In 1977, fiberglass was used to build the 33s, and the hull was modified after 1982, though Egg Harbor kept the classic convertible sport fisher profile of a long, high foredeck with stainless steel rails and moderately flared bow sweeping back to a low cockpit with open-back deckhouse and functional flybridge with seating for two. Egg Harbors were known for their beautiful mahogany brightwork (later, teak replaced mahogany). For a relatively small boat, the cockpit offered 70 sq ft of fishability. The 37ft Egg Harbor Convertible Sport Fisher was another classic originally built in the early 1960s and continued for over 40 years, transitioning to fiberglass in the 1970s. Other still-popular models are the Golden Egg 38, 43, and 48. Most of the preowned classics available in the boat brokerage market today are from the 1970s, 80s and 90s, when most were built.

The company went through bankruptcy in 1997, after a series of ownership changes and financial struggles, and the 33s were no longer produced after that. Egg Harbor Yachts was bought by Dr Ira Trocki in 1999, a plastic surgeon who had admired the “Eggs” since his New Jersey childhood. He invested $millions to expand and update the production facility and acquire other popular brands (Predator, Topaz, Davis). Modern Egg Harbor open and convertible yacht models were built in the first decade of 2000s by a team of first-class boat builders and renowned designers like Michael Peters, known for his blend of aesthetics with engineering that is evident in the Egg Harbor Predator and Sports Yachts. Currently, only a very few of the later model Egg Harbor Sport Yachts, ranging between 37ft, 43ft and 50ft from years 2001 to 2008 are available in the yacht brokerage market.

The Egg Harbor name is well-respected as one of the original New Jersey boat builders that got their start after WWII in 1947 with four young boat building partners—John Leek, Russell Post, Phil Boyd, Harold “Pee Wee” Care, and designer Ted Haggis of the then-popular Jersey Sea Skiff. Russell Post was known for personally testing each model through the inlet for performance and seakeeping ability in all conditions, and for keeping the build light and fast. Egg Harbors were known for versatility, strong construction, and seaworthiness. An Egg Harbor Owners’ Association was formed to offer a forum for owners to contact each other, for socializing, and to answer questions about older models and to provide old plans and brochures. Many owners share fond memories and photos of youthful adventures on an Egg Harbor. Egg Harbor Yachts continue to provide enjoyment on the water, as day and overnight cruisers and saltwater fishing boats.

History of Egg Harbor Yachts

Egg Harbor Yachts was founded in 1946 in the small fishing town of Egg Harbor, New Jersey, United States. The company started off with building wooden boats, their craftsmanship methods being hailed as impressive and durable. In the coming years, they switched to the advanced process of fibreglass construction which was a significant transition in their boat manufacturing technique. The design of their boats underwent dramatic alterations, their signature adornments and finishes emanating a blend of classic and contemporary vibes. However, the core purpose of delivering high performance, durability, and comfort remained intact.

Among some of the significant milestones in their journey, the launch of the Tournament, SportYacht, and Convertible ranges, along with the larger 50' and 54' yachts received immense appreciation in the 1980s and 1990s. Since its beginning in 1957, Post has developed a solid world-wide reputation as a premier builder of semi-custom yachts from 42 to 56 feet.

The company was founded by Russell Post, who had previously co-founded the original Egg Harbor Yacht Company. He was well-suited for the task, for at the age of 15, he had built his first boat in which he later won an international sailing championship.

Russell always approached boat building with the same energy and enthusiasm. For example, he sold his only car in order to purchase the cedar needed to build the very first Egg Harbor (hull #1). Other operating funds were generated by building and selling small skiffs and sailboats.

The natural inlets of the South Jersey coast, where currents scoured the channels and ocean waves crashed through unchecked, proved to be an ideal testing ground for those early models. Mr. Post made it a point to personally run each boat in order to assure its seaworthiness in all sea conditions.

After the sale of Egg Harbor, Russell enjoyed a short-lived retirement. By 1957 he was back in the boat building business with a new nameplate and company, aptly named Post Marine. With a solid reputation for building quality boats, Russell took the next logical step and opened the current Post facility located on the Great Egg Harbor River in Mays Landing, New Jersey. "Yachts of Quality, Not Quantity Since 1957" was the new company's slogan . . . reflecting a philosophy which has remained management's position today.

With regard to management, Post remains somewhat unique within an industry that often appears to thrive on constant change. In 1975, partners Charlie Walters and Bill Schell purchased the company from Mr. Post. To Charlie and Bill, carrying on the Post tradition amounted to staying the course. In 1957, and at the age of seventeen, Charlie had become Russell Post's second employee.

Over the years, he had seen the pattern for success develop, and had the foresight to take the company to an even higher level with the help of Bill and long-time Vice President Ken Jensen. The conservative management style, that has served the company well through the industry's ups and downs, was a critical part of its success. Unlike many of its counterparts, Post has never tried to build something for everyone. The company has chosen to concentrate its efforts on meeting the high standards of a select number of seasoned boaters. As a result, the crew at Post Marine has been able to maintain a level of quality and value through 54 years of production.

On December 20, 2011 Post Marine Group LLC purchased the assets of Post Marine Co., Inc. Company operations have transitioned from Mays Landing, New Jersey to Chestertown, Maryland. Post Yachts will continue to be run with the same honesty, passion, and spirit that characterized the stewardships of Russell Post, Charlie Walters, Bill Schell, Ken Jensen and their entire Post team. Boat Review: Egg Harbor SportYacht 37

Egg Harbor has been building boats for over 50 years and has maintained its reputation for quality and performance all along. The introduction of its SportYacht 37, the first in a new series of vessels intended to please both fishermen and yachtsmen, upholds that long-founded tradition well. Still, from the hull to the interior, there’s no doubt that this is an all-new Egg Harbor.

The completely new hull, designed for long, comfortable runs with its raised sheer line and enhanced flare, offers a soft, dry ride with excellent performance while conserving space aboard. The hull bottom, keel and chines are constructed of hand-laid, molded fiberglass, with end-grain balsa coring in the hull sides as well as in the decks and cabin top. With a beam of 13.5 feet, the cockpit features plenty of fishing space and room to conveniently store everything you’ll need. Additional features within the cockpit include coaming pads, transom door, boarding box and gate, a tackle center with sink, storage and an icebox, and fish box with a split hatch, livewell, and port and starboard stowage lockers. The cockpit also features a large engine room access hatch, an amenity normally seen only on larger sport-fishermen.

The flybridge access ladder sits to starboard and leads to an oversized cantilevered bridge, a key characteristic of the new SportYacht series, with a design that allows for two helm chairs with walk-behind space. The helm sits amidships and allows for excellent all-around visibility with full instrumentation standard and plenty of room for an extensive electronics array.

Belowdeck, the appointments include a fully equipped galley and a graciously appointed salon. The elegant forward master stateroom features a walk-around berth, while the guest stateroom features over/under berths. The large head includes a full-sized, enclosed shower stall.

Power packages for the 37 include twin 330-hp Cummins B Series engines, and 350-hp or 420-hp Yanmars.
