Perched on top of a cliff overlooking the Mediterranean Sea is the small city of Sidi Bou Said in Tunisia – a beautiful place full of picturesque blue and white buildings that is often compared to the more famous Chefchaouen in Morocco or Santorini in Greece.

There are lots of cute rooftop cafes along Rue Habib Thameur such as Dar Dallaji where you can look down onto the white and blue buildings below.

Cafe Des Nattes, on Rue Hedi Zarrouk, also offers panoramic views of the Mediterranean Sea and the surrounding landscape.

The best place however to come for a tea and watch the sunset over the harbour is the iconic Cafe des Delices. Here is the Google maps location . If there’s only one cafe you visit when in Sidi Bou Said, it has to be this iconic one.

How To Get To Sidi Bou Said From Tunis

Sidi Bou Said is located 18km north of Tunis, and it is very easy to get there on public transport. You can easily visit it on a day trip or half day excursion.

Take the TGM light rail to Sidi Bou Said from Tunis Marine Station, located at the end of Habib Bourguiba. Don’t go to the Gare de Tunis station. The train is very affordable – a single ticket costs 0.7 dinar and the journey from Tunis to Sidi Bou Said takes 35 minutes.

sidi bou said Tunisia photography

Other Places To Visit Near Sidi Bou Said

Besides Tunis, there are a couple of other places nearby to Sidi Bou Said that are really worth exploring:

Carthage is a stunning town 3km from Sidi Bou Said and you can easily visit the two sights in one day. There are so many archaeological sights and things to see in Carthage , such as the ancient Roman amphitheatre ruins and Roman baths.

It takes 10 minutes to get to Carthage on the train from Sidi Bou Said. It’s on the same train line that goes back to Tunis – the TGM light rail, making it easy to combine them in a day trip.

Carthage is closer to Tunis than Sidi Bou Said, so most people like to visit Carthage in the morning, then enjoy Sidi Bou Said for lunch and the afternoon and stay for the sunset.

Carthage Tunisia photography

Both towns are so picturesque yet so different and I really recommend to visit both when you’re in Tunisia!

Located just past Sidi Bou Said is La Marsa – the fancy part of Tunisia. Lots of expats live here and you’ll find lots of bars that serve alcohol. Perfect for a night out if you still have the energy after your day of sightseeing!

As a result it is vary crowded marina. It is highly advisable to make advance reservations. For address and telephones see below .

The marina is a very convenient place to leave a boat with good proximity to Tunis but, first you must go to the TGM (local train for Tunis) station which was is 365 steps up the hill.

It is highly recommendable to walk (or drive) up the hill and visit the picturesque settlement of Sidi Bou Said itself!

Communication

Hailing the marina the VHF channels 09 and 16 does not always produce a response.

Warning: One difficulty with the approaching to the marina is its entrance. It gets silted and has to be dredged. You may have to wait for a dredge before entering or once inside you may be trapped until the entrance is cleared again.

Situation June 2018

The entrance is silted at the south (green light). Entry & exit were no problem (draugh 1.7m) by sticking to the northern part of the entry (red light). Depth according to sonar was not below 3m.

Whether they had responded to your hail, after you do enter the marina an attendant will direct you to a berth.

  • Mini-market
  • Nearby restaurants

There is a 15 ton travel-lift for haul-out and the marina can do minor repairs.

There are guards.

The village is is 365 steps up the hill, about a 15 minute walk. At the village you can take the TGM local train for Tunis.

Transportation

  • Good road to Tunis
  • The Tunis-Carthage airport, with flights to France and other EU coutries, is 15 km away
  • There are regular trains from the village of Sidi Bou Saïd to Carthage and Tunis

Water and electricity are obligatory to pay. For the author it was possible to negotiate dropping one of the two. But no weekly or monthly prices could be arranged.

Personal experience

  • The water in this highly priced marina is dirty -- Istioploos 18:21, 7 December 2008 (UTC)
  • I posted a price list for 2018 (see above). The marina was not dirty, but sometimes the water was (depending on wind pushing together the swimming dirt). Nevertheless, the facilities are... poor, to say the least. -- User:Strich 15:11, 8 June 2018 (UTC)

Sidi Bou Said, Tunisia: The Complete Guide

Where to Stay

Where to eat, getting there, sidi bou said.

Approximately 12 miles (20 kilometers) north of Tunis lies the idyllic seaside town of Sidi Bou Said. Perched on top of a steep cliff and surrounded by breathtaking Mediterranean views, it's the perfect antidote to the hustle and bustle of the Tunisian capital and a favored getaway destination for locals and visitors alike. The town's cobbled streets are lined with art shops, souvenir stalls, and quaint cafés. Brilliant blue-painted doors and trellises contrast beautifully with the pure white of Sidi Bou Said's Grecian buildings, and the air is scented with trailing bougainvillea.

The town is named after Abu Said Ibn Khalef Ibn Yahia El-Beji, a Muslim saint who spent much of his life studying and teaching at the Zitouna Mosque in Tunis. After journeying through the Middle East on a pilgrimage to Mecca, he came home and sought the peace and quiet of a small village on the outskirts of Tunis named Jebel El-Manar. The village's name meant "The Fire Mountain" and referred to the beacon that was lit up on the cliff in ancient times to guide ships navigating their way through the Gulf of Tunis. Abu Said spent the rest of his life meditating and praying in Jebel El-Manar, until his death in 1231.

His tomb became a pilgrimage site for devout Muslims, and over time, a town grew up around it. Eventually, it was named in his honor - Sidi Bou Said.

It wasn't until the early 1920s that the town adopted its striking blue and white color scheme, however. It was inspired by the palace of Baron Rodolphe d'Erlanger, a famous French painter, and musicologist known for his work in promoting Arab music, who lived in Sid Bou Said from 1909 until his death in 1932. Since then, the town has become synonymous with art and creativity, having provided a sanctuary for many famous painters, writers, and journalists. Paul Klee was inspired by the city's beauty and author (and Nobel laureate) André Gide had a house here.

What to Do

For many visitors, the most rewarding way to spend time in Sidi Bou Said is simply to stroll through the Old Town , exploring winding side streets and stopping to explore the town's art galleries , studios, and restaurants at leisure. The sidewalks are lined with stalls, whose wares include hand-crafted souvenirs and bottles of fragrant jasmine. Make sure that your wanderings take you up to the lighthouse, where spectacular Gulf of Tunis views awaits.

When you tire of walking, pay a visit to the home of Baron Rodolphe d'Erlanger. Named Ennejma Ezzahra , or Sparkling Star, the palace is a testament to the baron's love of Arabic culture. Its neo-Moorish architecture honors the age-old building techniques of Arabia and Andalucia, with a beautiful arched doorway and stunning examples of artisan wood carving, plasterwork, and mosaic tiling. The musicologist's legacy can also be explored at the  Centre des Musiques Arabes et Méditerranéennes .

There aren't many hotels to choose from in Sidi Bou Said. Of these, the most popular is La Villa Bleue , a magnificent traditional home nestled on the cliffside above the marina. Rendered in the customary shades of blue and white, the villa is a masterpiece of slender columns, intricate plasterwork, and cool marble. With only 13 rooms, it offers an intimate, relaxing experience that ties in with the town's reputation as a traveler's sanctuary. There's a gourmet restaurant, outdoor swimming pool with panoramic sea views, and a spa. After a busy day spent exploring the town, return for a traditional hammam and massage.

When it comes to restaurants, you're spoiled for choice—whether you're looking for a fine-dining experience or a cheap bite in an authentic café. For the former, try Au Bon Vieux Temps , a romantic garden restaurant with a mouthwatering menu featuring the Mediterranean and Tunisian classics. The food is complemented by mesmerizing ocean views and attentive service, and the wine list offers the chance to try regional Tunisian vintages. If you're thirsty rather than hungry, head to Café des Nattes, a Sidi Bou Said landmark beloved for its mint tea, Arabic coffee, and shisha pipes.

If you're traveling to Tunisia as part of a tour, it's highly likely that Sidi Bou Said will be one of your planned stops. In this case, you'll probably arrive on a tour bus and won't have to worry too much about how to get there. However, those that plan on exploring independently will find it equally easy to reach the town either in a hire car, a taxi, or with the help of public transport.

Sidi Bou Said is connected to central Tunis by a regular commuter train , known as the TGM. The journey takes approximately 35 minutes. Those with reduced mobility should be aware that it's a steep walk from the train station to the heart of the Old Town.

Where is Sidi Bou Said?

Tunisia, Sidi Bou Said, Minaret

Sidi Bou Said is located just outside the capital of Tunisia, Tunis.

It’s located in a region known as Carthage – the former capital of the country and an important trading post in Roman times.

Situated on a coastal cliff, Sidi Bou Said still boasts a beautiful sea town atmosphere and maintains a quaint, historic charm.

Frequented by wealthy Tunisians, many who come here at the weekend to escape the capital’s suburbs, Sidi Bou Said is quiet and peaceful – the perfect place to base yourself when first arriving in Tunisia.

In fact, I recommend heading here, rather than the capital, as you can easily explore Tunis from Sidi Bou Said if you wish.

Sidi Bou Said provides a much calmer atmosphere than bustling Tunis, is small and easy to get around, and is one of the most touristy places in Tunisia, which makes it a pretty soft landing spot.

But don’t be put off by me calling in touristy!

Given this is Tunisia, the tourist crowds as really pretty low and most visitors here are locals, which only adds to the appeal of this stunning seaside spot.

Why Visit Sidi Bou Said?

Tunisia, Sidi Bou Said, Sea View

If I haven’t already spelled it out, Sidi Bou Said is a beautiful, peaceful coastal town that exudes holiday vibes.

Filled with cute café, stunning streets, as well as traditional Tunisian life, it’s a safe and easy place to enjoy, be that chilling at the coast, sipping coffee with the locals, snapping the historic doorways or visiting many of the ancient UNESCO sites around.

Quite frankly, its charm levels are off the scale!

The perfect place to ease into Tunisia, I felt perfectly safe wandering around here as a solo female, and loved discovering the hidden corners and beautiful photographic moments it provided.

If you enjoyed Chefchaouen in Morocco , you’re going to love Sidi Bou Said, which I consider even more enchanting… not least because it’s far less well known.

Now in the process of becoming UNESCO listed, I highly recommend visiting this lovely spot before everyone else discovers it too!

Brief History of Sidi Bou Said

Tunisia, Sidi Bou Said, Rolled Rugs

Evidence of a settlement in this part of Tunisia dates back to Roman times, as well as the Phoenician rule – a seafaring civilisation that settled other parts of the south Mediterranean such as Lebanon too.

The village was expanded in the 11 th century by the Almoravids, but didn’t develop into anything like the town we recognise today until the 17th century, when the Tunisian bourgeois, attracted by the clean sea air, built most of the gorgeous traditional Arab-Andalusian houses you can still snap (and stay in) today.

Since 1915, it’s been necessary for all these houses to stick to the strict blue and white colour scheme, which help gave Sidi Bou Said the beguiling allure that remains to today.

Inspired by its stunning design and enchanting setting, Sidi Bou Said attracted artists and radical thinkers from across North Africa and Europe (including Simone de Beauvoir, Matisse, André Gide and Michel de Foucault) and developed a bohemian ambience that still persists in the cafés, shops and overall feel of the place.

Top Things to Do in Sidi Bou Said

Tunisia, Sidi Bou Said, People Talking

When it comes to the top things to do in Sidi Bou Sadi, then seriously wandering around the streets here soaking it all in has to be my top pick.

While not an activity in and of itself, Sidi Bou Said, is the sort of place you can just lose yourself in without a plan.

Perusing the shops, stopping for a tea, gazing over the sea and snapping a million photographs really is an activity here and personally, I can’t think of any better way to spend a day!

The top street for snaps here in my opinion is Rue Taieb Mhiri and its adjoining alleys, where gorgeous blue wooden doorways meet whitewashed walls that stream with bougainvillea and stories!

There’s also the city panorama platform further up this street and, not too far away, the Sidi Bou Said Lighthouse .

If you’re also into the relaxing feels, then heading to the Sidi Bou Said beach , located next to the harbour, is a great idea.

It’s accessed via a steep, small road, and is the perfect place to continue the chilled vibes.

Here the beach is free, but you can rent loungers and parasols if you wish.

There’s also water sports equipment for rent here if you do feel like being a bit more active.

Aside from the relaxing and soaking it all in, there are a couple of historical sites to visit in Sidi Bou Said, with Museum Dar el-Annabi , Palace Dar Nejma Ezzhar and Palais Dar Turki being my top picks.

The latter of these doubles as a guesthouse and wedding venue, but usually you can wander the gardens and peep inside the historic house and courtyard, which is done in the classic Arab-Andalusian style common across Tunisia.

If you’re not staying in a traditional Dar in Sidi Bou Said, then this one gives you a sneak peek into what they look like.

Another traditional space in town is Marsaoui Hammam – if you’re keen to get a classic Tunisian bath experience in Sidi Bou Said, then this is the place!

Including an authentic sauna and scrub experience, this is a tourist-friendly hammam with clear prices and clean surrounds, that also feels very genuine – it’s a great Tunisian experience!

The hammam is open every day except Tuesday, with female access between 10am and 6pm, and male access between 7pm and 10pm.

And finally, you can miss visiting the famous Carthage ruins and Punic Harbour just outside Sidi Bou Said.

2 very important historical sites (the ruins are even UNESCO listed), Carthage used to be the capital of the African province of the Roman Empire and was a huge Mediterranean trading port and incredibly affluent city as a result.

This historical site today is comprised of the city ruins, as well as battle sites, monuments and museums relating to the ancient empire that are dotted around it.

Included in this are the Carthage Punic Port and Museum , which are must visits, along with the Carthage National Museum .

You can wander these sites independently, but my recommendation is really to take a guide so you can understand more about what you are seeing.

This great half day walking tour is a super option, or why not add in an active element with this brilliant guided cycling tour .

Where to Stay?

Tunisia, Sidi Bou Said, Window Box

The best accommodation in Sidi Bou Said are local apartments or guesthouses known as Dar .

These provide modern comforts amidst traditional décor and beautifully impart the feeling of Sidi Bou Said.

Dar Fatma provides good value double rooms with beautiful views over the coast from its rooftop terrace.

Dar Said offers a mix of rooms from deluxe doubles to standard singles. Brilliantly located in the heart of Sidi Bou Said, it’s clean and comfortable with a fantastic welcome!

La Villa Bleue boasts a great location with parking and delicious breakfasts too. The views are lovely and it has a pool!

Where to Eat?

Tunisia, Sidi Bou Said, Food

Café des Nattes is the classic cafe in Sidi Bou Said you have to visit.

Once frequented by the great artists and thinkers of the 18 th and early 19 th century, it has survived to this day, remaining almost unchanged.

Sipping a coffee or mint tea here, you can just imagine the conversations that would have taken place in times gone by.

If you’ve been to Tangier in Morocco, then you’ll know what I mean!

For the Instagrammers and photographers among you, it’s all about heading for a drink or bite to eat with the best view in town at Café des Delices (also know as Café Sidi Chaabane).

If you’ve seen any amazing shots of Sidi Bou Said, with sweeping elevated coastal views, they were probably snapped here.

Restaurant Chargui is another top place to get dinner in the centre of Sidi Bou Said.

The outside terrace gets a lovely breeze and they serve up traditional Tunisian food with a relaxed local feel.

Head up to the top terrace for the best sea views.

When to Visit?

Tunisia, Sidi Bou Said, Minaret View

The best time to visit Sidi Bou Said is during the spring and autumn months, when the warm temperatures and low rainfall making visiting northern Tunisia a delight.

May, June and September are the best months in my opinion. when clear skies days with long daylight hours are ideal for sightseeing and sunbathing.

Learn more about the best time to visit Tunisia, including a month by month breakdown here .

How Long to Spend There?

Tunisia, Sidi Bou Said, Cafe

I recommend 2 days for Sidi Bou Said, which will allow you to explore this gorgeous town to its fullest, as well as enjoy a day trip out to the nearby Carthage ruins and Punic harbour.

How to Get There?

Tunisia, Sidi Bou Said, Blue Door

Sidi Bou Said is incredibly close the Tunisia’s main international airport – Tunis-Carthage – which is why many people head there when they first arrive into Tunisia.

The perfect place to acclimatise to a new country, Sidi Bou Said is only about a 20 minute drive from the airport and can easily be made in a taxi.

I recommend the rideshare app Bolt  to ensure guaranteed prices and avoid any potential language barriers.

Flights into Tunis-Carthage Airport arrive from across Europe and the Middle East.

As always I use Skyscanner to find the best flight prices.

How to Get Around?

Tunisia, Sidi Bou Said, Street and Door

It’s easy to walk around Sidi Bou Said, as the centre is compact and cobbled – in fact most of it is pedestrianised, so cars are a no-go!

When it comes to exploring beyond the town to nearby attractions such as the Carthage ruins, I recommend either using public transport or taking a half day tour.

Public transport is obviously cheaper, and you can use both the train or the bus to get around Carthage or into Tunis from Sidi Bou Said.

The TGM suburban railway operated by Transtu is the rail service you need. Line 1 operates to Carthage.

A bus service is also available – I recommend asking locals for the latest updates.

Alternatively, and especially if you’re into history, you may appreciate taking a day your from Sidi Bou Said, in particular to the Carthage ruins, so that you can learn more about this UNESCO historical site.

Check out these top day trips for more ideas.

Port Marina de Gammarth

A new marina, modern luxury.

The recently opened Port Marina de Gammarth is Tunisia’s newest marina – and one that promises to be an ideal alternative to the closed Bizerte. Located close to Tunis, this marina already has a reputation for luxury, and for captains it combines fantastic surroundings with berths for superyachts  to  35 metres.

Gammarth at a glance

  • The latest modern marina to open in Tunisia
  • 14 berths of 25 metres and one long-side berth of 35 metres
  • Electric gates, CCTV and 24-hour security guards
  • Side-to bunkering quay
  • Excellent location near high-quality restaurants and shops

Why berth at Gammarth with YST?

  • The perfect alternative to Bizerte

The closest marina in Tunisia to Tunis and a gas station, water and electricity available on the quay, some Captains prefer to use Marina Gammarth over Bizerte.

  • An ideal location for non-VAT paid yachts

Located just outside the European Union but also within easy reach of the Western Mediterranean cruising grounds, Gammarth Marina occupies the ideal place for non-VAT paid yachts looking to sort their paperwork.

Benefit from local knowledge with English-speaking experts

The language barrier need not concern you if you berth at Gammarth with YST. Our friendly, knowledgeable staff not only speak your language, but have extensive industry experience. That means you can trust us to take care of everything from customs paperwork to advising you on the best local restaurants.

Gammarth Beach

Stretching alongside the town, Gammarth Beach is a pleasant place to go to unwind and try out a few beach activities.

The nearby Residence Golf Course provides a modern golfing experience, with the course designed by Robert Trent Jones II. This 18-hole course allows you to tee off in scenic surroundings, thanks to its stunning natural setting between the sea and a salt lake.

Thanks to its location between Tunis and La Marsa, Gammarth is a great place for shopping. You will be spoilt for choice with everything from stylish boutiques to tempting delicatessens.

Restaurants

Nearby La Marsa is the ideal place to go for an evening out, whether you are seeking fine dining or to let your hair down in the local nightclubs.

Having inspired dramatic legends and sitting just outside Gammarth, the ancient city of Carthage is a must-visit. Encircled by 34 km walls, these historic ruins include Roman baths, ancient streets, homes and much more. Plus, you can visit the Carthage Museum to take a look at some of the amazing finds discovered here, including mosaics and statues.

Sidi Bou Said

With its beautiful clifftop location and pretty blue-and-white buildings, Sidi Bou Said is an enchanting place to visit. The spectacular sea views alone are worthy of a visit, but the town itself is just as scenic, looking very much like a slice of Greece. The streets are lined with flower-draped buildings, cafes, souvenir shops and art shops, helping to make a trip here an excellent day out.

Bardo Museum

The country’s finest museum is just a short distance from Gammarth in the capital city of Tunis. Housing an unmissable collection of ancient North African artefacts, it displays everything from Roman mosaics to early Islamic ceramics. What’s more, the collection is housed in a stunning palace, which is worth a visit in its own right.

Sidi Bou Said travel guide

Sidi Bou Said is known for charming white-blue houses and cobblestoned streets. But this photogenic town is also much more. Today, I share Sidi Bou Said travel guide with you. Get to know everything about traveling to Sidi Bou Said. After reading this article, you will be convinced to add this hidden gem to your list of must-visit destinations. Now, shall we start?

Sidi Bou Said travel guide

What is Sidi Bou Said?

So, let’s start the Sidi Bou Said travel guide with the most relevant thing: introducing the destination. Sidi Bou Said is a small town built on high ground, about 20 km from Tunis. It is famous for its buildings being painted in blue and white colors. In 1920 French painter and baron Rodolphe d’Erlanger decided to paint his palace in blue and white colors, and the rest of the village followed his example. The town is so beautiful that most of the time you will admire the stunning landscapes and architecture. Also, tourists have found this beauty, and the town has become one of Tunisia’s most popular tourist attractions.

Where is Sidi Bou Said?

Sidi Bou Said is a town by the Mediterranean sea in the northern part of Tunisia. It’s situated about 20 km northeast of the capital Tunis, 80 km from Hammamet, and 160 km from Sousse. Note to yourself that there is no airport at Sidi Bou Said. Take a flight to the closest international Tunis-Carthage airport or any other airport.

Tunis-Carthage airport 16km Carthage National Museum 3km Azur City mall 30km Bardo National Museum 23km

How to get to Sidi Bou Said? - Sidi Bou Said travel guide

The closest airport to Sidi Bou Said is the international Tunis Carthage airport. From the Tunis airport, the best way to get to Sidi Bou Said is by taxi. A taxi or car ride will take about 25 minutes.

There is a TGM train connection between Tunis city center and Sidi Bou Said. The train ride will take about 30 minutes, and tickets are very affordable. Another option to reach Sidi Bou Said from the city center is a taxi. It’s definitely the smoothest way of traveling and costs about 5 euros. I have also written an ultimate Tunis travel guide . Check it out, if you are planning to visit the stunning capital of Tunisia.

Especially during the summer, Sidi Bou Said is crowded as it’s a beloved destination among tourists and locals. For this reason, I don’t recommend getting there by car. But if you do, be prepared to park your car quite far. The town itself is small, and driving a car inside the small cobbled stoned streets is allowed only for residents. Walking is the best way to get around Sidi Bou Said.

As Sidi Bou Said is one of the top attractions in Tunisia, there are several organized tours for tourists to discover this beautiful town. Contact a tour organizer or hotel, and they will help you find a suitable excursion.

How big is Sidi Bou Said? - Sidi Bou Said travel guide

Sidi Bou Said, a picturesque small town, has a population of ca.7000 people. In addition, the town is small in size as well, a little over 2 square kilometers. You won’t need more than just a couple of hours, and you have discovered all streets of Sidi Bou Said.

Visit Art Gallery

Through the years, the town has been a home for many artists. If you are interested in arts, I recommend visiting the art gallery Galeri A.Gorgi and Selma Feriani Gallery.

Galeri A.Gorgi is located just in the heart of Sidi Bou Said. It was created by Tunisian painter Abdelaziz Gorgi. You might come across the old name of the gallery Ammar Farhat, so do not get confused! Galeri A. Gorgi is a large and active art gallery focused on contemporary art. This gallery shares artwork of Tunisian artists. Therefore, I encourage you to visit Galeri A. Gorgi if you are interested in the art of Tunisian artists.

Selma Feriani Gallery was established in 2013 by gallerist Selma Feriani. Its artworks represent artists from the MENA region and also other international artists. The goal of the Selma Feriani Gallery is to support young artists and share their works with the public. Selma’s idea is to follow her taste in contemporary art, and she chooses the artworks that she could imagine owning.

If you are looking for more options, check the list of the best art galleries in Tunis.

Visit Palace Ennejma Ezzahra - Sidi Bou Said travel guide

Palace Ennejma Ezzahra is one of the top attractions in Sidi Bou Said. This palace was owned by French painter and baron Rodolphe d’Erlanger. He was the first one who decided to paint his palace in blue and white colors, and the rest of the village followed his example.

Nowadays, the Palace Ennejma Ezzahra works as a museum, monument of Arab-Islamic architecture, and center of Arabic and Mediterranean music.

Visit Museum Dar El-Annabi

Museums Dar El-Annabi is giving you a chance to discover an old traditional Sidi Bou Said residence. Visitors can admire the private library, prayer room, living room, bedrooms, garden, and terrace with a panoramic view of the Gulf of Tunis. A great spot for a person who is interested in architecture. Dar El-Annabi gives an insight into life before.

Tunisia places to visit

Where to stay? Sidi Bou Said travel guide

There are not too many hotels in the area due to the small size of Sidi Bou Said. But the selection of the hotels includes wonderful boutique hotels. In addition, you will find a good amount of Airbnb options. In general, the price level of the accommodations is slightly higher than elsewhere in Tunisia. I highly encourage you to book a hotel or Airbnb for one or two nights and enjoy the stunning views.

La Villa Bleue

La Villa Bleue is located in the heart of Sidi Bou Said. The hotel offers its guests a selection of 13 rooms and suites. All the rooms are decorated differently, following modern and traditional designs.

Start your day with a delicious breakfast on the terrace and enjoy the stunning view of the Mediterranean sea. If you want extra relaxation, try traditional Hamman with Spa treatments or spend time by the pool. The hotel has a great restaurant that is worth trying. Have a dinner of Tunisian and Mediterranean dishes with an elegant touch.

Hotel Dar Said

A stay in Hotel Dar Said gives you a view of the Gulf of Tunis, an outdoor swimming pool, a hammam, and breakfast prepared with local ingredients. Start a day with breakfast calmly in the hotel’s garden. The hotel’s location in the center of the town gives you easy access to the town. Willing to swim? The closest beach is about 1km away.

Villa Kahina - Sidi Bou Said travel guide

Stunning white and blue colored Villa Kahina is located at the tip of Sidi Bou Said. The villa has been renovated and opened for accommodation use quite recently. This six-room villa offers its visitors complete relaxation and a calm atmosphere. The villa is close to everything, but there is not too much traffic and wandering tourists. The location “at the end of the street” is perfect.

Are you hesitating about which hotel to choose in Sidi Bou Said? I really recommend choosing Villa Kahina… I guess it has enchanted me.

La Demeure is a guest house located in the historical Sidi Bou Said. You are welcomed to the luxury guest house, where you can choose to stay in one of the five suites and enjoy the breathtaking view of the Mediterranean beachfront. Check pictures of La Demeure, and you might choose this one for your next stay in Sidi Bou Said.

The hotels’ prices tend to increase in the summertime. The other great option for accommodation is Airbnb. Sidi Bou Said has a great selection of Airbnb options to choose from. Check their website and pick one that fits your standards, and you might find a real gem at a good price.

How many days should I spend in Sidi Bou Said?

You should spend at least one day or night in Sidi Bou Said. Then you will have time to discover the cultural attractions, eat in a pleasant restaurant, and enjoy the stunning view in one of the cafes. But if you have a limited schedule, a couple of hours in Sidi Bou Said is enough to see all the top attractions and eat one Bambalouni.

Are you planning to spend one week or more in Sidi Bou Said? I would say that there aren’t enough things to do in Sidi Bou Said for one week. If you are looking for a holiday filled with activities. But the town’s location is excellent, and places such as Carthage, Medina, and Tunis are nearby.

The best time to visit Sidi Bou Said is in spring and autumn. The temperature isn’t too hot from March to May and September-November, and the town is not so crowded. Also, finding reasonably priced accommodation is easier.

Where to eat - Sidi Bou Said travel guide

Even if you are not going to stay in Sidi Bou Said overnight, you should have enough time for lunch or dinner. Try one of the listed restaurants, and you will have a happy tummy.

Villa Bleue

La Villa Bleue is five stars hotel that offers outstanding facilities and views. The place itself is already worth visiting but they also serve delicious food. The menu contains Tunisian and Mediterranean dishes with an elegant touch. If you are looking for a sophisticated restaurant, this is the perfect place. La Villa Bleau is a high-end restaurant where food, atmosphere, facilities, and service are 5/5. I must add that this place has an excellent price-quality ratio.

Au Bon Vieux Temps

A restaurant, Au Bon Vieux Temps, serves Tunisian and French cuisine. In the world culinary awards 2011, the restaurant was a nominee in Africa’s best restaurant category. Au Bon Vieux Temps offers high-quality food with a stunning sea view. A perfect restaurant for special occasions: birthdays, celebrations, dates, and business meetings.

Restaurant Dar Zarrouk

Dar Zarrouk is a high-end restaurant in the heart of Sidi Bou Said. Here you fill your stomach with French cuisine, tapas, desserts, and also Tunisian specialties. Their wine menu contains mostly Tunisian wines as well Champagnes. A perfect restaurant for a little celebration or date. If you are not feeling hungry, have a cocktail or cup of warming tea in their bar.

Best cafes - Sidi Bou Said travel guide

sidi bou said blue and white

Maybe you have just a couple of hours to enjoy in Sidi Bou Said or looking for a spot for a cup of coffee. I am here to share three great cafes with you.

Cafe Des Delices is the most well-known cafe in Sidi Bou Said and is popular among tourists. The reason why you should go here is the location and spectacular views. Unfortunately, the prices are slightly more expensive, and the service is not top-notch.

Cafe Des Nattes is another popular cafe. Enjoy your cup of mint tea or lemonade surrounded by blue and white houses. In addition, the cafe is decorated in the traditional Tunisian way. Note that this cafe does not have a sea view, but a wonderful view anyway.

The restaurant Blu Blu Sidi Bou serves dinner, but they have a wide selection of sweets and beverages. The decoration and atmosphere are more modern. A great place to spend your evening!

Cafes in Sidi Bou Said

This was my ultimate Sidi Bou Said travel guide. Are you convinced to travel there? Let me know in the comments if you have any questions. I will be glad to help. See you again next week, take care and enjoy the beginning of September.

How to Spend One Day in Sidi Bou Saïd, Tunisia’s Picturesque Town

Many people are familiar with Santorini, Greece for its immaculately white village perfectly paired with magnificent views of the Aegean Sea. On the other hand, Chefchaouen, Morocco, which has been gaining momentum recently, is a city within mountains painted in shades of blue, rightfully earning the nickname “Blue City”.

What if I told you there is a town that combines the characteristics of Santorini and Chaouen? And yes, such a town really exists! Sidi Bou Saïd is one of the most picturesque towns in Tunisia and in northern Africa. It’s a town known to have attracted artists, musicians, writers, and the bourgeoisies. With its blue and white painted cliffside homes, you can see why!

Exploring Sidi Bou Said

We arrived by car and were immediately in awe by the crystal blue of the Mediterranean Sea. Sidi Bou Saïd sits on a cliff and is composed of narrow, hilly roads. At a certain point, you’re better off on foot. For this reason, wear comfortable shoes!

location yacht sidi bou said

The main road in Sidi is naturally touristic. Here is where we came across countless shops selling Tunisian attire, cafés, and food vendors. While my partner and I really enjoy seeing the sights wherever we travel, we also try to take the time to get off the beaten path. It’s much less crowded and we love the opportunity to really see  our surroundings. Even if it’s just for a short period of time, I recommend taking some time to roam and people watch in your new environment.

By the time we reached Sidi Bou Saïd, it was lunch time. As we walked along the main road, we were checking for restaurants to settle into. Rather, I should say my partner was looking for restaurants.

location yacht sidi bou said

I kept stopping to admire all of the beautiful grand doors we kept coming across. So blue, so exquisite, and the Moorish architecture really topped it off. I lost count of how many doors I walked up to just to admire their impeccable designs.

In a town of blue and white, we came across this beautiful yellow door hidden away by a garden. Perfect way to be subtle, yet standout.

Eating at Café Des Délices

We came across many restaurants but none of them met our one criteria:  sea view ! I just want to express how happy I am that we didn’t give up because as we kept walking uphill, we found the perfect place… Café Des Délices . From the main road, there are steps leading down to the entrance of the café and the view is just unbeatable!

location yacht sidi bou said

Lesson: don’t settle for less! Here’s a photo of our view as we ate delicious hummus, and a seafood, and lamb platter, with harissa of course.

location yacht sidi bou said

I think we sat, eating and relaxing for close to 2 hours before we continued our exploration of Sidi Bou Saïd. Despite wearing comfortable sandals, my feet needed that break. We returned to the main road and turned right on the first street to get off the touristic path. We walked uphill, downhill, turned several lefts and rights – just getting lost.

location yacht sidi bou said

As you can see, we didn’t have a crazy itinerary in Sidi except to eat and explore. Sometimes that’s all we really need to be  in the moment and take in life’s simple pleasures.

Wow! I would have never guessed that all these photos were from Tunisia! How long was the drive to Sidi Bou? Did you rent a car, or hire a driver?

We drove from Sousse to Carthage, and then Sidi Bou Said. I would say it was about a 2-2.5 hour drive. However, as you get closer to Carthage/Sidi Bou, you must pass through Tunis (the capital) and if there is traffic, it will slow you down. We hired a driver. 🙂

location yacht sidi bou said

Ok, so this place looks incredible. Something out of a dream! And those doors. All the blue doors and that yellow one WOW!! just wow! I need to go here NOW!! You have completely sold me here.

Hahah.. I appreciate your words, Louise! Please please go if you have the chance. It’s such a calm, beautiful place that somehow brings you joy!

Global Ports

Sidi Bou Said is a town located about twenty kilometers north-east of Tunis. Perched on a cliff overlooking Carthage and the Gulf of Tunis, it is named after a saint, Sidi Bou Saïd El Beji.

The international fame of the village was acquired in 1912 thanks to an English baron who built a magnificent palace. Sidi Bou Said became then a place of rest and inspiration to many artists, musicians and writers such as Chateaubriand, Gustave Flaubert, Alphonse de Lamartine, André Gide, Colette, Simone de Beauvoir, etc.

Picturesque white and blue village, Sidi Bou Said enchants with the magic of its colors, its streets of bougainvillea and the beauty of its traditional architecture, jealously preserved.

Dar El Annabi: The almost bewitching Alleys,  may  lead you to Dar El Annabi, a house of about fifty rooms, built in the 18th century. Nicknamed “the palace of a thousand and one nights”. Today it is a museum proposing works and objects of Arab-Muslim style. Sidi Bou Said cafés:  If there is an attraction not to be missed in Sidi Bou Said is its cafes. They are meeting places for artists for over a century. The most famous are the Café des Nattes  and Café Sidi chabaane renamed café des délices " delights café”. This one offers undoubtedly the most enchanting sunset over the Gulf of Tunis.

Sidi Bou Saïd's marina :  famous by its cafés and restaurants of local specialities.

The Ennejma Ezzahra palace  : Gather at the Ennejma Ezzahra palace to enjoy the music of Arab Mediterranean Music Center nested at the heart of a standing garden of jasmine and bougainvilleas. The palace also has  beautiful and rich collections of manuscripts, paintings and carpets.

Art galleries:  SALADIN, GHAYA, THE BLUE VIOLIN, AGORGI, so many artistic stop points promoting Tunisian and foreign talents.

Souvenirs & Handicrafts: A must visit with its countless shops and displays, from the entrance of the village, they offer handicrafts from all regions of Tunisia: jewelry, ornaments, carpets, pottery, crockery, perfumes, incense ... and of course, the village typical souvenir : a painted iron cage in blue and white colors, evocative of the place, all in arabesque carved curves. Declined in all dimensions, it is in itself a decorative element, surpassing its original purpose.
