Fraser Yachts CEO Raphael Sauleau on Yachting’s New Normal
Raphael Sauleau has been navigating an incredibly turbulent time in the industry.
By Samantha Coles
As CEO of yacht brokerage and management company Fraser Yachts, Raphael Sauleau has been navigating an incredibly turbulent time. He speaks to Samantha Coles about how the pandemic is shaping Fraser’s plans for the future.
Raphael Sauleau, CEO of Fraser Yachts, cut a quietly confident figure speaking to us via Zoom from the garden of his home in the South of France — sitting in the sunshine, in his enviable alfresco private office. It was early summer, when lockdown restrictions were tentatively easing around the world, and we could see faint glimmers of light at the end of the Covid-19 tunnel.
His cool, collected demeanor has steered Fraser through these difficult times with a strong focus on protecting people — both employees and clients. His passion for technology has also intensified; it’s proving to be vital not just for business, but for his personal life, too. “Technology has let us work remotely, but I have also been doing a lot of sport — I use Strava, and it’s connected to my bike. My Technogym treadmill has been a fantastic help; I don’t think I would have coped otherwise!”
As the world began to lock down, Sauleau, who champions remote work already, initiated fully remote working for Fraser: “We already had a policy in place called ‘smart work’ where people work remotely a day or two a week. So it wasn’t a difficult process to initiate; in fact, we started remote work fully about 10 days before the country locked down because I could see it was coming our way.
Instead of stressing last minute we thought to just get it sorted. I am a believer in remote work — I think it is a good way to allow people to work without the stress of commuting or leaving children with nannies. I think a mix of remote and office work is a winning situation, and everyone has adapted to the new working method efficiently. Even though we had some challenges with canceling and rescheduling charters, we have been able to do so without going through the trauma of feeling unsafe.”

Perhaps the past few decades of Sauleau’s life, both professional and personal, have shaped this refreshing attitude to a work-life balance. His first foray into the world of yachting was at a young age when he would sail with his uncle. “I am from the western part of France, and from spring until the end of summer we would sail all the western coast in my uncle’s 50m [164ft] sailing boat. I’ve been around boats, and the sea, for some time.”

He went on to work with cruise lines and large shipping management companies before becoming CEO of a family office and then CEO of Fraser. “I was keen to see the other side of the fence. I had to adapt from sea life to shore life: work regular hours, being more sedentary, versus traveling around the world and having hours that are everything but regular. I had to adapt, moving from a big corporation to a private office and a private owner to Fraser.”
While Sauleau extols Fraser’s efforts during the pandemic, there has understandably been a dip in enquiries from the charter and sales sides, but yacht management has been busier than normal as clients seek guidance and advice. Sauleau has noticed that those who normally charter a yacht are now looking to purchase one, as a way to be fully in control of hiring the crew but also to manage safety and hygiene in their own way. On the charter front, Sauleau notes that enquiries are picking up and opportunities are on the horizon.
“We don’t have the normal level of business that we usually have at this time, but there are good opportunities coming our way. A lot of people are looking forward to being back at sea — there is never zero risk, but a yacht is such a confined environment. There are very few individuals onboard, including guests and crew, and we have procedures in place for sanitation and social distancing regulations.”

Before the lockdown, Sauleau notes there was a growing trend in chartering to remote destinations — a trend that will surely be even more popular in a post-lockdown landscape. “Away from the French, Italian Rivieras, people want to go to destinations where they can drop anchor and enjoy the scenery, and not be in the same area as everyone else. I think that the yacht will also become the destination. Of course you can still travel from place to place and go ashore, but people want to just get away with their loved ones and be in a place where they can stay safe.
“We have noticed that some aren’t traveling as far as they used to — Americans are not going to come to Europe, they are deciding to stay around the US. They might charter a yacht in the Caribbean, or even within the US itself — there are so many possibilities. The East Coast of the states is a great place for an Indian summer. In the brokerage world, the American market is by far the biggest in terms of boat ownership. Yachting, being on the water…it’s in their DNA. When the waterways were reopened in America, a lot of people were straight out on their boats. It is something that they were clearly craving. People just want to be on the water.”
Sauleau is steering Fraser through the pandemic / ©Thierry Ameller
There is no doubt this pandemic will have a lingering effect on the way people travel, but Sauleau reverts back to the positive aspects. He speaks about clients with jam-packed schedules who travel constantly, and have now spent the past few months with their families — he describes it as a revelation.
“One thing I always remember about working in a private office is I asked the boss, ‘why do you like yachts so much?’ He said it was the only place where he can find himself with his family, they are all together, and everybody is focused on being together. And this is something we see today — families have been separated by this pandemic. They cannot see each other, or are scared to contaminate one another. Now they see that they can travel on a yacht together. It is the best place to be with your family.”
As for the future of Fraser, a new shareholder means big plans for expansion. Sauleau reverts to his passion for technology; he believes it will be of paramount importance moving forward — for the yachting industry, and indeed the world, to adapt to a new normal.
During lockdown, Fraser conducted online viewings and continued to make sales. He is keen to take this up a notch even when restrictions are lifted, but in a subtle way. “Luxury is all about being able to serve in a very discreet manner. Some clients may disappear for a while because they are busy, and it’s important to have the right tools to keep in touch in one way or another. To still be on their radar without being intrusive…technology allows us to do that.”

Below Deck's Kate Chastain Offers A Shocking Response To Chef Ben Robinson's Surprising Relationship Update
The golden bachelorette premiere sparks hope in bachelor nation after heartbreaker gerry turner's disastrous season, selling sunset: 8 wild scandals that rocked the show (alanna's pioneertown scam, emma's affair rumor & more).
Fraser Olender has been a great addition to Below Deck for the last few seasons, but has he been a producer plant all along? Fraser was introduced to the original Below Deck series during season 9 as a regular stew under Chief Stew Heather Chase. After she was accused by a fellow cast member for using a racial slur, it became a huge controversy, and the network decided not to bring her back. Lucky for Fraser, he was promoted to Chief Stew for Below Deck season 10. Since then, Fraser has remained the Chief Stew in the original series.
After season 10, Fraser returned as the Chief Stew for a second season in Below Deck season 11 . While he was just getting used to working under Captain Lee Rosbach, the captain switched on him, and Captain Kerry Titheradge took his place. Nonetheless, the captain transition was easy for Fraser, almost a little too easy. He and Captain Kerry had their downs last season, but overall, Fraser never got on his bad side. Could this be due to Fraser being a good employee, or is he a producer plant?
Fraser Offers Comedic Relief
From the moment Fraser joined the series, he has offered some sort of comedic relief. Whether it's in his confessionals, under his breath, or to one of his fellow crew members, Fraser always knows how to crack a joke . During Below Deck season 9, Fraser constantly made side remarks under his breath about Heather not being great at her job and how he could do better; he even did this as a Chief Stew. What Fraser says is quite mean, but he says it so witty that it's hard to see it as a dig.
The reason his comedic relief is an indication of Fraser being a Below Deck producer plant is comedic relief is necessary in every type of show, including reality shows. Everyone loves a character who can make them laugh, and Fraser can do that in almost every scene he is in. While drama is great for a show like Below Deck , it also needs a funny character, and that's Fraser.
Fraser Doesn't Seem To Work In Yachting Off Season
According to Fraser's Instagram, he doesn't seem to work as a Chief Stew when he's not filming . All of his grid photos and even his Instagram Stories only include him on a boat if he's vacationing. It's possible Fraser doesn't show off his work or that he decided to quit full-time yachting since appearing on Below Deck . However, most of Fraser's photos, even before appearing on the show, are mostly of him traveling or hanging out with friends. This is also a sign Fraser might be a producer plant like Bri Muller or Chef Johnathan Shillingford from Below Deck Mediterranean .
When someone's resume cannot be found on LinkedIn, usually, this means their career in this field was short or never existed. In Fraser's case, he seemingly did work in yachting before, but it does seem it was for a short time. Also, if Fraser did work in yachting for a short time, it was likely so he could potentially join Below Deck . This makes the most sense, as Fraser is no stranger to appearing on reality TV.
Fraser Has Appeared In Other Reality Shows
Before appearing on Below Deck , Fraser had a short stint on the British reality series Made In Chelsea . Fraser's appearance on Made In Chelsea was minor and didn't last very long. He starred in Made In Chelsea season 11 as a friend of full-time cast member Lucy Watson and only made an appearance in a handful of episodes. Fraser's time on the show was short, and he quickly moved on from this show to Below Deck .
It's very likely Below Deck producers scouted Fraser from Made In Chelsea and asked him to join the Bravo series. A lot of cast members from the Below Deck franchise are from countries outside of the U.S., so it's possible producers show Made In Chelsea and reached out to Fraser about joining Below Deck . Fraser did make quite the impression on Made In Chelsea , so it's not shocking that producers maybe wanted him on Below Deck to stir the pot .
Whether or not Fraser is a producer plant doesn't matter. He adds value to the cast and has become an integral part of the franchise now. With Fraser slated to join Below Deck season 12 , viewers are certain he will bring the laughs, drama, and so much more.
Below Deck is available to stream on Peacock.

Below Deck is a Reality television series and franchise that has seen many spinoffs since its creation in 2013. The original series follows the lives of a crew that lives on a Superyacht called Honor and chronicles their experiences during "charter season."
Below Deck Sailing Yacht Season 5 cast: Meet Captain Glenn’s new and returning crew members
Captain Glenn Shephard will be back on the small screen soon for Below Deck Sailing Yacht Season 5.
After a delay and a slew of fan speculation, Season 5 of Below Deck Sailing Yacht finally received a premiere date and a trailer.
However, in true Below Deck fashion, a couple of alums make up Captain Glenn’s latest crew, but a fan favorite is missing.
Colin MacRae isn’t returning as Chief Engineer after a turbulent Season 4 that fractured his friendships with Gary King and Daisy Kellier.
The three helped revamp the sailing show after a lackluster Season 1, making it a hit along with Captain Glenn. Colin will undoubtedly be missed.
Below Deck Sailing Yacht stars Daisy Kelliher and Gary King are back
Two people needing no introduction are Gary and Daisy, who are each back for their fourth season on Below Deck Sailing Yacht.
Last summer, photos of Gary and Daisy filming Season 5 were leaked; honestly, we weren’t surprised to see them in the mix. Despite their friction, which amps up for Season 5, Daisy and Gary make good television.
Gary was featured much less in the trailer than in previous seasons, and that likely has to do with the sexual misconduct allegations that came out after Season 5 was filmed. Recently, Gary shared an update about his accuser as he continues to proclaim his innocence.

Who are Captain Glenn Shephard’s new Below Deck Sailing Yacht Season 5 crew members?
Chef Cloyce Martin takes over the galley, and at 22, his age will play a huge factor in the season. We already see him clash with Daisy in the trailer.
Davide Morosi takes over Colin’s chief engineer role, and he seems to be pretty private, with little to no activity on social media.
Stew Diana Cruz declares herself “an organized mess” who has caught the acting and yachting bug.
View this post on Instagram A post shared by Diana Cruz (@dianacruzc_)
Danni Warren rounds out the interior crew. She has a connection with Below Deck Med’s Bri Muller and seems to want to be in the social media influencer game, too.
Deckhand Keith Allen catches Daisy’s eye on Below Deck Sailing Yacht Season 5. Keith isn’t just a sailing yachtie but a photographer and diver who loves to travel.
Emma Crouch makes up the rest of Gary’s deck team. She’s all about being a yachtie, including helping others get into the business as a trainer with Paper Boat Yachting Academy.

That’s a brief preview of the Below Deck Sailing Yacht Season 5 cast. Fans will have to turn in to find out more about Captain Glenn’s crew, especially to learn how Daisy and Gary work together after their Season 4 fallout.
Below Deck Sailing Yacht Season 5 premieres on Monday, October 7 at 9/8c on Bravo. Seasons 1-4 are streaming on Peacock.
