RYA Commercial Endorsements

rya advanced powerboat commercial endorsement

If you are looking to work on small commercial vessels then you must commercially endorse your RYA qualification. There are two qualifications that you can commercially endorse, RYA powerboat level 2 & RYA advanced powerboat (with exam).

- rya powerboat level 2.

When commercially endorsed the powerboat level 2 will allow you to work on small commercial vessels under 10 metres in length and no more than 3 miles from shore during daylight hours.

- RYA ADVANCED POWERBOAT CERTIFICATE OF COMPETENCE (EXAM)

When commercially endorsed the advanced powerboat will allow you to work on small commercial vessels under 24 metres in length and no more than 20 miles from shore both during day and night.

As well as your RYA Powerboat Level 2 or Advanced Powerboat Qualification, you will need to complete the following courses:

- professional practice and responsibilities (ppr).

A compulsory online course for RYA Commercial Endorsement holders. No matter what your role on the water, we all have a duty of care to crew, passengers, and other water users, and you will be held to account if things go wrong.

- RYA SHORT RANGE RADIO (SRC/VHF) COURSES

When using radios on the water the RYA SRC/VHF radio course will teach you everything you need to know about protocol and how to use the the radios. This specialist course is run over 1 day and includes an exam at the end which you can book directly with the RYA (just follow the instructions sent to you when booking the course). Using specifically adapted radios in the classroom environment gives the perfect start to understanding how the radios work and can be used.

- RYA/MCA SEA SURVIVAL COURSES

This 1-day Sea Survival Course will prepare students for all eventualities at sea and is vital for yachtsman, crews, skippers and power boaters of all types. This training course concentrates on sea survival for professional crews, commercial operators and offshore race crews. The RYA Sea Survival Course covers essential survival techniques including what to do if the worst happens and you have to abandon your boat or ship. RYA/MCA Sea Survival is also day 1 of the 2 day ISAF Offshore Safety Crew Course, which is required for crews racing offshore in ISAF races.

- RYA/MCA FIRST AID COURSES

The courses cover areas including drowning, cold water shock, sea sickness, dehydration and hypothermia. They are only one-day courses but could save yours or a crew members life. These courses are aimed at anyone who gets afloat, whether on inland waters, rivers, estuaries or on cross channel passages. Immediate action in an emergency at sea can save lives.

THE POWERBOATING, VHF, SEA SURVIVAL AND FIRST AID COURSES CAN BE BOOKED ON THE CALENDAR BELOW

Commercial Endorsements

If you want to work in a commercial environment and take up to 12 paying passengers to sea in a vessel of up to 24m then it is a legal requirement to hold an RYA/MCA certificate of competence with a commercial endorsement. That shows that you have undergone additional training, a practical examination and a medical fitness test to operate a commercial vessel. The level of endorsement you hold determines the categories of water you can operate in.

The RYA Level 2 Powerboat can be commercially endorsed to operate in Category 6 waters. This category is defined as within 3 miles of a nominated departure point, and never more than 3 miles from land, in favourable weather and daylight.

The RYA Advanced Powerboat (with exam) can be commercially endorsed to operate in Category 3 waters, once the holder has more than 2 years relevant experience. This category is defined as up to 20 miles from a safe haven.

For categories above this, the Yachtmaster Offshore can be endorsed to operate up to 150 miles from a safe haven and the Yachtmaster Ocean can be endorsed to operate worlwide.

Commercial vessels are also required to be surveyed and certified before being used commercially, and their size and level of equipment determines the category of water they can operate in, as well as the level of qualification and commercial endorsement held by the skipper.

How to commercially endorse your qualification

In addition to your powerboat qualification, you will need to complete the following courses:

  • VHF/SRC Marine Radio license
  • Professional Practice and Responsibilities (PPR)
  • Sea Survival course

Once the qualification has been attained, and the additional training completed, an application can be made to the RYA to issue the commercial endorsement. Send the following items to RYA Certification, RYA House, Ensign Way, Hamble, Hampshire SO31 4YA:

  • Your original certificate - Powerboat Level 2 or Advanced exam
  • Your Professional Practices and Responsibilities certificate
  • A commercial endorsement application form
  • Your original, completed  ML5 medical fitness form Note: We can only accept the latest version of the ML5 form (currently MSF 4112 / Rev 0916). Skippers working in category 1 or 0 waters will need the ENG1 medical. A list of approved doctors can be found on the MCA website.See note below on medical referrals.
  • A copy of your RYA Basic Sea Survival certificate or STCW Personal Survival Techniques
  • A copy of your First Aid Certificate (only required if applying for a commercial endorsement to a Day Skipper, Powerboat Level 2 Powerboat Handling or Advanced Powerboat Course Completion Certificate).
  • A copy of your RYA Marine Radio SRC Certificate or other acceptable GMDSS Marine Radio Operator's Certificate.
  • A passport sized photo with your name on the back
  • The application fee

Medical Referrals

If you are submitting an ML5 Medical Report Form and Certificate and the Doctor has entered any ticks within the sections 1-9 or comments in section 9, your medical will need to be referred to the MCA, and they will not accept any medicals which are more than one year old. Neptune Maritime Training Sail & Power

What is a commercial endorsement?

It is an endorsement printed on your RYA certificate of competence to show that you have undergone additional training and a medical fitness test, enabling you to work on commercial vessels. There are two types of commercial endorsement:

The standard commercial endorsement allows you work on board British flagged vessels subject to the MCA’s codes of practice for small commercial vessels. The following wording would appear on your certificate:

  • For Yachtmaster Offshore and Yachtmaster Ocean Certificates of Competence: This certificate is valid for use as a Master of yachts of up to 200gt on commercially and privately registered yachts until (date of expiry).
  • For Powerboat Level 2, Powerboat Advanced, Day Skipper and Yachtmaster Coastal Certificates of Competence: Valid for vessels of up to 24 metres in length used for commercial purposes subject to the codes of practice issued by the MCA until (date of expiry).

The STCW endorsement is for holders of the RYA Yachtmaster Offshore and Ocean Certificates of Competence working under non-UK maritime authorities. It requires you to take 4 additional courses:

  • Personal Survival techniques (STCW A-V1/1-1)
  • Personal Safety and Social Responsibilities (STCW A-V1/1-4)
  • Elementary first aid (STCW A-V1/1-3)
  • Fire fighting and fire prevention (STCW A-V1/1-2)

The following wording would appear on your certificate: The certificate holder has completed training under the STCW code A- VI/1 Para 2.1. This certificate is valid for use as Master of yachts of up to 200gt on commercially and privately registered yachts until:(date of expiry).

Which certificates can be commercially endorsed?

The following certificates can receive the standard commercial endorsement:

I) Course completion certificate:

  • RYA National Powerboat Certificate – Level 2
  • RYA National Powerboat Certificate – Advanced (only if issued before January 1, 2005)
  • RYA Day Skipper (tidal) practical course completion certificate.
  • RYA Day Skipper (non-tidal) practical course completion certificate, only if supported by a Day Skipper shorebased course completion certificate.

II) Certificate of competence (exam passed):

  • RYA Advanced Powerboat Certificate of Competence
  • RYA Yachtmaster Coastal Certificate of Competence
  • RYA Yachtmaster Offshore Certificate of Competence
  • RYA Yachtmaster Ocean Certificate of Competence

In addition, the RYA Yachtmaster Offshore and Yachtmaster Ocean Certificates of Competence can receive the STCW endorsement.

Which certificate do I need?

The MCA’s codes of practice categorise British flagged commercial yachts according to the type of yacht and the waters in which they operate. It is this categorisation that determines which of the above certificates you will need. See the MCA’s table of manning requirements below.

The RYA is a certifying authority for the codes of practice and can give advice on the coding and categorisation of commercial yachts. See the requirements for commercial boats link below.

How do I apply for a standard commercial endorsement?

Send the following items to RYA Certification, RYA House, Ensign Way, Hamble, Hampshire SO31 4YA:

  • Your original certificate – see list above
  • Your Professional Practices and Responsibilites certificate – more information
  • A commercial endorsement application form – see link on the right
  • An ML5 or ENG1 medical fitness certificate – download the MCA’s ML5 form from the link on the right. Skippers working in category 1 or 0 waters will need the ENG1 medical. Contact the MCA for a list of approved doctors.
  • A copy of your RYA Basic Sea Survival certificate or STCW Personal Survival Techniques
  • A passport sized photo with your name on the back

*From April 2012 applicants for the commercial endorsement will also have to complete an online course and assessment, as detailed in the ‘What is a commercial endorsement?’ section above.

How do I apply for a STCW endorsement?

  • Your original RYA Yachtmaster Offshore or Yachtmaster Ocean certificate of competence
  • A commercial endorsement application form – see link below
  • Evidence of completion of STCW courses – see list above

Revalidating your commercial endorsement

All commercial endorsements must be revalidated every five years by proving at least 150 days of actual sea service on appropriate vessels during the previous five years, and be in possession of a valid medical fitness certificate.

If you are unable to prove the requisite sea service but are able to demonstrate that during at least half of the five year period you have been employed on duties closely associated with the management and operation of one or more of the appropriate types of vessels, you may have your certificate considered for revalidation.

*April 2012 onwards applicants for the commercial endorsement also have to complete an online PPR course and assessment, as detailed here .

Once you have taken your first PPR course, at subsequent renewals of your commercial endorsement you will need to take a reduced version of the course and a short test to make sure you are still up to speed with the subject.

Note: If you are over 65 and subject to more regular medical fitness examinations, you do not need to take the PPR course each time you renew your medical. You will simply need to take it when your commerical endorsment is due for renewal (normally every five years).

“ In 1953 no one talked about mission statements, but if we had had one it would have gone something like this:

“Our goal is to provide plans, kits, and building materials to home boatbuilders.

  • All of our plans will include full size patterns, to eliminate the process of lofting which is required with boat plans that are now (1953) available. We feel that lofting excludes many potential builders from ever beginning their project and our patterns will eliminate the tedious lofting process.
  • We will sell Fastening Kits and Fiberglass Kits for our designs.
  • We will also sell Frame Kits to those builders who are in a hurry to complete their boat building project.
  • If customers have questions, we do everything we can to see that those questions are answered; the success of our builders is our best advertisement.”

A lot has happened since 1953. In the beginning we had runabouts, ski boats, and cruisers. Now we supply plans for virtually every type of boat. We have published six books written by our staff. We have published seven videos. We now have this web page. In all cases these projects have been do-it-yourself projects. We type the copy, shoot the pictures and videos, paste-up the books and literature, and after a little help in the beginning, we have written our own html copy for our web site. Along the way we have built the test models for many of our designs. We have done testing of building methods, and have recently researched the ins and outs of electric boating so that we could produce plans that you can build, from the boat, to electrical wiring, to rudder and motor installation. Sometimes we ask ourselves whether we will ever sell enough plans to pay for the time and expense… some don’t. But this is the only way we know how to do it. It is important to us that you succeed.

From the beginning Glen-L has served as a training ground for Naval Architects, some of whom have gone on to start businesses of their own. Through cover articles in Popular Mechanics and other magazines we have introduced generations to the art of boat building. It is common for us to be told that “I built one of your boats when I was a kid”. Or even, “I helped my father build one, I later built one by myself, and now I’m going to help my son build one”.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

We were pioneers in plywood boat construction, which led to the publication of our book BOATBUILDING WITH PLYWOOD. This book is the only text available that is devoted exclusively to plywood boat construction. It has served as a text book in college boatbuilding classes throughout the US and Canada. Our video on fiberglassing is required viewing for all students taking the plastics program in a university in Florida. Our books FIBERGLASS BOATBUILDING FOR AMATEURS and HOW TO FIBERGLASS BOATS are sold by suppliers of fiberglass materials as instruction books.

Even though we are one of the largest suppliers of boat plans and building supplies for the home builder, we have remained a small company. We wear many hats, helping in the construction of test models, writing or proof reading copy, or answering customer questions.

We hope you will turn to us when you get ready for your first or next boat building project. We like to help, and it keeps us in business.”

General Comments About the Website

FROM Donald:  " This is an awesome website. I found the information that I needed right away from one of the over 20,000 free articles that you provide as a public service. I'm surprised that so much if this site is free. But I still signed up so I could access the thousands of expanded pages, interesting articles, and dozens of valuable programs! The member's library of books, magazines and videos that I can view online is really terrific! I understand that you and your staff are all unpaid volunteers. Please keep up the good work. And I commend you for your plans to add another 10,000 free informative articles over the next year. I'm thrilled to support you in this endeavor with my small membership donation. Thanks again for all your hard work. "

FROM Huey:  " I agree with my Uncle, I too have found the articles to be very enlightening. They say that it will take about 100,000 articles to cover the full scope that they have envisioned for the website. They have over 20,000 articles so far and that's doing pretty well, but it could take several years to get the rest. I also noticed that many of the Main Topic Pages and some of the article pages are still in the rough draft stage. I guess that they will fill in as they can get volunteers to work on them. But what I can't figure out is why anyone would spend the time writing informative in depth articles just to give away free to this website for publication? What's in it for them? "

FROM Dewey:  " Well Huey, to me It looks like most of the articles on this website are written by very informed people, like boating instructors, boat designers, boat builders, riggers, electricians, fitters, marine repair technicians and marine surveyors. Writing such articles helps establish them as knowledgeable professionals. After all, this website was originally created by a school for marine technicians and marine surveyors. The website is growing in content every day. They even had to move to a bigger, more powerful server because the website's traffic has been growing exponentially. "

FROM Louie:  " I agree with everyone above. This site is quickly becoming the ultimate reference resource about every aspect of boats and ships for everyone from the beginning recreational boater to the seasoned professional mariner. I use the topic pages on the right sidebar to browse around the website. It's like a Junior Woodchucks' Guidebook for Boaters. Their Members' Library of over 300 popular and obscure books and over 200 magazine back issues that can be viewed online is fabulous. The Academy's magazine is especially informative. On top of that, there is the "Ask-An-Expert program for members where you can get an expert's answer to any of your boat questions. And a whole years membership is only $25. What a deal! I really love being part of this "Everything About Boats" community and help provide thousands of helpful articles free to the public. I think that I'll sit down right now and write an article about my experiences boating with my uncle. "

FROM Scrooge: " You rave about this website like it was the best thing since sliced bread. Well, I think it stinks. Sure, it has a lot of good information for boaters, and they're adding more every day, but it will probably never be finished. Furthermore, I don't even own a boat. And I wouldn't have a boat even if someone gave me one. Boats are a waste of money and time and energy and money! They're just a hole in the water you pour money into. If you gave me a boat, I'd sell it quicker then you could say Baggywrinkle. Then I'd lock up the cash with all my other money so I could keep my eye on it and count it every day. Bah humbug. "

FROM Daisy:  " I'm just so glad that Donald got the boat so we and the boys could enjoy boating — together. And of course all of the girls, April, May, and June, love to be on the water too, especially when that is where the boys are. Oh poor Scrooge, boating is more fun then you could possibly imagine. "

FROM Scrooge: " After seeing how much fun you all have on the water together, I regret that I didn't have that much fun when I was young. I've had a change of heart, and I'm giving each of you a Lifetime Academy Membership . "

FROM Editor:  " For those of you that have stayed with us this far, many thanks, and we hope that you found this little narrative informative. Your faithful support inspires us to keep working on this phenomenal website. We know that we have a lot more to do. Ultimately, we hope that we can help you enjoy the wonder filled world of boating as much as we do. We are all waiting to see what you have to say about this webpage article. Submit any comments via email To: Comments♣EverythingAboutBoats.org (Replace "♣" with "@"). Be sure to include this page's title in the subject line. Also, your corrections, updates, additions and suggestions are welcomed. Please submit them via email To: Editor♣EverythingAboutBoats.org (Replace "♣" with "@"). It has been truly amazing to see what we have been able to accomplished when we've worked together. Thanks to all those that have donated their valuable time and energy, and a special THANK YOU to all that have supported this cause with their membership donations. "

To ensure Conservation Voters for Idaho endorses the best possible conservation candidates, our volunteer Board of Directors with staff support conduct a multi-step review process and criteria for selection.

Candidates are evaluated along the following criteria: knowledge of conservation issues, potential effectiveness to advance conservation issues if/when elected to office and propensity to be a true champion on our issues. “Best” conservation candidates are not just those candidates who represent themselves as the most pro-environment, but who will best advance the effort to protect Idaho’s environment. As a bipartisan organization, we select candidates regardless of political party.

Our endorsement begins at the staff level where campaign staff distribute questionnaires to candidates across the state. All candidates are invited to participate in the process and fill out the questionnaire. Questionnaire responses are evaluated by our Endorsement Task Force, which is composed of select members of the Conservation Voters for Idaho Board of Directors and supported by staff. If the task force needs further clarification from the questionnaire responses, follow up activities occur which could include in-person interviews or reference checks.

Based on the questionnaire responses, the personal interview, candidate’s platforms on conservation issues and other criteria guidelines listed above, the Endorsement Task Force votes on their endorsement recommendations. Those approved recommendations are then taken to Conservation Voters for Idaho’s Board of Directors for a final vote.
