The most eye-catching changes are a 36-foot glass-paneled swimming pool on the main deck aft and a 968-square-foot air-conditioned gym on the bridge deck. That space used six tons of folding glass doors to create a winter garden. It’s complemented by a large cinema screen.

Perhaps the most significant change, though, is the yacht’s conversion from private to commercial use to allow Carinthia VII to enter the charter market. “The deal was made for the boat to come to our facility on a handshake, and then we only had a couple of days to prepare between the handshake and Carinthia VII sailing up to Hamburg,” Thomas Krischkowski, head of refit and repair at Lürssen, told Robb Report .

The list of technical upgrades completed by Lürssen includes a new waterpower treatment, a full sprinkler system, 18.6 miles of cable for a new AV/IT system, new exhaust filters and fully overhauled engines and zero speed stabilizers. The yacht also had to meet new SOLAS stability requirements to be a charter vessel.

In 2002, when the Austrian billionaire Heidi Horten commissioned Project Faberge, as Carinthia VII was originally known, expectations ran high. The yacht paid homage to the fleet of Carinthia s owned and built by her late husband Helmut Horten, three of which were designed by Jon Bannenberg.

As one of only a handful of women to commission one of the largest yachts in the world, Horten called upon one of Bannenberg’s protégés, a young Tim Heywood, to pen the design.

Superyacht Carinthia VII

Horten had become an overnight sensation in the art world six years before commissioning the superyacht, after she spent $22 million in a single Sotheby’s auction. Renowned for her keen eye, she ensured Carinthia VII reflected a similar level of artisanal craftsmanship.

The original curved laminated teak planking, forward of the owner’s deck and bridge deck, is described by Fraser broker Antoine X. Larricq, who managed the sale, as “haute-couture detailing.”

Other original features include the thick exterior teak decks and cross-hatched parquet floors, which remain in fantastic condition, largely because Horten only used the yacht for her annual summer cruise.

The new owner, also a keen art collector, had two strict requests for the refit: to seamlessly marry the old with the new, and for the shipyard to complete the work within 300 days, so he could enjoy the winter cruising season. He enlisted Italian studio Bizzozero Cassina Architects to oversee the design.

The studio only had two yacht projects before this. But it had completed residential projects for the owner that brought a similar look to Carinthia VII’s 8,800-square-foot interior, including redoing all eight guest cabins.

The walls are covered in fabrics by Venetian artisans, and the central staircase is decorated with handmade, laser-cut tiles in an ombré-patterned blue that transitions from deep-ocean blue on the lower deck to pale-sky blue on the bridge deck. On each floor, the artwork in the lobby matches the color of the staircase, and classic gold elements have been replaced with a more contemporary silver.

A full exterior paint job updated the hull to Majestic Blue, with the superstructure in Matterhorn White and the external deck walls painted in Shark Grey. Following a few minor tweaks at the shipyard, Carinthia VII will soon cross the Atlantic to make its charter debut in the Caribbean.

The Majestic Transformation of Carinthia VII: A Luxury Yachting Revolution

Carinthia VII luxurious transformation at Lürssen shipyard

The Majestic Transformation of Carinthia VII

In luxury yachting, few events stir as much excitement as unveiling a newly refitted superyacht. The 97-meter Carinthia VII, a icon of luxury and engineering prowess, has been redelivered from the esteemed Lürssen shipyard in Hamburg, marking a significant milestone in the yacht’s illustrious history. This transformation reaffirms Carinthia VII’s status at the pinnacle of luxury yachting and introduces her to the charter market, a move eagerly anticipated by enthusiasts and connoisseurs worldwide.

Acquired by a visionary owner in 2022, Carinthia VII’s refit was orchestrated to surpass the conventional boundaries of luxury and performance. Initially shrouded in exclusivity, with only a select few having glimpsed its interior, the yacht embarked on a comprehensive journey of rejuvenation under the guidance of the parent shipyard Lürssen.

“A refit is not just about necessary maintenance, it can also be a way to completely transform a yacht,” says Alberto Perrone, Refit Sales Director at Lürssen. “Whilst the shipyard is known globally for its many new build superyachts, the refit side of the business is just as exciting and challenging for the skilled workforce.”

Innovative Design and Luxurious Amenities

The transformation of Carinthia VII under the expert guidance of Bizzozero Cassina Architects, alongside the operational insight of RYacht Management, stands as a symbol of visionary design and architectural mastery. The duo synergized to weave a tapestry of elegance, technology, and heritage, propelling Carinthia VII into the limelight of modern luxury yachting.

The pièce de résistance of the refit is the 11-meter swimming pool installed on the main deck. This feat of design ingenuity features a striking glass front, etched with seamless precision, that dissolves the boundary between the pool and the dining area, inviting the outside in and creating an interplay of light and water. The pool’s ‘stars&stripes’ blue hue, a sophisticated blend of blue with hints of grey, casts reflections reminiscent of the ocean’s depths, creating a mesmerizing effect that is both tranquil and refreshing. This thoughtful selection complements the yacht’s new color palette and harmonizes with the natural marine surroundings.

The surrounding teak deck, renowned for its resilience and beauty, has been meticulously restored to accentuate its rich, golden-brown tones, contrasting the pool’s calm serenity. This outdoor oasis, now graced with sumptuous sun loungers and casual seating areas, has been transformed into a haven for relaxation and social interaction, underlining the yacht’s commitment to creating exquisite guest experiences.

Inside, the commitment to preserving the yacht’s soul is evident. Each room maintains at least one piece of the original furnishing, a homage to the vessel’s storied past and a celebration of its timeless craftsmanship. The iconic wooden flooring continues to echo the yacht’s decades of maritime legacy with its intricate grain patterns and satin finish. It is now polished to reveal a luster that only time can bestow.

Elegant 11-meter swimming pool on Carinthia VII's main deck

The introduction of expansive, custom-designed lounge sofas in the main salon offers a tangible sense of comfort and luxury. These pieces are not merely functional; they are crafted to cradle and cocoon, promoting conviviality among guests. The sofas’ fabrics, selected for their tactile pleasure and visual harmony, are enhanced by bespoke carpets that sprawl elegantly beneath, their designs inspired by the fluidity and form of marine life.

The walls, adorned with hand-selected artisanal fabrics, create a canvas of texture and color that speak to a refined aesthetic. In a nod to craftsmanship, handcrafted leather tiles decorate select surfaces, their patterns laser-cut with precision to reflect the yacht’s innate connection to the sea. These tiles rise in a gradient of hues, drawing inspiration from the ocean’s depths to the sky’s expanse, further bridging the interior with the maritime world outside.

The meticulous redesign of the guest suites and owner’s deck aboard Carinthia VII marries the epitome of luxury with the pinnacle of functional design, meticulously tailored to those who will traverse the globe in her wake.

With a clear vision, the designers have curated visually stunning and superbly practical spaces, ensuring every journey is remembered for comfort as much as for the scenery.

The guest suites are a triumph of bespoke elegance, each reflecting a distinctive character while maintaining a coherent design language throughout Carinthia VII. Plush textiles and soft lighting create a serene ambiance, where every element, from the hand-stitched upholstery to the custom-designed furniture, is a silent nod to the yacht’s opulent spirit. The suites are thoughtfully equipped with state-of-the-art entertainment systems and personal climate controls, offering guests a private luxury sanctuary.

On the owner’s deck, functionality meets sophistication in the form of a teppanyaki round bar, a delightful addition that promises culinary entertainment right at the fingertips of the guests. This interactive gastronomic station, expertly crewed by a skilled chef, turns mealtime into a vibrant show of culinary artistry, further enhancing the communal spirit that luxury yachting embodies.

Carinthia VII's teak deck and serene outdoor relaxation area

Adjacent to this is the sundeck, which has been transformed into an al fresco paradise. New, ergonomically designed seating and a bespoke dining table set the stage for sumptuous outdoor feasts or tranquil afternoons basking in the sun’s warmth. The sundeck is the quintessential spot for guests to gather, enveloped by the expansive vistas of the open seas or the mesmerizing tranquility of secluded coves.

With its richly appointed interiors, the club lounge offers an intimate gathering space that harkens back to the golden age of yachting while incorporating the latest luxury amenities. It’s a space where tradition and innovation are in dialogue. It offers a sophisticated venue for post-dinner conversations, a nightcap, or a leisurely game from the yacht’s classic entertainment options.

Complementing the leisurely luxury, the gymnasium on Carinthia VII is a marvel of modern fitness technology. This fully air-conditioned sanctuary of wellness is equipped with professional-grade equipment that caters to every exercise regimen, whether it be strength training, cardiovascular workouts, or flexibility exercises. The gym’s panoramic glass walls flood the space with natural light and provide inspiring ocean views, transforming every activity into a refreshing experience that transcends the physical.

In every aspect, the guest suites and owner’s deck of Carinthia VII have been reenvisioned not just to meet but to exceed the gold standard of luxury yachting. The designers have deftly woven together the threads of luxury and functionality to craft inviting and exhilarating spaces, ensuring that life aboard Carinthia VII remains an unparalleled experience.

On Board 97m M/Y Carinthia VII with Capt. Luca Mosca

carinthia vii yacht new owner

Capt. Luca Mosca has helmed his fair share of large superyachts, but when the opportunity came to serve as captain on board the recently refitted 97-meter Lürssen motor yacht Carinthia VII, he jumped at the chance.

“She definitely is an iconic yacht, and this has been a huge push to my decision and will to become her captain,” Mosca says. “She is one of the first projects of the legendary yacht designer Tim Heywood, part of the Lürssen brand, full stainless-steel build … All of this, along with her history, her heritage, her sleek and elegant lines, her classic but contemporary interiors, and her exceptional performance make Carinthia VII a unique yacht. Being her captain is an honor and a responsibility too — her legacy is something special to take care of.”

Since her delivery in 2002, Carinthia VII has had continuous ownership by Heidi Horten. Carinthia VII’ s new owner was drawn to the yacht’s timeless Tim Heywood exteriors and spacious interiors, and the challenge of transforming a well-known private yacht into a commercial vessel appealed to him immensely. The main goal was bringing her up to commercial code and giving her all the appeal of a modern charter superstar, while being sympathetic to her original styling and details that make her the icon that she is.

This is the owner’s third major refit project, and for each he has been assisted by the same team, which includes his former captain Ralph de Joode, who now serves as owner’s rep, and the designers at Bizzozero Cassina Architects. According to de Joode, the owner had two non-negotiables for the refit: a short refit time and maintaining the yacht’s high standards.

The decision to refit the yacht at her original builder, or in this case Blohm+Voss, which now sits under Lürssen’s Yacht Refit & Services division was an easy one. “If you buy a Porsche, which garage would you take it to for a service? Porsche,  of course. That was our philosophy,” de Joode says.

RYacht Management introduced Mosca to the owner who was looking for a senior captain with charter experience and a good reputation. He comes from a long line of captains on his father’s side, and he began working in yachting when he was 20 years old. Over the years, he’s helmed some impressive yachts from 51-meter Mondomarine Tribu , which had a unique round-the-world cruising program, to 73-meter Nobiskrug Plan B , and most recently the 85-meter AKYACHT Victorious , for which he was interviewed by Dockwalk . His resume certainly fit the bill. “The owner and I were immediately a match, sharing the same vision and goals for him and Carinthia VII .”

The short turnaround time added a challenge to the already complex refit. “The full conversion from private to commercial registration was demanding and involved a lot of engineering works,” Mosca says. Structurally, to meet DNV commercial code, she had to be upgraded to a two-compartment ship, which required adding watertight bulkheads amidships on the tank deck and lower deck. She also received many new items, such as zero-speed stabilizers, shore power converter system, HUG exhaust gas filters, alarm and monitoring system, and firefighting system. Her engines received an overhaul, and the refit included a full paint job, darkening the trademark Carinthia Blue hull color to a shade dubbed Majestic Blue.

Carinthia VII now features an 11-meter-long pool on the main deck, partially covered by the overhand of the upper deck above. Like most refits, some compromises had to be made, like the fact that the pool sits on the deck itself, rather than being recessed, as tender storage is below. The yacht also has two new bars on the sun deck, a cinema/lounge on the upper deck, and a state-of-the-art 85-square-meter gym on the bridge deck. Other features, such as a teppanyaki grill, new swim platform, beauty salon, and upgraded spa area with a fold-down balcony, will add to Carinthia VII ’s charter popularity.

One of the notable things about the refit was what didn’t have to be changed because the yacht had enjoyed considerable upkeep over the years. The original woven parquetry flooring was sanded and oiled to look like new, and the majority of the original joinery was preserved, though the mahogany wood was changed from a high-gloss to a more modern matte finish.

Carinthia VII will winter in the Caribbean and The Bahamas, then head back to the Mediterranean for the summer. Capt. Mosca says what makes Carinthia VII an especially good charter yacht is that she will appeal to a wide range of clients, whether they like the idea of an iconic classic or appreciate something more modern. “Her interior has been carefully renovated, without overturning her classic nature, and we have a full array of brand-new water toys and tenders, including an 18-meter Windy chase boat,” he says.

Before taking on this role, Capt. Mosca was well aware of Carinthia VII ’s existence. “Since her delivery in 2002, she has been a point of reference in the industry, not just because she was the seventh yacht built for the same owner, but for the uniqueness and quite secretive aura of the project,” he says. “I still remember myself admiring her when she was docked in Antibes more than 20 years ago. At that time, I would never have imagined becoming her captain; it was just a dream, one which came true!”

10 cool facts about 97m Lürssen superyacht Carinthia VII

When Tim Heywood's preliminary sketches of 114.5-metre Pelorus  were shown to a prospective Lürssen client, the client was taken with the yacht's bold profile and distinctive lines. In 2002, those sketches sprang to life as 97.2 metre Carinthia VII . BOAT rediscovers 10 of the coolest facts about one of his most legendary creations ahead of her debut at this year's Monaco Yacht Show.

1. She was built for a serial yacht owner

Carinthia VII follows is the last in a long line of yachts named Carinthia, commissioned for department store magnate Helmut Horten and his wife Heidi. The first four yachts in the series were smaller, but the fifth was a 67.85 metre, also built by Lürssen , which was tragically lost at sea during her maiden voyage from Greece. The sixth Carinthia VI had better fortunes — the 70.7 metre was delivered in 1973 and used by Horten until his death, following which she was sold and renamed The One . Carinthia VII is the only yacht in the Carinthia line to be commissioned by Heidi alone.

2. The hull colour inspired the name "Carinthia Blue"

The unique blue hull colour was later marketed as "Carinthia Blue" by manufacturers Awlgrip. The paint colour was a key component of Hewyood's exterior vision, helping to create a powerful silhouette that has the appearance of being unbroken by the black windows.

3. Her interiors are by Ellerhorst and Kreuter

The yacht's interior styling has been seldom seen until now. Austrian studio Ellerhorst and Kreuter helmed the design, and has used a mix of different palettes and themes across her spaces. For example, the dining area is tropical and almost flamboyant, whereas the main saloon is pared-back, with coffee-and-cream tones offset by mint green. The design team had a volume of 3,643 gross tonnes spread over six decks, plus a beam of 16.6 metres to work with. Accommodation is for 14 guests in eight cabins.

4. She marked the fourth-largest yacht sale of 2022

Carinthia VII was sold in September 2022, with the sale announced just days before she was due to make her appearance at the Monaco Yacht Show. Antoine Larricq and Stuart Larsen at Fraser represented the seller, with Ralph de Joode from RYacht Monaco introducing the buyer. She was listed for sale in April and had a last known asking price of €95,000,000. Now under new ownership the yacht has been spotted at Blohm + Voss for refit works.

5. She was the largest yacht designed by Tim Heywood at the time of her delivery

Tim Heywood 's initial designs for Carinthia VII were unique; the yacht had a soaring forebody and a sheerline that sweeps downwards towards the stern. However, those characteristics were initially designed for Pelorus. It was only because Carinthia VII was several metres shorter that she was built first, with Pelorus hitting the water the next year with a few key changes.

6. She has an enormous onboard spa

The yacht's spa zone has been conceived as a fully-equipped wellness area on the water, with an unfolding sea terrace that allows direct access from the water from the gym area. As well as a spacious sauna, the yacht also has a steam-style shower room and a mosaic-clad plunge pool.

7. Her windows are bulletproof

One of the security features of this yacht is her bulletproof windows. As well as being practical, the windows also let in plenty of light and contribute to an airy feeling throughout the yacht.

8. Her helipad can accommodate a 5-tonne helicopter

The yacht has a number of high-calibre amenities including a touch-and-go helipad on the bow. Other highlights include a sundeck Jacuzzi and numerous dedicated spaces to lounge across her decks.

9. She was Lürssen's second-largest yacht at the time of her delivery

German yacht giant Lürssen now has 25 yachts over 100 metres in its fleet, but at the time of Carinthia VII 's delivery, she was its second-largest build, surpassed only by 139.3m Al Salamah , built in 1999.

10. She is the 66th largest yacht in the world in terms of length

In terms of LOA, Carinthia VII ranks somewhere around 66th place (depending on whether you factor in superyacht vessels). At the time of her delivery, she was around the 20th largest.

6 Architects That Are Now Creating Designs for Superyachts

Exciting yacht design doesn’t require reinventing the wheel. But a fresh view always helps. That’s why more yacht owners are looking for land-based architects and designers for their new build and refit interiors, preferring a cross-pollination of ideas over the tried and true.

The first owner to shy away from the traditional yacht designer set was billionaire Lukas Lundin, who tasked Italian architect Cristina Gherardi Benardeau to design the interior of the 274-foot Savannah. The Feadship, launched in 2015, is largely remembered as the first superyacht with a hybrid propulsion package. But the interior is just as radical.

Benardeau, a designer of retail space for Giorgio Armani and Christian Dior Couture, gave the 262-foot yacht the world’s first “Nemo lounge,” or a bubble in the hull where the owners and guests could see underwater.  It also featured what looked like a floating superstructure, employing long strips of tinted glass inspired by skyscrapers. (The same visual trick was employed later in Oceanco’s 361-foot Jubilee.) Savannah was the first boat to receive full metallic exterior paint job to blend in with the ocean surroundings—an idea later seen on superyacht Kensho, when it delivered in 2022.

Since then, a number of owners and boatbuilders have employed residential architects to do interior designs, as well as offer exterior flourishes (though naval architects complete the structures and running surfaces.) Rome architect Achille Salvagni has done projects for Rossinavi and Azimut, Lord Norman Foster created a series that later became the YachtPlus fleet, Lazzarini & Pickering designed the Benetti Motopanfilo 37M, and next year, Matteo Thun & Antonio Rodriguez will show their talents on Azimut’s SeaDeck Series.

Even residential stalwarts like Zaha Hadid Architects can’t help but experiment with nautical projects. Following the 2016 reveal of the firm’s Unique Circle Yachts series, the studio collaborated with Vitruvius Yachts this year on Britain’s new “royal yacht” project. And more recently, the architects unveiled concept renderings for Oneiric, a proposed catamaran in collaboration with Italian shipyard Rossinavi.

From skyscraper to sea, here are six yachts designed by mainstream architects.

<p>Architect Roberto Palomba has been designing houses for decades. His Milan-based studio, Palomba Serafini Associati, includes the Italian Consulate in Detroit, home décor and even tableware, among its past projects. His first yacht is the <a href="https://robbreport.com/motors/marine/amer-41-explorer-superyacht-cool-innovations-1234794265/">Amer</a> F100, which features a unique “Glass Cabin” as the main salon. It was designed in partnership with Ludovica Serafini. “My aim was to change some standard boat elements to create something completely different,” Palomba told <em>Robb Report</em> during the yacht’s world debut at the Cannes Yachting Festival. “Certainly, our perspective offers a fresh look, an architectural vision rooted in the world of architecture and interior design, translated into the realm of yacht design.” The Glass Cabin is an architectural glass box that encases the main salon and formal dining area with windows that are larger than other yachts with similar dimensions. The garden creates openness, light and a continuous connection with the sea. Continuing the theme, reflective surfaces are used on the walls and ceiling across all social areas to bring more light in, while stairs joining the main deck to the bridge are topped by more glass, opening the heart of the yacht to blue skies.</p>

He looked beyond the pool of yachting talent for a designer who could create a signature statement inside the 246-foot Admiral. The owner eventually decided on Paris design house Jouin Manku, an experienced architecture and industrial design studio, without a single yacht to its name. Co-founder Sanjit Manku took the design brief and ran with it, eschewing traditional yachting layouts for high-volume and big sea views. Variations on the established interiors include lofty 8.9-foot-tall ceilings, open-plan cabin layouts (where the bathrooms are on display) and locating the owner’s salon—more akin to an observation lounge—to the upper deck where the captains’ wheelhouse is traditionally located.  “We drew on our restaurant design experience to create an ambience and furniture that is practical yet opulent,” Manku told <em>Robb Report</em>. “The dining chairs have ski feet that make it easy for guests to slide in and out, and we incorporated flattering lighting rather than ceiling spotlights.” The end result is a stunning, personalized interior that is unique in yachting. </p>

<p>Refits are also getting design overhauls by non-yacht designers. Lürssen’s 318-foot <a href="https://robbreport.com/motors/marine/superyacht-carinthia-vii-refit-lurssen-1235333612/"><em>Carinthia VII</em></a>, first delivered in 2002 and designed by Tim Heywood, was sold in 2022 to a new owner. He called on Italian studio Bizzozero Cassina Architects for what turned out to be a major refit in a nearly record 300 days. The architectural studio is experienced in real estate, including a few of the owner’s private properties. But yacht refits are a recent addition to its portfolio. “The key to any project’s success is to know the person, their lifestyle and the way they think,” architect Paolo Bizzozero said. “Only with these three ingredients can you remedy a truly bespoke environment that works for them and for their life.” Key additions include a 1,334-sq. ft. sundeck, with a large dining table and teppanyaki grill. Equally impressive was the 39-foot-long glass-paneled swimming pool on the main deck (with two large televisions to view live sports), and a 968-sq. ft. air-conditioned gym on the bridge deck that also serves as a winter garden.</p>

Conceived to match the luxe design of a custom continental GT coupe, the sailboat features the same materials, motifs and craftsmanship on its cars and home designs, including the same hand-stitching found on the Bentley steering wheel and the yacht’s Malvern Chair. Bespoke one-offs include a bar and vanity unit, the captain’s chair and “Egg” table, and a sofa which was hand-built at Bentley’s engineering facility and finished in its signature trim. The brand’s iconic diamond-quilted hides were also included across entire yacht interior. Small details like the tissue box and drink coasters were created from scratch to match the owner’s taste.</p>

He had clear ideas about the functional layout of the boat, so he appointed commercial design firm Burdifilek to realize that vision. The Toronto-based co-founder, Diego Burdi, adopted a “marine design” approach. “I believe strongly that you should feel like you’re on a boat,” he told <em>Robb Report</em>. That is apparent in areas like the the lower-deck staterooms where the bulkheads hug the curve of the hull. Carved and layered wooden ceilings—a detail introduced from the owner’s experience in real estate—add drama and tactility. Most significantly, Burdi reversed the central stairwell and tucked it into the perimeter of the yacht to create a wider walkthrough and, in so doing, a work of art.</p>
