In this age of technology and ever-present cameras, it seems impossible to fly under the radar – even more so when you’re one half of one of the industry’s most powerful couples. But money can buy anything, including privacy, in a world that has long forgotten the meaning of the word.

Eos is one of the world’s largest and most famous sailing yachts and a record-breaker until the 2017 arrival of Oceanco’s Black Pearl, a stunning sailing masterpiece that is believed to have inspired the construction of the future record-breaker, Jeff Bezos’ Y721. Whenever Eos makes an appearance in public, much like a superstar, it draws attention and makes headlines, yet, for all this, it remains an enigma.

Here is an attempt to lift the veil as much as possible on this enigma, a $200 million vessel that is said to be the epitome of luxury, elegance and, not in the least important, outstanding design. After all, you don’t become an icon (enigma or not) by conforming to standards.

Eos is named after the Greek goddess of dawn, the daughter of titans Hyperion and Theia, and sister of the sun god and the moon goddess. Eos is a sailing yacht, a three-mast Bermuda-rigged schooner that relies on a couple of MTU 4000-series engines for outstanding performance, regardless of the wind conditions. At full throttle, Eos can hit top speeds of 16 knots (18 mph / 29.5 kph).

Built by luxury shipyard  Lurssen  on a Lurssen naval architecture, an exterior design by Bill Langan, and interiors by Francois Catroux, Eos was delivered in 2006, after a three-year construction phase. Since delivery, it has had one single owner and he’s been keeping it a secret on purpose, as it serves as the family yacht.

That owner is billionaire media mogul Barry Diller, known as  “Diller killer”  in the industry because of his exceptional negotiation skills. He is married to fashion designer (and icon in her own right) Diane von Furstenberg, who is often erroneously referred to as the owner. Together, the two have an estimated net worth of $5.2 billion as of 2022, which means that, yes, they can definitely afford a $200 million vessel, as well as keep it a secret from the public by not chartering it.

At 93 meters (305 feet) in total length, Eos is among the top 5% yachts in the world by LOA. The fact that it’s a sailing vessel would have been enough to draw all eyes to it at port, but the three 61-meter (200-foot) masts make it an unforgettable sight, as does the deep dark blue hull. Eos has a teak deck, an aluminum hull, and aluminum superstructure. Much of the superstructure was repaired after an extensive fire in 2012, when the ship was at harbor while Diller and von Furstenberg were visiting ashore.

A later refit program, throughout 2018 and 2019, was even more extensive: the Rodal rigs were removed, repaired and repainted, the hull and superstructure were repainted, the tank arrangement was reorganized and the engines were overhauled. Onboard systems like the treatment unit and the watermaker were also serviced then, and navigation systems were brought up to speed with state-of-the-art equipment.

With an interior volume of 1,500 GT, Eos offers accommodation for 14 guests across seven suites and a crew of 21 – a necessarily high number because sailing it is no single-man job. Eos was never offered for charter, though legend has it that it has hosted some of the biggest stars in the world, including Jeff Bezos on his final week as Amazon CEO in 2021, singer and actor Harry Styles, and television host and reality star producer Andy Cohen.

Because it’s always been used privately, details on the interior are as scarce as photos of the same, but again, legend has it that features a viewing lounge with panoramic views, a jacuzzi, a 4.2-meter (14-foot) mural of the world map, and a most glamorous staircase made of glass. A 2.7-meter (9-foot) tall sculpture by Anh Duong, showing Diane von Furstenberg, graces Eos as figurehead. von Furstenberg usually posts to social while onboard Eos during summer-long journeys, but she always makes sure her photos don’t show much of the interior.

In 2009, when Eos pulled into an Australian port for some maintenance work, captain Lucas Alexander told the local  media  that sailing Eos felt like living in a high-end villa at sea. He also said that the vessel never traveled by a preset itinerary, which, if true, probably helps with keeping it a mystery.

American billionaire’s Eos yacht sails into Ullapool ahead of boat festival

A billionaire media baron’s superyacht sailed into Ullapool ahead of the launch of a brand-new festival for boat enthusiasts.

The Eos yacht, thought to be the fifth largest privately owned sailing yacht in the world, was spotted sailing into Lochbroom on May 7 after a journey from Hamburg, Germany.

According to Business Insider , the $200 million Eos yacht belongs to billionaire American businessman Barry Diller and his wife, millionaire fashion designer Diane von Furstenberg.

Previous guests on the superyacht include Oprah Winfrey, Emma Thomson and Jeff Bezos, according to Business Insider.

The luxury boat’s arrival comes ahead of Lugger Fest taking place from May 10 to 12 at Ullapool harbour, which is set to see a fleet of vessels come together and connections being made between lugger groups.

Music, food and talks will be on offer at the three-day event, with events such as dockside demonstrations and activities, as well as a “Parade of Sail”.

Ullapool Harbour master Kevin Peach said: “Ullapool Harbour Trust were delighted to welcome superyacht Eos to the village. Owned by an American businessman, EOS arrived from Hamburg and dropped anchor in the bay for a week of pre-voyage preparations.

“With a multinational crew, including a skipper and deckhand from Lochinver, Eos has engaged some local senior school pupils to assist with their preparations, plus sample life on-board the third largest three-masted schooner in the world.

“Eos contrasts to the fleet of herring fishing boats heading to port this weekend for the inaugural Lugger Fest. Around 14 lug sailing vessels are expected, with the 143-year-old West Cornwall Lugger Barnabas the daddy of the fleet. On Sunday morning the harbour will welcome cruise ship Spirit of Adventure with 1500 passengers and crew to finish off a very varied and hectic weekend of vessel arrivals.”

Her interior is styled by design house François Catroux and she was delivered to her owner in November 2006. Lürssen's largest sailing yacht completes six-month refit

The 92.9-metre schooner Eos has now completed a six-month refit with Lürssen , having arrived at the shipyard's Hamburg facilities in October 2023.

Work included an overhaul of all three masts, booms and rigging components, an upgrade to the automation system and a new coat of paint. Her halogen lighting was also converted to LED while her hull, masts and certain sections of the superstructure were repainted.

Delivered in 2006, Eos is the largest sailing yacht built by Lürssen and, at the time, was the largest sailing yacht in the world. She has since travelled over 200,000 nautical miles. Her exterior is owed to the late  Bill Langan , with interior design by  Francois Catroux .

At the time, Eos captains Shairp and Cottle said: "We are proud to return to the builder for this Special Survey and yard period. Planning with Lürssen over the last 18 months has been thorough and they offer a total commitment to the redelivery date."

She is expected to return to Lürssen in five years' time for her 20-year survey.

Eos ' previous refit was at Royal Huisman in 2019, which saw a major engine overhaul as well as the removal, inspection and repainting of her Rondal rigs. 

Lürssen recently welcomed the 90-metre sailing yacht Athena for a substantial interior refit.

A General Description of Sailing Yacht EOS

This sailing yacht EOS is a superyacht of important proportions. This 93 metre (305 foot) luxury yacht was the work of at Lurssen Yachts in 2006. EOS used to be named the project or yacht name 13636. Superyacht EOS is a upscale yacht that is able to sleep as many as 16 people on board and has approximately 21 professional crew. The naval architect who actualised her design for the yacht was Lurssen. Bill Langton / Francois Catroux was also responsible for this boat's interior styling.

The largest private sailing yacht in the world as launched in 2007, she knocked Athena off the number one spot. The yacht features a 14ft world map mural supplied by Hand Made Maps Ltd. in her interior and is reportedly owned by Barry Diller and Diana von Furstenburg.

Building & Design with respect to Luxury Yacht EOS

The yacht's wider design collaboration came from Lurssen. The technical naval architect intellectual property are the creation of Lurssen. Sailing Yacht EOS received her elegant interior designing from the interior design firm of Bill Langton / Francois Catroux. Germany is the country that Lurssen Yachts constructed their new build sailing yacht in. After her formal launch in 2006 in Bremen she was afterwards delivered on to the yacht owner following sea trials and testing. A beamy feeling is brought about with a total beam (width) of 13.5 metres or 44.3 ft. The material aluminium was used in the building of the hull of the sailing yacht. Her superstructure over the hull is fashioned from aluminium.

The vessel retains twin robust MTU diesel engine(s) and can accelerate to a swift maximum limit continuous speed of around 16 knots. The engine of the ship generates 2332 horse power (or eos kilowatts). Her total HP is 4663 HP and her total Kilowatts are 3480.

Superyacht EOS Guest Accommodation:

Providing bedding for a limit of 16 welcome guests staying on board, the EOS accommodates everyone in luxury. Normally the vessel uses around 21 capable crew members to maintain and sail.

The Caribbean is the place to be on New Year's Eve if you're a billionaire with a superyacht. Here's a look at the islands that currently have the most docked yachts.

Superyachts belonging to billionaires all over the world pop up in a few Caribbean hot spots during the holiday season. Nassau is just 315 miles off the coast of Florida but Saint-Barthélemy, the most popular island, is 1,000 miles past that.

Saint-Barthélemy, also known as St. Barths or St. Barts, is the Caribbean island where the vast majority of superyachters anchor to ring in the new year.

While many resorts and restaurants will host New Year\'s Eve parties on the island this year, one of the most iconic is the annual Nikki Beach party.

This year, the evening will include DJing by Kygo. Fortune reports that a table at the party costs upwards of $10,000.

Superyachts currently docked in St. Barts include Rising Sun, the 454-foot vessel owned by media mogul David Geffen, and Symphony, the 331-foot yacht owned by Bernard Arnault, the third-richest man in the world.

Eos, the 350-foot sailing superyacht owned by billionaire Barry Diller and his designer wife, Diane von Furstenberg, is also in St. Barts.

St. Barts and the island of Saint Martin are only separated by 17 nautical miles.

Sint Maarten, the bottom Dutch half of the island, is the more popular vacation destination over the top French half of the island, Saint-Martin, according to Vanity Fair.

Bloomberg previously reported that the superyacht count in Sint Maarten swelled to 52 in December — the count in November was 16.

Aside from St. Barts, another popular destination is neighboring Sint Maarten.

Abramovich, a Russian steel magnate and owner of the English Premier League\'s Chelsea FC , bought the vessel in 2009. At 533 feet long, Eclipse was once the largest superyacht in the world, until it was overtaken by Azzam in 2013.

The ship was recorded by MarineTraffic as docked in St. Maarten earlier this week, but is now docked in St. Barts . Abramovich reportedly owns 70 acres on the south side of the island , according to the New York Times.

Also in St. Maarten? Ecstasea, a 282-foot superyacht previously owned by Abramovich. Bloomberg reported that the yacht, now owned by a Pakistani billionaire, crashed while docking in the St. Maarten marina on Sunday , December 29, knocking down an operator\'s booth.

Eclipse, Russian billionaire Roman Abramovich's superyacht, was recorded as one of the 52 yachts passing through St. Maarten this month.

Here Comes the Sun, a 272-foot vessel owned by Russian drilling billionaire Alexander Dzhaparidze, is also in Antigua.

Tiger Woods\' 155-foot superyacht, Privacy , is en route to Nassau , according to MarineTraffic. The total number of vessels, including superyachts, at port in Nassau is 140.

Meanwhile, there are 160 total vessels at port in both St. Maarten and Antigua .

St. Barts , however, still reigns supreme: It has 170 vessels at port.

Other spots with a spike in superyacht activity include Bahamian islands like Nassau. Still, when it comes to New Year's Eve, St. Barts is king.

An inside look at jeff bezos’ $500 million superyacht and what it costs to keep it afloat.

Cliché but true, the second-richest man on the planet, according to Forbes , owns the tallest sailing yacht in the world . In fact, the 417-foot Koru is so big, it has its own 250-foot support vessel .

Priced at $500 million, the Koru hit the sea for the first time in 2023 and has since ferried Jeff Bezos and company around the globe. Complete with three massive 229-foot masts, it can reach a top speed under sail of 20 knots, according to the New York Post — which is approximately 23 miles per hour.

Made for a group, up to 18 guests can set sail on the yacht, allowing Bezos to bring family and friends on vacation with him. Here’s a look at the Koru’s extravagant features and how much it costs to operate his floating mansion.

As expected Bezos’ yacht is dripping with luxury. With a net worth of $203.8 billion — as of May 4, 2024, according to Forbes — he can afford to outfit the Koru with nothing but the best and he did just that.

The superyacht has three outdoor decks, with two containing swimming pools, according to the New York Post. It also features a cinema, several lounges and multiple business areas, according to Luxuo .

Highly personalized, the yacht is complete with a figurehead modeled after Bezos’ fiancée Lauren Sanchez. Even its masts are luxurious, as the Amazon founder chose in-boom furlers, which keep the canvases at the bottom of the mast above the deck, creating a pristine and spacious rope-free deck.

Support Vessel

One of the most shocking features of the Koru is the fact that it requires its own support vessel. The $75 million Abeona features a helipad that Sanchez has been spotted using to park her personal helicopter, according to the New York Post.

Designed to carry extra gear, four jet skis, two fast launches and a dinghy were spotted on the Abeona during a 2023 trip to Mallorca, Spain, according to the New York Post. It’s also capable of lifting a small submarine, but Bezos isn’t believed to own one — at least not yet.

Additionally, the support ship has two extra staterooms, which can accommodate four guests. This could come in handy if Bezos wants to entertain a larger group than can fit on the Koru.

On-Board Crew

It probably isn’t a surprise that operating both the Koru and the Abeona is no small task. From staff to drive the boats and maintain them to caring for guests onboard, Bezos needs a small army at sea.

The Koru has a crew of up to 36 people, according to The New York Post. If you think that’s a lot, the Abeona requires up to 45 crew and support staff.

Annual Operating Costs

Purchasing the Koru and Abeona cost Bezos more than half a billion dollars, but his expenses didn’t end there. As you might imagine, the annual cost to maintain a superyacht and its own enormous supporting yacht is more than most people earn in a lifetime.

The Koru costs approximately $25 million in operating expenses per year, according to the Daily Mail . Much less, but still sky-high, Bezos spends around $5 to $10 million on annual maintenance costs for the Abeona, according to Super Yacht Fan ).

When their owners are on dry land, yachts have to find a parking space. However, even this doesn’t always come cheap for Bezos and the Koru.

In November 2023, the billionaire’s yacht arrived in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, but was too big to fit in the port with all the outer superyachts, according to the Daily Mail. Therefore, it had to be docked with cruise ships at Port Everglades, at a rate of $16,500 per week.

While one week of storage might be more than the average person can afford, picking up the tab for any number of weeks would clearly be no issue for Bezos. While his superyacht and the many expenses surrounding it are clearly astronomical, he’s still living well within his budget.

Meta boss Mark Zuckerberg reportedly flew to Panama to celebrate his 40th birthday — where the billionaire’s alleged brand-new $300 million superyacht was docked.

Zuckerberg, who has been linked to the 387-foot-long vessel called “Launchpad” for months but has never publicly confirmed whether he is the owner, traveled to the Central American nation on Monday by private jet, according to tracking data viewed by Business Insider .

Launchpad and its smaller companion vessel, Wingman, were also docked in Panama on the same day, the outlet said, citing ship-tracking data.

Adding fuel to the rumors, Zuckerberg posted a video of himself on what appeared to be a private plane on Instagram. Captioned, “Travel mode: on,” the video showed Zuckerberg wearing the Meta Quest 3 virtual-reality headset while en route to his destination.

While the exact whereabouts of Zuckerberg and his expensive fleet of travel options are difficult to confirm, the coincidences raise the possibility that the billionaire celebrated Tuesday’s milestone birthday aboard the vessel.

Zuckerberg currently ranks as the fourth-richest person in the world with an estimated net worth of $167 billion, according to the Bloomberg Billionaires Index .

The Post has reached out to Meta for comment.

In March, the Launchpad was spotted at Port Everglades in Fort Lauderdale, Fla., after making its maiden voyage from the Netherlands, The Sun reported .

Zuckerberg reportedly spent a cool $300 million as a “birthday present” for himself.

The outlet said the superyacht was originally Russian-commissioned, which caused a delay in its arrival to the United States due to economic sanctions.

Zuckerberg was seen touring the ship in the Netherlands in early March, according to The Sun.  

It is said to be the 46th largest ship of its kind in the world, with a steel hull and an aluminum superstructure.

The party boat was built by Dutch firm Feadship and features exterior design by Espen Øino International and interior design by France-based Zuretti Interior Design, according to SuperYachtTimes.

Launchpad requires a whopping $30 million in annual upkeep, according to the SuperYacht Fan blog .

It can purportedly house up to 24 guests and 48 crew members.

The world's first hydrogen gas fuel-cell superyacht, long rumored to have been commissioned by billionaire Microsoft founder  Bill Gates , is now officially for sale.

Dubbed Project 821, the 390-foot (119-meter) superyacht is designed to run on 'green' hydrogen — although to be stored as a liquid, the gas must be cryogenically stored at -423.4 degrees Fahrenheit in painstakingly designed, double-walled tanks.

Dutch  shipbuilder Feadship said the launch of this approximately $646 million vessel on May 4th at their Amsterdam shipyard sees the yachting world 'forever changed.'

The ostensibly ecologically friendly superyacht has taken over five years to construct from design to completion, with custom additions for the final buyer yet to be made.

While a spate of news reports in 2020 leaked that Feadship and design firm Sinot Yacht Architecture & Design had been commissioned by the billionaire to construct this hydrogen-powered eco-yacht, details verifying the Gates deal remained elusive. 

As one yacht industry trade publication knowingly put it at the time, 'While Sinot has denied Gates is building the concept, it is understood that Gates is in talks to build a new superyacht with an unknown yard.'  

That trade publication, BOAT International , published a statement from Sinot denying any official agreement with Gates for the luxury boat project.

Responding to reports in the Guardian and the Sunday Telegraph, Sinot said, 'Various articles have appeared in international media stating that Sinot Yacht Architecture & Design sold its concept Aqua to Mr. Bill Gates.' 

'These articles are factually incorrect.'

Feadship, however, only declined to comment entirely, telling MegaYacht News that it 'does not comment on its order book.'

And this month, news broke on financial news site Benzinga that Gates intended to sell his ownership of an unknown superyacht as well as his $25 million yacht, the Wayfinder: a 224-foot catamaran-style boat built by famed shipbuilder Astilleros Armon. 

The Wayfinder, according to Benzinga , was 'designed as a shadow vessel, typically accompanying a larger mothership, which until recently, was not disclosed.'

The site, which covers stock market trades and other business news, indicated that this mothership was, in fact, Feadship's new hydrogen superyacht, Project 821. 

Unlike traditional yachts that rely on diesel engines or other fossil fuel-based means of propulsion, hydrogen fuel-cell yachts use hydrogen as their primary fuel source. 

Hydrogen gas (H2) reacts with oxygen (O2) gas in the fuel cell, producing nothing but pure electricity and pure water: H2O. 

'The aim has been to develop a new, clean technology not just for this project, but for the world,' Jan-Bart Verkuyl, Feadship's director and CEO, said.

The company added that the size of the yacht made it a good candidate for exploring the feasibility of a pure green hydrogen-powered fuel-cell system.

The ship's liquid hydrogen fuel requires approximately 8-10 times more storage space than traditional diesel fuel for an equivalent amount of energy, Feadship said.

All that fuel tank space, alongside the 16 fuel-cell energy converters themselves, plus the needed switchboard connection for the DC electrical grid, and a set of water-vapor emission vent stacks, added 13 feet to the ship's original specs.

'For those captivated by cutting-edge innovations,' Feadship said in a statement, 'this yacht presents an opportunity for potential acquisition as it showcases the pinnacle of modern technological advancements.'

The company pitched the high-priced luxury vessel as an investment in the sustainably technology's future, like a glamorous R&D project. 

'Investing in the required technology is necessary to make the transition away from fossil fuel,' Feadship said, 'and hydrogen is one of the most efficient and cleanest options.'

But, environmentally conscious amenities aside, Project 821 does also serve its elite market of wealthy seafarers with a variety of 'superyacht' prerequisites.

The ship has five decks above the waterline and two below sea level. 

It has 14 balconies, seven fold-out platforms, a pool, a Jacuzzi, a steam room, two bedrooms, two bathrooms, a home gym, pantry, and two offices each with a fireplace.

The ship also comes with space for its owner to stock a full library.

According to Feadship, the boat's power and food stores allow for an 'entire week’s worth of silent operation at anchor or [briefly] navigating emission-free at 10 knots while leaving harbors or cruising in protected marine zones.'

'It creates, in essence, a secluded four-level townhouse-by-the sea,' the firm boasted in their press release, 'within the much larger yacht.'

British RWD Studio, rather than Sinot, was reportedly responsible for crafting Project 821 ship-exterior and interior décor, deploying marble, rattan, taupe eucalyptus and limed oak to create, in Feadship's words, 'a luxe coastal vibe.'

When pressed for comment this year, a Feadship spokesperson reiterated that it would not be disclosing who had originally commissioned the eco-superyacht, nor who would ultimately buy the ship. 

'Feadship does not share any information about owners and prices,' the firm said, 'whether it is a 19-meter yacht from the 1960s or a 119-meter yacht from the 21st century.'

Financial advisors are quick to warn prospective owners that a boat is nothing more than a hole in the water in which to throw money. When it comes to superyachts , you'd better have bags and bags of cash.

As one luxury agent told Business Insider at the Palm Beach International Boat Show: "Buying a boat, it's a huge purchase — and nobody needs a yacht."

A superyacht, generally over 30 meters long, is one of the most expensive assets money can buy, with the largest costing more than a lot of real estate or a private jet. Billionaires like Jeff Bezos, Mark Zuckerberg, and Steve Jobs each spent nine figures on their megayachts.

That doesn't include operating costs. Owners should expect to pay about 10% of a yacht's new-build price each year, experts told Business Insider. That's tens of millions of dollars annually for the most luxurious boats.

"It's a small-to-medium-sized business in its own right," said Jeffrey Beneville, a senior vice president at insurance company NFP, where he specializes in consulting clients about yachts.

Unlike many smaller boats, superyachts need staff, not just a captain. Some superyachts have space for dozens of crewmembers , including a chef, engineer, and masseuse for the guests onboard. Each gets an annual salary — the highest-ranking members earn six figures — and benefits. Eric Schmidt's yacht fits a crew of 28 for a ratio of about two crewmembers per guest.

Then there's fuel, dockage fees, routine maintenance, and insurance. The latter hinges on everything from the reputation of a yacht's shipyard to where an owner wants to take it (if a vessel is taking frequent trips to the South China Sea, for example, expect to pay a higher premium). If a superyacht has a support yacht — or a support superyacht, in Bezos ' case — expect to pay another 10% of that boat's price annually.

"The cost to maintain a yacht is so high that they just think that money's getting lit on fire," Matthew Fleissig, the CEO of wealth management firm Pathstone, told BI of his clients who choose to charter rather than own.

One of his firm's clients who does own has a 23-meter yacht valued at $5.2 million. The annual cost to staff, maintain, dock, and insure the boat is $346,297, according to documentation provided to BI. The lion's share is spent on marina fees ($95,970) and maintenance work ($88,408.) While not exactly a Sunfish, that boat is too small to count as a superyacht.

At 106 meters, the Amadea, owned by a sanctioned Russian oligarch , definitely does. The $300 million yacht, which was seized in 2022 and is docked in San Diego, cost $922,000 a month to maintain, a court filing showed: $360,000 for crew salaries, $75,000 for fuel, $144,000 for insurance, $178,000 in dry-docking fees, and $165,000 for maintenance, waste removal, food for the crew, and miscellaneous expenses.

"And that's an inactive yacht that's in the water," NFP's Beneville said.

If it were operational and carrying guests, the costs would be about twice that, or between $20 million and $30 million a year, he added.

Of course, it makes more financial sense for the non-obsessives to charter, and many of Fleissig's clients do. And some owners choose to offer their yachts for charter — the most luxurious cost as much as $1 million a week — to offset the costs.

"If you charter the boat for 50 days a year, it's going to help a lot," Anders Kurtén, the CEO of brokerage firm Fraser Yachts, told BI.

Then again, the running costs don't matter as much at a certain point. "If you're worth $30 billion, it's nothing. And if you're worth $117 billion — and these are the guys we're talking about — they're in it as long as it's still enjoyable for them," Beneville said. "It's not a money thing."
