Vincitore Southern Cross 52 368

A grand-prix raceboat is expected to be sailed hard, put away wet, and then sold once its competitive sell-by date has passed. Consequently, in this realm of custom, stripped-down one-offs, there isn’t much demand for dual-purpose boats with proper berths and other cruising accoutrements. With IRC’s expanding influence, however, flat-out racers are regularly fending off stealthy crossover designs on the racecourse. One such boat is Vincitore, the grand-prix crossover designed by Reichel/Pugh for New Zealand’s Southern Cross Yachts.

At first glance one could easily mistake the boat for a TP 52, but peek down the companionway and there’s no mistaking its “cruiseability.” If you’re wondering how well this cruiser races, its results stand as Exhibit A: at the 2008 Rolex Big Boat Series, Vincitore, under charter to Chicago sailor Jim Mitchell, lost to Jim Kilroy’s professionally sailed and IRC-optimized TP52 Samba Pa Ti by a single point.

“I’ve sailed 52s a lot,” says Rodney Keenan, of Quantum Sails New Zealand, who laid down the boat’s initial design brief, “and with this boat we wanted a fast boat that would be more comfortable, where you didn’t feel like you were disappearing into a cave when you went off watch.”

Built by Davie Norris Boatbuilders in New Zealand, the Southern Cross 52 is a semi-custom concept. Historically, the bane of dual-purpose boats is the weight of such interior conveniences as a proper galley, enclosed head, comfortable berths, and in Vincitore’s case, cherry wood floors, but Keenan says Norris went to great lengths to keep the boat’s all-up weight under control. “IRC gives credit for having these things in the boat, and how we look at it is that if you’re not paying a penalty for carrying it, then we might as well have it if it improves the look of the boat. The boat will be a great performer now, and when you do eventually sell it, it has an easy appeal for the club sailor who wants to get away with the wife every so often.”

As far as its systems, Keenan says there’s nothing unique. He’s carried over ideas from a lot of different boats with the ultimate aim in making it a good all-around boat-inshore or offshore. “It’ll do 30 knots and will go upwind well while having an interior that’s not a Swan but very livable,” says Keenan.

Mitchell, once a partner in a TP52, chartered the boat for a number of U.S. IRC events in 2008, including the Rolex BBS, the U.S. IRC Nationals, and November’s IRC East Coasts. In the later two events, the boat turned in strong performances, but was hindered by gear failures. Two sisterships are being built, one for a Canadian owner, the other destined for Chicago. The Chicago boat, says Keenan, will be pushed a little further to the racing end of the boat’s dual-purpose scale.

Vela Al Terzo: the traditional sail in the Venetian lagoon and in the Adriatic Sea

Vela Al Terzo: the traditional sail in the Venetian lagoon and in the Adriatic Sea

Vela Al Terzo could be translated with “sail at a third”… at a third of what? Well, let me try to tell you more about this living heritage!

If you come to Venice, you may notice some traditional wooden boats with colorful sails, silently moving around the lagoon. You will then find the same colorful sails in other cities facing the coast of the Adriatic Sea, not just in the Venetian lagoon. Cervia, Cattolica, Cesenatico south of Venice, but also Rovinj in Croatia: all towns sharing the special tradition of the “vela al terzo” and keeping it alive.

Vela Al Terzo: what are the main characteristics of this unique sail?

Vela Al Terzo refers to the fact that the sail is pulled all the way up the mast and its spar, the long wooden post on the upper part of the sail, remains for two thirds below the mast and one third above.

The colors of the Vela Al Terzo and its maritime “heraldry”

However, if this explains the technical term, the first characteristic that will simply leave you in full wonder is the kaleidoscopic of the sails’ colors. Each sail is differently painted. Traditional colors in the northern Adriatic Sea area are yellow ochre, brown, black and red. While moving towards the southern part of the Adriatic Sea colors of the sails change and blue, green and white appear more frequently, even in sails differently designed.

Regata del Presidente, Sept. 13th, 2020

While the background often displays some geometrical patterns, the “vela al terzo” sails are often characterized by some decorative elements which have brought scholars to adopt the terminology of a “maritime heraldry”, even if there is no nobility involved. So you may find a shoe, a glass of wine, seahorses, octopus, crosses, stars, as well as ladders, eels, lions, the sun and much more.

A boom, a spar and a special form

The “vela at terzo” is also characterized by the presence of a boom, a prominent horizontal spar extending from the base of the mast; the base of the sail therefore attaches to the boom.

Indeed, the sail itself has a shape of a truncated triangle, whose origins are still debated.

The historical development of the Vela Al Terzo

There is no written history of sails, but some researchers have tried to define the evolution of the “vela al terzo”’s unique tradition of the Adriatic Sea. Also known as the trabacolo’s sail (see my post on this special boat here: www.seevenice.it/en/a-boat-that-helped-create-a-miracle-called-venice-the-trabacolo/ ), the vela al terzo is the result of the encountering of two ancient traditions.

The Square sail of the Po Valley

Along the Po Valley, rivers and lakes used to be essential for the communications and the trading of goods. Nowadays rivers are not so much considered — because of the extensive use of the railway network or trucks —, but rivers and lakes once connected Venice and its lagoon all the way to Milan or Turin. Along these waterways you would find boats using the “square sail”. Tall and quite narrow, the square sail was designed to try to catch the wind as high as possible. The wind would strike the sail on its aft side, from the stern.

The Latin Sail of the Mediterranean tradition

In the early middle ages, in the Mediterranean Sea, sailboats would use a different sail, called the “Latin sail”. Similar to the vela al terzo, but with a major difference. No boom below.

On one side you had a sail struck by the wind from the back only, on the other side you had another sail whose limit was the impossibility to move the Center of effort (COE) towards the stern of the boat. In other words the point at which all the forces acting on the sails are concentrated in the latin sail could not be moved backwards.

Vela Al Terzo, regatta in the southern lagoon, May 26th, 2019

The Venetian lagoon as a niche

But what about if you are in a lagoon, a borderline geographical niche, where you need the COE to be drawn backwards so as to control the angle of the sail to the wind? Somewhere where you need the sailboat to have more power while sailing towards the wind?

vincitore sailboat

In the middle of the 17th century this special sail, the vela al terzo, appeared and as long as motorboats would not show up, it could be admired all over the Adriatic Sea.

A major reason for the development of this sail is of course the environment of the lagoon which influenced the construction of traditional boats, too. Shallow waters and tides explain why lagoon boats have a flat bottom, no keel (and are easy to be driven leeway), use huge see-saw rudders, which can be pulled up when the water is too shallow…

Fishermen in the Venetian lagoon

Fishermen loved this sail because after placing the fishing nets in the shallow water in the lagoon, they would use the leeway movement to drag them. But not just. Emblems were chosen to identify the family. From afar, they would become visible when getting back home. These sails would also work to give signals, asking for help when needed. A social recognition sign, often with a magical, protective power to hopefully keep dangers away.

vincitore sailboat

Not to mention it was a work of art. It all started with the women sewing the sail. They lay the sail on a meadow and started dying it using a sponge imbued with natural earth colors, which would also work as anti-mold. After dying the sail, you dragged it in the salt water so the salt fixed the colors.

A humble boat with a humble sail, but worth a scientific research

Count Alessandro Pericle Ninni, a naturalist scientist, and Angelo Marella, a man with the passion of making wonderful miniature boat models, started in 1880 a research on these sails “vela al terzo” in Venice and Chioggia. They catalogued and watercolored over 1000 of them. They went on for ten years and this amazing collection (together with the boat models) was first part of the Correr Museum in Venice to be eventually donated to the Museum of Natural Science in Venice at its foundation in 1923.

The Vela Al Terzo nowadays

After the foundation of the first sailing clubs in the early 1980s, and in particular of the Associazione Vela al Terzo , the creation of a school to teach young generations (and not just) how to sail, the Championship arranged every year in the lagoon, both south and north, over 360 sails numbers… the yearly arranged Sailing from Venice to Rovinj along the coast and finally the major project The Red Regatta by Melissa McGill, well, this tradition is alive and kicking.

Why does this tradition deserve to be popular?

The thing is that it is not just a sail. Sustainability is more and more considered a priority and wooden sailboats are the future. Sailboats with vela al terzo are respectful towards the lagoon. In a lagoon, it is easier to protect traditions, especially because of its borderline nature. These sailboats are comfortable, you can eat, sleep inside them but especially they also educate you. Oh yes, they teach you the right speed with which you really discover the uniqueness of the lagoon.

Significantly, last weekend a polluting cruise ship docked in Chioggia, the town south of the lagoon. Chioggia used to be the queen of the Adriatic Sea with its bragozzi sailboats and colorful vela al terzo sails, but its tradition is now almost lost. Just next door the cruise ship, for the first time, a regatta of sailboats within the Marciliana Palio Festival with the vela al terzo took place: because there are alternatives.

The theoretical maximum speed that a displacement hull can move efficiently through the water is determined by it's waterline length and displacement. It may be unable to reach this speed if the boat is underpowered or heavily loaded, though it may exceed this speed given enough power. Read more.

Classic hull speed formula:

Hull Speed = 1.34 x √LWL

Max Speed/Length ratio = 8.26 ÷ Displacement/Length ratio .311 Hull Speed = Max Speed/Length ratio x √LWL

Sail Area / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the power of the sails relative to the weight of the boat. The higher the number, the higher the performance, but the harder the boat will be to handle. This ratio is a "non-dimensional" value that facilitates comparisons between boats of different types and sizes. Read more.

SA/D = SA ÷ (D ÷ 64) 2/3

  • SA : Sail area in square feet, derived by adding the mainsail area to 100% of the foretriangle area (the lateral area above the deck between the mast and the forestay).
  • D : Displacement in pounds.

Ballast / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the stability of a boat's hull that suggests how well a monohull will stand up to its sails. The ballast displacement ratio indicates how much of the weight of a boat is placed for maximum stability against capsizing and is an indicator of stiffness and resistance to capsize.

Ballast / Displacement * 100

Displacement / Length Ratio

A measure of the weight of the boat relative to it's length at the waterline. The higher a boat’s D/L ratio, the more easily it will carry a load and the more comfortable its motion will be. The lower a boat's ratio is, the less power it takes to drive the boat to its nominal hull speed or beyond. Read more.

D/L = (D ÷ 2240) ÷ (0.01 x LWL)³

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds.
  • LWL: Waterline length in feet

Comfort Ratio

This ratio assess how quickly and abruptly a boat’s hull reacts to waves in a significant seaway, these being the elements of a boat’s motion most likely to cause seasickness. Read more.

Comfort ratio = D ÷ (.65 x (.7 LWL + .3 LOA) x Beam 1.33 )

The VICTORY 21 was first manufactured by Henry R. McCune (later the builder of the YORKTOWN sailboats) as a one-design class boat. Some 126 boats were built before the operation was sold to Wesco Marine in 1964. Another model called the AURORA 21 had the same hull but with a larger cabin. Changes to the original design made by Wesco included making the cockpit self-bailing and installing a sliding hatch on the cabin. Between 1969 and 1970, the boats were built by Coronado Yachts. Later, production was resumed by Catalina Yachts where it became the CAPRI VICTORY.

President John F. Kennedy’s beloved sailboat Victura (Latin for “about to conquer”) is a 25-foot Wianno Senior sloop purchased in 1932 as a 15th birthday gift from his parents. It is on the Victura that he taught his wife Jackie to sail and also where the Kennedy family enjoyed their love of sailing on Cape Cod.

John F. Kennedy was an avid sailor, having won many sailing events – including the Nantucket Sound Star Class Championship Cup in 1936, and the MacMillan Cup and East Coast Collegiate Championships in 1938 (with his brother Joe). He enjoyed many boats throughout his life, including a 92-foot wooden presidential yacht that served five presidents and the same yacht that he renamed the Honey Fitz after his maternal grandfather. However, it was the Victura that was JFK’s cherished boat and the very boat that he sketched on many of his documents in meetings during his presidency.

The Victura was struck by lightning in 1936 and rescued from ruin by John F. Kennedy as he dragged it onto a beach during a 1944 hurricane. The Victura also escaped ruin in December 2003 when a fire swept through Crosby Yacht Yard in Osterville, Massachusetts.

5 modern wineries in Russia’s South that are worth visiting

1. Abrau-Dyurso: Russia ’s best sparkling wine

In November 1870, Alexander II ordered to build a winery near Lake Abrau.

In November 1870, Alexander II ordered to build a winery near Lake Abrau.

This winery on the shores of Lake Abrau was founded during the time of Tsar Alexander II. Since then, it has survived German occupation and a factory explosion. Today, it’s the largest center in Russia for wine-making and tourism.

The winery in the foothills of the Navagir Mountains, not far from the Black Sea, released its first shipment of sparkling wine in 1898. Afterwards, the assortment only broadened, including still wines, alcohol-free and strong alcohol beverages.

Aside from learning about the factory’s history, the process of wine-making and its wine-tasting, Abrau-Dyurso offers unusual tours. During one of them, visitors learn about the secrets of Abrau-Dyurso. The tour program has walks along the winery’s dim underground tunnels, a meeting with local ghosts, the trial of a “drunken staircase” and tells about the legend of an unhappy Circassian young woman whose tears remain as a stream over a rock.

Among Abrau-Dyurso’s vineyards, which cover 3,300 hectares, there are two observation decks offering a view of the grapevines and the Black Sea, as well as the emerald-green Lake Abrau. People come here to enjoy the romantic and astonishing sunsets, with a glass of sparkling wine in hand.

Abrau-Dyurso is also a resort with a sailing club, a beach, hotels and campsites. There’s a campsite for travelers with tents, an eco-campsite with cabins in the woods, as well as a car campsite at Round Lake for tourists who journey with trailers.

Wine-tasting in the vineyards of the Southern Wine Company.

On the southern shore of the Taman Peninsula, between two estuaries – Kisiltashskiy and Tsokur – unfolds the vineyards of the Southern Wine Company, which is a part of the Ochakovo company.

Its vineyards occupy about 1,500 hectares and they grow classic European grape varieties, as well as indigenous varieties – Tsimlyansk black; Saperavi northern; and Citron Magaracha.

Wine bath.

Tourists come here for the winery and vineyard tours, as well as for wine tasting in a pavilion with a view of the estuaries’ expanse. During the harvest season you can crush grapes by foot in a wooden tub or take a wine bath. A hydro-massage tub is filled with water mixed with wine, berry and grape leaf extracts, aromatic oil and flowers. All that’s left for you to do is to enjoy the wine with every cell of your body.

3. Skalisty Bereg: wine and stars

Winery building resembles a light-gray pebble.

Winery building resembles a light-gray pebble.

The modern winery Skalisty Bereg (Rocky Coast) perfectly suits the local landscape – its shape resembles a light-gray pebble. In the lower part of the winery, sitting on the cliffs of the Semisamsky Mountains, there are workshops; the upper part hosts a tasting hall and a wine shop. A panoramic terrace offers a view of the vineyards and the sea shore.

The first vineyards were planted in 2011. Vines of three white varieties were planted: Riesling; Sauvignon blanc; and Chardonnay, along with five red varieties: Pinot noir; Merlot; Cabernet Sauvignon; Cabernet Franc; and Krasnostop.

Starry sky above vineyards.

The vineyards are situated on a rocky coast – at a height of 150 to 250 meters above sea level. They neighbor old conifer and juniper-pistachio forests. It’s worth taking the winery’s “Wine and Stars” tour – this can serve both as a romantic date and a scientific lecture. In good weather, when the clouds don’t drape the sky, you can look into a modern telescope on the winery’s observation deck and see the Moon’s craters, as well as galactic nebulae and the star clusters of the northern hemisphere.

Some of the best Riesling wines are produced at the family winery of Alexander Sikorsky in Semigorye Valley. The vineyards occupy 47 hectares, growing varieties like Bordeaux blend, Burgundy varieties, Riesling and Krasnostop.

During a tour around the Sikory Estate guests will have a walk among picturesque vineyards, a deep dive into the secrets of wine making and a tasting of local wines. In the wine cellar for wine aging, you should pay attention to the concrete spheres that are unique in Russia. Due to their shape and the effect of the external temperature, these spheres help the wine proceed through the sediment mixing in a natural way.

At the end of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century, Cabernet Myskhako was considered one of the best red wines of the Russian Empire. The first vine was planted here in 1869. During Soviet times, the winery was the favorite holiday spot of the Communist Party elite, and at the beginning of the 2000s the winery was an official supplier to the Kremlin.

However, in 2013 the company faced financial problems. It gained a new lease on life only in 2021 when it was thoroughly modernized. In 2022, 14 hectares of new vineyards were planted – with the Chardonnay and Marselan varieties. In total, Myskhako has 227 hectares of vineyards.

Apart from a tour of the vineyards and the wine production facilities, guests are invited to visit the historic wine tasting hall, which was opened in 1973 for Leonid Brezhnev’s arrival in nearby Novorossiysk.

How long have you been doing photography? I began in 2004 and mainly like to do street photography.

Can you give us a short description of your city?  Krasnodar is the capital of the Krasnodar Kray (or, as it is commonly called, the Kuban), Russia's southernmost region. Two-thirds of the Kray is plains, one-third is mountains – the Northern Caucasus. It is washed by two seas: the Black and the Azov. The city's former name was Yekaterinodar, in honor of Tsarina Catherine II, who gave Kuban to the local cossacks and who founded the city here in 1793. Krasnodar is Russia's agricultural kingdom.

What is something about your area that only locals would know? (1) There is a legend that, when Shukhov's Hyperboloid Tower was filled with water, a local kept a crocodile there. (2) Krasnodar has the world's highest number of malls per capita. (3) In the summer, Krasnodar's taxi drivers charge extra to turn on their air conditioning.

Which places or sites are a must for someone to see if they visit your area? The ship crossing in Adygey. The local VDNKh that has been turned into "Skazka," a collection of children's parks. The skate park in the forest near the Olymp Sporting Center. The ancient Vsesvyatskoye Graveyard in the center of the city.

You can often meet such a beautiful letter " E" in Krasnodar. The reason is that earlier Krasnodar was named Yekaterinodar, because Yekaterina the great presented these lands to Cossacks (though my teacher of history told it was more like sending them into exile). Not so long ago authorities wanted to rename Krasnodar as Yekaterinodar, but locals didn't want to. And now these "E"s are everywhere.
