1980 Com-Pac 23 sailboat with trailer

1980 Com-Pac 23 sailboat with trailer

Hillsboro, Oregon

Make Com-Pac

Category Cruiser Motorcycles

Length 23.0

Compac 23 sailboat w/ 2 axle trailer, motor and custom interior. The Com-Pac 23 is a highly respected trailer-able, ramp- launch-able pocket cruiser. Sleeps 4 adults, has accomodations for extended cruising vacations, and the flexibility of being trailered home afterwards. Small galley with pump water, small head with porta-potti. Features a NACA foil shaped shoal draft keel and outboard rudder, she handles rough seas with grace and style. 6 opening bronze ports and hand built yacht-like interior make this boat a proper mini- yacht. I've owned this one for 8 years, and it features a new interior: teak, mahogany and maple over 3/4" closed cell foam insulation. New wiring, breaker panel, Hummingbird GPS/ chart plotter/ sonar, Cd/ radio, VHF, LED/ fluorescent lighting. Electric start Nissan 9.9 hp OB, recently serviced impeller, tune-up. Tabernacle mast w/ Stainless Steel strut system, allows easy mast stepping even in windy conditions. There is still some detail work going on (interior trim mostly), but it's ready to sail and trailer most anywhere. CDI flexible furler with recent 120% jib sail. Main sail in useable shape; not overly stretched, torn or dirty. Heavy duty twin axle trailer w/ surge brakes, good tires and new bunks. New equalizer hitch. Recent paint, wiring, brake hydraulics. Trailered across the country with no issues. This is a good pocket cruiser type sailboat, with good stability, speed and reasonable comfort. Limited headroom (under 5'), but lengthy, comfortable berths (7'). I've sailed it under stressful conditions (20+ knots, rough seas), and made it home smiling. I can't think of a more enjoyable trailerable (and I've owned 6); stability, comfort, speed and portability are all well balanced and deliberate. Possible trade considered. Please call with questions. Patrick: 503-702-7104

1997 MacGregor 26X This MacGregor 26X is a great trailerable sail boat that is also powered by a 15 HP Honda 4-stroke engine that operates well without any problems. Engine controls are on the center console to the left of the helm. It is a terrific boat for learning to sail. It is very forgiving and yet it can also be very competitive in club racing. It has a retractable keel with a draft of about 10 inches, allowing you to beach the boat all the way to the shoreline. This boat really has a lot of room for its size! It is good for motoring and sailing allowing you to go anywhere even when there is no wind. With a larger motor, it can easily pull a water-skier or a person in a tube. It's a very enjoyable boat that's easy to sail and very stable. EQUIPMENT The MacGregor is equipped with mainsail, jib and spinnaker along with sail bags. It has all of the standard equipment including stainless steel wheel, engine controls on the pedestal, hinged helm seat which allows easy access to motor and swim ladder on the transom, Emergency exit hatch on the foredeck, anchor locker, one over-sized gas tank, mooring cleats, custom mast raising winch, anodized mast and boom, deck tracks for jib and genoa, self furling jib, water ballast system, positive foam flotation, self-bailing cockpit, non-skid deck surfaces, stainless bow pulpit, stainless safety rails and lifelines, twin kick-up rudders, and swing centerboard. Also included is a Danforth anchor with 3/8" chain and poly rope. INTERIOR The boat has a galley with a sink and faucet as well as storage under the seats and in the drawers. A fully functional Bimini over the after deck keeps you cool as you speed across the waves at 4 knots. TRAILER The dual axle trailer with surge brakes is upgraded from the normal singe axle trailer and can safely run at highway speeds in any State with absolutely no wandering. Tires are in almost new condition with an accompanying spare. "Boat also comes with a spare mast raising system as well as a spare mast ($1400 value). This spare mast is brand new and has never been installed. Old mast works very well but the previous owner felt that he had to have a new mast in reserve, just in case (??)" Contact Information: Brian (907)-252-1280. Please call me if you have any questions or you'd like to view the boat. This boat is located in Las Vegas, Nevada. PRICING NADA pricing for this boat quotes a price of $12,535 for low retail and $14,240 for average retail. This does not take into account the additional new mast which has a value of $1400 and the upgraded trailer would cost $3500 to replace. This gives this package a conservative value of $15,500 to $16,000 and we are offering this boat, motor and upgraded dual axle trailer at: $12,950 (including the spare mast.) THE FOLLOWING INFORMATION IS FROM THE MANUFACTURER "Every year, for the past 35 years, the various models of the MacGregor 25 and MacGregor 26 have been the best selling cruising type sailboats, not only in the United States, but in the entire world. We can think of no other manufacturer, of any type of product, that has so totally dominated its market for so long a period of time. You don't need an expensive mooring. It can be stored on its trailer, launched at any ramp and rigged in just minutes. Launch the boat, anchor in a quiet cove, and you can be as far away from the world as you want to be, You can have your own island, for free, at some of the most beautiful vacation areas on earth. 2001 J46 sailboat sail boat J-46 sailing cruiser racing fresh water. UPGRADES!

Charlevoix, Michigan

Make J Boats

Length 46.0

Beautiful, generously equipped and meticulously cared for freshwater J46 owned by senior couple. Used only for day sailing and minimal light cruising in northern Lake Michigan, Lake Huron and Lake Charlevoix for only 12 four month seasons (was not launched in 2012 and 2013). Always kept in inside heated storage when not in the water for the four month summer season. It is in pristine condition. J/46 may be the only investment grade sailing yacht of its size not requiring professional crew to sail at designed performance levels…..or to maintain. Two people can easily manage her upwind and down to achieve the same 8 knot passage-making speeds under sail that is possible when motoring with 76hp diesel auxiliary. The joy of sailing the perfect boat is, after all, a goal we believe every owner ultimately seeks. To insure that good sailing days are spent sailing rather than scrubbing and varnishing, J/46 is designed to be virtually maintenance-free. Her exquisite joinerwork is protected from the sun……below decks where it’s beauty can be preserved More photos available in this link: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1QEllizB6x4FKTe3kGwlbjYaLgJMrQEg8x6PdVtIa14Y/pub Factory Options: Refrigeration Package: -Seafrost Mechanical Refrigeration.-Additional Plates & controls for Freezer.-Supplementary 110VAC Shore power Assist. Helped by new materials and techniques, they evolve from the joint experiences of designer, builder and owners to become state-of-the-art. J/46 is such a vessel, inheriting the proven hull shape of the J/44, an offshore blue water classic, having won the Fastnet, Sydney-Hobart, NYYC Queen’s Cup and Trans-Atlantic races. J/44 is the only Class of yacht ever to be given its own class start by the Cruising Club of America in the Newport-Bermuda Race. To create the J/46, a foot of sailing length is added for speed; a transom swim/boarding platform for convenience; a carbon fiber mast and low VCG 6.2’ shoal draft keel for more stability; and a resin-infused, composite hull and deck for greater strength. Below decks, the choice was clear, use the same beautifully varnished cherry or teak joiner work, entertainment center and styling so highly acclaimed in our deluxe J/160. J/46 is a maxi-Ditch yacht, the tallest yacht that can fit under the bridges of the Intra-Coastal WWaterway. Yet she is non-intimidating. A high length-to-beam ratio on the waterline of this sea-kindly yacht significantly improves tracking offshore in large waves and makes sail plan balance less critical. J/46 sails with either main or jib only, always responding predictably to a light touch on the helm. Sail power with good stability allows cruising with working jib rather than large genoa. That’s less work for the crew and improved visibility for the person on the helm. J Boats’ unique spinnaker system makes downwind sailing possible for two. A modern asymmetric spinnaker attaches to the top of the anchor roller, is contained within a cockpit-controlled snuffer, and is stored, ready-to-use, in the bow locker. The spinnaker is hoisted to the masthead, 2’ above the headstay intersect, leaving space for the snuffer to shift on a jibe. Jibing is then easy. One simply lets off one spinnaker sheet and pulls in the other.

2013 Jeanneau Sun Odyssey 379 2013 JEANNEAU SUN ODYSSEY 379 Antinea BUILDERS REMARKS: The Sun Odyssey 379 represents the perfect balance of ingredients that have made the Sun Odyssey range a success. The performance-oriented hull comes from the drawing boards of Marc Lombard. Special attention was given to ease of sail handling, ergonomics and modern aesthetics. A hull with a hard chine, a keel designed with the help of powerful software and a deep, powerful rudder combine to ensure the speed and stability of the Sun Odyssey 379. On deck, elongated contemporary lines, flush deck hatches and carefully studied ergonomic design details all contribute to the overall comfort, safety and feeling of well-being onboard. The Sun Odyssey 379 has been nominated for European Yacht of the Year 2011/2012 in the Family Cruiser category. You may recall that the Sun Odyssey 409 was awarded the title in the same category in 2011.In addition to the aesthetic qualities and exceptional comfort onboard, the cockpit of the Sun Odyssey boasts larger dimensions than those found aboard other boats of this size. With twin helms and sheets led aft within easy reach of the helm, luxurious cockpit tableand fold-down transom platform, the Sun Odyssey 379 offers all the attributes of a much larger sailboat. BROKERS REMARKS: ANTINEA is fine example of the sorted Jeanneau 379.  We had three for sale and ALL three sold very quickly.  Like the previous models, we expect this yacht to sell fairly quickly.  This yacht shares more DNA with a private yacht than a charter yacht, with large cabins, large head and huge cockpit storage accessible from inside the yacht.  Very easy to sail single handed, and a safe yacht for offshore family cruising. AVAILABILITY: Leaves fleet July 2017, possibility of early release.

Sadler 290: A powerful & roomy twin-keeler

David Harding

  • David Harding
  • December 13, 2021

When she was launched in 2003, the Sadler 290 was probably the roomiest and most powerful 29ft twin-keeler ever built – and David Harding reckons she still is

Sadler 290

Product Overview

Manufacturer:.

Few production cruising yachts deserved more attention when they were launched than the Sadler 290.

This was a boat the likes of which had never been seen before.

She was destined to be something special from the outset, and she lived up to expectations in every way.

In fact, she exceeded them, and not only because the original brief had been for a boat that would be the modern equivalent of the Westerly Centaur .

As boats sometimes do in their formative stages, the Sadler became bigger and more powerful as the design evolved.

And as a former Sadler employee turned yachting journalist who happened to know everyone involved in the project, I was in the privileged position of seeing that evolution take place.

Having been involved in the development of the Starlights 14 years earlier, I had some idea of the potential in the design and I was more than eager to see how the new Sadler turned out.

Although the 290 was a Sadler by name, the new Sadler company was unrelated to those that had gone before. The design encapsulated many of the same beliefs and ideals nonetheless.

It would be a sailing boat first and foremost: tough, fast, capable, comfortable and designed to cover the ground quickly and confidently in all weathers.

The mainsheet is taken to a bridle forward of the hatch. On Java Blue the original wire bridle has been replaced by a longer one in Dyneema

At the same time it would offer more interior space than almost anything else of similar size that could lay claim to being a sailing boat.

Maintaining the Sadler continuity was the fact that Stephen Jones was chosen as the designer.

Jones had been responsible for the Starlights, which were widely recognised as setting new standards in performance cruisers, and the Sadler 290 would be a development of a similar concept.

A Sadler 290 man

One owner who found the Sadler 290 to be exactly what he wanted is Peter Kinver, who bought Java Blue second-hand in 2015.

Peter had previously owned a Sadler 29 , which I sailed with him a few years ago from his home port of Looe. He’s also a leading light in the Redwing fleet in Looe (that’s the Uffa Fox-designed National Redwing dinghy).

Peter’s first cruiser, coincidentally, had been a Sadler 26 that washed ashore near Looe, having been adrift for two days.

The long tiller makes an extremely comfortable helming position on the Sadler 290

He restored it and sailed it for about a year before buying a twin-keeled Sadler 29 that he kept on a drying mooring in the river.

By then he had already seen the Sadler 290 as a new boat at the Southampton Boat Show. When the time came to move up from the 29, it was an easy decision to make.

As he explains: ‘I wanted something bigger and faster without going over 29ft because of the cost of marina berths. I thought about a Sadler 34 but it would have cost £1,000 a year more in berthing fees.’

The benefits of twin keels

He was mindful of marina costs because the plan was to keep his next boat in a marina in Plymouth for a few years.

Lovely though Looe is as a place to sail from – and it’s sadly overlooked by most cruising sailors heading along the coast – a half-tide mooring does have its limitations.

Being able to step aboard and sail away at any state of tide would allow Peter to make much more use of the new boat.

To that extent he had no particular need for twin keels and would have favoured a fin-keeler had one been available.

Nearly all 290s are twin-keelers however, and as things have turned out, he has been more than happy to have two keels.

As he observes: ‘It’s good being able to dry out in the Isles of Scilly ’. Islands were involved in Java Blue ’s earlier life, too.

Peter initially saw her for sale in Guernsey – which has since been a racing destination with the boat – only to find when he enquired that she was already under offer.

Then, 12 months later, she appeared for sale with a broker in Plymouth and he bought her.

‘The boat came to me!’ he says.

Many factors contribute to make the Sadler 290 a very different sort of twin-keeler to most. For a start, the keels are in lead rather than cast iron.

Because lead is so much denser, they can be a slimmer and more efficient section.

The centre of gravity is much lower because they’re bolted on to moulded spacers, so all the weight is in the bottom half of the keel s.

The resulting power and righting moment is enormous compared with most twin-keelers – and fin-keelers too, for that matter – allowing the Sadler to carry a healthy spread of sail and to have a hull shape that, in typical Jones style, needs to provide little in the way of form stability .

Stanchions mounted on top of the moulded toenail raise the level of the guardwires on the Sadler 290

No hard turn to the bilge is necessary.

The waterline beam is narrow in relation to the overall beam by cruising-yacht standards, leading to a deeper canoe body.

Since stability comes from the weight in the keels, not from the hull shape , the hull is free to do what it should do: to slip through the water easily and retain its balance when the boat heels, because the immersed section remains undistorted.

Thinking heavy

The Sadler 290 is no lightweight, but wetted area is kept to a minimum by another feature that’s widely used by the designer in his cruising yachts: the displacement skeg.

Despite the 290’s wide stern at deck level, there’s less boat to stick to the water back here than you would think.

These factors combine to create a boat that simply sails the socks off most cruisers of similar size.

More ballast, more sail and a narrower waterline make a boat faster in both light and heavy airs, and more comfortable into the bargain.

One factor that Peter notices compared with his Sadler 29 is the absence of thudding and banging from the windward keel.

That’s because the keels are mounted further down the hull, closer to the centre-line, than on a typical twin-keeler.

They tend not to break the surface when the boat’s hard pressed, saving banging as well as extra drag.

Other clues to the Sadler’s performance potential include the notably fine entry.

Few cruisers are more delta-shaped than this one.

Going back a generation or two in designs, fuller forward sections would be needed to prevent nose-diving downwind in heavy weather .

Here, the buoyancy is provided by the ample freeboard instead.

The gunwale is by no means high by modern standards, but it combines with the relatively deep hull to provide well over 6ft (1.83m) of headroom in the saloon – more than respectable for a sporty cruiser of this size.

It also contributes to the exceptionally high AVS (angle of vanishing stability) of more than 140°, placing the Sadler 290 among the very small number of boats under 9m (30ft) to achieve Category A status under the RCD.

The interior volume is vastly greater than on the Sadler 29, whose hull is also shorter because the stated length includes the transom-hung rudder.

To say that the 290 is very different would be an understatement.

As Peter points out, she’s a bigger boat and ‘more of a handful – not as docile. You get much more room and performance but she’s not as directionally stable.’

As I found out on my first test in 2003, this isn’t a boat you can leave to her own devices.

There’s no skeg in front of the rudder as on the earlier Sadlers and the Starlights (the displacement skeg being something different), and the Sadler 290 will quickly wander off if you let go of the tiller.

That’s why Peter, who often sails single-handed , bought a Neptune windvane steering gear.

While he has no plans to cross oceans , he dislikes the noise of an electronic autopilot although he does have one for use under power.

It took a little fiddling to get the Neptune to fit on the transom and involved removing the stern door, which he doesn’t miss.

During my sail when the Sadler 290 had just been launched, I was more than impressed by her performance.

We clocked 5.5-5.8 knots on the breeze in 10 knots of true wind .

Second time out, in fresher conditions, we rarely dropped below 8 knots with the wind abaft the beam and consistently exceeded 6 knots to windward.

It was a brand new, unladen boat with a clean bottom, sails straight out of the loft and a crew that included the designer, builder and sailmaker, but it still wasn’t bad going for a twin-keeled cruiser.

A white hulled Sadler 290 sailing

A fine bow by cruising-boat standards inevitably means a narrow foredeck. Credit: David Harding

She felt different from the other Sadlers and from the Starlights, perhaps a little more twitchy and with a helm that was extremely light most of the time before loading up as the rudder gripped tenaciously in the stronger gusts.

This time we had a slightly weedy bottom because an injury meant that Peter had been using the boat less than usual and was unable to keep it as clean as he would like.

Java Blue was also fully laden with cruising kit, so we didn’t quite match the earlier performance but I was reminded that the Sadler 290 is quick and extremely enjoyable to sail, and gives you one of the most comfortable helming positions from the windward coaming that you will find on any boat.

Verdict on the Sadler 290

The Sadler 290’s combination of space and pace in a boat of this length is extremely hard to match. There are compromises, of course.

A fine bow makes the foredeck pretty narrow. On the other hand, the broad stern combined with the sensible width of the cockpit allows the wide side decks to run all the way to the transom.

On so many boats, the cockpit is made as wide as possible, so it feels insecure in a seaway and you have to step into it to get to the stern.

At the helm, you’re well forward in the cockpit because of the long tiller. That places you close to the sprayhood for shelter and to the coachroof winches .

At the same time it means that space further aft is limited by the swing of the tiller. That’s where the seats on each side on the stern rail come into their own.

As a concession to cruising convenience, the mainsheet is taken to a bridle on the coachroof forward of the companionway.

Thanks to the modest width of the side decks and cockpit, the wide side decks run all the way aft on the Sadler 290

Many of us would prefer a traveller in the cockpit, but at least the sheet can be reached from the helm.

Peter has also replaced the original wire strops with longer strops in Dyneema to reduce the downward pull and give a better sheeting angle.

In the cockpit, a large locker to port swallows most of the usual gear , and the seats are close enough together for leg-bracing in a seaway.

Below decks the layout is unusual for a relatively modern boat in placing the heads between the saloon and forecabin, as was the norm until a few decades ago.

While not everyone will approve of this arrangement, it moves the saloon further aft into a beamier part of the boat.

It also allows the galley to be tucked away to port by the companionway steps, where it’s extremely secure and right out of the way.

A tall coachroof gives the Sadler 290 more than 6ft of headroom below. Credit: David Harding

A proper pillar handhold is at its forward end – a rare and useful feature. Abaft the chart table to starboard, the aft cabin is generous for a boat of this size.

By contrast, and as you would expect, the forecabin gets narrow towards the bow. The quality of joinery on 290s depends partly on who built them.

Sadler Yachts contracted the first boats to Rampart Yachts. Others, including Peter’s, were fitted out by Lauren Marine and later boats by Hillyard in Littlehampton.

With all the changes that affected her during her all-too-short production run, the Sadler 290 had a history that could only be described as chequered.

There’s no doubt that her potential was never realised, and the demand must surely remain for boats like this today.

The good thing is that there are owners like Peter who appreciate these remarkable boats for what they are.

Hunter Boats and David Thomas arguably did more than any other builder and designer to show that boats with twin keels could really sail.

Some of the early twin-keelers went sideways almost as fast as they went forwards, but builders such as Hunter and Sadler did much to change that as well as offering twin keels on bigger boats.

Plenty of Hunter’s Channel 32s and 323s had twin keels. They were also offered on the Channel 31, which came later and was Hunter’s second boat over 30ft (9m).

The Hunter factory had previously been too small for boats of this size, the stretched versions of the Impala 28 (the Horizon 30 and Crusader 30) being the biggest in the range, but a bigger factory allowed expansion.

Originally due to appear at the London Boat Show in 1999, the Channel 31 was delayed by a year to allow time for refinements.

In the words of David Thomas, the 31 was ‘right down the middle between a club racer/one design and a cruiser you can sail anywhere’.

She was conceived to be pretty quick, and carried a big mainsail , but cruising concessions included the standard self-tacking jib.

Owners could choose an overlapping headsail if they wanted. A souped-up version, to be known as the 303, was planned but never built.

Under sail, the 31 is fast and rewarding; well balanced, stiff and responsive.

If she has a weakness it’s that the rudder struggles for grip when she’s seriously hard pressed, particularly downwind, when the well-swept spreaders make it hard to de-power that large mainsail.

Below decks she’s plusher than many of the earlier Hunters thanks to the styling by Ken Freivokh.

As David Thomas put it, ‘we gave this boat the things the Sigma 33 doesn’t have – more ballast, a proper keel and a new-fangled interior.’

Brand loyalty tends to be strong among boat owners, so it’s no surprise that owners of one Sadler will often look at another one when considering their next move.

Launched in 1984, the Sadler 34 was the longest and latest of the Sadler models from the original Sadler Yachts.

Whereas the 25, 29 and 32 were designed by David Sadler, the 26 and 34 were by his son, Martin, who founded the company.

The 34 soon established a reputation as a fast, well-balanced and supremely capable offshore passage-maker, distinguishing herself in multiple trans-Atlantic races as well as the Azores and Back (AZAB), Round Britain races and others.

She was also chosen to undertake a number of global circumnavigations .

In what had become a Sadler tradition by the time she was launched, she was built with the well-proven double-skinned hull that incorporated enough closed-cell polyurethane foam to keep her afloat in the event of major structural damage.

This was put to the test on one occasion, when a 34 was run down by a ship in the English Channel. She floated low in the water but lived to tell the tale.

Multiple keel choices were offered to potential buyers, including deep and shallow fins, twin keels and a centreplate.

Later fin-keelers were given new, low-cg keels designed by Stephen Jones to improve their stiffness.

With her relatively slim hull, the Sadler 34 is not the most spacious of boats below decks and the aft cabin is essentially a generous quarter berth, but it is otherwise a comfortable and practical layout.

Westerly Merlin

Westerly and Ed Dubois were another builder-and-designer team to shake up the image of the twin-keeled cruiser in the 1980s.

The earlier Laurent Giles-designed Westerlys, including the Merlin’s predecessor, the Konsort, had sailed better than they were often given credit for, but Dubois took the performance to a new level.

The Merlin is widely considered to be one of Westerly’s under-rated designs. She was launched in 1984 as the first model to have an owner’s cabin in the stern.

It was a good size and, combined with the spacious heads, roomy saloon and surprisingly sprightly performance, got her off to a good start commercially.

David Harding

David Harding has been testing boats for decades and is also a sailing photographer

Like most Westerlys, the Merlin went through several incarnations and the 28 later evolved into the Merlin 29, with the addition of a sugar scoop and an inboard rudder replacing the transom-hung original.

Then, in 1993, all the aft-cockpit Westerlys were given the ‘Regatta’ treatment: masthead rigs gave way to fractional rigs (though the Merlin had always been fractional anyway) and Ken Freivokh was called in to re-style the interiors.

The Regatta 290, as the Merlin 29 became, found a limited market but can make a great second-hand buy.

Had the Merlin been styled more sympathetically from the outset – the forward end of the coachroof especially – she might have acquitted herself rather better in commercial terms.

She would struggle to match the Sadler 290 for performance but, being up to 20 years older, can be found for a lot less money.

Keel options

All our yachts offer a choice of six different keel configurations. Take the opportunity to equip your boat with the sailing characteristics of your choice and match it your preferred sailing area.

There are up to four different fixed keel variants available. We offer the performance-orientated deep keel with lead bulb, the low-cost standard solution made out of cast steel or you can choose one of our shallow keel options.

Our twin-keel design has been optimised according to the latest hydrodynamic research, and comparison tests have shown that there is little or no loss in performance compared to the standard fin keel. The twin-keels are ideal if you wish to dry out between tides.

Alternatively, our unique swing-keel provided considerable flexibility. Instead of a half skeg and centre-line rudder, this version has double rudders. The lift-keel design does restrict you to certain interior options, but it offers high security and excellent performance, it’s controlled by electro-hydraulic mechanism that moves the full-ballast keel.

fixed-keel_001

Even our fin keels give you the possibility to choose between 4 different designs. Choose between the performance-oriented deep keel with lead bulb, the cost-effective cast iron keel or the shallow keels with minimum drafts of 1.15 m, for example, on the Sirius 310 DS.

twin keel yachts for sale

Our twin-keel design has been optimized according to the latest hydrodynamic research, and comparison tests have shown that there is little or no loss in performance compared to the standard fin keel. The twin-keels are ideal if you wish to dry out.

In November 2015 “Sailing” magazine tested the Sirius 40 DS in the fixed keel version (1.75m) and the twin keel version (1.45m). The verdict? “Despite the extra weight and only 1.45m draft, we could not find any difference in the sailing performance and the height in the wind compared to the well-sailing fixed keel version”.

Swing keels

swing-keel-1

We developed a very interesting solution to the design of a swing keel. We have worked closely with manufacturers who have more than 20 years experience with swing keels in one-off boats of up to 80 feet. More than 40 of these one-offs are sailing in the North Sea and to distant shores, they have proven to be very successful as racing boats too. We have distilled all the experience of these customers and constructors and have developed our clever design.

Our system operates with an electro-hydraulic powered swing keel that carries the whole weight of the ballast in the swinging part. When raised, it protrudes about 15cm out of the hull and distributes the weight of the boat along its length together with a small grounding plate around the lifting keel box. We use a double rudder system. On grounding, the depth of the rudders is only 5 cm less than the hull, they are very strongly built so that the boat is supported not only by the flat hull and keel but also by the double rudders.

When sailing, our system ensures the best performance with a very deep centre of gravity, especially when compared to many other systems which carry most of the weight in the grounding plate and therefore need nearly double the weight of ballast without ever reaching the same stability.

“Zefira, a magnificent, lean aluminium and carbon 50 metre yacht. A project in which, together with our designers, we put our heart”

Experienced european owners brought together a top team of Dubois, Fitzroy and Tessier to produce their dream yacht: sleek, sophisticated and impressive under sail.

The push for a single level between bridge, saloon and cockpit, combined with ultra-sleek aesthetics, nudged the Dubois design team into new territory. “To get good visibility from the helmstations we had to work hard to lower the accommodation as much as possible, while keeping an open feeling” adds McKeon.

The interior, styled and drawn by Remi Tessier , features a combination of bleached timbers and white leather which results in clean modern lines and provides bright comfortable living areas.

Fitzroy Yachts Zefira

The sea trial was pubblished on Superyacht 31 – spring 2012

Zefira S/Y is one of those few yachts that became an attraction for yacht enthusiasts and professionals  well before she hit the water.

This yacht was designed and built with the experience and passion for sailing boats her owners demonstrated from the start as well as a naval engineering and a project design team from  Ed Dubois studio for the exterior, while Remi Tessier was responsible for all the interiors. Zefira was built in a yard which enjoys a  worldwide  reputation for the construction of large sailing yachts.

fitzroy zefira

With such an opening introduction one can expect nothing less than something absolutely extraordinary, where the term used must be read in its best meaning to underscore something that has really nothing of the ordinary. We had the pleasure of talking with the owners who are currently sailing on their yacht after they had  carried out important work in the design phase with the project team to define specific guidelines and details.

Beyond the highly involving dialogue which ensued with flowing examples  of their own sailing experience and passion, we managed to grasp and better understand the idea behind the project which began with a seven metre sloop and  gradually developed in the course of the following 40 years  of which  many were spent at  sea. Putting words to emotion and feelings is never easy to do and  more so when they are other people’s. In this case however everything was a lot easier for us   thanks to our interviewee’s eloquent communicative capability.

The first point our attention was brought to was that Zefira is the largest sailing y

acht ever designed by Dubois with no fly bridge and built by Fitzroy Yachts in New Zealand.  This may strike our readers as a mere detail, but it is in fact one of the principal fundamentals outlining this project because it translates into flowing external lines and a unique profile when observed sideways on.

The choice  of doing without a fly bridge is somewhat unusual since up until  recently a “fly” had been widely accepted as  a run of the mill thing to have on a sailing yacht beyond a given size, but which nevertheless, Zefira is proud to do without giving cause for, among others ,  the following comment volunteered by some of the designers not involved in the project: “The world of sailing now stands  divided between before Zefira and after Zefira”.

Naturally enough this comment in particular is aimed at the yachts’ profile, which brings to a standstill what had become a consolidated practice on yachts this size. Aesthetics is principally  why the owners decided to do without the fly option as well as for practical reasons  they eloquently highlighted: without one  on a  50 metre sailing boat  there’s a complete total view of both what lies ahead up to the horizon and of the sail plan.

Moreover using a higher windswept and sun scorched horizontal plane rather than the main deck itself is by its very nature something destined to be exploited only sporadically and quite correctly in their opinion doesn’t justify having one.

The thought behind the whole project as the requests submitted to both designers and yard indicated,  were to enjoy a pure thorough bred for its performing lines and technical contents, capable of offering the sort of space and commodities expected when cruising extensively in all weather conditions. At a first glance the goal seems to have been easily achieved, but if  we then go into an in-depth analysis, the comments volunteered by project designers earlier seems surely appropriate. The husband and wife team (the owners) followed up on construction work from the initial stages to completion, working through the more important phases in close contact with the professional teams involved.

According to the owners the best part was witnessing the step by step progress of such an enterprise. We can understand the reasons why and genuinely  hope that in  the future such desire will generate the construction of other such extraordinary ships.

Several International prizes for design and technical contents have been awarded to Zefira. Dubois Naval Architects’ studio is proud of the recognitions bestowed since this is the largest sailing yacht project without a “fly” they’ve ever made so far and also for the passion and creativity expressed time and time again by the owners who incidentally had been the previous owners of another Dubois  project built by Alloy Yachts: Kokomo of London (now Nubero Blau). The challenge taken on by the studio was one that meant blending the huge experience acquired by the owners to innovative aesthetics, with a hull capable of delivering the sea-keeping qualities and performance requested.

The owners wished for a boat that could be another home from home: spacious, with a project design that looked ahead into the future. For this reason the design team was invited by the owners to pay them a visit and to take a look at their house to better understand what they wanted.

The choice of the yard was principally dictated by delivery times even if Fitzroy Yachts had been chosen also in function of preceding work carried out from Dubois projects.

Among some of the clever solutions highlighted by the owners in the course of our conversation we wish to mention the ease in steering they experienced and handling the yacht, of course aided by electronics and important data communication systems capable of monitoring and performing many of the required manoeuvres without hindering visibility.

The rig which is capable of carrying up to 3,000 square metres of canvass is per se a very interesting technical achievement inasmuch as it sports a 63.50 metre mast and can still be defined as being “light”. Obviously there’s a carbon fibre mast and boom, as well as fibre stays that have been purposely chosen to reduce weight high above the waterline which translates into less draught and better performance in breezes.

All of the choices adopted for Zefira mean she is very competitive on the race track even against racers and  in spite of the many commodities she carries with her.  As for the interiors and  much of the work put in by  Remi Tessier designer and the co-owner they enhanced an undoubted feeling of both tranquillity and elegance.

Gauged chromatic variety  meets the discerning eye as it takes in lighter and darker shades of handcrafted woodwork placed without ever causing excessive contrast, followed by polished steel elements and ad hoc lighting which enhances relaxation throughout every area. The space chosen to house each piece of furniture, is fruit of  careful study that has contributed into ensuring an uncompromised degree of comfort in the owners’ suite which is situated in the stern and in each of the three guest cabins as well.

One is a twin while the other two are double each one of them sports its own private bathroom. The crew quarters are situated in the bow area and with space for a lounge and crew mess room, which translates into staff’s quality living standards on board. The yacht’s convivial areas are also well distributed and large to ensure adequate privacy to guests and owners alike.

The electronics and navigation aids installed are the most modern on the market, with data and alarm control systems and displays in each of the two external command /control stations  as well as on the bridge deck as can be expected on a state of the art ship such as this. Dictated by reasons of space we have to limit our text to that which has so far been described even when the meeting with Zefira’s owners was so stimulating  we were prompted  to go further.

Since both of them  described Zefira as being a point of arrival but of departure too, we wish them to continue their research work in the yachting field and to offer us, who knows what other input and ideas in the future. For further information please contact: Angelo Colombo

ARCHIVED: This is a previously listed vessel and is no longer offered for sale If you would like assistance locating a similar vessel, Click Here to locate a similar boat

Designed by Eldredge-McInnis and built by Portsmouth Yacht Co., the Eastward Ho is a compact yet roomy sloop designed for family cruising in comfort. She is a proven design which combines traditional elegance with practical accommodations. Nothing has been overlooked to satisfy both the sailor and the cruising enthusiast. Her generous headroom, two berths, full galley, and enclosed head are unique on a boat of this size. Her spacious cockpit affords seats long enough for an afternoon nap or additional overnight guests. Sailing or under power she is lively and responsive with a motion reminiscent of a much larger boat. Her ample beam and sufficient ballast make her very stiff without sacrificing valuable draft.

Attabuoy  is in need of general cleaning inside and out and some cosmetic work. The keel will need some minor fiberglass work. The sails are like new. The engine turns over, but has not been operated for a number of years. Take a look and you will fall in love!

Eastward HO 24

Eastward HO 24 is a 23 ′ 7 ″ / 7.2 m monohull sailboat designed by Walter McInnis and built by C. E. Ryder starting in 1975.

Drawing of Eastward HO 24

Rig and Sails

Auxilary power, accomodations, calculations.

The theoretical maximum speed that a displacement hull can move efficiently through the water is determined by it's waterline length and displacement. It may be unable to reach this speed if the boat is underpowered or heavily loaded, though it may exceed this speed given enough power. Read more.

Classic hull speed formula:

Hull Speed = 1.34 x √LWL

Max Speed/Length ratio = 8.26 ÷ Displacement/Length ratio .311 Hull Speed = Max Speed/Length ratio x √LWL

Sail Area / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the power of the sails relative to the weight of the boat. The higher the number, the higher the performance, but the harder the boat will be to handle. This ratio is a "non-dimensional" value that facilitates comparisons between boats of different types and sizes. Read more.

SA/D = SA ÷ (D ÷ 64) 2/3

  • SA : Sail area in square feet, derived by adding the mainsail area to 100% of the foretriangle area (the lateral area above the deck between the mast and the forestay).
  • D : Displacement in pounds.

Ballast / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the stability of a boat's hull that suggests how well a monohull will stand up to its sails. The ballast displacement ratio indicates how much of the weight of a boat is placed for maximum stability against capsizing and is an indicator of stiffness and resistance to capsize.

Ballast / Displacement * 100

Displacement / Length Ratio

A measure of the weight of the boat relative to it's length at the waterline. The higher a boat’s D/L ratio, the more easily it will carry a load and the more comfortable its motion will be. The lower a boat's ratio is, the less power it takes to drive the boat to its nominal hull speed or beyond. Read more.

D/L = (D ÷ 2240) ÷ (0.01 x LWL)³

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds.
  • LWL: Waterline length in feet

Comfort Ratio

This ratio assess how quickly and abruptly a boat’s hull reacts to waves in a significant seaway, these being the elements of a boat’s motion most likely to cause seasickness. Read more.

Comfort ratio = D ÷ (.65 x (.7 LWL + .3 LOA) x Beam 1.33 )

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds
  • LOA: Length overall in feet
  • Beam: Width of boat at the widest point in feet

Capsize Screening Formula

This formula attempts to indicate whether a given boat might be too wide and light to readily right itself after being overturned in extreme conditions. Read more.

CSV = Beam ÷ ³√(D / 64)

Originally designed for wood contruction. The hulls of the later, FG version were built by CE Ryder (USA) and finished by Portsmouth Yacht Co. Diesel power was available as an option.

  5. Why twin keels are making a comeback

Strictly speaking, bilge keels are in addition to a long central keel, fitted near the bilge, where the hull turns from the bottom to the side of the boat.
