yacht club five dock

During the Second World War, the little town of Richland, Washington suddenly found itself with a large influx of residents coming to work on what was originally called the Hanford Engineer Works (HEW) – a secret operation and part of the government’s Manhattan Project. The primary function of HEW was the production of plutonium for the atomic bomb. This bomb ultimately ended the war with Imperial Japan and, according to authorities, saved many Allied and Japanese lives that would have been lost in an invasion.

Throughout the war, many area individuals had given up their recreational boating due to restrictions in river access and fuel shortages. Following the end of the war, some of these folks started bringing their boats out of hibernation and using them on the Columbia River. This, of course, got everyone thinking about some form of boating club and like-minded people began to informally gather. It wasn’t until 1948, however, that the first club, the Richland Boat and Fishing Club, was formally organized. Officers were elected and the first Commodore was Wesley Banta, a Baptist preacher.

As the new club gained membership, club officers contacted Colonel Clark of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers seeking permission to locate some boat docks along the Columbia River. Permission was given to use the shoreline north of Lee Boulevard and the club went to work. Boat docks were constructed – most privately owned but with a few owned by the club. The name of the club was changed to the Richland Boat and Yacht Club and then finally changed to the Richland Yacht Club (Club). At the time, most members had boats 18 feet or less in length; there were no yachts by today’s standards. The Club was incorporated in 1953.

With the focus of HEW shifting, the government decided to give the City of Richland (City) back to its residents. As part of the re-incorporation plan, they agreed to build a park for the City (Howard Amon Park) along the riverbank where the Club’s boat docks were located. This required relocating the docks but other sites could not be found on the Richland shoreline. Several locations were considered and, in 1955, the Club finally was able to obtain a five-year lease from the Corps of Engineers at the Smitty’s Marina location near Bateman Island.

The Club stayed at the Bateman Island location for a few years building a floating clubhouse for their meetings and looking for a better site. Ultimately a five-year temporary lease was obtained from the City on a small basin located at Columbia Point roughly where the Club is now. A long-term lease, however, was dependent upon the completion of $100,000 in improvements to this basin during the temporary lease. The Club succeeded and the City agreed to a 100-year sovereign lease for $150 per year on about eight acres of land and water. This agreement did allow the City to renegotiate the lease in the year 2011.

The Club enlarged the small basin with their own D-8 caterpillar tractor towing a large earth-moving machine behind. More wooden docks with covered slips were constructed and the floating clubhouse was towed upriver from Bateman and anchored in the new boat basin. The clubhouse was subsequently moved onto dry land and its size increased as the Club continued to grow in membership. Unfortunately, these new facilities were located in an area far from other Richland structures and were vulnerable to vandalism and break-ins.

In the early 1980s, the State began construction of the I-182 twin bridges connecting Richland to Pasco. Since these bridges would cross the Columbia River just downstream of the Club’s location, the State agreed to create a much larger basin by excavating the gravel needed for backfilling the Richland side of the bridges. This operation required the Club to temporarily relocate the floating boat docks to the far west end of the basin and effectively shut down most boating activities of the Club. Once the gravel had been removed and the basin enlarged, the City and the Club re-shaped the existing leased area to accommodate the expected development of the area.

In the early 1990s, the Club commenced gradual replacement of the old wood docks and covered slips with new concrete walkways and open boat slips. With a larger basin, with new docks being built, and with nearby sites being developed (condominiums, restaurants, golf course, etc.), the Club became a more desirable location for recreation and began attracting even more members.

With Columbia Point becoming quite attractive for developers, there were some who wanted to build on the Club’s leased land. After months of negotiations, the Club, the City, and one of the developers (T.R. Masterson Company), finally reached an agreement; the Club would give up the lease on its land with the City, the developer would purchase the land from the City, and in return, the developer would build a new clubhouse for the Club and deed the building and the land on which it sits to the Club at no cost. The grand opening of our clubhouse was held on July 5, 2003, with an impressive ribbon-cutting ceremony by Marian and Dale Metz our 1951 Commodore.

The new clubhouse and boat basin now serve as a focal point for the entire Columbia Point area and are just moments away from the best restaurants and shopping in Richland. And the Club continues to grow with more than 200 members and some 155 moorage sites. We are indeed fortunate that the founders of our Club, and those who followed, were so dedicated to boating on the Columbia River.

Concord Yacht Club has a rich history in the Knoxville community, beginning with the start of organized sailing on Fort Loudoun Lake about 1947 under the auspices of the Oak Ridge Power Squadron. They launched at Concord Boat Dock, lowering masts to clear the Northshore Drive Bridge. Several years later, moorings were set “outside” of Concord Park. The first race was recorded as having taken place on June 19, 1948, with the first Annual Awards Banquet at the historic Park Hotel in Clinton.

Concord Yacht Club was incorporated in October 1951 as a non-profit Tennessee Corporation, located on property acquired by TVA in association with the Loudoun Dam Construction Program. Prior to 1951 the site had been used as a seaplane school, which included a seaplane ramp and a Quonset hut that was used for a clubhouse. TVA later donated the property to Knox County for recreational use from which CYC now leases the property. The club continues operations on this same site today.

Volunteer efforts of the founders and subsequent generations of CYC club members have added docks, moorings, and other facilities, with members working together to maintain and improve the clubhouse, docks, and grounds. The year of the Club’s 50th anniversary a new clubhouse was constructed. Various initiatives and projects have contributed greatly to the camaraderie among its members.

CYC has several outreach programs to promote sailing in the Greater Knoxville Community. This effort includes a family sailing program, a summer sailing day-camp, adult learn to sail programs, adult keelboat handling classes, University of Tennessee sailing team, Sea Scout Ship 300, part of the Boy Scouts of America, and a high school sailing program.

For these programs, CYC has provided fleets at considerable expense, including Opti’s, JY-15’s, Sunfish, Catalina 22’s and other keelboats, race committee and safety boats and extensive equipment to maintain the highest quality inland sailboat racing and education programs.

How to Join

Membership bonds are available to anyone who is interested in sailing, willing to work annual service hours, abide by club rules, and pay annual dues. We do offer subsidized annual dues for Student and Young Active members. Members are not required to own a boat, and community boats are available for check-out for those who wish to join the Club Sailing Fleet.

All dock areas are gated and there are security cameras in most areas. The docks all have running water and electricity for casual use. Gasoline is available on Dock G at the Yacht Club.

Kayak Launch and Storage Facility

For residents who do not have space to conveniently store their kayaks or means to transport their vessels to the lake, the community has a kayak launch and storage facility located on I Dock in the Yacht Club Basin Marina. The 64-rack facility is covered, lighted, locked and surrounded by a dock to ceiling fence to secure the kayaks. Steps from the storage area are four state-of-the-art launch platforms which makes entering and exiting a kayak a totally dry experience. They are one of few such platforms in Greater Knoxville.

Quick thinking prevents potentially 'catastrophic' fire at yacht club in Braintree

Braintree firefighters put out a fire on a boat near the Metropolitan Yacht Club on Saturday, Aug. 12, 2023. Five people, including two children, were hurt.

BRAINTREE − Five people, including two children, were injured when the boat they were on caught fire at the Metropolitan Yacht Club's fueling dock.

A Braintree Fire Department captain said a retired Braintree police officer noticed the fire and used his boat to pull the burning vessel away from the fueling dock Saturday afternoon, WCVB reported .

The fire captain said six adults and four children were on the boat. Two children were taken to a hospital with smoke inhalation, a woman suffered smoke inhalation and minor burns, and two adults suffered potentially serious burns.

"This had the potential to be a catastrophic situation, but the quick thinking of the young woman at the fuel dock to hit the emergency shutoff and the actions of the retired officer pulling the boat away from the dock prevented that from happening," the fire captain told NewsCenter 5.

The boat was engulfed in flames and about 300 yards away from the yacht club when the Braintree Fire Department's boat arrived and put out the fire. The boat capsized.

Towboat USA will remove the boat from the water, the fire captain said.

Southern Marinas Buys Stock Island Yacht Club & Marina

Southern Marinas , a premier owner and operator of marinas across the nation, has purchased Stock Island Yacht Club & Marina in Key West, Florida, from SH Marinas 6000, LLC, an affiliate of Spottswood Companies, Inc. The sale of the marina will allow the seller to continue with its plans to develop a five-star resort and vacation rental on the retained upland portion of the property.

The marina will continue to serve as a focal point of the overall resort and, to ensure harmonious and integrated development and operation of the overall resort, Spottswood Companies has agreed to partner with Southern Marinas on the marina acquisition.

Matt Putnam, Andrew Cantor and Dan Grovatt of Colliers Leisure Property Advisors represented the seller in the transaction.

Stock Island Yacht Club & Marina is located at 6000 Peninsular Avenue in Key West. It is a full-service marina in the lower Keys with 100 wet slips that have immediate ocean access, and more than 200 dry slips for boats up to 50+ feet. Currently, amenities include a waterfront pool, private beach, fitness center and sauna, and restaurant, called Jack’s Poolside Bar.

The marina has three waterfront villa units available for rent. The land has been approved for 148 hotel and transient townhome units that are intended to be developed by Spottswood Companies and its partners, including Brightwild, the Spottswood-affiliated vacation rental platform. The Spottswood family, a seventh-generation Key West family, worked with the Monroe County Planning Commission to rezone the marina from mixed commercial use to a destination resort. Plans were approved prior to listing the marina for sale.

Colliers also assisted the parties in working through obstacles related to the separation of the retained uplands portion of the property from the operating marina components, ensuring a smooth transaction.

Spottswood Companies plans to break ground on the resort late this year.

Quayside Yacht Club (QYC) is located on the northwestern section of Lake Winnipesaukee, near Long Island Bridge. The view overlooks the northern part of the Broads, with Five and Six mile Islands in the foreground, and Bear Island in the background.  Originally the docks and a small building were part of Trexler’s Marina.  In 1986, 125 docks were sold by Trexler’s to form a condominium arrangement with Quayside Yacht Club.

Since that time many renovations have been made to the Clubhouse and pavilion area.  Over the past 2 years, the Club has been renovating the main dock sections and hope to complete the project this winter.  The effort to keep the Club in a prime condition is an ongoing endeavor which is shared by Members and Directors alike.
