THE BUIZEN 48'

Luxury cruiser.

The Buizen 48 has achieved iconic status as a handmade Australian yacht with true integrity. Each example is built to order by a small family company with a rich heritage for fine craftsmanship. Of course quality takes time, with each one requiring an investment of 12 months and 10,000 man hours.

There’s more interior space than virtually any 48 foot yacht leaving ample room for all the comforts of a luxury motor cruiser. It features hand crafted American Cherrywood with a solid teak laid floor, genuine leather seating and a true entertainer’s galley complete with fridge, freezer, stove and microwave. You’ve a choice of cabin 3 layouts, each sleeping 6 adults in style and comfort.

Being a pilothouse saloon yacht, The Buizen 48 allows 180 degree vision with its wraparound windscreen, like a power boat. With the cockpit and saloon all on one level, the skipper can converse with the passengers, making the Buizen 48 a true social boat.

Performance Cruiser

As a yacht, the Buizen performs admirably. A first place in the inaugural Round the World Millennium Odyssey Race and a second in its division in the gruelling Sydney to Hobart attest to its strength and speed.

Its hull is hand laid solid fibreglass with triaxial reinforcement glass cloth, incorporating vinylester and polyester resins. All bearers, bulkheads, runners, stringers, floors and joinery are glassed into the hull for strength and rigidity. All timber is milled by our own factory and all joinery hand built by our own cabinetmakers and customised for each yacht. All stainless steel fittings are custom made.

Self furling sails and motorised winches let you pilot this thoroughbred at the touch of a button. Or with the sails down, its 1180 l. fuel tank and 110 horsepower turbo diesel engine allow a cruising range of around 1,000 nautical miles at 9 knots. Now the Buizen craftsmen have made it even better with the release of the Buizen 48 Series 3.

Series 3 Inclusions

The spirit of constant improvement has seen numerous innovations and refinements added to the Buizen 48 to create the new Series 3 edition. On the outside, the optional Midnight Blue colour in an ultradurable epoxy paint system adds elegance and on-water presence. The cockpit steering pedestal and command instrumentation console have been redesigned, and new stainless steel throttle controls installed in the cockpit and helm for user-friendliness as much as style. An optional hydraulically-adjustable boom vang can be conveniently operated from the cockpit while the autopilot is now the latest Raymarine 8002 series.

Inside, the Buizen ‘B’ symbol inlaid into the solid teak floor complements the bespoke interior while a larger island bed in the forward stateroom adds to its comforts. You’ve a choice of modern flush-fitting main cabin doors and solid timber louvre banks and all cupboards feature redesigned latches. Bathrooms feature a solid teak floor and a handcrafted teak seat in the shower stall, Caroma vitreous china basins recessed into Corian benchtops. New stainless steel Brodware tapsets feature in the galley and bathroom.

Hydraulic flow to the winches has been upgraded, while improvements in the engine room and plantroom ensure easier maintenance. Everywhere you look, the series 3 continues the Buizen tradition, enhanced by innovation.

Buizen 48 Review

buizen 48 yacht

Issue: December 2003

The big story in the European production yacht market in the past five years, muchtrumpeted in the yachting press, has been the growth of the pilothouse cruiser . The second-biggest story has been the steady increase in average overall length of the production yacht. All of this means that, in many ways, the production cruising yacht market has grown around the Buizen 48, a fully-equipped pilothouse cruiser, which has been around since 1991. Eddie and Fritz Buizen’s company Mastercraft Marine are now working on hull number 25, which means output has averaged more than two a year.

The Buizen 40, of similar configuration to the 48, was introduced in 1996, and the company is now working on hull number 11. That is a surprising number of pilothouse cruising yachts, each of them worth quite a bit of money, to be built by an Australian company into a limited market. The evidence shows that the Buizens got quite a lot right in the first place. Eddie Buizen is happy to point out that, in selling such a yacht, ‘if you get the ladies on side you are 75 per cent of the way there’. When it comes to sorting out a comfortable cruiser I’d back the ladies every time.

Women try to make sailing easier and more comfortable. Blokes, if left to their own devices, will forget or ignore the comfortable bits. Eddie’s premise confirmed the Buizen’s layout pilothouse layout, well-organised galley and saloon, comprehensive sail handling systems to make the boat easy for couples to sail, even retired couples (it is no coincidence that one 48 is called Prime Time). The Buizen 48 looks right. Naval architect Paul Stanyon drew the hull and gave it a fin and flared/bulb keel and a spade rudder, which has a shallow skeg for extra support.

The company literature calls the boat medium displacement and a fiddle with the calculator shows a displacement/length ratio of around 226, which is, indeed, a moderate figure. The Buizens have a couple of recommended layouts but owners are free to specify their own requirements within limits particularly as to how the bow area is arranged. The saloon incorporates the internal helm station, a refuge for the skipper in bad weather as the steering station includes a joystick control for the autopilot. Visibility is excellent through the 12mm toughened glass.

People are concerned about the big windows, says Eddie, but we’ve had 40s and 48s come through very bad storms, including waves breaking over the coachroof, without problems’.

Aft of the saloon there is a guest double cabin on the port side and a smaller cabin to starboard, which houses a berth and the nav station. Some people fit the washing machine in here; one owner deleted the single berth in favour of a workshop. The portside double cabin never changes. The galley is forward and down three steps to the lower level, immediately below the forward windows so there is plenty of light. You can exercise your own discretion here, too, in detailing. One had the microwave below the two-burner cooktop so it could be gimballed; another preferred a stove here, and the microwave at eye level. The master cabin is in the bow. One layout shows a guest cabin on the starboard side with stacked bunk beds. The boat photographed here dropped that in favour of a lounge area incorporating two lounge chairs and a wall-mounted TV. Interior trim is in teak, lots of it, reflecting the company’s beginnings, which was the supply of interior fit-out kits for the boat building industry.

After building some 70 boats with in-mast furling (including the earlier Zeston range) the Buizens have done 10 recently with inboom mainsail furling. Eddie reckons the new systems work fine as long as the boom’s angle to the horizontal plane is precisely set, and not a lot of tension is applied to the halyard. They use the Brisbane-made Furlboom and Leisurefurl from NZ. Masts are by local man Phil Bate. We saw two 48s on our visit. The boat shown here is cutter-rigged; the 130 per cent genoa is power-furled and the staysail is on a manual furler. Runners are there to support the mast when the staysail is used in a blow and can be tacked down in a number of positions.

The other boat is a sloop; a removable forestay can be set up to steady the mast in a sea. There are two sets of spreaders with continuous diagonals, which can, of course, be adjusted at deck level. The primary winches are powered. Standard auxiliary power is a 100hp Yanmar or Volvo; more power, or less can be specified. The Yanmar on the test boat was quiet and very smooth. The engine room, beneath the salon floor is big enough to work in, and includes the generator and optional air-conditioning systems.

Eddie says the company has tried all the available propeller systems and currently uses the Tristream four-blade stainless steel folding prop, made in Melbourne. A beautiful prop, works very well with no vibration, says Eddie. The auxiliary engine runs a shaftdrive. For our test sail we were up against it because the weather went bad, we had to postpone and the boat had to leave for Fremantle by a certain date. The afternoon before she was due to leave the delivery crew had decided to go around the top, because a relentless series of fronts made the southerly route unappetising we took her out and found almost no wind.

All I can say is that the 48 moved surprisingly well in ghosting conditions and tacked without hesitation, a procedure that involved part-rolling the genoa so that it eases through the gap between inner and outer forestays and then unrolling it again. The photographs show there was no discernible bow or stern wave though sails are drawing and the boat is moving steadily in the right direction. Then the wind stopped, dead. There was none, not negotiable. Pack up and go home. The Buizen 48’s Sail area/displacement ratio, the real measure of horsepower, is a bit lower than the average production cruiser/racer (as it should be), but is on a par with boats of similar configuration (such as Beneteau’s Wauquiez 48 pilothouse model) so there should be nothing wrong with her all-round sailing performance.

The only locally built boat like the Buizen 48 a semi custom pilothouse yacht is the Binks Farr 51 Pilothouse from South Australia, but that is a different boat in both style and execution, a lighter hull with a less traditional interior. The Buizen 48’s styling is timeless, and designer and builder obviously got the numbers right in the first place. The boat has not dated, because it looks right, because of the flexibility in layout and because technological improvements in electronics, hardware and deck gear can be accommodated (as in the transition from mast furling to boom furling) because each boat is virtually a one-off.

In the world of increasing mass-production and short model life it is nice to see success derived from a hand-made craft built to order. It is nice to talk to Eddie Buizen about his boats because he has great affection for them. He enjoys the teak with which his boats interiors are trimmed. I comment that the colours of the 48’s Burmese teak trim are well matched. There is always a bit of difference between the solids and the veneers, he says, but that’s the beauty of timber.

Buizen 48 Series II 2007

boat dealer

Description

Specifications, buizen 48 - exceptional blue water cruising yacht.

Over the years Buizen yachts have carved out an enviable reputation for building exceedingly high quality blue water cruising yachts. The Buizen 48 has become an iconic Australian built cruising yacht with a global reputation.

The Buizen 48 was conceived by two Australian boat builders, Eddy and Frits Buizen. Designed in collaboration with Australian naval architect Paul Stanyon whose brief was to design a luxurious blue water pilot house yacht. A yacht that despite its size, could easily be handled by a couple and was capable of circumnavigating the globe in safety and comfort.

Every Buizen yacht is custom built and optioned to the owner’s specific requirements. A Buizen yacht is a far cry from a mass-produced production boat. Craftsmanship at this level cannot be rushed and Mastercraft Marine take around 12 months to produce each yacht. With meticulous attention to detail, a staggering 10,000 man hours is invested into every Buizen yacht built.

‘Elevation’ is an exceptional example of the Buizen 48 and is presented to the market as a turnkey global cruising yacht. To say the inventory is extensive, would be an absolute understatement.

The pilot house saloon is the centre piece of the design and delivers 360 degree panoramic ocean views. Everywhere you look you are surrounded by rich warm teak and the craftsmanship is breath taking. The L-shaped settee at the dining table is upholstered in luxurious leather and the table can be folded and reduced in size. To starboard is mission control and the navigation table is awash with electronics. From here you can keep watch from the comfort and safety of the leather upholstered captains’ chair. And if you are sailing through the tropics and the heat is getting to you, then you can always switch on the Cruise Air air conditioning.

The Buzien 48 was designed to be easily sailed by a couple and Elevation has been optioned with in boom furling to make the job even easier. Naturally there are electric winches and the bow thruster makes handing in close quarters a breeze. The cockpit is large and spacious and there is plenty of shade at the helm curtesy of a custom-made hard dodger. The hard dodger also houses a large array of solar panels on top, has built in lighting with its own switchboard, and some very practical grab rails on the underside. At the helm is Raymarine Hybrid touchscreen chartplotter and an Echopilot forward looking sonar.

The owners cabin forward features a large double pullman berth, a settee with luxurious leather upholstery and a desk with a swing out chair. Again, there is an abundance of rich warm teak that gives you the feeling of being surrounded in luxurious comfort. Storage is very well catered for with large hanging wardrobes and numerous cupboards on all sides. The private ensuite has a separate shower stall with a curtain and the benchtop is Corian. The guest cabin is in the port aft quarter and features a double bed and some nice storage options with draws and cupboards. There is an additional single bunk in the aft starboard cabin that also houses the washing machine.

The galley is superb and has been thoughtfully designed to maximise usable bench space for preparing meals. The bench tops are Corian and have moulded fiddles the whole way around. There is a large fridge and separate freezer that have both 24v and 240v compressors. The owners have added some additional LED lighting under the cabinets that ads a classy and practical touch to the galley. There is a good quality Broadwater two burner stove with oven and grill and a microwave to complete the cooking package. There are twin stainless sinks with a fitted chopping board and draining rack, and a saltwater tap to preserve fresh water. Having said that, there is no real reason to preserve fresh water on Elevation, as the Sea Recovery water maker is capable of producing 150 litres of fresh water per hour.

The engine room is huge and easily accessible directly below the saloon floor. There is very good access to all of the onboard systems, and everything is clearly labelled. The 110hp Yanmar diesel had a complete rebuild in Feb 2019. With a marine engineering background, the owner has maintained the boat to an outstanding level. He has also designed and custom made a considerable amount of additional equipment with a strong focus on being self-sufficient in remote parts of the world. Examples of this are a propeller puller, gearbox coupling puller and a cutlass bearing puller that are constructed of heavy-duty stainless steel and all have their own mounting brackets in the engine room. Indeed, the list of spare parts is extensive.

The power generation systems onboard are impressive and have been designed for extended cruising in remote locations. There is a total of 1040W of solar panels and two Eclectic Energy D400 wind generators. An Onan 7KVA generator and twin alternators on the engine. And with the ability to produce an endless supply (150 l/hr) of fresh drinking water, the possibilities are endless. Battery monitoring and charging systems are all taken care of by top quality Mastervolt electronics.

Elevation was commissioned by the current owners and she was launched in 2007. The owners have spent the past 10 years circumnavigating the globe on her. They have done an exceptional job of fitting the yacht out for extended live aboard cruising and regularly updated the inventory to the point where there is nothing left on the wish list. They have also done an exceptional job of maintaining her, and the way she currently presents is an absolute credit to both of them. Elevation is ready to provision and sail off into the sunset tomorrow.

Sailing With A Spinnaker

Navigating the open waters while sailing downwind is the perfect time to fly your spinnaker, which is an experience that we believe every sailor should have the opportunity to enjoy. With that said, the great experience of flying a spinnaker can quickly turnaround if the spinnaker wraps around your forestay.

What Causes A Spinnaker To Wrap?

Before we get into how to recover from your spinnaker being wrapped around the forestay, let’s first dive into why you may run into this issue.

There are a few factors that can work in combination to cause this issue. These factors include:

  • Sudden shifts to the wind direction or pressure.
  • Improper trimming of your sails, including the mainsail.
  • An insufficiency in the coordination of the crew.

Today, we will be focusing on sudden shifts to the wind direction or pressure and how that can cause your spinnaker to begin wrapping around your forestay.

Sudden Shifts to the Wind Direction or Pressure

When flying your spinnaker, you want to keep a close eye on the wind direction as a sudden shift in direction can easily and quickly alter the air flow and pressure blowing into the spinnaker.

Changes to Wind Direction

As a spinnaker is traditionally used when sailing downwind, catching the air like a balloon or parachute, a sudden change in wind direction can cause the sail to depower and begin falling towards the mast. Another possibility with sudden changes in direction is if the wind angle shifts far enough, the wind could actually push the spinnaker towards the mast, catching on the forestay. If this happens, the spinnaker can begin to wrap very quickly and tightly, making it difficult to recover quickly.

Changes to Wind Pressure

Along with any changes in wind angle, sudden pressure changes can occur. The most likely scenario that will cause your spinnaker to wrap around the forestay, has to do with your mast and mainsail. As the wind angle changes, your mainsail will need to be adjusted to remain in an optimal position. If the mainsail is positioned where it blocks some of the air flowing into the spinnaker, it can create a low-pressure zone. This is what happened to Parlay Revival in the video above.

This low-pressure zone is in front of the mast with high-pressure zones on each side of the mast flowing into the spinnaker. This creates a suction of turbulent air that will pull the spinnaker towards the forestay! If this suction effect is strong enough, the spinnaker will begin to wrap around the forestay.

If your spinnaker gets wrapped around the forestay, it can be a scary experience if you aren’t in open waters, as you are now stuck without a headsail. The key is knowing which direction the spinnaker wrapped around your forestay and what your options are for unwrapping it.

Many sailors will start off by attempting to unwrap by hand, but this will be extremely difficult and time consuming as the wind will have done a great job of tightly wrapping up the sail.

Our Recommendation:

  • Depower your mainsail and seek open water or shelter in a marina as safety is the main priority.
  • Determine the direction and how tightly the spinnaker is wrapped.
  • Release the spinnaker sheets to alleviate tension.
  • If you are in open water, steer the boat upwind to decrease pressure on the sail.
  • If possible, release the spinnaker halyard to reduce tension further.
  • Carefully unwind the spinnaker from the forestay, being sure it doesn’t snag on anything and rip.

Optional Solution For Furling Headsails:

If your headsail is on a furler, you can release the headsail sheets and use the furling system to easily and quickly unwrap the spinnaker. This is the solution that Parlay Revival used!

The Above Solutions Didn’t Work?

If the wrap is severe and you are unable to clear it with the above methods, don’t worry, you aren’t out of options yet! Here are a few of our recommended next steps you can take.

  • Complete a controlled drop of the spinnaker. Lower the spinnaker halyard fully and gather the sail on the deck. Make sure the sail is clear of the water and safely stowed.
  • Raising the headsail. In some scenarios raising the headsail can help push the spinnaker away from the forestay, making it a bit easier to unwrap.
  • If all else fails and you are entering a dangerous situation, cutting away the spinnaker might be the only safe option as a last resort.
