How to Charter a Superyacht

Navigating the world of yacht charters can be tricky; our guide breaks down what you need to know.

By Kim Ayling

nero yacht aerial view

With privacy and flexibility remaining high on UHNW’s vacation checklist, chartering a superyacht is more appealing than ever. Picture, your own boat, a dedicated crew, a fully customizable route and a select group of your nearest and dearest – what could be better? However, the world of private yacht chartering can be as elusive as it is luxurious, making hiring your own boat a tricky process – especially for first-timers.

From the pros and cons of enlisting the help of a broker and choosing the perfect vessel, to understanding when to book and planning your itinerary – not to mention the all-important question of how much it costs to charter a luxury yacht – there are plenty of hurdles before you reach the water. To help you and your guests enjoy a worry-free vacation out on the ocean, we has compiled a comprehensive guide to chartering a superyacht.

[See more: How Much Does it Actually Cost to Charter a Yacht?]

What is a yacht charter?

If you’re new to the world of yacht chartering, even the language can be alienating. A yacht charter is the process of exclusively hiring a yacht for yourself and your guests.

While most charters are for leisure, be it with friends or family, some individuals and companies choose to hire a yacht for business-related reasons, with the undivided service and uncompromised privacy making boats an excellent place to hold meetings and conferences, while simultaneously impressing clients.

The length of a yacht charter depends entirely on your needs; some choose to book for a long weekend or even just a matter of hours if hosting a meeting, whereas others opt for an extended vacation and may charter a yacht for several weeks or even months. Regardless of duration or motive, privately hiring a yacht is always considered a charter.

What is a yacht charter broker?

Using a broker to charter a yacht is at your discretion; however, if it is your first time chartering, using a broker is highly recommended – especially when hiring a larger-than-life superyacht. Yacht brokers will draw on a large network of connections and extensive industry knowledge to help find the best vessel for your unique requirements, as well as the best price.

Once you’ve had an initial consultation, a broker will typically offer a selection of yachts that suit your needs and help you make a final decision. From here, the yacht broker will handle the entire booking process, from securing the initial boat booking to planning each element of your onboard itinerary, including docking points. A reputable yacht charter broker will also be available to contact throughout the duration of your time on board, giving you and your guests complete peace of mind.

Occasionally, first-time charters mistakenly think that booking directly will shave some digits off the total cost, but it actually falls on the yacht owner/charter company to pay the broker fees – not the charterer. In fact, you will often find that a broker will rely on their insider connections to secure the best deal for their clients.

When it comes to choosing a yacht broker you have plenty to choose from, but names like Burgess , Fraser and Northrop & Jonson dominate the superyacht realm. Some people opt for a freelance yacht charter broker, but we’d suggest only heading down this route if you have a pre-existing relationship or they come highly recommended by someone you trust. You should also ensure that any broker you work with is a member of the MYBA Worldwide Yachting Association.

How to choose a yacht

bold explorer yacht by silver yachts

While your yacht broker will do the hard work when it comes to choosing a yacht, calling upon their wide boat knowledge to present a selection of yachts to you, to be able to do this properly they will need a solid understanding of your preferences, requirements and budget.

The key things you should consider when chartering a superyacht are: the number of guests you want to bring on board (remember the legal limit for most yachts is 12 overnight guests, including personal staff); whether or not the yacht needs to be child-friendly, the amount of indoor/outdoor space you’d like on board; where you’d like to travel; and the onboard amenities you’d like – for example, is an indoor swimming pool a priority or does a dancefloor sound more appealing?

The type of yachting vacation you’re seeking is also important when choosing a boat. For intrepid travelers with a taste for adventure, a sturdier explorer yacht such as Silver Yachts’ Bold or Ragnar by Royal Niestern Sand would be more suitable than a classic yacht, designed for luxury and comfort.

However, if it is your first time chartering a superyacht, don’t feel concerned about going in clueless – your yacht broker will be able to guide you through every step of choosing a vessel.

Bareboat vs skippered superyacht charter

When chartering a luxury yacht, you will sometimes be given the choice between a ‘bareboat’ or ‘skippered’ charter – bareboat being a crewless charter and skippered including a full complement of staff. However, you will find that when verging into superyacht territory, all charters are skippered for both your safety and comfort.

Typical crew members will include a captain, engineer, second and third officers, bosun, chef, chief stew, and one or more stewards. Your broker can help explain the roles of each, as well as support with hiring additional crew members.

For example, if you have a taste for adventure, ensure that there is a watersports instructor within the crew. Looking for a more relaxing onboard experience? Ask your broker to look into securing a masseuse for your journey.

When to book a superyacht charter

When to begin booking a yacht charter is an important question. Leading charter company Northrop & Johnson recommends reaching out to a broker no later than 10 months in advance if you want to travel during peak times (July and August in the summer season, Christmas and New Year during winter), and three to six months ahead for quieter periods. However, with popular yachts booking up as much as a year in advance, it’s advisable to reach out to a broker at least 12 months ahead of time if you have specific boat or date requirements.

When booking in advance, remember that local events will heavily impact availability. For example, if you’re planning a European tour, take note of events such as the Cannes Film Festival and the Monaco Grand Prix when both vessels and docking spaces will be in high demand.

How much does it cost to charter a superyacht?

It’s no secret that yacht charters are expensive, with many first-timers unprepared for the hidden costs. It’s generally accepted that the biggest price indicator of a yacht charter is boat size – so if you’re heading into superyacht territory, expect an impressive fee.

However, other factors will impact the cost of chartering a superyacht , such as crew reputation, ship design and the age of the vessel. For example, Fraser Yachts offer a week on the 298.5-ft Moonlight II which was first built in 2005 from €750,000 (approximately $815,000), but prices for the 278-ft Solandge, which was built in 2013 and refitted in 2019, begin at €1m ($1.1m) per week.

Although some charter costs are inclusive, meaning expenses such as captain and crew, fuel, food and drink are included, you’ll find that a ‘plus expenses’ charter is more common. With such charters, only the crew and ship are included in the price, an ‘Advance Provisioning Allowance’ (APA) is used to cover the necessary extras and is usually around 30% of the weekly charter fee. What the APA doesn’t cover, however, is crew gratuity which, although given at your discretion, is very much expected, with the going rate around 15-20%.

To avoid tarnishing your vacation with unexpected fees and charges, ask your broker for a full price breakdown beforehand, including any potential docking fees and additional taxes.

Size Matters – Mega Yacht vs. Superyacht Charter

When it comes to super yacht charter, the first decision often revolves around size. Superyachts and Mega yachts are the giants of the maritime world, but they come with different dimensions and experiences.

Mega Yacht Charter

Mega yachts are massive vessels that exceed 100 meters (328 feet) in length. They boast impressive size and can accommodate numerous guests and crew members. The larger size allows for greater stability, offering a smoother cruising experience even in rough waters. Mega yachts often feature multiple decks, swimming pools, helipads, and even mini-submarines.

Superyacht Charter

Superyachts are slightly smaller, typically ranging from 24 to 100 meters (79 to 328 feet) in length. They offer a more intimate experience compared to mega yachts, making them ideal for smaller groups or families. Superyachts still provide opulent amenities but on a slightly smaller scale, with spacious cabins, lounges, and water toys.

Tradeoff : The choice between mega yachts and superyachts boils down to personal preference and the number of guests. While mega yachts offer unmatched extravagance and space, superyachts provide a cozier atmosphere.

The Price of Luxury

Luxury yacht charters are synonymous with lavishness, but the cost can vary significantly depending on several factors.

Factors Influencing the Price of a Superyacht Charter

  • Yacht Size : Larger yachts typically come with higher charter costs due to increased maintenance and crew requirements.
  • Amenities : Yachts equipped with extravagant amenities like cinema rooms, spas, and gourmet kitchens command a premium price.
  • Destination : Some destinations have higher operational costs, impacting the overall charter price.
  • Season : Chartering during peak seasons in popular cruising regions can be substantially more expensive.
  • Additional Expenses : Fuel, crew gratuities, and provisioning are additional costs that should be factored in.

Tradeoff : Clients must strike a balance between their budget and desired level of luxury. Opting for a slightly smaller yacht or considering offseason charters can help manage costs.

Charting Your Course – Destinations and Itineraries

Selecting the right destination and itinerary is a crucial aspect of super yacht chartering. The world is a vast playground, offering a multitude of experiences.

Popular Superyacht Charter Destinations

  • Mediterranean : The Mediterranean is a perennial favorite, offering a blend of historic ports, picturesque coastlines, and vibrant nightlife.
  • Caribbean : Crystal-clear waters, idyllic islands, and a laid-back atmosphere make the Caribbean a top choice.

  • Steward(ess) : Stewards and stewardesses attend to guests’ needs, ensuring their comfort and enjoyment.
  • Deck Crew : Deckhands and water sports instructors facilitate activities like snorkeling, diving, and watersports.

Tradeoff : Investing in a highly experienced and skilled crew enhances the luxury quotient but can also increase charter costs. Balancing crew quality with budget constraints is a key consideration.

Environmental Consciousness in Chartering

In an era of increasing environmental awareness, chartering a luxury yacht also comes with ethical responsibilities.

Environmental Impact of Luxury Superyacht Charter

  • Fuel Consumption : Large yachts can consume substantial amounts of fuel, contributing to carbon emissions.
  • Marine Conservation : Charterers must be mindful of fragile marine ecosystems and protected areas.
  • Waste Management : Proper disposal of waste at sea is crucial to minimize environmental harm.

Eco-Friendly Charter Options : Some charter companies offer eco-friendly yachts with hybrid propulsion systems, advanced wastewater treatment, and sustainable practices.

Tradeoff : Balancing the desire for opulence with eco-consciousness requires clients to seek out environmentally responsible charter options and make conscientious choices while on board.

The Largest and Most Expensive Yachts

For those with no budget constraints, the world of luxury yacht charter unveils a roster of the largest and most expensive vessels.

Top Mega Yachts and Superyachts for Charter

Booking Your Dream Superyacht Charter

Booking a luxury yacht charter is a meticulous process that involves several steps.

Steps to Booking a Luxury Yacht Charter

  • Define Your Preferences : Determine your budget, group size, destination, and must-have amenities.
  • Research Charter Companies : Investigate reputable charter companies and their fleets.
  • Itinerary Planning : Work with charter brokers to plan your itinerary, considering the desired activities and sights.

So, charter wisely, explore responsibly, and savor every moment of your unforgettable voyage aboard a luxury yacht.

Prices for renting a luxury yacht

The cost of renting a luxury yacht can vary significantly based on a variety of factors, including the size of the yacht, its amenities, the destination, and the time of year. Below are some approximate price ranges for renting the types of yachts mentioned.

Mega Yachts

  • Small to Medium Mega Yachts (100-150 feet): These can range from approximately $50,000 to $200,000 per week.
  • Large Mega Yachts (over 150 feet): Chartering one of the largest mega yachts can cost anywhere from $200,000 to several million dollars per week, depending on the yacht’s size, amenities, and location.

Superyachts

  • Small to Medium Superyachts (80-120 feet): Weekly charter prices for these can start at around $20,000 and go up to $100,000 or more.
  • Larger Superyachts (120-200 feet): Chartering a larger superyacht can range from approximately $100,000 to $500,000 or more per week.

Top Mega Yachts and Superyacht Charter

  • Azzam (largest yacht in the world): Chartering Azzam could cost upwards of $1 million per week.
  • Eclipse (Roman Abramovich’s yacht): Eclipse’s charter rates can be in the range of $2 million to $3 million per week.
  • Rising Sun: Chartering Rising Sun may cost around $4 million to $5 million per week.

It’s important to note that these are rough estimates, and the actual cost of chartering a yacht can vary widely based on specific yacht features, the duration of the charter, additional expenses (such as fuel, crew gratuities, and provisioning), and the chosen destination. Additionally, during peak seasons in popular cruising regions, prices tend to be at their highest.

Charter rates often include the yacht itself, crew salaries, standard amenities, and insurance. However, clients should be prepared for additional expenses, such as fuel, food and beverages, port fees, and crew gratuities, which can add a significant amount to the overall cost.

To get precise pricing for a particular yacht and itinerary, it’s advisable to consult with reputable yacht charter brokers or companies, who can provide detailed quotes tailored to your specific preferences and needs.

How to plan the best superyacht charter experiences for guests

Want to make your superyacht the best charter boat ? Whether you’re an owner hoping to attract a different level of clientele, or crew looking to offer guests something new, Emma Bamford reveals experts' top tips for planning a show-stopping charter experience that will keep guests coming back for more...

Just imagine – what might the perfect charter trip or holiday on board your own yacht entail for you and your guests? Perhaps you’d fly your friends and family to the boat by private jet one day and be perfecting your kitesurfing skills in a secluded turquoise bay with a world champion the next. Or you may be tucking in to a spectacular onboard dinner of vegan “steak” prepared by your Michelin-starred chef before partying in your open-air nightclub with Drake performing on stage. And to top it all, you wouldn’t even have to pack – because your wardrobe would be curated for you and sent ahead, and you could set off with just your passport and phone.

Gone are the simple days of sunbathing on board punctuated by dinners ashore. The past few years have seen brokers, crew and service companies raising the stakes with incredible once-in-a-lifetime opportunities.

“When a client charters a yacht, they expect a good time for both themselves and their guests,” says Bianca Nestor, charter broker at Burgess , who explains time on board as an “investment in well-being” – the inference being that the better time a guest has on board, the better they will feel when they disembark. As such, it behoves a broker and crew to ensure the guests have the best experience they possibly can. “We attribute a lot of our success to diligent planning, paying special attention to the guests’ desires and trying to anticipate their needs,” says Doug Meier, captain of 35-metre Hargrave Renaissance . Nestor agrees: “Exceeding expectations is the name of the game.”

So, if creating the ultimate experience for you and your guests is limited only by your imagination, the question, it seems, is how high will you allow yours to soar?

Arrange amazing Activites

“It’s those money-can’t-buy experiences that set you apart from the rest,” says Martin Armstrong, founder of Somerton Sporting Club, which arranges expert training and experiences in the best locations all over the world with the top athletes in their field. How about learning to climb karst limestone formations with Chris Sharma, developing your kitesurfing moves in Turks and Caicos with two-times world champion Youri Zoon, or increasing your freediving depths in Greenland under the expert guidance of Canadian William Winram, world record holder?

Somerton will put the experts and equipment on board, so guests can leave the yacht with an immense sense of achievement. “Think about how you could improve you and your guests’ surfing skills if we booked Jamie Mitchell to teach you over three weeks at all the secret spots in the Maldives,” adds Armstrong.

Specially curated experiences like these “up the ante of a standard luxury yacht charter and enhance an already amazing holiday”, says Janine St.Denis, marketing and communications manager at Northrop & Johnson . The broker works with Embark Beyond, a luxury travel adviser, to bring in a special events team, to, as St.Denis says, “create one-of-a-kind, once-in-a-lifetime experiences that are often otherwise unavailable or unattainable”. Its ultimate football package, for example, features VIP access to the Super Bowl, meet-and-greets with the players and access to the pre- and post-game parties, as well as a three-night stay at the Ritz-Carlton Fort Lauderdale before a charter in the Bahamas .

Perhaps you want to show your guests parts of the planet that few others have experienced. Travel company Cookson Adventures produces a range of exciting and varied superyacht itineraries. It planned a trip for 55-metre Amels -built Kamalaya to Svalbard, using an icebreaker to clear a path first, and taking naturalist guides on board to explain the habits of local wildlife, including walruses and whales, to guests. Over the next two years it is offering charterers the chance to contribute to a world-class scientific project, Seabed 2030, which aims to map the entire ocean floor by the end of the decade.

The 63-metre expedition yacht SuRi will be available for charter in Tonga, Fiji, the Solomon Islands and Papua New Guinea, carrying a seven-seater U-Boat Worx Cruise Sub 7, allowing guests to dive to depths of 300 metres and experience parts of the world hitherto unseen by human eyes. A multi-beam echosounder mounted on the submersible will record bathymetric data while guests are guided by an experienced sub pilot and a marine biologist in air-conditioned comfort. “This experience demonstrates one of our key beliefs: you have to keep innovating to create unique experiences,” says Cookson Adventures founder Henry Cookson.

Organise exciting entertainment

Your charter guests are off to Cannes and in the mood to party . The Vanity Fair bash is on but they’re not on the list, so what do you do? You need a fixer with all the right contacts who can lift that velvet rope and pull the strings to give your guests the night of their lives. Or perhaps a guest’s child is mad about The Lion King – so why not throw an onboard party with Simba, Timon and Pumbaa? Emmanuel Akintunde, managing director of GF Entertainment, has created a Lion King show that could easily be transferred to a yacht. “Disney doesn’t allow the original cast to perform anywhere other than on stage,” he says. “But we’ve worked with a production partner to produce our own show as close to the original as it can be: costumes, dancing, music... everything.”

With privacy being an important consideration for high-profile guests, many want the ability to bring the fun on board. The 76-metre Oceanco Wheels , available for charter through Fraser , has a nightclub complete with Bose sound system, smoke machines, lasers and two spotlights that send symbols into the skies. “What makes it special,” says Fraser charter broker Debra Blackburn, “is that the equipment is of the standard you would find in a high-end nightclub – plus it’s outdoors.”

And who better to take to the decks than an acclaimed superstar DJ? GF Entertainment booked DJs Martin Garrix and Afrojack so an owner and guests could celebrate Ramadan on a 36-metre, and during the 2019 Abu Dhabi Grand Prix it arranged for Akon to sing on a 38-metre. “We’re also partnering with Drake to do private performances on yachts,” says Akintunde.

Offer gourmet food and drink

Eating on board is an integral part of a charter, and guests increasingly come with dietary requirements, from low-sodium to gluten-free. Burgess’s Bianca Nestor says one of the best lunches she’s ever tasted was prepared by the chef of 90-metre Nero during the Barcelona Boat Show: vegan “steak” frites. “Barbecued beetroot was marinated and turned every three minutes for three hours on a teppanyaki grill to achieve the texture of steak,” she says. “Also on the plate were potato terrine, broccolini and faux foie gras [achieved by combining cashews and miso paste] with truffle oil, served with almond wild garlic horseradish sauce. The chef had begun his preparations for this dish two days in advance. Simply incredible.”

Guests are often as gastronomically savvy as the onboard Michelin-starred chef, and increasingly crew are happy to accommodate their interest. Chef Andrew Reagan (pictured above), who works on Wheels , loves it when guests show an active interest in his cooking. “My ideal guest is someone who loves food,” he says, “someone who will come to the market with me in the morning, pick out ingredients and say ‘Oh look – what can we do with this?’ Then we’d come back and cook lunch and dinner with whatever produce we bought. It’s fun to put a menu together with guests.”

Let’s not forget the drinks. Mark Sager, former mayor of West Vancouver, British Columbia, and owner of 29-metre  Burger   Oriana , asks his crew to go the extra mile to make sundowners special. “At the end of the day we offer our guests a wonderful happy hour with our signature frozen-glass Martinis,” he says.

And when it comes to coffee, things have moved on from a Nespresso machine in the galley: off the beach club, 74-metre CRN Lady Jorgia has a purpose-built espresso bar stocked with barista-standard equipment for a pick-me-up between watersports.

Dedicate time to health and well-being

A beach club was a rare luxury 10 years ago; now a wellness centre and onboard spa are an integral part of any charter.

Guests don’t want to let their fitness regimes slide just because they’re away. Onboard gyms are getting larger, and the treadmill has been elbowed out of the way and replaced with the latest web-linked equipment, such as spin bikes by Technogym and Peloton. One of your party not confident in the water? Your charter yacht is likely to have the solution. “Swimming pools on the main deck with incorporated power jets provide a vigorous workout before breakfast, if you don’t fancy getting salty in the sea,” says Nestor.

Not so long ago it would have been considered a boon to have a member of crew who doubled as a Pilates instructor, but now it’s possible to get the best trainers in the world on your boat. On Somerton’s books is the All Blacks’ fitness coach, who will come on board to deliver a strength and conditioning programme – and everyone in your party is encouraged to drop to the deck and give him 50 (or whatever it is he demands). “These experiences are for the whole family and guests on board, not just one person,” Armstrong adds – so by the time you disembark, you’ll all be in much better shape.

And let’s not neglect the younger guests: the onboard massage/spa room on Wheels has a special menu for teens, including a youth massage therapy treatment designed to suit growing bodies. “Even children and teenagers sometimes need a little downtime,” says Fraser’s Debra Blackburn.

Be sustainable

Owners and guests are increasingly taking a close look at their carbon footprint and seeking practices and products that can help mitigate their environmental impact. Yachting and lifestyle services company Crew à la Mode reports experiencing this increased demand. “We are receiving an ever-increasing number of requests to source eco-friendly and ethical products for yacht owners,” says spokesperson Victoria Emerson. The company’s solutions can be found in every part of a yacht, Emerson says, ranging from “guest stationery and organic cotton bed linens to more natural beauty and cleaning products and staff uniforms crafted using innovative sustainable fabrics.”

Guests can’t help but be impressed by touches that have a lasting impact. GF Entertainment has a gifting scheme of reusable water bottles that reduces the amount of single-use plastic on board, while also giving to charity. Each bottle given away at a party on 88-metre Maltese Falcon at a previous Monaco Yacht Show provided one person in a developing country with clean water for five years.

Have the latest technology

Staying on top of technology should be a priority for every yacht.  Renaissance , for example, has 18 Wi-Fi hotspots and has upgraded from 4G to 5G to stay ahead of the curve. “Guests want their music Bluetoothed to the yacht system so they can control the song selections,” says Captain Doug Meier.

Guests who are enjoying their charter naturally want to tell their friends, family – and everyone else who follows them on Instagram – about it. So helping them achieve that has become a whole-crew priority, from picture-perfect hors d’oeuvres presentation to capturing amazing memories. If a Renaissance guest goes out on a jet ski, crew will take footage, and it’ll already be streaming on the saloon television when they return to the yacht. “Then they can AirDrop it and out it goes to their friends and social media,” Meier adds.

A T-shirt bearing the yacht’s name will no longer cut it when it comes to providing guests with a memento of their trip. Renaissance steps up the level of its gifts, according to how many times the guests have chartered. “Our first-time guests get our custom swag bag, which has clothing, binoculars and a phone charger etc,” says Captain Meier. “But our returning charter guests get a scale model of Renaissance .” They must be doing something right: “So far since our launch, we are seeing a 70 per cent return rate with charter clients,” says owner Christine Emmons, proudly. “Some are on their third and we have one on their fifth!”

Keep the crew happy

“Crew attitude is very important for the best charter experience,” says Captain Meier, who believes guests like to see the same faces year after year, because it makes the yacht feel more like home. “Longevity is important,” he says. “We have several programmes in place such as longevity bonuses, tip matching and special crew events to promote a positive crew morale. On our last trip we took the boat up to the Boca Raton Resort [in Florida] and turned the crew loose on the wave machine for an afternoon of surfing and [then gave them] dinner. They work hard for us, so we wanted to show our appreciation.”

Stock clothing

Imagine being able to turn up at the airport with just your passport, knowing that when you arrive at your boat there will be a whole new wardrobe waiting, with everything in your size, chosen to match the specifics of your itinerary.

Luxury travel and concierge company Voyager Club offers a wardrobe service called My Vacation Stylist, which gauges your needs, likes and dislikes, and curates pieces from brands stocked by Matches Fashion. Everything from socks and swimwear to dresses and jewellery will then be ready in your cabin when you arrive.

Company co-founder Sophie Caulcutt, who has a background in fashion and whose family owns the 38-metre William Fife Mariquita , says: “I couldn’t understand why no one was connecting the dots between fashion and travel, that what you put in your suitcases is related to where you are travelling. Harbour Island in the Bahamas versus St Barths, for example. Having concierge services personalised to you directly on board a yacht adds huge value. The greatest luxury is time.”

The most fabulous yachts to charter this summer

There are an estimated 6,000 superyachts — vessels that are more than 100 feet long — at sea in 2024

As summer reaches its peak across the Northern Hemisphere, it’s hard to imagine a better way of spending a vacation than channeling your inner ship captain and sailing across the ocean.

In recent years, yacht companies have reported a boom in sales — far from the decline that many in the industry feared, due to both the lingering effects of the COVID-19 pandemic and the economic realities of the Russia-Ukraine War.

“I spent my days [in 2020] doing worst-case scenarios and drawing up the budgets to go with them,” Giovanna Vitelli, chairwoman of Azimut|Benetti, the world’s largest yacht manufacturer, told the Economist in 2023.

Instead, her company reported a 23% growth in production value in 2023 —a reality that is not unique to just one yacht manufacturer. The luxury yacht market is expected to grow in value from $7.67 billion in 2023 to $17.33 billion by 2032, according to a recent report from Fortune Business Insights .

Analysts attribute the ships’ rise in popularity to the increasing number of extremely wealthy individuals . Yachts have long been considered a status symbol — a reality that has only increased as wealth becomes concentrated in the hands of a small group of high status individuals .

There are an estimated 6,000 superyachts —vessels that are more than 100 feet long — at sea as of this year. This is nearly quadruple the number of yachts seen in the ocean just three decades ago, according to Bloomberg .

Aside from an increase in popularity, the yacht industry has seen other changes in recent years. Increasingly, those in the market for a luxury ship are turning to alternate means of powering their vessels, as critics point to the excess emissions traditional yachts produce simply for recreational use.

In their 2024 report, Fortune Business Insights highlighted the growing trend of electrification as a significant area of growth in the coming years.

“A tough regulatory environment for traditional yachts and rising fuel prices will pave the way for the solid growth of electric yachts in the future,” the report reads. “Huge investments from various manufacturers and government support measures will accelerate the demand for electric yachts.”

Accommodating 16 guests and 36 crew members, the vessel features a full-size gym, a winter garden and a spa complete with a Himalayan salt sauna. The 378-foot long yacht was first manufactured in 2021 by the German shipyard Lürssen. Excited sailors can charter the Ahpo from superyacht broker Edmiston, beginning at $2,833,376 a week.

This 154-foot-long yacht can accommodate up to 12 travelers in its six cabins, along with up to 10 crew members. Interested travelers can rent the ship for $359,609 a week.

The Renaissance

The Renaissance lives up to its grandiose name by going beyond traditional private yachts and bridging the gap between a personal vehicle and a full-on cruise ship. The 367-foot long ship features five decks and can accommodate 36 guests in 19 cabins. The Renaissance’s amenities include a 19-seat movie theater, a sushi-bar, and a full spa deck featuring a wellness area, plunge pools and a hair salon. How to Charter a Boat

If you want to sail off into the sunset, at least temporarily, you need to understand how to get aboard first.

An illustration of the bow of a boat with three women with flowing hair and cocktails looking over a man playing a guitar and then off in the water, four other vacationers are sunbathing on inner tubes.

By Lauren Sloss

This time of year, it’s an inevitable thought: Life would be that much better out on the water. Specifically, on a boat.

Even if you have neither a boat nor boating experience, it’s never been easier to make your nautical dreams come true — whether you want a day trip on your local lake or a fully staffed multiday voyage in a far-flung locale. Here are the initial questions that will help you plan an adventure on the water.

Whom are you traveling with?

Thinking about the size and dynamic of your group is an important first step, even if you are simply going on a day trip. Will children be on board? How old? What about elderly parents?

Dan Lockyer, the chief commercial officer of Dream Yacht Worldwide , strongly encourages travelers to determine group size — and, ideally, get people committed — before booking.

“The location that you want to go to, the time of year that you want to go, the type of boat that you want will entirely depend on the makeup of the group that you’re sailing with,” Mr. Lockyer said.

Do you want to captain, or do you want a captain?

Different charter companies specialize in certain locations, types of boats, itineraries and services. Some companies offer the opportunity for a “bareboat” charter, in which you rent the boat and take on the navigation and provisioning yourself, while others exclusively offer fully staffed options, including a captain and a cook.

If you want to captain the boat yourself, almost all outfits require some kind of proof of sailing or boating experience, often in line with local regulations.

Edward King, 45, an executive at a streaming company based in San Francisco, is experienced in sailing the city’s waterways. But on vacation, he said he would prefer to let a captain and crew take the lead.

Mr. King said he appreciates a captain who is familiar with both the local waters — “they’ll know how to avoid sailing into a certain sandbar,” he said, — as well as the local attractions.

In contrast, Matt Blake, 38, a software engineer based in Oakland, Calif., was eager to grow his sailing experience during a recent trip to La Paz, Mexico, with his fiancée. He hired a captain but made clear that the captain was there to help and teach.

Where do you want to go?

“Do you want something that’s more culturally oriented? Nature oriented? An adventure trip?” asked Mary Curry, the voyage product director of Adventure Life , which offers small group tours and private trips on land and on water around the world.

That answer can determine your destination. Popular cruising grounds include the Caribbean, Croatia, Alaska and French Polynesia, but the sky — or the sea — is really the limit. For help narrowing your focus, travel advisers often have relationships with charter companies or outfits around the world, and sailing publications offer recommendations.

Kyla Malkani, who has had experience with charters working as a destination wedding planner, recommends consulting the concierge of waterfront hotels, particularly for short-term or day rentals.

“A lot of times they will have either their own fleet or they will have some sort of connection at a dock,” said Ms. Malkani, 37, who is based in Washington, D.C., and is currently working as a content creator and freelance event planner.

What kind of boat?

Where you want to travel and for how long will likely determine the kinds of boats that are available to you. Crucial at this point, too, is an understanding of the boat’s layout and amenities.

“You definitely want to choose the right kind of boat,” said Ms. Malkani. “If you want more adventure, a sailboat is nice. If you’re looking for a luxury party environment, a yacht is best. And if you’re looking for something smooth, for older people or with kids, a catamaran is great.”

David Barclay is a luxury travel adviser who has also chartered boats for his own vacations.

“You want to match what the travelers want to what the boat offers,” he said.

Perhaps a group of friends might not mind a catamaran with functional but not luxurious marine bathrooms, but a multigenerational group might prefer more high-touch amenities.

When should I book?

Often, charter trips are once-in-a-lifetime experiences that require a great deal of advanced planning.

“You may have a specific place you want to go, or a specific time of year you want to travel,” said Mr. Barclay. “And some places just aren’t good at certain times of year.”

Naturally, you don’t want to be at sea in the Caribbean during hurricane season, or in the Mediterranean during winter storms. But you also might want to avoid peak cruising seasons, too.

The first three weeks of August are quite popular, said Mr. Lockyer. “If you have some flexibility and can travel in early July, you’ll get the same sort of great weather, a greater selection of boats and the anchorages won’t be as crowded.”

How much does it cost?

Charter costs are incredibly variable, dependent on all of the factors coming into play: your boat type and size, your destination, your group size, the amount of crew you’d like and the amenities on board. That said, costs could range anywhere from $2,000 for a day on a sailboat to hundreds of thousands of dollars for a multiday mega-yacht charter. Have a budget in mind when beginning your research process.

What if I didn’t plan far in advance?

While advanced planning is encouraged, and often necessary for bigger boat trips, it’s possible to book a boat last-minute.

Boatsetter , an Airbnb-like platform for boats, is a good resource for last-minute bookings, especially for day trips, and even has an Instant Book option for down-to-the-wire bookings.

“If it’s for a special event, or around major holidays, you may want to book a month or two in advance. But for general bookings, you can find options within a week or two,” said Kim Koditek, Boatsetter’s head of brand strategy and communications, of the company’s overnight offerings, which appear on their platform under the luxury yacht charters category .

Ms. Malkani has used Boatsetter for some of her charters, most of which have been booked with a specific goal in mind.

“I’m a sunset chaser,” she said. “My husband and I just really love being on the water, and we always try to squeeze in some sort of boat day activity when we’re traveling.”

My family and I had the pleasure of booking this wonderful trip with Captain Joey and Hannah this past week. From the start of booking they made us feel so comfortable making sure we would get a spectacular experience. It's the attention to the details that impressed me. They kept a watch on the weather and the tides. They also asked about food allergies and made sure that all of our food was reaction free for all of our family members! Once on board we felt at home as if we were part of their family. My teenage girls loved that you could relax and sun bathe in the front of the catamaran or hang out on the shady side. Above all they kept asking for our input and our likes and dislikes. My youngest (15 yrs old) had the time of her life with all the activities they had planned. This trip was a grad gift for our oldest daughter (18 yrs old) and as a mom I planned to get a great Christmas card shot while onboard. I brought along crowns for y girls and I to wear and a tea leaf lei for my husband. Hannah did an exceptional job at capturing our family and the moments that we were having onboard. From the family pictures, to capturing us swimming, playing and hanging out on the board. What blew us away was when Captain Joey let out the sail. That was one of the highlights of our adventure. With Diamond Head as our back drop and the wind pushing us along with the sound of the waves hitting the catamaran. Oh it was spectacular! I should also mention that they have comfortable beds to nap in if you wished as well as a shower for you to use! Thank you Captain Joey and Hannah! Mahalo and Aloha! The Sandoval-Tobias Family

Pro-war Russian athletes allowed to compete in Paris Olympics despite ban, group says

Portrait of Kim Hjelmgaard

LONDON − More than two-thirds of Russian athletes and over a third of Belarusians expected to compete at the Paris Olympics have violated the International Olympic Committee's neutrality rules by supporting Vladimir Putin's invasion of Ukraine or by working for the Russian military or intelligence services, according to a new report.

"It's unconscionable from a moral perspective to expect a Ukrainian athlete to stand on a world stage next to another athlete who supports the violent commission of crimes against them," said Jeremy Pizzi of human rights law organization Global Rights Compliance , which released the report.

Pizzi said Russia has killed at least 450 Ukrainian athletes since its 2022 invasion, including some former Olympians.

As part of an international campaign to isolate Russia and its ally Belarus, athletes from those countries are only permitted to take part in the Olympics as independent, neutral competitors . They can't use their country's flag, colors or anthems. The IOC also vets athletes to make sure they don't actively support Russia's invasion or have connections to Moscow's armed forces or intelligence services. No Russian or Belarusian state officials have been invited to the Games.

Russia accuses IOC chief: 'conspiracy' to exclude its athletes from 2024 Olympics

Meet Team USA: See which athletes made the U.S. Olympic team and where they are from

But GRC's dossier, released Wednesday evening, said that, despite these apparent safeguards, 17 of the 31 Russian and Belarusian athletes who have accepted invitations to compete in Paris don't meet the IOC's so-called Principles of Participation.

Those rules were established in 2023 after Russian tanks rolled into Ukraine. They prohibit Olympic athletes from supporting the war, including in the media and on social media, or from being contracted to the Russian and Belarusian military or security agencies.

GRC found that 10 − 67% − of the Russian and 7 − 44 % − of the Belarusian Paris-bound athletes should be ineligible to compete under IOC rules.

Among them were a Russian cyclist who violated neutrality rules by "liking" a number of pro-war posts on social media, including posts questioning Ukraine’s right to exist and posts supporting the annexation of Donetsk and Luhansk, two eastern Ukrainian territories held by Russia .

Can Russian athletes compete? Why is Russia banned from Paris Olympics?

A Russian tennis player, GRC found, broke the IOC's rules by "liking" posts about the "military feats" of Russian soldiers killing Ukrainians, as well as posts displaying the pro-war “Z” symbol.

At least two Belarusian athletes who will compete in Paris serve in that country's armed forces, according to GRC, which relied primarily on open-source information for its investigation.

"We cannot comment on individual cases and the decisions of the independent review panel," an IOC spokesman said in a statement to USA TODAY. "It has reviewed all the athletes in accordance with the IOC Executive Board decision and the principles for participation for individual neutral athletes in the Olympic Games Paris 2024."

"Beyond that, we have nothing further to add.”

Olympic fencers: They fled Russia after invasion of Ukraine to win support for U.S. citizenship

A representative from the Russian National Olympic Committee, which has been suspended by the IOC since 2020, did not immediately return a request for comment. Belarusian athletes were similarly banned from competing in Paris, unless as neutrals, because Belarus has allowed Russia to use its territory to carry out attacks on Ukraine. A representative from Belarus' National Olympic Committee also did not return a request for comment.

Pizzi said GRC has repeatedly shared its evidence with the IOC but that the Olympic body had so far refused to act on it.

"The IOC consistently proclaims that its guiding principles are peace, solidarity and human dignity − and these aren't just words I'm taking out of nowhere. They are in the IOC charter." IOC chief Thomas Bach "says them all the time," he added.

A recent report in the Moscow Times said that for the first time in 40 years Russian television may not broadcast the Olympics because of the near-total absence of Russian athletes.

The enigma of Vladimir Putin: What do we really know about Russia's leader?

Some 330 Russians and 104 Belarusians competed at the last Summer Olympics, in Tokyo in 2020. Russia's invasion of Ukraine occurred just a few days after the Winter Olympics in Beijing wrapped up in late February 2022.

In March of that year, because of Russia's unprovoked Ukraine invasion, 71 athletes from Russia and 12 from Belarus were re-classed as neutral athletes at the Paralympics Games, which also took place in Beijing.

In January 2023, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy objected to the inclusion of any Russian athletes in Paris. "We know how often tyrannies try to use sports for their ideological interests. It is obvious that any neutral flag of Russian athletes is stained with blood," he wrote on social media .

Zelenskyy invited Bach to visit Bakhmut , then the sight of intense fighting that cost tens of thousands of lives, "So that he could see with his own eyes that neutrality does not exist."

VIVACE Shines at the 2024 Newport Charter Yacht Show

Posted July 16, 2024 in Charter by Eileen Lopez

The annual Newport Charter Yacht Show, with its nearly four-decade history, consistently impresses as it graces Newport, Rhode Island’s iconic waterfront. This year’s event showcased 15 luxury motor and sailing yachts, ranging from mid-60 feet to over 100 feet in length. Northrop & Johnson proudly presented the stunning 102’ (31m) Alpha motor yacht VIVACE at the show. This Italian-built Spritz 102 model stands out in the market, offering an unparalleled platform for guest entertainment. VIVACE’s exceptional alfresco areas and an energetic, charter-savvy crew ensured unforgettable onboard experiences filled with fun and adventure. The Newport Charter Yacht Show is a prime opportunity for yachts to demonstrate their capabilities in delivering bespoke charter vacations to prospective charter brokers.

VIVACE was a highlight of the show, earning accolades across several competitions, including Best Overall Tablescape, 2nd Place in the Chef Competition (with Chef Monja Jacobs), 1st Place in the Crew Fender Challenge and 2nd Place in the “Stew Try Outs” Crew Challenge.

best superyacht charter

In the Chef’s Competition, chefs were given a “mystery basket” of ingredients just 24 hours before presenting to a panel of three judges. Cooking and heating were performed in the yachts’ galleys, but plating, saucing, and garnishing took place on a staging table under time constraints. Chef Monja Jacobs of VIVACE impressed the judges with her “Scallops and Scapes” dish.

VIVACE’s “Coastal Gardens” tablescape won first prize, judged by professionals from Newport Yacht Interiors. Head judge Cheryl DiGennaro praised the crew’s enthusiasm and creativity, noting their effort in sourcing and custom-decoupaging oyster shells. The table’s styling complemented the yacht’s design, creating a welcoming atmosphere for comfortable conversations with personalized details.

Monday evening’s Crew Competitions, a highlight of the social schedule, featured captains and deckhands attempting steward tasks, inflating fenders and making flower arrangements, all timed to simulate the pressures of chartering. A VIVACE crew member excelled in the fender competition, preparing a 5’ fender with an electric pump in just 54.22 seconds.
