Fire on the Aria SF

New £20m superyacht destroyed by fire weeks after delivery to owner

Crew and passengers escape after Aria SF catches fire while anchored off Spanish island of Formentera

A brand-new £20m superyacht has been destroyed by fire in the Balearics weeks after it was delivered to its multimillionaire owner, the Italian car industry boss Paolo Scudieri.

The 43.7-metre Aria SF caught fire on Thursday afternoon while anchored at Cala Saona, on the west coast of Formentera, according to Salvamento Marítimo , the Spanish sea search and rescue agency.

Seven crew members and nine passengers on the ship were unharmed and evacuated to other boats nearby, but the Aria is thought to be unsalvageable. The cause and origin of the fire are as yet unknown. The yacht will be towed to Ibiza later on Friday.

The 150ft vessel caught fire yesterday afternoon in Cala Saona.

The yacht, which had a gym and a pool and could accommodate up to 10 guests across five staterooms, was delivered to Scudieri late last month .

Scudieri’s suite on the main deck included a private lounge with a skylight, a terrace and direct access to an outdoor lounge via a private staircase.

The yacht, made by the Italian firm ISA, was due to make her debut at the Monaco yacht show in September.

Scudieri, the president of Adler-Hp Pelzer Group, an automotive parts supplier, is estimated to have built up a $500m fortune. He owns a Ferrari that he races in the Ferrari Challenge , a race series for Ferrari owners.

In May a superyacht estimated to be worth £6m sank while it was moored in a marina in Torbay , south-west England, after firefighters battled to extinguish a fire onboard.

Yacht on fire in Formentera waters sinks off Ibiza's coast

The remains of the ‘Aria SF’ have sunk between 7-7:30pm on Sunday, Salvamento Marítimo has reported, despite a strenuous efforts to prevent it from sinking.

Now, professionals hired by the owner, who took over the smoldering remains of ‘Aria SF ‘ on Saturday, must take care of its refloating , explained Salvamento. In the meantime, they are working on conditioning work to prepare the operation.

Spillage a concern after the fire

The embers of the fire had not been extinguished precisely to avoid unbalancing the vessel with the loads of extinguishing material, and thus increase the likelihood of sinking. However, the structure was badly damaged. With the new situation, the risk of contamination by spillage is of concern, although the vessel remains under close surveillance and the professionals in charge of the structure must keep Salvamento Martítimo informed at all times of the progress of the work.

M/Y Good Vibes Sinks After Fire in Ibiza

The 33-meter M/Y Good Vibes caught fire on August 3 while sailing in the Es Freus area between Ibiza and Formentera at about 2:30 p.m. Those that were on board were evacuated to another private vessel, but the owner and captain remained on board until assistance arrived, El Periódico de España reports. There are no reported injuries.

Salvamento Maritimo’s Salvamar Acrux towed the yacht to an empty dock in the Port d’Eivissa away from other vessels, and the fire remained ablaze when she arrived. According to Periódico de Ibiza , firefighters were waiting for the vessel at the port, along with a team of divers and Port Authority agents. Three additional vehicles had to be called to supply water to extinguish the fire, which took more than five hours. Eventually, the yacht half-sunk with a heavy stern list and sustained damage to the hull.

It is believed that the fire originated from the engine room. The Safety and Protection Division of the Port of Balears , Infrastructure Maintenance personnel, and Port Police will attempt to refloat the vessel.

The incident happened off the Spanish island of Formentera (Picture: Backgrid)

This is the dramatic moment a luxury yacht caught fire off the Spanish island of Formentera.

Footage showed the 88-foot vessel engulfed in flames, with plumes of thick, black smoke billowing into the sky.

The Italian-designed cruiser was anchored off the beach of Es Cavall d’En Borràs in the Ses Salines Natural Park near where Hollywood A-lister Leonardo DiCaprio has been spotted partying in recent days.

Five crew members and 12 passengers scrambled to abandon the vessel in a race against the time.

Only one of the crew members, a 39-year-old Spaniard, suffered minor burns and needed hospital treatment, the regional emergency response coordinators said.

Onlookers gathered nearby in their own boats to watch the fire.

Flames could be seen spreading throughout the yacht in just a matter ofminutes, turning it into a fireball.

Local media reported that the vessel belonged to professional poker player Diego Gomez Gonzalez, aka ‘The Lion’, but this has not been confirmed by authorities.

It was not immediately clear this morning if the people on board were tourists who had chartered the yacht or guests of the owner.

Their nationalities have also not yet been made public either.

The alarm was sounded around 6pm on Saturday, with Spanish coastguards sent to the scene.

The yacht was towed further out to sea where the fire was put out.

‘Poker star’s’ luxury yacht sunk by fire

The Irmao, said to be owned by Diego Gómez González, a poker player nicknamed “the Lion”, caught fire on Saturday evening

A luxury yacht has sunk after spectacularly bursting into flames off the Spanish island of Formentera.

All 17 people on board the 27m Irmao, five crew members and a dozen passengers, escaped unhurt, according to reports.

The yacht was anchored in Cavall d’en Borràs, off the north of the island, in the Balearics, and in front of a well-known restaurant called El Tiburon. The boat’s owner is said to be Diego Gómez González, 34, a professional poker player who goes by the nickname “the Lion”.

The column of smoke could be seen in Ibiza, 12 miles to the north of the Balearic island of Formentera

The blaze apparently began in the stern on Saturday evening and quickly spread, turning the yacht into a ball of fire. A huge column of smoke could be seen from as far away as the neighbouring island of Ibiza, which is 12 miles to the north.

Rescue services were able to secure a line to the burning yacht and tow it further out to sea, where it eventually sank at about 9pm. There was no pollution reported after an inspection of the area yesterday morning.

Sources told the Periodico de Ibiza newspaper that the boat was available to rent from a charter company and that it would be the responsibility of the shipowner to refloat the stricken vessel and move it to a port, where it could be assessed for restoration.

It is not known whether Gómez, who gained his nickname after wearing a full-body lion costume in Prague a decade ago, was on board at the time of the fire.

The blaze attracted others who watched from their own boats as it took hold, according to reports.

The Spanish coastguard said: “Our centre in the Majorcan capital Palma mobilised Acrux, which towed the yacht which was on fire, but it sank.”

Fire destroys 27m Sanlorenzo superyacht in Valencia

A fire has destroyed a 27 metre Sanlorenzo SX88 in the Port de Valencia on Spain’s eastern coast.

The fire broke out at around 1pm local time at Marina Sur and was eventually extinguished after six separate fire crews were called to deal with the blaze. The yacht has been identified by local media as Pesa , a 2019-built model from Sanlorenzo ’s popular SX crossover line.

According to local reports, the flames were initially extinguished but later reignited. No injuries have been reported.

After 12 hours of attempting to control the blaze, the remains of the yacht sunk. It is understood that she was carrying 8,000 litres of fuel, but emergency services have stated that the fire has not caused any discharge into the water.

Alleged arsonist, 26, set ny state trooper’s childhood home on fire over traffic tickets.

Thanks for contacting us. We've received your submission.

A New York man was arrested and charged with arson this week for allegedly setting the childhood home of a state trooper on fire — all because of some traffic tickets.

Tyler Williams, 26, was booked into Orange County Jail Wednesday after he allegedly lit up the Warwick house belonging to the father of the state trooper in an act of vengeance, Orange County District Attorney David Hoovler said.

Williams was pulled over by the unnamed trooper in Middletown on the evening of Dec. 20 and issued multiple tickets.

Tyler Williams is walked in handcuffs

Early the next morning, the home where the officer grew up and where his father still lives, went up in flames.

His father and two other people were in the home at the time, but were able to escape and were not harmed, ABC7 reported.

“I’m so upset because we’ve been neighbors for 20 years and they are great people,” resident Mildred Garcia told the local station. “It just saddened my heart.”

Investigators soon determined that the fire was lit intentionally.

A five-month investigation conducted by multiple agencies followed — during which over 20 search warrants were issued, Hoovler said.

The probe revealed that Williams, of Middletown, had searched online for personal information about the trooper who gave him traffic tickets, including his current address, just hours after he was pulled over — and before the house fire, according to the DA.

Boarded-up home

Williams found the officer’s father’s house in his searches and allegedly started the inferno there — possibly believing it was the trooper’s current address — as an act of revenge for the traffic infractions.

He was charged with arson in the second degree and is being held without bail. He pleaded not guilty and is due back in court on May 21.

Front door of boarded-up home.

The New York State Police commander of the trooper involved said Williams’ arrest should illustrate how law enforcement agencies “will stop at nothing to hold dangerous criminals who endanger the lives of others accountable for their actions.”

“We will not tolerate this type of reprehensible behavior in which a member of law enforcement was targeted for simply carrying out his duty,” Commander Michael Sumnick said in a statement.

It’s unclear how many tickets Williams was given or for what infractions and fines.

“It’s beyond comprehension to think that a traffic ticket could put our families, our homes in that type of jeopardy,” Warwick Police Chief John Rader told ABC7.

The city made him hide his boat — so he had it painted on his fence

“I’ll do what they want, but I’m not going to do it their way.”

ibiza yacht on fire

When the city of Seaside, Calif., ordered resident Etienne Constable to build a fence to cover the boat parked in his driveway, he complied. But the puckish way he did it — hiring his artist neighbor to paint a realistic mural of the same exact boat on his fence — has brought him viral attention.

“We kind of hit the sweet spot between following the rules and making an elegant statement to the contrary,” says Constable.

Constable, who works in business development, has lived in the same house in Seaside for 29 years. For most of that time, his boat trailer — often with a boat attached — has sat in his driveway without issue. But in July 2023, he received a letter from the city, asserting that the municipal code requires that boats and trailers be “screened on the side and front by a six-foot-high fence,” and threatening him with a citation and a $100 fine if he failed to comply. (The Washington Post has reviewed the letter.)

To Constable, the letter came out of nowhere. The ordinance itself is not new. He hadn’t heard any complaints from neighbors, and he’s kept the boat, which he named Might as Well and uses to fish “as often as I can,” for four years in his driveway.

“I thought, ‘This is ridiculous,’ and my first reaction was to leave a nasty, nasty message at the city hall,” he says. “And then I thought, well, I might as well build a screen … I’ll do what they want, but I’m not going to do it their way.”

So he started brainstorming. That’s when he had a chat with his neighbor, Hanif Panni, a muralist and graphic artist, about potentially painting the fence to look exactly like the space it was built to cover up. The two batted ideas back and forth over the fence that separated their yards. “We wanted to make an illusion,” says Panni.

Panni, whose artist name is Hanif Wondir , was in. He had other projects on his docket, and wasn’t able to start painting the boat on the fence until early May. It took four days to complete. As he worked, people driving or walking by would stop to comment on the optical illusion, and a few neighbors told him that they, too, had received letters about the ordinance, says Panni.

The actual fence cost a few hundred bucks, per Constable, who did the labor himself. He paid Panni for painting the mural, too.

With Constable’s permission, Panni shared the finished work on social media. It quickly went viral.

“The more people see something, the more opinions there are about it … and it’s just so fun to see those branches stemming off of something that I created,” says Panni. “ … One of the reasons why I do public art, and art in general, is to inspire those conversations.”

The mural ultimately led to an approving phone call to Constable from Nick Borges, Seaside’s acting city manager, on Friday evening. Borges first saw the images of the painted fence when a friend sent them to him — neither of them knew the photos were taken in Seaside. “I thought, ‘wow, that’s pretty creative.’ I laughed at it, and then I started getting calls from local media,” says Borges.

After years of complaints that the city was too lax about code enforcement, Borges says Seaside hired someone to enforce its codes, hence the letters sent to residents. Constable’s case was closed out in November, when the fence (at that point, without the mural) was spotted, says Borges.

“We’re not taking any action,” he says. “The only action I’m going to take is a high five, and that’s it.”

This story has been updated with comment from Seaside’s acting city manager Nick Borges.

From shark bites to yacht fires, South Florida trauma survivors show gratitude for their medical teams

Beyond the daily tragedies of car crashes, gunshot wounds and bike accidents, South Florida trauma units treat the unexpected.

Those traumas have included a Pembroke Pines plane passenger injured in a crash, a West Palm Beach construction worker crushed by an excavator, and a Miami boater set ablaze by a yacht fire.

And then there was the 24-year-old who fell into shark-infested waters and suffered a gaping hole in his leg. Doctors at St. Mary’s Hospital in West Palm Beach cleaned the wound to prevent infection and stitched the footlong bite.

This week, trauma survivors returned to the South Florida hospitals that took lifesaving measures to keep them alive. They celebrated their recoveries and heaped praise and gratitude on the medical teams that provided their care.

Trauma Survivors’ Day has become an annual celebration that draws back patients who benefited from high-level trauma care available in about a half-dozen South Florida hospitals.

Palm Beach County resident Roy McCarty, 83, returned to Delray Medical Center with the mangled tire of the bicycle he rode when hit by a car. Thrusting the tire in the air, he explained that three things saved his life: the wheel that took the brunt of the hit, the coincidence that he landed on the driveway of a fire department, and the trauma team at Delray Medical Center that provided emergency care. He spent 11 weeks at the hospital with a fractured spine, a punctured lung and all but two ribs fractured.

McCarty told fellow survivors and medical staff at the hospital that it took him a year to fully recover.

“I am extremely grateful to have each day,” he said at the hospital’s survivors’ day event on Wednesday.

He is back riding his bike, but only short distances, and not on the road, he said.

Trauma surgeons, doctors, nurses and caregivers who spoke at celebrations noted that it is rare they see their patients after they are fully recovered — making Trauma Survivors’ Day particularly meaningful.

At Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital in Hollywood, Dr. Tamar Levene, a pediatric surgeon, and her team treat thousands of patients annually.

“One of unique things about serving the community in South Florida, is we have nice weather year-round so we see bike accidents and drownings 365 days a year,” she said.

The most common traumas are pedstricans striuck by cars, or bike accidents, she said.

However, she has treated less common traumas, too, during her eight years at Joe DiMaggio: a child falling from a balcony, water park injuries, dog bites, and just recently, a boy whose hand required major reconstruction as the result of a drone accident.

Levene said anywhere from 10 to 20 medical staff participate in trauma care for a patient, and often specialists are called in.

“There is a lot involved in assuring someone’s physical and mental well being,” she said.

Federal grand jury issues new indictment in conception boat fire, captain responsible for safety on dive boat charged in indictment that alleges misconduct, gross negligence and inattention to duties in deaths of 34 people.

LOS ANGELES – The captain of the P/V Conception – a Santa Barbara-based dive boat that caught fire near Santa Cruz Island in 2019, resulting in the deaths of 33 passengers and one crew member – was indicted today by a federal grand jury on a charge of misconduct or neglect of ship officer.

The one-count indictment naming Jerry Nehl Boylan, 68, of Santa Barbara, alleges a series of failures and the abandoning of his ship, which constituted “misconduct, gross negligence, and inattention to his duties” and led to the deaths of 34 victims.

The new indictment reinstates the charge against Boylan after a federal judge last month dismissed a previous indictment charging Boylan with the same offense because it did not allege gross negligence.

The charge of misconduct or neglect of ship officer contained in the new indictment alleges that Boylan – who “was responsible for the safety and security of the vessel, its crew, and its passengers” – failed his responsibilities in several ways, including by:

  • failing to have a night watch or roving patrol;
  • failing to conduct sufficient fire drills and crew training;
  • failing to provide firefighting instructions or directions to crewmembers after the fire started;
  • failing to use firefighting equipment, including a fire ax and fire extinguisher that were next to him in the wheelhouse, to fight the fire or attempt to rescue trapped passengers;
  • failing to “to perform any lifesaving or firefighting activities whatsoever at the time of the fire, even though he was uninjured”;
  • failing to use the boat’s public address system to warn passengers and crewmembers about the fire; and
  • becoming the first crewmember to abandon ship “even though 33 passengers and one crewmember were still alive and trapped below deck in the vessel’s bunkroom and in need of assistance to escape.”

The Conception was a 75-foot, wood-and-fiberglass passenger vessel that docked in Santa Barbara Harbor. During a Labor Day weekend dive trip in 2019, the boat carried 33 passengers and six crew members, including Boylan. During the early morning hours of September 2, 2019, a fire broke out while the boat was anchored in Platt’s Harbor near Santa Cruz Island. The fire, which engulfed the boat and led to its sinking, resulted in the deaths of 34 people who had been sleeping below deck. Five crewmembers, including Boylan, were able to escape and survived.

Boylan will be directed to appear in the coming weeks in United States District Court for an arraignment on the new indictment.

The charge of misconduct or neglect of ship officer carries a statutory maximum penalty of 10 years in federal prison.

An indictment contains allegations that a defendant has committed a crime. Every defendant is presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt.

The FBI; the Coast Guard Investigative Service; and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives are investigating this matter.

Assistant United States Attorneys Mark A. Williams, chief of the Environmental and Community Safety Crimes Section; Matthew W. O’Brien of the Environmental and Community Safety Crimes Section; and Brian R. Faerstein of the Public Corruption and Civil Rights Section are prosecuting this case.
