Sailing Itineraries from Lavrion

Lavrion is ideally situated at the south eastern tip of Attika, just 3 hours sailing to Kea (Tzia) and the start of your Cycladic adventure! Keep in mind that Istion also has a charter base in Alimos Marina and one way charters are occasionally available starting from Lavrion and ending in Alimos (or vice versa) usually for early and late season charters. They can be a good option for those who want to maximise their sailing time without having to backtrack!

The Cyclades

The Cyclades is a group of Islands lying amidst the amazing Aegean Sea . They are world famous for the beauty of the rough rocky landscape merging with the crystal-clear seas , the traditional white-washed houses and windmills, and the endless possibilities they offer for exploring and sightseeing . Needless to say, some of the islands are well-known, to put it mildly, for their nightlife (Mykonos anyone?).

Cruising in this archipelago definitely requires skilled and experienced sailors as the winds, especially in July and August, can easily reach Force 6-7 N-NW, with the norm being Force 4-5 N-NW. These are the annual winds known in Greece as the Meltemi . If you need a helping hand, our experienced skippers are available to take care of the sailing and show you the best hidden spots . With over 200 islands and islets, the Cyclades are a gem waiting to be discovered !

  • Veröffentlicht: 05.Sep 2022

If you are thinking about a sailing holiday in Greece, you can hardly miss the harbour town of Lavrion. Due to its location, Lavrion is a popular destination for sailors. Many yacht charters have also settled here. And also for INFINITY.YACHT.S, one of the leading yacht charter offers, Lavrion is the home base. More precisely: the Olympic Marine. Here you can read everything you need to know about yacht charter in Lavrion!

Location and history of Lavrion

Lavrion is a municipality in Attica, one of the most populous regions of Greece. Lavrion is located between the ancient sites of Thorikos and Sounion, right on the coast of the Aegean Sea. In ancient times there were silver mines here, which contributed significantly to the wealth of the city of Athens.

Lavrion: Popular destination for sailors

The Greek harbour town of Lavrion is a sought-after destination for sailors thanks to its excellent location. There are hardly any better starting points for sailing trips to the Cyclades or the Peloponnese. Lavrion also scores with its connection to the International Airport Eleftherios Venizelos in Athens (ATH), which is only about 38 km away and can easily be reached via an motorway.

The Olympic Marine Lavrion: home to numerous yacht charters

The Olympic Marine in Lavrion is considered the first privately operated yacht harbour in Greece. No wonder that numerous yacht charters have settled here. We at INFINITY.YACHT.S also have our base at Olympic Marine, the attractive marina in Lavrion.

Yet the Olympic Marine Lavrion is easy to approach, as you can orientate yourself by the large shipyard building and the breakwater. The marina has 680 berths and 700 dry docks for yachts with a water depth of up to 5.5 metres. In 2000, the marina was certified with the “Blue Flag”.

Sailing yacht charter in Lavrion

Sailing trip: From Lavrion to the Cyclades

The INFINITY.YACHT.S team at the base will be happy to give you tips and tricks for choosing the most beautiful sailing trips in Greece. The Cyclades and the Peloponnese are certainly must-see destinations.

The Cyclades are a group of islands in the Aegean Sea and are one of the most popular holiday destinations in Greece. If you want to sail in the Cyclades, you should be prepared for a demanding area. The Meltemi, which blows in the summer, is quite strong with a force of 5 to 6 and more. It usually blows from the north. In spring and autumn, the wind usually blows from the south. Families and less experienced sailors who want to sail in a more relaxed way will find easier conditions west of Athens and Lavrion. Recommended are trips to the Saronic and Argolic gulfs and the coast of the Peloponnese. The Peloponnese is the area that extends furthest into the Mediterranean. It lies on the Gulf of Corinth, the Aegean Sea and the Ionian Sea.

Why should you charter a sailing yacht with us? Quite simple:

  • We rely on a modern fleet with the best and newest sailing yachts.
  • We guarantee you plenty of space to feel good and/or party. All our sailing yachts are at least 12 metres long and offer space for up to 10 people.
  • We are Greece experts and know the Greek sailing areas like the back of our hand. On our sailing trips you will discover the most beautiful bays and the hidden corners of the Greek islands.
  • We show you where you can moor to swim in peace or find the best restaurants.
  • With us you are not only our guest, you are our friend! The friendly atmosphere, good conversations, a lot of fun and a highly professional and individual care make the difference.
  • You can plan your sailing trip together with our experienced skippers.
  • Or you can charter your sailing yacht “bareboat”, i.e. without a skipper. Of course, this is also possible!

The area around Lavrion has long been celebrated for its mineral wealth. The Athenians mined the area for silver and out of Lavrion Port naval forces financed by the silver went onto dominate the region. The stone used in the Temple of Poseidon at Sounion were dug from the area too.

Today those interested in minerals flock to Lavrion thanks to the geology and unique crystals that wash up on the sandy beach in storms. There is even a museum devoted to the mineral wealth of the area. Others less educated may wish to visit the giant hole in the ground that is 61 metres deep and has no explanation for its existence.

Explore Lavrion By Renting A Yacht

Thanks to its location on the Aegean Sea, a Lavrion yacht charter could be in a number of different directions, whether Greek island hopping or exploring the coast. Less than an hour by ferry away is Kea Island, the closest island of the Cyclades to the mainland. Thanks to Athens Airport being just 45 minutes away from it, Lavrion Marina is very popular for those who wish to island hop to places like Paros, Mykonos, Skiathos, Serifos and Kythnos.

You aren't limited to the Cyclades though, the Saronic Gulf islands are just a few hours away by sea on a perfect yacht holiday. If you want to spend a couple of days in Athens then you could sail down the south coast of the Attika Peninsula to Alimos Marina, and then beyond you can head to Poros, Agistri and Salamina on a circuit of the SaronicIsland archipelago.

South-west of Lavrion and across the gulf is the Peloponnese peninsula which has a quite different sub-culture to those of the Cyclades. Beyond the Peloponnese is the Argolic Gulf and the eastern Ionian Islands - another great coastline steeped in human history and culture.

As sailing holiday destinations go, Laviron is one of those genuine hubs at the centre of the action. If you have an idea where you want to go, on a bareboat charter or on a crewed yacht charter from the start you'll be spoiled for choice.

Suggested Sailing Routes From Lavrion

Introduction and then potential routes to travel on 7 day or 14 days charters

7 days - Saronic Islands and the Peloponnese: Roughly south west of Lavrion are the major Saronic Islands of Poros, Aegina and Agistri. With their laid back and quaint culture they are a major draw in their own right. Beyond and are the Peloponnese peninsula with its nearby islands of Kithra, Doka and Idra. After coast and island hopping, head back across the Gulf to Lavrion.

7 days - Olympic Marina - Southern Cyclades: Kea is just a short hop from Laviron and can be done the evening you board the boat. There are a number of safe marinas and anchorages there so don't worry about being late. Mykonos is one of the best known Greek islands - do visit Little Venice where the sea goes right up to the buildings' walls. Loutra in Kynthos has hot medicinal springs and great coves for sea swimming.

14 days - Laviron to Santorini: The volcanic island of Santorini is one of the most famous sights in Greece short of the Acropolis. Heading out through the southern Cyclades islands including Paros, Mykonos and Aegean jewel of Ios, you will arrive in Santorini before turning west towards Folegandros, Serifos and Kynthos before returning to port.

Best Times To Hire A Yacht In Lavrion

The sailing season runs from late April to October with July and August being the busiest months for yacht charter.

The sea is cooler - often quite chilly - at the beginning of the sailing season but there is rainfall in Spring. As the days lengthen you will still see green fields and flowers in May and the winds can be quite benign too. Combined with the crowds being smaller, this suggests that May to early June are the sweet spot for a Lavrion yacht charter.

Come September and October the seas are still like a warm bath. However there are often water shortages on the islands and everything looks parched.

Sailing Weather In Lavrion

April to mid June: There is rainfall and the temperatures build steadily from the mid-teens to the mid 20 degree C range. There are sometimes gentle southerly winds, though these are replaced by ever stronger N-NW Meltemi winds that are rarely hazardous but make for exciting sailing at times.

Late June-August: You'll be unlucky if you see any rain, though it could be welcome in the summer heat and temperatures are from 30s.

September-October: The seas remain warm and the Meltemi eases. These months can be the best time of year to sail as the temperatures are often in the comfortable low to mid 20s.

Frequently asked questions

The main points to consider are what is your budget, have you got the necessary sailing experience and qualifications to manage the boat if it's not going to have a skipper, whom you are taking sailing, where exactly you wish to go and what will the weather be like on the proposed dates of your trip.

Olympic Marina Lavrion is a major charter yacht hub and gateway to the Cyclades islands. Further down the coast is the larger Alimos Marina that also has several yacht charter companies working into it.

July and August are the hottest and busiest months of the tourist season in Greece. The Meltemi wind is also at its strongest. Why not then choose late May or June to enjoy better sailing with fewer crowds?

You will typically pay 50% up front on booking the yacht hire and the balance on arrival. You will either pay a security deposit with your credit card on departure or can get insurance covering damage in advance. In some cases (such as the recent Covid situation) charter companies may be more flexible but this depends on the individual charter companies themselves.

If you are at sea and in danger, call MAYDAY on VHF Ch16 or ring the coast guard on your phone if you have reception. If you have a mechanical fault and can make it to or are on a mooring you will be able to phone a help line number given by the boat charter company.

You should consider do you have the experience to handle the yacht charter or boat hire before you book and where do you want to go along with what the weather will be like. Bring warm weather and cool weather clothing if it looks like the weather can be cool as well as warm and remember at sea it can be cool on most evenings.

If you want to sail without a skipper then you will need a relevant sailing license qualifications like RYA Day Skipper/International Certificate of Competence (ICC)/ASA 104 Bareboat certificate or the US Sailing Certificate. For small 'day boats' or if you choose to have a skippered on board your yacht charter you typically don't require licences.

Beaches of Lavrion

There are numerous tiny beaches on the way from Lavrion to Sounion, which are really close and accessible without taking a bus or ferry. Beaches are waiting for visitors with beautiful sand and crystal clear water. Many decide to explore nearby ports, beaches, and gulfs by boats. Enjoy the sunset from the board of a yacht!

Asimakis Beach:

This is an excellent, private taverna right next to the sea surrounded by amazing gardens. It lies north from Lavrion along the Hotel Saron. It’s one of the best places for surfers in Greece. Many sailing companies operate in the area. The signs of mining are visible in the town to this day. One of the side effects of mining was the discovery of many different and unique minerals. These minerals attract many collectors to the mountains. You can find very interesting treasures in the Mineralogical Museum. The Archeological Museum shows a unique picture of the development of ancient civilization, which was greatly affected by early industrialization. There are 700 different mineral samples for visitors to view, out of the 115 are very rare.

It’s also ideal for those, who have to wait a few hours for the ferryboat. Don’t forget to visit the temple of Poseidon in Sounion, which is one of the most important temples in Greece. It’s worth to rent a boat, sailboat, or catamaran and explore neighbouring islands. Not far from Lavrion, you can find the former prison island, Makronissos as well. Visit the near Kea island, one of the treasured gems of Greece.

More information about Lavrion

Which period is best to sail in lavrion.

The Greek coast has a Mediterranean climate . The air of the country is very clean and dry from spring to early autumn. There’s a lot of sunshine, while the amount of rain usually decreases from the west to the east. In summer, we almost never see any clouds in the sky. Rain is practically an unknown guest in the summer months. The sea can heat up to 23-25 °C from June to August. Even in October, it’s still 23 °C. The area of Greece is constantly windy, these winds, however, are always changing. The wind that dominates summer months is called Meltemi . From June, it blows from the northwest and the northeast. It reaches its full strength, from 5 to 8 on the Beaufort scale, in July and August. The sea-wind comes in late September or early October, which blows from the southeast and the southwest.

It’s a specifically southern wind, that dominates mostly in spring and fall with a strength of 2 to 4. Due to Greece’s typical winds, it’s most rewarding to plan a sailing route from the south to the north in spring and autumn, and from the north to the south in summer. The waving is preferable compared to the Croatian archipelago since there’s a greater distance between the Greek islands. The current flows counterclockwise in the Eastern Mediterranean Basin, and northward along the Turkish coast. The water flows southward on the Eastern Greek coasts, but from the west side of the Peloponnese Peninsula northern current dominates.

It takes only half an hour to drive from Athens airport Eleftherios Venizelos to our yacht charter base: Lavrion, an ancient silver mining town, has developed into an important port of departure for sailors wishing to visit the Cyclades . The islands are not only famous sites of ancient mythology, but today they impress among other things by their architecture characterized by simple beauty and clear forms. As a sailor you have of course the advantage to discover the beauties beyond the ferry ports frequented by day tourists! Due to the strong Meltemis, this area is more suitable for experienced crews.

Easier conditions for families and less experienced sailors as well as sailors looking for more relaxed sailing can be found more to the west of Athens and Lavrion. Recommended are therefore cruises to the Saronic and Argolic gulfs , which also contain a number of islands, and the coast of the Peloponnese. Also for shorter cruises of one week this area is very suitable. The islands of Poros and Hydra with their eponymous capitals have beautiful old towns to explore. The small island Dokos has hardly any inhabitants and many anchor bays to relax. Excursions inland to ancient sites are also worthwhile.

Moreover, enthusiasts of culinary delicacies will not be disappointed in Lavrion as the level of quality outweighs the price. In Lavrion there are good supply opportunities and here you will find everything you need before starting your yacht charter.

Others less educated may wish to visit the giant hole in the ground that is 61 meters deep and has no explanation for its existence.

You aren't limited to the Cyclades though, the Saronic Gulf islands are just a few hours away by sea on a perfect yacht vacation.

As sailing vacation destinations go, Laviron is one of those genuine hubs at the center of the action. If you have an idea where you want to go, on a bareboat charter or on a crewed yacht charter from the start you'll be spoiled for choice.

Best Times To Rent A Yacht In Lavrion

The main points to consider are what is your budget, have you got the necessary sailing experience and qualifications to manage the boat if it's not going to have a captain, whom you are taking sailing, where exactly you wish to go and what will the weather be like on the proposed dates of your trip.

You will typically pay 50% up front on reservation the yacht rent and the balance on arrival.

You should consider do you have the experience to handle the yacht charter or boat rental before you book and where do you want to go along with what the weather will be like. Bring warm weather and cool weather clothing if it looks like the weather can be cool as well as warm and remember at sea it can be cool on most evenings.

If you want to sail without a captain then you will need a relevant sailing license qualifications like RYA Day Skipper/International Certificate of Competence (ICC)/ASA 104 Bareboat certificate or the US Sailing Certificate. For small 'day boats' or if you choose to have a captained on board your yacht charter you typically don't require licences.

Λαύριον , neugr.
