Unmistakably Oyster

The latest collaboration between humphreys yacht design and our in-house design studio, the new 495 50 foot sailing yacht is an evolution of five decades of iconic oyster design cues..

Her clean hull lines and wide beam aft are the foundation for the outstanding space and capabilities of the Oyster 495. She incorporates many of our big yacht features in a compact 50 foot yacht. Instantly recognisable as an Oyster, the Oyster 495 features our pioneering deck saloon, protected cockpit and helm stations, wraparound and forward-opening saloon windows. Flush decks, signature triple vertical seascape windows, foredeck skyscape windows, a powerful plumb bow and extended bowsprit complete the look.

We were the first boat builder to create a truly ergonomically designed cockpit and helm positions, with sprayhood and optional bimini for additional protection. Details like the cockpit table, with optional built-in refrigerated drinks locker, that comfortably seats up to eight people, is just one of the many triumphs of Oyster design thinking.

The Oyster 495 consistently delivers powerful, responsive and rewarding performance in safety and comfort.

Nine knots is her happy place and her well-balanced, stable wide-beamed hull form gives you confidence to keep the sails up in almost any conditions. Twin rudders make her light and agile on the helm, offering fingertip control even in the most boisterous seas. Her low centre of gravity keel offers substantial displacement for enhanced stability and handling, and she moves easily in cruising trim. Carrying significant sail power, you are guaranteed consistently fast cruising speeds and the optional sprayhood and bimini provide excellent protection from the sun, whilst improving all-round comfort.

This 50 foot sailboat for sale offers the range of innovative automated sailing technology. This includes in-mast furling with push-button controls and B&G instruments, all operated from the helm positions, making her the perfect choice for couples or young families.

The Oyster 495 features lots of space to relax and share good times with friends and family.

Her wide beam offers unexpected returns in space, both above and below decks – something you will not find on any other 50 foot sailboat for sale. The beautifully styled centre cockpit is perfect for entertaining up to eight people for alfresco dining. The aft pushpit seats are a great place to see all the action under sail. The wide teak deck at the stern and flush foredeck offer generous entertaining and sunbathing spaces.

The transom houses an innovative, push-button operated, cassette boarding/bathing platform. A choice of subtle mood lighting and integrated audio speakers let you set the tone for entertaining guests under the stars.

New generation interiors feature modern styling, integrated technology and equipment for truly luxurious entertaining and living spaces.

“I can say with complete confidence that the Stratos Dutch Built 50 is the most seaworthy vessel in its class,” Bas Lengers, the founder of the Dutch yard, said in a statement.

Dutch Built 50

Lengers penned the DB50 in partnership with Dutch designer Bernd Weel, while Dutch firm Sea Level took care of the engineering. The yacht features an extra-dense composite hull and a lightweight carbon superstructure that gives it a low center of gravity for increased stability on the seas. The bow is carefully designed to break away spray water, too. As such, the 50-footer comfortably handles waves above 13 feet and gale-force wind. It also has an impressive top speed of 36 knots and a range of up to 450 nautical miles.

This floating SUV is by no means short on luxury, though. The yard says the interior is “supercar GT quality.” The cruiser even has a carbon hardtop and an automated sunroof like your favorite Ferrari. (The glitzy feature reportedly took a year of research and engineering to complete.) Up top, the sports ergonomic pilot seats with shock absorption and an “indestructible” wet bar. Below deck, the light and airy living quarters are equipped with spacious cabins for up to four guests.

Dutch Built 50

To top it off, the craft can be tailored to each owner’s tastes and proclivities. There are 25 different hues for the exterior and three colorways for the interior. The exterior cushions and teak decking can also be customized. You can even opt to add a hydraulic swim platform if you so desire.

Sounds like the only hard part will be settling on a colorway.

Nice shot of Abracadabra (Chewy). Thanks for finding this, those were the days.

This really was such an opportunity for a kid from Detroit. I raced and worked on many of the boats and ran Leading Edge for a few years. The team mentality of the boat captains and the mentorship is something I try to duplicate at Oakcliff Sailing.

ClubSwan 50 on test: the most extreme production yacht we’ve ever seen

  • Toby Hodges
  • October 14, 2016

The result of a design competition won by Juan K, the ClubSwan 50 is outrageously good to sail, says Toby Hodges. All pics by Rick Tomlinson.

50 foot racing yacht

Nautor’s Swan well and truly removed the shackles for this contemporary beast. It has unleashed a design so fresh she deserves an MTV documentary about her.

The only thing that looks Swan-like is the coveline with its familiar blue arrow head.

Nautor’s Swan has often been ahead of the curve – the Finnish/Italian company has been building lightweight carbon flyers for over a decade now – and for its 50th anniversary it wanted to produce a spectacular yacht. I think I can say it has achieved that rather handsomely.

Marketing director Vanni Galgani said the company didn’t really care how many sold so long as the 50 had wow factor. It has, but Italian romanticism is not the point. This is the result of a diligently researched, multi-faceted programme from its first concept.

She’s a fabulously fancy weekender, perhaps, but moreover will be a fast and fun owner-driver one-design class, with an ambitious and exciting Nations Cup programme (see the panel at the end) – and one that could only potentially succeed under a name well practised in organising international regattas.

A beast secured: note the twisted contours of her flared topsides, the tidy twin backstay system and the main sheeted well aft.

A beast secured: note the twisted contours of her flared topsides, the tidy twin backstay system and the main sheeted well aft.

So, why is she so cool? Just look at the design features. She’s aggressive and flared, with muscular, powerful lines that possess a raw sex appeal. Juan Kouyoumdjian seems to have pushed all contemporary features to the extreme: the pronounced, curved reverse sheer and stem together with the menacing bowsprit forward that creates a swordfish look; the forward sprayrail and hard chine aft; the prominent flare to the quarters and the angular companionway.

The mast is positioned well aft, deck-stepped and raked back like a multihull. This creates a massive J area for flying powerful A-sails, combined with a potent square-top mainsail. It’s monohull meets multihull, raceboat meets luxury performance. If there were a Top Trumps game for monohull design this would be the card to hold.

More design details

  • The bowsprit (just 10kg), which protrudes as menacingly as a jouster’s lance, can be painted white
  • Reverse sheer helps soften the lines of a wide transom yacht. Because Juan K designed the boat to heel, “if you don’t bring the sheer down it looks very high and can look bow down”
  • Despite the scrupulous attention to weight, teak decks are standard – she’s still a Swan after all
  • There is a huge cockpit locker below the aft deck. As with all Swans, this has a watertight bulkhead forward, so if a rudder is lost, there is no danger of sinking

the wide toerail is chamfered, affording hiking crew a comfortable perch, and the cambered foredeck increases headroom in the forward cabin – a feature that adds to her monocoque-like stiff shape.

the wide toerail is chamfered, affording hiking crew a comfortable perch, and the cambered foredeck increases headroom in the forward cabin – a feature that adds to her monocoque-like stiff shape.

Competitive edge

This is the first Swan not designed by German Frers in four decades. Nautor held a design competition with a brief for a contemporary, fast, competitive one-design that could sail offshore and be converted to a sports cruiser sailed with limited crew. A small ask, then! More importantly, it said: ‘In one word, this yacht has to be cool.’

In Juan K it found a designer with similar Argentinian flare to Frers, but with a more innovative, cutting-edge racing focus. He is known for his very shallow, wide-stern designs and his repeated VO70 successes – ABN Amro , Ericsson 4 , Groupama 4 – and more recently the silver bullet Rambler 88 .

“I looked a lot at what Frers had done with Swan to try to keep the Swan DNA,” Juan K explains. “For me it was essential to keep it as a racing boat that could cruise, not the other way around. Weight was essential.”

The 50 is seriously light at 8.5 tonnes. A good indication of her slippery profile was immediately apparent as we planed away from Nautor’s marina in Pietarsaari – under engine. The whole structure is built in carbon epoxy Sprint laminate. Even her keel fin is carbon – only top racing yachts such as VO65s have that. The modern interior is a lesson in disguise: all-carbon dressed in wafer-thin leather and teak veneer.

Glance through the specs (off-the-scale for a production yacht) and you can imagine Juan K giggling like a mad professor as he came up with the design. The outrageous sail area:displacement of 36.5 is by far the highest ratio I’ve seen for a series-built yacht. The 50 also has a feather-light displacement:length ratio of just 86 – and over 40 per cent of that displacement is in the keel’s torpedo bulb. She can set nearly 3,000sq ft of asymmetric sail.

It’s like lifting the bonnet of a muscle car to find someone has packed in far more cylinders than seemed possible.

The catch to all this lightweight bling? She costs nearly a million euros. That’s twice the price of our favourite pin-up from last year, the Solaris 50 (another trendsetter drawn by an Argentinian, Soto Acebal). To merit that sort of asking price, the ClubSwan 50 would have to excel in build and finish quality and be as seriously exciting on the water as first impressions suggest.

Setting the enormous asymmetric.

Setting the enormous asymmetric.

The deal with heel

So, what’s she like to sail? Although our test was only the third time the black 3Di sails had been hoisted on this very first 50, it did not take long to answer: utterly addictive.

We had relatively light winds; largely between 5 and 10 knots. But this is a vessel that needs little encouragement to create her own wind, especially once some heel is induced. Her optimum heel angles are high (20-25º upwind and 15-22º reaching) to gain maximum waterline length and righting moment for minimum wetted surface.

Seeing a hull in build from below makes it easier to appreciate how the 50 is designed to sail at a high degree of heel. She has very sharp bow sections, together with a long yet minimal wetted surface that extends to the chined quarters when heeled.

For the first half an hour or so I sailed her like that upwind as if in a trance. In just 5 knots of true wind, we were making 7-7.5 knots, sliding along with barely a wake. I was astonished. Five knots true! An owner would scarcely ever need to fire up the engine!

Enjoyment escalates with the addition of the vast kite. We were quickly matching the 7- to 10-knot true wind speeds, the base of the white, red and blue kite kissing the water as we pointed up to around 60° apparent.

At this angle the bottom leading edge of the windward rudder is exposed, baring the sawtooth profile that Juan K compares to the tubercles of a whale. The rudders are a development of those designed for Rambler 88: “As the boat is always sailed heeled, the tip of the windward rudder is touching the water, so you have to design the rudders to be sailed like this – in and out of the water.” The tubercle effect also helps prevent stalling, giving an extra 2-3° angle of attack.

The sawtooth shape to the leading edge of the rudders – like a whale tubercle, Juan K says – is to limit drag when dipping in and out of the water and to prevent the blades from stalling quickly.

The sawtooth shape to the leading edge of the rudders – like a whale tubercle, Juan K says – is to limit drag when dipping in and out of the water and to prevent the blades from stalling quickly.

Though the 50 uses raceboat design, technology and build processes, she remains a manageable yacht to sail. She showed no signs of twitchy behaviour. I could feel plenty of grip on the working blade even when we heated her up. These blades are deep enough to offer owner-drivers assured grip, but a combination of their outboard placement and high aspect shape means they still feel supremely light on the wheel.

Heading back upwind when the breeze increased to 10-13 knots, the 50 really started to come to life. We clocked 8.5 knots at 31-35° to the apparent wind. She really loves to heel and our test was a mere glimpse of the animal she promises to be in a breeze. A smoking offwind ride in heavy airs with the crew hiking out of the quarters would, I’m quite sure, provide as good a high as anything legal.

The ClubSwan 50 is designed to be (relatively) easily managed too. Taming that powerful sailplan would be the obvious concern for most owners considering any short-handed daysails or cruises. Below 10 knots of breeze the running backstays can remain at the mast base. Above that, two reefs are employed to allow the boom to pass the backstays.

The backstays are locked off and the jib sheets led to aft winches. The generous J area means a staysail can be set as well as or instead of the furling genoa. Tank allocation for water and fuel is enough for short cruises and the engine size is generous – we planed along at 9.5 knots at 2,500rpm.

Top race boats from 30 to 50 feet

Published on October 9th, 2019 by Editor -->

In the Irish publication Afloat , Olympian and Sailing Coach Mark Mansfield runs through the options available for an owner looking to buy a new boat for racing in the 30 to 50-foot range and picks his top 15 from the market:

Having sailed in numerous regattas over the last few years, there are clear designs that feature well on the IRC rating system used in Ireland, the UK, France and many other European countries. Some of the 15 that I have selected below are more offshore orientated, some are true cruiser-racers, with nice interiors, and only one is a full-on racing boat.

There are, of course, numerous other designs that are no longer in production, or one-off boats. However, these 15 are yachts that could be purchased now, and in most cases be sailing and racing in Irish waters by the middle of the summer next year.

I have selected the 30 to 50-foot range as that is where the majority of new boats purchased now come from. So here goes, in size order, largest first. The pricing mentioned are the basic prices without Instruments, sails or safety gear.

The New Flagship

50 foot racing yacht

The First by Jeppesen & Pons

Introducing the Arcona 50, the first model designed by Jeppesen & Pons, and the new flagship of the Arcona fleet. This captivating 50ft performance cruiser marks a step change for Arcona Yachts with a new design collaboration and many new design features.

With over 6000 yachts on the water and a ¾ ton cup winning race pedigree, Principal Designer, Niels Jeppesen, and Yacht Designer & Naval Architect, Ariadna Pons, bring a wealth of experience to Arcona Yachts.

The brief for Jeppesen & Pons’ first Arcona was to design a 50-foot performance cruiser that can be easily handled by two people, while simultaneously delivering in terms of cruising comfort and sailing performance, in true Arcona style. Created to go further, this yacht forges ahead in all design aspects, setting a new standard to meet the high demands of our customers, whether it’s their ambition to go cruising the Stockholm Archipelago or to cross an ocean.

GO FURTHER WITH THE ARCONA 50

The Arcona 50 is ideal for safe and comfortable long distance performance cruising. In a first for Arcona, this new flagship has twin rudders providing more control in the water. Another first for Arcona is the addition of a dinghy garage. Watertight composite bulkheads separate the accommodation from both the bow sail locker and the dinghy garage.

Also new to Arcona are the L-shaped cockpit benches and the two cockpit tables, which improve functionality and enable guests and crew to move around the cockpit more easily under sail. Liferaft locker recessed into the cockpit floor, halyard and sheet lockers under the side decks in front of the helmsman. Aft coaming lockers to hide the yacht’s gas bottles and shorepower socket.

The Arcona 50 has twin wheels as standard, and the cockpit layout and the sail handling systems are set up for shorthanded sailing and ease of use.

She has a three-spreader mast with discontinuous rod rigging plus double hydraulic backstay cylinders with a central pumpstation. A carbon mast and furling carbon boom is available as an upgrade. There is an optional inner forestay to attach a furling heavy weather jib for ocean passages. There is also the option for a bowsprit for easily controllable use of asymmetric sails.

The central single mainsheet block is recessed below the cockpit floor. The yacht is available with an electrically operated mainsheet traveller track, also recessed below the cockpit floor, as an upgrade.

Next to the winches, there are dedicated lockers for halyards and sheets enabling the cockpit to be ‘clean’.

Under power, an standard 80hp or optional 100Hp common rail engine propels a folding propeller, keeping vibrations and noise to a minimum. Optional retractable thrusters will secure maximum manoeuvrability in narrow marinas.

SCANDINAVIAN ELEGANCE BELOW DECK

Below deck minimalist Scandinavian elegance permeates every detail. The interior is made in Khaya Mahogany and can be upgraded to Scandinavian Light Oak. As seen in superyachts, but new to Arcona, the woodwork is cored to maximise weight-saving without compromising on the aesthetics.

The galley has lots of practical stowage, a gimballed cooker with oven and a generously-sized sink and fridge. The galley layout enables easy access to the L-shaped saloon seating. There is the option to choose an alternative layout with U-shaped seating and an additional worktop space.

The saloon table has an additional seat to starboard that can be moved and locked into position.

The owners’ cabin features a Kingsize bed, lots of storage and an en-suite with a separate shower. For guests, there is an additional heads with a separate shower area. The two aft cabins have double berths as standard and can be upgraded to a convertible twin berth configuration.

Lots of natural light flows from the large hull windows and flush hatches which creates the feeling of more space. Arcona offers a broad range of cushion fabrics and colour options for you to choose from to personalise your Arcona.

SWEDISH BUILD QUALITY

Like all boats in the Arcona fleet, the Arcona 50 reflects the quality expected from Swedish boatbuilders, using the best materials, techniques and trusted handpicked suppliers. Hull, deck and internal structure will be made of vacuum infused Divinycell cored GRP with strategic important areas reinforced with carbon. This carbon reinforcements are useful for both strength and weight-saving. As with all Arcona yachts, the Arcona 50 also features a galvanised steel keel frame.

Blending Scandinavian yacht design expertise with Swedish boatbuilding craftsmanship is an exciting combination for this new Arcona flagship.

The Kraken Standard

50 foot racing yacht

When it comes to equipment specification we’re raising the standard here too. All Kraken’s come loaded with the equipment we know you’ll want and need.

All other boat builder’s ‘standard’ will require the owner to add another 20-40% to the cost of the boat to bring it up to a reasonable specification for the task of world cruising.

At Kraken, our standard means you’ve already got everything and you don’t need to spend another Dollar, Euro or Pound to sail off the delivery dock to anywhere in the world.

Here's just some of the equipment you get, you’d never expect as standard

Build Specification

10 features included with every kraken, one piece hull and integral zero keel.

All Kraken’s comprise of a one piece hull and integral Zero Keel which houses a sealed lead ballast bulb.

The hull lay up is built using 17-22 layers of composite engineered fabrics bonded together by vinyl-ester resins. The general hull thickness is a minimum of 15mm. Aramid fibre composites (Kevlar) is also used in all impact areas, the bow stem, the front of the keel and the keel base.

The hull topsides incorporate 25mm closed cell foam, the FRP foam sandwich which extends from 40cm (16″) above the waterline to deck level. This structure improves insulation and overall hull form rigidity. A Kraken’s hull and structures exhibited no flexing.

ALPHA™ Rudder System

The rudder and steering system is the most vulnerable element of any yacht, in recognition of this, the Kraken engineering and design team have developed the world’s safest rudder and steering system.

The rudder is fully protected and supported by a full length skeg with an integral stainless steel beam, which has at its foot the first rudder bearing. The 3 ¾” (82mm) rudder stock has a second (main) bearing at its centre as it passes into the hull at the transom. This bearing is accessible and removable from the inside of transom. Even at sea!

The rudder stock has a removable third bearing at the top inside the stern lazarette. The rudder itself, comprises an integral stainless steel armature, which is welded to the stainless steel rudder stock. It is then finished and faired using FRP/vinyl-ester.

Solid crash zone at bow waterline

A heavily reinforced ‘solid crash zone’ below the anchor chain locker, incorporating high density closed cell foam with substantial reinforcements in aramid fibres extends from above the waterline to 40cm below it. This solid area runs through to the first sealed bulkhead providing maximum collision protection.

Structural frames and stringers

All longitudinal and latitudinal structures are individually bonded in during the hull layup stages with no prefabricated structural components . The video below explains how the structural frames and stringers work on a Kraken Yacht.

All bulkheads are vacuum infused FRP with 25mm structural foam core. No plywood is used. There are two watertight sealed bulkheads forward, one between the anchor locker and the forward lazarette and a second one between the forward lazarette and the interior. A further watertight, sealed bulkhead at the stern divides the interior from the aft lazarette.

The structural bulkheads are fully bonded into the hull stringers & frames.

Deck Structure

The deck is vacuum infused FRP using composite fibres and vinyl-ester resin with a structural foam core. This provides high levels of rigidity and insulation.

The deck structure is single-skin FRP around the base of all deck fittings.

The outside finish of the deck is panelled non-slip gelcoat with Flexiteek side decks and cockpit sole as standard.

Integral Kraken moulded safety bulwark

All Kraken have an Integral moulded safety bulwark with concave internal surface for superior deck safety at sea.

Saloon/coach roof windows

Ultra-high impact-resistant laminated glass is used in the wrap-around saloon windows and port lights so that accidental damage will not result in water ingress to the interior.

Hull Finishes

Standard hull gelcoat colour is Signal White. Many colour options available at owners choice.

Double line boot top in Alwgrip to owners colour choice.

3 x coats of primer and sealer applied below the waterline before standard antifoul in dark grey, other colour choices available.

Build standard and certification

All Kraken’s are designed and built to exceed ISO CE RCD Category ‘A’

Size and design of the sailboat

The best sailboats in this category offer a well-balanced blend of performance, storage, and living space. As many of these boats are designed for long-distance cruising, having ample storage for provisions, equipment, and personal items is essential. While smaller sailboats might be more affordable and easier to handle, you'll need to strike a balance between size and the level of comfort you desire on extended voyages.

Durability of a bluewater sailboat

These boat's hulls are typically constructed with sturdy, long-lasting materials like fiberglass, steel, or even aluminum. Additionally, the rigging and deck hardware should be robust, capable of withstanding harsh weather conditions and continuous use. As you evaluate potential bluewater sailboats, pay attention to the quality of the craftsmanship and materials used throughout the boat, as this will largely determine its ability to handle the rigors of ocean sailing.

Seaworthiness of the sailboat

This characteristic refers to a boat's ability to handle rough seas, high winds, and other challenging conditions that you might encounter on your journeys. A seaworthy sailboat should exhibit:

  • A stable, well-designed hull that can efficiently cut through waves
  • A deep, secure cockpit to protect the crew from the elements
  • High-quality, easily accessible safety equipment
  • Solid, watertight hatches and portlights

When evaluating a sailboat's seaworthiness, it's important to consider its design, construction, and previous ocean-crossing performance, if available.

Comfort and livability of the boat

As you'll likely be spending extended periods at sea, it's essential to have a comfortable living space to make your journey more enjoyable. Key factors in comfort and livability include:

  • A roomy, well-ventilated cabin with ample headroom
  • Adequate sleeping arrangements for the crew
  • A functional galley for meal preparation
  • Efficient systems for heating, ventilation, and lighting
To learn more about bluewater sailing , here's our comprehensive article on it.

Let's discuss a few key factors you should look for to find the perfect bluewater sailboat for your needs.

Size matters : As we're focusing on sailboats under 50 feet, it's important to think about how the size of the boat will impact your cruising experience. Smaller sailboats tend to be easier to manage and maintain, while larger ones typically offer more space and comfort. Take into account your sailing skills and the size of your crew when making a decision.

Design and construction : A well-built sailboat plays a vital role in your safety and success when sailing in blue waters. Look for proven bluewater sailboat designs, like those found on Waterborne Magazine's list or Yachting World's selection. A solid construction and well-maintained hull will ensure your boat can withstand the rigors of offshore sailing.

Budget and maintenance costs : It's crucial to consider not only the initial purchase price but also the ongoing maintenance costs when choosing your bluewater sailboat. Established designs often have a good track record for reliability, which can help keep costs down in the long run. Some sailboats under $100,000 can still provide excellent bluewater cruising experiences.

Sailing purpose and destination : Your choice of sailboat will also depend on the type of sailing you plan to do and the destinations you wish to visit. Are you looking for a boat to tackle lengthy ocean passages or a vessel for coastal cruising? Each type might require different features and focuses, so plan accordingly.

Creature comforts and functionality : Finally, think about the amenities you want on your bluewater sailboat—you'll be spending quite some time onboard. A functional galley, comfortable sleeping arrangements, and a functional navigation station are just a few of the features that can make your sailing experience more enjoyable.
