yachts co to znaczy

Etymology [ edit ]

Circa 1557; variant of yaught , earlier yeaghe ( “ light, fast-sailing ship ” ) , from Dutch jacht ( “ yacht; hunt ” ) , in older spelling jaght(e) , short for jaghtschip ( “ light sailing vessel, fast pirate ship ” , literally “ pursuit ship ” ) , compound of jacht and schip ( “ ship ” ) .

In the 16th century the Dutch built light, fast ships to chase the ships of pirates and smugglers from the coast. The ship was introduced to England in 1660 when the Dutch East India Company presented one to King Charles II, who used it as a pleasure boat, after which it was copied by British shipbuilders as a pleasure craft for wealthy gentlemen.

Yacht definitions: What is a yacht? And does it need to have sails?

  • Top stories

By far the most common question we get asked here at Motor Boat & Yachting is ‘how can you call that a yacht if it doesn’t have sails?’ Here we explain why a boat doesn’t need sails to be called a yacht...

What’s in a name? Quite a lot if you’re a yacht! Not only are the names of yachts a source of endless amusement, but by defining your boat as a yacht in the first place, you’re setting up certain expectations.

Yacht definitions: A brief history

Whilst boating for fun dates back to Ancient Egypt and possibly even further than that, the word yacht comes from the Dutch ‘jachtschip’, which means hunting ship. Jachts were originally a class of sailboat used in the 16th century to hunt down enemies of the Dutch Republic.

However by the 19th century the term ‘yachting’ had developed to mean recreational boating in general, and with the advent of steam boats, sails were no longer the only method of propulsion available to Victorian yachtsmen.

Article continues below…

World’s largest superyacht: Everything you need to know about 183m REV

Hemingway’s boat reborn: how pilar was recreated in meticulous detail, recommended videos for you.

In the early 20th century (1904 to be precise), our humble magazine was launched under its original title The Motor Boat , but by the 1950s the ‘& Yachting’ suffix had been added to refer to the general pastime enjoyed by motorboat owners. We even reviewed the occasional motorsailer for those who liked to enjoy the benefits of both power and sail.

Today’s Motor Boat & Yachting is dedicated purely to powered leisure vessels from 25-125ft with the occasional foray above and below that when interest dictates. Current editor Hugo Andreae insists that he is ‘terminology agnostic’ saying, “I’m not bothered whether people refer to their boats as yachts, cruisers, power boats or gin palaces just so long as they enjoy using them. But for the record my 22ft Karnic is definitely a gigayacht!”

ceramic-pro-boat-coating-review-after-relaunch-hero

Editor Hugo’s Karnic 2250 is his family’s pride and joy, but should it be called a yacht?

What makes a yacht, a yacht?

Some would argue that a yacht has to have sails, and as we’ve seen, that was originally the case, but we here at Motor Boat & Yachting beg to differ, as its common to refer to large motorboats as motoryachts, superyachts or even megayachts without any expectation that they would have sails.

Others assert that a yacht should have to have a cabin in order for it to be fully considered a yacht, or that it has to measure at least 10m in length. If that’s the case then some longer narrowboats could be technically considered as yachts, although you’d be hard pushed to find anyone who agrees with that definition.

The final test for something to be considered a yacht is harder to pin down, but it is generally accepted that all yachts have to have a certain aesthetic or architectural appeal in order to earn this haughty moniker.

Whether a boat is worthy of being called a yacht is clearly subjective, but there’s one thing we won’t budge over – it certainly doesn’t have to have sails!

If it’s sailing yachts specifically that you’re interested in, you won’t find many of them here, but we can heartily recommend our sister titles Yachting Monthly and Yachting World , who know much more about them than we do.

Bigger yacht definitions: Superyacht, megayacht or gigayacht?

Beyond the simple term yacht, there are a few other yacht definitions worth clarifying. The most commonly used of which is superyacht .

The debate still rages over what constitutes a superyacht. Any pleasure yacht with a load line length of 24m or more (not length overall or waterline length as is often misquoted) and a gross tonnage of 80GT is classified as a Large Yacht under MCA coding rules, causing a number of additional regulations to kick in, most crucially the requirement for the skipper to hold a commercially endorsed Yachtmaster Offshore Certificate. This is the closest thing to a technical definition of a superyacht.

Azzam - the world's largest superyacht on of many belonging to Middle Eastern owners

At 180m Azzam is currently the largest yacht in the world, but an 183m gigayacht called REV is currently under construction in Norway. Photo: Wikimedia Commons

However, while this used to mean most leisure boats with an overall length (LOA) of 80ft or more fell into the Large Yacht category, yards have become so adept at designing bigger boats with a load line length of just under 24m that many craft with an LOA of 90ft or more still count as regular pleasure vessels.

For that reason some people prefer to use the simpler definition of a superyacht being any privately owned vessel with an LOA of 100ft or more. Even then some would argue that a true superyacht should be a custom built yacht of at least 35m or 120ft.

Such is the inflationary pressure on yacht sizes and terminology that the term superyacht itself has begun to lose currency among the yachting elite. Owners of craft over 50m now use the term megayacht to categorise their larger vessels, while the lesser-spotted gigayacht is reserved for yachts over 100m.

Fewer than 100 gigayachts have been built to date, making this the rarest of rare breeds. That said with the world’s largest yacht now measuring over 183m, it’s surely only a matter of time before the 200m mark will be broken and yet another term will be needed. Got any suggestions? After the tragic death of a deckhand during the launching of a Personal Watercraft from a large yacht the methods of launching craft have been under scrutiny. Please see the downloads above to read the case studies.

The usual method of launching PWC from the upper decks of a yacht are with the use of lifting slings and in some cases crew members board the PWCs during the lift to aid with the removal of the slings once launched. The potential issue with these slings is that they have the capability of sliding off the PWC if not 'perfectly' placed, stoppers can be used either side of the sling under the rubbing strake to reduce the possibility of this occuring.

Since this incident, risk assessments onboard vessels have been reviewed by Captains and Managing agents and many yachts have adapted their practices.

One measure that has been implemented by some yachts is changing over from the previously used lifting slings as seen in the image above.

Yes, yes we hopefully all know that no Jetski slings are built for 'man-riding' and in this example shows yet another reason they should not be used in this way both due to the lack of balance but also this would have overloaded SWL.

What this video does do is give an example of how these 'cradle' style slings have the potential to slip.. (regardless of man riding)

A practice that is becoming more common is a fixed system where metal plates are inserted on the inner skin at the bow of the PWC with pad eyes or lifting eyes on the outer hull. The combination of these and the D-rings on the rear or further pad eyes on the stern offer a four-point lift using an item such as Spectra© lines for lifting. The concept behind this system is valid however it is untested. Currently none of the 3 main manufacturers (Yamaha, Seadoo, Kawasaki) endorse this lifting system as the superstructure of the bow is not designed to take the weight of the PWC, it is simply fibreglass/FRP/GRP.

yachts co to znaczy

Whilst looking at some ex-yacht PWC (jetski) that utilised this system, stress fractures and cracking were observed which goes further to highlighting the risks (see adjacent example photo).

This issue is exacerbated by the fact that the PWC lifting systems are not checked during inspection/survey, unlike the davits/hiabs and lifting strops for the tenders etc. Some provisional communication with inspectors/surveyors has indicated that this may be because PWCs are classified as water toys rather than vessels but this doesn't change the fact that your SMS should include all items that are lifted, for the safety of the crew and guests.

The Solution = Certified Lifting Slings?

When looking around the market place for tried and tested lifting systems they are, admittedly, sparse. The two obvious options are to stick with the Seadoo lifting slings which are manufacturer approved (by Seadoo only) but the risk of 'slip' still exists and is highlighted by the crew fatality.

The second is a system introduced in 2015 that is a certificated 4 point lifting system that has a full conformity certificate with permanent fixings which can either be fitted by a dealer or your engineer/bosun onboard. Please click here for further details and purchase options.  (Price per kit £759.77 ex.VAT)

What makes a bluewater boat?

WHAT ARE THE ESSENTIAL FEATURES OF A BLUEWATER SAILBOAT?

One of the oldest debates in the sailing community surrounds the essential features of a bluewater boat . After buying a boat and crossing the Pacific we began to seriously question our definition of a bluewater sailboat and surveyed 56 boats that crossed the Pacific in 2016-2017 to find out what they had , what they didn’t, and whether it made a difference in their passage.

We also have a list of the 10 best bluewater sailboats (we analyzed 2,000 bluewater boats to find out!).

Note: This post was adapted from my April 2018 article in Ocean Navigator

6 CHARACTERISTICS OF A BLUEWATER YACHT

The traditional consensus seems to be that the “bluewaterness” of an offshore yacht boils down to six main elements . A full discussion on each feature is included below. According to many, the best bluewater sailboats have:

  • Cutter or ketch rig
  • Skeg-hung rudder
  • Heavy displacement
  • Reputable offshore builder
  • Large water and diesel tanks

This legitimacy of this list was bolstered by John Neal’s Boats to Consider for Offshore Cruising .   We paid attention because John Neal has sailed over 350 000 miles (including six Cape Horn roundings) and is considered a leading expert in offshore sailboat preparation.

BUYING A CRUISING SAILBOAT

When we set ourselves the goal of bluewater cruising from Vancouver to Australia, we asked as many people as we could about what we should be looking for in a good ocean-going boat. As we looked around for a suitable sailboat we were dismayed to find that very few had all the characteristics we were recommended and almost none in our price range . The ones that did felt so old and clunky that we couldn’t imagine enjoying sailing them. As one enthusiastic seller said to us, “Takes her 20 knots of wind to start moving, but when she does, she’s a freight-train.” See this post for the best places to find bluewater boats for sale.

A MATTER OF COMPROMISE

We began to ask questions, “Do we really need a full keel?” “Can we get by with a spade rudder?”  In the end we compromised. We went with a boat that met some of the requirements, but not all.

We settled on a Dufour 35, built in 1979. It had a solid fibreglass hull and skeg-hung rudder, but was billed as a racer-cruiser when it came off the assembly line. As such, the tankage was minimal, she doesn’t have a fin keel and isn’t a cutter. She also has a balsa-core deck to save on weight. We were emboldened by the report that many others had sailed around the world in this model of boat and she did appear in John Neal’s list of acceptable offshore boats, although without glowing remarks.

THE SURPRISING RESULTS

We were never fully confident in our little Dufour as an offshore sailer until we got to the Marquesas. It wasn’t only that she got us there in one piece, but more that upon arriving we saw boats of all ranges and shapes . We saw new Beneteaus and Jeaneaus and even Hunters; all light displacement, fin keel, spade rudder, no bilge, fractional rigged sloops. “What’s going on?” I asked myself, “How did all these non-offshore boats get here?”

BY THE NUMBERS – A SURVEY OF 56 BOATS THAT CROSSED THE PACIFIC IN 2016-2017

Intrigued by this surprising revelation I decided to learn more about what kind of boats cross the ocean. I gathered data from 56 boats that crossed the Pacific between 2016-2017 and researched their features to see how many checked the boxes on the bluewater list. The results called into question the traditional definition of a bluewater sailboat and reflect advances in weather forecasting and navigation. A full list of the boats is provided below.

ONLY 16% of BOATS MET ALL THE CRITERIA FOR A BLUEWATER BOAT

blue water boats

Of the 56 boats examined in this study 9 (16%) met all the above criteria for a bluewater cruiser. On average the boats met less than half (41%) of the criteria. The two most often met criteria were large storage capacity and heavy displacement, which are usually linked.  Cutter rigs were popular designs, while ketches were few and far between.  A full discussion of each feature is included below.

The most common rig type turned out to be a cutter rig (40%) , followed by fractional sloop rigs (27%) and closely thereafter by masthead sloops (26%).  The more modern designed, light-displacement boats usually feature fractional rigs.  Ketches (7%) filled out the rest of the fleet.

bluewater sailboats

Cutter rigs

The main advantage of a cutter rig is the ability to fly a stay sail or storm jib from the inner forestay, which provides more options for both light wind and heavy weather.  Keeping the centre of effort close to the centre of the boat is more efficient and more comfortable in heavy weather. The secondary advantage of a cutter is having a backup forestay already installed should the main forestay fail.   Owners of masthead sloops often install Solent stays to provide some of the same benefits of a cutter.  We did this, but in the end it only gets in the way and we never use it.

Fractional sloop rigs vs. Masthead Sloops

The main advantage of a fractional sloop is easier sailing handling. The jib is smaller on a fractional rig than a masthead rig and makes gybing and tacking easier . Also the spinnakers tend to be smaller on fractional rigs and easier to fly for most cruising couples or shorthanded crews. As wind speeds pick up the main is reefed while the can jib remain full up to certain wind speeds. This makes reefing easier and improves efficiency as reefed headsails have notoriously poor shape and move away from the centre of effort as they are reefed.

keel types

For the purposes of my survey, keel shapes weren’t defined beyond long keel or fin keel . I grouped cutaway forefoot and full keels under long keels, and winged keels or bulbed keels under fin keels. Only a quarter of the boats had long keels.   As seen with the fractional rigs, modern designs overwhelmingly use a fin keel to provide lateral resistance.  Over 13% of the boats were catamarans and don’t really fit into either category.

bluewater sailboats

A long keel has many advantages and many detractors.

  • A full keel is usually encapsulated in the hull, making the connection stronger than a bolted-on, fin keel.
  • A long keel boat is easier to make heave-to as it doesn’t pivot on the keel the way a fin keel does.
  • Also, a full-keeled boat tracks better, especially going downwind in large seas, preventing the roundups on waves that are associated with many fin keel designs, ours included.
  • The main detractor of a long keel is that it is much less efficient than a fin keel , which means significantly reduced boat speed.
  • It also makes tacking or gybing more difficult and sometimes impossible in light air with a full keel.
  • The same problem extends to motoring around the marina or anchorage, where the long keel makes quick and tight turns unfeasible.

rudder types

A slight majority of boats have spade rudders (52%) .  The rest have skeg-hung (27%) or attached (21%) rudders.

bluewater boats

In 2017, of the boats in this study, five developed rudder issues during the crossing.  Two spade rudders delaminated and one seized, while the two skeg-hung rudders developed leaks around the rudder posts.  Most of the boats with spade rudders I talked to did not strengthen their rudder posts, but left the factory post in place.

Skeg-hung and keel-attached rudders

Skeg-hung and attached rudders have an obvious advantage in that they are protected from direct impact. The pressure on the leading edge of the rudder is also greatly reduced, putting less strain on the rudder post.  An added advantage is that fishing lines and other marine debris can’t get caught in between the rudder and the hull. As with a full keel the main detractor is diminished sailing performance.

Spade rudders

A spade rudder acts like a wing under water. It’s ability to cant with the turn, and fine leading edge make it much more efficient than a skeg-hung rudder. The rudder design makes the boat more responsive to changes in course as well as enhancing overall speed.

DISPLACEMENT

The definition of heavy displacement is anything with a Displacement/Length Ratio (DLR) of 270 – 360.  Moderate displacement is anything between 180-270 and light displacement is any DLR under 180.  Roughly 51% of the boats that crossed could be considered heavy displacement.   The rest mirror the rig types, with 27% falling into the light displacement category and 22% under the moderate displacement label.

bluewater yachting

A heavier boat will be more comfortable in heavy weather and is usually more robust all around.  One of the Dufour 35s (moderate to heavy displacement) that crossed in 2017 had just completed the Northwest Passage where they collided with an iceberg at 7 knots and suffered absolutely no damage. Similarly a CT 41 (heavy displacement) this year hit a coral head at 6 knots and received minimal fibreglass damage at the front of the keel.

But heavy also means slow, especially in light air.   A fast boat can sail through conditions in which a heavier design would languish or be forced to motor.  It can also move more quickly and often avoid weather systems .  While you might not want to get caught in a storm in a light displacement boat, the view is you might not have to.

REPUTABLE OFFSHORE BUILDER

Defining a boatyard as a reputable offshore boatyard is a dangerous and ultimately futile exercise.  Beneteaus, Jeanneaus and Lagoons make up 20% of the boats in the survey group.  They are reputable production boats, but are not known for making offshore boats.  The rest make up the gamut of other builders, including: Deerfoot, Dufour, Fontaine Pajot, Hans Christian, Hunter, Island Packet, Lapworth, Morgan, Ovni, Pacific Seacraft, Tartan, Valiant , etc.  Some are known as offshore builders, while others are not.  Only 33% are on John Neal’s list of recommended cruising boats.

LARGE STORAGE CAPACITY

This is one criterion that seems to be consistent across the board. 71% of the boats were listed as having relatively large, factory built, water and fuel storage capacity .  Boats that don’t have factory-built large tankage are often augmented for long distance cruising.  Our own Dufour has had a diesel tank added and two water tanks to make it more comfortable on long passages as well as extra cabinetry installed.  Friends of ours on a newer Dufour make up the difference with umpteen jerry jugs to hold diesel and water.

SO, WHY ARE ALL THESE NON-BLUEWATER BOATS ABLE TO CROSS AN OCEAN?

The list of boats that successfully made it across the Pacific in the last couple of years does challenge the traditionalist perspective about essential offshore elements.  What explains the difference between what we think should be able to cross an ocean and what is actually crossing?  The most likely explanations are: weather forecasting and preventative maintenance.

WEATHER FORECASTING AND GPS

The difference might be explained by technological advances, specifically access to better weather forecasting and the advent of GPS.   These combined mean that, for the most part, heavy weather and rough seas can be avoided, especially big lower pressure systems . It is rare for a boat that has access to daily weather forecasts to get caught by a large storm. For heavy weather avoidance, the big slow boats are at a disadvantage because they can’t use light winds to sail through large areas and might not be able to move fast enough to avoid an approaching system. The longer a passage takes, the more exposed the boat and crew are to inclement weather.

Based on data gathered from over 150 boats that crossed the Pacific in the last 6 years (2012-2017), the average maximum reported windspeed was 32 knots , with 82% of boats reporting maximum windspeeds below 40 knots.  The high windspeeds were almost always due to squalls around the equator and lasted less than 40 minutes.  Almost any ocean-going sailboat can handle this windspeed and the accompanying sea state.

PREVENTATIVE MAINTENANCE AND SPARES

So many of the problems associated with any boat can be avoided through regular maintenance and checkups. Small issues can often be easily managed with the right spares and tools before they become larger catastrophic problems. this rule applies to all boats whether they are going offshore or not.

Of the 150+ boats that crossed in the last 6 years, only 16 reported no significant breakages during the crossing and the overwhelming reason touted by these sailors was preventative maintenance. The rest who had significant gear failures were almost always able to manage a repair at sea with the right spares and tools onboard.  Only a few required being towed into port and none were abandoned.

SO, WHAT EXACTLY MAKES A BLUEWATER BOAT?

You do. It is neither my intention to end the bluewater boat debate, not to recommend one style over another. Windspeed and sea state are not the only factors to consider when offshore cruising. There are also fishing lines and nets, coral heads and other obstructions, constant wear and tear on gear, comfort below decks, galley design, sea berths, and many other factors. Picking the right boat for offshore cruising is a personal experience. The most important thing is that you know the boat and feel comfortable sailing her in a variety of conditions.

Missing on the list but in the top 10: Hallberg Rassy and Rustler.

Very nice and thorough article.

I think where sailors get hung up is the difference between the words 'best' and 'capable'. Everyone wants 'best'. But how many can afford it??

I was once told our 28' Hunter wasn't 'capable' of going to the Bahamas. That is not true, it is very 'capable' of traveling from southern Florida to the Bahamas. Is it 'capable' to live on, have enough water, etc for a long stay while there?? Probably not. At least, I wouldn't want to do it. But I would do a week trip if I had the time and weather window available.

A boat is 'capable' depending on the needs and abilities of the sailors crewing and the adventure planned for her. I wouldn't dream of crossing the Atlantic on her.

But I know of a few captains that would enjoy the challenge!

Thanks for providing such a detailed discussion.

Yachting industry interview: hp watermakers co-founder gianni zucco.

Gianni Zucco in HP Watermaker facility in Milan

One of the many perks of my job as a yachting journalist is that I get to meet a wide variety of people that share a passion for yachts of all shapes and sizes. And while the high-profile owners, designers and builders of the world’s largest yachts I write about usually get all the attention. My chats with the amazing, and entrepreneurial artisans and craftspeople like HP Watermakers Co-Founder Gianni Zucco are some of my favorites.

I first heard about Gianni in a press release announcing his company’s work aboard the 177-foot-long Al Waab that was designed by Vripack in The Netherlands, built in Turkey by Alia Yachts and…fitted out with a state-of-the-art water desalination system!

HP Watermakers were installed on the 177-foot-long Al Waab built by Alia Yachts

“Such a special and innovative yacht deserved an equally cutting-edge series of filtration systems, starting from desalination and up to distribution at the point of delivery,” Zucco, says like an engineer. “This is why HP Watermakers’ set-up for Al Waab has been studied particularly carefully, developing an exclusive project based on a system that is without doubt redundant, but also emergency-proof precisely because it is redundant. Our system provides double desalination, double sterilization and remineralization of the produced water. In addition, the softening system for water provided by the marina means being able to have water that is always free from limescale.”

HP Watermakers are state-of-the-art

Fortnite Servers Are Down Here s When Chapter 5 Season 3 Begins Updated

Ethereum etfs approved: insights into the sec’s decision, trump will announce vp pick at july rnc he s already name dropped these 4.

Now, I get lots of product-specific press releases that aren’t too exciting. But then I met Gianni in person at a recent boatshow and was drawn into the passion he has for his family’s business building watermakers.

Gianni Zucco (right) and his family in their production facility in Milan

“My family started building parts for all the watermaker companies when I was a child,” he says about how HP Watermakers began in Milan. “When I grew up, I wanted to join the family business. And then we recognized that we could put together our parts in a different way. We could build our own watermakers. We knew we could make them smaller and lighter and make them completely automatic. And we knew we could build them better.”

And the rest they say is history. HP watermakers’ has a well-earned reputation for building high-quality, automatic watermakers as well as for providing service in 56 countries including offices in Dubai, Fort Lauderdale, Cape Town, and Madrid.

But it was the pride and passion I could see in Gianni’s eyes, and the way he described the location of where HP Watermakers are built that really made an impression on me.

HP Watermakers are designed and made with pride in Milan

“We build all our products in our 3,000 square meter facility in Milan,” he said. In fact, seeing him describe his family’s precision manufacturing business with such passion reminded me of a well-known Italian builder from Modena.

Now, I’m not sure if I can say Gianni Zucco is the Enzo Ferrari of watermakers. But I will say, HP Watermakers are world class. And it’s no accident that every unit his company builds is shipped with a “Made in Milan” label. He believes HP Watermakers are more than just machines. They’ve elevated the form and function of water desalination and filtration to a whole other level.

Jo English was a sailor, a sea swimmer, a professional caterer and amazing cook, a mother of two and an optimistic, enthusiastic person who made friends wherever she went.

She co-managed SailCork, the sailing school based in Cobh, County Cork, with her husband Eddie until shortly before her death at age 59.

“For almost 20 years the couple also ran SailCork’s “sunshine yachting holidays”, bringing groups on chartered boats in the Mediterranean and Caribbean seas. She became adept at cooking exceptional meals in the galleys of boats, shopping for fresh supplies at local markets and booking evening meals in the best restaurants along their routes. Antigua, the British Virgin Islands, Grenada and the Grenadines were her favourite destinations.

“I did the teaching and Jo did the catering. We enjoyed it and made great friends with people who came on the boats,” said Eddie English.

Jo English's favourite destinations were Antigua, the British Virgin Islands, Grenada and the Grenadines

Although her original training was in catering, Jo brought her excellent administration and business management skills to running the sailing school with her husband, who set up SailCork in 1974 and remains the head instructor.

“She did the work of two people. We are in the dark without her,” Eddie added.

The couple met through mutual friends at a party in January 2001 and married within the year. Two years later, she gave up her job in Brennan’s catering emporium in Cork City to join Eddie at the helm of SailCork, which offers courses in yachting, dinghy sailing and powerboating in Cork Harbour and on the south coast of Ireland.

A fast learner, she first completed all the sailing courses the business offered – often with Eddie as the instructor – and also took over a lot of the administration, dividing her time between the business and rearing of their two children, Aisling (20) and Eamonn (18).

The family home on East Hill in Cobh – overlooking Cork Harbour – was an open house, with friends and international sailing instructors regularly enjoying Jo’s hospitality and delicious home cooking.

Royal Cork Yacht Club admiral Annamarie Fegan, former minister for the marine Simon Coveney and former Water Safety Ireland CEO John Leech were among the many people who paid tribute following her death. SailCork said she was a strength and inspiration to a generation of sailors and power-boaters and to a large team of instructors.

The eldest of seven children of Noreen and Connie O’Connor, Jo grew up on a farm in Fairyhill near Kanturk, Co Cork. After her secondary school education in Scoil Mhuire in Kanturk, she studied hotel and catering management at Galway Institute of Technology from 1983-1986. Soon after graduating she moved to work in hotels in San Francisco for two years, staying with her brother, Donal, who was already based there.

Back in Ireland, she worked in the Blarney Park Hotel. In the mid-1990s, she opened her own cafe and deli, The Bluebell Nook, in Mallow. Her sister, Trish Gallagher, who worked with her in the cafe for a time, said Jo had a great relationship with her regular customers.

“The cafe was renowned for its freshly filled doorstop sandwiches. She always knew what her customers would have and people remember those days very fondly,” said Trish.

Adventure beckoned and in the late 1990s, she set off on her travels again – this time across Europe and on to Thailand. Upon her return, she worked for a time in catering department of the Mercy Hospital in Cork and then as a manager in Brennan’s catering emporium in the city.

She later became a daily sea swimmer at Cuskinny Bay in Cork Harbour. The group of women in their 50s became known as the Cuskinny Open Water Swimmers or COWS for short. Family holidays were spent cruising on boats with friends on the south coast of Ireland or off the coast of Spain.

Although her life revolved around sailing and family life, Jo remained very close to her siblings and parents, often hosting gatherings in Cobh where everyone could meet up.

“She was always looking out for us all and put everyone else first,” Trish added.

At his wife’s funeral, Eddie said: “Some people tell me I’m unlucky – but I consider myself very lucky. I’ve had the most wonderful 22 years with my best friend, my lover, my wife and my business partner. She was absolutely everything to me.”

Jo English is survived by her husband Eddie, their children Aisling and Eamonn, her mother Noreen, her siblings Donal, Niall, Bernard, Trish and Kevin. Her father Connie and her brother Dominic predeceased her.

Killer whales are ramming into boats and damaging them. The reason remains a mystery.

By Caitlin O'Kane

May 25, 2023 / 2:27 PM EDT / CBS News

Reports of killer whales appearing to try and capsize boats off the coast of Spain and Portugal have raised questions about the giant sea creatures and the motive behind their erratic actions. The behavior is unusual, and began in 2020, says Andrew W. Trites, professor and director of Marine Mammal Research at the University of British Columbia.

In the past two years, these incidents have more than tripled according to data released by GTOA , a group that researches orcas in the region.

"Nobody knows why this is happening," Trites told CBS News. "My idea, or what anyone would give you, is informed speculation. It is a total mystery, unprecedented."

Trites said there is no doubt whales are damaging boats and terrifying the people on board, but the reason is a mystery. He said, however, there must be something positively reinforcing this behavior and the benefits for the whales outweigh the cost.

Only a small group of killer whales, also called orcas, is showing the behavior of ramming into boats, including yachts and sailboats, and it appears the action is spreading through their population. Trites said in 2011, there were only about 39 whales in the small group.

The whales are seen near Spain and Portugal, often in the summer, and dozens of people have reportedly witnessed this behavior.

Last week, a group of killer whales broke the rudder and pierced the hull of a sailboat in the area. The crew of four onboard needed to call authorities for help and we were rescued,  Reuters reports . Their boat was towed back to the port for repairs. Earlier this month, three orcas impacted a sailing yacht. The boat was so flooded after the incident that it could not be towed back.

This is just one of about 20 instances  recorded in the area this month by GTOA , a group that researches orcas in the region. The Spanish Transport Ministry has advised boaters should leave the area if they observe a change in an orca's direction or speed and should report any interactions, according to Reuters.

GTOA says 52 interactions were recorded between the Strait of Gibraltar and Galicia in northern Spain between July and November 2020. The following year saw 197 interactions and in 2022, there were 207 interactions. The incidents primarily affect sailboats, GTOA says.

A study on the disruptive behavior of killer whales was published in 2022. Alfredo López Fernandez, co-author of the study,  told Live Science  said most of the interactions have been harmless, but at least three ships have sunk since the behavior started in 2020.

López Fernandez, a biologist at the University of Aveiro in Portugal, who also works at GTOA, told Live Science the origin of this behavior is unknown. And while there are some reports speculating orcas are teaching each other, he says the behavior may just be spreading to young orcas because they are imitating older orcas.

Trites doesn't think the incidents are attacks, and while some speculate the whales may be "retaliating," he doesn't believe that theory. "I read that something triggered one of the adult females and she is exacting revenge and teaching the others to do that too by ramming vessels and trying to intentionally sink them," he said. "To ram a vessel makes as much sense as me running full speed into a brick wall. You're going to get injured."

He said he doesn't believe this idea, or the theory that whales are mad that there are too many boats in the ocean. His theory? "I think it's just playful behavior that's gotten way out of hand," he said.

Trites said whales do not eat humans and there are no reports of them attacking any humans. However, this behavior change in the whales is dangerous and could result in a boater being killed.

He said the behavior reminds him of a whale named Luca, spotted off the coast of Vancouver, who separated from his pod and began to follow boats. "He later learned to grab onto the rudders to break them off to disable the boats, to push boats around," Trites said. "In his case, he was seeking social interactions. And he learned he could prolong the interactions by disabling the boats. And then they would have to stay with him."

Trites said killer whales are social, tactile animals. Some like to rub their bodies together while swimming together or ride the wake of boats and feel the sensation of the water pushing them. "I know of many cases where killer whales will come in and almost put their nose up to a propeller of the boat and feel the wash of the water go over them. It'd be like being in a jacuzzi," he said.

Trites said some of the reports from Spain and Portugal are consistent with this behavior – whales putting their noses up to the back of the boat.

"It's a bit hard to know what to make of the accounts because if a researcher who understands killer whale behavior was on board, they may describe it in a different way," he said, adding that while some boaters may feel attacked, a researcher might characterize it as a whale simply rubbing against a boat.

"The positive in here could be from roughhousing with something else – they certainly rough house among themselves – tactile, touching – we know killer whales rake their teeth over the body of another whale – all of this could be behaviors they are turning toward some boat and finding they are getting pleasure out of doing that."
