Though there is still some debate, the length of the yacht is the typical differentiator between a motor yacht (50ft to 80 or 100ft), a superyacht (80 or 100ft to about 200ft), and a megayacht is generally 200ft and greater. All megayachts are superyachts, but not all superyachts are megayachts. Superyachts can be power or sail, or motorsailers that run on both power and sail.

They can be monohulled or multihulled, with multiple decks, and have quarters for lots of crew! They can be highly customized yachts, or semi-custom and production builds, though the larger yachts are almost always built-to-order bespoke vessels and built by well-established shipyards. A subset of the superyacht is the expedition/explorer yacht, also known as sport utility vessels. Although they share many of the same design features and capabilities of superyachts, such as long-range cruising, a luxurious interior, and ability to garage a lot of “toys” and tenders, they are built with the features needed to fulfill their special purpose. SUV and Explorer/Expedition yachts are typically built with a full-displacement hull and deep-Vee draft for the highest seaworthiness to provide safety and comfort in extreme weather conditions and in remote locations. They often have ice-class certifications for polar expeditions, and some have been used for scientific research expeditions. Superyacht builder, Amels’ SeaXplorer and Oceanco’s ESQUEL are recently built expedition superyachts. Feadship has also recently built a modern expedition yacht and Abeking & Rasmussen’s expedition yacht features a SWATH hull (small waterplane area twin hull), as owners seek greater adventure in more remote parts.

Another major trend in superyacht design and engineering is for sustainability and reducing environmental impacts. Most superyacht builders today have developed and implemented fuel efficient hybrid propulsion systems, such as diesel-electric, sail-electric, solar power with engine shut-down periods, along with reduction in facility emissions, developing hybrid methanol fuel cells that emit steam, reducing noise pollution, and implementing waste recycling, as a few examples. Many owners, designers, and builders are concerned with the sustainability of natural materials used to create the beautiful interiors, especially rare woods, and are utilizing high-tech architectural films (such as 3M™’s Di-Noc™ Architectural Finishes) that are exquisitely realistic or fantastical surface wraps that are highly versatile, easily installed, reparable, and sanitizable. The owner’s suite is typically palatial and private, and located on the main deck.

The exteriors are often designed for privacy, especially the megayachts, where the voluminous interior space features opulent salons, entertaining and dining areas with wet bars, magnificent accommodations, and more as specified by the owner. Some display the owner’s valuable art collections, have swimming pools with waterfalls or glass bottoms or can transform to a dance floor for DJ dance parties, spas, Jacuzzis, saunas, bowling alleys, paddle tennis courts, fitness centers, game rooms, screening rooms and other theatrical entertainment systems, heliports, luxury tenders, sportfish boats, submersibles, jet skis, scuba equipment, stern beach club/cabana, side balconies and tender garages, and much more. Some have a shadow support vessel for extra crew, provisions, extra guest accommodations, etc. and security escort vessels. They are optimized with the most sophisticated electronics and systems, and redundant equipment and machinery to support lengthy stays at sea.

Some superyachts are available for charter, offering the sumptuous lifestyle of the world’s wealthiest elite. Miami, St Barts (where New Year celebrations are legendary), the Azores and Balearic Islands, Sardinia, the Maldives, French and Italian Rivieras, Greek Isles, and the Adriatic are just a few popular destination ports.

Turkey has a long tradition of maritime construction and is especially known for its wooden motorsailer gulets that are very popular for coastal charters with their vast deck space, interior facilities, and fuel efficiency, able to run on both sail and diesel power, though they don’t truly fall in the private luxury superyacht category. The World’s First Hydrogen-Powered Superyacht Sets Sail

Traveling the deep blue just got a lot greener. Feadship, a Dutch shipyard, just launched what it claims is the world’s first hydrogen-powered superyacht. Dubbed Project 821, the 290-foot boat left the company’s Amsterdam shipyard on May 4, a monumental achievement following years of yacht concepts touted with the eco-friendly technology . “The aim has been to develop a new, clean technology not just for this project, but for the world,” said Jan-Bart Verkuyl, Feadship director and CEO of Royal Van Lent, in a statement.

Designing and developing Project 821 was a five-year undertaking and part of the Feadship’s research into fossil-free fuel options for boats. The ship is partly powered by hydrogen fuel cells, which generate power through a chemical reaction rather than combustion. Many cars make use of this technology, but this is a first for superyachts. “The value of the research as well the development of class and flag safety regulations for an entirely new type of energy generation is an advancement we are proud to have made available to all,” Verkuyl added.

The hydrogen-powered superyacht was designed by RWD , a firm located in Hampshire, England. The owner’s deck is inspired by a luxury apartment, and features two bedrooms, twin bathrooms and dressing rooms, a gym, two offices, and a living room. On the lower deck, bookshelves wrap around a statement-making staircase in addition to a number of niches designed for small moments, such as board games or enjoying a cup of coffee. This is in addition to a library, stateroom, and sea terrace dining room. The interiors make use of a natural and light color palette crafted from organic materials such as leather, marble , and rattan .

Project 821 showcases a number of green advancements to make yachting more eco-friendly.

“RWD is immensely proud to have been involved in such a forward-thinking project,” Charlie Baker, a director at RWD, said. “We hope it inspires other projects to think differently in the future.”

Hydrogen requires heavy-duty storage tanks, which add significant weight to the boat and demand additional space. Though Project 821 is equipped to hold four tons of hydrogen and 16 fuel cells, it is not enough to fully power the vessel for long journeys. In cases where green energy alone is not enough, the boat is also fashioned with two generators. These combusts hydrotreated vegetable oil, which is a diesel-like fuel but doesn’t require fossil resources.

The boat is currently for sale through Edmiston, a superyacht sale and charter firm. “The brief was to build the greenest and most environmentally advanced yacht ever built, without compromise. It was a huge challenge, but one that the team has embraced and delivered on,” Jamie Edmiston, CEO of Edmiston, added. “The yacht we see today, designed by RWD and built by Feadship, is without doubt the best yacht ever built.”

The Resorts Gal Guide to Disney’s Stormalong Bay (With Photos)

Stormalong Bay is the tremendous feature pool area at Disney’s Beach and Yacht Club Resorts. A day spent here might be the best part of your Walt Disney World vacation.

We planned our first stay at Disney’s Beach Club many years ago and fell in love with the entire Epcot Resorts Area during that stay. But what surprised us most was how much we enjoyed the massive pool. We found ourselves wanting to spend more and more time at Stormalong Bay than anywhere else.

On our last vacation day, we completely blew off our park plans and spent the entire day (and evening) at Stormalong Bay. I picked up a paperback novel in the hotel’s gift shop and found a place in the shade to read while my son played with other children at the pool.

Even though the day consisted of small things, like reading a book, it’s still one of my favorite memories. We both know that sometimes the little things become the best memories.

For some, that might be helping your child build a sandcastle at the sand bottom pool. That is until they meet a few pool friends. Soon after, you can return to reading that book. Meanwhile, the children will conspire to meet back at the pool the next day, oblivious to your vacation plans.

Whatever it is, Stormalong Bay has a way of making you want to linger a little longer than expected. Below, we’ll discuss everything you need to know about Stormalong Bay. Additionally, we’ve included a video with clips of various pool areas toward the bottom of this article.

Refurbishment Announcement for Stormalong Bay : From January 2025 through June 2025, Stormalong Bay and Shipwreck Pool at Disney’s Yacht and Beach Club Resorts will be closed for routine maintenance. Guests may see or hear construction work during daytime hours. (This was originally scheduled to end in May of 2025.)

Pool Details for Planning a Day at Stormalong Bay

Stormalong Bay is more of a mini water park than a pool. The pool area is over three acres and holds 750,000 gallons of water. Those areas include a lazy river, multiple whirlpool spas or hot tubs, sand bottom pool areas, waterfalls, a waterslide, a kiddie pool, a sand bar, and a shipwreck, among other things.

It’s important to be aware that Stormalong Bay has deep areas. The various pools range from zero-entry to 8′ (feet) deep. That 8′ deep area is limited to a portion of the lazy river. However, some other pool areas transition from shallow to 4′ and 5′ (feet) deep.

The photo below shows a shallow pool for children at the far end of the pool. A sand bar sits in the center of the pool, where children spend hours building sandcastles. However, looking toward the photo’s center, you’ll notice a hot tub. Then, on the opposite side, steps lead into the lazy river, where it’s immediately 6′ deep and soon after 8′ deep.

Complimentary lifejackets are provided for anyone who needs them. Additionally, lifeguards are stationed across the entire pool deck.

Stormalong Bay is open daily from 10:00 a.m. until 11:00 p.m. during the busier times of the year. Guests of either Disney’s Yacht or Beach Club can access the pool during regular operating hours.

Wristbands are provided at the gate, allowing guests to come and go from the pool. If you want prime seating (AKA by the pool, in the shade, or a table and chairs), you’ll want to rope-drop the pool when it opens.

On our last stay (in mid-August), guests lined up as early as 9:30 a.m. at both pool gates to secure seats. While plenty of chairs are provided at the pool, it’s often one of those scenarios where people throw their items or a towel down and then mysteriously disappear.

Pool hours might be reduced depending on several factors. For instance, when we stayed at the Yacht Club in January, the pool was only open until 10:00 p.m. due to fewer crowds. (We had no trouble finding seats during this time of year.)

Another instance is if you visit on a colder day. The pool might not open until the temperature increases to a certain degree, or if it’s exceptionally cold, it might remain temporarily closed.

However, the pools at Walt Disney World, including Stormalong Bay, are heated to 82 degrees year-round. So when it’s cooler outside, the pool will often feel pleasant, especially in the evenings.

The Sand Bottom Pool

Most of Stormalong Bay’s pool area has a sand bottom. This is soothing, unlike the typical abrasive concrete bottom pools that leave knees scraped.

Stairs in the center of Stormalong Bay lead up to a private alcove.

Here, you’ll find two separate hot tubs nestled among the rocks.

It was so hot in August that the pool water felt like a hot tub. So, no one was using the whirlpools. However, during our stay last winter, they were constantly packed.

Waterfalls cascade down the rocks on both sides of the hot tub area.

Here are a few more photos of this area from various angles.

One side of this area adjoins the lazy river. A rope acts as a divider between the pool area and the lazy river.

Here is a view looking back from the lazy river.

The pool stretches linearly on the opposite side (toward the right). A volleyball net made from pool noodles provides an excellent place to get up a game.

This area is where the afternoon activities for children take place. Those with children (who want to participate in the pool activities) will want to grab a spot on this end of the pool early.

Unfortunately, the pool deck in this area is narrow, so it can be difficult to find a seat. You can tell in the photo below that most of the chairs under umbrellas are already in use. This photo was taken within 15-20 minutes of the pool opening!

Every afternoon, from around 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m., recreation cast members provide entertainment. They play pool games like Disney trivia and guess that tune. You might be surprised at how much everyone enjoys it.

As the day shifts to dusk, cast members invite everyone to campfire activities like roasting complimentary marshmallows and watching Movies Under the Stars. Both resorts have a recreation calendar detailing the nightly movie and other specifics.

Past this portion of the pool, the area continues to Bubblin’ Bay and a lagoon with whirling waters.

You’ll find the slide’s exit at the end of this area.

The Lazy River

At the opposite end, we find the lazy river, the deepest pool area. It has several entrances. But you’ll want to remember that some of those entrances lead into 5′ to 8′ deep areas.

It’s not a large lazy river. You can see its entire circular shape in the photo below.

Hurricane Hanna’s , the poolside bar and quick service, sits directly behind the lazy river.

A few clear inner tubes are available for guests to use. Naturally, the river does have a bit of a current that keeps you moving. However, on our last stay, less than ten were available. A good deal of guests were complaining about the lack of tubes.

In case you’re wondering, most of these photos were taken from a large deck on the Crescent Lake side of the pool.

Additional seating is available at the top. However, like everywhere else, it can fill up quickly.

A few coveted spots in the shade are available if you get there early enough. A pool table was also present.

Stormalong Bay Water Slide (The Flying Jib)

From the upper deck, you can see the Stormalong Bay slide. It’s one of the best waterslides at the Disney Resorts . Called The Flying Jib, the slide is in a shipwreck across a walkway from the pool.

The shipwreck sits on the shores of Crescent Lake, so guests have to cross the walkway to get to the slide. The tunnel portion of the slide extends across the walkway from the ship back to the pool area.

Once you cross the path, you’ll climb into the ship and up the spiral staircase to access the slide.

It’s a speedy slide that almost always has a long line!

As far as the shipwreck goes, this is the same area where the nightly Movies Under the Stars are held. Cast members inflate a projection screen in front of the chairs sitting on the beach.

Kiddie Pool (The Shipwreck Pool)

Most guests have no clue that an additional kiddie pool sits inside the shipwreck. If you never took the time to check out the area, you’d have no idea it existed.

It has a separate kiddie water slide!

No sand is involved at this pool. It’s a fun area.

Sand Bar Kiddie Pool

The other kiddie pool is back on the Yacht Club side of Stormalong Bay. This large wading pool has a sand bottom and a massive mound of sand in its center.

Additionally, Stormalong Bay’s third hot tub resides in this area.

A word of warning: After spending time in this area, young children will probably always remember this trip to the Beach Club. They will always ask to return to that place with the sand pool.

They will not want to leave when it’s time to prepare for your dinner reservation. And if you take them to the pool early on during your vacation, they will continuously ask when you’re going to the pool–even when you’re in the parks. Can you blame them?

Toward the back of the sand bar pool, the area forms another lagoon that’s approximately 3.5′ deep.

It’s a pretty area that looks out to Crescent Lake and Disney’s Boardwalk.

Cabanas at Stormalong Bay

Four cabanas are available to rent at Stormalong Bay. These cabanas are available at 60 days out and sell out quickly. They come with the following amenities:

• A dedicated cast member providing service to the cabanas.
• Cocktail Service
• Ceiling Fan
• Padded furniture, including chairs and a couch
• Television with cable access
• Charging Outlets/USB Ports
• A mini refrigerator stocked with complimentary sodas and water.
• Fruit Basket/Dessert Tray
• A Cabinet Safe

Towels, Lockers, and Changing Areas at Stormalong Bay

Before we wrap things up, I wanted to share a few other details that might help you plan time at the pool. For instance, towels are provided at Stormalong Bay. So you shouldn’t need to pack them. Guests can get as many as they need throughout the day.

Additionally, a locker area is available for guests who might need to store a few items while in the pool.

Restrooms are available immediately behind the pool area.

When you enter this covered area to the restrooms, you’ll notice a sign that says showers on the far right-hand side. This area leads to showers and changing areas for men and women. Inside, you’ll find a couple of showers, towels, a bench, and a place to hang items.

Toiletries like body wash, shampoo, and conditioner are available in the shower stall. This area provides a wonderful place to change or freshen up if you have a late flight on your check-out day. You might also use this area to change into your swimsuit if your room isn’t ready on arrival.

Disney’s Yacht Club Resort offers guests amazing amenities, an incredible location and numerous dining options. There is so much to do here, so the planDisney panelists recommend including at least one resort day in your itinerary when vacationing at this Disney Resorts Collection hotel.

Transportation is a breeze at this resort. While buses are available for guests to venture to theme parks, water parks and Disney Springs, Disney’s Yacht Club Resort is also walking distance or a short boat ride to EPCOT and Disney’s Hollywood Studios.

planDisney Tip : Don’t forget Disney Skyliner can also be accessed at EPCOT International Gateway nearby, giving guests even more choices for transportation near this resort.

A variety of room types await guests at Disney’s Yacht Club Resort. Rooms with standard, water, garden, and wood views are available and can sleep up to five adults. Suites and Club Level access are also available and can sleep up to six adults while the Turret Suite can accommodate up to eight adults.

With dining options like Ale & Compass , Yachtsman Steakhouse , The Market at Ale & Compass , and Crew’s Cup Lounge there are choices for every palate when mealtime rolls around. And let’s not forget Hurricane Hanna’s Waterside Bar & Grill , Beaches & Cream Soda Shop and Cape May Café .

On to recreation and one of the most beloved pools on Disney property. Stormalong Bay is a 750,000 gallon, beachside wonderland that offers guests three acres of aquatic fun. Take a swirl around the lazy river or put your toes in the sand … inside the pool with a sand-bottom! Plus, Stormalong Bay is also home to one of the highest hotel waterslides at Walt Disney World Resort, and it can be found at the top of the life-size shipwreck replica.

If pool time to you means a quiet afternoon soaking up the rays, there are also three leisure pools you can enjoy at Disney’s Yacht Club Resort, and the neighboring sister-resort, Disney’s Beach Club Resort.

planDisney Tip: Book a poolside cabana and spend the day lounging and enjoying cocktails or munchies from Hurricane Hanna’s Waterside Bar & Grill or mobile ordering a delicious to-go meal from Ale & Compass Restaurant.

Poolside Cabanas Now at Yacht & Beach Club Resorts

Visiting Walt Disney World is all about the magic! Many guests take advantage of staying in the resort of their dreams and enjoying every amenity they offer. Disney World Now Taking Reservations for Yacht and Beach Club Poolside Cabanas

Just a few weeks ago we gave you a peek into construction of cabanas at the Yacht and Beach Club Resorts’ shared pool, Stormalong Bay . This stellar pool (arguably one of the best on property) is a destination for guests at the resorts, and now a day poolside can be experienced in comfort! Rentals are now open for the cabanas for dates beginning March 17! 

Yacht and Beach Club Cabanas

The cabanas will provide services and amenities such as padded furniture (including chairs and a couch), dedicated cast members, towels, a lockable cabinet, a mounted television with cable access, and charging outlets . All the creature comforts — and then some!

For cabana dwellers looking for snacks, services include a mini-fridge stocked with complimentary soda and water, cocktail service, and a complimentary fruit tray.

The cabanas are relatively neutral in design, the styling blending with the Yacht and Beach Club colors of sea blues and gray. Retractable curtains provide privacy and shade when needed.

Plenty of lounge chairs remain arranged around the deck for pool guests.

The cabanas are only available to guests of the Yacht and Beach Club Resorts, and they can be rented by called 407-WDW-PLAY. Reservations can be half-day (with prices starting at $149 for 10 AM – 2 PM or 3 – 7 PM;) or full-day (with prices starting at $249 for 10 AM – 7 PM). Can’t help but feel the cabanas will take away from the spacious open feeling of the pool. Not to mention blocking views because you know they will be situated in the most prime locations. Seems like Disney is taking a family affordable resort and turning it into a snooty hotel. I guess I will find out in September if we need to find another vacation resort.

@Tony- I am not sure I would call the Yatch and Beach an affordable family resort. It is one of the higher priced deluxe resorts. The high price of the cabanas certainly don’t make things cheaper, but it isn’t a cheap place to begin with. That said, I am sorry this addition has soured your view of what it sounds like used to be your go to place.

I’ve reserved my cabana for June! I’m so excited to not have to stalk beach chairs and have some built in shade for our sensitive skin…plus with a toddler it will help to have a cast member to help with ordering food. This will be awesome!

Disney's Yacht Club Resort Guest Rooms to be Refurbished in 2025

Guest rooms at Disney’s Yacht Club Resort will undergo a refurbishment in early 2025.

Disney’s Yacht Club Resort Refurbishment

An announcement on the resort’s landing page reads:

From January through May 2025, some Guest rooms at Disney’s Yacht Club Resort will be under refurbishment. While Guests may see or hear construction work during daytime hours, most Resort hotel amenities will remain available.

Note that the announcement says only “some” guest rooms will be refurbished.

We previously reported that Yacht Club’s feature pool, Stormalong Bay, will be closed for refurbishment from January to June 2025. The pool’s bridges were refurbished in 2022.

In the past few years, the lobby and exterior of Disney’s Yacht Club were also refurbished.

The windy Russian autumn weather might be a little bit tricky for sailing, but it doesn’t stop brave yachtsmen from all over the world from flocking to Russian capital in the beginning of September when the Moscow Yacht Show commences. The main Russian Yacht exhibition gathers professional and amateur yacht lovers together under the wing of The Royal Yacht Club.

This year it took place for a fourth time already. The exhibition is considered the principal event on the sporting and social calendar. The Moscow Yacht Show 2010 united in one area three of the largest Russian yachts distributors: Ultramarine, Nordmarine and Premium Yachts.

A wide range of yachts were on display for a week. An exhibition showcased yachts both from Russian manufacturers and world famous brands: Azimut, Princess, Ferretti, Pershing, Riviera, Doral, Linssen, etc.

It was a real feast for seafarers as visitors of the show had a unique chance not only to take a look at the newest superyachts before they hit the market, but also to evaluate their driving advantages during the test drive. The show provided an excellent opportunity for yacht enthusiasts to choose and buy a new boat for the next season.

The event started with the grandiose gala evening. It included grand dinner, the concert and professional awards ceremony for achievements in Russian yachting industry. The guests also enjoyed the annual regatta.

Special guest Paolo Vitelli, Azimut Benetti Group president, opened the evening.

Next year organizers assured guests they would bring more yachts, the scale of which will even make oligarch Roman Abramovich envious. Sounds very promising indeed.

The game of golf is a sport that requires passion and expertise. It is also part of a culture that considers this pastime a synonym of social prestige and exclusivity. In recent years, the new Russian elite has turned to golf as a vehicle of integration in the era of globalization. CYC offers a variety of summer programs for junior age (13 – 18) boys and girls. CYC membership is not required to enroll. We have programs suited for all juniors with an interest in rowing from those wishing to try the sport for the first time to those training for national competitions.

CALIFORNIA YACHT CLUB

Founded originally in 1922 by yachtsmen including Charles Hathaway and Frank Garbutt, the California Yacht Club's first clubhouse was built in Wilmington, CA in Los Angeles' inner harbor (berths nos. 192 & 193), just opposite Terminal Island. Close by were the yards of renowned yacht builders Wilmington Boat Works and Fellows & Stewart (second location). In the club's inaugural year, member yachtsmen formed the first Star class fleet on the Pacific coast. Involved in all aspect of the sport, the club has encouraged a variety of pleasure boating, first in Los Angeles Harbor, and now in Santa Monica Bay.

Over the years CYC has been the club for numerous prominent yachtsmen including Merritt Adamson, Pierpont Davis, Roy E. Disney, J. Paul Getty, Samuel K. Rindge, William Stewart, James Kilroy and navigator extraodinaire, Ben Mitchell. Movie mogul Cecil B. DeMille once served as a trustee of the club and donated a gold cup for powerboat racing. Comedy film producers Al Christie and Hal Roach were both deeply involved in club activities in the twenties and thirties.

Power boating has always been a part of the club's mission along with sailing and rowing. The first CYC powerboat regatta was run in 1922 and the winner was none less than the famous Gar Wood in his Harmsworth Trophy winner Miss America. CYC's Catalina Challenge race for powerboats has been run annually since 1922.

A fire on Thanksgiving Day, 1930 severely damaged the original clubhouse although the heroic efforts of some members saved all of the trophies.

In 1932, several CYC members figured prominently in the sailing events at the Los Angeles Olympic Games. Owen Churchill, inventor of the SwimFin, won the gold medal in the Eight-Metre Class with Angelita.

Unfortunately, the club was forced to relinquish its key location in the East Basin to the Coast Guard for the war effort in 1941. A dormant period followed.

With the development of the long-awaited Marina Del Rey in the early 1960s, the club reformed in '63 and elected Fritz Overton, Commodore in 1923, as head of the "new" club. In 1966, they opened the modern clubhouse and marina facility that is their home today. The radial design of the building allows sweeping panoramic views of the marina.

The California Yacht Club is owned by the Hathaway family, owners of the Los Angeles Athletic Club. The annual "Great Catalina to Marina del Rey Rowing and Paddling Event" pays tribute to Charles Hathaway's row in 1976 from Catalina Island to the club on his 50th birthday.

The unique combination of private ownership and annually elected flag officers has worked well to establish California Yacht Club as one of the outstanding clubs in the nation.

Cabanas can accommodate up to six people, and are located on the Yacht Club side of Stormalong Bay. There is a private cabana entrance, and cast members who are devoted entirely to cabana guests are available. You can check in for your cabana approximately 15 minutes before your scheduled time. You are advised to bring photo ID.

Cost of Cabana Rentals at Disney World. When we called to check the price of cabanas for 2024, we were quoted an average price of $350.00 per day plus tax for all three resorts. This is a significant price difference from the $318.00 we paid (including tax) only two years ago. Disney World's resort cabanas can be reserved at 60 days out.

Pool Hours. Stormalong Bay is open daily from 10:00 a.m. until 11:00 p.m. during the busier times of the year. Guests of either Disney's Yacht or Beach Club can access the pool during regular operating hours. Wristbands are provided at the gate, allowing guests to come and go from the pool.

Roman shipwrecks, bioluminescent turtles and other amazing discoveries made by superyachts

Superyachts have always had incredible potential for scientific research. Features that are native to superyacht design – including transoceanic ranges, air-conditioned interiors and tender storage – can actually serve a dual purpose. And owners are catching on. In the past decade or so, a number of superyachts have made meaningful contributions to the global archives, whether that's discovering a new species or uncovering centuries-old relics.

Builder : Lürssen Length : 126.2m What did she discover? : The wreck of one of the world's largest battleships

At the top of the list is, of course, the indomitable Octopus . Under the ownership of the late Paul Allen – the co-founder of Microsoft and the son of a World War II veteran – the superyacht has contributed to historical records several times. She retrieved the bell of HMS Hood, a British battlecruiser sunk by German forces in 1941 and also served as the staging vessel for James Cameron's record-breaking solo dive to the Mariana Trench. 

But her most incredible discovery of all was the Musashi , an imperial Japanese Navy battleship believed to be the world's largest – rivalled only by her sistership, Yamato. Allied forces sunk the Musashi during World War II's largest naval battle, the Battle of Leyte Gulf in 1944. More than 1,000 members of the ship's 2,399-person crew were killed as a result.

In March 2015, a team of researchers (and Octopus ) ended the decades-long mystery of Musashi' s final resting place. The wreckage was uncovered by an autonomous underwater vehicle (AUV) which had been programmed to sweep a sonar sensor along the undersea slopes of the Sibuyan Sea in the Philippines, where the ship was roughly predicted to have sunk. One kilometre below the surface, the AUV made the discovery.

"Mr. Allen has been searching for the Musashi for more than eight years," read a statement on Paul Allen's website. "Its discovery will not only help fill in the narrative of WWII's Pacific theatre, but bring closure to the families of those lost."

Alucia (now Odyssey)

Builder : Auroux Length : 55.8m What did she discover? : The first video footage of a giant squid

In June 2012, Alucia was the base of operations in the search for the Architeuthis dux , also known as the giant squid. A team of researchers set sail from Sagami Bay and underwent a six-week expedition around the Ogasawara Islands – 550 miles south of Tokyo and where zoologist Tsunemi Kubodera had captured some rare still pictures of the species.

The superyacht was equipped with a fleet of Triton Submarines, whose infrared and low light cameras were uniquely suited to the near-crushing darkness of the giant squid's natural habitat.

Fellow scientists Steve O'Shea and Edith Widder both made the descent but ultimately, it was Kubodera who captured the elusive species on film. This is credited to his decision to turn off everything electronic in the sub – including the temperature control system – and aim his camera at a diamond squid he had dangled as bait.

The mission was funded by Japan’s Broadcasting corporation NHK, Japan Agency for Marine-Earth Science and Technology (JAMSTEC) and the Discovery Channel. A documentary on the expedition, Monster Squid: The Giant is Real , was aired on the Discovery Channel in January 2013. It was the first documentary to show full-motion video footage of a living giant squid in its natural habitat.

Builder : Vitters Length : 36.9m What did she discover? : A bioluminescent turtle

Unlike the previous two entries, Dardanella 's discovery was entirely serendipitous. The group of scientists had moored near Nugu Island in the Solomon Islands to film biofluorescence in small sharks and coral reefs. But on 31 July 2015, marine biologists David Gruber and Markus Reymann discovered something unprecedented. 

"They noticed a 'bright red-and-green spaceship' approaching them in the water during a night dive," read a statement released by TBA21–Academy, who funded the expedition. "Totally unpredicted, the discovery happened when the turtle swam into the camera's view. The pair were diving with a special blue light that acts as a fluorescent excitor with many organisms, transforming the undersea at night into a seemingly psychedelic underworld."

This was the first bioluminiscent reptile ever discovered and recorded – all the more exceptional, as the hawksbill sea turtle was and remains a critically endangered species. According to Reymann, the special blue light that had been so pivotal to locating the turtle had been "miraculously repaired" by Dardanella 's engineer just a few hours earlier.

Builder : Feadship Length : 44.7m What did she discover? : A Roman shipwreck and a rare species of red coral

In October 2019, an expedition organised by Cookson Adventures deployed a number of submersibles from the superyacht Harle in and around the Gulf of Naples. Their most remarkable discovery was a pristine population of Coralium ruburn , located approximately 200 metres beneath an underwater cliff face in Sant'Angelo. This rare, centuries-old red coral was historically pillaged for use in jewellery, with untouched colonies consequently being few and far between.

The mission, organised by  Cookson Adventures , also uncovered a Roman shipwreck and its spilled cargo off the coast of Capri. Specifically, a collection of amphorae – ancient ceramic vases used to store oil, wine, milk or grain.

"These deeper dives offer a glimpse into how Mediterranean communities were in the past," said Dr. Nuria Teixido of Stazione Zoologica Anton Dohrn. "They provide a reference point for the future, for conservation and scientific purposes."

Savvino-storozhevsky monastery and museum.

Zvenigorod's most famous sight is the Savvino-Storozhevsky Monastery, which was founded in 1398 by the monk Savva from the Troitse-Sergieva Lavra, at the invitation and with the support of Prince Yury Dmitrievich of Zvenigorod. Savva was later canonised as St Sabbas (Savva) of Storozhev. The monastery late flourished under the reign of Tsar Alexis, who chose the monastery as his family church and often went on pilgrimage there and made lots of donations to it. Most of the monastery’s buildings date from this time. The monastery is heavily fortified with thick walls and six towers, the most impressive of which is the Krasny Tower which also serves as the eastern entrance. The monastery was closed in 1918 and only reopened in 1995. In 1998 Patriarch Alexius II took part in a service to return the relics of St Sabbas to the monastery. Today the monastery has the status of a stauropegic monastery, which is second in status to a lavra. In addition to being a working monastery, it also holds the Zvenigorod Historical, Architectural and Art Museum.

Belfry and Neighbouring Churches

Located near the main entrance is the monastery's belfry which is perhaps the calling card of the monastery due to its uniqueness. It was built in the 1650s and the St Sergius of Radonezh’s Church was opened on the middle tier in the mid-17th century, although it was originally dedicated to the Trinity. The belfry's 35-tonne Great Bladgovestny Bell fell in 1941 and was only restored and returned in 2003. Attached to the belfry is a large refectory and the Transfiguration Church, both of which were built on the orders of Tsar Alexis in the 1650s.  

To the left of the belfry is another, smaller, refectory which is attached to the Trinity Gate-Church, which was also constructed in the 1650s on the orders of Tsar Alexis who made it his own family church. The church is elaborately decorated with colourful trims and underneath the archway is a beautiful 19th century fresco.

Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral

The Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral is the oldest building in the monastery and among the oldest buildings in the Moscow Region. It was built between 1404 and 1405 during the lifetime of St Sabbas and using the funds of Prince Yury of Zvenigorod. The white-stone cathedral is a standard four-pillar design with a single golden dome. After the death of St Sabbas he was interred in the cathedral and a new altar dedicated to him was added.

Under the reign of Tsar Alexis the cathedral was decorated with frescoes by Stepan Ryazanets, some of which remain today. Tsar Alexis also presented the cathedral with a five-tier iconostasis, the top row of icons have been preserved.

Tsaritsa's Chambers

The Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral is located between the Tsaritsa's Chambers of the left and the Palace of Tsar Alexis on the right. The Tsaritsa's Chambers were built in the mid-17th century for the wife of Tsar Alexey - Tsaritsa Maria Ilinichna Miloskavskaya. The design of the building is influenced by the ancient Russian architectural style. Is prettier than the Tsar's chambers opposite, being red in colour with elaborately decorated window frames and entrance.

At present the Tsaritsa's Chambers houses the Zvenigorod Historical, Architectural and Art Museum. Among its displays is an accurate recreation of the interior of a noble lady's chambers including furniture, decorations and a decorated tiled oven, and an exhibition on the history of Zvenigorod and the monastery.

Palace of Tsar Alexis

The Palace of Tsar Alexis was built in the 1650s and is now one of the best surviving examples of non-religious architecture of that era. It was built especially for Tsar Alexis who often visited the monastery on religious pilgrimages. Its most striking feature is its pretty row of nine chimney spouts which resemble towers.
