative forces since having had experience in the genres from those ongoing musical endeavors.

The Yacht Groove became a reality a few Years ago as a high end Corporate Party Music Agency band booked primarily at: Country Clubs, Special Events and Birthday Parties but in the last couple years they have been doing City parks, Casinos, and Festivals as well. . This tightly knit fun pop rock act THE YACHT GROOVE will not disappoint. The show performance format is usually a 90 minute concert or done as two shows with a short  intermission .  

Performing a concert style compilation of all the recognizable 70’s & 80s radio rock hits you hate to admit you love. This party band cranks out all those party hits of yesterday in a fun filled show format while dressed in laid back Nautical attire and throwing in some smooth yachty era banter. So come on out and join the fun . Jump on board, enjoy the ride and be the Captain of your own Yacht Rock musical experience.  Here’s to good friends. No socks required,  sun screen optional.
