Haunted Mansion

Well, we’ve been waiting all day, and the ride has finally reopened! Let’s go see what’s changed.

Haunted Mansion Reopens

Many people thought that this short closure was so that Disney could install the iconic Hatbox Ghost that Disney confirmed would be coming to the ride sometime this year .

How to Ride Haunted Mansion

Haunted Mansion has a Standby Line and a Lightning Lane. There is no Single Rider Line .

The Standby Line varies depending on the part of the day, but can be longer in the middle of the day.

Eligible guests can also ride Haunted Mansion during Extended Evening Theme Park Hours .

Do I need to use Genie+ at Haunted Mansion?

If you plan to visit Haunted Mansion in the afternoon when it is usually at its busiest, Genie+ may save you some time.

Although a large chunk of the queue is covered, it is in the open air which can be uncomfortable on hotter days.

Be sure to check out our  touring strategies for Magic Kingdom  for more Genie+ advice.

Rider Switch/Child Swap

As there is no height requirement for Haunted Mansion, this attraction does not offer Rider Switch .

Rider Switch is Disney’s system that allows guests with small children to take turns riding bigger rides, while another person/people wait with the little one.

You can learn more about Rider Switch via our handy guide.

What to Expect When You Ride

As you make your way through the open-air queue you’ll encounter the cemetery, which includes musical crypt, a leaky tomb, a ghostly writer, and more.

dread family busts haunted mansion graveyard queue

You’ll first spot the busts of the Dreads, which aren’t just decoration. There is a murder mystery planted among the busts that you can try to solve.

Also, pay special attention to the tombstones as you wind your way toward the building as they are tributes to the Imagineers that created the ride.

cemetery in haunted mansion's queue at magic kingdom

Keep your eyes peeled for Madame Leota’s headstone. She just might blink at you.

Once inside, you’ll be ushered into the “stretching room” for a spooky pre-show of sorts, then file into another queue before boarding your Doom Buggy.

Ride Vehicles

At the front of the queue you will step onto a moving sidewalk before being directed to board your Doom Buggy, a large, black, covered vehicle that will fit either two adults or two adults and a small child.

Your invisible “ghost host” will lower your safety lap bar for you.

Accessibility Information

Guests must transfer from their wheelchair or ECV. That said, ECVs and wheelchairs can navigate through the Standby Line and Lightning Lane.

After the stretching room, Cast Members will assist you prior to boarding, including helping you out of your ECV or wheelchair.

haunted mansion accessibility info

There is a separate lane next to the far right wall for you to walk to the Doom Buggy loading zone. If needed, Cast Members will stop the moving sidewalk and Doom Buggy to let you get on.

Your wheelchair or ECV will be waiting for you at the exit of the ride. Handheld captioning is available for those who need it.

PhotoPass/On-Ride Photos

PhotoPass is available on Haunted Mansion and you may notice an unfamiliar face in your picture. Each time you ride this attraction, a new ghost will show up in your photo!

You’ll have 2 styles of on-ride photos taken.

The first has “The Haunted Mansion” printed on it and is black and white:

haunted mansion on-ride photopass

The second has a surprise hitchhiking ghost attached and is in color:

haunted mansion on-ride photopass

Your photo is taken at the end of the very first hallway. The flash goes off right at the Medusa portrait.

For those with MagicBands with a linked Memory Maker account or if you are an Annual Passholder, the photo is uploaded automatically to your My Disney Experience account. The photos will be available in the app for 45 days unless you choose to purchase them.

Guests purchasing Genie+ will receive digital downloads of their on-ride photos taken in the park on the day of their purchase, at no additional charge.

Be sure to read  more on PhotoPass  and  how Memory Maker works .

On the Ride

If you prefer to preserve the mystery behind the Haunted Mansion, you may want to skip this part to avoid any spoilers.

At Haunted Mansion you’ll receive a private tour of this eerie estate from your “Ghost Host,” a deep, disembodied voice that regales you about life, or rather after-life, at this original Magic Kingdom attraction.

haunted mansion stretching room

Before boarding your Doom Buggy, you’ll be ushered into the stretching room where you’ll be introduced to the mansion and your host.

Tip: the door to the next room opens underneath the stretching portrait of tightrope walker Sally Slater.

Then you’ll be transported throughout this home to 999 “Happy Haunts” – but there is always room from one more!

haunted mansion ballroom scene

Throughout your tour you’ll meet this cast of characters including the famous Madame Leota as she conducts a chilling séance, the ballroom filled with dancing ghosts, and Constance Hatchaway, the black widow bride.

And, new in 2023, the ride now includes the Hatbox Ghost, too. You’ll find him in the endless hallway segment of the ride.

hatbox ghost

The attraction concludes with a swing through the family graveyard which is brimming with singing specters.

But beware of hitchhiking ghosts! You may end up going home with one of these phantom pranksters named Phineas (holding the carpetbag), Ezra (the tall skeleton), or Gus (the prisoner).

Is Haunted Mansion Kid-Friendly?

The Haunted Mansion ride takes place in the dark with haunting audio and contains some mildly frightening scenes, including images of skulls and ghosts that may be a bit scary for little ones.

The stretching room is often one of the scariest parts for kids, but you can ask the Cast Members at the entrance to skip it. Otherwise, there is no gore and the ride is slow-moving.

We have a full guide on several other  things that might scare little ones at WDW .

Strollers are not allowed in most queues at Walt Disney World. Instead, you’ll need to leave your stroller in the designated stroller parking area at the entrance to the queue.

When Magic Kingdom opened on October 1, 1971, Haunted Mansion was one of the original attractions in the park.

It was inspired by Disneyland’s Haunted Mansion which had opened just two years earlier and was wildly popular with guests of all ages.

haunted mansion at night in magic kingdom

While Walt Disney had envisioned a haunted house attraction for Disneyland in his original concept for also Disney World, it would not be completed until after his passing.

The attraction was designed by legendary Imagineers Claude Coates and Marc Davis. Rolly Crump and Yale Gracey worked together to create the ghostly illusions and special effects.

The mansion’s famous rollicking song, “Grim Grinning Ghosts,” was written by Xavier “X” Atencio.

While the Disneyland and Disney World Haunted Mansion experiences are similar, they are not identical.

  • There is a Hidden Mickey on the dining room table in the banquet scene.

So What’s the REAL Backstory of Disney World’s Haunted Mansion Residents?

By Brianna LeCompte 2 Comments

Welcome, foolish mortals!

does disney world have the haunted mansion

Haunted Mansion

The Haunted Mansion  is one of Disney World’s most iconic rides. It was an opening day attraction at Magic Kingdom and guests still eagerly (and nervously!) anticipate their tour of this spooky spectacle over 50 years later. But just who are the happy haunts we meet in The Haunted Mansion? Let’s take a look!

(But listen up, Mansion diehards — we hear you! This post is JUST the backstory and plot of the Florida version of the Mansion. Each version worldwide has a different backstory and different interpretations of the characters. We’re focusing on Walt Disney World’s Mansion for now, but may take an in-depth look at the others later!)

Wait, What is The Haunted Mansion?

Here’s a brief introduction for those who haven’t yet visited this eerie estate! The Haunted Mansion takes guests on a tour of the ghostly grounds, and it’s led by your very own Ghost Host. The experience begins before even entering the building, as the queue also nods to some of the mansion’s residents , including the debated owner, Master Gracey (but more on THAT later!).

does disney world have the haunted mansion

Haunted Mansion Graveyard

Once guests enter the ride, a Doom Buggy transports them through the mansion, as they observe the activities of the ghostly residents, including a séance conducted by Madame Leota, a party in the Grand Hall, and a menacing bride in the attic.  Now, let’s learn a little more about how these residents came to earn their places in The Haunted Mansion!

Check out the 60th-anniversary merchandise for The Haunted Mansion!

Master gracey.

As mentioned before,  Master Gracey  is the owner of the mansion. Well…sort of. But not really. In addition to spotting his tombstone in the queue, guests will spot a slowly aging portrait of a man over the fireplace when they first enter the mansion. But is this ACTUALLY Master Gracey?

does disney world have the haunted mansion

The Aging Portrait ©Disney

As it turns out, Disney guests had a hand in creating the “semi-official” canon that Master Gracey owns the mansion and adorns the portrait, but it’s still hotly contended amongst Mansion fans!

Master Gracey’s tombstone was one of the original ones installed in the family plot of The Haunted Mansion. This was a tribute to Imagineer Yale Gracey , who had a large role in creating the attraction. Guests and Cast Members were so sure of Master Gracey’s role as the owner of the estate and subject of the aging portrait, that it became adopted as part of the attraction’s backstory, and most notably was a main plot point in the 2003 film adaptation.

does disney world have the haunted mansion

The Haunted Mansion Queue

In reality? No one knows for sure! The portrait was originally referred to as the Aging Man or the Master of the House . His identity wasn’t originally made known when the attraction debuted. Some guests have even interpreted the portrait to be the Ghost Host, but we’ll get to him next!

Looking for more spooky fun? Check out everything returning to Mickey’s Not-So-Scary Halloween Party!

The “ghost host”.

Okay, now it’s time to bust a myth — the omniscient voice which narrates the attraction (our so-called “Ghost Host”) is NOT Master Gracey! Nope, despite the fact that we first hear his voice during the aging portrait scene in the queue, it’s a totally different person…or should we say, spirit…but we do still get a glimpse of him in portrait form on the ride. The Ghost Host’s portrait hangs in the Corridor of Doors . Does he look familiar??

does disney world have the haunted mansion

The Ghost Host’s Portrait ©Disney

Much of the Ghost Host’s story is shrouded in secrecy. Although we do get a glimpse (albeit a very brief one!) into how he met his end in the stretching room (look up when the lightning flashes!). And his portrait illustrates what might have occurred immediately after this scene for our tour guide.

You can “spot” the Ghost Host in one other location on the attraction — the haunted piano your doom buggy crosses in the attraction! Look down and you’ll see the shadow of the Ghost Host playing the piano cast on the floor!

Check out our favorite weird secrets about Disney World hotels!

Constance hatchaway.

Another character guests encounter is the ghostly bride, Constance Hatchaway, but this Black Widow Bride wasn’t a part of the attraction until 2006!

We meet Constance in the attic, as we pass by portraits of her and her former husbands, who each met a violent and untimely demise. Constance was in search of wealth, which she obtained by marrying rich men and then murdering them following their wedding day. That’s why each time we see her in the attic following another marriage portrait, she’s wearing an additional strand of pearls around her neck .

does disney world have the haunted mansion

Spectral Bride in the Haunted Mansion Segment

And it looks like Constance never got caught. How do we know? Well, it turns out we’ve seen her depicted before — Constance is one of the people depicted in the stretching room portraits, sitting on top of her most recently deceased husband’s tombstone.

Constance’s Portrait in the Stretching Room ©Disney

Prior to 2006, you might recall still seeing a bride — a much spookier one — in the attic. Known unofficially as the Beating Heart Bride , the predecessor to Constance was a much more low-tech bride holding a candle, featuring a loud beating heart sound, no discernible face (short of glowing eyes!), and a glowing red heart in her chest.

This Bride went through a few iterations in both Disneyland and Disney World before ultimately being replaced in 2006 by now well-known Constance! This version of the bride intentionally was never given an official backstory, so her story could be interpreted as both tragic or malicious depending on the guest!

A fun addition with the 2006 graveyard makeover came in the form of Constance’s wedding ring . As you walk the queue (near Master Gracey’s grave by the Captain Culpepper Clyne tomb) look down in the corner. You might spot a wedding ring embedded in the pavement.

Look Down and to the Right of This Tomb to Find the Ring

This was added as a nod to guests asking if the original Beating Heart Bride’s wedding ring was in the concrete — it was just a ring of metal from a pole in the ground, but the rumor stuck! When the queue was expanded, the Imagineers added a real ring for fans.

Check out 13 of the CREEPIEST things in Disney Parks!

Madame leota.

There is at least one more well-known character guests become a little more familiar with on the attraction — the mysterious Madame Leota.  We see Leota (well, at least we see her head!) as she’s calling out to the spirits in a séance. And while the ride might leave her story a little vague, we can learn more about her with a trip to the Memento Mori shop .

Clues throughout the shop let us in on Leota’s backstory. She was a witch living in Salem, Massachusetts, until the beginning of the Salem Witch Trials when she fled the state. She relocated to a village in the Hudson River Valley, New York, and opened a shop called “Memento Mori Curios and Curiosities.”

She met the wealthy Gracey family and grew so close to them that she was buried in the Gracey Family Plot upon her death. Guests can spot her watchful — and sometimes OPEN! — eyes on her tombstone right before they enter the mansion!

With Madame Leota-themed merchandise , perfume , and snacks   all sold at various times, this is one mansion resident who’s really made a name for herself!

The Hitchhiking Ghosts

Aren’t these fellas familiar!? If you listen to your Ghost Host near the end of the ride, he may warn you to, “Beware of hitchhiking ghosts!”  He means these guys!

These guys don’t have much of a backstory that is known! What IS known is their unofficial names: Phineas (the traveler), Ezra (the skeleton), and Gus (the prisoner). (And for you diehard mansion fans out there, the Hatbox Ghost is different from these dudes and is ONLY in Disneyland.)

Little Leota

“Hurry back. Hurry back. Be sure to bring your…death certificate.”

Did you notice as you exit the Mansion, a tiny-sized bride speaking to you? Constance again?! Not so much.

This bride is affectionately referred to as “ Little Leota ” or the Ghostess (a combination of ghost and hostess!). She was conceived by Imagineer Marc Davis to help you “make final arrangements” to stay in the Mansion at the end of your tour!

She earned the name Little Leota not for her relation to Madame Leota, but rather because her face and voice come from Imagineer Leota Toombs , who was the face actress (but not the voice actress) for the Leota in the Séance Room. Be sure to bid her farewell before you re-enter the mortal world!

Can YOU get the Muppets Haunted Mansion  merch collection?

It turns out there’s more to these spooky specters than meets the eye. From malevolent brides, to friendly mediums, to invisible tour guides, it’s been a pleasure getting to know a few of the 999 happy haunts that reside in The Haunted Mansion! Maybe next time we’ll get into New Orleans plantations and a fella by the name of Captain Gore over at the Mansion in Disneyland. 😉 And remember, there’s still room for one more — any takers??

ALL the Changes Made to Disney World’s Haunted Mansion After Temporary Closure

does disney world have the haunted mansion

The famous Haunted Mansion attraction in Disney World recently closed for a small refurbishment .

does disney world have the haunted mansion

It was supposed to reopen yesterday, August 10th, but that didn’t quite happen . However, the ride reopened a day later than initially expected, and we’re going to look at some of the changes made .

First, we’re just going to get this out of the way: Hatbox Ghost still hasn’t arrived yet , but he’s still coming soon — we recently got NEW details about where he’ll be located in the ride .

does disney world have the haunted mansion

But some changes HAVE been made. One of the first things you might notice is that the Stretching Room looks a little more vibrant — the light here is a bit brighter. That makes seeing the portraits a little easier as the room “stretches.”

The Haunted Mansion’s refurbishment is over, so let’s take a look at any updates! The stretching room has brighter light to start! pic.twitter.com/MlAnABftVr — AllEars.Net (@AllEarsNet) August 11, 2023

Oh, and the Mummy is back in the graveyard scene . We just know that all the Grim Grinning Ghosts are happy to see his return — see him popping up to say “hello”?

A Cast Member also informed us that the lighting in Madame Leota’s séance room has also been brightened up a bit . As you can see from this photo taken in 2021, the séance room used to be SUPER dark.

Overall, it seems like Disney’s refurbishment efforts were focused on giving the attraction a little update. Perhaps the sprucing up is in preparation for the Hatbox Ghost’s arrival. After all, we want him to feel welcome when he finally materializes!

We’re still watching for the Hatbox Ghost and other changes in Disney World, so be sure to check back with AllEars again soon for more.

The Haunted Mansion

The Haunted Mansion is a fan favorite that no visit to a Disney park is complete without. This popular attraction is a timeless classic that relies heavily on old school special effects and simple visual trickery to create a chilling atmosphere that’s the perfect combination of whimsical and scary. If you love to know the “how’s” and “why’s” behind Disney attractions, keep reading for an inside look at some of the special effects on the Haunted Mansion.

Spoiler alert: If you don’t want to know about the real-world mechanisms behind the other-worldly air of the mansion, don’t read any further.

The spooky scrims

The Endless Hallway

The Endless Hallway features a handy scrim Image: Chris Murray,  Flickr  ( license )

A scrim is a special effects tool that’s used not only in theme parks, but in museum exhibits, stage shows, and any other place where the show requires two interchangeable scenes in the same location. A scrim is a loosely woven piece of cloth that’s painted on one side. When it’s lit from the front, you’ll see the painting on the surface of the scrim. When it’s lit from behind, you see through the cloth to what’s behind.

Scrims are used generously throughout the Haunted Mansion to create chilling special effects. The most obvious scrims are in the Portrait Gallery. These pictures change when the lightning flashes, so you’re seeing the front of the scrim when it’s lit normally, and the ghoulish image behind during flashes of lightning.

The Endless Hallway has another scrim about halfway down the hall. The floating candle you see is located behind a scrim, which helps obscure the mechanism that causes the candle to “float.” The scrim here also creates a cloudiness that makes the mirror at the end of the hall more difficult to discern, so the seemingly endless corridor looks more realistic. Wondering how the mirror works with the candle in front of it? The candle is painted black on the backside so its light doesn’t disturb the mirror’s effect.

The Graveyard has another scrim. Here, the scrim is lightly painted to give the entire graveyard a foggy effect. This is the largest scrim in Walt Disney World. Here, its use is similar to that of the hallway. The lighting doesn’t change to reveal different visions, but the loosely woven fabric allows you to see through it strategically, so you can appreciate the ghosts behind, while painted areas create fog and help obscure other mechanisms that would make the special effects throughout the graveyard noticeably less special.

The ballroom ghosts

The Ballroom

The ghostly Ballroom at the Mansion Image: Brian Rechenmacher,  Flickr  ( license )

Many guests attribute the famous ghosts in the ballroom scene to a high tech special effect, such as a projection. However, long-time Mansion fans know that this scene has been around far longer than many modern video effects. The ghosts that appear and disappear in the ballroom below you are created using a projection technique known as phantasmagoria that dates back to the mid-1800s. John Henry Pepper was the first to perfect the approach, which is often referred to as “Pepper’s Ghost.” Disney’s use of the Pepper’s Ghost effect is the largest in the world, but it’s not unique.

The ghostly figures that you see in the Haunted Mansion ballroom are real animatronics that are just below your doom buggy in a separate room. What you’re seeing from your elevated vantage point isn’t the figures themselves, but rather a reflection of them. There are huge panes of glass set at an angle in the ballroom that are invisible to the viewer, until the figures opposite them are lit. The glass then reflects the ghostly characters, giving the impression of a room full of figures that appear and disappear.

I'm a full time freelance writer and former resident of Orlando, Florida. In the early 2000's I did two stints as a Disney CP, then joined the full-time ranks of Disney Cast Members. During my time at Disney I worked in all four theme parks at least once. Today I enjoy traveling around the country, experiencing and writing about all manner of destinations, both theme parks and beyond.

I may not have ever worked for Disney, but I do know how scrims work. For someone who works (worked?) for Disney, your knowledge is surprisingly WRONG.

At no point in the Haunted Mansion do they use scrims, except in the ceiling of the stretching room. A scrim CANNOT be partially lit. It is either fully invisible or fully opaque. In other words, you can either see everything through it or you can nothing through it. Let's take each of your "points" one at a time. Granted, if part of the scrim is painted, that part will still be able to reflect light when the back of the scrim is lit, but the part that is "see through" can only ever be fully opaque or fully transparent.

The portraits in the hall of portraits use a pigment that reacts to a certain frequency of light. When the lightning flashes it causes that pigment to glow in reaction to the light. This is why you can see the original portrait while also seeing the gruesome image AT THE SAME TIME. If it were a scrim, the lightning would have to come from THE BACK of the canvas, not the front. Plus, the paintings would obscure anything you might see from behind. You can see the lightning flashes on the wall around the portrait which clearly means it is coming from the front. Thus, NO SCRIM.

The endless hallway does not have a scrim because it does not need one. The hallway is long enough to really not even need the mirror. Simply lighting it properly will give the illusion that it is endless just by the fact the guests can't see the end of it. Further, the candelabra does not need a scrim to make it appear to float as fishing line is sufficient to achieve this effect. With a bit of gently wind from a hidden fan the candelabra can appear even spookier as the wind makes it move about on the fishing line, especially if the line is anchored at the top and bottom with just a little slack. As for not ruining the effect in the mirror, if the candelabra is in front of the front mirror (two mirrors are used to achieve the effect of an endless hallway), it will not be reflected by the mirrors. Finally, there is no need to obscure the mirrors with a scrim as the only lighting is coming from the chandeliers and the candelabra. This means that the effect works perfectly without needing to obscure it in any way.

The graveyard scene might use a scrim except for the fact that artificial fog is not difficult. Plus, creating fog is far more effective at making a scene look foggy. Considering the entire room is dimly lit, I very much doubt anyone would see the mechanisms that create the various ghostly effects. Plus, the guests are not stupid enough to think the ghosts are real no matter what you do to hide the various metal bits. If you bother to ride or watch video of someone riding, you will notice that many of the "ghosts" are clearly animatronics as they are not moving in anything remotely resembling a natural manner. Their movements are mechanical and jerky. Also, the graveyard is curved. Trying to put a scrim between the guests and the scene would be difficult at best. It would be necessary to ensure that the scrim does not move or sway in any manner. If the scrim moves, it ruins the effect. Thus it would be MUCH easier for the entire scene to be blanketed in actually albeit artificial fog.

The only place that actually uses a scrim, as I said before, is the ceiling of the stretching room. You didn't even mention that! When the lightning flashes ABOVE the ceiling in the stretching room, the guests can see the corpse hanging from the rafters. They CAN'T see the ceiling any more. THAT is how a scrim works. There is no other place in the entire ride where that effect is seen. Honestly, I'm surprised you didn't try to say that the hitchhiking ghosts that ride for a moment with the guests at the end of the ride are using a scrim.

Haunted Mansion: 10 Differences Between The Disneyland & Disney World Rides

All Disney visitors need to visit the famous Haunted Mansion ride, but is the better version in Disneyland or Disney World?

Two parks, two mysterious mansions, 1998 Happy Haunts, and one dedicated fanbase help make up Disney's Haunted Mansion. The frighteningly fun haunted house ride from the minds of Walt's Imagineers has been a Disney Parks staple since the 60s, but the question on everyone's mind has always been which is the better mansion?

Both are icons of their respected parts, both have their ghosts, ghouls, and gags, but which one is the definitive manor? Sure the original lives in Disneyland, but Disney World's improved the formula. We might not be able to settle the debate, but we'll definitely share what splits them apart. These are the ten differences between the mansions of Disney World and Disneyland.

RELATED: Disney Parks: 10 Haunted Mansion Legends You Didn’t Know Existed

10 The South Out West

The original mansion's design took a lot of influence from the southern plantation houses of New Orleans. After all, the structure is set in New Orleans Square and the South is home to arguably more haunted activity. What better place to have a haunted mansion, right?

From its large windows and wraparound porch and balcony to its southern gothic decor and antebellum facade, Disneyland's Mansion absolutely screams old south. It looks like the setting of one of Poe's tales of the macabre, and certainly appears to be a place ghosts would want to call home. But then again, so does it's Floridian cousin.

9 Colonial Creeps

The mansion in the Walt Disney World resort is located in Liberty Square, an area of the park inspired by the early days of our country. Naturally, a southern plantation house would not fit in amongst the colonial setting, so the design was altered to that of a Dutch Colonial-inspired mansion. In our opinion, it's perhaps the more haunted-looking of the two.

Where the mansion in California resembles an antebellum abode, the one in Florida carries notes of Castle Frankenstein with its stony structure, high towers, and spiked gate. Not only does this mansion look larger than the other, but it also bears a slightly more intimidating and foreboding appearance than the original, especially at night.

RELATED:  Disney Parks: 10 Things You Didn’t Know About The Haunted Mansion

8 Room For a Thousand... Or More

Both Manors play host to 999 Happy Haunts, but with room for a thousand. Though the original makes good on this promise, the one in Walt Disney World arguably has more ghosts than it lets on. But they aren't necessarily inside the mansion.

Due to the larger crowds and size of the park, the mansion has a larger and more interactive queue space, but more on that later. This queue is home to a few ghosts lurking around, including a statue family of murder victims, a spooky storyteller, and a pickled sea captain. Looks like the Florida version wins when it comes to playing numbers.

7 Little Leota's Location

Known to some as the Ghostess, she's more commonly referred to as Little Leota, bearing the same likeness as her sister in the seance room. She's present in both versions of the Haunted Mansion, but in each incarnation of the ride, she appears in different spots. Still, at least someone's there to tell us to  hurry baaaack...

On the original ride, Little Leota bids guests farewell as they depart the ride. This makes her one of the few ghosts guests have an up-close interaction with. But, in the Disney World version, she appears as the Doom Buggies are exiting. Still giving us creeps on the small scale, we thought she was definitely worth a mention.

6 Going Up or Down

Is this haunted room actually stretching? Or is it your imagination? One of the most iconic scenes in the ride is the portrait gallery or "Stretching Room." Here, guests can see the changing portraits of some of the Haunted Mansion's residents before they are sent into the ride. Though most assume this is a trick of an elevator, they're only half right.

Where the original does make use of an elevator to deliver its guest to the ride's official beginning, the Florida version actually has a stretching room. The ceiling rises and stretches the portraits before a hidden door opens to reveal the line for the Doom Buggies. Watch closely on your next visit.

5 A Little Something Extra

Unless you ride both versions one right after the other, you might notice some extra scenes in the Disney World version that the Disneyland version lacks. Though the original is still classic and well-regarded amongst fans, the one in Florida gives us a few additional tricks and treats.

There is an extended changing gallery, a room of neverending staircases, and an improved Hitchhiking Ghosts sequence that the original mansion lacks. Granted, this doesn't mean the Disney World mansion is necessarily better than its Californian counterpart, but we'd be lying if we said we didn't enjoy the additions.

4 Home of the Hatbox Ghost

Though the infamous Hatbox Ghost appears on nearly all the merch for both mansions, the grim grinning ghoul calls the original manor in Disneyland his home. In the Florida version, he only appears as a portrait in the hallway. For the real deal, you gotta go to California.

The Hatbox Ghost made his debut in 1969 but vanished shortly after. He has since made a triumphant return to the mansion, much to the ghoulish delight of fans and staff alike. Though he is keenly wanted in the larger park, we're not entirely sure the attic has enough room for him with all the extra odds and ends previously mentioned.

3 Hitchhiking Hijinx

One of the biggest differences between versions of the Mansion is the way three of its most famous residents. Phineas, Ezra, and Gus are the three Hitchhiking Ghosts that will follow guests out of the mansion when they pass the mirrors. However, the version in Disney World handles it much better than the one in Disneyland.

Disney World's version has received an update in recent years. Now, instead of the simple projections like they do in Disneyland, there is a modern, interactive version installed by Disney Imagineers. Truly and technologically marvelous, Disney World's ghosts take home the gold.

2 Holiday Horrors

Disney World might have better Hitchhiking Ghosts, but Disneyland is Jack Skellington's favorite place to play for the Haunted Mansion's Holiday. Inspired by the classic Tim Burton film, the Haunted Mansion Holiday is what happens when Jack and the residents of Halloween Town come home for Christmas.

During the Halloween and Christmas season, Jack sics his creepie cronies on the entire structure, and the whole thing is saturated in the creepy and kooky holiday cheer only Tim Burton could invent. Jack, Sally, and even that big bad bag of bugs Oogie Boogie are all shacking up at the mansion for some holiday hauntings.

1 Stay a While Longer

The biggest difference between the rides is without a doubt the lengths. Disney World takes the crown, but not by much. Let's look at all the factors the Magic Kingdom's version has going for it. It has a better queue, additional scenes, and a more modernized experience. No wonder Disney wants guests to extend their stay.

Though the Disney World version is longer, that doesn't mean the original doesn't have its perks. Both inspire and practically require multiple ride throughs to properly experience them, and both are equal parts spooky and silly. They are easily worthy of the name Disney Icon.

10 Things You May Not Know About Haunted Mansion at Disney World

The Haunted Mansion

Of all the rides at Disney World, few are more iconic than the Haunted Mansion. It is simply the best haunted house attraction in the world. While this ride should be approached with caution when it comes to young children, rest assured that this is not a horror house. The haunting is combined with some good humor, and most people find it pleasantly entertaining rather than frightening. The fun begins when you step into line and continues out past the exit. With so many different parts of this ride, amazing effects and subtle jokes, there is a lot to love. Every visit brings new discoveries. Here are some things you may not know about this classic attraction.

1 – Spooky Interactive Queue

You may not mind waiting in this attraction’s ride queue because there is so much to see! You’ll discover a musical crypt. Tap any of the embossed musical instruments on the crypt to hear a haunted tune mysteriously play. Check out the tomb of the Sepulcher of the Sea Captain, which leaks water and bubbles rise as the Captain sings a long-lost tune. On the tomb of Posthumous Poetess, words inexplicably appear! Finally, in the Secret Library push in the books that mysteriously pop out at this haunted bookcase. Lots of fun surprises await in this line so you may want to take a long way.

2 – The Tombstones

Of course, don’t miss the tombs to your left just before you enter the Mansion. Be on the lookout for some spooky sights and some laughs as well. The highlight of the graveyard is the Madame Leota tombstone. A tribute to Disney Costumer Leota Toombs (what a great name!) who portrayed the spiritual medium Madame Leota in the séance scene, this headstone might surprise you if you look carefully. Toombs was honored with this unique tombstone in 2001. Interestingly, the names on the other tombstones are those of Disney Imagineers who helped create the Haunted Mansion. Marc Davis (Grandpa Mark), Fred Joerger (Good Old Fred) and Yale Gracey (Master Gracey) are all Imagineers who left their mark on the attraction.

3 – Stretching Room

The ride portion of the Haunted Mansion is preceded by the famous Stretching Room where you are introduced to your Ghost Host. Is this room actually stretching? At Disney World, the answer is actually sort of. In the original Haunted Mansion at Disneyland, the stretching room was born of necessity. The actual ride is housed in a building on the other side of the railroad tracks. The California Stretching Room is actually an elevator that moves guests from the entrance to the lower level below the tracks. In the Disney World version, the ride itself is housed in a hidden building directly behind the facade you see from the queue area well within the Magic Kingdom Railroad tracks. Since there is no need for an elevator (unlike at Disneyland), the ceiling just goes up! But that’s okay because the stretching room is fantastic and it just wouldn’t be right without it.

4 – The Song “Grim Grinning Ghosts”

Can you imagine visiting the Haunted Mansion without hearing the spooky, yet merry theme song, “Grim Grinning Ghosts?” Neither can I. The success of the theme song, “Yo Ho Yo Ho (A Pirate’s Life for Me), at Pirates of the Caribbean, was the driving force behind creating another compelling tune for the Haunted Mansion attraction. Buddy Baker and X. Atencio wrote the song, while voice actor Thurl Ravenscroft sang for the track. Thurl’s quartet, The Mellomen, contributed harmony to “Grim Grinning Ghosts.”  Buddy Baker, X. Antencio and Thurl Ravenscroft have all been named Disney Legends in years past for their contributions to Disney Parks and films.

5 – Home to 999 Happy Haunts

The Haunted Mansion is based on 19th century Hudson River Dutch Gothic architecture. This architecture makes sense since it resides just beyond the burgeoning harbor town of Liberty Square. Since this home was abandoned, it has become home to 999 specters. Though there is room for 1000 if you’d like to volunteer. You’ll be delighted to meet your, Ghost Host, who is your helpful guide through the 15 rooms that are waiting to be explored. Paul Frees, the voice of the Ghost Host, also provided voices for Ludwig Von Drake, Boris Badenov, the Pillsbury Doughboy and many of the Pirates of the Caribbean, including the famous Auctioneer. Madame Leota, the disembodied head inside the crystal ball, is the voice of Eleanor Audley, who also provided the voices of Maleficent in Sleeping Beauty and the Wicked Stepmother in Cinderella.

6 – Dancing Ghosts

A trick that has been around since the early 1800s creates the dancing ghosts in the ballroom scene. The trick, called the Pepper’s Ghost illusion, is where illuminated objects are reflected onto a pane of glass, making them appear translucent. The ghosts are images of real animatronics, which are hidden out of sight just below and above the ride vehicle track.

7 – Singing Busts

“Grim Grinning Ghosts” comes alive in the graveyard scene, where a set of singing busts will “shriek and harmonize.” Each of the busts has a name. They are Rollo Rumkin, Uncle Theodore, Cousin Algernon, Ned Nub, and Phineas P. Pock. The face of singer Thurl Ravenscroft appears on one of the singing busts – Uncle Theodore, which at Disney World is the “broken” bust.

8 – The Haunted Mansion Bride

The Mansions in Disneyland, Disney World, and Tokyo Disneyland all have their own Brides, and she is a central character in the Phantom Manor at Disneyland Paris. The Disney World Bride was recently updated into a more ominous, hatchet-wielding figure named Constance, who speaks grim twists on traditional wedding vows. Portraits of her in the attic show Constance and her ill-fated husbands, whose heads disappear from the portraits before your very eyes.

9 – Hitchhiking Ghosts

One of the most popular scenes in the Haunted Mansion comes at the end when your Doom Buggy gets one of three additional passengers that are sure to follow you home. The original effect was kind of a “Pepper’s Ghost” in reverse since you’re seeing the real animatronic figure sitting next to your reflection in the glass. Recently, the sequence has been upgraded — the ghosts now move around and interact with guests from either inside or atop the Doom Buggies.

10 – Pet Cemetery

On your way out don’t miss the pet cemetery on your left. Look way in the back for a newer addition to the gravestones: Mr. Toad. The Disney World version of Mr. Toad’s Wild Ride was closed and reworked into the Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh, so the repurposed Toad figure is a tribute to a lost ride.

This is such a rich ride experience with so many things to see, you can spot something new every time you ride it. What’s your favorite part of the Haunted Mansion!

Does walt disney world’s haunted mansion have a storyline.

Posted by: Andrew Friedenthal January 6, 2023

does disney world have the haunted mansion

We all know the story of Walt Disney World’s Haunted Mansion . . . or do we?

It’s the most famous haunted house attraction in the world, and the scariest place at any Disney Park, home to 999 happy haunts who practice their terror with ghoulish delight. When you visit you get trapped in a stretching room with no windows or doors, taken aboard a Doom Buggy, and given a tour through creepy hallways, a raucous ballroom, an eerie attic, and a swinging graveyard, all before being told that the residents of the mansion (ranging from Madame Leota to the Hatbox Ghost) are always looking for one more ghost to join their ranks.

But that’s not quite a storyline , though, is it? It’s an experience, to be sure, one featuring many quickly-told stories along the way — a ghoulish figure trapped in a coffin, two duelists whose hatred extends even beyond death, and (told in the most detail) a ghostly bride who did away with each of her husbands. There’s also a clear, established location and a sense of place to it all; arguably, no place on earth has quite the same eerily macabre feel as Disney’s Haunted Mansion (except for any given Tim Burton movie).

However, it’s hard to tell on a first, second, or even hundredth ride-through whether or not there is a clear storyline that we’re meant to be following. Who is the ghostly voice speaking to us? Whose body do we see hanging above the stretching room? What (if anything) does either have to do with the owner of the house, the nigh-mythical Master Gracey, or that one hidden Mickey in the ballroom, or Eddie Murphy? (It’s got nothing to do with Eddie Murphy.) Is there any relation to Mystic Manor or Phantom Manor? (There isn’t.)

Now, as they say, “look alive,” and let’s take a little tour of the storyline – or lack thereof – of Walt Disney World’s Haunted Mansion.

Style Without Storyline

As David Younger explains in his book Theme Park Design & The Art of Themed Entertainment , Walt Disney’s Haunted Mansion was one of two Disney attractions (alongside Pirates of the Caribbean) that embodied the ultimate realization of the “Traditional” design style created by Walt Disney and his first generation of Imagineers. This style, “can be identified by its preference for Immersive Design . . . and Experiential Story, but came about in a time before the theme park was defined as a place of elaborate rides, instead pulling inspiration from many forms of spatial attractions.”

RELATED : How to Spot Different Types of Theme Park Design at the Disney Parks

What this means in practice is that the Haunted Mansion was created to evoke a feeling and a sense of space/place, but not necessarily to tell a specific story. Each scene isn’t necessarily connected to the ones that come before or after it – other than through the spatial representation of being inside a haunted house with multiple rooms – and Guests aren’t taking a role in a story but are rather passing through and observing these various scenes.

However, in the years since the Haunted Mansion was developed and first opened at the Magic Kingdom, the desire for immersive storytelling on the part of theme park fans has grown, which means that there have been several after-the-fact attempts to bring a cohesive storyline to the attraction even if none was originally intended. Only one of these, though, is considered the “official” story by Walt Disney Imagineering.

The Storyline Emerges

It wasn’t until late in the design process that the Haunted Mansion’s show writer, X. Atencio, was brought on board. According to Disney Imagineer Jason Surrell in his Disney Editions book The Haunted Mansion: From the Magic Kingdom to the Movies , “Atencio’s main task after joining the team was to take Marc Davis’s humorous characters and vignettes, Claude Coats’s sinister settings, and Rolly Crump and Yale Gracey’s haunting illusions and special effects and combine them in a way that made sense.”

This, of course, was easier said than done. For example, the original idea to have a raven guide Guests through the attraction was dropped in favor of the voice of the disembodied Ghost Host, and, “Almost by default, X. returned to Walt’s original concept of a retirement home in which displaced spirits could spend their afterlives happily haunting any unsuspecting guests who came calling.”

Ultimately, though, Surrell notes that a story did come together:

Though not as intricately constructed as a Shakespearean play, a story exists. In fact, Imagineering legend and Disneyland veteran Tony Baxter believes that, in the end, combining the seemingly divergent work of Marc Davis and Claude Coats inadvertently gave the Haunted Mansion a fairly solid three-act structure. In Act One, which begins slowly and ominously in the Foyer, guests anticipate the appearance of the happy haunts, and experience poltergeist activity and unseen spirits. Madame Leota provides the curtain that separates Act One and Act Two. The medium conjures up the spirits and encourages them to materialize, which they promptly do in the swinging wake in the Grand Hall and the Attic. The descent from the attic window into the Graveyard takes guests into Act Three, in which they are completely surrounded by the ghosts who are enjoying the manic intensity of a graveyard jamboree. Finally, one of three Hitchhiking Ghosts materializes beside guests in their Doom Buggy before the exit. This might be a happy accident, as Imagineers refer to such serendipity, but it works.

And there you have it – the gossamer-thin storyline thread that weaves together the otherwise disparate scenes of Haunted Mansion. See if you can follow along next time you take a ride!

11 Spooky (and Somewhat Disturbing) Secrets of Disney’s Haunted Mansion You Don’t Know

Disney’s iconic Haunted Mansion attraction has attained cult status among park patrons in the years since its opening because it so seamlessly melds together playful humor and scary spooks with painstaking attention to detail.

As many times as I’ve ridden this personal favorite, I still catch glimpses of unknown characters, objects, or story fragments with each repeat experience.

The original Imagineers wove mystery into the fabric of the attraction to begin with, and fan lore turned official canon has only deepened the well of secrets.

Let’s Go Inside The Best Secrets of the Haunted Mansion

Some of these Haunted Mansion secrets are fun bits of spooky trivia or references to characters scrapped during development, and others are a bit more sinister. All of them add to the many layers of this storied attraction and make it one that guests are eager to revisit!

The Dread Family Busts

does disney world have the haunted mansion

Continuing the legacy of busts that appear throughout the Haunted Mansion, the Dread family greets guests with varying expressions of malice, suspicion, disgust, and disdain as they enter the cemetery at Disney World. This 2011 installation presents guests with a murder mystery to unravel by examining the character details and epitaphs on each bust. Wealthy Uncle Jacob ran the family until he was presumably poisoned by one of his greedy relatives. Guests who can solve the mystery might even be able to spot a reference to the storyline inside the ride itself.

A Haunting Presence

does disney world have the haunted mansion

One of the most recognizable characters in the Haunted Mansion, Madam Leota appears as a disembodied head inside a floating crystal ball, speaking incantations to conjure spirits. These invisible haunts acknowledge her summons by levitating musical instruments and other objects around the séance room.

Madam Leota was named for Disney Imagineer Leota Toombs who allowed fellow Imagineers Roly Crump and Yale Gracey to record her likeness and use it to experiment with the projection technology they were developing for the character. They liked her demo reel so much, they decided to use it for the ride.

Eleanor Audley (Maleficent and Lady Tremaine) provided her haunting voice for Madam Leota to replace Toombs’ softer one, but when “Little Leota”—the doll-sized version of Madam Leota on the ledge of the exit crypt at the end of the ride—calls, “Hurry baaaack… Hurry baaaack… be sure to bring your death certificate,” it’s Toombs’ voice guests hear.

Madam Leota has an expanded presence at Magic Kingdom, where her tombstone resides just outside the ride entrance in the family plot. Guests who watch carefully will see the bronze face of Leota on the stone open its startlingly realistic eyes to peer at guests!

During her “corruptible mortal years,” the Disney World version of Leota fled the witch trials in Salem, Massachusetts, and settled in the Hudson River Valley (Liberty Square), where she opened the Memento Mori shop before taking up residence in the mansion. There is a large portrait of her in the shop, and on occasion, guests can hear her knocking from the other side of the portrait. She also makes occasional appearances in the mirror on the wall.

Haunted Mansion Secret: Was Going to Feature Nevermore

Originally, Imagineers planned for a raven tour guide to narrate the attraction as a nod to Edgar Allan Poe, but during development, they realized the little bird was so inconspicuous that it was getting lost amid the various other design elements. They invented the disembodied “Ghost Host” character instead and invited Disney legend Paul Frees to voice the script.

An animatronic raven still appears as a silent character in the Haunted Mansion at Walt Disney World four times: cawing at guests from its funeral wreath perch in the conservatory, as Madam Leota’s companion in the séance room, on a tree outside the attic balcony, and atop the crypt at the end of the ride. When the interactive queue for the Liberty Square version of the attraction at Walt Disney World opened, Imagineers designed a large raven figure to adorn the front of the organ in the queue area, introducing guests to the character before they entered the mansion.

Meet Your Ghost Host of the Haunted Mansion

does disney world have the haunted mansion

“When hinges creak in doorless chambers, and strange and frightening sounds echo through the halls, whenever candlelights flicker where the air is deathly still — that is the time when ghosts are present, practicing their terror with ghoulish delight!”

These are the frequently recited opening lines of the Haunted Mansion’s “Ghost Host,” voiced by Paul Frees in menacing, but familiar tones. This unseen specter reveals his fate to guests during the infamous stretching room sequence, as lightning flashes in the dark to illuminate his corpse dangling from the rafters above.

There has always been a bit of mystery surrounding the Ghost Host character, and even many Disney regulars may not know a discreet full-length portrait of him hangs in the Corridor of Doors. Portrait details have evolved over the years, but the current image depicts a tall, thin man with pale blue skin and longish white hair, wearing a knotted rope around his neck and holding an ax down by his side. Imagineers intended the latter details to clue guests into his identity.

Look for his portrait after you pass the skeletal arm trying to pry the casket lid open in the conservatory, just before your Doom Buggy rotates to face the grandfather clock.

Wedding Presents

does disney world have the haunted mansion

Constance Hatchaway is a more recent moniker for the infamous Bride character, who has been a fixture at the Haunted Mansion in both Disneyland and Walt Disney World since opening day. Guests first encounter her as the subject of a painting in the stretching room, where she appears as a gray-haired woman posing for a seated outdoor portrait, holding a single red rose. When the room “stretches” to reveal the bottom portion of the painting, guests see she is sitting upon the tombstone of her late husband, George, and has plunged a hatchet into his bust.

Later in the attic scene, she manifests among portraits of all five of her late husbands as a homicidal ghost bride brandishing a disappearing ax in her hands. If you look closely at each of the portraits, you’ll see that Constance acquires a new string of pearls with each of her marriages, and her spectral form is wearing all five.

There are family cemetery plots in the queue areas outside the Haunted Mansion at both parks, featuring headstones that pay tribute to many of the artists and Imagineers who worked on the attraction. Here are some of the epitaphs on the stones and the respective Disney legends they honor.

* In memory of our patriarch – dear departed Grandpa Marc. – Marc Davis originally worked in animation on characters like Maleficent and Cruella DeVil. He did all the paintings for the Stretching Room and the portrait hallway and was one of the two primary imagineers for the Haunted Mansion. He wanted the attraction to be silly and light-hearted, and scenes like the ballroom and graveyard reflect his influence.

* At peaceful rest lies brother Claude. Planted here beneath this sod. – Claude Coats was a background artist who worked in the animation department. Disney brought him into the project to work on developing the interior environment of the attraction. He was the other main Imagineer for the ride and argued for the inclusion of the spooky/scary elements.

* Requiescat Francis Xavier. No time off for good behavior. RIP. – X Atencio was originally an artist who first tried his hand at songwriting for Pirates of the Caribbean (for which he also wrote the script), and then he wrote the lyrics for “Grim Grinning Ghosts” as well as the script for the Haunted Mansion.

* Master Gracey laid to rest. No mourning, please, at his request. Farewell. – Famed Imagineer Yale Gracey was one of the “special effects wizards” who worked to develop the illusions for the attraction. Based on the epitaph eulogizing the character named after him, guests began to assume Master Gracey was the proprietor of the Haunted Mansion, and because this theory was so widely accepted, Disney decided to make it canon.

*First lady of the opera, Our haunting Harriet. Searched for a tune, But never could carry it. – Harriet Burns was the first female Imagineer at Disney, and she worked on the initial models for Haunted Mansion, as well as the character finishing.

*Dear Sweet Leota, beloved by all. In regions beyond now, but having a ball. – Leota Toombs (Madam Leota) was an Imagineer who worked on the New York World’s Fair, Great Moments with Mr. Lincoln, and Pirates of the Caribbean.

*Rolo Rumkin. Lived and Died a Friendly Bumpkin. Roland “Rolly” Crump was a concept artist who designed a variety of figures and creations intended to appear in an extension of the Haunted Mansion called “Museum of the Weird.” Although the museum never came to fruition, his designs inspired many of the scenes in today’s attraction, including the eye-conic purple wallpaper.

Be sure to look for another familiar resident among the tombstones in the pet cemetery at the end of the ride. A statue of Mr. Toad, whose “Wild Ride” closed permanently in 1998 to make room for The Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh, stands in this fenced area.

Haunted Windows

Eerie lighting and candlelit windows give off some especially spooky vibes during the nighttime hours at the Haunted Mansion. If you keep a watchful eye, you may also see something even more chilling illuminate the attraction’s exterior. From time to time, the orange glow of an oil lamp slowly creeps past a window, and guests can use their imaginations to guess which of the 999 happy haunts is on the move! This effect appears in the top left window at the front of the Disneyland mansion and is visible in four separate windows at the Magic Kingdom.

Searching For Clues

does disney world have the haunted mansion

It’s well-known that Disney often embeds story details into the concrete on the ground at the parks–Fantasyland, for example, is littered with horseshoe prints and carriage wheel treads. In the Magic Kingdom cemetery queue area, you can find the groundskeeper’s footprints and his dog’s pawprints treading a path toward a doggie door into the mausoleum.

One of the most well-known Haunted Mansion fan legends came from a small scrap of metal left in the cement after the removal of a gate post. Because the shiny circular object looked uncannily like a wedding ring, cast members and guests began to speculate about where it came from, and the story of Constance Hatchaway hurling it from the balcony after murdering one of her husbands became popular fan lore. During a ride refurbishment, the ring was removed, prompting an outcry from guests, so when Imagineers designed the interactive queue, they added a real engagement ring. Be sure to look for it on the ground as you wait to enter the attraction in Walt Disney World.

Composer’s Crypt

does disney world have the haunted mansion

If you look closely at the organ in the interactive queue at Disney World, you’ll see the name Ravenscroft etched above the keys, which is a reference to Thurl Ravenscroft, a voice actor and singer in several Disney films, who is also part of the Haunted Mansion attraction as the lead singing bust in the graveyard scene.

Another little-known secret on the “Composer’s Crypt” is a reference to the organ in the ballroom. The spirits that adorn the pipes in the queue appear to be the same translucent ones that rise from the pipes on the ballroom organ.

The Sea Captain

does disney world have the haunted mansion

Sea Captain Culpepper Clyne, whose name is a nod to the glass reflection technique used to create the dancing ghosts in the ballroom (called Pepper’s Ghost, after the scientist who popularized the illusion), is entombed in the Magic Kingdom cemetery, where he can sometimes be heard singing sea shanties and sneezing sprays of water, or even bubbles, from his crypt. His character is a tribute to a concept Rolly Crump and Yale Gracey envisioned years ago for the Haunted Mansion. They imagined an encounter with a sea captain surrounded by water during which his ghost would fly out of a portrait at guests.

The portrait of “The Mariner” hanging in the loading zone for the ride is another element inspired by the sea captain character – his hat sits on top of Clyne’s tomb, implying the two characters are actually one and the same.

Ashes Have Been Spread in the Haunted Mansion

Perhaps the most disturbing Haunted Mansion secret that goes beyond the details of the attraction is that numerous people over the years have attempted to become the final ghost in the Haunted Mansion.

In the ride, there is a classic line: “We have 999 happy haunts here, but we have room for a thousand….Any volunteers?”

Over the years guests have attempted to bring ashes into Walt Disney World and Disneyland to make the Haunted Mansion their final resting place. The Wall Street Journal has even reported that this is attempted monthly and that there is a special custodial code for when this happens. Disney is very strict on this and will immediately escort guests off the premises for even attempting this.

There are plenty more compelling secrets like these all over the Disney parks, which is one of the many reasons we keep going back. Discovering new and interesting story details in the attractions is all part of the fun!

Should the Haunted Mansion Holiday Overlay be added at Walt Disney World?

haunted mansion holiday

Haunted Mansion Holiday returned to Disneyland Resort on September 2. This spooky holiday overlay is only added to the Haunted Mansion attraction at Disneyland Resort, not Walt Disney World . With how popular it is, should it be added to Disney World’s Haunted Mansion attraction too?

What is Haunted Mansion Holiday?

Haunted Mansion Holiday is a ride overlay that transforms The Haunted Mansion attraction at Disneyland into a Nightmare Before Christmas theme. This change usually happens in early September and the attraction remains with the overlay until early January. The transformation also means that The Haunted Mansion attraction does need to close for refurbishment before and after every Haunted Mansion Holiday.

Why doesn’t Disney World have the overlay?

The only other Disney park with a version of the Haunted Mansion Holiday overlay is Tokyo Disneyland. However, many guests who frequent Walt Disney World would love to see it there!

haunted mansion holiday

Would guests be willing to deal with the refurbishment closures that the overlay requires? Having special unique experiences and attractions at different parks makes each park special, so some guest would probably choose to keep the overlay at the two current parks that already have it. Personally, I would love to see HauntedMansion Holiday come to Walt Disney World!

Should the Haunted Mansion Holiday Overlay be added at Walt Disney World? 1

After 42 Years, Disney World Demolishing Popular Land

in Walt Disney World

Guests walking around World Showcase at EPCOT

There’s a great big beautiful tomorrow at Walt Disney World Resort, and there always has been.

Though Disney World fans are fond of nostalgia and reliving childhood experiences, many attractions, areas, and entertainment offerings have to say goodbye after a while. While iconic attractions like Haunted Mansion, Jungle Cruise, and Space Mountain continue to be mainstays, others like Stitch’s Great Escape!, Maelstrom, and Splash Mountain must say goodbye.

Magic Kingdom Cinderella Castle

This has been especially of note at EPCOT, which is continuing to see an entire facelift.

Twitter account @bioreconstruct recently posted photos of a construction project that now has the full attention of Walt Disney World Resort in EPCOT.

Current work at a project next to the Imagination pavilion. pic.twitter.com/Rga1dpj4TL — bioreconstruct (@bioreconstruct) February 11, 2024

As you can see in the photo, Disney is demolishing the land outside of the Imagination! Pavilion . This is the first major redo of the land since the Imagination! Pavilion opened in 1982. The pavilion currently houses Journey Into Imagination with Figment, ImageWorks: The What-If Labs, Disney & Pixar Short Film Festivals, and the Disney Vacation Club lounge . It’s also a sneaky meet and greet area where you can find Figment, Joy from Inside Out (2015), and characters from Wreck-It Ralph (2012), as well as Mickey Mouse next door in the lobby outside of the Disney & Pixar Short Film Festivals.

While the construction will not affect the current attractions and entertainment offerings in the pavilion, it will be interesting to see what the expansion looks like when it’s completed.

Spaceship Earth in EPCOT

Though there is demolition work happening right now, the expectation is that construction will soon ramp up in this particular area, and it will be a courtyard-type area with topiaries and rest spots.

Just live the pavilion; this area of land will be a part of the World Celebration Neighborhood when it reopens to Disney World guests. World Celebration just opened its centerpiece located behind Spaceship Earth. The area features synching lights and a statue of Walt Disney. Though more construction continues at the Disney World park, it was the last major piece to open in EPCOT with Journey of Water, Inspired by Moana , also opening last year in World Nature.

Expansions coming to Walt Disney World Resort

Magic kingdom.

Of all the Disney World theme parks, the one that fans have their eyes on most currently is Magic Kingdom Park . The popular Disney park, which is known for its iconic attractions and nostalgia, is about to get a lot bigger, particularly in the next few years.

The most forthcoming project is Tiana’s Bayou Adventure, which replaced Splash Mountain. The attraction is set to open later this year, but Disney has not announced an official date at this time. Disney shares that guests will “join Princess Tiana and jazz-loving alligator Louis on their journey through a shimmering bayou as they prepare for a spirited celebration during Mardi Gras season.” The water flume ride will have a height requirement of 40 inches, which is the same as Splash Mountain.

Tiana's Bayou Adventure, which replaced Splash Mountain, at Disney World.

In addition, Country Bear Jamboree just closed down to make way for major updates.

This is just the beginning, though.

After the attraction is built, Disney World has teased major plans to expand Magic Kingdom with a project called “Beyond Big Thunder Mountain.” Though Tiana’s Bayou Adventure may bring a new land, titled New Orleans Square, this new land would bring new attractions and be dedicated to another intellectual property (IP). Disney previously teased multiple IPs– including Encanto, Coco, and Disney Villains– but none of these have been confirmed. We expect to hear more about the project this coming summer at the D23 Expo in Anaheim, CA.

Disney’s Animal Kingdom

It’s almost time for Disney’s Animal Kingdom Theme Park to get a major redo, and we’re inching closer to that day.

First, Disney World has already confirmed that It’s Tough to be a Bug! will be closing down permanently . The entertainment offering, which opened with Disney’s Animal Kingdom back in 1998, will be replaced with a Zootopia -themed attraction. Though the attraction will close down permanently, the Disney calendar does not give an official date and is scheduled to be open through April.

Tree of Life on Discovery Island at Walt Disney World Resort

Of course, the biggest news with Disney’s Animal Kingdom is another Blue Sky teaser from Disney that will replace DinoLand, U.S.A. A portion of DinoLand, U.S.A., has already closed down, and the expectation is that the entire area will shut down to make way for new offerings in the future. Disney recently teased a land that could be split with Encanto and Indiana Jones , but it’s important to note that these are just ideas and not confirmations from the company.

Disney’s Hollywood Studios

At this time, no major expansion plans have been revealed for Disney’s Hollywood Studios. In the past five years, Disney opened three new attractions, including one major land, at Disney’s Hollywood Studios, which include Mickey & Minnie’s Runaway Railway and Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge, which houses Star Wars: Rise of the Resistance and Millennium Falcon: Smugglers Run.

Boy raises Lightsaber in front of the Millennium Falcon

There are rumors that the Star Wars: Galactic Starcruiser could become part of Galaxy’s Edge in some kind of expansion, but nothing has been confirmed about the failed hotel experience at this time.

What area should be expanded at Walt Disney World Resort? Let Inside the Magic know in the comments!
