She’s stout and sultry? How’d they make that happen?

These were my initial thoughts as the all-aluminum, Dutch-built Van der Heijden 52 caught my gaze quayside in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. If boat sections could speak, her plumb bow might say it’s ready to slice and dice sloppy seas, while her broad shoulders would be more likely to bellow, “It’s clobbering time!” She proposes quite an intriguing juxtaposition, one that the builder and the 52’s champion stateside, Dick Phillips, know how to do well.

Phillips, whose father, Herbert, founded Striker Yachts, has a lifetime of experience creating aluminum boat lines with companies like Heesen, Diaship and others. And over the last 20 years, Van der Heijden has built and sold more than 400 boats to a global market. In fact, my test 52 is Hull No. 2.

24-meter Phantom Model By Van der Heijden ​ Dutch builder Van der Heijden launched their latest planing yacht in the new Phantom series. This one is 24-meters or around 79-feet. This yard typically builds yachts 12-meters to 32-meters. Their performance line is usually built in aluminum and the longer range offerings in steel. As for the Phantom 24-meter model this one definitely ticks the performance box and is powered by a pair of MAN V8 1200 horse power engines which allow for a top speed in the region of 34-knots.

The Phantom line can be built from 17.82-meters to 28-meters and flying bridge or pilothouse variants. The interior is fully custom built for an accommodation of 6 guests. Basically once you have finalized the details their team of craftspeople will bring it from concept to reality. Every detail is crafted and finished within the shipyards. The story of Van Der Heijden Yachts starts in 1993 when Ronald Van Der Heijden terminates his job as propulsion engineer at the Royal Dutch Navy to start his yard for luxury yachts. Since then this still privately owned yard created an impressing track record of building over 400 yachts for satisfied clients all over the world.

As noted, in the mid-nineteen nineties, a young and passionate entrepreneur Ronald VanDerHeijden made a life-changing decision to create a personal dream come true that would manifest his own life and creative spirit founding  a modern shipyard where he would build luxury yachts to his ultimate degree of meticulous consciousness that exists in his own mind’s eye.  During his formative years in the Royal Dutch Navy, he acquired  technical proficiency on vessel systems, design, and overall knowledge of the brutal hazards of the sea and their solutions, honing on the job common sailor-sea-know-how that would govern his whole life through in career and and lifestyle.

From that humble beginning, it was not long before his first yacht caught the seas crest, cut the waves and swells, to the degree of safety and quality that make this shipyard one that rests at the top of any sea no matter weather conditions or currents.  The strength of welded steel and aluminum construction became the preferred company building component materials of choice.  The Dutch shipbuilding heritage that had been honed for centuries against the unpredictable and and often tragically angry North Sea, became their nemesis for design challenge, to which their development of the VDH Shipyard rose to the challenge. In the years following, it did not take long for his passions in design and safety grew into one of the most respected shipyards of the modern Dutch manned shipbuilding arena in the Netherlands.

Today, the local born and bred craftsmen of VDH Shipyard are team oriented and have built more than 400 luxury yachts in Aluminum/Steel welded and Composite formats for clients all over Europe and now the world, with YachtEZ Import And Export having opened the market in the USA with the sale of the first VDH 52- Commuter imported to its shores in Miami, FL.

Naval architect, Ronald van der heijden , from the founding of the shipyard, is named after him, adhered to the idea that a satisfied customer has the right to contribute to the improvement of their future home on the water. Of course, his vision of the perfect boat is not limited. He suggested that the market sturdy steel yachts are medium in size — from 11 to 33 meters. The most for those who have not matured to the size of the megayacht, but prefer steel to fiberglass. The advantages of a metal case are obvious: it is safer and more sustainable to damage. In shallow water and in areas where you can stumble upon a rock or reef, awareness of the strength of your boat will save the nerve cells. By the way, to create their own shipyard van der heijden built ships for the Navy and received in these times of knowledge, by his own admission, actively applied in civil shipbuilding.

as for the cost, the Van Der Heijden yachts cheap you will not name, but it's more than a fair price tag for all steel vessel, custom built and designed for long trip comfort. In addition, you don't have to spend money on the team to manage the yacht enough of the captain/owner and a friendly assistant.

Powered by twin diesel Inveco (C 13 825) 825hp engines, she comfortably cruises at 22 knots, reaches a maximum speed of 25 knots. Her low draft of 1.5m/4'11" makes her primed for accessing shallow areas and cruising close to the shorelines. Her water tanks store around 1,500 Litres of fresh water.
