A $75,000,000 superyacht making its maiden voyage to be united with its billionaire owner for the first time has been captured by an amateur photographer in the area.

The boat, lit with the glowing title TOP FIVE II, is a 61m long yacht, only completed in the summer of 2021.

The custom-made yacht is thought to have been passing through Poole on Friday (September 3) on her maiden voyage from the Dutch boat yard where she was made.

Amateur photographer Craig Horrocks, 33, from Poole, spotted the superyacht passing through and knew it was something out of the ordinary.

Superyacht TOP FIVE II on her maiden voyage through Poole Harbour

He said: "I was down Poole Harbour and saw this huge yacht at about 6.30pm on Friday evening so I took a picture of it and zoomed in because it had lights on the side of it.

"That’s where I found out who owned it and how much the yacht was worth. Mega Money!"

Boating experts SuperYachtWorld say the vessel is owned by Terry Pegula.

If Mr Pegula is the owner, the yacht is owned by a man who is on the Forbes Billionaires list with an estimated net worth of $5.7B.

Mr Pegula is known to have made his money out of fracking and currently owns two US national sports teams, the Buffalo Bills and Buffalo Sabres.

Craig added: "I 100% knew it would cost a lot - it looked massive and very flash."

It certainly is out-of-the-ordinary. The made-to-order superyacht is built by Dutch ship makers Hakvoort . The firm, which has royal patronage, said TOP FIVE II was created as a bespoke yacht for an experienced owner.

The vessel can carry up to 12 guests and host 19 crew members.

Buffalo sabres.

On February 18, 2011, he purchased Hockey Western New York LLC (the holding company that owns the Buffalo Sabres and the Buffalo Bandits of the National Lacrosse League) from previous owners Tom Golisano, Larry Quinn, and Dan DiPofi for $189 million.

Pegula’s purchase made an immediate positive impact, with players, fans, and alumni invigorated by his investment in the team, the then First Niagara Center, and the building of HarborCenter across the street. Pegula was quoted as saying, “Starting today, the Buffalo Sabres’ reason for existence, will be to win a Stanley Cup.”

Buffalo Bandits

Included in the Sabres purchase was their National Lacrosse League counterpart, the Buffalo Bandits which have won four NLL championships.

Rochester Americans

In May 2011, Pegula began negotiations on behalf of the Sabres to re-purchase the Rochester Americans, which had served as the Sabres’ American Hockey League affiliate from 1979 to 2008 (and had been owned by the Sabres from 1979 to 1996); the deal was completed in late June 2011.

As part of the deal, the Americans had to be split off from its NLL counterpart the Rochester Knighthawks since Pegula owned the Bandits due to ownership rules at the time. Along with the purchase of the Americans came upgrades to the team’s arena, the Blue Cross Arena.

Buffalo Bills

On September 9, 2014, Pegula announced the winning binding bid to purchase the National Football League’s Buffalo Bills, a team that was placed up for sale after the death of the original owner and team founder, Ralph Wilson.

Pegula was a favorite among most local Bills fans and local politicians to buy the team due to his commitment to the Western New York area and local connections.

He competed against future U.S. President Donald Trump and musician Jon Bon Jovi, the latter of whom was backed by principals of the Toronto-based Maple Leaf Sports and Entertainment for the team. It was reported that the Pegulas made a $1.4 billion bid, all in cash.

On September 17, 2014, the Pegulas were unanimously approved by the NFL’s finance committee and were then scheduled to be presented at the NFL owners’ meeting on October 8, 2014, for final owner approval; the Pegulas received unanimous approval from the league’s owners on October 8 and closed the deal on October 10.

Pegula’s first major order of business was to end the Bills Toronto Series, which he did in an agreement reached on December 3, 2014. Upon the purchase of the Bills, Pegula and his wife Kim introduced One Buffalo, a marketing campaign that has since evolved into a brand used across all of their sports teams and associated products.

Buffalo Beauts

On December 21, 2017, it was announced that Pegula had acquired the Buffalo Beauts of the National Women’s Hockey League. This made the Beauts the first NWHL team not owned by the league, the first professional women’s hockey team in North America owned by the same person that owned the market’s NHL team and got Pegula into women’s hockey.

Rochester Knighthawks

In 2018, Pegula reached an agreement to purchase the intellectual property of the Rochester Knighthawks of the National Lacrosse League in the autumn of 2019. Rochester Sports Group owner Curt Styres orchestrated the sale as he planned on moving his staff and roster to a new Halifax NLL team set to debut in the winter of 2020.

Terrence Pegula Investments

Natural gas.

After working for a time for Getty Oil and Felmont Oil Co., Pegula founded East Resources, a natural gas drilling company, with $7,500 from family and friends. It profited heavily from the discovery of deep layers of natural gas in the Marcellus Formation and the development of the hydraulic fracturing (“fracking”) recovery process. Pegula eventually sold Pennsylvania, New York, and Rocky Mountain assets of the company to Royal Dutch Shell for approximately $4.7 billion.

He sold the Ohio and West Virginia assets of the company to American Energy Partners, LP for $1.75 billion in 2014.[20] Pegula also owns Greater Rocky Mountain Regional Oil & Gas in Colorado and Wyoming, and JKLM Energy in Pennsylvania.

Terrence Pegula Real estate

In 2012, he won a bid for the development rights to the Webster Block on Buffalo’s waterfront. The $170 million hockey-themed HarborCenter building, which is anchored by the two rinks, a large parking garage, retail, restaurants, and a hotel, mostly opened in November 2014 with the rinks, restaurants, and parking garage fully completed and opened in August 2015 with the completion and opening of the hotel and retail.

Pegula is also the operator of KeyBank Center and Blue Cross Arena. In 2017, Pegula purchased 79 Perry Street, near KeyBank Center and teamed up with Labatt USA to redevelop the building into a mixed-use facility including a small test brewery called the “Labatt Brew House” and a restaurant called “The Draft Room” as well as Labatt’s U.S. headquarters, Pegula Sports and Entertainment’s headquarters, and residential space.

Terrence Pegula Other investments

Pegula also owns a share of Black River Entertainment, an independent country music label. The label features such acts as Kelsea Ballerini, Kellie Pickler, and Craig Morgan as well as the related Black River Publishing and Sound Stage Studio all under the Black River label based in Nashville, Tennessee.

Also under the Pegula umbrella is Impact Sports Performance, two high-performance athletic training facilities which are based in Boca Raton, Florida, and HarborCenter in Buffalo.

In addition, he owns 716 Food and Sport, a two-floor sports-themed restaurant that serves as the main business tenant of HarborCenter. Through a partnership with Southern Tier Brewing Company, Pegula launched a “One Buffalo” branded craft beer that sells at all Pegula-owned properties and elsewhere in the region.

The One Buffalo brand has also been extended to a flavor of Perry’s Ice Cream (which already licensed Bills and Sabers-themed flavors prior to Pegula’s purchases of the teams) and premium cupcakes, both formulated by Pegula’s wife, a pronounced fan of desserts.

Terrence Pegula Philanthropy

Penn state hockey.

An alumnus of Pennsylvania State University (Penn State), Pegula donated $102 million for the construction of the on-campus Pegula Ice Arena in 2010. As a result, the Penn State Nittany Lions, which had fielded club teams in both men’s and women’s hockey for years, would be able to transition both teams into NCAA Division I starting in the 2012–13 season.

This led to a domino effect across the men’s college hockey landscape. Because six Big Ten universities now had Division I men’s hockey programs (the minimum number of teams required under Big Ten bylaws for official conference sponsorship, and also the minimum required for a conference to be an automatic postseason qualifier), it was announced that Minnesota, Wisconsin, Michigan, Michigan State, and Ohio State would join Penn State in the Big Ten hockey conference starting in the 2013–2014 season.

As a result, the CCHA ceased operations, with most schools (save for the three that joined the Big Ten and Notre Dame) joining the WCHA. Miami University and Western Michigan University, also previously in the CCHA, joined the upstart National Collegiate Hockey Conference along with former WCHA members St. Cloud State, Minnesota-Duluth, Denver, Colorado College, Nebraska-Omaha, and North Dakota.

Ex-CCHA member Notre Dame joined Hockey East, which then recruited UConn from the Atlantic Hockey Association to begin to play in Hockey East in 2014. After the dust settled, the ECAC was the only Division I conference not affected by the major conference realignment.

Because Penn State’s arrival gave the Big Ten only four varsity women’s hockey programs, that conference was unable to add the sport, meaning that the women’s hockey landscape did not undergo the radical changes that occurred in the men’s game. The Penn State women’s team settled in College Hockey America, a league that sponsors only women’s hockey.

Houghton College

The Pegulas donated $12 million to Houghton College in Houghton, New York, of which Kim Pegula is an alumna, to build the Kerr-Pegula Athletic Complex. The facility includes new baseball and softball stadiums and a 115,000-square-foot field house with an eight-lane 200-meter track, five tennis courts, a weight room, a cardiac fitness center, and locker rooms.

The new facility is mainly targeted toward Houghton College intercollegiate athletics, which recently moved up to Division III Athletics and the Empire 8 Conference. It opened on October 4, 2014.

Terrence Pegula Political views

Pegula has been identified as a Republican; he does not speak publicly about his specific political views. Pegula and his wife have made political donations to politicians of both parties, generally to incumbents.

In 2010, Pegula and his wife donated $280,000 to Republican Tom Corbett’s campaign during the Pennsylvania governor’s race. They were the largest contributors to the Pennsylvania Attorney General.

In New York, Pegula and his wife donated $25,000 to New York Governor Andrew Cuomo’s campaign during the 2014 elections and also donated $12,000 to Buffalo Mayor Byron Brown, $2,500 to Senator Chuck Schumer, and $250 to state senator Tim Kennedy, all Democrats.

Pegula expressed support for legalizing ridesharing in upstate New York, the only area where it at the time remained illegal (as of 2017, New York State had only legalized it in New York City), and has announced intent to partner with Uber to provide transportation to Pegula’s sporting events.

Terrence Pegula Donald Trump

You may have noticed that when Donald Trump is involved with something, Donald Trump tries to make that thing all about Donald Trump. Take the sale and subsequent purchase of the Buffalo Bills, for instance.

Trump was one of several bidders who tried to purchase the Bills from the Ralph Wilson estate. However, Trump’s bid came up short of the $1.4 billion bid placed by Buffalo Sabres owner Terry Pegula.

Trump is believed to have bid $1 billion for the team. Bon Jovi’s group reportedly bid more than Trump ($1.05 billion), so it’s not clear how Trump drove up to the price. But if Donald Trump says he did, then Donald Trump did because Donald Trump said so. Anyway, not everyone is like Trump.

Here was the statement released by the Bon Jovi group after Pegula’s bid won: “On behalf of Myself, Larry Tanenbaum, and Edward Rogers, we wish Terry and Kim Pegula all the best as they continue the legacy and tradition of the Buffalo Bills and the Wilson family.”

Terrence Pegula Yacht

Pegula’s new yacht, Top Five II was named after his five children, it is a cruising speed of 14Knots, powered by caterpillar engines, and can host 12 guests and 18 crew members. The yacht was designed by Sinot Yacht Design in 2021 as project YN251.  Prior to owning the new yacht, Pegula had another smaller yacht that was 48 meters Christensen, he sold it and it was later named Mi Amore.

The yacht features an entire deck dedicated to the owner, equipped with a private al-fresco dining area, a state-of-the-art suite, a jacuzzi, and five spacious cabins. Comfort is also ensured for staff members, with private cabins provided for the captain, chief engineer, and first officer, along with a large dining area for the crew.

The upper deck is designed for warm weather enjoyment. Pegula , a four-time tour winner, can stay fit in a large swimming pool, and the area also includes barbecue facilities, sun pads, and a sauna.

This floor also houses two lounges, one indoor and one outdoor, and is crowned by a massive fire pit area for family and guests to relish late into the night. However, the yacht isn't solely for relaxation; it's also built for speed.

The Top Five II is powered by twin Caterpillar engines, enabling it to reach speeds over 15 knots (17 mph/28kph) with an autonomous range of 4,200 nautical miles (4,800 miles/7,770 km) at cruising speed. The vessel also boasts a premium dynamic positioning system, zero-speed stabilisers, a chart system, and a sonar.

Pegula, who has ventured into her own business projects and launched her own skincare line, Ready 24, in 2017, hasn't expressed any retirement plans yet. But considering the gift that awaits her and her siblings, it's understandable if she's already looking forward to her post-WTA Tour days.

Bills ownership is accustomed to a certain 'lifestyle' that could hurt its NFL franchise

When you’re new to owning a sports team, the best practice is usually to bring in people experienced in running such an organization to help guide you and teach you. A handbook of sorts, if you will.

The Pegulas apparently are not people who believe in those kinds of teachers, even when there is a multibillion-dollar investment like the Buffalo Bills involved.

In a lengthy story on Monday, Tim Graham of The Athletic Buffalo detailed an increasingly “toxic culture” at Pegula Sports and Entertainment (PSE), Terry and Kim Pegula’s organization that includes the Buffalo Bills and Buffalo Sabres , with current and former employees describing the atmosphere within the company.

The picture painted isn’t pretty, particularly for Kim Pegula, and gives the sense that at best the couple has bitten off more than they can chew in recent years, and at worst could potentially do significant harm to the Bills just as they’ve become successful in the NFL again.

The Pegulas became instant heroes in the Buffalo area in October 2014 when they paid a then-record $1.4 billion for the team after its original owner and founder Ralph Wilson died. They vowed to keep the team in western New York. They were known in the city because they’d bought the Sabres three years earlier, and got a massive ovation when they were introduced at their first home game.

At the same time, they unveiled a new ethos: “One Buffalo.” But now those within PSE say that’s nothing more than a marketing campaign to splash on merchandise.

Kim Pegula serves as president of PSE, and by extension is president of both the Bills and Sabres, as well as the four minor league sports teams they own.

The root of most of PSE’s problems can likely come back to this: It’s an impossible undertaking. Being president of an NFL team is a full-time job and then some; same for being president of an NHL team. Being president of a multi-organization conglomerate is a full-time job.

Pegula wants to do all, and as a result things will suffer.

In emailed responses to questions from Graham (give her credit for facing the music), she noted that “there [is] no handbook for being a sports owner,” but this is where team presidents come in handy. Ones who have experience.

Instead, Pegula seems to have pushed full-speed ahead over five years and now has to clean up the mess. It’s not clear where her husband, Terry, is in all of this, as Kim is the one mentioned in the report.

‘Pegula Family Goals’

The reasons why she’s cleaning things up, however, may not all be what you’d think.

In January, not long after the Bills posted their first 10-win season since 1999 and made the playoffs for the second time in three years, Pegula, from her home in Boca Raton, Florida, met with employees from multiple PSE departments via video conference.

She told them to prepare for not just increased scrutiny on budgets, but for tough times and sacrifices. Some PSE employees had already been nervous that moves would be made to “right-size” the company after it had expanded too quickly.

As she spoke, Pegula had a video presentation, which included the slide, “Pegula Family Goals.” There were three headers listed : “Win Championships,” “Sustainability” and “Return on Investment.”

As she discussed return on investment, Pegula said it also meant maintaining the family’s lifestyle, current and former employees recounted to Graham. Vice presidents who circulated the printed slide presentation to different departments reiterated that maintaining the Pegula family lifestyle is a primary organizational goal.

“People were walking out of those meetings like they’d been punched in the gut,” a Bills management source told Graham. “We just made the playoffs in the NFL, where it’s impossible to lose money. We’re firing on all cylinders. Now we have to pinch pennies? “The morale after those meetings was lower than the day Ralph Wilson died.”

“What that told me,” a PSE employee said, “is I’m getting laid off before they cancel that family trip to Tahiti.”

We all — well, most of us anyway — know what should and shouldn’t be said in business settings. Usually the idea is to try to keep morale high even as you discuss cutbacks, and stress that cuts now are for the greater good.

Telling employees in your organization, many of whom can’t fathom paying $1.4 million for something let alone $1.4 billion, that they’ll be working harder for the same amount of money so that your lifestyle won’t be impacted isn’t usually in the “how to talk to employees” handbook.

Over the last several months, dozens of people within PSE have been let go, including nearly the entire hospitality division, which was laid off last month. More than 100 other employees have been furloughed.

Once the coronavirus stopped the Sabres’ season and impacted that of the Buffalo Bandits lacrosse team, the Pegulas initially said they would wait and see how things played out, then said they’d pay Sabres employees when the remainder of the NHL season was officially canceled ( this is not unlike the Jacobses , who own the Boston Bruins).

The Pegulas’ big sacrifice to this point: pausing completion of their super-yacht, which was being built in Amsterdam. This, we assume, is a step up from their current yacht, the 157-foot “Top Five” Terry has had since 2005.

No one is blind to the notion that wealthy people are accustomed to certain things. But telling the people on whose backs you maintain your empire out loud that one of your organizational goals is to make sure you aren’t personally impacted is a sure way to create a poor work environment.

As for the Bills, those January meetings were the first time that team was exposed to the larger issues at PSE.

There’s a belief within the organization that the Bills are the only one of the Pegulas’ teams turning a profit — a source told Graham the Sabres, who haven’t been to the playoffs since the 2010-11 season, have been losing between $40 million and $60 million each of the past few seasons.

Those close to Bills coach Sean McDermott reportedly said the meetings earlier this year were cause for concern. McDermott and general manager Brandon Beane have meticulously crafted a new culture in the franchise and he worries that low morale organization-wide will affect that culture.

Graham’s entire piece is worth the time — there are also ticket salespeople who aren’t getting commissions in a timely fashion, numerous executives leaving for sexual harassment and other workplace misbehavior, money being spent on vanity projects for family members and other family members getting cushy gigs, the firings of three well-liked Sabres vice presidents (who each only received two weeks health insurance coverage on the way out), and a seemingly thinly veiled hint that the Pegulas want to build a new stadium, which seemed unlikely to happen with significant public funds six months ago, and nearly impossible now.

“We are trying to correct our mistakes and the mistakes of others with the goal in mind that we need to be better in many areas to not only survive but to thrive,” Kim Pegula wrote in her email. “Despite these challenges, we believe there is still a lot of optimism and opportunity here in Western New York with the right people in place and the collaboration of all our entities we always envisioned.”

As long as her lifestyle stays up to her standards.

Terry Pegula’s decision on Don Granato looms large as Sabres miss playoffs again

BUFFALO, NEW YORK - APRIL 5: Head coach Don Granato of the Buffalo Sabres works the bench during an NHL game against the Philadelphia Flyers on April 5, 2024 at KeyBank Center in Buffalo, New York. Buffalo won, 4-2. (Photo by Bill Wippert/NHLI via Getty Images)

BUFFALO, N.Y. — On the day the Buffalo Sabres signed coach Don Granato to a contract extension, he wasn’t necessarily feeling like he had job security. That was the day before the 2022-23 season started. He had been the coach for one full season after finishing the season before that as an interim coach. Granato still had two seasons left on his contract, but owner Terry Pegula saw enough positives in the direction of the Sabres to extend Granato for two more beyond that at just under $2 million per season. Pegula had already given a similar extension to general manager Kevyn Adams.

“In our profession, there is no stability,” Granato said then. “You’re used to that, you’re accustomed to that. This is nice, but our stability is success day to day. I can’t wrap my mind around it too much other than a few things I will share. This is the place I want to be, this is a place I want to make right and I want to win here. I think what we’re building and the progression, the sequential movements that we’ve seen and we’ll continue to see, we are going to win here and we are going to be successful doing what we’re doing.”

Two seasons have passed since Granato made those comments. In that time, the Sabres finished with 91 points in 2022-23 and are now guaranteed to finish with fewer points this season. Their loss to the Stars on Tuesday clinched a 13th straight season without the playoffs after they were a popular pick to take the next step and get to the postseason. Instead, the Sabres were one of the most disappointing teams in hockey.

“Expectations I look at as a privilege,” Granato said Thursday. “The expectations come because we’ve moved this thing to a point where expectations have risen. I’m happy for that. I’ve been in this situation where this is all natural and this is all something we have to go through to get to the next level. You perform to a certain level, you raise expectations. For me, I’m happy we’re here. This is great. That means we did some really good work. Look at where we were two years ago. This is the territory. It comes down to winning more hockey games.

Sabres miss playoffs, tie longest active playoff drought in pro sports

Despite some turbulent moments, Granato has kept his job. He will finish the year as the sixth-longest-tenured coach in the NHL and the longest-tenured coach without a playoff appearance. He’s now coached the seventh-most games without a playoff appearance in NHL history. The Sabres have three games left in a season that has cast some doubt about what they’re building under Granato and Adams.

The Sabres have allowed two or more goals in the first period of a game 29 times. They are 7-22-1 in those games. Buffalo had also allowed the most first-period goals in the NHL this season and had a first-period goal differential of minus-33. That was a big reason the Sabres played October, November and December at a 73-point pace, the sixth-worst points percentage in the NHL during that span.

Buffalo also took a significant step back offensively. After finishing third in the NHL in goals scored last season, the Sabres are now 21st in scoring. After scoring the fourth-most goals at five-on-five last season, the Sabres are 10th in that department this season. This season, the Sabres are 22nd in the NHL at generating high-danger chances at five-on-five, according to Natural Stat Trick. Last season, they were 16th.

The biggest factor in the scoring dropoff, though, was the Sabres’ power play, which ranks 29th in the NHL converting 16.5 percent of chances. Last season, the Sabres had the ninth-best power play in the league.

The message Granato tried to send often this season is that the Sabres were learning to become a better defensive team and that the attention to defense took away from the offense.

The most dramatic improvement came in the raw goals against numbers. The Sabres have the 13th-best goals-against average in the NHL this season. They were 26th last season. But a peek under the hood shows the goaltending they got from Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen was the major factor there.

The improvement in the underlying defensive metrics hasn’t been drastic. The Sabres have allowed the seventh-most high-danger chances in the NHL at five-on-five this season. Last season, they allowed the fourth most. Last season, they allowed the 11th-most scoring chances against at five-on-five. This season, they’ve allowed the 14th-most. Last season, the Sabres were 28th on the penalty kill, this season they are 16th. The Sabres are still a below-average defensive team.

On Tuesday night, the Sabres were eliminated from the NHL playoffs for a 13th straight season. Granato has now been the head coach for three of those seasons and was an assistant for two others. That’s five seasons of the drought he’s been part of. Granato inherited a rough situation when he took over as the interim coach in March of 2021. In the rest of that calendar year, the Sabres traded disgruntled veterans Rasmus Ristolainen , Sam Reinhart and Jack Eichel . They committed to building through the draft and developing from within the organization. Granato’s track record with the United States National Team Development Program made him the right man for the job. The individual development of players like Tage Thompson and Rasmus Dahlin , among others, reflected that.

A strategy like this one requires a degree of patience. Of the 30 draft picks Adams has made since 2020, only four have reached full-time NHL status. Zach Benson , Owen Power , JJ Peterka and Jack Quinn all look like potential core pieces for the Sabres’ roster. If the Sabres can get similar results from any of the three first-round picks they had in 2022, there is hope the patient approach can yield results. They have a promising young blueline led by Rasmus Dahlin, Bowen Byram , Power and Mattias Samuelsson . Thompson, Alex Tuch and Dylan Cozens all regressed statistically this season, but they showed their potential last season.

Putting the future and potential aside, though, the Sabres’ stated goal at the outset of this season was winning. And this team came up short in a season in which the Eastern Conference wild-card race was wide open. Even if you believe the NHL changes coaches too frequently, three full seasons should be plenty of time to determine whether Granato can get this team to the next level. For the first time since the Sabres removed the interim tag and made him the permanent coach, Granato’s future is uncertain.

“When I was here as the interim coach I took it upon myself to say, ‘I don’t know if I’m going to be the next coach, but coach the right way,'” Granato said. “You’re in these positions and you have to stay very focused on what you do every day … For me, I have to do my job every day. It’s to help this team and to help this franchise get better every day. That’s my focus every day. That’s my drive every day. I don’t know any other way to do things.”

The hockey case to keep Granato has gotten flimsier. Adams could spin it by saying he wants to let Granato see this rebuild through. The team is clearly in a better place than when Granato took over. Maybe internally Adams and company really thought next season was the one they were building toward. That wasn’t the public message that they sent, but signing Granato to an extension with two years left on his original deal might be a hint that owner Pegula was convinced of a longer timeline.

The decisions the Sabres make this offseason, starting with Granato’s future, will be a reflection of Pegula. The Sabres have missed the playoffs in all 13 of his full seasons of ownership. They’ve missed the playoffs more in the last 13 seasons than they did in the 40 seasons prior to Pegula’s ownership. When he bought the team, Pegula said there would be no financial mandates on the Sabres’ hockey department. That changed in 2020 when the pandemic impacted the team’s bottom line. Pegula said he wanted the Sabres to be “effective, efficient and economic.” Pegula did not conduct a general manager search when he fired Jason Botterill and hired Adams. In each of the last four seasons, the Sabres have ranked in the bottom five of the league in payroll. Some of that is because of the aforementioned youth on the roster, but it has raised fair questions about Pegula’s willingness to spend on the Sabres.

So will Pegula pay Granato just under $4 million to not coach the next two seasons on top of paying another coach? We know he’s willing to spend freely on the Buffalo Bills, and this offseason represents his best chance to show a similar financial commitment to the Sabres. He just saved $18.5 million in cash with the Bills’ trade of Stefon Diggs. Maybe he can use some of that to help the hockey team. The arena will get some overdue upgrades this offseason, but the on-ice product needs help, too. Revamping the coaching staff by either replacing Granato or his assistants would be a start. Spending to the cap would be nice, too.

How many other NHL franchises would maintain the status quo in this situation? Pegula is the lone constant in the Sabres’ 13-season playoff drought and he’s the one with the most power to change it.
