What is a yacht ? It might seem like an odd question, but it’s actually a very sensible one. What makes a yacht a yacht ? And when does a boat become a ship ? Here’s what you need to know.

Yacht origins – A Dutch ‘jaght’

A yacht is a craft used for pleasure and sport. The name comes from the Dutch word jaght , which translates as ‘hunter’, a fast, light sailing vessel used in the past by the nation’s navy to chase pirates and other ne’er do wells. When the English King Charles the Second was carried by ‘jacht’ from the Netherlands back home, in 1660, the word soon came to mean a vessel in which important people were carried, not just any old boat.

What defines a yacht – Cruisers, superyachts and mega yachts

These days there are two types of yacht, sailing yachts and motor-powered yachts. Size-wise, yachts tend to be anything from 10m long to hundreds of feet.

• If you own a luxury craft less than 12 metres long it’s usually called a cabin cruiser, sometimes simply a cruiser.
• A superyacht is usually more than 24m long.
• What is a mega yacht ? They tend to be anything longer than 50 metres and there’s no upper limit! The world’s biggest yacht is 728 feet long, an awe inspiring 222 metres.

Why are yachts associated with luxury?

The fact that it’s luxurious doesn’t make it a yacht… but it does make it a luxury yacht. When King Charles the Second returned home to England aboard his Dutch jaght, his brother James, the Duke of York, fell in love with the impressive vessel, and the two brothers each had a jaght of their own built. Then they raced each other on the River Thames, the sport of sailing for pleasure was born, and it wasn’t long before the nobility of England all wanted a yacht (jaght) of their own.

When the Dutch and English made their way over the Atlantic to America they carried on racing their yachts in the ‘new world’. In 1816 Cleopatra’s Barge  was built, the ultimate in opulence and a craft that sealed the happy fate of these beautiful boats for good.

She was 23 feet wide and weighed 192 tons, with a couple of elegant masts. She was fitted with fifty thousand dollars’ worth of luxurious interior and cost another fifty thousand to build, a feast of rare inlaid mahogany panelling, red velvet, golden lace and genuine solid silver kitchenware. And the outside was just as glorious, a masterpiece in colourful painted stripes on the starboard side plus a herring-bone pattern to port. Incredibly rare at the time, she even boasted indoor plumbing.

So luxurious that she soon became King Kamehameha II’s Royal Yacht, she was re-named Pride of Hawaii in his honour before being wrecked off the Hawaiian coast in 1824. An investor looked into creating a replica in 2008, at an estimated cost of more than seven million US dollars, but the project never got off the ground.

The invention of steam and combustion engines

The internal combustion engine followed the steam engine, and motor yachts were eventually born. The Great Depression in 1930s America put paid to the fledgling luxury yacht scene and ushered in a trend for smaller, neater, less expensive yachts. Is it a yacht, ship or boat?

So how do you know whether you’re looking at a yacht, ship or boat? At first glance it’s complicated. A yacht tends to be fancier than a boat or ship. As we’ve mentioned, these days the word ‘yacht’ itself comes with connotations of luxury, a smart personal vessel designed for recreation, relaxation and comfort, not work.

A ship is larger than a yacht, and the term is usually used to describe a working craft rather than something recreational. A ship needs a full crew, whereas a yacht doesn’t always, and a boat rarely does. Sailing vs. Cruising: Is There A Difference?

To you, one of the most relaxing things in life is gently riding the waters in your sailboat. You watch in awe as large sailboats glide by you, and maybe you’ve even seen a cruise boat or two in your time as well. That has you curious, is there any difference between sailing and cruising?

Sailing is typically a shorter-term maritime adventure in which you can reach your destination semi quickly. Compare that to cruising, where you’re on an extended trip going almost anywhere around the world. Since your stay is longer, cruise boats tend to offer more entertainment options than sailboats would.

In this article, we will dive deeper into the differences between sailing and cruising. If you’re having a hard time choosing between an expedition on a sailboat or a cruise ship, then this article is for you. Keep reading, as you won’t want to miss it! 

What Is Sailing?

Before we can talk about the differences between sailing and cruising, we should explain both terms clearly. Let’s begin with sailing. When sailing, you would ride in a sailboat, obviously. Sailboats may use kites, wingsails, or traditional sails to travel through the water. The gentle force of the breeze propels the boat forward. 

Sailing doesn’t have to occur exclusively on water. Land yachts can traverse land while iceboats are designed for crossing ice the way a sailboat would water. For the purpose of this article, though, we’ll talk about regular sailboats that do ride through bodies of water.

If you’re about to embark on a sailing expedition, then you’re typically going on a smaller boat with less of a crowd. You could have a few hundred people onboard, but it’s not an endless throng. 

While modern sailboats can venture almost anywhere you can get to via water, sailing trips are typically not very long. Maybe it’s an afternoon adventure or an overnight voyage. Given that you’re not on the boat for days, there’s little need to provide a whole host of entertainment options. You might have food and drink and a few means of keeping yourself occupied, but nothing extensive. 

That’s because, before you know it, you’ll have arrived at your destination. You’re then free to exit the sailboat and explore to your heart’s content until it’s time to get back on the boat and go home. 

What Is Cruising?

You can also go cruising. Powerboats and even sailboats are sometimes used for cruising. These boats would have either a multihull or monohull design and be between 33 and 50 feet long. Yachts and cruise boats or ships can accommodate a much larger crowd than a powerboat. 

When you go on a cruise, you should expect a trip that spans several days, maybe even a week or more. Instead of setting out for just one destination, a cruise typically takes you to many places in one trip. You can exit the cruise ship and spend time in each location, making the venture more worthwhile.

Since you’re on the ship for many days or weeks, cruises often have extensive entertainment. These include bingo and trivia at the very least to themed events, live productions, casinos, bars, fine dining, and shows. Riding on the ship is as much of an experience as is getting off and seeing new parts of the world. 

As such a unique way to travel, it should come as no surprise that cruises attract large crowds, often more than a thousand people, sometimes several thousand.  

What Are the Differences Between Sailing And Cruising?

Now that we’ve outlined the basics on sailing versus cruising, we want to share some of the differences between these two boating adventures. 

Now, this one’s not universally true, but for the most part, cruise boats tend to outsize sailboats. We say it’s not universally true because, if you remember from the last section, sometimes sailboats can be used for cruising purposes. If it comes down to powerboats versus sailboats for cruising, most favor sailboats. That’s because powerboats tend to cost a lot of money, both to buy and to use, especially when traveling long distances on the ocean. 

If we’re talking about a more traditional cruise ship or a yacht, though, then that’s going to be larger than even a pretty big sailboat. 

As we said before, cruises will have bigger crowds. Many describe a sailing trip as something cozy and intimate. Sure, there’s still 100 or 200 people onboard with you, maybe even more. You won’t get to know everyone, but you can make friends easily enough due to proximity and crowd size.

On a cruise, you can expect several thousand more people than on a sailing trip, making the numbers quite significant. The biggest cruise boats can accommodate over 5,000 people, so it almost feels like living in a big town, just in closer quarters. The experience has much less of an intimate atmosphere.  

Trip Length and Destinations 

The key difference between sailing and cruising is that the latter lasts much longer. It’s like we said before, when you sail, you have one destination you’re heading for. It may take an afternoon to reach it, sometimes longer, but you’re never gone for upwards of a week. It’s a short trip: there, back, and then home. 

On a cruise, you’re not limited to a single destination. You port at several places. Maybe you don’t get to spend as long there as you would have wished, but you can see many places during your trip. This takes time, though, so a cruise could last upwards of a week, maybe even two or three weeks in some instances. 

You know the old saying that you get what you pay for, right? That’s the case when taking a maritime adventure as well. The shorter your trip, the less it tends to cost. The boat doesn’t venture out as far, thus it uses less fuel and other resources. 

Longer trips often include more entertainment and accommodations (more on this momentarily), increasing the price. The type of boat you travel on, in this case a cruise ship or a yacht, can also contribute to the higher bill. 

Entertainment and Accommodations 

When you ride on a boat, you can’t rely on your smartphone to pass the time. Internet service can be spotty, as it’s not exactly like you’re close to any cell towers right? This may be okay if you’re riding a boat for a few hours, but once you get into overnight, even multi-day trips, you need something to do.  

Even on a sailboat voyage, you’re not left to twiddle your thumbs. You could sip a drink or eat a meal with your fellow passengers and swap some stories. There may also be dancing, card games, and other entertainment, but it’s often on a much smaller and more inexpensive scale. 

As far as accommodations, most sailboats have but one dining room. You don’t get an expansive menu because there’s just not as much room to prepare a multitude of tasty dishes.

That’s not a problem at all on a cruise. You can enjoy five-star dining and a wealth of meals to savor for breakfast, lunch, dinner, and dessert. You’ll eat like a king or a queen and love every minute of it.

You won’t ever spend a minute bored, either. As we said in the intro, cruises have all sorts of live shows and productions. The more upscale cruise ships even feature waterparks onboard. 

If you have kids or you yourself are prone to boredom, you’ll never wonder what you’re going to do to keep yourself busy while on a cruise. 

Stricter Schedule

While cruises do sound great, we want to reiterate that when you port, you get a certain amount of time off the ship and that’s it. If you’re not back in time, then the ship will take off without you. On a cruise, there’s a very strict schedule to follow. 

Since you’re only going to one destination on a sailboat, there’s more room in the schedule for alterations. If someone’s late getting back on the boat or there’s a delay when porting, that’s okay.

So, if you come across a water vessel that has a flat-shaped hull, it’s highly likely you will be looking at a houseboat. On the other hand, if it has a V-shaped hull, the chances are it’s a yacht or other similar water vessels built for agility and speed.

But, it’s also worth mentioning that some high-performance boats like tournament waterski boats also have flat-bottomed hulls. This hull design is to enable them to skim smoothly on the water surface.

Similar to other water vessels, houseboats and yachts come in different types, shapes and sizes. So, if you are looking to purchase any of these two water vessels, here are the different available types.

There are two main types of houseboats. These are static or non-cruising houseboats and bluewater or cruising houseboats. Each of these two types is built for a specific purpose and utilization.

Static Houseboats

As their name suggests, static households are not built for moving around. Most of the time, they are anchored or moored to a designated spot, which may be a dock or marina. Static houseboats are the most popular out there.

Non-cruising houseboats come equipped with almost all the modern conveniences that you would find in a normal house. However, these boats like propelling mechanisms, meaning you can’t move around in them.

Cruising Houseboats

A cruising houseboat is almost similar to a static houseboat, in terms of design and furnishings. But, it comes with a propelling mechanism, which may be a sail or engine. These are designed for individuals that want to travel around in a floating house. They are mainly built for vacationing.

But, as much as you can move around in a cruising houseboat, you can’t operate it on open or high oceanic seas, meaning you can only cruise with it on small water bodies. Cruising houseboats are not as popular as their static counterparts are.

While there are two main types of houseboats, you will come across numerous types on the market, branching from these two basic ones. Some of the different kinds of houseboats that you will find on the market include:

Pontoons are flat-looking cruising houseboats, mainly made from materials like wood, marine-grade aluminum, plastic, steel or fiberglass. They are mainly designed for vacationers. Pontoons are popular among houseboat lovers because of their practicality, stability and affordable prices. Also, they are easy and safe to operate and their maintenance costs are minimal.

Barges are large houseboats, which can be moved around or permanently anchored at the bay. Barges are the most popular houseboat styles due to their generous amounts of storage space. A conventional barge can accommodate approximately 10 people, making them ideal for families.

Trailerable

Trailerables are houseboats with a narrow and long design. Their narrow design makes them ideal for cruising small river systems and canals. Its name comes from the fact that you can tow it with a vehicle and move it around since it’s lightweight. Trailerables are smaller than the majority of other houseboats. But, if you only wish to spend a short amount of your time in the water, then a Trailerable will be the ideal vessel.

Floating Home

A floating home is a non-cruising houseboat, ideal for people who don’t want to cruise around in their boats. It’s a great retirement home for someone who wants to spend the majority of their time staying on the water. Floating homes are among the cheapest houseboats. They are affordable to build and easy to maintain.

River Houseboat

If you are planning to be living permanently on water, then you should consider building or buying a river houseboat. Houseboats are usually made of fiberglass. Also, they are customizable, meaning you can have them built according to your specifications. River houseboats and you can furnish them with various conveniences.

Full hulls are popular houseboats that you will mainly find in the U.S. Full hulls come with a spacious interior, meaning they can accommodate several people. And thanks to their design, they have higher buoyancy, meaning they can handle rougher waters better than most other types of houseboats.

Just like houseboats, yachts come in different types. Yachts can be categorized based on size and purpose, among others. Let’s take a closer look at the different yachts that fall under each of these categories.

When it comes to size, you can buy a smaller yacht, medium-size yacht, mega yacht or a super yacht. As you may expect, the bigger the yacht, the more it’s going to cost you to buy and maintain.

Smaller Yachts

Smaller yachts range between 10 meters to 20 meters. The majority of smaller yachts are usually privately owned. They are mainly used for water recreational activities like water sports or cruising. These yachts can be sail-driven, motor-driven or a combination of both.

Medium-sized Yachts

Super Yachts

Mega Yachts

These are the biggest yachts currently. They are usually owned by super-rich individuals since they are quite costly. Some are also owned by organizations that offer water tourism.  Megayachts measure around 50 meters long or even more. Similar to superyachts, mega yachts also have a dedicated crew that works round the clock. They are also adequately outfitted with numerous luxurious facilities and amenities like cafeterias, swimming pools, suite rooms, restaurants, gyms, conference banquets and pubs, just to name a few.

Cruiser Yachts

As their name suggests, these yachts are mainly built for moving around or vacationing. Cruiser yachts come in different types and sizes. They are built for long-distance trips. Luxury yachts usually fall under this category.

Sports Cruisers

These yachts are built for short fast traps and water sports activities. They are quite compact and smaller in size than most of the other yachts. And as you may expect, their accommodation spaces are also limited.

Fishing Yachts

Fishing yachts are purposely built for fishing and leisurely activities. They come with adequate space for storing fishing gear. These yachts come with open decks, to make fishing easier. While you can use them in various fishing spots, they are not allowed for deep-sea fishing.

Expedition Yachts

If you love exploring or touring using water vessels, then expedition yachts are the perfect fit for you. They are built for long-distance water trips and vacations. Expedition yachts are given permission to explore remote and uncharted locations, which is usually not the case with cruiser yachts.

Trawler Yachts

Trawler yachts are also fishing vessels. However, they are built for large-scale or commercial fishing. But unlike ordinary fishing yachts, trawler yachts come with some comforts like sleeping bunks, since the crew may spend several months fishing.

Comfort and Livability

You can live on both a houseboat and a yacht. However, yachts tend to be more expensive compared to houseboats per square footage. Therefore, for the average person, a houseboat provides the most practical, affordable and convenient option.

Houseboat Floor Plan

The floor plan of a houseboat resembles that of a conventional house. As for the yacht, its floor plan resembles that of a conventional boat. For a houseboat, there will be a living room, bathroom, bedrooms and a fully-equipped kitchen, meaning it accommodate an entire family.

Considering that houseboats have a shape that is almost similar to that of a residential home, you will notice that their layouts are also similar. So, in case you live in an area where property prices are too high, you can simply opt for a houseboat. You will have almost similar living quarters at an affordable cost.

Yacht Floor Plan

As earlier mentioned, yachts are mainly designed for leisure activities like water sports, boat parties, fishing and weekend getaways. Therefore, they are mainly designed for vacationing and not long-term living in the water.

As for the floor plan, its layout will be similar to that of a boat. However, a yacht will come with more luxury features and comforts compared to a conventional boat. For instance, most speedboats don’t have indoor living spaces. They usually come with a captain’s seat and a bench. Some may also have a low table, but this feature is quite rare in speedboats.

A yacht, on the other hand, will have several luxurious features, which you can’t find in a speedboat. The main issue with yachts is that interior space is quite limited. While it may appear posh and luxurious, it lacks enough space, meaning it’s not ideal for long-term living on the water. Also, yachts tend to have limited headroom, compared to houseboats.

When you compare the two, you will conclude that a houseboat will be cheaper per square footage, compared to a yacht. If you browse the prices for these two water vessels of comparable size, you will notice that a yacht will cost you considerably more than a houseboat.

A houseboat and a yacht are similar in various ways. Both are built for people that want to spend time in the water. But, they also have considerable differences. A houseboat is more of a floating house, designed for those who want to establish a permanent residence on water. Yachts, on the other hand, are ideal for recreational purposes. So, if you are looking to settle permanently close to a water body, then a houseboat will be the ideal choice. On the other hand, if you are planning on going for a vacation or other water-based recreational activities, then a small yacht will serve you well.

What the New Overtime Rule Means for Workers

One of the basic principles of the American workplace is that a hard day’s work deserves a fair day’s pay. Simply put, every worker’s time has value. A cornerstone of that promise is the  Fair Labor Standards Act ’s (FLSA) requirement that when most workers work more than 40 hours in a week, they get paid more. The  Department of Labor ’s new overtime regulation is restoring and extending this promise for millions more lower-paid salaried workers in the U.S.

Overtime protections have been a critical part of the FLSA since 1938 and were established to protect workers from exploitation and to benefit workers, their families and our communities. Strong overtime protections help build America’s middle class and ensure that workers are not overworked and underpaid.

Some workers are specifically exempt from the FLSA’s minimum wage and overtime protections, including bona fide executive, administrative or professional employees. This exemption, typically referred to as the “EAP” exemption, applies when: 

1. An employee is paid a salary,  

2. The salary is not less than a minimum salary threshold amount, and 

3. The employee primarily performs executive, administrative or professional duties.

While the department increased the minimum salary required for the EAP exemption from overtime pay every 5 to 9 years between 1938 and 1975, long periods between increases to the salary requirement after 1975 have caused an erosion of the real value of the salary threshold, lessening its effectiveness in helping to identify exempt EAP employees.

The department’s new overtime rule was developed based on almost 30 listening sessions across the country and the final rule was issued after reviewing over 33,000 written comments. We heard from a wide variety of members of the public who shared valuable insights to help us develop this Administration’s overtime rule, including from workers who told us: “I would love the opportunity to...be compensated for time worked beyond 40 hours, or alternately be given a raise,” and “I make around $40,000 a year and most week[s] work well over 40 hours (likely in the 45-50 range). This rule change would benefit me greatly and ensure that my time is paid for!” and “Please, I would love to be paid for the extra hours I work!”

The department’s final rule, which will go into effect on July 1, 2024, will increase the standard salary level that helps define and delimit which salaried workers are entitled to overtime pay protections under the FLSA. 

Starting July 1, most salaried workers who earn less than $844 per week will become eligible for overtime pay under the final rule. And on Jan. 1, 2025, most salaried workers who make less than $1,128 per week will become eligible for overtime pay. As these changes occur, job duties will continue to determine overtime exemption status for most salaried employees.

The rule will also increase the total annual compensation requirement for highly compensated employees (who are not entitled to overtime pay under the FLSA if certain requirements are met) from $107,432 per year to $132,964 per year on July 1, 2024, and then set it equal to $151,164 per year on Jan. 1, 2025.

Starting July 1, 2027, these earnings thresholds will be updated every three years so they keep pace with changes in worker salaries, ensuring that employers can adapt more easily because they’ll know when salary updates will happen and how they’ll be calculated.

The final rule will restore and extend the right to overtime pay to many salaried workers, including workers who historically were entitled to overtime pay under the FLSA because of their lower pay or the type of work they performed.

The Toyota Land Cruiser is powered by the turbocharged 2.4-liter T24A-FTS inline-4 cylinder engine. Toyota offers this engine with a hybrid system that uses an electric motor that stores energy in a 1.87 kWh Nickel-Metal Hydride battery pack. The 2024 Lexus GX, on the other hand, is powered by the 3.4-liter V35A-FTS twin-turbo V6.

Base Powertrain Comparison

In the 2024 Land Cruiser , the hybrid four-cylinder engine is tuned to produce 326 hp and 465 lb-ft of torque. This engine is paired to an 8-speed automatic transmission and four-wheel-drive as standard. The Lexus GX is more powerful as it makes 349 hp and 479 lb-ft, and it comes with a 10-speed automatic gearbox. Additionally, four-wheel-drive is also standard. Neither the Land Cruiser nor the GX are available with 2WD.

Even though the Land Cruiser and the GX are siblings, the V6 engine is not offered in the Land Cruiser, but the hybrid inline-4 motor is not available on the GX for the US market. While there is no official confirmation, Lexus may introduce a hybrid version of the GX with the same engine as the Land Cruiser, which could make the GX more economical.

Fuel Economy

The Land Cruiser's four-cylinder hybrid powertrain is EPA rated to return 22 MPG in the city and 25 MPG on the highway, for a 23 MPG combined rating. However, the Lexus GX's larger non-electrically assisted V6 is not as efficient. The GX is rated at 15 MPG in the city and 21 MPG on the highway for a combined rating of 17 MPG.

Toyota claims the new Land Cruiser is capable of towing up to a maximum of 6,000 lbs. The default towing capacity of the new Lexus GX is 8,000 lbs. However, the GX 550 Luxury trim is marginally less capable at 6,990 lbs, while the Luxury+ model is even lower at 6,780 lbs. However, any model of the Lexus GX can tow heavier loads than the Land Cruiser.

The switches and dials on the dash are positioned in easy-to-reach areas for the driver that make it user-friendly. Strangely, despite the high price, the base 1958 model offers cloth seats, while leather upholstery is used on the higher trims. Nonetheless, the seats in the Land Cruiser are comfortable, and the interior offers an impressive amount of headroom and legroom for all passengers.

There is clear evidence that the Lexus GX borrows the overall interior design from the Land Cruiser. However, the general vibe in the cabin is quite premium and luxurious as the materials are a step-up from the Toyota. The GX offers an ample amount of interior space in the front and second row, while the third row can be a squeeze for adults. Lexus also offers a six-seat model that swaps the bench for captain's chairs in the second row with heated function.

The 2024 Land Cruiser has an 8-inch touchscreen infotainment system which is quite small for a vehicle of its price range. The base model has a traditional gauge cluster with a 7-in digital screen, the higher models feature a 12.3-inch fully digital gauge cluster, up to six USB charging ports and a wireless charging pad.

In contrast to the Land Cruiser, the Lexus GX offers a larger 14-inch touchscreen infotainment system as standard, which integrates the HVAC controls at the bottom with two dials that control the temperature for the dual-zone climate control. The touchscreen is just as easy to operate, and it features wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The GX also offers the driver with a fully digital 12.3-inch screen for the gauge cluster, up to six USB-C ports, and a wireless smartphone charger.

The 2024 Toyota Land Cruiser is only sold as a two-row five-seat SUV. Behind the rear seats, the Land Cruiser has a cargo volume of 37.5 cu-ft, but it can be extended up to 98 cu-ft with the rear seats folded. The 2024 Lexus GX is offered as a three-row 7-seat SUV by default that offers 10.3 cu-ft of cargo volume. But with the third row folded, the GX offers 40.2 cu-ft of space, which is more than the Land Cruiser. However, with the second row also folded, the space only expands up to 76.9 cu-ft. However, the GX 550 Overtrail models are five-seat only models that offer 45.6 cu-ft of space behind the second row, but can only extend up to 90.5 cu-ft, when folding the second row.

However, Lexus offers an elongated warranty package with a 4 year / 50,000 mile basic warranty, 6 year / 70,000 mile drivetrain warranty, 6 years of corrosion protection and 4 years of roadside assistance.

FIRST DRIVE: Can The 2024 Lexus GX Live Up To The Hype?

Pricing and availability.

The new Land Cruiser 250 is sold in the US in three trims; 1958, Land Cruiser and First Edition, and they are not cheap. The 2024 Toyota Land Cruiser starts at a price of $55,950 for the base '1958' model. The mid-spec 'Land Cruiser' model costs $61,950. The most expensive version is the 'First Edition' model, which costs $74,950.

However, its luxurious sibling, the Lexus GX's asking price is comparable, but offers more equipment. The base 2024 Lexus GX 550 model costs $64,250 for the Premium model, while the Premium+ model costs $69,250. The GX 550 Luxury and Luxury+ models are priced $77,250 and $81,250, respectively, making them the most expensive versions of the SUV. However, Lexus introduced the Overtrail line with the new GX that offers a more off-road oriented design and equipment. The GX 550 Overtrail and Overtrail+ models are priced at $69,250 and $77,250 respectively.
