Absolute Yachts 48 Coupe Review

Absolute Yachts has spent the past several years focused on its Flybridge and Navetta ranges, but the Italian company started out building sports cruisers. With its 48 Coupe, Absolute comes full circle. This yacht is based on the builder’s 47 Fly platform, and it offers something a little different.

Instead of a conventional transom of opaque composites and perhaps a built-in sofa or sun pad, the 48 Coupe’s aft deck comes bare. There is tinted glass, stainless-steel railing aft for safety, and just one transom gate to starboard. All 102 square feet of “cockpit terrace” is essentially open to owner interpretation, and Absolute offers a range of modular deck furniture for the purpose. (Teak decking is one of the bigger options.)

Like the rest of this Absolute range, this latest model is more stocky than sporty—and that’s a good thing. Long, low and pointy is OK for speed, but not always for comfort. Absolute’s team believes that today’s tastes have moved on to comfortable cruising and quality time aboard.

Note that there’s no sunroof option with this model, principally because Absolute has started to embrace solar technology. The coach roof can carry up to 2.5 kilowatts’ worth of solar cells, part of which are inset into a thermally reflective glass panel that delivers light, but not heat, to the salon below. Half that kilowatt capacity comes standard. The other half is optional. With the full solar set, there should be enough power on a sunny day to run all the usual daytime utilities, save for the air-conditioning system, which needs either the main engines or generator. Then again, there is plenty of fresh air when all the doors are open and the picture windows on each side are lowered halfway down.

Absolute is keeping this model as simple as possible from a production standpoint. The contemporary interior layout and most of the decor are fixed. There’s a choice of aft-deck doors; the 48 Coupe I got aboard had the optional triple-section set that opens extra-wide. The main salon is laid out with an aft galley on the same level as the aft deck. Up a step are a lounge and booth-dining area amidships. The single helm seat and bridge are forward. The salon’s sole is a stained oak that’s optional in the staterooms. There’s 7 feet of headroom in the galley and at least 6 feet, 3 inches up by the prime seats.

Accommodations on the lower deck are three staterooms. There is a forepeak master, a location that makes for quiet should owners want to moor stern-to at the marina. The amount of space beneath the foredeck is pretty good because the bow sections are fairly full. The berth is set on a diagonal. There’s a closet to port, and the en suite shower is to starboard. Absolute makes use of sliding, or “pocket,” doors to conserve space.

The yacht’s two other staterooms are amidships. The one to port is a forward-facing, double-berth affair with a vanity desk or a washer/dryer cupboard, as well as a closet inboard that runs across the rest of the beam to starboard. A twin-berth stateroom is forward of that closet to starboard. Both guest staterooms share the portside shower, which doubles as a day head.

All of Absolute’s models have Volvo Penta IPS diesels. The 48 Coupe comes with twin 480 hp D6 diesels and IPS650 pod drives. Expect about a 28-knot top-end speed at 3,800 rpm, depending on load. This model will be most efficient skipping along at around 25 knots and 3,500 rpm, at which the fuel burn is around 1.6 gallons per mile. Given the fuel capacity of 423 gallons, that’s 10 hours’ worth of cruising time. At 20 knots, the motors will burn around 34 gallons per hour, providing a theoretical range of around 224 nautical miles with a 10 percent reserve. At 10 knots, the range would push out by another 40 nm or so, and at 8 knots, owners could conceivably run for around 500 nm.

Ergonomics at the helm are good whether the skipper is seated or perched on the bolster. Unusual for a boat this size, there’s full standing headroom at the wheel, as well as a side-deck door. Thanks to all that glass—and the absence of a tall fridge/freezer in the galley—the views from the wheel are virtually 360 degrees.

I ran Hull No. 1 off Varazze, Italy, which lies 20 miles west of Genoa. It’s a confidence-inspiring, stable yacht to pilot. To turn more sharply, disengage the coordinated turn function in Volvo Penta’s Active Ride Control system. Doing so will automatically limit any leaning through turns.

Absolute’s return to its roots seems to be successful. The 48 Coupe offers the comfort and luxury of the Flybridge and Navetta lines, but with a look and feel that sports-cruiser enthusiasts can embrace.

Docking Help

The first 48 Coupe has Volvo Penta’s Assisted Docking system. The IPS joystick not only vectors thrusts from the pods and a Sleipner proportional bow thruster, but it also references those with dynamic-positioning capability. The boat can go just about anywhere, including perfectly sideways. When I took my hand off the joystick, the boat held the same position and attitude—a great comfort to even the most experienced captains.

Safe and Secure

Raymarine’s DockSense technology helps prevent collisions by overriding steering and throttle commands. The system has three camera boxes, one on each side and one aft-facing. Their views appear together on one of the helm’s monitors, with a schematic radar view that references the gaps between the boat and any surface objects. Green, amber and red colors combined with audible beeps warn the skipper as the gaps narrow.

Well, the Absolute 48 Coupé produces her own clean energy thanks to a “ set of solar panels integrated into the roof “. And the “absolute horizon” concept returns, because one of the solar panels is transparent and specially “ designed to allow pleasant natural lighting without heating the surrounding space” . As a result, range is guaranteed on board the Absolute 48 when at anchor.

That’s right: there’s something wonderful on board the Absolute 48. Even at the stern , the view is not at all obstructed and the panoramic windscreen, again, expresses that absolute horizon. If we then think about how to protect ourselves or open up more to the weather, the interior of the saloon knows how to breathe thanks to the windows which “ can be opened electrically to channel the sea breeze and generate air circulation”.

The cockpit , too, is unobstructed to the eye and its ease further invites the joie de vivre that is sought at sea. The stern railings are glazed and they too insist on an impetus of continuity devoted to the connection with the sea. Absolute 48 Coupé Review: Absolutely Amazing

Unquestionable Absolute DNA has been transformed, thanks to sporty lines, modern aft, with several technical innovations and a high finishing level, into an absolutely fantastic ‘pocket’ yacht, Absolute 48 Coupé

When the successful family-owned company Absolute Yachts, today known for the Navetta and Fly models, starts producing a completely new line, we can safely assume they have left nothing to chance. It is thus not surprising that they created an innovative product to win over new clientele: the fresh and delightful Absolute Coupé 48, already European Powerboat of the Year 2022.

Innovative motor yacht from Absolute

On this model the undeniably Absolute DNA has been transformed thanks to sporty lines and a modern aft, with several technical innovations up its sleeve into an absolutely fantastic ‘pocket’ yacht. So don’t be fooled by the Coupé designation, as the clever use of interior volumes provides a good base for a variety of uses, both on short excursions and on longer voyages. One of the main features of the Absolute 48 Coupé are integrated solar panels on the top deck, amounting up to 2.5 kWp.

Absolute Horizon

They only charge batteries, admittedly, but at anchor they make sure you have peace and quiet (and functioning fridges), and do not pollute the environment with emissions, vibrations and noise as generators do. This yacht toes the segment of environmentally oriented yachts, and more green solutions from Absolute can be expected in the future, such as the installation of hybrid Volvo Penta drives. The hull looks like the hull of Absolute 47, with identical window panes, and the new model is even powered by the same Volvo IPS650 engines, but as every product line gets new moulds, so did this one.

The aft of the new model, dubbed Absolute Horizon, is different, and allows the Coupé to transform into a fresh, interesting yacht that offers something no other model in its segment does. With such an aft, the absence of a fly deck is not felt at all, and the cockpit can be connected to the surroundings in a zilch, simply by lowering the large glass panels dividing it from the interior.

Only one layout is available with three cabins and two bathrooms and it is identical to that of the 47 Fly, but on this model it has been elevated. The galley is a bit shorter, but the salon is still generous in size, with two sofas and a free-standing table. All cabins are flooded with natural light thanks to the massive windows, and the interior has a calm vibe based on light oak and dark, shiny decorative elements, soft rounded corners, fine fabrics and quilted leather, all very elegant and measured.

The great width of the hull even at the bow, as well as the presence of the cockpit sliding doors make it possible the owner cabin to rise to a majestic size, with a sloping bed, a small table, hanging cabinets and an en-suite bathroom. Standing height is the same in all cabins and bathrooms, and the VIP cabin as wide as the hull, with a walk-in closet and a shared bathroom (with the double guest cabin).

Exterior areas on the bow, with large sunshades, and aft, more than make up for the lack of the fly deck, especially when the furniture is moved aside and the aft turns into an entertainment are with no barriers between guests and the marine environment. Despite the high bow – accessible by two steps – the skipper enjoys excellent visibility. Functional house-style doors, not very common on yachts of this length, are a delight to see and provide plently opportunities for letting in some fresh air.

For those taller than 180cm/6 ft., the footrest under the steering wheel will be set too high, but the skipper’s seat so comfortable. The new Volvo Assist system makes steering so easy it’s a bit boring, and the Raymarine radar gives extra safety in sailing and performing manoeuvres. All levers and the joystick are perfectly positioned, and the DPS (Dynamic Positioning System) keeps the 48 Coupé in place with just one press of button and the motor and thruster do the magic.

Absolute 48 Coupé fuel consumption

Assistant docking allows the yacht to move wherever and however the skipper wants, but as soon as it stops, the DPS takes over. Two Raymarine screens and a 9-inch Volvo screen provide plenty of information and allow for easy use of all systems. With more than half a tank of fuel, we set off at 1,200 rpm and at 7 knots of speed, reaching planning speed in less than 10 seconds, with 2,600 rpm and 13 smooth knots. At 10 knots, we recorded mere 5 l/nm fuel consumption.

The noise stayed under 75 dB all the time, and the Coupé was an absolute pleasure at about 20 knots (3200 rpm), not only because of the silence that surrounded us, but because it remained perfectly balanced and stable in all manoeuvres. We did find th steering angle a bit to narrow, resulting in wide turns, but although this can be easily corrected, we decided there was no need for it.

Absolute 48 Coupé range

Merely out of curiosity, we set off at full throttle and reached more than 25 knots in 20 seconds, slightly less than the maximum declared speed of 28 knots. This Coupé is an absolutely fantastic choice for all those who want a balanced product , equally interesting for comfort, performance and consumption – especially with current fuel prices – and who will appreciate easy cruising at about 12 knots over 700 miles of absolute horizon.

The generous high-low swim platform is the perfect base camp for swimmers and sea bathers. Forward, you’ll find the sociable, open cockpit. This space is totally open to the water, protected by a glazed transom balustrade turns the cockpit into a relaxed but deeply chic sea terrace. Walkaround decks with stainless-steel rails provide safety and free movement. Two freestanding sofas provide ample space for lounging and taking in the stunning uninterrupted views, while a table offers real estate for tapas and cocktails. The modular furniture aboard this yacht can be arranged in countless ways according to the owner’s needs. A retractable sunshade extends from the hardtop when shade is desired. Thought and care has been put into the foredeck, which is a special place in its own right. A large sunpad with three reclining backrests sits beneath a detachable awning.

The light, airy salon is entered through a minimalist three-paneled sliding glass door. Once inside, you’ll encounter the superb aft galley and begin to appreciate just how fine the glazing work on this yacht is. Large side windows electronically open, inviting in the sea breeze, while the full-width windscreen and salon doors exude a contemporary but meditative and open atmosphere, full of natural light and contact with the elements. The aft galley is sociable, perfectly situated between the cockpit and forward living area, and well-equipped: a refrigerator, icemaker, two-burner stovetop, and plenty of storage and counter space.

The forward lounge area raised up a step, making it feel like a distinct space, yet still open to the cockpit. A large wraparound sofa nestles against a dining table, while a facing sofa provides further seating. The forward starboard helm features a single leather seat with two Raymarine displays, a joystick, steering wheel, throttler, and other tools.

This yacht features a set of solar panels integrated into the roof. One panel is transparent, allowing in soft natural light while absorbing heat, keeping conditions cool inside. These panels generate their own clean energy, too: the 48 Coupé is almost self-sufficient, even at anchor.

Below deck, you’ll find three substantial staterooms. The forward owner’s suite is, naturally, the most spacious cabin on this yacht. The platform bed is situated between two large side windows, giving it the look and feel of a penthouse suite. The private en suite bathroom is genuinely luxurious, with a fully-enclosed walk-in shower and a built-in bathroom unit with shelves and cabinets. The VIP suite is nearly identical to the master, but slightly scaled down, with a vanity table and walk-in wardrobe. A mirror behind the bed enhances the already generous natural light from the side windows. Even the third cabin isn’t neglected, with two separate single beds and a generous side window. The VIP and third cabin share access to the day head.

Twin 480hp Volvo Penta D6-IPS650 engines provide responsive and smooth handling, reaching 28.5 knots max with a cruising speed of 14 knots. A Volvo docking system and Raymarine Docksense ensure maneuverability in tight positions.
