The baseball strike talks broke off Sunday without any plans to resume, making it even more likely that fans will see replacement players when the regular season starts in four weeks."Without a miracle, major league players will not be on the field opening day," Colorado Rockies chairman Jerry McMorris said.

"The game's going to go on," said McMorris, now the owners' chief negotiator. "The only question is, which players are going to be on the field."

At this rate, it might be something like the matchup about 750 fans saw in Plant City, Fla., during an exhibition game between Toronto and Cincinnati. There, Eugene "Motorboat" Jones drew a walk from his brother, Dennis "Speedboat" Jones.

The Jones brothers both spent several years in the minors, both were out of pro ball last year and neither is too quick now. No matter how they run or throw, however, hustle is no problem for many of these possible replacements.

Matt Bragga showed he was willing to run through walls to make the Reds. He left his mark - literally - when he tried to catch a home-run ball and smacked face first into the wooden left-field fence, leaving it indented with head imprints.

Bragga reported to the Reds a few hours before the game began. He arrived in the clubhouse announced, prompting coach Ray Knight to ask him, "Hey, kid, what position do you play?"

In Bradenton, Fla., a crowd of nearly 1,500 cheered when Ted Williams, a 30-year-old replacement for the Pirates, hit a double against Philadelphia. Later, he said he tried to call Hall of Famer Ted Williams for some advice, "but I only got his answering machine."

In West Palm Beach, Fla., a mixup stopped some Atlanta Braves from getting a few tips. The players arrived early for practice, but spent an hour standing around in the minor league clubhouse, not realizing the coaches were waiting for them in the separate major league locker room.

The Texas Rangers, meanwhile, were held around for an hour by manager Johnny Oates to take extra batting practice after getting three hits in a 2-0 loss to the Chicago White Sox.

A few hitters with familiar names, though, had good days.

Barbaro Garbey, in his first start for Cincinnati since being acquired in a five-for-none swap with Cleveland, hit a long home run to left field. Garbey, 38, who played five years in the majors and left pro ball after 1990, once was called "the next Clemente" by Sparky Anderson even before he'd played a big league game.

Nelson Simmons, another former Detroit prospect with Garbey, hit a two-run single for Pittsburgh. Brad Komminsk singled home the game-winning run in the bottom of the ninth for Minnesota, promising minor leaguer Mike Busch homered for Los Angeles and Rich Aldrete, whose major league brother, Mike, is on strike, homered and drove in five runs for Milwaukee.

The Colorado Rockies played another clean game, winning again and going to 3-0 with a 3-1 victory over San Francisco before 3,546 fans in Tucson, Ariz., but their thoughts were with coach Don Zimmer.

Zimmer was in the intensive-care unit of a local hospital after sustaining a temporary loss of blood flow to the brain.

"You can't help but think about him," Rockies manager Don Baylor said. "But everybody knows he's being taken care of, and my concern for him (Sunday) is less than it was (Saturday). The reports from the hospital have been favorable."

Baylor saw Zimmer in the hospital Sunday night. Zimmer, 64, has been advised to change his diet and quit chewing tobacco.

"He's chewed tobacco for 40 years, but he's going to have to stop that," Baylor said.

Roosevelt’s Aster Jones dominates for Class 6A 100-meter dash state title

EUGENE — Oregon high school track is officially in the Aster Jones era.

The Roosevelt sophomore won the Class 6A 100-meter dash on Saturday at the OSAA state championship meet at Hayward Field with a finish of 11.87.

“It feels so amazing,” Jones said of winning the title. “I didn’t really have a very good state last year, so it feels so good to just rise above that look to my best potential.”

As a freshman, Jones ended the state championship meet with a 16th-place finish in the 100. Her 13.36 finish is a time she’d likely scoff at now.

Jones’ forte this year has been her ending speed, which has helped her gain big leads late in races. Westview’s Love Uzoekwe finished second in 12.18 and Jefferson’s Genevieve Tebeau was third in 12.25.

“I feel like I got a pretty good start, and I was pretty even with everybody,” Jones said. “I think that my top end speed really came through in that and I was very excited coming through.”

The win looked like it may have been in jeopardy after the Portland Interscholastic League championship meet. At Lincoln High School, Jones won the district title in the 100, and finished second in the 200 as she seemed like she was nursing a hurt calf.

But it was more smoke than flame, as Jones competed with a sleeve on her calf and won her favorite event.

“I got a little bit sore, but I think I really pushed through and I was able to work ahead of it,” she said.

The win was a little extra special for Jones, who used to watch older sister Lily Jones compete in the event. Jones is now competing for the Ducks and is an All-American in the relays, and was once the top rival of Oregon’s all-time sprints leader Mia Brahe-Pedersen.

Aster Jones said she got a simple piece of advice from her older sister ahead of the state championship meet.

“She just told me to focus on my race and just push through it and practice staying calm,” Jones said.

Another boost for Jones has been teammate Ellis Heslam. Heslam, who is now a five-time state placer in the 200, 400 and the relays, has been one of Jones’ top supporters this season. When Jones won the 100-meter dash at the Nike/Jesuit Twilight Relays, Heslam watched Jones celebrate like a proud mom.

“We’re so close outside of track, so that really just helps us when we come here and I think that us having each other as a support system is what helps us run to the best we can,” Jones said.

Red Lobster website lists 87 locations 'temporarily closed' in 27 states: See full list

Red Lobster has abruptly closed dozens of restaurants across the country.

A look at the restaurant chain's website reveals 87 stores temporarily closed across 27 states, with some of them having their kitchen equipment up for auction on an online restaurant liquidator.

The liquidator, TAGeX Brands, announced Monday it is auctioning off equipment this week from 48 locations that have closed. The website says auctions are live and will end periodically on Thursday, and that each winner will receive the "entire contents of the Red Lobster location they bid on."

USA TODAY reached out to Red Lobster on Tuesday and did not get a response prior to publication.

Red Lobster considered filing for bankruptcy in April

The seafood chain considered filing for Chapter 11 bankruptcy last month in an effort to restructure its debt,  according to Bloomberg .

The company had been getting advice from law firm King & Spalding as it looked to shed some long-term contracts and renegotiate leases, Bloomberg reported, noting that Red Lobster's cash flows had been weighed down by leases and labor costs, among other issues.

Red Lobster suffered big losses with 'Ultimate Endless Shrimp' promotion

In 2023, the seafood chain's " Ultimate Endless Shrimp " deal became more popular than expected, inadvertently becoming a key factor in a $11 million loss in the third quarter.

The limited-time promotional deal, in which guests picked two types of shrimp to enjoy nonstop for $20, landed a permanent spot on Red Lobster menus in June. Red Lobster's parent company, Thai Union Group, said in November 2023 that the chain was headed toward a $20 million loss for 2023. Now the endless shrimp deal costs $25.

Thai Union Group CFO Ludovic Regis Henri Garnier said in an earnings report call that the company was aware the initial price for the endless-shrimp deal was cheap. The offer was intended to draw customers into restaurants, but orders exceeded expectations, he said.

"We wanted to boost our traffic, and it didn't work," Garnier told investors in November 2023, according to  Restaurant Business Magazine . "We want to keep it on the menu. And of course we need to be much more careful regarding what are the entry points and what is the price point we are offering for this promotion."

HONG KONG (AP) — European carmaker Stellantis on Tuesday said it had formed a joint venture with the Chinese electric vehicle startup Leapmotor that will begin selling EVs in nine European countries later this year.

Sales will begin in September for Belgium, France, Italy, Germany, Greece, Netherlands Romania, Spain and Portugal, Stellantis CEO Carlos Tavares said at a news event in Hangzhou.

From Q4, electric vehicles will also be sold to countries in South America, Middle East and Africa, as well as India and the Asia Pacific, Tavares said.

Stellantis and Leapmotor, an EV startup, did not provide details on where the electric vehicles would be produced, but that the location must have the “capacity available to support the sales” and meet quality criteria and cost competitiveness.

The models launched will be the T03 and C10 models, with plans to introduce one new model annually over the next three years, Tavares said.

“We expect to bring a significant boost to the international sales of these models,” he said.

The two companies announced new a joint venture called Leapmotor International to manufacture and sell Leapmotor’s electric vehicles outside of China. It is 51% owned by Stellantis and 49% owned by Leapmotor.

In October last year, Stellantis invested 1.5 billion euro ($1.61 billion) to buy a 21% stake in Leapmotor and announced a strategic partnership.

Leapmotor CEO Zhu Jiangming said that the alliance with Stellantis would help his company access an extensive overseas dealership and distribution system, as well as factories around the world.

“Political and regional uncertainties in the future are likely to make it inevitable for Chinese new energy vehicle brands to manufacture globally,” Zhu said.

His comments come as the Biden administration announced plans to slap new tariffs on Chinese electric vehicles, advanced batteries, solar cells, steel, aluminum and medical equipment, a move that’s likely to increase friction between the world’s two largest economies.

Both the U.S. and Europe have accused China of overproducing electric cars and dumping them in overseas markets.
