“Lipstick”: The Latest 3d Printed RG65

Introducing “lipstick”, the development continues…..

Introducing the latest RG65 from the combined efforts of Bill Hagerup and Selwyn Holland.

rg65 model yachts

In fact this is an updated variation of the “Shrink” series that I have been sailing here in Australia. The “Glass Lady” was the last prototype in the series and can be viewed elsewhere in the site.

rg65 model yachts

So what is different?

Mainly on the construction side:

  • a slightly thicker hull for resilience (added 20g). The “Glass Lady” has had no problems on the water but I have had feedback from those constructing their own that during the building process they occasionally cracked something while cutting. Easy to fix at the time but an experiment with hull thicknesses totally solved the problem anyway. All part of the ongoing research and exposure of what we have learnt on the way. Hopefully others will be able to start in a more advanced position than what we did.
  • Some minor changes to how the internal running gear fits in. The original is proving very efficient and this just added a bit to it.
  • The main change was the position of the mast/keel case . This was moved back 10 mm  and seems to be a slight improvement on balance/performance particularly in the heavier chop. Time will tell. The “Glass Lady” is a fast and very competitive RG and “Lipstick” is feeling just as good and so far a bit better in short chop, stronger breezes, yet still very fast in the lighter conditions. Time will tell, I can hardly wait to get it to some regattas.
  • The addition of a slightly heavier 3d printed bulb and very stiff 3d printed keel to be used at those fast and furious events. As a side note, I started using a hydro-dynamically efficient 3d printed bulb a while back more as a dare to see if it could be done. It went so well that I have not bothered to take it off. I have seen no disadvantage at all compared to standard lead only bulbs and so much easier to make.
  • Nothing was done to the outside surface of this model. We have discovered that the fine matte finish is no hindrance to performance and is very resilient to bumps and scraps, definitely superior to paint. So we just leave it as it is. The colour is within the printed PLA, not on the surface.

The initial trials have gone very well and this will now be my personal racing craft.

Enjoy the images.

Selwyn Holland.

Any questions can be sent to [email protected]. Be patient, I get to them as a soon as I can. I will say I am staggered and heartened by the amount of interest and the quality of the questions coming through.

Latest update:

The more I sail it, the faster it seems to want to go. The sails are a standard jib and a rather radical double luff single sheet main. The combination of both of these seems to easily keep with and often beat both the best RG65 swing rigs and now the new A+ rig on the latest DF. The A+ has a larger surface area than the maximum Rg 65 rig.

Results from our latest Club Championship round included 2 6 1 1 2 5 1 from a strong fleet of 11 yachts. That was a comfortable overall win for the round. It is rarely out of the top three in club sailing and championships.

I can hardly wait to get it to a major RG65 competition. An earlier design won the Australia Day Regatta last year in Sydney.

Explore the MJX F46 RC Helicopter: Features and Benefits

On the 24th of June, 1978 Raul Landó, launched his Lady Susan , free sailing, Braine steered G65 at the Plaza Urquiza pond in Buenos Aires Argentina,, but this time with radio installed! This became the very first Radio G65, that is, an "RG65". And Raul has held Sail Number "1" since then. At this time, and still in force today , the fundamentals of class rules were defined:-

No multi-hull constructions permitted

Hull length 65cm 0.5cm +/-

Mast height max. 110 cm above the deck

Sail area max. 0.225 m²

Other restrictions do not exist. It is a development class.

Simple wooden chine boats are just as permissible as Carbon fiber lightweight hulls, with the displacement of most of the designs leveling off at around 1000g.

Invasion Europe

In Europe the class began to take hold around 1998. Naturally, the spread began in the Spain first, but there are now active RG65 fleets in England, Holland, Switzerland, France, Italy, Poland, Germany and Ireland.

 RG65 Comes to the USA

Fast forward 10 years to 2008, when Earl Boebert and Dick Lemke became interested in the Class and started talking about the boats. Earl’s club, Duke City MYC in Albuquerque, adopted the Class and built a fleet of nine boats in a few months.

The first US RG65 regatta was hosted by DCMYC in 2008, and they continue to host their annual event called "The Rio Grande Cup". Since 2008, the Class has spread across North America.

Today there are several hundred owners and probably 1,000+ boats scattered throughout the U.S.

What our customers say about Racing Sparrow

Being a complete novice, I purchased your book a couple of years ago and built two racing sparrows. Building on this experience I then went on to build, from scratch, an IOM (Triple Crown design). I've since joined a local club and sail virtually every weekend. I would just like to thank you for your endeavours which have allowed me to enter a world I never thought was in my reach.

John Sterland, Australia

Coming upon your book, "Build your own Radio Controlled Yacht" in the Napier Public Library, I am hugely impressed. The combination of your superb photos and illustrations with your easy writing style make it a standout publication and I hope it does well for you.

Richard Spence, New Zealand

Thanks for an excellent design in your RG65. I trialled her again today in a solid 20 knots gusting higher. Even so in a steep chop and fingers off the rudder she drove upwind remarkably well, balanced perfectly. Very impressed that a model boat can handle that with a large rig. I found the book excellent. Ive built several big boats, plus a few skiffs and without that resource building such a good boat would have been impossible.

More about Racing Sparrow

When I was nine years old my father, Ross Heveldt taught me to sail down at Bucklands Beach in Auckland. My wee optimist dinghy was called 'The Racing Sparrow', the nickname my uncle Bruce Curry gave to me when I was a small boy. Apparently I had an abundance of energy.

I studied at Whanganui School of Design and have been a designer / developer since 1998. I live in New Zealand.

Best wishes and happy sailing, Bryn Heveldt.

Dragon Force 65

 DESIGN RULES

A one design r/c model racing yacht, the 25.8″ Dragon Force 65 was a modified RG65 Class boat derived from Mark Dick’s narrow hull RG65 ICE design. The Dragon Force features an ABS molded hull, profiled aluminum fin, molded plastic rudder, shroudless rig, carbon mast and booms, ball raced kicker/gooseneck fitting, and watertight construction. Joysway (the manufacturer) provides the Dragon Force as a near complete model requiring only assembly of the standing rigging and deck sail control lines (an A Rig is supplied), installation of keel and rudder, and addition of batteries. Electronics are installed, and a boat stand and radio/transmitter are included.

The Dragon Force 65 is the work of designers Mike Weston, John Tushingham and Mark Dicks who began collaborating with Joysway in 2011 to develop a high performing but inexpensive r/c model racing yacht. Time constraints on the project required the design team to adopt an existing class/design that had already demonstrated serious performance, and to modify the design to make it affordable. The RG65 (a developmental class) “ICE” design was considered the best candidate. To insure close performance sailing and modest cost, restricted design rules would also be required. The result was the one design Dragon Force 65 introduced in 2013. The Dragon Force 65 is already sailed worldwide with large followings around the world.

The Dragon Force 65 Class Rules require the boat to be raced “as supplied by” the manufacturer with no modifications except those articulated in the rules as “permitted changes.” A+, A, B and C Rigs are permissible (dimensions are provided), as are after market sails. Some substitution of electronic equipment and rigging materials is  allowed as well. A number of the permitted changes improve the integrity (reliability) of the sailboat, and were added as the design team improved the manufactured product (Dragon Force 65 Version 6 is now on the market). Work on improving the Dragon Force is ongoing, and additional allowable modifications are published as “Hints & Tips”. Text of these is available at the UK Dragon Force 65 web site. An excellent illustrated version of the “ Hints & Tips ” is provided by Abersoch Boatyards in the UK.

MYA RG65 UK Nationals 2023 23rd & 24th September 2023 Report by Peter Baldwin

Fifteen RG65 sailors finally made it to the starting line for the first race of this years RG65 Nationals being held at West Kirby Marine lake after moving the event from the Birkenhead Lake. It had been hoped for a fleet of nearly 20 boats, but due to a variety of reasons some boats did not enter, others dropped out at the last minute due to health reasons and Peter Baldwin opted out to run the event as Race Officer.

rg65 model yachts

It was a tricky first day at West Kirby for both the sailors and Race Officer alike. After setting up a proposed course prior to the briefing with what appeared to be a steady wind direction, the wind had swung through nearly 90 degrees during the briefing and so had to be reset. This caused a 20 minute delay to the start of racing, which got underway using the outer walkway as the control area. As the day progressed, the 6 to 12 knot wind kept the Race Officer and his mark laying team busy with changes or potential changes after every few races. There were two further major changes in course area and the minor changes continued even up to the final Race (16) which was completed by 18:00hrs, resulting in a slow race pace. by this time the course was now using the Promenade as a control area. A mix of top suit swing rigs and low aspect full sized A rigs were used on day 1 as the breeze varied in strength. The day was rounded out with Graham Elliott sailing an Electronica leading the event, with Spaniard Victor Izquierdo sailing an Ivy in second and Tobias Laux also sailing an Ivy in third.

Day 2 dawned with 14 knots, gusting 20 from a SSE direction with a forecast set to move this to a Southerly and increase in strength at some point during the morning to be 20 knots with gusts of up to 30. As the wind varied in strength, there were a number of rig changes using B and C rigs, as everyone tried to make the best of the breeze. Sometimes, unfortunately, boats became over canvassed and racing was temporarily halted for a rig change at the end of a race.

rg65 model yachts

At least it was mild in the breeze and there was only a small amount of rain most of it falling during an early lunch break. Course changes today were also minimal as the breeze probably only changed in direction by 20 degrees and so all racing could be conducted from the good vantage point provided by the promenade. Graham Elliott (Electronica) continued where he left off after the first day and had a dominating day winning 9 of the 15 races sailed. There were 4 race wins for Victor Izquierdo (Ivy), plus one each for Rohan Williams (Uno) and Bill Culshaw (Ivy). Tobias Laux (Ivy) also had a very consistent day, but without a win to his name.

Unfortunately the combined effects of the strong winds, leaking boats with salt water led to a good number of retirements from racing during the day, so that having started the day with a potential 12 boats racing, by the end of racing there were only 6 boats in each of the last 4 races.

rg65 model yachts

The final result gave the Championship to Graham in first, well ahead of Victor in second who narrowly beat Tobias into third place. In his winners speech, Graham thanked the sailors for making the event enjoyable and thanked all of the volunteers from the club who gave up their time over the weekend, most especially to Peter Baldwin who also dropped out of sailing to run the event, all supported once again by wife Judith. Full results are below.

Bancroft DragonForce 65 V7 655mm (25.7") Racing Sailboat from Joysway - PNP - BNC1048-002

There are few R/C modeling activities more peaceful than sailing a yacht on a summer’s evening enjoying a gentle, constant breeze on your preferred pond. Likewise, few activities can be more exciting than racing like a captain in the America’s Cup, using a model yacht against similarly-equipped competitors that places your sailing skills to the test!

Bancroft is pleased to offer the world-renown DragonForce 65 sailing yacht, a model perfectly suited to either activity. Manufactured by Joysway Model Co., it’s now available for sale through Motion RC!

Available in both PNP (no transmitter or receiver) and RTR (includes transmitter and receiver) versions, these models arrive highly prefabricated and ready for final assembly and rigging.

V7 improvements include a new, improved sail winch servo and a revised boat stand that allows either vertical or horizontal securement of the model for convenient storage, transport, or maintenance.

With active chapters in eight countries, DF racing has become an economical and enjoyable portal into the sport of RC sailing. Visit www.dfracing.world for information, rules, competition chapters, and events.
