Chartering in the Exuma, a Destination for Every Season

Charter yacht Sea Axis in the Exumas

You can rent a yacht in the Exumas any month of the year, although many seek out the warm weather in the Exumas during the winter. December, January, and February are peak charter months, especially around Christmas and New Year’s. Yet, late spring and early summer too are also favorite times for an Exuma yacht charter.

The Exumas are blessed with amazing weather and ideal cruising conditions throughout the year. Across all seasons, temperatures remain in the mid-70s to mid-80s, with steady trade winds and mellow seas. Thanks to a moderate tidal range, just 3.5 feet, the waters of the Exumas are calm and typically hover around 80 degrees year-round.

Yacht Charters in the Exumas – Things to Do & See

There are many things to explore, experience, and see while on your luxury boat rental in the Exumas. Here we listed some of our favorites.

Exumas Bahamas crystal clear water

Visit the Swimming Pigs at Big Major

The world-famous swimming pigs that call the beaches of Big Major Cay home are world-famous. Any yacht charter to the Exumas wouldn’t be complete without a swim with these cuddly potbellies.

Snorkel the Thunderball Grotto

These underwater caves located near Staniel Cay were made famous by the James Bond film. Explore the vast cave network on an afternoon snorkel trip. The underwater caves are teeming with Angelfish and many other colorful species.

Swim with Nurse Sharks at Compass Cay

The private island of Compass Cay is home to a population of resident nurse sharks . Visit the cay and take a dip with the sharks. They’ll swim right up next to you, and you can even listen to their squeaks underwater. (Yes, they squeak!)

Visit Exuma Cays Land and Sea Park

This massive natural park is one of the best in the Bahamas, and it’s a must-visit outdoor playground on an Exumas charter. Snorkel, sea kayak, hike, and bike your way through the reefs, uninhabited islands, and trails of the park. The park offers the best snorkeling in all of the Exumas.

Snorkel the Sunken Plane at Norman’s Cay

Located just off the beach in Norman’s Cay, you’ll find a small single-engine plane, perfectly protected under the water. Snorkel, kayak or take a tender cruise to this must-see sight (which is believed to be a smuggling plane).

Feed the Iguanas at Allen’s Cay

The beach-dwelling iguanas of Allen’s Cay are a sight to see. Feed them by hand right at the water’s edge, and be sure to bring your camera!

Relax on Tropic of Cancer Beach

This hidden white-sand beach is located on Little Exuma and it’s hands-down one of the most gorgeous in the region. But another reason to visit: The Tropic of Cancer cuts a line right down the middle of it.

Try a Variety of Water Sports

The Exumas are known for their strikingly aquamarine waters, and on your crewed yacht charter, you’ll want to spend as much time in these inviting waters as possible. Sea kayaking, snorkeling, cliff diving, jet-skiing, and windsurfing are all favorite Exumas pastimes.

Sailing from Nassau to Exuma

The 365 islands of the Exumas extend south for nearly 100 miles, yet, the most northern islands are just a short 3-to 4-hour sail from Nassau Harbour. For many, sailing from Nassau to Exuma is the ultimate luxury adventure.

Nassau to Exuma yacht charters allow guests to see all of the incredible sights throughout the region – from Thunderball Grotto (made famous in James Bond) to the stunning beaches of Shroud Cay. You choose what you’d like to see and do: Plan snorkeling excursions, explore sapphire lagoons on paddleboards, swim, and play in the Exumas’ legendary warm waters. There is so much to do and see. Plus, you’ll be cruising in supreme comfort, with chef-prepared meals and five-star service.

Design a Nassau to Exuma itinerary that lets you see and do it all. We offer a range of options: From 7-day Nassau to Great Exuma charters, to Nassau-to-Nassau trips in the Exumas. A range of luxury yachts are available for hire from Nassau.

Boat Charter from Nassau to Exuma

Most yacht charters in the Exumas start and end in Nassau. Nassau provides easy access to US and European clients with daily international flights. While Nassau is a great destination on its own, you will most likely choose to head straight for the Exumas upon arriving on your boat. It takes 3-4 hours to reach the first islands of the Exuma island chain.

Exumas Yacht Charter

The Exumas Islands are located within the greater Bahamas Island chain  of the Caribbean Sea. An Exumas yacht charter vacation is about natural beauty and untouched isolated ecology. The Islands stretch over 100 miles and are made up of 365 Cays and they remain reasonably untouched by man. They are one of the most pristine yacht charter cruising grounds in the world for luxury yachts, both motor and sailing, and are certainly one of the best in the Caribbean .

The Exumas are the site of the world’s first marine replenishment nursery established in 1958. The Exumas Land and Sea Park is 175 square miles and the host dozens of superb reef sites. The area has outstanding anchorages and even more outstanding dive sites making it a superb choice for a charter vacation.

With a population of just 3,540 people most of the islands within the Exumas chain are actually uninhabited (apart from the sunbathing Iguanas). This stunning chain of islands is surrounded by crystal clear waters, shallow sandy shoals and spectacular reefs teeming with wildlife. A lot of the islands have beautiful white sand beaches. Whilst there are not any bareboats to rent in the Exumas there are a bunch of luxury Crewed Sailing Yachts and Power Yachts available and a crewed charter is a magnificent way of seeing this beautiful and remote destination.

On a luxury yacht charter you can visit the 400ft deep blue hole on the Atlantic side of the chain and see what is said to be one of the only living intertidal Stromatolite reefs in the world, a living fossil dating back three and a half million years. Also, you can see the Grotto on Staniel Cay made famous by the James Bond movies Thunderball and Never Say Never again.

An Exumas yacht charter can be reached by flying into Nassau in the Bahamas. Embarkation is easiest here and you will be at the Northern most Cay of the Exumas just a couple of hours after departing from Nassau. The main administrative centre of the chain is Georgetown on Great Exuma at the southern end of the chain.

The Exumas are best known for their crystal clear waters which are perfect for snorkeling, diving, kayaking and sailing. The area is also well know for Bonefishing and guided trips can be arranged by your personal crew or your CharterWorld Consultant.

Sample 7-night itinerary for the Bahamas

7 Days from Nassau, Bahamas Cruising The Exuma Cays. Itineraries are also available to begin and/or end within the Exumas at Norman's Cay or Staniel Cay.

Meet the yacht in Nassau

After flying into Nassau International Airport catch a taxi to the marina specified in your booking and board the yacht. We suggest the charter promptly for a 30 nautical mile sail across the Yellow Banks into the stunning Exuma waters and islands. Take a turn at the helm, try trimming the sails, or sit back and relax. Arrive at Allen's Cay by sunset and tuck into a calm and secluded anchorage. Visit the beach where wild Bahamian Iguanas scurry out to greet us. Swim and snorkel as dinner is prepared for you to enjoy under the stars.

Norman's Cay, Exumas

Awake to a leisurely breakfast al fresco, and get ready to sail down island to Norman's Cay on the Exuma Sound, fishing along the way. Stop and snorkel or Scuba dive on sites such as 'The Octopus' Garden' or 'Hammerhead Gulch'. Anchor in the deserted northern end of Norman's Cay, where spectacular beaches, lagoons, flats and snorkeling await you. Sailing down Norman's a bit more, we anchor in a charming harbor with a sunken drug plane that makes a colorful and exciting snorkel. Visit "Twinkie Beach" for solitude and fantastic shelling, or dinghy to the Norman's Cay Beach Club Bar and Restaurant for a fun evening ashore with other cruisers.

Sea Park

Enjoy another invigorating sail South toward the Exuma Land and Sea Park. The Park's Headquarters, Warderick Wells, is a former pirate's hideaway, and the anchorage circles a giant sandbar at low tide. This island never ceases to thrill, with its miles of trails, beautiful snorkeling reefs, secluded beaches, and interesting wildlife including birds that eat sugar right out of your hand!

Compass Cay, Exumas

Continue South to visit the ancient Lucayan burial grounds of Rocky Dundas, where several caves and grottos create beautiful snorkeling. Nearby Compass Cay is next for our exploration, with a natural whirlpool, 'Rachel's Bubble Bath' that changes dramatically with the tides. Anchor for the night in nearby Fowl Cay, which has a beautiful coral reef for you to enjoy, as well as a perfect, crescent shaped beach.

Crewed yacht charter Exumas

Begin our journey back North, stopping to visit the Sea Aquarium, a fantastic snorkel spot, along the way. Sailing through the protected, deserted cays in the Park offers incredible views you will never forget! Anchor off Hawksbill Cay and experience the sugar-sand beaches and a special trail across the island with ruins of a Loyalist plantation from the 1700's. The destination at the end of the trail is a spectacular beach where the only footprints will be your own. Enjoy kayaking, swimming, or just relaxing in this paradise.

Shroud Cay

Sail on to nearby Shroud Cay where you can explore the intricate mangrove rivers by dinghy or kayak. Winding through this incredible ecosystem, you will be rewarded by gorgeous beaches and lagoons when you reach the other side. Enjoy a picnic lunch and play in the gentle surf and unique currents which create a natural water park! Sleep soundly in this calm and protected anchorage after enjoying a wonderful sunset and dinner under the stars.

Crewed charter in the Exumas

Enjoy a full day sailing back across the Yellow Banks. We can spend the final night anchored out (weather dependent) or we can return to the dock in the canals of Coral Harbour, across the street from a long, quiet beach. Stroll back into the local nightlife or enjoy your evening onboard the yacht.

Christmas week charter vacation

After a final breakfast, a short 10 minute taxi ride to the airport starts your travel day off easily, and you'll realize that you are already planning a return charter for next year!

Itinerary disclaimer: Some places on this itinerary can be inaccessible due to closure, time constraints with your charter or weather.

10 Day Caribbean Charter Itinerary - The Exumas to The Exumas

Ideal for Summer Season

With a reputation for tranquillity, seclusion, and natural splendor, the Southern Out Islands are an ideal destination for a crewed yacht charter if you're looking for a social distancing vacation as a result of Coronavirus. There’s so much more to this popular part of the Caribbean than the hustle of Nassau and the bustle of the Exumas, so set course for this remote string of islands and experience 10 days of solitude and self-isolation.

Fly privately into the Exumas Distance: 40 nm*

Fly privately into the Exumas

For our American readers looking to stay even closer to home this summer as a result of the Coronavirus , the Bahamas is right on your doorstep, and offers so much to see and do as part of a social distancing yacht charter .

Begin your Bahamas yacht charter vacation in style by arriving by private jet in the Exumas. The collection of islands are well-connected to Nassau and the USA by air, with plenty of private aviation options at your disposal.

You can fly into the main hubs of George Town Airport or Exumas International Airport on Great Exuma, or you could also fly directly to one of the Exumas’ outer islands; Black Point Airport or Staniel Cay Airport are two great options for private flights. From here, it’s simple and straightforward to meet your yacht at one of the marinas to embark on your charter.

Fly privately into the Exumas

Be an Explorer at Conception Island Distance: 15 nm*

Be an Explorer at Conception Island

Your yacht will likely drop anchor at West Bay, in front of the pristine crescent beach. Then launch your tender or kayak to explore the shores and interior rivulets like Christopher Columbus did in 1492.

A protected national park, the untouched nature and remote location of this island mean you’ll have only the wildlife for company. Swim through transparent waters, carefully navigate reefs of endangered staghorn coral, and snorkel amongst the teeming marine life.

For an even deeper sense of seclusion, head further inland by following one of the hiking trails leading to the east side of the island, before heading back through the trees in anticipation of what is sure to be a stunning sunset back on-board.

  • Bahamas Area Guide

Be an Explorer at Conception Island

Dive in at Rum Cay Distance: 70 nm*

Dive in at Rum Cay

One of the best undisclosed locations in the Out Islands, Rum Cay will greet you with its immaculate sands and thrilling waters. Don your diving gear and slip beneath the waves to explore the shipwreck of HMS Conqueror.

A playground for snorkellers, divers and relaxation seekers alike, this blissfully desolate Caribbean nook is as authentically Bahamian as it gets. The waters teem with life and the underwater explorations for divers are sure to satisfy the adventurer in you. There’s even a beach cave with ancient writings on its walls if you’re searching for a taste of this small island’s history.

When you’re ready to slow down the pace, find your peace on the perfect sands with a rum cocktail from a nearby beach bar, before heading back to your crewed yacht charter for dinner and settling in for an overnight cruise.

  • Rum Cay Area Guide

Dive in at Rum Cay

Be at one with nature on Acklins Island Distance: 30 nm*

Be at one with nature on Acklins Island

You’ll arrive early morning at Long Cay, and begin your day in one of the most preserved areas of the Bahamas . After breakfast on deck, take your tender across to Acklins Island and start soaking up the absolute tranquillity of the barely disturbed nature around you.

The almost complete seclusion means you’ll be making your own adventures on this stunningly rustic island. The pristine beaches, majestic cliffs and rich wildlife will give you a sense of privacy, as you lounge in the sun and snorkel in the coral gardens.

Ask your crew to pack you a picnic lunch and enjoy it uninterrupted on the beach. And if you’re a fishing enthusiast, Acklins Island boasts shallow waters and is famous for its bonefish flats, so grab your rods and indulge in a spot of bonefishing while you’re here.

  • Acklins & Crooked Island Area Guide

Drop off the radar in Plana Cays Distance: 25 nm*

Drop off the radar in Plana Cays

The next stop on your itinerary, these two tiny islands offer some of the highest calibre diving you can imagine, in an absolutely secluded setting.

Here you’ll be in one of the most isolated destinations in the Out Islands, with only the Bahamian Hutias for company. This is the only place in the world you’ll find them, so see if you can spot one amongst the vegetation. Take advantage of the unique reef structure by drift diving down the spectacular drop-offs, and navigating the coral forests bursting with colour and life.

There’s also excellent bird watching sites, beach caves, and plantation ruins to explore. If you visit between December – February, you may be lucky enough to spot whales heading north.

Drop off the radar in Plana Cays

Visit one of the most remote regions in the Bahamas; Mayaguana Distance: 70 nm*

Visit one of the most remote regions in the Bahamas; Mayaguana

Reach Mayaguana by mid-morning and drop anchor at the public dock in Abraham’s Bay.

The most easterly islet in the Bahamas Out Islands chain, there is little here in terms of infrastructure but plenty of footprint-free beaches, small fishing villages and inconceivable beauty. The miles of remote shoreline are just waiting to be explored, and the locals will be only too happy to help you navigate your way.

Dive the sea caves, try your hand at crabbing or visit the settlements, completely undisturbed. There is an airport here which offers chartered and scheduled services, giving you the option to round off your vacation and fly home.

  • Mayaguana Area Guide

Bird watch at Little Inagua Distance: 40 nm*

Bird watch at Little Inagua

Prepare your binoculars and grab your cameras for this unique destination. Said to be as natural and undisturbed as when Christopher Columbus discovered it, it doesn’t get more ‘out’ than this Out Island.

An entirely uninhabited National Park brimming with incredible birdlife, Little Inagua is a protected habitat for endangered sea turtles and home to an abundance of bright flamingoes. Their pink feathers contrast beautifully against the white sand and glassy blue waters, while beneath the waves is a vast reef with some of the best visibility snorkelling and diving you’ll find anywhere else.

Pre-approval for visits here is necessary due to its incredible environmental importance, but one thing’s for sure, you’ll likely have this stunning and fascinating island all to yourself.

Jump in to Hogsty Reef Distance: 70 nm*

Jump in to Hogsty Reef

On your journey back towards the Acklins, this unique atoll rises up out of 6000ft deep waters and is not to be missed. A rare highlight on your luxury yacht charter around the Out Islands, very few ever venture out this far.

On your approach you’ll spot 2 shipwrecks on the horizon, entrapped atop the reef. There have been hundreds of shipwrecks here over the years, some of which await your discovery beneath the waves, others which have been lost to the depths.

Drop anchor on the west side of the atoll, between the two cays. Northwest Cay is home to the ruins of an old lighthouse, and the other is a small sand spit with little feature. The real show is under the vibrant blue waves, where the colours and marine life create a new world for you to lose yourself in, before heading back to your yacht to enjoy a sundowner on deck.

Step back in time on Crooked Island Distance: 75 nm*

Step back in time on Crooked Island

Separated from Acklins Island by the Bight of Acklins, this island is steeped in history and intrigue. Many attractions are only accessible by boat, so launch your tender and live out your desert island explorer fantasy for the day.

Once a major trading post, there are plenty of relics left over to hint at history gone by. Seek out limestone caves with meandering passageways, wander abandoned cotton plantations and get lost in the serene allure of the lagoon. Sail between the deserted bays along the shoreline and imagine the wonder of the early explorers.

Although Crooked Island is the main island in the Acklins, it’s still sparsely populated and you’ll feel as though you’re uncovering your very own Bahamian secret. Revelling in the tranquil beauty of this Out Island is the perfect way to spend your last day before, begrudgingly, heading back to civilisation.

Disembark in The Exumas

Disembark in The Exumas

Your final stop on the itinerary will bring you back where you started, but with a renewed sense of peace and calm. It’s a long journey from Crooked Island, so opt for an overnight cruise.

Before disembarking, spend the morning in a quiet anchorage taking the toys out for a spin one final time. Enjoy lunch on deck, before heading home with the cherished memories of 10 days spent in one of the most idyllic and beautiful places on Earth. Exumas Bareboat Charter – Our Best Ever!

Exumas Bahamas bareboat charter review

Hola Melody and all, Jose and Elena here with a short narrative of the Exumas bareboat charter we just returned from this past Saturday, October 30… our sixth ( I think ) yacht charter with you and The Moorings and our first – but certainly not the last – catamaran charter to the Exumas, which our family agreed was the best charter ever !

I’ll start of by saying that if partying is your preference, you’ll find many more destinations in the BVIs than the Exumas. Hell, there are more cool places to hang out on Jost Van Dyke alone than there are in the first 30 miles of the Exumas. No problem, mon… just bring what you need with you and make Painkillers and Mango Madnesses to your heart’s content, because with the Exumas’ beaches, sand bars, sharkies and pigs, you won’t miss the bars at all.

The Exuma islands are stunning beyond words –and since we became GREAT at blending Painkillers all the way down to the nutmeg, we did not miss the Soggy Dollar much. Okay, I lie… we did miss it – but only just a little.

That said, a word of caution here: this is a much more challenging charter environment than the BVIs due to the Bank’s quickly-changing water depths, tidal effects and currents and it’s definitely not one for the faint of heart or an inexperienced sailor. You MUST be adept at navigating skinny water using your charts, depth-sounders and good old-fashioned pilotage, as well as committed to preparing yourself ahead of time for your ‘ next hop ‘ the old-fashioned way: at the chart table, with the excellent  Exumas Guide  chart book provided to familiarize yourself with the waters, cuts and anchorages where you intend to navigate that day and moor for the night.

Just to make a point, the Maintenance Board at Moorings Base Palm Cay Marina showed 24 vessels were undergoing maintenance on the day we arrived and six of the twenty-four catamarans were for groundings. These are not waters for the casual sailor, so if you are one, you would do well to consider hiring a skipper .

We had arranged to sleep aboard the evening before we sailed and much appreciated the much-needed rest after the 3,000 mile red-eye from PDX and the provisioning trip to the Solomon supermarket, which is just a mile from the marina. There’s also a well-stocked liquor store right next to the market where we found the spiced rums needed for the much-anticipated Painkillers and Mango Madnesses … YES!!!

Be prepared for sticker shock on prices on all food items compared to the mainland, too. Having gotten shocked the first charter we made to the Bahamas – the Abacos , the year before Hurricane Dorian- we brought a cooler with all the meats, hams, bacon and cheese we would need for the trip as one of our free checked bags and it was well worth the hassle in terms of both costs and quality. All the frozen stuff was still frozen when we put it away on arrival, too.

On this matter of pricing and costs, on 1 Jan 2022 the new Government of the Bahamas will be reducing the VAT from 12% to 10% which will be a Godsend to the people of the Bahamas and of course, help future charterers as well.

Day 1: Nassau to Highbourne Cay

Saturday morning we started our itinerary and initiated the 34 nautical mile jaunt passing north of Yellow Bank and past Ship Channel Cay to the deep water on the Great Exuma Sound as we wanted to drop some lures for wahoo on the sail down to Highbourne Cay .

The water was flat and calm the whole way with winds at around six knots and not ten minutes passed before we had a wahoo double on our 30lb class gear. Both fish were landed a few minutes later; one was a good 25 to 28lbs, the other smaller. And yes, it was our daughter Gabriela who landed the bigger one!

Highbourne Cay wahoo

We took the filets to Xuma Restaurant at Highbourne Cay where we gifted one fish to the staff and with the other, Chef Corey prepared absolutely amazing sweet and sour tempura-breaded nuggets which we devoured and broiled filets, most of which wound up as fish tacos the following evening aboard.

Day 2: Highbourne to Norman’s Cay

Sunday morning we were off cruising to Norman’s Cay where we snorkeled the wreck of one of Carlos Lehder’s cocaine-smuggling aircraft and then explored the beaches and sand bars on the north side of the cove where the airplane wreck lies.

Should you want to explore this mile-wide cove , do so on the dinghy on a rising tide and plan to get back to the mother ship before you reach half the ebb because the water will get skinny indeed. In fact, we had to get out of the dinghy and walk it along for a good third of a mile as it was not possible to power it across the flats – but the sandbars and beaches were well worth it.

sailboat charter bahamas exuma

We spent the night at anchor in the small bight just south of the plane wreck, which was a bit rolly even though we were in the lee of the fresh southeast breeze.

By the time we came back from the ‘ walking dinghy ’ experience the sun was low on the horizon, so it was just safer to stay there than to seek another anchorage because simply put, you DO NOT want to move ANY boat in low-light sailng conditions in these waters.

Day 3: Norman’s Cay to Shroud Cay

Monday morning we had a short sail to Shroud Cay which fascinated us… it’s a place we will definitely visit again . The island is not really one cay but a small archipelago of small cays with a large, silted-in mangrove swamp and salina in between all of them, and the whole thing is traversed by two channels that cut thru the swamp to connect the east ( Sound ) and west ( Banks ) sides of the islands.

The northernmost channel can be navigated by motorized vessels but is shallow enough in some places that only dinghies and flats-type boats can traverse it – and it is worth doing not once, but several times.

It was simply spectacular… the cleanest water one can imagine over the whitest sand one can possibly ever hope to see … in a mangrove swamp!?

We saw dozens of small turtles ( Carey ) in the channel and were just awed by the incredible, unspoiled beauty of the place… one of many pictures we took below.

Day 4: Shroud Cay to Compass Cay

Next day we were off again to travel from Shroud Cay to Compass Cay to pet some friendly nurse sharks . Many thanks to Trevi at Compass Cay Marina for hosting us for this experience. We were the only cruisers there, had the sharks all to ourselves and were swimming in the water almost an hour with them.

Compass Cay nurse sharks

It was a great way to celebrate my 69th birthday alongside my wife Elena, our two kids Joey and Gabriela and our dear friend Joseph. Our son proved to be the shark whisperer of the bunch us as he definitely was their favorite “ please pet me target “.

Day 5: Compass to Big Major Spot

From Compass Cay we ran down to Big Major Spot for to meet the swimming pig and had a ball. By the time we got there most of the day trip tourists from Staniel Cay had left and we had the piggies all to ourselves . We had bought lots of carrots for this and had the foresight to cut them up into 2 inch pieces so we could feed a lot of pigs – which we played with for more than a hour. We learned a lot about the piggies from their caretakers and left very much appreciating how much they care for and socialize with these animals…

Feeding the pigs at Big Major Spot

And here’s Gaby bottle-feeding a piglet. Kinda hard to tell who is enjoying herself more…Gaby or the piggy.

Feeding the pigs on Pig Beach

After Pig Beach we sailed the two miles to Staniel Cay Marina where we had made plans to stay overnight, but a wind shift to a Force 4 blow from the Southeast made the marina untenable so we moored off just to the east side of Big Major Cay where we were well protected from the southeast swell and waves .

We spent the next day at Staniel getting our mandatory return-to-the-US COVID tests (thank you, Nurse Rolle!) and just running around between Blackpoint Cay, Big Major Cay and Staniel in the dinghy, paddleboard and kayaks.

The mandatory visit to the Thunderball Grotto was a hoot for the kids as they jumped in from the hole above while Elena and I waited for them outside on the dinghy.

Later in the day my son and I took the dinghy to some rocks in about 40 feet of water on the east side of Blackpoint and caught some very nice triggerfish; their fillets made for an exquisite dinner that evening.

Day 6: Staniel Cay to Warderick

We initiated our trip back Thursday morning trolling north outside the Exumas Land and Sea Park into Warderick Wells with no luck on the rods as we had one bite but no hookups.

We arrived at Warderick Wells around 1530, picked up a mooring buoy for the night and immediately greeted by a large barracuda who decided our boat’s shadow was a cool place to hang out for a while.

Soon after we were also visited by several lemon sharks who probably thought we would feed them –not! They were persistent, so most of us showered inside that night…

Lemon sharks at Warderick Wells Exumas

Day 7: Warderick Wells to Long Cay

Friday morning before heading north we made the short hike to the top of Boo Boo Hill to the ‘ we were here ’ pile of cruisers’ memorabilia.

The white limestone cliffs are similar to those you would find in some of the Greek Isles but here, you’ll see the cobalt blue water of the Sound on one side and the emerald green water of the Banks on the other side and you’ll find yourself thinking ‘ I need to sit down and enjoy this for a while ’.

Definitely a place we’ll be back to and hopefully, not once but many times…

The 'we were here pile of cruisers' memorabilia on Boo Boo Hill

Warderick Wells is the home of the Exumas Land and Sea National Park and in visiting the Park’s main house we learned how it was not the government but a group of about 140 volunteers and private citizens who collaborated to construct what is now the park’s main building and headquarters. The Park has ambitious plans for additional staffing and new equipment and will need private donations to achieve their goals, so any help we can provide will be appreciated.

After visiting Boo Boo Hill it was time to continue our sail north, which we did on the lee (Sound) side of the islands as the southeast winds continued unabated. We anchored just north of the small sand spit on the east side of Long Cay for the night and prepare for the early Saturday sail north back to the Moorings Base at Palm Key Marina -and it was a foreboding night indeed with a Force 5 breeze and numerous thunderstorms through the night.

Day 7: Long Cay to Nassau Base

We left Long Cay at first light, running hard at 11 knots into port beam seas to arrive at Palm Cay at 0945, grateful the predicted strong morning thunderstorms did not materialize. All we had was the fresh breeze to deal with which the boat took in stride and the shallows just southwest of Yellow Bank which appear much more intimidating on the charts than they really are as we never saw less than 11 feet on the depth-sounder.

This Bahamas yacht trip was two years in the making , delayed of course by the pandemic, so to say we were pumped for this is an understatement. Even as pumped as we were, nothing could have prepared us for how wonderful this trip turned out to be and how much we appreciate and admire the people of the Bahamas and the rugged majesty of the waters of the Exumas.

A special hug to Sarah, Bernadette and Capt. CJ from the Moorings Base Palm Cay crew and to Melody, Karimah, Joann and Kimberly from the Virgin Island Sailing team who took care of us for the two years it took to make this trip a reality .

Ladies, we’ll be in touch soon for our next one …

With best regards from Beaverton, Oregon and Orlando, Florida

The Terms are subject to change at any time without notice at Broker’s sole discretion. Additionally, any transaction for which you have made payment shall be governed by the form of Terms in effect at the time of such payment notwithstanding any subsequent changes hereto.

If you are obtaining a quote, information, booking travel for and/or securing or procuring a Charter (as that term is defined in Section 1 below) for more than just yourself, all references below to “Charterer” or “you” (and derivations thereof) shall be read to mean you on behalf of yourself and each individual within your group for whom you are obtaining a quote, information, booking travel for and/or securing or procuring Charter.

These Terms shall be read together and construed, to the fullest extent possible, to be in concert with any other agreement by or among Broker and Charterer. To the extent they cannot be so construed, then in the event of any direct conflict between these Terms and any other agreement by or among Broker and Charterer (including but not limited to the agreement executed by Charterer for a Charter Reservation (as that term is defined in Section 1 below), these Terms shall prevail.

  • Prepaid Charter Reservations . Typically, Broker negotiates charter rates in advance with the yacht owner or charter company (“ Charter Provider ”) to obtain cost-effective rates, and facilitate reservations and availability for yacht charters, excursions and travel (the “ Charter ”). Broker also provides services to you by facilitating the booking of reservations for consideration and receives a commission from the Charter Provider (the “ Broker Fee ”). The Broker Fee is included in the pre-negotiated Charter rate provided to you, plus taxes and other fees where applicable. You agree that your payment is for the total amount set forth in the applicable Charter agreement (which Charter Provider may refer to as a Charter Contract, Charter Agreement, Booking Terms & Conditions, Instructions and Terms for Accommodations, as well as other derivations) provided to you by Broker (“ Charter Agreement ”). Upon execution of the Charter Agreement and receipt of the applicable deposit, you will have made a reservation for the Charter that authorizes Broker to facilitate the Charter on your behalf (“Charter Reservation”), including making payment arrangements with the Charter Provider. You further agree that Broker is a third-party beneficiary to the Charter Agreement and shall have the right to enforce such agreement to the extent it deems such enforcement necessary or advisable to protect its rights hereunder or under the Charter Agreement.

Broker retains the Broker Fee as compensation in arranging your Charter Reservation. The Broker Fee varies based on the amount and type of Charter and/or services provided by Broker.  By making a Charter Reservation, you accept and agree to the relevant cancellation and no-show policy of the Charter Provider set forth in the Charter Agreement. Cancellation and no-show policies vary for each Charter. Carefully read the Charter Agreement and additional information provided to you by Broker. It is expressly agreed by Charterer that the Broker Fee is earned at the time the Charter Reservation is made. Late payment, wrong credit card or debit card details, invalid credit or debit cards, or insufficient funds are for your own risk and account, and you will not be entitled to any refund of any prepaid amount unless the Charter Provider expressly agrees otherwise under the Charter Agreement or in some other signed writing.

  • Charter Rules and Restrictions . Additional terms and agreements will apply to your Charter Reservation and any purchase or rental of equipment or other items, supplies, provisions and travel you may select. Please read those additional terms carefully. In particular, if you have purchased airfare, please ensure that you read the full terms and conditions of carriage issued by the supplier. You agree to abide by the terms of purchase imposed by any supplier with whom you elect to deal, including but not limited to payment of all amounts when due and compliance with the supplier’s rules and restrictions regarding availability, charges, fares, and use of products and services.
  • Payment . All payments must be made by personal check, bank/wire transfer, ACH payment and/or with a major credit card unless otherwise expressly stated. The total price for the Charter Reservation will be billed in U.S. Dollars unless otherwise stated. Some banks and credit card companies impose fees for international transactions. If you are making a reservation from outside of the United States on a US credit card, your bank may convert the payment amount to your local currency and charge you a conversion fee. This means the amount listed on your credit or bank card statement may be in your local currency and therefore a different figure than the amount provided by Broker for the Charter Reservation. In addition, a foreign transaction fee may be assessed if the financial institution that issued your credit card is located outside of the United States. Booking international travel may be considered to be an international transaction by the financial institution or card company. The currency exchange rate and foreign transaction fee is determined solely by your financial institution on the day that it processes the transaction. If you have any questions about these fees or the exchange rate applied to your booking, please contact your financial institution. Broker shall not be liable to you for any such service, conversion, or exchange fee.

Broker expressly reserves the right to cancel your Charter Reservation if full payment is not timely received as set forth in the Charter Agreement.

  • Cancellation and Rescheduling . You may cancel or change your Charter Reservation as set forth in the Charter Agreement by and among you, the Charter Provider and/or Broker. Please note that some Charter Providers do not permit changes to or cancellation of reservations after they are made, or after a certain date, as indicated in the Charter Agreement. You agree to abide by the terms of the Charter Agreement with respect to your Charter Reservation. Broker will not be responsible for reimbursing Charterer for any previously tendered deposits or payments by Charterer and disclaims all liability for the failure of a Charter Provider to refund or return any such funds.
  • Credit Card Transactions and Chargebacks . If for any reason, any Charter Provider is unable to provide the Charter, or any part thereof, for which you have contracted, your remedy lies against the Charter Provider, and not against Broker. However, Broker will use reasonable efforts to assist you and Charter Provider in reaching a resolution to a dispute between you and the Charter Provider. In the event that your payment has already been transferred from Broker to Charter Provider or to an escrow account, you agree that you will not seek a chargeback against Broker for such amounts transferred. You further agree to indemnify and hold Broker harmless from and against any liability, loss, damage or expense (including without limitation, reasonable attorneys’ fees) that Broker may incur in connection with chargebacks against Broker or under the Charter Agreement and your performance thereunder. If Broker incurs any costs, including but not limited to attorneys’ fees, to recover any payments charged back by your credit card company or other financial institution, you agree that you will be liable for these costs. If your payment is declined for any reason, you agree to settle any amounts owed to Broker via money order, cashier’s check, personal check or bank/ACH transfer immediately.
  • Broker Responsibility . Broker makes arrangements with the Charter Provider. Broker additionally makes additional arrangements with other suppliers for the various components and other services that comprise your Charter (“Charter Suppliers”). Broker is not an agent of these Charter Providers or the Charter Suppliers (and the Charter Providers and Charter Suppliers are not agents of Broker). Broker expressly disclaims any liability for the actions or omissions of the Charter Provider and the Charter Suppliers. The Charter Providers and the Charter Suppliers reserve the right to refuse service to you at their sole discretion. Broker assumes no liability for the acts of the Charter Provider or the Charter Suppliers in refusing service. Broker is not responsible for schedule changes and does not offer compensation for those changes. Broker is not responsible under any circumstances for any injury or damages you may suffer, in connection with sea, air or ground transportation, hotel accommodations, or other travel or excursion services arranged by Broker.

You understand Broker is not the source or supplier of the Charter or other travel services you requested and acts solely as a broker for the Charter Provider and the Charter Suppliers. You agree that the Charter Provider and Charter Suppliers whose names appear in the information supplied to you are those who are solely responsible for providing the Charter you purchase. You consent to and request the use of the Charter Provider and the Charter Suppliers and agree to not hold Broker responsible should any of them: (i) fail to provide the Charter or travel services you purchased, whether or not such services are listed in the Charter Agreement or otherwise, (ii) fail to comply with any applicable law, or (iii) engage in any negligent act or omission that causes you any sort of injury, damage, delay or inconvenience.

By using Broker’s services, you waive and release any claim against Broker, its affiliated and subsidiary companies, and their respective officers, directors, employees, contractors, and agents, arising out of or in connection with any loss of or damage to property or injury to any person caused by reason of (i) any defect, negligence, or other wrongful act or omission, or any failure of performance of any kind, by any Charter Provider, Charter Suppliers, or any other provider of sea, airline, hotel, ground transportation or any other travel provider connected to or otherwise associated with the Charter, (ii) any claim for inconvenience, loss of enjoyment, mental distress or other similar claim, (iii) any delayed departure, missed connection, substitute accommodation, termination of service or change in fares or rates, and (iv) overbooking, flight or other travel cancellation, lost or misconnected personal property, or any claim arising out of the air transportation portion of your travel, and (v) or any other claim arising out of or otherwise related to the Charter Agreement or services provided by the Charter Provider and the Charter Suppliers.

Excepting only liability that directly arises from the gross negligence or willful misconduct of Broker, you will not hold Broker responsible for any injury, damage or loss you may suffer while on a Charter, whether incurred on the Charter or in connection with any other rental, purchase, excursion or activity, regardless of the relationship of any of the foregoing with the Charter Provider or the Charter Suppliers.

  • Your Responsibility . By booking a Charter with Broker, you agree to defend and indemnify and hold harmless Broker, Charter Provider, Charter Suppliers, and each of their respective officers, directors, employees and agents, from and against any and all claims, causes of action, demands, recoveries, losses, damages, fines, penalties or other costs or expenses of any kind or nature, including but not limited to reasonable legal fees, arising out of or in connection with: (i) your breach of these Terms or the documents referenced herein; (ii) your violation of any law or rights of a third party; or (iii) your use of the Broker website.

You will review your Charter Agreement and travel documents for accuracy upon receipt. You understand that it is your responsibility to review the accuracy of all details in the Charter Reservation provided to you, and that you may contact Broker if you have any questions.

You assume full and complete responsibility for checking and verifying any and all passport, visa, vaccination, or other entry requirements of your destination(s), and all conditions regarding health, safety, security, political stability, and labor or civil unrest at such destination(s).

You understand that Broker recommends purchasing travel insurance to cover certain risks inherent in travel such as supplier bankruptcy and the inability to travel due to a medical or personal emergency.

  • No Warranties . All Charters, products, services, advice and information is provided on an “as is” and “as available” basis without warranties of any kind, either expressed or implied to the fullest extent permitted under the law, including but not limited to, warranties of title or implied warranties of merchantability, satisfactory quality or fitness for a particular purpose. Without limiting the above, no warranty or guarantee is made (i) regarding the acceptance of any reservation request or Charter Reservation; (ii) regarding the availability of Charters, or any other product and/or services through Broker; (iii) that the use of Broker’s website will be error-free; or (iv) regarding the completeness, accuracy, reliability or quality of any information, content, data, service, advice or merchandise provided by Broker or through Broker’s website.

Broker has no special knowledge regarding the Charter Provider’s or Charter Supplier’s financial condition, unsafe conditions, health hazards, weather hazards, or climate extremes at locations to which you may travel during or otherwise in connection with your Charter.

  • Limitation on Liability . In no event shall Broker, Charter Provider, Charter Suppliers, and/or their respective affiliates, or any employees, agents, officers, directors, members or managers of any of the foregoing (“Broker and Charter Releasees”), be liable for any direct, indirect, punitive, incidental, special or consequential damages arising out of, or in any way connected with, your access to, display of or use the Broker’s website, the Charter or services provided to you in connection with the Charter (including, but not limited to, your reliance upon opinions of the Broker), whether based on a theory of negligence, contract, tort, strict liability, consumer protection statutes, or otherwise, and even if Broker and/or any other of the Broker and Charter Releasees have been advised of the possibility of such damages.

If, despite the limitation above, Broker or the Broker and Charter Releasees are found liable for any loss or damage which arises out of or in any way connected with any of the occurrences described above, then Broker, Charter Provider, Charter Supplier and the Broker and Charter Releasees will in no event exceed, in the aggregate, the greater of (a) the Broker Fee, and (b) One-Hundred Dollars (US $100.00).

The foregoing limitation of liability reflects the allocation of risk between the parties. The limitations specified in this section will survive and apply even if any limited remedy specified in these Terms is found to have failed of its essential purpose. The limitations of liability provided in these Terms inure to the benefit of Broker and/or its providers.

The foregoing does not affect any liability which cannot be excluded or limited under applicable law.

  • Limitation on Time to File Claims . ANY CAUSE OF ACTION OR CLAIM YOU MAY HAVE ARISING OUT OF RELATING TO BROKER’S SERVICES OR THE WEBSITE MUST BE COMMENCED WITHIN ONE (1) YEAR AFTER THE CAUSE OF ACTION ACCRUES, OTHERWISE, SUCH CAUSE OF ACTION OR CLAIM IS PERMANENTLY BARRED.
  • Waiver . No waiver by Broker of any term or condition set forth in these Terms shall be deemed a further or continuing waiver of such term or condition or a waiver of any other term or condition, and any failure of the Broker to assert a right or provision under these Terms shall not constitute a waiver of such right or provision.
  • Severability . If any provision of these Terms is held by a court or other tribunal of competent jurisdiction to be invalid, illegal or unenforceable for any reason, such provision shall be eliminated or limited to the minimum extent such that the remaining provisions of the Terms will continue in full force and effect.
  • Governing Law and Mandatory Venue . The laws of the State of Florida govern the rights and obligations of the parties to this Agreement and the interpretation, construction and enforceability thereof. You agree that any action or proceeding initiated by Charterer against Broker shall be brought solely in the federal and state courts of Hillsborough County, Florida, and you submit to the jurisdiction of those courts and waive any objections to the exercise of personal jurisdiction over you by those courts. In the event any action or proceeding is initiated by Charterer in a court outside of Hillsborough County, Florida, Charterer agrees to pay Broker’s costs and reasonable attorneys’ fees associated with defending such action or proceeding and waives any and all defenses to the transfer of said action or proceeding, whether jurisdictional or otherwise, to a federal or state court in Hillsborough County, Florida.

Best Bahamas Cruises

C ruises to the Bahamas are filled with sun, soft sands, and the opportunity to dip your toes in a warm and seductive crystal blue sea. The 700-island archipelago is the kind of oasis you dream of when, in my case at least, you're indoors on a cold and dark day in Cleveland. Exploring the islands is tricky by air, but much easier via ship. Bahamas cruises to take right now include quick jaunts from easy-to-get-to Florida ports as well as one-week and longer cruises that explore more deeply. You can sail there in less than a day from Florida (cruises tend to embark in the early evening and hang out at sea until the next morning ashore), which makes it both an easy escape for a quick getaway or somewhere to linger for even more rest and relaxation.

What to expect on a Bahamas cruise

The main places cruise ships visit in the Bahamas are Nassau, the capital city, and some of the islands and beaches that are affiliated with cruise lines, such as Disney's private family wonderland Castaway Cay, off Great Abaco Island. There are small ships that explore further, including to the southern reaches of the archipelago.

Cruise passengers will find opportunities to hike in national parks, enjoy nearly deserted beaches, and explore many small churches-the Bahamas boasts more churches per capita than anywhere else in the world.

In the Bahamian capital of Nassau on New Providence Island, visitors can get a better understanding of the nation's British colonial and West African slave history as well as of the Junkanoo culture and festivals at wonderful museums. Most day visitors, though, are typically focused on water attractions: heading off on diving or snorkeling excursions, boarding party boats with free-flowing rum punch, experiencing the beaches, swimming pools, and waterslides at the Atlantis Bahamas resort on Paradise Island, or trying to catch the big one on fishing charters.

On small ship itineraries, you may stop at San Salvador Island, where Christopher Columbus may or may not have made his first landing in the New World. (Historians quibble on the exact landing spot.) A white cross memorializes the supposed landing spot. Long Island, which stretches some 80 miles, has both rugged and sandy coasts and the natural attraction of Dean's Blue Hole, one of the deepest sinkholes in the world at 663 feet, a place where divers and snorkelers can mingle with turtles and tarpons. The small island of Bimini is known for its clean beaches and rich marine life-hanging out at beach clubs, seeking quiet escapes in the land, and watching for dolphins and other sea creatures are prime activities.

Other cruise destinations include Eleuthera, with its inviting pink sands and protected park areas. In addition to beaches, the 365-island chain known as the Exumas are famous for swimming pigs (though they also live elsewhere in the Bahamas).

Best Bahamas cruises

Celebrity cruises' "nassau & bimini" itinerary.

  • Best for: Upscale big ship experience
  • To book: 4-nights round-trip from Miami , from $473 per person for a veranda stateroom; from $801 per person for AquaClass; and from $2,245 per person for the Retreat

That said, if you splurge on a suite in the Retreat, you'll have your own sundeck with hot tub, enjoy private lounge access, and dine at the exclusive restaurant Luminae, where signature dishes by Celebrity's culinary ambassador, Daniel Boulud, are featured on the rotating menu-such as creamy carrot and ginger velouté and Moroccan chicken tagine with saffron couscous. Disney Cruise Line's Bahamian Cruise from Fort Lauderdale

  • Best for: Families and Disney fans of all ages
  • To book: 5-night Bahamas cruise from Fort Lauderdale on the 2,700-passenger Disney Magic , from $6,299 for four guests
  • Islands: Castaway Cay, Nassau (New Providence), Eleuthera

Disney Cruise Line has ships in the Bahamas year-round, starting with quick three- and four-night sailings from Florida ports. Ever since it first opened 1998, the highlight of any Disney cruise in the Bahamas has been Castaway Cay, a picture-perfect white-sand island paradise, complete with pirate attractions and Disney character appearances. What has Disney fans all atwitter is the opening in summer 2024 of a second exclusive for Disney Bahamas destination, Lighthouse Point, on the island of Eleuthera. There, Disney promises a celebration of Bahamian culture, including Junkanoo parades, characters from Bahamas folklore, and performances by local artists. An accompanying commitment to conservation at Lighthouse Point includes a solar installation that will provide at least 90 percent of the destination's required electricity (Castaway Cay also has a solar installation). Family-friendly attractions abound but grown-ups can also drop the kids off in a supervised activity program and head to the adults-only beach to sip cocktails while lounging in private cabanas.
