LIFE Design: Oceanco’s revolutionary approach to design

The shipyard has elevated its design proposition once again through its new state-of-the-art approach….

Image for article LIFE Design: Oceanco’s revolutionary approach to design

Oceanco has always been recognised as one of the most forward-thinking shipyards when it comes to design, having created some of the world’s most iconic superyachts, such as M/Y Alfa Nero , M/Y Jubilee and S/Y Black Pearl . Now, in collaboration with Lateral Naval Architects , the shipyard has elevated its proposition once again through an approach called LIFE Design, which synergises the elegance and performance of Oceanco’s vessels with a carefully considered approach to their environmental impact.

In conjunction with its fully custom approach to design, Oceanco has outlined four key parameters which contribute to its considered design approach comprising:

·      L engthened waterline,

·      I nnovative lay-out,

·      F uel Efficient hull design,

·      E co-Conscious technology.

Together, Oceanco and Lateral Naval Architects will create an intricate technical solution within these four parameters for each project and form a range of optimal dimensions that result in a more refined vessel. But Oceanco’s LIFE Design approach extends past the technology behind the project, and throughout the course of the project’s existence.

Together, Oceanco and Lateral Naval Architects will create an intricate technical solution within these four parameters for each project and form a range of optimal dimensions that result in a more refined vessel.

“A fully customisable yacht is often seen as a highly luxurious purchase,” says Marcel Onkenhout, CEO of Oceanco. Thanks to Oceanco’s LIFE Design it’s now an ecologically-conscious one too.” The shipyard considers a yacht to be an investment that lasts a lifetime and therefore strives to ensure that every detail will continue to exceed the owner’s expectations for years to come.

The optimised, slender hull form of the LIFE Design approach has been devised to minimise the yacht’s resistance, which in turn improves the efficiency and fuel consumption of the vessel. According to Oceanco, this innovative, elongated hull configuration has resulted in performance figures that sit at the very top of MARIN’s statistical database for modern motoryacht forms.

oceanco yacht fleet

Through the use of innovative technologies, the two developing parties have created a single deck engine room, a rare feature for a yacht at the upper end of the size spectrum, resulting in enhanced guest spaces and more options for entertainment space close to the waterline. Furthermore, additional guest accommodation can also be incorporated into spaces which would be typically occupied by the engine room.

Yachts that are developed based on the LIFE Design approach will be positioned within what Oceanco refers to as the ‘virtuous circle’. Here the yacht will benefit from retaining its primary required technical spaces, while offering greater flexibility and usage of its luxury spaces, in comparison to the overall volume of the vessel. But also, the yachts that have been designed based on these parameters will benefit from a considerable reduction in fuel and maintenance costs.

The yachts benefit from a 30 per cent reduction in fuel usage, compared to a conventional yacht of 3400gt, alongside its considerable reduction in overall energy consumption. Furthermore, the four parameters mean that LIFE Design yachts are able to meet every ECO class requirement and operate in all Emission Control Areas (ECAs), thanks to its reduction in overall air emissions.

oceanco yacht fleet

Through leading Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD), traditional methods and extensive physical model tests the LIFE Design approach can boast the highest possible hydrodynamic performance. The collective efforts of Oceanco, Lateral Naval Architects and MARIN have resulted in a series of exceptional factors, which not only relate to the economic impact of the vessels created under this approach, but also extend to improvements in stability and safety.

The low-profile characteristic of the design approach will deliver an unprecedented level of stability and stiffness to the yacht, which results in exceptional comfort in roll. This, coupled with state-of-the-art stabilisation from zero-speed roll fins, or magnus rotors, creates exceptional comfort at sea, in turn enhancing the overall experience on board.

A reduction in pitch motion is inherently linked to longer waterline lengths, meaning that the elongated hulls of the LIFE Design projects will benefit from low pitch motions and enhanced seakeeping characteristics.

With all this in mind, Oceanco, together with Lateral Naval Architects, has managed to incorporate all of these parameters into immensely elegant yachts, both in their proportion and form.

109m in-build superyacht Y720 marks first project for new Oceanco yard

By Katia Damborsky   5 September 2019

The hull of the 109m/358ft motor yacht ‘Oceanco Y720’ is the first project to enter Oceanco’s new facilities in Zwijndrecht, in the Netherlands.

First acquired by Oceanco in May, the yard’s new construction facilities welcomed their first project yesterday.

Known only as Y720 , the vessel will undergo all remaining construction at the Zwijndrecht facilities, including the installation of her superstructure.

She will then be transferred back to Oceanco’s Alblasserdam headquarters, located just 10km down river, for outfitting.

Details about the yacht remain under wraps, but she is thought to be one of the largest motor yachts currently being built in the Netherlands.

Oceanco luxury yacht Project Y720 under construction

The yard has previously said that two 100 metre superyacht projects would be entering their new construction yard by the end of the year.

The new 28-acre site has offices and conferences centres on the premises, as well as facilities for outfitting, construction, painting and sandblasting.

The facilities will be used primarily for refit works and manufacturing steel hulls for new builds. However, they will also be used for educational purposes.

In a statement, Oceanco has said; "Oceanco is taking a leadership role in creating a platform in the superyacht sector for propagating economic and sustainable opportunities in a circular economy which is intended to lead to cost savings, innovation, job creation and a more sensible use of energy and raw materials."

Y720 will undergo all remaining construction at the Zwijndrecht facilities, including the installation of her superstructure.

It is not yet known whether Y720 will be available for superyacht charters .

Moscow to buy another 500 electric buses in 2022

oceanco yacht fleet

  • Electric buses

The Moscow city government plans to procure another 500 electric buses in 2022, according to Mosgortrans, who operates buses and trams in the Russian capital. Moscow already runs 1,000 electric buses, and the city targets having a 100% electric bus fleet by 2030.

Mosgortrans says the 1,000 electric buses currently running on 66 routes in Moscow comprise one of the largest zero-emission fleets in Europe and America. “In December, Moscow has received the 1000th electric bus assembled by the Russian manufacturer Kamaz,” said Maksim Liksutov, the Deputy Mayor of Moscow for Transport. He added that Moscow planned to purchase 500 more eco-friendly buses this year, which is slightly up from previous announcements . Mosgortrans initially scheduled 420 vehicles.

For the new 500 buses for 2022, the city government said it would use funds from green bonds. The latter is a fixed-income instrument, i.e. a bond issued by the government in this case, which provides investors with a return in the form of fixed periodic payments and the eventual return of principal at maturity. Mosgortrans says the green bonds in Russia were specifically earmarked to raise money for climate and environmental projects. The surface public transport operator added that nearly half of the Moscow electric bus fleet have been financed by green bonds.

“Nowadays, green bonds are in high demand in Russia. All funds from this project will be used to purchase electric buses and the construction of new metro stations,” said Vladimir Efimov, the Deputy Mayor of Moscow for Economic Policy and Property and Land Relations.

As reported , Mosgortrans aims to convert Moscow’s entire bus fleet to electric by 2030. In the nearer term, the operator will buy and take into service 2,000 electric buses and install over 500 charging stations by 2023.

At present, Mosgortrans claims the existing electric bus fleet has run 60 million kilometres and carried more than 156 million passengers. So far, there are 168 charging depots in Moscow, with another 115 to be integrated next year.

As with previous announcements, the latest release does not disclose details on pricing or the vehicle type. Until now, Mosgortrans has relied on GAZ and Kamaz for electric city buses and calls the model the “Moscow electric bus”. Kamaz has opened a dedicated electric bus plant last April , located at the Sokolniki Auto Repair and Construction Plant (SVARZ), a branch of Mosgortrans in Moscow. The Kamaz plant can produce 500 electric buses a year and plans include another production building to increase annual output by 200 electric buses.

Mosgortrans claims the vehicles manufactured in SVARZ were up there with the international competition in terms of technical and operational characteristics. “And this while it is 30% cheaper than models of electric buses made by other world manufacturers, e.g. Polish and German companies.”

Donald Trump plans to build $5bn fleet of 'yachts with weapons' for US Navy

Donald Trump has claimed he would provide the US Navy with "yachts with weapons" to rival China's ever-growing naval assets.

In April 2020, while Trump was still president, shipbuilding company Fincantieri announced it would begin construction on its first-ever Constellation-class frigate - a warship capable of launching guided missiles.

This was one year before US officials predicted that China's navy would significantly increase to include more surface combatants - a type of warships designed for warfare on the water's surface.

Then, the Pentagon's 2023 China Military Power Report claimed the People's Liberation Army (PLA) had 370 warships, which it plans to increase to 395 by 2025 and 435 by 2030. Currently, the US has 470 navy ships at its disposal.

In the same year, Fincantieri was awarded a $526 million contract from the Department of Defense to build even more Constellation-class frigates, which in total are valued at $5.5 billion. The first one is set to be unveiled in 2026.

READ MORE: Trump issues major warning to Netanyahu as Gaza death toll continues to soar

In an interview with radio host Hugh Hewitt on Thursday, Trump said: "[The frigates] were beautiful ... Because I'm into beauty, to be honest with you. They look like yachts with lots of weapons on them, lots of weapons.

"They've really come out good, but we were giving out a lot of ships. And then this guy came in [Joe Biden], and he has no idea what he's doing. No idea whatsoever. China is on a shipbuilding message like nobody's seen before."

In the interview, Trump also claimed to have "rebuilt to entire military" while providing "great jobs" for people to work on the construction of the "yachts with weapons."

He added: "First of all, it's jobs. It's very important because it's jobs, great jobs. But you know, I rebuilt the entire military, and the one thing was, the ships are, you know, they take longer to do. We were set to do something great. We started the process."

Rajan Menon, an expert in defense and international relations, warned of the cost associated with building such ships, which could then be wiped out in a future conflict.

He told Newsweek : "Frigates may be 'beautiful' in Trump's eyes, but they are far more expensive to build than yachts - to which he likens them.

"More importantly, warships, as most recently demonstrated by Ukraine's repeated, successful attacks on Russia's Black Sea Fleet, provide big targets for the most advanced anti-ship missiles."

Menon added that, while China's naval capabilites don't currently have the power to outweigh the US's, they "are almost certain to increase, in quantity and quality."
