Great yacht designs 6 – the Rozinante

rosinante sailboat

Francis L Herreshoff’s Rozinante is one of the famed small cruising yacht designs ever drawn. But is her lavish praise deserved?

Article reproduced in full from CB332

Midship accommodation ex Compleat Cruiser

F ew boats have earned such lavish praise as L Francis Herreshoff’s ‘canoe yawl’ Rozinante; L Francis himself wrote immodestly “you will find her a beautiful model” and elsewhere you’ll find her lauded as “one the most beautiful and graceful vessels ever designed” and “hypnotically beautiful”. At the risk of prompting outrage from her admirers, I’m not sure I’d go that far; certainly, the hull is very pretty (and better in photos than on paper), but while the original rig with her club gaffs may be practical, to my eye it’s nothing very special in the aesthetic department. He evidently returned to the design later in life; the original version was published in The Rudder and ‘The Compleat Cruiser’ (1956), but he published (posthumously) a prettier bermudan version (Design No. 98) in the 1973 ‘Sensible Cruising Designs’, by which time the hull was a fraction longer and deeper and had a lot more sail area.

Sail plan ex Compleat Cruiser

In ‘The Compleat Cruiser’ L Francis described her as a whaleboat type, ketch rigged cruiser, but in The Rudder he described her as “of a type that used to be described as canoe yawls”. That canoe yawls are not canoes (or necessarily yawls) is a truism; the consensus seems to be that they should be slim and small enough to row if necessary, double-ended, partly decked, have a mizzen, and if the accommodation is anything other than snug it won’t count. Albert Strange is often cited as the inventor of the breed, but more prosaically they seem to have evolved during the 1870s; Strange did much to popularise them with his artistic drawings and articles though, a tradition that L Francis followed.

Herreshoff also described Rozinante as “non-capsizeable” but I would suggest that potentially self-righting would be more accurate; no boat of this size is truly uncapsizeable, but she is very slim for her length and has a good ballast ratio (in most versions 50 per cent or more), so should come back up pretty readily one would imagine, assuming she doesn’t down-flood. The original had a long (8ft) cockpit which looks a nice space, but it wasn’t self-draining; and that would suggest her ideal milieu would be inshore or at best reasonably sheltered coastal or estuarial use rather than offshore. The cost of the decent cockpit with such a narrow boat is next to non-existent side decks, which with her low sheer will bring her crew into regular and intimate proximity with the water; which again suggests relatively sheltered waters would be her forte. In the same vein, the sail area at 265sq ft was originally pretty mean; with a sail area/displacement ratio of 129 she would often have been sluggish, despite her slim hull. Presumably reflecting that, the redrawn versions have 348sq ft (32.3m 2 ) and the SA/disp ratio jumps to a healthier 169 as a result; since nearly all the examples built follow the later rig plan it’s not surprising she has a reputation for scooting along pretty well.

Lines ex Compleat Cruiser

As an aside, it is surprising that such a renowned draughtsman as L Francis produced the published lines plan with some definite anomalies: have a look at where the first buttock crosses waterline 1 near station 20, for example; (the later version is much fairer). The general form of the hull is delightful though; L Francis was a fine proponent of double-enders and this is a sweet example. The very slim aft waterlines might cause a little tendency to hobby-horse in a chop, and make her sensitive to a cockpit full of crew, but then he designed her to be rowable and hence gave her those slim quarters. Given a decent pair of oars she will probably move along OK, but at three tons it would take a pretty determined crew to keep it up for any length of time or into breeze or tide.

Following canoe yawl tradition, the accommodation is comically snug (as Herreshoff demonstrates in the original illustration), but with her moderate draft and low coachroof that is inevitable; concentrate on enjoying the cockpit space. Her fixed keel makes her a potentially more capable pocket cruiser perhaps, but she is not truly shallow draught as a result.

The draught is necessary to compensate for the lack of beam, a feature predominantly related to being row-able, which confirms that fitting an inboard (which Herreshoff was volubly against here) would be largely missing the point.

There is a purity of intent about the design which is nicely mirrored in L Francis’ general style. The hull shape is determined overwhelmingly by the need to be able to row her, which in a three-ton, 28ft boat places a hard compromise on most other aspects. Putting the hyperbole on one side, Rozinante is clearly a highly focused design, which will suit a few people perfectly.

The Marc Lombard designed ROSINANTE of NOTIKA (now NEDSHIP) successfully combines maximum sailing experience with maximum comfort. ROSINANTE’s sleek hull, light displacement, strong rigging and stability enables her to change most people’s standards from drifting to real sailing by easily reaching average speeds of 14 knots under sail. She offers vast decks, a large, covered cockpit for “al fresco” dining and a huge range of watersports and leisure equipment. Her simple yet elegant interior was designed by Olivier Flahault to allow for incomparable space and comfort: the yacht has just three staterooms, a full width master with king-size bed, a double with queen-size bed and a twin. All staterooms have their own private en suite bathrooms. ROSINANTE was built for long-range cruising and with her highly experienced crew of five provides the ultimate vacation for the discerning charterer.

rosinante sailboat

Rozinante by L. F. Herreshoff

rosinante sailboat

his is one of the most popular small cruising boat designs, and with good reason. She features a relatively light and very sleek hull form compared to English canoe yawls, and her hull lines are regarded by many as some of the most beautiful ever drawn, in any genre. At 3’9” her draft is more than most canoe yawls of her size, giving her greater power to carry sail. She has a correspondingly large rig to push her along well in light air, as befits a boat that was originally intended to be engineless. A great performer in a wide range of wind strengths, she is regarded as an exceptionally sweet-sailing boat. For cruising, she features a snug cabin just large enough to provide honest sleeping and seating comfort for two people. Her large, deep cockpit offers unusually comfortable day sailing for a crowd, and is especially safe and secure-feeling, making it ideal for timid passengers or small children. With a boom tent the cockpit can become part of the overnight accommodations.   The ketch rig allows many tricks of balancing and maneuvering, which are part of the fun of sailing without an auxiliary, and allows a quick reduction of sail while retaining full control, through dropping the mainsail while retaining the jib and mizzen—a reassuring thing for a family or a singlehander, in a sudden squall.

Like all canoe yawls she is intended to be rowed, when there is no wind or when maneuvering in close quarters, and it is surprising how a boat like this will in fact move along quite well under oars in still water. For purists the simplicity, economy, silence, and cleanliness of the oars will be part of the idea. It is also possible to fit a small auxiliary engine, and many boats have been built this way. For one of the best design commentaries ever written, see Herreshoff’s decription of   Rozinante in his book, Sensible Cruising Designs.

Rozinante (Herreshoff)

Rozinante (Herreshoff) is a 27 ′ 11 ″ / 8.5 m monohull sailboat designed by L. Francis Herreshoff and built by South Coast Seacraft Co. and Kenner Boat Company starting in 1952.

Drawing of Rozinante (Herreshoff)

Rig and Sails

Auxilary power, accomodations, calculations.

The theoretical maximum speed that a displacement hull can move efficiently through the water is determined by it's waterline length and displacement. It may be unable to reach this speed if the boat is underpowered or heavily loaded, though it may exceed this speed given enough power. Read more.

Classic hull speed formula:

Hull Speed = 1.34 x √LWL

Max Speed/Length ratio = 8.26 ÷ Displacement/Length ratio .311 Hull Speed = Max Speed/Length ratio x √LWL

Sail Area / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the power of the sails relative to the weight of the boat. The higher the number, the higher the performance, but the harder the boat will be to handle. This ratio is a "non-dimensional" value that facilitates comparisons between boats of different types and sizes. Read more.

SA/D = SA ÷ (D ÷ 64) 2/3

  • SA : Sail area in square feet, derived by adding the mainsail area to 100% of the foretriangle area (the lateral area above the deck between the mast and the forestay).
  • D : Displacement in pounds.

Ballast / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the stability of a boat's hull that suggests how well a monohull will stand up to its sails. The ballast displacement ratio indicates how much of the weight of a boat is placed for maximum stability against capsizing and is an indicator of stiffness and resistance to capsize.

Ballast / Displacement * 100

Displacement / Length Ratio

A measure of the weight of the boat relative to it's length at the waterline. The higher a boat’s D/L ratio, the more easily it will carry a load and the more comfortable its motion will be. The lower a boat's ratio is, the less power it takes to drive the boat to its nominal hull speed or beyond. Read more.

D/L = (D ÷ 2240) ÷ (0.01 x LWL)³

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds.
  • LWL: Waterline length in feet

Comfort Ratio

This ratio assess how quickly and abruptly a boat’s hull reacts to waves in a significant seaway, these being the elements of a boat’s motion most likely to cause seasickness. Read more.

Comfort ratio = D ÷ (.65 x (.7 LWL + .3 LOA) x Beam 1.33 )

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds
  • LOA: Length overall in feet
  • Beam: Width of boat at the widest point in feet

Capsize Screening Formula

This formula attempts to indicate whether a given boat might be too wide and light to readily right itself after being overturned in extreme conditions. Read more.

CSV = Beam ÷ ³√(D / 64)

NEPENTHE28' Herreshoff Rozinante 1972

This vessel is no longer on the market.

Perhaps the ultimate Gentleman's day sailor. The Rozinante class has remained one of L.F. Herreshoff's most beloved designs. Her relatively light displacement and narrow beam make her efficient and quick under sail. The Rozinante's stout whaleboat like hull and moderate sail plan make her a very secure and able boat even when the weather pipes up.

"L. Francis himself wrote somewhat immodestly you will find her a beautiful model and elsewhere you'll find her lauded as one the most beautiful and graceful vessels ever designed and hypnotically beautiful."

NEPENTHE is the name for a fictional drug from Homer's Odyssey for banishing grief or trouble from a person's mind.

Rozinante Project

  • Add to quote

Hello Everyone, I am in the process of gutting and rebuilding the interior of a 1966, fiberglass, Cheoy Lee built, Herreshoff Rozinante. I am attaching a picture to show the current condition down below. I would like to hear of any advice, tips or criticism of my plans. So far I have gutted and ground off 90% of the old paint and have knocked down some ugly fiberglass lumps. I plan to use a lot of wood to give the feel of a wooden boat. I am thinking of paneling the overhead with .25 inch beadboard that will be glued in place with epoxy puddy. I chose this option because of how uneven the glass surface is and that it would appear like planks running fore and aft. I will then run perpendicular beams to add support and again to appear like a wooden craft. The area where the windows are will be wood, possibly a veneer, which will also be epoxied in place. The rest of the ceiling area will be painted white with a one part polyurethane. We have a Sardine woodstove on order from the San Juan Islands that should be arriving in a couple months, which will be taken into consideration when designing the cabinets on the aft, starboard side of the cabin. A seat will fit into the aft, port side of the cabin that will be at a perfect angle to sit and smoke a pipe or look over charts. Most of our plans have been inspired by LFH himself right down to the cedar bucket / head, which we recently acquired. What recommendations do any of you have for materials for building the cabinets and seat framing, as well as the veneer for the window area (By the way, what is the proper term for that location?)? On the cabinets, I am thinking of marine plywood, possibly beadboard centers on the door and drawers and some sort of fancy wood for the trim work. I realize teak is desirable for the trim, but would like to use a more sustainably and locally (this continent) harvested wood. I also plan to build a sliding hatch cover. Please contact me with your ideas, etc. Much thanks. -Bryan

I really love these boats. Always have.....The Rozinante's are one of my favorite L.F. Herreshoff designs. The sail remarkably well for their era and wetted surface. Unfortunately, the Choey Lee fiberglass versions were not the best renditions of these boats. The secret to the sailing ability and seaworthiness of the wooden Rozinante's was that they were remarkably light in weight and fairly heavily ballasted. Their light weight came from their light weight planking (typically cedar on white oak) and minimalist interiors. The fiberglass hulls and decks on the Choey Lee versions were much heavier than the wooden versions and so were their interiors much heavier. Therefore the Cheoy Lee's used much lighter ballasting so that the boats would float on thier lines but where also a lot more tender. Some of the later Cheoy Lee Roz's even had concrete and steel ballasting aggrevating the problem with this low density ballasting. Even with the reduced weight ballasting the glass boats sat pretty deep in the water compared to the wooden ones. My point is that whatever you do on this boat, keep it as light as you know how. Adding a wooden overhead, cabin sides, and the like, while very attractive may be a poor solution. Try to use woods like port orford or western red cedar for the interior since these are light weight species. Avoid using large quanties of epoxy putty as the weight adds up quickly. Try to keep the weight low as the Cheoy Lee boats have a very high vertical center of gravity compared to the wooden ones. In other words think carefully about where you put weight and how much weight you add back into the boat, and you will end up with a wonderful boat all around. Add weight carelessly and you may end up with a nice looking boat that sails miserably and is dangerous in heavy going. Respectfully, Jeff

Thank you greatly for your advice. I will take your thoughts into consideration as I work through this project, I will post photos of my progress and will surely have more questions as the journey evolves. I may reconsider the bead board overhead previously mentioned and might instead do some more sanding and just paint it and glue up some orford cedar beams.

May I suggest an alternative? 1/4" is heavy and glassing it in is heavier. Perhaps if you glassed in "bolt receivers" every foot or so that allowed a half-inch standoff. Glue in closed-cell foam, and then glue and screw veneer or battens over that. Make channels for wiring as needed...a little planning and a couple of "dummy runs" will allow for new mast gear, lighting, etc. This might make a lot more sense than 1/4" panels, and the foam will make it quieter and cooler down below.

Maybe I'll just cut off the overhead and build a new wood one from scratch. Probably less work, less glue in the eye and would likely end up being lighter weight.

If it's a solid glass coach house and it's in good shape, I would keep it, if only because of its strength and for the access to backing plates, etc. If this is just for "looks", consider it just as you would a false or dropped ceiling. You could even glue battens onto the roughened surface, and screw countersunk screws into those.
