Owner’s comments

Swing Cat has beaching keels and kick-up rudders so is happy drying out in tidal creeks.  Its wind generator and 6 solar panels charge 500Ah of battery storage which provides electrical energy via 12V DC and 240V AC distribution.    One can live off the grid with a high level of creature comforts while remaining connected to the shore via computers and mobile phones (if desired!).

When on shore power in a marina, full use can be made of a microwave, toaster, electric kettle and electric heating.

The interior accommodation consists of a double cabin in the stern of each hull and single cabins in the bow of each hull, giving sleeping accommodation for 6.    The bridgedeck cabin provides comfortable seating around a large table and access to both hulls.    A cockpit awning, together with cockpit cushions, provide further shady seating in the cockpit as well as shelter from any shower.    The trampoline forward of the bridgedeck, between the hulls, is a favourite place for sunbathing, watching the sun go down, or for watching dolphins on passage.

The hulls and cabins are fully lined and insulated ensuring a cool interior on hot days and a cosy interior on cool days.    When at anchor on cold evenings a wood burning stove is available.

Swing Cat is designed to have minimal impact on the environment.    The sources of renewable energy means there is no need to have a fossil fuel generator.    There is an electric motor for the tender.

There is no discharge of sewerage from the boat and no conventional holding tank.    An ecological toilet ensures the separation of liquids from solids with both being captured, and disposed of, separately.    The absence of urine in the solids tank, together with the use of mechanical ventilation, ensures that using the heads is a pleasant experience!

Swing Cat also has a grey water tank for cruising in environmentally sensitive areas. This tank retains washing-up and shower water until it is OK to discharge it – for example when dried out on a beach, grey water can be discharged only when the tide is in and the boat is afloat.

With forward-looking sonar, broadband radar, AIS Tx & Rx, VHF radio, Echomax radar reflector, electronic chart plotter, full size chart table and safety equipment, including lightning protection, Swing Cat is fully equipped for creek crawling or bluewater sailing.

Swing Cat was built by its owner starting in 2011 and was launched in 2016.    The website documenting the build and its sea trials can be found at www.swingcat.co.uk

The reason for the sale is that the owner and his family no longer have as much time for sailing as they did previously.

Rig and Sails

Auxilary power, accomodations, calculations.

The theoretical maximum speed that a displacement hull can move efficiently through the water is determined by it's waterline length and displacement. It may be unable to reach this speed if the boat is underpowered or heavily loaded, though it may exceed this speed given enough power. Read more.

Classic hull speed formula:

Hull Speed = 1.34 x √LWL

Max Speed/Length ratio = 8.26 ÷ Displacement/Length ratio .311 Hull Speed = Max Speed/Length ratio x √LWL

Sail Area / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the power of the sails relative to the weight of the boat. The higher the number, the higher the performance, but the harder the boat will be to handle. This ratio is a "non-dimensional" value that facilitates comparisons between boats of different types and sizes. Read more.

SA/D = SA ÷ (D ÷ 64) 2/3

  • SA : Sail area in square feet, derived by adding the mainsail area to 100% of the foretriangle area (the lateral area above the deck between the mast and the forestay).
  • D : Displacement in pounds.

Ballast / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the stability of a boat's hull that suggests how well a monohull will stand up to its sails. The ballast displacement ratio indicates how much of the weight of a boat is placed for maximum stability against capsizing and is an indicator of stiffness and resistance to capsize.

Ballast / Displacement * 100

Displacement / Length Ratio

A measure of the weight of the boat relative to it's length at the waterline. The higher a boat’s D/L ratio, the more easily it will carry a load and the more comfortable its motion will be. The lower a boat's ratio is, the less power it takes to drive the boat to its nominal hull speed or beyond. Read more.

D/L = (D ÷ 2240) ÷ (0.01 x LWL)³

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds.
  • LWL: Waterline length in feet

Comfort Ratio

This ratio assess how quickly and abruptly a boat’s hull reacts to waves in a significant seaway, these being the elements of a boat’s motion most likely to cause seasickness. Read more.

Comfort ratio = D ÷ (.65 x (.7 LWL + .3 LOA) x Beam 1.33 )

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds
  • LOA: Length overall in feet
  • Beam: Width of boat at the widest point in feet

Capsize Screening Formula

This formula attempts to indicate whether a given boat might be too wide and light to readily right itself after being overturned in extreme conditions. Read more.

CSV = Beam ÷ ³√(D / 64)

Brand: Woods 22 Wizard

richard woods catamarans for sale

The WIZARD is a revolutionary design that offers 5 – 6 berths in 3 cabins, standing headroom, easy trailing, stability AND performance. The lifting hatch combined with the ‘pop-bottom’ gives standing headroom in the bridgedeck. The latter is raised when sailing. For the first time in a trailable catamaran there is a genuine double bunk.

It is legally trailable world-wide behind a family car. One person can assemble and rig it in under an hour ready for launching with no heavy lifting (e.g. the mast is raised using the trailer winch).

The Wizard is roomy. In its 22′ length there are 5 berths in 3 cabins for privacy (3 singles in the hulls and one double on the bridge deck), a separate toilet compartment. Galley and a dinette seating 5. There is standing headroom in the galley using a “pop bottom” in the bridge deck. For an interior drawing see Sango which has a similar layout.

It is fast, the computer predicts speeds of 10 knots under power (with a 15hp outboard) and 16-18 knots under sail (with the racing rig). These prediction have been well proven many times in practice. Yet it remains maneuverable and easy to sail single-handed. It has shallow draft and is beachable.

Savvino-storozhevsky monastery and museum.

Savvino-Storozhevsky Monastery and Museum

Zvenigorod's most famous sight is the Savvino-Storozhevsky Monastery, which was founded in 1398 by the monk Savva from the Troitse-Sergieva Lavra, at the invitation and with the support of Prince Yury Dmitrievich of Zvenigorod. Savva was later canonised as St Sabbas (Savva) of Storozhev. The monastery late flourished under the reign of Tsar Alexis, who chose the monastery as his family church and often went on pilgrimage there and made lots of donations to it. Most of the monastery’s buildings date from this time. The monastery is heavily fortified with thick walls and six towers, the most impressive of which is the Krasny Tower which also serves as the eastern entrance. The monastery was closed in 1918 and only reopened in 1995. In 1998 Patriarch Alexius II took part in a service to return the relics of St Sabbas to the monastery. Today the monastery has the status of a stauropegic monastery, which is second in status to a lavra. In addition to being a working monastery, it also holds the Zvenigorod Historical, Architectural and Art Museum.

Belfry and Neighbouring Churches

richard woods catamarans for sale

Located near the main entrance is the monastery's belfry which is perhaps the calling card of the monastery due to its uniqueness. It was built in the 1650s and the St Sergius of Radonezh’s Church was opened on the middle tier in the mid-17th century, although it was originally dedicated to the Trinity. The belfry's 35-tonne Great Bladgovestny Bell fell in 1941 and was only restored and returned in 2003. Attached to the belfry is a large refectory and the Transfiguration Church, both of which were built on the orders of Tsar Alexis in the 1650s.

richard woods catamarans for sale

To the left of the belfry is another, smaller, refectory which is attached to the Trinity Gate-Church, which was also constructed in the 1650s on the orders of Tsar Alexis who made it his own family church. The church is elaborately decorated with colourful trims and underneath the archway is a beautiful 19th century fresco.

Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral

richard woods catamarans for sale

The Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral is the oldest building in the monastery and among the oldest buildings in the Moscow Region. It was built between 1404 and 1405 during the lifetime of St Sabbas and using the funds of Prince Yury of Zvenigorod. The white-stone cathedral is a standard four-pillar design with a single golden dome. After the death of St Sabbas he was interred in the cathedral and a new altar dedicated to him was added.

richard woods catamarans for sale

Under the reign of Tsar Alexis the cathedral was decorated with frescoes by Stepan Ryazanets, some of which remain today. Tsar Alexis also presented the cathedral with a five-tier iconostasis, the top row of icons have been preserved.

Tsaritsa's Chambers

richard woods catamarans for sale

The Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral is located between the Tsaritsa's Chambers of the left and the Palace of Tsar Alexis on the right. The Tsaritsa's Chambers were built in the mid-17th century for the wife of Tsar Alexey - Tsaritsa Maria Ilinichna Miloskavskaya. The design of the building is influenced by the ancient Russian architectural style. Is prettier than the Tsar's chambers opposite, being red in colour with elaborately decorated window frames and entrance.

richard woods catamarans for sale

At present the Tsaritsa's Chambers houses the Zvenigorod Historical, Architectural and Art Museum. Among its displays is an accurate recreation of the interior of a noble lady's chambers including furniture, decorations and a decorated tiled oven, and an exhibition on the history of Zvenigorod and the monastery.

Palace of Tsar Alexis

richard woods catamarans for sale

The Palace of Tsar Alexis was built in the 1650s and is now one of the best surviving examples of non-religious architecture of that era. It was built especially for Tsar Alexis who often visited the monastery on religious pilgrimages. Its most striking feature is its pretty row of nine chimney spouts which resemble towers.

The Unique Burial of a Child of Early Scythian Time at the Cemetery of Saryg-Bulun (Tuva)

<< Previous page

Pages:  379-406

In 1988, the Tuvan Archaeological Expedition (led by M. E. Kilunovskaya and V. A. Semenov) discovered a unique burial of the early Iron Age at Saryg-Bulun in Central Tuva. There are two burial mounds of the Aldy-Bel culture dated by 7th century BC. Within the barrows, which adjoined one another, forming a figure-of-eight, there were discovered 7 burials, from which a representative collection of artifacts was recovered. Burial 5 was the most unique, it was found in a coffin made of a larch trunk, with a tightly closed lid. Due to the preservative properties of larch and lack of air access, the coffin contained a well-preserved mummy of a child with an accompanying set of grave goods. The interred individual retained the skin on his face and had a leather headdress painted with red pigment and a coat, sewn from jerboa fur. The coat was belted with a leather belt with bronze ornaments and buckles. Besides that, a leather quiver with arrows with the shafts decorated with painted ornaments, fully preserved battle pick and a bow were buried in the coffin. Unexpectedly, the full-genomic analysis, showed that the individual was female. This fact opens a new aspect in the study of the social history of the Scythian society and perhaps brings us back to the myth of the Amazons, discussed by Herodotus. Of course, this discovery is unique in its preservation for the Scythian culture of Tuva and requires careful study and conservation.

Keywords: Tuva, Early Iron Age, early Scythian period, Aldy-Bel culture, barrow, burial in the coffin, mummy, full genome sequencing, aDNA

Elf 8m trailable open deck production boat

Provisional Specification LOA 7.6m BOA 5m Sail Area: Mainsail 27sqm Jib 14.5sqm Mast length 11m Empty weight 850kgs Displacement to WL 1350kgs Draft 300mm (1300 boards down, 900 for LAR keels) 2 single berths in each hull: Fwd 900 wide, aft 800 wide Headroom 1.85m

The 8m Elf has had several reincarnations as different builders developed the boat. The original Mk1 was a 25ft boat built in Germany. Only a few were made, but some sailed long distances, see owners comments below and video here

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I5nMxIwiBeg

The Mk2 was also an open deck boat and was built, very heavily in solid glass, in S Africa and was extended to 26ft. It also became a well proven design, again see owners comments below

Then in the 1990's a few were built in the UK. We added a removable cuddy cabin, even so it was still transportable, though not really trailable.

Now the Elf has another new lease of life. Updated, with a modern, lighter laminate and rig. Once again it is an open deck design and available with daggerboards or LAR keels. The transom has been shortened to allow for the simpler transom mounted rudders. Although it is a big boat it is still trailable, each hull is under 1.2m wide. The aluminium crossbeams are fitted with metal straps as on Strider to allow for complete disassembly. The first hulls have now been made for a UK buyer, see photo above and launching below

Initially just hulls and decks will be available allowing owners to fit out their own boats. Later complete boats will be available. Hulls are built using pvc foam and biaxial glass.

The drawings below show the open deck Mk2 version, the new one is similar but the hatches are now at the back of the cabin, not at the side. There is a lot of room in the hulls, especially compared to the Strider and Sango. The woman in the photo below is 1.7m tall

Owners Comments

“At the end of March 2007 I sailed single handed, as always, the 900 miles back from the Canaries to Almeria in Southern Spain. On the last day, after three and a half days at sea, a storm of wind of a steady force 8 with gusts to F10 caught me and my Elf catamaran. The Woods Design made 5 to 7 knots without sails and I also used a car tire to slow down somewhat, and to keep control.”

“Two Elves set off for Langebaan the weekend before Christmas and en route, stopped off at Dassen Island to catch, cook and eat crayfish, that are in ample abundance. The trip was a total distance of about 115 nm. The average speed attained during this trip was 12 knots.

We moored the two boats at the Langebaan Yacht Club and returned on the 26 th December for the start of the West Coast Cruise. Sixty-eight yachts took part and the start was at 7am on the 27 th December with the wind at about 6 - 8 knots. Both the boats had 4 adults on board plus stores and provisions for the same for 5 days. I estimate that we had 800kg loading per boat.

After a slow start the wind slowly picked up to 25/30 knots on the beam. We upped the kites and hauled in boats like there was no tomorrow. We kept the kite up when it started gusting 35 knots and, believe me, if there was a dinghy on board, old Pete would have gone home. Swells were running at about 4 metres, wind gusting 36 knots, boat speed 18 knots, creaking, groaning and flexing and overtaking monohulls like it was a demolition derby. We arrived at the first stop-over in 11 th and 12 th position over the line.

The Elf was the talk of the cruise. We were even blamed for causing a severe broach on a 43' Mono-hull. The skipper said, “We were humping along at 10 knots when one of the crew on board said to me, 'Look at the little spinnakers bearing down on us'. Within minutes you guys were alongside, then disappeared forward, drinking out of glasses while we were walking on the windows - I just lost my concentration and we ended up in a horrendous broach.” Another had just launched his IMS Racer and could not believe what we did to him. He said that it felt like he had put his brakes on.

Reckless decided on day two to beach in Lamberts Bay. The race to Elands Bay and Port Owen started at 6 am with Reckless left high and dry on the beach. Etienne managed to get off at 1500 hrs that afternoon and in winds pushing 40/50 knots decide to beat for Port Owen @ 70 nm. I was not aboard naturally, but they said they were beating @ 12 knots 35 degree apparent wind, swells 5 metres. They arrived in Port Owen at 23.55 hrs that night to a very angry reception from me, for their radio had packed up and they had notified no-one as to where, when or how they were going. Etienne's remarks were, “I'm tired, the boat didn't fall apart and we're home,” and promptly retired for the night. “

“Fred took the Elf 26 out for a sail recently in fairly rough conditions. The average wind speed was 28 knots, gusting to 35 knots. The planned route was from Willik Marina, past Groot Eiland to the power lines. This distance is normally covered in 2 ½ hours by a keel boat sailing with good winds. Fred left the marina and some 16 minutes later had passed Groot Eiland and a further 36 minutes saw them at the power lines.

Fred commented that at no time did the boat feel unstable, if anything it appeared quite unexciting until you looked over the stern and saw the water thrown up to resemble a huge rooster's tail. An estimate of the speed was an average of 15 knots and possible close to 20 knots on occasions. This was achieved using the full main and standard jib. The boat was sailed on a reach most of the time and occasionally running down wind.

Fred praised the boat's performance saying it was superbly stable and immediately inspired confidence. This praise from an experienced skipper confirms several other reports of the vessel's seaworthiness for safe, fun, family cruising.”

“Just back in England from Sark, Herm and Guernsey in our Elf. Still loving her versatility, like drying out on the beach and anchoring in 1m.”

“I was thinking about an asymmetric spinnaker, easier to handle with two small boys aboard! We fully intend to enjoy her, we are teachers, we have two boys 6 and 2. We're looking to spend the six week summer break along the Brittany / Normandy coast.”

“I bought one of your 26ft Elf cat designed boats built in South Africa. I sail it in Tanzania and I really enjoy the boat. It was modified by raising the boom and fitting a solid Bimini which reduced the sail area and increased the weight. So the boat is slow in light winds but great in any thing above 12 knots and I have never had to reef the main.”

"We averaged between 8-10 knots on a broad reach in 15-18 knots of wind and a 1.5m (5ft) swell. 12 guests and 2 crew - 14 adults on board! Everyone was mega impressed."

If you can believe it, that’s just the beginning. Julia Kaptelova artfully shot every detail, like the ballet performance guests were treated to and snow falling from the ceiling for the first dance! From About You Decor … Our design is a symbol of dawn and a distant endless horizon. Ahead is a long, happy life without any borders. An international couple, Pavel and Cherry, met in London and have been walking together for many years.

From the Bride, Cherry… My husband and I we decided to have our summer wedding in Moscow because the city is where his roots are. As we knew we were going to have the other wedding ceremony in China, we wanted our Moscow one to be very personal and intimate. We’ve known each other since we were fourteen, together with many of our friends whom we’ve also known for a decade.

I didn’t want to walk down the aisle twice so the plausibility of my request quickly came into discussion. The open pontoon stage was constructed in order to facilitate the bridal entrance on water, although there were concerns about safety as the last thing we wanted was probably a drowned bride before she could get on stage, picture that! I have to say on that day it wasn’t easy to get on the pontoon stage from the boat, in my long gown and high heels. Luckily my bridesmaids still noticed even though they stood the furthest from me on the stage, and helped me out without prior rehearsal. My girls could just tell whenever I needed a hand or maybe they were just so used to my clumsiness. Who knows 😂

We all love our photographer Julia! She’s so talented and her style is so unique. Our beloved host Alex is exceptional who made everyone laugh and cry. It was truly a blessing to have so many kind and beautiful souls on our big day. Thank you all!

I’m still not convinced this Moscow wedding, captured to perfection by  Sonya Khegay , isn’t actually an inspiration session—it’s just  that breathtaking. From the beautiful Bride’s gorgeous lace wedding dress and flawless hair and makeup to the pretty pastel color palette and stunning ceremony and reception spaces, this wedding is almost too good to be true. Do yourself a favor and see it all in The Vault now!

From Sonya Khegay … It was the last day of April and still very cold in the morning. The weather forecast wasn’t pleasing and no one expected that the sun would come out, but miracles happen and light rain gave way to the warm rays.

I love how all the details went together, you could feel the harmony in everything throughout the entire wedding day from the morning until the fireworks.

A gentle look of the bride, elegant but so airy and unique decor, the fresh and light atmosphere of early spring and, of course, true happiness in the eyes. My heart becomes so warm from these memories, it is always a pleasure to see the birth of a new family of two loving hearts.

You really can’t go wrong with simple: a beautiful Bride , perfectly pretty petals , loved ones all around. But add in an amazing firework show  to cap off the night and simple just became downright extraordinary. Captured by Lena Elisseva , with assistance by  Katya Butenko , this rustic Russian celebration is simply fantastic. See it all in the Vault right here !

From Lena Eliseeva Photo …  This cozy and warm summer wedding of gorgeous Natalia and Anton was in the middle of June. The young couple decided to organize their wedding themselves, and the day was very personal and touching. I am absolutely in love with rustic outdoor weddings, and this one is my favourite because of the free and easy atmosphere.

All the decor excluding the bride’s bouquet was made by a team of ten friends of the bride and groom. And it was charming – a light and beautiful arch, eco-style polygraphy and succulents, candy-bar with caramel apples and berries – sweet joys of summer.

At the end of ceremony the guests tossed up white handkerchiefs embroidered by Natalia’s own hands.

The most touching moment was the happy eyes of the groom’s grandmother, the most estimable person on the wedding. And the fireworks were a bright end to that beautiful day.

These photos from Lena Kozhina are so stunningly beautiful – as in you can’t help but stop and stare – it’s hard to believe it’s real life. But these pics are proof of this gorgeous Bride and her handsome Groom’s celebration at Moscow’s Fox Lodge , surrounded by vibrant colors and breathtaking blooms . Oh, and the idea of prepping for your Big Day outside in the sun ? Brilliant. See more bright ideas right here !

From Lena Kozhina … When we met with the couple for the first time, we immediately paid attention to Dima’s behavior towards Julia. There was a feeling of tenderness and awe, and we immediately wanted to recreate this atmosphere of love, care and warmth on their Big Day.

Later, when we had chosen a green meadow and an uncovered pavilion overlooking a lake as the project site, it only highlighted a light summer mood with colorful florals and a great number of natural woods. The name of the site is Fox Lodge and peach-orange color, as one of the Bride’s favorites, set the tone for the whole design – from the invitations, in which we used images of fox cubs to elements of serving guest tables and other decorative elements with the corresponding bright accents.
