Formula One world champion Fernando Alonso on his Sunreef 60 Power Eco catamaran

Formula One world champion Fernando Alonso on his Sunreef 60 Power Eco catamaran

Formula One driver Fernando Alonso tells BOAT International about his love of the water and decision to purchase a 60 Sunreef Power Eco catamaran, currently in build at Sunreef Yachts.

Was the sea a big part of your life growing up?

Absolutely. I need to have the sea in my life. I grew up in the north of Spain in Oviedo and every summer, or every day that I could, I went to the coast to enjoy the beach and the sea. Now I follow the coast when I choose where to live: I live in Dubai; I live in Monaco; I live in Spain.

What drew you to catamarans?

I discovered catamarans two years ago with Sunreef. It was a catamaran that was more than a catamaran – like a small villa on water. On a catamaran you have these very big spaces inside and compared to monohulls. I started chartering boats in summer in between races and at the beginning, I was just thinking of chartering the boat. Then recently I moved to Monaco, living on the coast again. I watch the port from my window every morning and started dreaming about having my own boat.

What do you like best about spending time on the water?

I live with very high adrenaline on race days and I'm always in a Formula One car on the circuit or travelling around the world. When I spend time on the catamaran it is completely the opposite. I slow down my life and I go like in slow motion, so I can really enjoy every second of the day and every hour and every meal on board... and every sleep.

Why did you choose the Sunreef 60 Power Eco?

I chose the power version of the Sunreef 60. I do not plan at the moment to go very far from Monaco or very far from the Mediterranean. I will have always a limited number of people on board, only a few friends or family and the Sunreef 60 felt like a perfect size. On the Eco, there was no discussion for me. I think sustainability plays a big part in my values and my thoughts at the moment and I think it makes perfect sense with being in the water and being in the middle of the Mediterranean and taking care of that sea that we love.

What does your ideal day on a boat look like?

Not waking up too early. I like to sleep in the mornings, totally relax have a good breakfast and spend some time in the water. Then, a light lunch, because soon after I will probably get on some of the water toys and spend time playing around with different things. My ideal day ends with enjoying some music with friends and preparing dinner – ideally a BBQ or something on the flybridge.

Where will you take your new catamaran?

My first destinations this summer will be in the Med – South of France, Corsica, Sardinia – potentially Greece. That’s also the good thing about the solar panels on the Sunreef Eco line, you have this unlimited range.

“The 60 Sunreef Power Eco gave me exactly the yachting experience I was looking for,” the Spanish racer said in a statement.

“Long, fume-free, and quiet cruises let you enjoy the seas on a whole new level,” Alonso explained. “This yacht has some amazing technology that cannot be found anywhere else.”

The multihull is equipped with electric motors that allow it to cruise smoothly and silently sans emissions. It also features a “solar skin” that can generate power from the sun’s rays. All that energy is then stored in an ultra-light battery bank, ensuring a continuous supply of clean power.

The zero-emissions cruiser looks good, too, with sleek, clean lines creating an elegant silhouette. Onboard, standout features include a vast aft cockpit with a swim platform and aft garage, as well as a full-beam bow terrace and a generous flybridge. To top it off, the spacious interior can comfortably accommodate 12 guests and four crew. Alonso took both his family and friends on his recent yachting holiday, in fact.

“On board, all that matters is peace of mind, fresh air, and good company,” he added. “Yachting should not be about ego. For me, it’s about sharing good moments and being respectful towards the environment.”

SailGP F50: On board the sailing equivalent of a Formula 1 racecar

Yachting World

  • August 20, 2019

The F50 is the new one-design foiling 50ft catamaran used for the SailGP circuit, and is adapted from the AC50 used in the 2017 America’s Cup. Mark Chisnell steps aboard

“I think 99% of people believe that we received these boats from Bermuda, repainted them and sent them on their way again. I don’t think we’re ever going to be able to explain quite what we’ve done, but the amount of work that has happened here in New Zealand has been simply phenomenal,” explains Brad Marsh, technical team operations manager for SailGP . “The only thing that resembles the previous boats is the length and width; they have been modified in every respect.”

Marsh is talking about the F50, the boat developed for the SailGP circuit. The basic plan was simple enough: to take the AC50s that raced in the America’s Cup in Bermuda in 2017 and use them to jump-start a one-design fleet for the new professional circuit. The AC50 would transform into a strict one-design F50 with standardised components.

The fundamentals of the boat didn’t change: it is still a 50ft foiling catamaran with a hard wingsail. The F50 foils using rudders with elevators, and two L-shaped daggerboards. The crew control the angle of attack of both to achieve flat, fast and stable flight.

But almost everything was built new, from the daggerboards and rudder through the control systems and hydraulics to the headsails, as well as two new hull platforms. “We have been going since November 2017, when they started laminating the daggerboards,” recalls Marsh, who has been overseeing the work at Core Builders Composites at Warkworth, north of Auckland.

“In April 2018 we received our first containers with the boats from Bermuda. In October 2018 we sailed the first boat, and in February 2019 we sail our first regatta. I think it’s been about 135,000 man hours.” It’s an immense amount of work, a lot of which is not immediately visible – like the adaptations that mean the boats can now disassemble for shipping.

“It’s the closest thing that sailing has to Formula 1 now. We are a travelling circus going to international venues. We’ve had to take boats that weren’t intended to be dismantled at all, and turn them into something that could go on this travelling roadshow. Every component has to be stored in a container and assembled and disassembled quickly so we can get as much time on the water as possible.

Eagle Class 53: The foiling cruiser inspired by the America’s Cup

The $1million match race: Ellison and Coutts unveil SailGP circuit for 50ft foiling catamarans

There had been many rumours and speculative stories, but last night at a glitzy ceremony in London the highly anticipated…

“We know when we go to an event the intention is to have two days of practice and two days of racing, so there’s no point in having two weeks of assembly for four days of sailing. So we’ve had to be very clever about how the systems and boat work so that it can be assembled quickly, sailed reliably, packed up quickly and transported safely around the world in containers.

“We have 66 40ft containers that have all been custom built. The wing goes in one container, the hull or platform breaks down and goes into two containers, plus the boards and rudders. It’s about having a system and set-up so you don’t lose all the pieces and you’re not running around looking for bits.”

Battery power

There have been philosophical changes as well as practical ones – one of which is very visible. There is just one grinding pedestal, compared to the two on which the America’s Cup crews laboured so much blood, sweat and tears. The foil rake, rudder pitch, cant, wing twist and jib sheet is now driven by lithium ion batteries, leaving just the wing sheet adjustment needing the manpower of two grinders.

sailgp-f50-raceboat-battery-credit-mark-chisnell

The lithium ion batteries which have replaced the manual grinder-produced power are housed in a central pod. Photo: Mark Chisnell

“The boats have moved away from the physical, grinding aspect, to focus more on the technical side of the sailing challenge,” said Marsh. “Using the batteries means we don’t need a sixth sailor as grinder, but we have changed the roles around.

“So we have one person, the flight controller, whose job is specifically to fly the boat. In the past that was done by the helmsman: now we’ve split that role off so it can be focussed on.”

During the last America’s Cup, the crews were restricted by the power available from the grinders. “They had to limit their tacks and gybes, but it also meant they had to limit how much they moved the daggerboards and rudders. Now we have unlimited battery power, the teams are able to move all the components as much as they like.

sailgp-f50-raceboat-hydraulics-credit-mark-chisnell

Adding batteries resulted in a redesign and rebuild of the entire hydraulic system. The system now demands over five times as much oil as when the hydraulics were grinder-powered. Photo: Mark Chisnell

“The introduction of the flight controller means that one person is there with his or her joystick and they are constantly moving the daggerboard in an effort to keep the boat level and in constant flight.” The extra workload on the hydraulic system meant that it needed a complete redesign and rebuild.

SailGP took delivery of four of the six boats that competed in Bermuda, and the F50’s development team – led by technical director Mike Drummond – was able to go over all of them and select the best ideas from each for the new fleet. The details of the different control systems and hydraulics used on each AC50 had been tightly guarded secrets during the Cup.

“It was extremely interesting for us. We had the opportunity to take four different boats from the America’s Cup and bring them back into one shed, pull everything out and see what the different teams did. Then we had to go through and standardise these things, so that each boat is identical,” said Marsh.

sailgp-f50-raceboat-disassembled-credit-mark-chisnell

The boats have been redesigned for quick assembly and disassembly at each venue. Photo: Mark Chisnell

The one thing that didn’t change significantly was the wingsails, at least not yet. “The wings are still about 85% as they were in Bermuda. By the time we had rebuilt all the boats, built 28 daggerboards and 28 rudders, stripped, reconfigured, rebuilt and repainted the boats, we didn’t have time to do the wings as well.

“We have now started a project to build eight new wings for the 2020 season. They are going to be a modular wing, which will allow us to assess the conditions and set up for each regatta. They could be set to be 4m taller than the current wing, the same size, or 4m shorter than the current wing,” explained Marsh.

“The idea is to be able to have the boats foil in very light winds, and still sail in very heavy winds. This opens up different venues to us.” The boats will constantly develop to keep them at the bleeding edge of what’s possible, while remaining one-design.

Nothing like this has ever been done before – the nearest is probably the developments the VO65 went through between the last two Volvo Ocean Races . Those boats generated some of the most exciting offshore racing ever seen.

It will be interesting to see if the same philosophy can deliver that result for high-speed, short-course inshore racing long-term. The America’s Cup community will be watching with interest.

The F1 driver of the Aston Martin team, Fernando Alonso enters the select club of the nautical world as the owner of a spectacular yacht, an electric propulsion catamaran. After taking the podium in the first race of the 2023 championship in Bahrain, he has announced the purchase this summer of his new 60 Sunreef Power Eco. Alonso has opted for the Sunreef shipyard , founded in 2002 in Gdansk (Poland) by the French entrepreneur Francis Lapp (Alsace, France, 1958) and currently one of the leaders in the design, production and manufacture of luxury catamarans. It is also the shipyard in which Rafa Nadal trusted to order his new boat and also the ex-racer Nico Rosberg.

catamarano f1

The peculiarity of Alonso’s new boat is that his 60 Sunreef Power Eco is an electrified and solar-powered yacht, and its length is 60 feet (about 18.3 meters) and 10 meters at its widest point. With a density of less than 5.2 kilograms per kWh, the batteries of Sunreef Yachts ‘ eco boats are 30% lighter than those commonly used in the yachting world with power ranging from 190 to 380 kW and can be recharged on chargers of different voltages.

The two hulls and some parts of the decks and roofs are equipped with solar panels, in total more than 68 m2 capable of generating 21 kWp. It is equipped with electric and hybrid engines and ultra-light batteries. Above, one of the cabins, located in the lower part, all with individual bathrooms.

Thanks to the use of state-of-the-art technologies, it achieves the best energy efficiency and the greatest autonomy. With the light and innovative system of solar panels integrated into the sides of the hull and in any curved part, the 60 Sunreef Power Eco boats up to 68.6m² of solar panels and generates up to 21.5kWp.

catamarano f1

The Asturian pilot explained that “the world is moving in this direction, we want more sustainability, and for me it makes a lot of sense to opt for an electric catamaran. This type of boat allows you to forge a closer connection with the sea”. Alonso was introduced to Sunreef Yachts catamarans in the summer of 2021, when he chartered a Sunreef 80 to cruise Greece. “This will be my first yacht, I don’t have anything specific in mind, but I want it to always be ready to go. Sometimes I go out to sea spontaneously, so I want to make sure it’s reliable. I know the technology of this electric boat is complex, but I also see the effort Sunreef Yachts puts in. I look forward to spending a lot of time on board,” he explained.

The 60 Sunreef Power Eco accommodates 12 passengers and four crew members. In addition to sundecks, sundeck, dining room, lounges or Jacuzzi, the owner can customize it and adapt it to his tastes. Alonso has revealed his choice: “a barbecue is a must for me, as well as a good sound system, because music will be important on board, and I will certainly bring water toys to combine relaxation with sport”.

F1 Champion Fernando Alonso Just Commissioned A Wild 60-Foot Electric Catamaran

By: Scott Way

Sunreef 60 Power Eco yacht

Another pro athlete is joining the yachties, but this time it's not your typical over-the-top megayacht. Two-time F1 champ Fernando Alonso has just commissioned a 60 foot electric catamaran from Sunreef Yachts, and the power catamaran is full of the latest sustainable tech. In fact, it's one of the more modest (at least insofar as yachts can go) and eco-friendly designs announced this year.

As for everyone else who hit the water this year, reigning SuperBowl champ Tom Brady kept it relatively modest with a new Wajer 77 , and 6-time NBA champ Michael Jordon has been spending his summer marlin fishing on a custom 80' Viking sportfishing yacht. Neither of those are exactly day boats, but they're also not as gargantuan as Jeff Bezos' new world-record sailing yacht .

As for Alonso's new Sunreef Power Eco , the 60-foot catamaran is relatively small and serves as Sunreef's second smallest offering. But it's no slouch.

“I have been observing the evolution of this brand for a while, and I appreciate their commitment to push innovation forward with the Sunreef Yachts Eco range,” Alonso said in a statement after signing the contract alongside Sunreef founder and president Francis Lapp. “I’m excited to embark on this project as I know the 60 Sunreef Power Eco represents everything I am looking for: top engineering, amazing know-how and an amazing eco-friendly product.”

“We take another big step towards a more sustainable yachting experience and we are thrilled to take it together with an outstanding and inspiring ambassador on board,” said Lapp.

catamarano f1

The Power Eco 60 boasts "complete freedom for customization," meaning that owners have nearly limitless free reign with regards to options and interior layout. In Alonso's case, his choice for electric power will use Sunreef's stellar "solar skin," which involves an advanced system of solar panels that cover almost 740 square feet of the yacht's exterior. That coverage then generates up to 13 kWh of energy that can be stored inside its ultralight battery bank for silent and vibration-free cruising. The solar panels are a marvel just on their own, as they're built right into the hull sides and superstructure of the entire yacht. The dual electric engines come in either a 2 x 300 hp configuration or a 2 x 850 hp configuration.

As for the interior, the yacht has accommodations for up to 12 guests and 4 crew with an ultra-modern and minimalist design. Interior components are derived from sustainable materials and the interior itself uses eco-tech like an energy-saving AC unit and high-efficiency electronics. Other neat features include a spa pool, automatic height-adjustable tables, a fully equipped wet bar, oversized sunpads, and full height retractable glass doors. The master suits packs a king size bed with a large TV, vanity, and walk-in dressing room, not to mention an ensuite bathroom with a walk-in rainfall shower. The Sunreef 60 also has room below decks for a tender, jet ski, and other water toys.

Alonso's choice for a new ride may have been inspired by fellow countrymen Rafael Nadal's recent delivery of a Sunreef 80 Power yacht. Nadal went with diesel power and dual 1200 hp engines, plus 20' feet of additional length, and he did give it the epic name of Great White. No word on what Alonso will name his, but once he retires from the world's fastest racing series to boat off into the sunset maybe Gonzo Alonso is a good fit.

You can get a look inside the Sunreef 60 in the video below:

DNA F1 A-CLASS RACING CAT

In close collaboration with DNA Performance Sailing, the F1 has been developed late 2015 - early 2016. Building on the 2010 DNA class A catamaran, which served as a platform for many developments for hydro-foiling appendages, rigs and lots more, the F1 provides a state of the art basis for new developments to test and implement.

The class A catamaran is a one person racing catamaran designed within a strict set of dimensions, weight and features such as top loading dagger boards for beaching, brought forward by the International A-Division Catamaran Association.

Named coolest sailboat ever built  by the catsailingnews.com blog, this boat boast a range of fresh ideas for performance and ergonomics.

At this performance level, aerodynamics play a defining role. The wing deck leading edge is shaped to assure a clean entry of air flow into the "deck sweeper" sail. In order to reduce aero drag, the rudder cross bar integrates with the wing deck and the transoms are narrowed down. As a result, the F1 is the fastest upwind sailing A-cat ever.

Further novelties include a solid sheet trampoline, injection molded rudder cassette plates, synchronized foil rake control from the trapeze, improved ergonomics and lots more.

Only a bit of breeze is needed to lift the F1 its foils, both reaching and upwind. The series started out highly successful with the 2016 World Championship with Mischa Heemskerk in its very first race.

Retired F1 champ Sebastian Vettel revving it up as co-owner of Germany SailGP Team

When he’s on the water, he’s not like sitting there, he’s making notes, and after we are back from the water, he is telling us from his point of view, what should be developed.” (AP Photo/Damian Dovarganes)

SailGP has often billed itself as being Formula One on the water, because it has the fastest boats and top skippers in the sport.

That analogy has come full circle now that retired F1 driver Sebastian Vettel is co-owner of the Germany SailGP Team, which is making its debut in Season 4 of tech baron Larry Ellison’s global league. After opening with two regattas in the United States, SailGP is on a three-regatta swing through Europe that starts with the France Sail Grand Prix in Saint-Tropez on Saturday and Sunday.

To Vettel, speed is speed, whether it’s flying down a straightaway at more than 200 mph in an F1 car or flying above waves approaching the equivalent of highway speeds in a 50-foot foiling catamaran. He’s one of only a handful of people who have experienced both.

Vettel, who won four F1 championships before retiring in 2022, took the wheel of the German team’s F-50 catamaran for some speed runs after the first day of racing in the Los Angeles regatta in late July.

“Obviously, yes I had the wheel and did some turns, but it takes a lot more than just having the wheel in your hand,” Vettel said afterward. “Very impressive, and all without an engine, you know, to have that much power and speed building up.”

Vettel said the catamaran hit about 40 mph. The top speed of an F-50 is about 60 mph when the wind is up and the cat is up on its foils, with the hulls completely out of the water to reduce drag and increase speed. The catamarans get their power from a wingsail that looks and performs like an airliner’s wing.

“On the water, it’s a very different feeling. It feels a lot higher,” Vettel said of the speed. “Plus, I was impressed with the turns, the G-force and the maneuvers you were able to do. And now we were on our own. You can only imagine when you’ve got others around you, it’s a lot more exciting.”

When all 10 boats are racing, it can be quite crazy as the world’s top skippers jockey for position at high speed and sometimes in close quarters. The ultimate goal is to achieve 100% flight time, which is sailing an entire race on foils without the hulls ever touching the water. That probably won’t happen in Saint-Tropez because the forecast is for light wind.

Sailors describe foiling as an otherworldly feeling. Vettel concurs.

“It’s funny because initially, it’s like, OK, you’re on the water, and then all of a sudden, it’s a little bit like flying because everything goes silent and then you just hear the wind picking up, the wind speed. It’s a sort of feeling you want more, more, more,” Vettel said.

Vettel was looking for a new challenge after retiring from F1. He’s not a sailor but he is interested in SailGP’s sustainability efforts and in how teams and regattas are organized. Steering the boat was a great introduction to being a hands-on owner.

“It’s definitely been very useful and enjoyable because I still have to learn so much,” Vettel said. “I’m interested in how things work, usually. So many new things. The wind is an element I know from racing, but nowhere near to the extent that you need it here. Not just to power you, but also to try to control it, try to anticipate it, even though you can’t see it.”

Like all SailGP crewmembers, Vettel was outfitted with a crash helmet, flotation vest, an emergency oxygen supply and other survival gear because the sport can be dangerous. Capsizes are common, such as Friday when the U.S. crew, skippered by two-time America’s Cup champion Jimmy Spithill, rolled over when hit by a gust of wind during a slow-speed downwind maneuver in between practice races. There were no injuries and minimal damage to the catamaran. Spithill is the defending Saint-Tropez champion.

Team Germany’s skipper is Erik Heil, who won bronze medals in consecutive Summer Olympics in the high-performance 49er skiff class.

Having Vettel as co-owner is “pretty cool,” Heil said. “I think the cool thing about him is not that he’s an investor, I think the cool thing is that he did for very long a professional racing series, and you feel that. When he’s on the water, he’s not like sitting there, he’s making notes, and after we are back from the water, he is telling us from his point of view, what should be developed.”

Team Germany is 10th after the first two of 12 regattas. Three-time defending champion Team Australia has a one-point lead over Spain in the season standings, with Denmark, Canada and New Zealand close behind.
