Participating in the Yacht Design Design Award is easy; first create an account at the A' Design Award and Competition, login to your account and third submit your design. When you upload your design, your design will be checked by the preliminary jury for its presentation. Then, your design will be assigned a preliminary score from ten (10 - best) to zero (0 - worst), your work may also be marked approved or rejected to take part in the competition. Meet the Finalists of the 2022 Young Designer of the Year Award

Oceanco and BOAT International are proud to reveal the finalists of the 2022 Young Designer of the Year Award.

This year’s pool of aspiring young designers were given a task that allowed for greater freedom and creativity than in previous years. The brief required a high-tech and environmentally-friendly design for a 65 meter motor yacht already under construction at Oceanco. Participating designers were provided with an interview that details the lifestyle and cruising plans of its new owner; the design itself was left fully open to interpretation. Andrés Otano Alonso with concept Magari

The designer’s vision : “Magari, is an Italian word that expresses the will of a desire or a total commitment to something that is difficult to achieve. The 65 metre superyacht is designed so that on the outside, inspired by the world of motor vehicles, the aesthetics are fast and fluid. The interior, meanwhile, seeks to create open spaces with large windows, rooms that flow with each other and biophilic designs inspired by modern architecture.

The designer’s vision : “Air was named after its association to life, breath and pureness. The exterior styling follows the idea with clean and minimal shapes. Its colours, lines, and the use of tinted glass are meant to fade some elements creating a single volume effect and by consequence, a more recognisable and iconic boat.

Ioana Valentina Corcodel with concept Ophelia

The designer’s vision : “Ophelia is inspired by functional architecture. The exterior is minimal and leaves space for the eco-friendly features of the vessel. Ophelia is endowed with plenty of solar cells spread on all the flat surfaces available for maximum efficiency. One of the key points of the vessel is the kinetic solar panels on the side windows, programmed to open and close depending on the sun radiation, offering a comfortable environment inside during the entire day without the usage of electric power.

Filippo Corradi with concept Castle

The designer’s vision : “Castle was born from the urgent need for an ecological transition in the world of yachts and tries to make the most of renewable energy with a focus on the sun. The project was inspired by the solar towers of California and a similar technology has been absorbed into this design in the form of a solar concentrator, which dictated the external forms of the concept. The solar tower had to be placed high up and sheltered in case of bad weather, but more importantly, it had to integrate better with the profile.

Rahmet Diko Edfi with concept Amadeus X

The designer’s vision : “The name is inspired by the middle name of the Austrian composer Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, which means “love of God”, derived from Latin  Amare  “to love” and  Deus  “God”. In harmony with the characteristics of Mozart’s musical compositions, this yacht is designed with an emphasis on elegance and balance – the balance between interior and exterior areas that support the owner’s desire for enjoyment while on board.

Martijn van Dort with concept Helios

The designer’s vision : “Helios is named after the Greek god of the sun because the yacht uses solar energy to support the owner’s environmental aspirations. The yacht is equipped with a number of solar mechanisms consisting of solar glass and panels. The exterior colour scheme provides a stylish incorporation of the solar panels into the design and complements the dynamic exterior lines. The solar panels are equipped with a heat exchanger to maximise efficiency and to store the thermal energy in the thermal storage. These sustainable features support the diesel-electric propulsion system and the owner’s requirements.

BOAT International Design & Innovation Awards

The BOAT Design & Innovation Awards acknowledge everything from the naval architecture, styling, innovation and engineering of today's superyachts, to the changing demands of owners and the increased portfolio of technology. The awards include a Lifetime Achievement Award, which honours a designer who has made an indelible impression on the industry.

1st Paola Galeazzi International Yacht Design Contest

10,000 EUROS TO THE WINNER.

A boat that does not exist, but is buildable.

To celebrate the 30th anniversary of Barche magazine, the publishing house International Sea Press is holding a competition to award scholarships to those who submit a design for a boat, which doesn’t exist yet but is actually buildable. The competition will be dedicated to Paola Galeazzi, an architect who left an important legacy in the world of modern nautical design and architecture. Paola Galeazzi was a careful interpreter of the equation of form and function, to which she added an ethical afflatus, becoming herself a point of reference for all young designers. The competition will have an international nature. The Panel of Judges for this award will be composed of eminent figures in the field of nautical design and planning. The President of the Panel will be the Architect, Professor Giovanni Zuccon, co-founder with Paola Galeazzi of the Zuccon International Project. The other names will be revealed together with the announcement of the winners.

THE FIRST PAOLA GALEAZZI INTERNATIONAL YACHT DESIGN CONTEST IS DEDICATED TO THE NAVAL ARCHITECT WITH EXEMPLARY ETHICAL CREDENTIALS WHO HAD A KNACK FOR CONCISENESS AND FOR FINDING SIMPLE SOLUTIONS TO PROBLEMS.

1. Contest Objectives

The competition aims to promote creativity in the field of boat design by catalysing the realization of exemplary projects that can combine the themes of sustainability in its different articulations.

1.1 : The competition proposes the following themes for design reflection to competitors:

– Typological innovation and morphology of the boat – Original aesthetic appearance of the boat – Methodology and typology of construction – Energy and environmental quality aspects

2. Object of the competition

The purpose of the competition is to design a recreational boat, sail, motor boat or motor sailer from 10 to 50 meters length.

3. Judging Criteria

Designs will be evaluated according to the criteria listed below:

– Innovative contribution in the type of boat proposed – Feasibility of the project, which will then have to give due consideration to the main design parameters – Innovation in design, which should not disregard the boat’s aptitude for navigation and safety on board – Choice of construction materials – Technological scenario of construction with innovative materials as well

4. Modalities of participation

4.1 : Conditions of Participation

Participation is free of charge and allows individuals or groups to develop synergies between different skills.

Each group or individual participant must have a five-character alphanumeric identification code and must identify a group leader, who will be responsible for relations with the organization. 

4.2 : Incompatibilities Members of the Jury, their family members, employees or collaborators may not take part in this Contest in any way.

4.3 : Registration and delivery of entries Registration for the Competition is free of charge and participants will be automatically registered upon receipt of the design entries and anything else required by the Organization.

4.4 : Only the alphanumeric code chosen by the entrant, see § 4.1, must be imprinted on all entries in the lower right-hand corner. No other identifying mark of the entrant shall be on the entries under penalty of exclusion from the Competition.

4.5 : The envelope containing the material that is the subject of the Contest, see § 4.4, must contain an anonymous, non-transparent envelope with only the alphanumeric code chosen by the entrant imprinted on the outside, see § 4.1.

Only projects received by May 31, 2024, will be considered eligible for judging.

4.6 : Format of the drawings. A hard copy of all graphic designs is required; these must all be in Uni A3 format.

Any photographic quality prints, relating to renderings or similar, may be made in A4 format as long as they are mounted on an A3 paper support at an appropriate scale.

A hard copy of technical specifications, reports and calculations is required; Uni A4 or Uni A3 formats are allowed for these.

A USB flash drive is required, containing all files, in high resolution (300 dpi), related to the material that is the subject of the Competition, graphic designs, technical specifications, calculations, reports and whatever else is required and delivered in hard copy. The types of files allowed are exclusively those with the extension *.jpg, *.pdf, *.tif

5. Deliverables

5.1 : The graphic works to be delivered are as follows:

a) Prospectus of the boat, inclusive of the hull b) Longitudinal section, including hull and appendages. c) Plans of each Deck Order. d) Plan of hull geometries. e) Typical cross-section of the structure and any significant details f) Sail plan if provided g) Hypothesis of motorization h) Minimum of two style sketches or two images from renderings.

Tables should indicate the scale as well as all major dimensions of the boat and shall be identifiable only by the alphanumeric code in § 4.1 and 4.3.

5.2 : The non-graphical drawings to be delivered are as follows:

i) A brief general report on the project objectives and design choices (maximum 3 thousand characters). j) A brief explanatory report on construction technologies and solutions. l) A sheet with all the significant data on the boat.

6.1 : Members of the Jury were chosen and appointed by the President of the Jury, Professor Architect Giovanni Zuccon, and the Editor-in-Chief of Barche magazine, Dr Engineer Francesco Michienzi.

6.2 : The names of the members of the Jury will be announced at the time of the proclamation.

7. Reservations

The Jury reserves the right not to deliberate on any award if the entries submitted are deemed insufficient or do not meet the competition standards.

8. Outcome of the competition

The following ranking for the two prize categories will be indicated: first, second and third place plus any mentions that the Jury deems necessary.

The winning projects will be published in a volume published by Barche magazine.

9.1 : A cash scholarship worth 10 thousand euros will be awarded to the winner, 5 thousand euros to the runner-up and 3 thousand euros to the third-place winner.

9.2 : The winners will be offered a 6-month paid internship in the technical office of an Italian shipyard or a nautical architecture and design firm.

9.3 : Mentioned projects will be included in the book published by Barche magazine.

10. Ancillary Standards

10.1 : Nationality and language Designers of all nationalities may participate; all documentation released by the organization will be in Italian and English.

10.2 : Constraints Submission of designs that differ from what is stipulated in the rules of these regulations will result in the automatic exclusion of the contestant or group.

10.3 : Exhibition and publication rights The promoters of the competition, in compliance with copyright laws, reserve the right to use the submitted material for promotion and dissemination through exhibitions and publications, also using computer means and channels without the authors having to demand rights of any kind.

10.4 : Acceptance of the rules Participation in the competition implies full acceptance of these rules and regulations.

10.5 : Shipping of entries The cost of shipping and possible insurance of the elaborates is the responsibility of the contestants. No elaborates will be returned.

10.6 : Regulatory aspects Prizes are considered consideration of work and ingenuity by Article 106 of RDL 1077 of 07/25/1940.

The Organization is exonerated from any responsibility for any disputes that may arise regarding the originality or authorship of the work.

10.7 : The intellectual and commercial property of the design remains with the Designer according to the relevant laws in force. International Sea Press reserves the right to be able to duplicate, publish and/or print the images and designs that will be received by the secretary’s office as publicity material for the event.

10.8 : The names of all participants in the Contest will be published in June 2024 on the www.barchemagazine.com website.

10.9 : Disputes Except for the rules specified in this regulation notice, reference is made to the recommendations on architecture and design competitions approved by the UNESCO General Conference in 1978.

11. Arbitration Board

Any disputes relating to the interpretation, execution or termination of these rules shall be decided using Irregular Arbitration. The Arbitrators shall be three in number, one appointed by each of the Parties and the third by agreement between the Arbitrators or, in the absence of agreement, by the President of the Court and/or Chamber of Commerce of Milan.

The Arbitrators shall decide according to equity and their decision shall be understood as superseding the will of the Parties. The decision itself will be unappealable.

The Board of Arbitration shall have its seat in Milan.

12. Submissions

12.1 : They must be sent by mail or courier exclusively to the office of the Competition Secretariat by noon on May 31, 2024, postmarked.

12.2 : A pre-registration is required containing all the candidate’s data (Name, Surname, date of birth, residence, email address and telephone number) to be sent by 31 December 2023 to [email protected]

12.3 : An exhibition of the awarded, mentioned and other projects at the sole discretion of the Jury will be held at the International Boat Show in Genoa in September 2024.

14. Data processing

The participant’s data will be processed by International Sea Press Srl and may be communicated to other partners for the activities instrumental indispensable to the realization of the activities related to the call for proposals  (organization of the call, communication, publication and dissemination of the projects and the names of the winners). Without prejudice to the rights under Articles 15 et seq. of EU Regulation 2016/679

Una barca che non c’è, ma realmente costruibile.

Per celebrare i 30 anni di esistenza della rivista Barche , la casa editrice International Sea Press indice un concorso per assegnare delle borse di studio a chi presenterà il progetto di una barca che non c’è, ma che sia realmente realizzabile. Il concorso sarà dedicato a Paola Galeazzi, architetto che ha lasciato un’eredità importante nel mondo del design e dell’architettura nautica moderna. Paola Galeazzi è stata interprete attenta dell’equazione forma e funzione, alla quale ha aggiunto un afflato etico diventando lei stessa punto di riferimento per tutti i giovani progettisti. Il concorso avrà un carattere internazionale. La Giuria di questo premio sarà composta da eminenti figure di riferimento nel campo del design e della progettazione nautica. Il Presidente della Giuria sarà il Professor Architetto Giovanni Zuccon, fondatore assieme a Paola Galeazzi della Zuccon International Project. Gli altri nomi verranno resi noti al momento della proclamazione dei vincitori.

IL PRIMO CONCORSO INTERNAZIONALE DI PROGETTAZIONE NAUTICA PAOLA GALEAZZI È DEDICATO ALL’ARCHITETTO NAVALE, ESEMPIO DI ETICA, CHE POSSEDEVA UNA CAPACITÀ DI SINTESI IN GRADO DI RISOLVERE UN PROBLEMA IN MODO SEMPLICE

1. Obiettivi del concorso

Il concorso si propone di promuovere la creatività nell’ambito della progettazione di barche catalizzando la realizzazione di progetti esemplari che siano in grado di coniugare i temi della sostenibilità nelle sue diverse articolazioni.

1.1 : Il concorso propone ai concorrenti i seguenti temi di riflessione progettuale:

– Innovazione tipologica e morfologia dell’imbarcazione – Originale aspetto estetico dell’imbarcazione – Metodologia e tipologia della costruzione – Aspetti di qualità energetica e ambientale – Innovazione tecnologica nel ciclo di costruzione

2. Oggetto del concorso

Oggetto del concorso è la progettazione di un’imbarcazione da diporto, a vela, o a motore o motor sailer da 10 a 50 metri di lunghezza.

3. Criteri di valutazione

I progetti saranno valutati in base ai criteri sotto elencati:

– Apporto innovativo nel tipo di imbarcazione proposta – Realizzabilità del progetto, che dovrà quindi tenere in debito conto dei principali parametri progettuali – Innovazione nel design, che non dovrà prescindere dall’attitudine dell’imbarcazione alla navigazione e alla sicurezza a bordo – Scelta dei materiali di costruzione – Scenario tecnologico della costruzione con materiali anche innovativi

4. Modalità di partecipazione

4.1 : Condizioni di partecipazione La partecipazione è gratuita e consentita a singoli o gruppi che possano sviluppare sinergie tra diverse competenze.

Ogni gruppo o singolo partecipante dovrà dotarsi di una sigla identificativa di cinque caratteri alfanumerici e dovrà identificare un capo gruppo, il quale sarà responsabile dei rapporti con l’organizzazione.

4.2 : Incompatibilità I membri della Giuria, i loro famigliari, i loro dipendenti o collaboratori non potranno in alcun modo prendere parte al presente Concorso.

4.3 : Iscrizione e consegna elaborati L’iscrizione al Concorso è gratuita e i partecipanti risulteranno automaticamente iscritti all’atto della ricezione degli elaborati di progetto e quanto altro richiesto da parte dell’Organizzazione.

4.4 : Su tutti gli elaborati dovrà essere impresso in basso a destra esclusivamente il codice alfanumerico scelto dal concorrente, vedi § 4.1. Nessun altro segno identificativo del concorrente dovrà essere presente sugli elaborati pena l’esclusione dal Concorso.

4.5 : Il plico contenente il materiale oggetto del Concorso, vedi § 4.4, dovrà contenere una busta anonima, non trasparente, con impresso all’esterno unicamente il codice alfanumerico scelto dal concorrente, vedi § 4.1.

Detta busta dovrà contenere un foglio in carta non intestata riportante tutti i dati del concorrente o del capogruppo, quali nome, cognome, indirizzo postale, recapiti telefonici, indirizzo e-mail, nonché il codice alfanumerico di cui sopra. Il plico contenente quanto richiesto deve essere spedito esclusivamente alla Redazione di Barche in viale Brianza 17/a, 20821 Meda (Monza e Brianza).

Saranno ritenuti giudicabili solo i progetti pervenuti entro il 31 maggio 2024.

4.6 : Formato degli elaborati È richiesta una copia cartacea di tutti gli elaborati grafici, questi dovranno essere tutti in formato Uni A3.

Eventuali stampe di qualità fotografica, relative a rendering o simili, possono essere eseguite in formato A4 purché montate su di un supporto cartaceo in formato A3 in scala appropriata.

È richiesta una copia cartacea delle specifiche tecniche, delle relazioni e dei calcoli; per queste sono consentiti i formati Uni A4 o Uni A3.

È richiesta una chiavetta USB, contenente tutti i file, in alta risoluzione (300 dpi), relativi al materiale oggetto del Concorso, elaborati grafici, specifiche tecniche, calcoli, relazioni e quanto altro richiesto e consegnato in formato cartaceo. I tipi di file ammessi sono esclusivamente quelli con estensione *.jpg, *.pdf, *.tif

5. Elaborati da consegnare

5.1 : Gli elaborati grafici da consegnare sono i seguenti:

a) Prospetto dell’imbarcazione, comprensivo di opera viva b) Sezione longitudinale, comprensiva di opera viva e appendici c) Piante di ogni Ordine di ponte d) Piano delle geometrie dello scafo e) Sezione trasversale tipica della struttura ed eventuali dettagli significativi f) Piano velico se previsto g) Ipotesi di motorizzazione h) Minimo due schizzi di stile o in alternativa due immagini da rendering

Le tavole dovranno indicare chiaramente la scala nonché tutte le dimensioni principali dell’imbarcazione e dovranno essere identificabili esclusivamente attraverso il codice alfanumerico di cui al § 4.1 e 4.3.

5.2 : Gli elaborati non grafici da consegnare sono i seguenti:

i) Una breve relazione generale sugli obiettivi del progetto e sulle scelte progettuali (massimo 3 mila battute) j) Una breve relazione esplicativa delle tecnologie e soluzioni costruttive l) Una scheda con tutti i dati significativi dell’imbarcazione

6.1 : Membri della Giuria sono stati scelti e nominati dal Presidente di Giuria, Professor Architetto Giovanni Zuccon, e dal direttore responsabile della rivista Barche, Dottor Ingegner Francesco Michienzi.

6.2 : I nomi dei membri della Giuria verranno resi noti al momento della proclamazione.

La Giuria si riserva di non deliberare alcun premio nel caso in cui gli elaborati presentati fossero giudicati insufficienti o non rispondenti alle norme di concorso.

8. Esito del concorso

Verrà indicata la seguente classifica per le due categorie del premio: primo, secondo e terzo classificato più le menzioni che la Giuria riterrà necessarie.

I progetti vincitori saranno pubblicati in un volume edito dalla rivista Barche.

9.1 : Verrà assegnata una borsa di studio in denaro del valore di 10 mila euro per il vincitore, 5 mila euro al secondo classificato e 3 mila al terzo classificato.

9.2 : Ai vincitori verrà offerto uno stage retribuito di 6 mesi nello studio tecnico di un cantiere nautico italiano o in uno studio di progettazione di architettura e design nautico.

9.3 : I progetti menzionati verranno inseriti nel libro pubblicato dalla rivista Barche .

10. Norme accessorie

10.1 : Nazionalità e lingua Potranno partecipare progettisti di tutte le nazionalità, tutta la documentazione diffusa dalla organizzazione sarà in italiano e inglese.

10.2 : Vincoli La presentazione di elaborati difformi da quanto previsto nelle norme del presente regolamento comporterà l’esclusione automatica del concorrente o del gruppo.

10.3 : Diritti di esposizione e pubblicazione I promotori del concorso, nel rispetto delle leggi sui diritti di autore, si riservano la facoltà di utilizzare il materiale inviato ai fini di promozione e divulgazione attraverso mostre e pubblicazioni, anche utilizzando mezzi e canali informatici senza che gli autori abbiano ad esigere diritti di qualsivoglia natura.

10.4 : Accettazione del regolamento La partecipazione al concorso implica la completa accettazione del presente bando regolamento.

10.5 : Spedizione elaborati Le spese di spedizione ed eventuale assicurazione degli elaborati è a carico dei concorrenti. Nessun elaborato verrà restituito.

10.6 : Aspetti normativi I premi sono considerati a tutti gli effetti corrispettivo d’opera e di ingegno ai sensi dell’art. 106 del RDL 1077 del 25/07/1940.

L’Organizzazione è esonerata da qualsiasi responsabilità per eventuali contestazioni che potessero insorgere circa l’originalità o la paternità dell’opera.

10.7 : La proprietà intellettuale e commerciale del progetto resta del Progettista secondo le vigenti leggi in materia. International Sea Press si riserva il diritto di poter duplicare, pubblicare e/o stampare le immagini e gli elaborati che perverranno in segreteria come materiale divulgativo dell’evento.

10.8 : I nominativi di tutti i partecipanti al Concorso verranno pubblicati nel giugno del 2024 sul sito www.barchemagazine.com

10.9 : Controversie Ad eccezione delle regole specificate nel presente bando regolamento, si fa riferimento alle raccomandazioni relative ai concorsi di architettura e design approvate dalla Conferenza Generale dell’UNESCO nel 1978.

11. Collegio Arbitrale

Ogni e qualsiasi controversia relativa all’interpretazione, esecuzione o risoluzione del presente regolamento verrà decisa mediante arbitrato irrituale. Gli Arbitri saranno in numero di tre, uno nominato da ciascuna delle Parti ed il terzo d’accordo tra gli Arbitri ovvero, in difetto di accordo, dal Presidente del Tribunale e/o Camera di Commercio di Milano.

Gli arbitri decideranno secondo equità e la loro decisione si intenderà come sostitutiva della volontà delle parti. La decisione stessa sarà inappellabile.

Il Collegio Arbitrale avrà sede in Milano.

12. Gli elaborati

12.1 : Dovranno essere inviati a mezzo posta o corriere esclusivamente alla sede della Segreteria del Concorso entro le ore 12 del 31 maggio 2024, fa fede la data del timbro postale.

12.2 : È necessaria una pre-iscrizione contenente tutti i dati del candidato (Nome, Cognome, data di nascita, residenza, indirizzo email e numero di telefono) da inviare entro il 31 dicembre 2023 all’indirizzo [email protected]

12.3 : Presso il Salone Internazionale della Nautica in Genova nel settembre 2024 verrà allestita una mostra dei progetti premiati, menzionati e di altri ad insindacabile giudizio della Giuria.

UPDATE: The video detailing Diller Scofidio + Renfro's winning proposal for Moscow's Zaryadye Park has just been released. In it the three partners discuss the central idea behind the proposal - "Wild Urbanism" - in which plants and people are of equal importance and " nature and architecture are merged into a seamless whole ." They explain how each of Russia's varied landscapes - its tundra, steppe, forest, and wetland - will be imported to the park and overlapped into "enfolded nodes" that will house sustainable, artificial micro-climates that will allow for year-round use of the park.

The Strelka Institute has announced the winner of the two-stage international competition to design Zaryadye park , Moscow's first park in over 50 years: Diller Scofidio + Renfro .
