Historical:
Wiki – The boat’s name comes from Lulworth Castle, which belonged to her second owner, Herbert Weld, whose grandfather was a charter-member of the Royal Yacht Squadron. The Lulworth (1920) was built by the White Brothers’ Yard for Richard H. Lee, who wanted a racing boat to compete in the premier yachting league in Europe: the British “Big Class”.
Shortages in the supply of premium spruce after World War I meant that Lulworth’s original lower-mast was made of steel instead of wood. This constraint handicapped Lulworth greatly, leaving her trailing older, more famous Big Class racers like Thomas Benjamin Frederick Davis’s Herreshoff-designed schooner Westward (1910), HMY Britannia I (1893) and Sir Thomas J. Lipton’s Fife-designed 23mR Shamrock (1908).
Her gaff-rigged sail plan was updated several times to no avail, until America’s Cup naval architect Charles Ernest Nicholson redesigned the rig with a wooden lower-mast and adjusted the keel balance. By 1924, Lulworth’s flaws were corrected and she became an accomplished racer in all subsequent seasons of the Big Class: from 1920 to 1930, she took part in 258 regattas, taking 59 first places, 47 of which were after 1924.
Obsolescence and revival
The 1930 America’s Cup in saw the arrival of the innovative J-Class designs that made all gaff-rigged yachts obsolete. Despite The Lulworth’s early successes against the J-Class Shamrock V (1930) before the America’s Cup, handicapping rules in the Big Class were ended and Lulworth’s racing career was over. In 1947 Lulworth was saved from the scrap yard by Richard Lucas and his wife Rene. She was taken to Whites Shipyard for restoration and mud-berthed in the River Hamble where she served as a houseboat.
In 1990 her hull was shipped to Italy in hopes of a refit. A meticulous renovation was started in 2002 which saved 70% of her furnishings and 80% of her steel frames. The sail plan from 1926 was replicated to recreate Lulworth’s rig, which features the world’s tallest wooden mast. She was relaunched in 2006. Lulworth immediately re-entered racing competition and subsequently won Boat International Award for the “Best refit of 2006”. Lulworth is the world’s largest cutter.

Lulworth back after 70 years
- May 9, 2006
Successful completion of the most authentic restoration ever 9/5/06
The world’s largest gaff-rigged superyacht is back in the water after an absence of 70 years. Restored in a five-year project costing an estimated ?15 million, the 46.50m (152ft 6in) Lulworth was re-launched in La Spezia, Italy.
Built in England in 1920, Lulworth was one of the most successful Big Class cutters ever. Now, with over half of her original structure and 80 per cent of her original interior intact, she has been hailed as the restoration of the century. A brand-new website detailing the entire project will be launched at the end of May on www.sylulworth.com.
The spectators were next treated to the sight of Lulworth being reversed onto a giant 43 x 18m raft. Water was pumped in and out of this hollow pontoon to keep Lulworth and her cradle at a constant angle. Once secured, the 52m main mast – the largest wooden spar in the world – was successfully craned and onboard to tower above Lulworth’s superlative teak deck. With the 9.50m bowsprit and preliminary rigging in place, the pontoon and yacht were towed to La Spezia.
The launch took place at the Arsenale Militare Marittimo, making Lulworth the first foreign-flagged vessel to enter this top-secret stretch of Italian coastline since 1850. As she entered this high-security naval complex, the crews of the submarines and battleships downed tools in awe. Lulworth was placed in a huge dry dock, which measures 200 x 50m and has a depth of 18m.
The dock was drained and the pontoon filled with water to weight it to the floor. As 225,000m of water were pumped back into the basin over eight hours, divers released Lulworth from the blocks and cradle: It was the first time that the queen of cutters had floated unaided for seven decades.
Sea trials are currently being held off the Italian coastline as the crew learn to get the most out of Lulworth’s total sail area of 1450m. Early performance indicators are promising: In 18 knots of wind, Lulworth has already reached 15.5 knots (digitally recorded) while towing a 4.5m tender. After a VIP guest appearance at the Cannes Film Festival, Lulworth will make her racing debut at the Argentario Sailing Week in June. She will also take part in the Imperia, Cannes and St Tropez regattas.

How very sad to see her looking so unkept in the film. I only hope that she is looked after and kept looking as she did on her first days after her relaunch. How did the wonderful boat ever fall into the hands of such a person. I never thought Johan J.M. van den Bruele would ever sell her.
Dear Maria Christina Sabatini, as former owner of Lulworth, I am very pleased she is back in Europe and that she will be used for for training activities in the Scuola Nautica di Gaeta. I hope to see her back in all her glory in the classic regattas in the med. Kind regards, Johan J.M. van den Bruele.

Timber titans: 7 of the best wooden superyachts
Fundamental.
Wooden construction is the most traditional of boatbuilding methods, dating back thousands of years, and there are still several notable examples of wooden superyachts cruising the world’s oceans today.
The 38.75 metre Fundamental (ex- Alyssa ) is a cold-moulded wooden motor yacht which embraces minimalist beauty. Delivered in 2014 by Turkish builder Tansu , she can accommodate up to eights guests and five crew members.
At the request of the owner, she was intended to evoke a casual, beach club feel. The lifeguard huts and laid-back culture of South Beach in Miami inspired the finishing touches of her interior. Her wooden superstructure, reinforced with epoxy, harmoniously compliments her beach house style. Tansu aimed to focus on al fresco entertaining, devoting considerable space to her outside deck and lounging areas. This classic and comfortable design favours simplicity over ornamentation and her light weight means that she can reach a top speed of 21 knots.
The vast majority of new wooden superyachts are currently being built in Turkey and Mengi-Yay is one of the key players. The 2016 launch Aquarius sports a stylish modern exterior styling by Oğuzhan Güler with an almost vertical prow, which belies the fact that both the hull and superstructure were built from cold-molded, epoxy-laminated timber.
Bahadir Sen from Mengi-Yay told Boat International : “We don’t hestitate to use wood because it gives us the ability to make rapid changes in ongoing projects. Wood is more flexible than steel and laminated wood is more durable than GRP, but the final decision always belongs to the customer.”
More about this yacht
Yachts for charter.
Built by White HW and launched in 1920, the 46 metre gaff-rigged cutter Lulworth is one of the oldest sailing yachts still cruising today. Her mahogany hull is reinforced with steel frames, while both the decks and superstructure were crafted from teak. Lulworth’s has undergone several superyacht refits over the years, the most recent of which was in 2006, and her accommodation can sleep up to seven guests in four cabins.
The tri-masted Camper & Nicholsons sailing yacht Creole is widely regarded to be one of the most beautiful classic yachts in the world . This wooden schooner features an all-teak construction, including the hull, deck and superstructure.
Mikhail S. Vorontsov
Despite her classic styling, this 52.4 metre motorsailer was launched as recently as 2013 by Turkish yard Dream Ship Victory . A 2014 World Superyacht Award winner, Mikhail S. Vorontsov sports a laminated wooden hull and luxurious interiors created by Balk Shipyard in the Netherlands. Accommodation is for ten guests split between five cabins and she boasts a cruising range under power of 2,950 nautical miles at 12 knots.
Dream Ship Victory is currently working on an even larger wooden superyacht, the 141 metre Dream Symphony , which is due to launch before the end of this year.
Launched in 2004 by American yard Hodgdon Yachts measuring 47.12 metres LOA, Asolare (ex- Scheherazade ) was the largest cold-molded yacht in the world at the time.
Her 2014-15 refit at Front Street Shipyard in Maine saw her entire hull sanded back and repainted. This Bruce King -designed sailing yacht features interiors by British studio Winch Design with accommodation for up to six guests and five crewmembers.
Francesca Petrarca
These days Benetti is best known as the world’s largest motor yacht builder, but that wasn’t always the case. The 1941 launch Francesca Petrarca is proof of the Italian yard’s fine pedigree in building wooden sailing yachts.
Her oak and pine hull is reinforced with steel, while the teak superstructure matches her decks. This 49.41 metre triple-masted sailing yacht boasts accommodation for up to 11 guests, while twin General Motors diesel engines give her a top speed under power of 12 knots.

Lulworth firing ranges: when you can sail past safely
The Lulworth Ranges are marked on the chart east of Weymouth in Dorset, England, an area inland where the British Army carries out firing practice. To counter the small risk this might pose, yachts are at specific times advised to keep clear of this piece of coast. We’ve received permission from the South West Defence Infrastructure Organisation to reproduce the British Army’s information for mariners here, making clear when you can, and can’t, sail close inshore.
1. Army units conduct live fire gunnery training on Lulworth Ranges. During firing periods it helps us if mariners, please for their own safety avoid our sea danger areas and keep at least 1+ miles clear of the target buoys on St. Albans Head. Valuable training time can be lost when vessels stray into the weapon danger areas. Delays are frustrating and expensive, so we welcome your co-operation. Full details of the sea danger areas are available in yacht clubs. A map is reproduced on the back page for your convenience.
2. Daylight Firing. Normal firing times are (all times are Local):
Monday to Thursday Friday Friday firing weekends only
0930 – 0930 – 0930 –
1700 hrs 1230 hrs 1700 hrs
3. Night Firing. Tuesdays and Thursdays are chosen for night firing, sometimes other days are selected. Firing begins as soon as it is dark and lasts until 2359. Timings vary with the season of the year.
