James "Sonny" Crockett used a white 2006 MTI 40 Series offshore catamaran named Mojo as his main means of water transport in the Miami Vice film . With two Mercury 575 hp Engines and capable of 160 mph (260 km/h), the lightweight, high-speed powerboat is perfectly befitting of his wealthy, drug-dealing playboy alter-ego.

The boat's most notable appearance in the film is in the scene where Crockett and Isabella travel to Cuba, set to " One of These Mornings " by Moby feat. Patti LaBelle . In the Director's Cut of the film, the boat also appears during the newly inserted opening credits, where Crockett and Tubbs take part in a race around Miami's waterways and finish a close second. In this scene, the boat has an enclosed canopy fitted over its usually open deck.

Real Boat [ ]

The boat used in the film was designed and built especially for the movie. While externally indistinguishable from a regular racing boat, it featured several additional features to facilitate its use in filming, such as concealed camera mounts hidden beneath hatches in the hull and a large volume of internal wiring for the camera systems.

• The scene where Crockett and Isabella travel to Cuba in the MTI is very similar to the scene from the television series where Crockett and Tubbs travel to St. Andrews Island (in the episode " Calderone's Return (Part II) ").

MTI At 25—The First 340X Starts The Craze

In the history of Marine Technology Inc. in Wentzville, Mo., the defining moment in terms of growth has got to be the company’s introduction of the MTI-V 42 performance center console powered by outboard engines, normally of the Mercury Racing variety. It marks the turning point in which MTI founder Randy Scism and his team started looking at performance boating differently.

That was more than 10 years ago, and that 42-footer, which has since morphed into the most luxurious of luxury performance center consoles and opened MTI’s doors to new boating destinations and a much wider clientele range, in turn led to the next chapter of the builder’s catamaran supremacy when—four years later on Missouri’s Lake of the Ozarks in the summer of 2016—MTI showcased its first outboard-powered catamaran, the 340X.

At the end of August, on the Wednesday morning of the famed Shootout on the Strip along Bagnell Dam Boulevard during the 2016 Lake of the Ozarks Shootout, I was lucky enough to catch a ride in the company’s first 340X powered by twin Mercury Racing Verado 400R engines with MTI’s sales manager at the time, Tim Gallagher, and our good friend, Nikki Sorenson, a much more camera-worthy co-pilot than I for a cover shoot we did for the 2016 digital magazine pictured below.

With Sorenson and I on board, Gallagher showed off the 34-foot cat’s turning, comfort, maneuverability, acceleration and even how well it handled the bumpy Lake of the Ozarks waters. He then dropped me off with photographer Pete Boden to capture the running images of a new model that Gallagher, Scism and everyone at MTI who had their hands on the boat were extremely proud of at the time.

Scratch that, they’re still proud.

You see, that 340X was the building block to the twin-engine 390X and 440X catamarans, which were released three years apart in 2019 and 2022. To call MTI’s 340X anything less than “game changing” for the brand would be an understatement as the 34-footer, which MTI has built 44 of to date, took full advantage of the 400-hp offerings at the time and led to the incomparable 390X, which MTI has delivered 63 of and has another 33 on order.

Serious lineage, right? Little did I know during my ride in the 34-footer, which by the way was pretty basic compared to today’s MTI standards, that the boat would set the table for a couple of larger—and likely more popular—models with help from the next generation outboard engines from Mercury Racing.

The second 340X—does anyone remember which boat that was? hint you can find it by searching the speedonthewater.com archives—was vastly different from the first. And that’s the beauty of an MTI…and the main reason the MTI At 25 weekly series exists.

Marine Technology Inc. (MTI), builder of go-fast catamarans and luxury center-console vees, has announced plans to add a third model to its outboard-powered line of cats. Randy Scism , president of the Wentzville, MO-based manufacturer, said a new 44-foot cat will soon be joining the company’s popular 340X and 390X models.

“The 340X was a home run for us, and everybody loves it. And then we did the 390X, and that was a home run as well,” he says. “So we’re gonna try again.”

Scism said the new boat is a response to the many MTI clients who boat offshore and on large lakes. “We have so many clients boating on big water,” he says. “They’re in Florida traveling to the Bahamas, and on Lake Michigan. They’ve been asking if we could do a bigger version, so this is just the next natural progression for us.”

MTI is designing the new model from the ground up, with all new tooling, CNC and molds, with a goal to have the new 440X ready to display at the 2023 Miami International Boat Show. The result will be a similar but roomier configuration compared to its smaller siblings.

“The cockpit will be a little bit bigger,” Scism explains. “There will be more room inside the boat. Obviously, the running surface will be longer. The overall size will be bigger. It’s going to have more versatility. We feel like our 39′ is the best handling and running boat out there, both in adverse conditions as flat water. We want to build upon that give our customers a little bit more boat.”

Like their predecessors, the 440X will be powered by a pair of Mercury Racing 450Rs—at least, until the famed engine builder unleashes an even beefier outboard to the marketplace. In the meantime, Scism tells Speedboat that he expects the twin 450R package to be an excellent fit the 440X. “I think it will work just fine for us,” he says. “I hope it’ll run great and handle even better than our 390X does.”

Randy Scism’s daughter, MTI client relations director Taylor Scism , tells Speedboat that she’s stoked about the new model. “I’m really excited about it,” she says. “There are some things that we’ll be changing to make it quite different. But we’re continuing to go full force with our 340X and 390X as well—they’re fantastic boats, and the 440X will be a great addition to the overall family.” Taylor, of course, captured a Factory Stock class World Championship last season racing with Johnny Tomlinson in an enclosed-canopy version of the 39, called the 390XR. She is also in contention to be an international offshore racer in the new E1 World Electric Race Boat Series for the debut 2023 season.

MTI continues to market its line of I/O-powered catamarans, with five different models (38′, 40′, 43′, 48′ and 52′) in pleasure and offshore versions. “They’re still going strong, and we’ve got lots of those in production,” Scism says. “But we’re trying to give people an inboard ride with the outboard motors.”
