🌺 Hauʻoli Lā Hānau Kepoikai II! 🌺 It’s been 47 years since Captain Don Lipton built and launched the Kepoikai II, creating a symbol of aloha that sails the iconic shores of Waikiki. This isn’t just a catamaran; it’s a vessel that carries generations of stories, memories, and the spirit of ʻohana. Captain Don’s dream was to share the beauty of Waikiki with everyone, and his legacy lives on with Captain Jay, Captain Biggie, Dave, and the rest of the Kepoikai II crew, past and present! The blue and white sails have become legendary, gracing postcards, calendars, and even television shows! As we mark this 47th anniversary, we honor the history of this beloved catamaran and the countless journeys it has taken across the crest of the waves. Here’s to all who have sailed with us, shared their laughter, and brought their aloha. 🌈 Mahalo nui loa to everyone who has been a part of our story. We can’t wait to keep sailing with you for many more years to come. 🌊🛥️ ...

RATED 4.5 STARS ON TRIPADVISOR!
They have this operation dialed in. It is short but very sweet. The open bar and fun, yet competent, staff makes for good times on the water. The views are great, they have good music going, and it is fun meeting other folks on board. Definitely check it out!
What a wonderful experience! The crew was friendly and fun. The drinks were tasty and plentiful. The sunset was gorgeous and the moonrise was a terrific bonus. I highly recommend!
This was a great experience. This sail is very calm and relaxing and a completely different experience from the trade wind sails, where you expect to get tossed around and get wet. The crew was very friendly and attentive. The sunset was gorgeous, even though it was overcast all day. My wife and I now prefer this sail over the trade winds sails we have done in the past. Great sail!
My friend was visiting me on the island and we both loved this experience! The crew is so refreshing and fun! It was a mix of young and old! It was a great time! Would definitely recommend!
This is the best deal in Waikiki. Was there for a week and went on this cruise three times. ~$30 for one hour sail with open bar. So, you can sit in a hotel bar and nurse one drink or be on the ocean enjoying amazing views, listen to lively music and chug down multiple drinks. No brainer. Shout out to Dustin for the amazing sailing experience.
This was a total blast! The guys running the boat were friendly and entertaining. The sites were phenomenal. The sea life is gorgeous. And the drinks were very good. I booked a second trip, can’t wait to sale again!

Rave Reviews
Traveling at the age of 20 with your friends is a guaranteed fun time but when you do amazingly fun excursions like the Makani Catamaran, it just makes your vacations a thousand times better! My friends and I had such a great time thanks to your amazing staff. They’re very nice and very helpful. I’ve been on the catamaran three times and every time it just seems to get better and better. I highly recommend Makani Catamaran, MAHALO!!! oh and we saw turtles and DOLPHINS on our sail, IT WAS AMAZING!!!
This was by far the best catamaran we have been on! The staff is AMAZING. The crew is so helpful and funny. They make you feel like your part of their crew for sure. We loved spending time on the water and hearing all they had to say about the islands and animals. The captain was great! We will be doing this again!
We saw a sea turtle and a group of dolphins followed us for a while and did some "tricks". No whales on this trip but the crew made the experience fun by telling jokes and talking about the animals.
I can't say enough nice things about our trip on the Makani Catamaran! The staff were warm and friendly, the drinks we're tasty and the views were breathtaking. We had the opportunity to stand in the Captain's Galley and take photos. Captain Jon was so accommodating and thoughtful - he even offered to take our picture. This is one experience you do not want to miss out on! Highly recommend.
The boat was in great shape, staff was very professional and committed to safety. I appreciated that more than anything. I would highly recommend this trip for anyone visiting the Island, the views are well worth it. Great value trip!
So, full disclosure I was pretty skeptical that this would be fun at all. In fact, this was totally my wifes idea. That said, of all the things we did in Hawaii, this ended up being one of my favorites. We had been doing pushing ourselves pretty hard for several days up to this point and it was just really nice to sit back for a couple hours with drinks in hand and hang out as a family. We sat on the netting in the front and our 9,7, and 5 year old kids thought it was awesome to watch the water go by underneath and at one point even had some dolphins following us. 100% would suggest and will definitely do again.
I am so happy that I booked this during our trip to Hawaii. The crew was nice, hospitable, and very engaging. They made the sail super fun for everyone on board. Our captain was even able to show us sea turtles and a whale, even though we were not promised that when booking! Plus there was a full service bar and the drinks were awesome! I would definitely recommend to everyone. It is definitely worth it.

RATED 4.5 STARS ON TRIPADVISOR!
Great time snorkeling with this crew! We saw a lot of fish and many sea turtles. My daughter loved jumping off the side of the boat over and over! Drinks were great too!
My husband and I had a wonderful time on the 2:30 Sunset Cruise. The guys sailing us out were super nice. It was beautiful on the water, and we even saw a turtle in the water! The Mai Tai drinks they had on board, were actually the best we had the entire trip. I would defiantly recommend this experience! P.S. you could get soaked...we did :-)
So much fun! One of the more affordable sunset cruises and 100% worth it. The workers on the boat were friendly and upbeat and did a great job of cultivating a fun vibe. Would do it again in a heartbeat.
Best part of my trip! Kalani, Mina, Mitchell and Justin were great. Super nice and friendly. The views during sunset were incredible. I will definitely be booking this again when I come back to Waikiki. Thanks Manu Kai crew!
This was a great experience. We went on the morning snorkel tour and had a fantastic time! The boat comes right to the beach at Waikiki. The people were fantastic!!! We saw 3 turtles and lots of fish at turtle canyon.
We did the Diamond Head Tour and had a great time. This is a 90 min tour with sails up. Captain and crew were great. Great views of Waikiki and Diamond Head from the boat. The Manu Kai is small enough that you really felt the waves and were really sailing. Crew were manning the sails but still had time to make sure you had mai tais. Overall a great time and highly recommend.
Well worth the money. Great crew, drinks included. Plenty of room on the boat. Friendly atmosphere. Bring a camera or iPhone, maybe a sweatshirt for after sunset. Expect to have a great time for $40.00. Definitely would go again.
We chose Manu Kai for the mid morning turtle snorkel at Turtle Canyon and had a terrific time. We saw plenty of turtles and fish and enjoyed the professional but casual, laid back vibe of the crew. Jess in particular was outstanding (with a background in marine biology). Post our snorkel we headed towards Diamond Head for a great view of the beach and were lucky enough to see dolphins at play. A great morning trip.

Great catamaran crew. This was the best experience we had during our time herein HI. We had the whole boat to ourselves for 2 hours. We sailed, snorkeled, and swam with sea turtles. I highly recommend this over those large group snorkeling excursions with the huge crowds. Very personal experience for our family. Would do this again on our next trip for sure.

Awesome time. Great crew, very personable and knowledgeable. Good food, great hospitality, and always felt safe. Definitely recommended this outing.
was there 5.12.2024 & it was after they had 3 days of terrible weather, our day was excellent & the turtles were looking to come up for air, the picnic was a success, the crew were pros & happy we would be able to enjoy their beautiful day . hadn't read anything beforehand at all so didn't know what to expect - except a boat, a ride, & snorkeling was involved. not sure who the "old man, guy " one of our members keeps referring to was , if you know who you are, its because we don't feel old & being there , definitely feel young & while one of us had a cold , & i hope no one there became ill, kept all but 2 in our party out of the snorkeling, but we still went in for volleyball. not me, i was designated to keep the phones dry & get the errant volleyball but still managed to enjoy all of it & would love going back . i'd be there every day , maybe the lady to the "old man" hope not " rocking the boat " wasn't able to find the words , too busy not getting eaten by sharks - just kidding.....it was great, wish i'd have said something in person while still there, went by too fast. anyone who wears glasses, no worries, they take care of you too . will be back :) cathy r joliet,il
The picnic sail was a lot of fun. Our original sail date was rainy so I sent an email a couple days before asking to reschedule. They were very accommodating and we ended up going on a Friday instead of originally scheduled Monday. Pick up from a hotel next door was vey convenient and quick. The bus was comfy. Driver was excellent. The boat was nice. Service was great. Food was good. Crew was super friendly, helpful and had great customer service. Shout out to Mike for serving drinks and chatting with us. The sandbar was fun. We all played volleyball. Bring a football to throw around if you have one. We saw a few turtles going to the second spot. Then had a good time snorkeling. Lots of coral, not that many fish. All in all a great day. (Bring cash tip for the crew, they deserved it!)
Hanging out at the sandbar.
View from the boat. That's the bbq for burgers.
We booked a 6 hour experience to the sandbar during our trip to Oahu and had a great time! Pick up and drop off in Waikiki is provided as part of the experience - we had to walk a bit to get to our pick up and drop off location but the bus was new, great AC, comfy seats. Ride to the pier took about 45 min through the mountain, the pier itself and boat weren't anything too impressive but the crew was super friendly and a great time. Lunch was included and it was a burger and some sides - there is a vegetarian option. Sadly the pineapple was not fresh and this was a bit disappointing but food was ok all considering. Alcoholic Drinks are available for purchase $5 each and included beers, hard seltzers and boxed wine. If using a credit card, $20 4 drink minimum purchase. First stop was to the sandbar - crew set up a volleyball net and took pics for everyone. Next we motored our a bit and saw some epic turtles. Then we continued to a reef area for snorkeling - definitely the best snorkeling we've ever done - coral had a ton of tropical fish and turtles. Overall, we were a bit sad the experience didn't include any SUP or kayaking but overall it was a fantastic day trip, great crew and definitely worth the price (we booked directly on the website for $161/pp)
Seeing lots of turtles
Sandbar stop
This is the 2nd time we used them, 1st time when our daughter was 18 months old and now when she is almost 6 years old. We LOOOOVED every second of it. This 2nd time was even better then the first! They went above and beyond with everything! They main person (sorry I don't remember the name) took my daughter (with my approval) to introduce her to snorkeling, she was beyond happy! His son and daughter are very cool young adults and were very helpful with everything. We already wanting go back there! They also provided lunch which is very delicious, you get to choose what you want in your burger, you can get some beans on the side, salad and other stuff. They had a bunch of drinks alcoholic (available for purchase) and non alcoholic like soda and water included in the cost. My husband this time got to play the volleyball with all the crew and it was really, really cool experience. Besides the beautiful salt water fishes we saw some turtles and large stingrays! It was definitely one of the best thing we did on Oahu and we will sail with them again in the near future! Thank you guys!

My husband and I booked a weekday Kaneohe snorkeling tour and BBQ with Captain Bob's Picnic Sail last month. Our trip to Oahu had been hit hard with lots and lots of rain and we booked the tour on the one day where there appeared to be little to no rain forecasted. However, as our stay progressed, we noticed that the day of the tour now showed a 50% chance of rain. I reached out to the booking company 3 days prior and left a message asking if the tour was "rain or shine" or if they would cancel in the event of rain. I never received a response. When we showed up at 10:30am for the tour the skies unleashed a torrential amount of hard, pelting rain. When I asked the captain if the tour was cancelled on account of the rain he said no. Really? When we looked at the rain forecast for the rest of the day it showed solid rainfall for the next 3 hours. I'm sorry but when you book a tour and spend $366 to enjoy a 4-hour picnic sail with volleyball and snorkeling you want to actually enjoy the experience. How is playing sandbar volleyball and eating a BBQ lunch in the rain enjoyable? When we asked if we could receive a refund on account of the rain we were told canceling a tour due to weather was at the captain's discretion based on whether or not he felt it was safe to have the tour. Otherwise there are no exceptions to the cancellation policy. We travel to the islands quite frequently - we know that daily rain showers are to be expected. That's not what this was. The rain was torrential and long-lasting. How was that safe? How was that enjoyable? We asked if we could get a refund and we were denied. I didn't see any other guests lined up to "enjoy" this rain-soaked adventure. I suppose they were the smart ones. If the booking company (Best of Hawaii Tours and Activities) had returned my message when I inquired about the "rain or shine" policy we would have cancelled. I think it was very poor form for the tour company to not even offer at least a partial refund. I understand there was food preparation and boat preparation for at least my husband and I. But come on folks, nobody in their right mind would want to sit on a boat in the soaking rain for 4 hours. We sure didn't pay for that. But the company got their money and it's obvious that was the priority. Customer satisfaction certainly was not. What a huge disappointment. We have a few friends and family visiting Honolulu next month and we told them to steer clear of this company.
Absolutely fantastic crew. We saw plenty of turtles and the reef was teaming with fish to look at
Absolutely, an enjoyable tour to take. You will not regret. There are two main activities, 1. Kane'ohe Sandbar, you can walk around in the middle of the ocean. The best place to take pictures. 2. Snorkeling. Having a burger at the middle of the ocean without the boat rocking is the best. I will try this tour again. The staff are very friendly. A great experience for kids also.
A beautiful day.
One of the best boat excursions we have been on. The sand bar is beautiful. Lunch was good. We got to see a lot of turtles. I highly recommend this. Staff was fun and knowledgeable.
Kaneohe Sand Bar
This excursion was everything and more! This was a highlight of our trip to Oahu for sure! Playing volleyball on a stretch of dirt in the middle of the sea was so much fun. Also, the snorkel dive was so much fun and swimming with turtles. Everything was superb. Don't sleep on this excursion if you ever get the opportunity. Look no further.

Starlink at sea: all change for cruisers
- May 13, 2023
Starlink has shaken up its offering for cruising sailors with a crack down on service term violations and new data plans
Starlink, Elon Musk’s low orbit satellite network which delivers low cost high speed internet via a portable dish, has shaken up its offering for cruising sailors and other broadband users at sea.
Starlink has been hailed as a game-changer by many adopters. Since its launch just two and a half years ago, its coverage has expanded rapidly and many cruisers crossing the Atlantic last season reported full service mid-ocean. Even cruisers in remote Pacific regions have been reporting excellent connectivity while at sea.
In March this year, four American sailors were rescued after their yacht Raindancer sank mid-Pacific in what may well be the first Starlink-enabled rescue. While the conventional rescue communication protocols worked effectively, their rescue was accelerated by the fact that several other yachts on the route were made aware of their plight from browsing Facebook while online, and a Whatsapp group was set up to help coordinate their rescue among boats with fast connectivity (see June issue of Yachting World for the full story).
However, most recreational sailors have been using Starlink Roam, previously known as Starlink RV (‘recreational vehicle’) – a plan designed for those in touring vehicles, off grid cabins etc, who needed connectivity whilst stationary – and, critically, on land. The original dedicated Maritime version was designed for commerical use, with subscription initially costing around £5,000 per month.

Numerous Facebook groups sprang up, populated with instructions on how to ‘hack’ the standard Starlink dish to improve its connectivity on a moving yacht, though Starlink contracts always made clear that using a modified stardard dish and Roam connection whilst sailing was in breach of its warranty and terms of service.
However, over the past couple of week cruisers have been receiving emails from Starlink notifying them that the company is cracking down on this usage:
“Your Starlink has been used in areas that violate the terms and conditions of your service plan: your plan does not include service on the ocean. Starting as early as May 9th, 2023 you will be unable to connect to the internet on the ocean except to access your Starlink account where you can make updates to your account.”
The message then went on to recommend users change their service plan to one of their new, more expensive, ‘Mobile Priority’ plans (though considerably less than the previous Maritime plan).
It’s important to note that this crack down is not a change to Starlink’s usage permissions, the company is only enforcing its existing terms and conditions.
The notifications prompted a flurry of discusssion on the many Starlink user groups, with some joking that it ‘felt like Y2K all over again’, and concerns that connectivity would be cut off instantly at 0000hrs on May 9 (that wasn’t the case, although some customers have received repeated emails and connectivity warnings).
Starlink at sea
Starlink maps service areas into 15 mile cells, shown on its service maps as blue and black hexagons, determining whether that area is ‘land’ or ‘ocean’, marked in ‘blue’ and ‘black’ respectively. If the satellite technology detects that the dish is being used in a black hexagon it will consider you to be on the ocean. There are, unsurprisingly, a few anomalies – islands and promontories etc which have not been recognised as land etc.
‘Land’ and ‘Ocean’ areas as shown around the Canary Islands on the Starlink map. Source: Starlink.com
Starlink advised Roam users instead move to one of their Mobile Priority plans. However, in a pattern that will be familiar to anyone who’s followed Musk’s rapid-fire changes at Twitter, those policy options went through a series of updates and different pricing plans over the past week.
One possible solution for cruising users may be to subscribe to a Priority data plan which can be ‘toggled’ on and off as they move between land and ocean areas – although some users report that even after toggling ‘off’ they were still using data from the more expensive Priority plan.
Whilst many RV/Roam users have successfully used Starlink’s standard dish whilst in motion, Starlink now offers a dedicated ‘in motion’ option using a higher performance dish. The website currently shows Starlink Martime and Starlink Mobility packages from £247 per month with a hardware cost of £2410, though there are some hefty discounts currently being promoted to existing standard dish owners on new hardware costs
Will a securely anchored yacht running Starlink be viewed as ‘in motion’? Photo: Phil Johnson/SV Sonder
What’s not yet clear is whether the geo-locating technology considers being on anchor or in a marina as stationary or in motion. One email shared on a user group, apparently from Starlink customer service, says:
“You do not need the high performance dish to use in-motion service. However, using the regular dish in-motion voids the warranty, as it wasn’t deigned or built for in motion use. In motion means moving…. A boat at anchor is considered in motion. The bobbing motion will trigger the motion sensors in the dish.
“The non high perforamnce antennas may be used in motion now, and in the forseeable future. We do not anticipate removing this capability. A reminder however that they weill be out of warranty if used in motion.”
However, confusing, Starlink’s own FAQ page , under “Can I use Starlink in motion?”, advises:
“Flat High Performance Starlink is only available to be purchased in certain regions. If your account country is outside these regions, you can use your current Starlink hardware paired with the Mobile Priority data to access prioritized service globally on land and in the ocean while stationary.” [our underline]
User groups advise contacting Starlink direct if, for example, you want to use non-priority data while in port and only occasional in-motion priority data for an ocean passage. Options and restrictions also depend on which region cruisers purchased their dish in, and which address their data plan is registered to.
The other consensus among user groups seems to be that, unless you need seamless high speed connectivity because you are running a business whilst cruising or similar, not to rush to replace hardware or sign up for new data plans as they are rapidly evolving.
