Yacht description.

This fantastic full carbon rocket is a fast sailing boat but easy to manage and a fully experienced racing crew is not needed. It has the purpose of being sailed in full extended racks mode or even in normal position in relax mode. Thank’s to the seating position on the racks of the crew, it is safe, comfortable and easy to handle. Nevertheless, you will not find another 28’ as fast as this boat or only with complicated mechanisms like canting keel and trapezes. This boat is really well thought of because it can be launched within minutes with a single hoisting point, the sails raised in just a few seconds, and there you go.

The keel can be chosen with 2 different depths but is fixed under the hull with 2 bolts. The Cayman28 is designed by Mark Mills.

The simple no-backstay rig is adjusted with underdeck forestay and jib tack purchases, relying on the pin-adjustable shrouds to make rig setup easy and repeatable.

Deck and Cockpit

The all-carbon sportsboat features extendable racks that allow the crew to produce far more righting moment than a conventional hiking position, as well as a more comfortable seating position. In daysailing mode with the racks in it becomes a simple sporty daysailer, with the flat cockpit floor running forward to the stem to produce a more secure foredeck.

The sliding racks are very successful, providing a more comfortable seating position than a conventional cockpit with a very solid feel even with 5 full size crew, leading to the description ‘Gentleman’s Skiff’.  The racks have sockets for carbon stanchions to carry a webbing strap for more comfort when extended or better enclosure when sailing with them retracted.  The appendages are all carbon, with a weed knife in the keel and a lifting rudder blade allowing easy weed-clearance in the Caribbean. 

Three hatches on the floor offer access under the cockpit, revealing a Lombardini 10hp inboard and storage space.

Doyle Sails Structured Luff onboard Cayman 28

The Doyle-powered Cayman 28 launched on Lake Balaton last week, the newest design from Mills Design is an all carbon sports-boat.

Stefano Nava of Doyle Sails international design group has worked closely on this project during conception and design studies, and together with Mark Mills has utilised the Doyle Sails Structured Luff technology to ensure load-sharing throughout the rig makes for an easily adjustable and quick-to-set-up high performance sail boat.

“It was a very enjoyable process made up of “brainstorm sessions” with Mark, Tony and the owner. That really helped nailing down the “easy performance” nature of the project, something very fun to sail with a strong sport boat attitude and easy handling.” says lead sail designer Stefano Nava “The Structured Luff technology was brought into play early on as we quickly realized how it would simplify some of the handling, for example allowing a no-runner rig set-up, without compromising the performance. The technology, thanks to the extra trimming gear that can bring to any project, allowed us to reduce the upwind sail inventory to a very simple and effective Main and Jib combo, still managing to cover efficiently the intended sailing range.”

The Cayman 28 was designed specifically for a Cayman Islands client to enjoy high-performance racing with his mates, and was launched on Hungary’s Lake Balaton by Code Yachts just in time for their largest event of the year, the Blue Riband.  Described by the team after successfully completing the 96-mile race on only its second-ever outing as a ‘Gentleman’s Skiff’.

Designer Mark Mills said after the race “It was debatable whether our shake-down sail should be one of the world’s largest races, but it was beautiful.  Racing down scenic Lake Balaton in company with almost 600 starters on a single start, and finishing after a nighttime battle reaching with 42 footers with Code Zeros… memorable!”

Cayman 28 : Exclusive carbon fibre rocket from Lake Balaton

The Code Yachts shipyard has already attracted attention with exciting, super-light carbon fibre racers, such as the Code 8 or the Canting-Kieler Code 10 . Now comes the shipyard's next project under the name Cayman 28. Originally planned as a one-off, the exciting racer is now to go into series production after all.

Marc Mills' design is built entirely from carbon fibre at Code Yachts, as a sandwich construction with epoxy resin. The complex engineering for this comes from SDK Structures in the USA. The fin of the deep T-keel and the rudder blade are also made of carbon fibre, as is of course the entire rig. The mast from Axxon Spars with two strongly pitched spreaders has no backstay and no runners. Instead, a fully battened mainsail with a wide square top can be set.

The construction on deck is also exciting. As with a modern skiff dinghy, the deck of the Cayman 28 is designed as a lowered hull from bow to stern. There is no cabin superstructure. This also has advantages for guiding the genoa upwind, which lies as low as possible at the neck and clew, even below the edge of the deck. This reduces turbulence above deck and ensures an efficient airflow.

An innovative detail are the flexible outriggers (racks), which are extended by around 70 centimetres on both sides in regatta mode and thus provide additional righting moment. In harbour and for transport, the racks remain retracted as an integral part of the deck edge. The width is then still a roadworthy 2.53 metres.

However, the keel with a draught of over 1.90 metres remains permanently attached. A lifting keel is also not yet planned as an option. With a total weight of 1,100 kilograms ready to sail, the proportion of ballast is around 50 per cent. On the other hand, the sail area downwind (main and jib) is an impressive 47 square metres. This results in a sail carrying capacity of 6.6, which represents an extremely high performance potential. Accordingly, the Cayman 28 is also penalised according to the ORC handicap: according to ORC measurement letter For construction number one, which goes by the name of "Rooster", the boat has a GPH rating of 545.1 with a crew weight of 300 kilograms.

Cayman 28.0 Executive: the new boat by Ranieri International is a mix of comfort and adrenaline

One of main novelties introduced by Ranieri Internation for the 2020/21 season , the Cayman 28.0 Executive is therefore destined to conquer the market of the cabin-equipped RIBs thanks to her large volumes both on the main and the lower deck, which houses a generous sleeping zone, thus making the latest Italian shipyard’s creation a very impressive day cruiser.

The Cayman 28.0 Executive is based on the same hull of the Cayman 27.0 Sport Touring , with three supporting skids and two steps for minimum rolling resistance and maximum comfort at sea . A double task that, as we will see, the 28.0 fulfills with full marks.

  Exteriors: a super solarium on the bow and a lounge-looking cockpit

This clever solution allows to sunbathe in total comfort and safety thanks to the presence of two sturdy stainless steel handles.

The edge of the plexiglass windscreen is equally made of stainless steel and protects the console, where two displays are dedicated to navigation and engine data respectively.

There, passengers can enjoy an extraordinarily cosy living zone : the large U-shaped sofa , convertible into an additional sunpad, seems to have been carved out between the two bulkheads that rise above the tubulars and allow to take advantage of high and comfortable backrests.

On the stern, the lateral platforms facilitate the access to the water while, on the bow, the deck is raised above the rest of the deck to give volume to the cabin, which can be accessed from the left side of the cockpit.

Interiors: much more than a simple cabin

Essential but refined, the interior layout of the Cayman 28.0 Executive guarantees good habitability : the 165 centimeters of headroom and the almost 3.5 meters of width make this boat a pleasant and comfortable relaxation oasis, where a large double bed exploits the maximum beam while a separate head completes the night setup. In short, despite the size of the hull, the spaces below deck are really surprising.

Sea Trial: an extraordinarily seaworthy stepped hull

At 2,500 rpm , the boat gets up on plane with a speed of over 15 knots: responsiveness is excellent thanks to this innovative stepped hull that drastically reduces friction while delivering excellent seaworthiness. Not surprisingly, the boat glides on the waves without never losing control.

At 24 knots – at this cruising speed, fuel consumption is really great (around 41 l/h) – we begin to have fun: after some turns and a “8” to test the behavior of the boat in the presence of slightly more demanding waves (the sea today is flat), the Cayman reacts with impressive speed and cuts the wave like a knife, without any hesitation.

Tubulars do not vibrate , the hull is stable and adrenaline grows. We raise the trim a little and push the throttles all the way down because it’s time to get to the point. The rev counter seems to have gone mad: 5,000, 5,500, 6,000 rpm in a matter of seconds and a top speed of 44.5 knots . What a RIB, guys! And what a hull! An extraordinarily seaworthy hull.

In conclusion, if you like RIBs, the Cayman 28.0 Executive is the right option for you: agile, exciting and safe. Furthermore, she hides a really comfortalbe cabin inside. Your partner will convince you to test her.
