• About the Star

The Star is one of the most prolific keelboats in the world for a reason: it is an incredible boat to sail. Designed in 1911 by Francis Sweisguth, it has proven to be a classic in every sense. It is the oldest Olympic class, having first been used in competition in 1932, and still at the heart of that competition today. Supported by a worldwide association the Star as a class is one of the best organized in sailing, with over 7,500 yachts built over its 80 year history, and 2000-plus actively racing today.

The Star has evolved into the consummate craft for all ranges of competition and performance sailing: its equipment and rig is simple enough for the novice, yet versatile enough for those on the forefront of sailing. It's large, powerful sailplan, combined with a sleek hull and light weight, propel the boat in the faintest of airs, while the flexible spar can be tuned to "de-power" when the breeze kicks up. The large main is infinitely adjustable, allowing the sailor to completely control the driving surface of the sail. Boats today are generally constructed of fiberglass, with positive flotation and an integrated keel. The design, sails, and equipment of the Star are governed by stringent class rules, created to improve competition on the basis of skill and control cost . This has also served to help the longevity of the design, keeping older boats competitive through careful evolution.

Stars are generally "dry-sailed", that is, stored on their trailers when not in use, and with a total weight around 1500 lbs, can easily be towed from place to place.

Many of the world's top sailors past and present have been involved in the Star Class. It's list of former World Champions reads like Who's Who of yachting: other top sailors such as Colin Beashel, John Kostecki, Mats Johansson, Hans Vogt, Benny Anderson, Rod Davis and Mark Reynolds are also involved in the Star class. But the class is made up of a variety of sailors of all ages and skill levels. One race on a Star has hooked some sailors for life: they'll tell you: It's a thrill.

Star: Art and Machine

The Star has practiced a philosophy of design evolution over its 80 year lifetime. Always staying at the forefront of sailing technology, the Star maintains a conservative balance aimed at keeping the level of competition high, holding costs in check and preserving the initial spirit of this great yacht. The priorities of safety and practicality have ruled most of the changes made over the years. This control over development of the class has kept boats that would have been retired at their age in other classes racing well into their golden years. Some of the features that can be found on today's Starboat are:

Adjustable Jib Leads The four-way action of the deck-mounted jib leads allow you to carve the shape of the sail, keeping a good shape to match changing conditions.

Hiking Vest A simple harness allows the crew to get his or her weight out of the boat more efficiently. Made legal by class rules in 1981, the vest must be equipped with a quick-release to ensure safe exit in an emergency. The vest eliminates alot of the exertion and gymnastics traditionally associated with extended periods of hiking.

Suction Bailers Developed by Star sailor Duarte Bello, sailors quickly discovered that several strategically placed bailers can quickly and safely drain any excess water in the cockpit Most Stars generally have 4, two in the center of the cockpit, and two located near the chines.

Circular Boom Vang Also developed by Duarte Bello for Stars, this innovation reached popularity in the 1960's, having proven to be a safe and efficient way to control the high loads of the long boom. This development later spread to other classes, among the 12-meters of America's Cup fame.

Whisker Pole The simple sailplan utilizes a whisker pole to sail wing-on-wing off the wind, thus making the most of the generous sail area.

Class Sail Measurement The ISCYRA measures every sail to ensure fair competition: the rules do not allow the exotic materials that drive up cost and cut the lifetime of other racing sails.

NORFOLK STAR Sailing yacht for sale

NORFOLK STAR is a 37m (121.4ft) pedigree sailing yacht, designed and built by renowned Italian shipyard Perini Navi. This yacht is in superb condition having recently undergone a multi-million euro refit in 2020, as well as her five-year Lloyd's survey. This included a new main engine, two new generators, PLC system, Inmarsat VSAT dome, 505 Williams tender, Doyle sails and Reckmann rigging. The interior and exterior furnishings have been recovered, all surfaces and marble has been professionally cleaned and coated. The teak decks have also been professionally sanded. On deck, the main cockpit is split into two areas, one with easy seating around a circular coffee table, whilst the other provides a dining area. Both can comfortably sit up to eight people. For relaxation, a large cushioned sunbathing area is in position immediately behind the shaded cockpit. This is a favourite spot to watch the world as you sail by.

Down below, NORFOLK STAR's bright upper salon has a large L-shaped sofa around a coffee table and a forward facing desk, with panoramic views. Her interior is finished in cherry wood, and the large hull portholes give the interior a particularly light and airy feel. From the upper salon a large stairway forward shows the way to the main salon. There are two sofas and a more formal dining area in the main salon which features an extendable walnut table.

This yacht offers a family-friendly layout with accommodation for six guests. On the lower deck, the full-width private master stateroom is found aft. Here you find a generous, glamorous space with walk-in wardrobe, en suite bathroom with a full bath, plus a seperate study area. Next door are two twin cabins that sleep another four guests. There is no compromise in comfort, as each cabin comes with an en suite shower room. There is also the option of an additional pullman berth for an extra guest.

Once aboard, NORFOLK STAR looks after her guests with Samsung LED TVs, and Creston Control AV System. At anchor, the swimming platform drops into place on the starboard side, and all the water toys come out - there's something for everyone to have fun, from paddle boards and flight boards. Classic Lantana motor yacht Nordic Star sold

The 28.07 metre classic motor yacht Nordic Star has been sold in-house by Northrop & Johnson with Jim Elliott and Todd Rittenhouse representing the seller and Paul Daubner introducing the new owner.

Built in aluminium by Florida yard Lantana to a design by Jack Hargrave , she was delivered in 1969 to the US West Coast and has remained there ever since. In 2015, her interior was gutted and replaced with satin finished teak joinery, a teak and holly sole, and all-new soft goods. She also went through all the necessary safety upgrades to obtain a Coastwise Certificate of Inspection for up to 50 passengers, making her ideal for entertaining.

Nordic Star offers accommodation for six guests in three well-appointed staterooms. The master suite is located amidships for added comfort to the owners while two twins are situated aft and all cabins have en suite bathroom facilities.

The main deck area freely flows from the lounge to the formal dining space and then a short hallway leads to the well-equipped galley. Her aft deck is the perfect place to host guests as well as dine al fresco. The area is large with two built-in settees and two teak hi-lo tables. In 2019, the aft deck was fitted with a Strataglass enclosure so it can be enjoyed on cooler days. 

Twin Caterpillar D343T diesel engines allow a gentle cruising speed of 10 knots and she is fitted with Naiad fin stabilisers.

Lying in Newport Beach, California, Nordic Star was asking $1,395,000.

Boarding from the stern, guests can benefit from the huge hydraulic door which provided a safe platform for all guests to enter and leave the yacht. Where necessary, the foldable classic passerelle can also be used, as well as a boarding ladder for direct access to the water. The stern platform also boosts a superb hidden shower unit which is instantly deployed when guests are swimming or need to cool down .

Standing on the aft deck guests can see the large sunbathing areas and immediately behind are the unique and innovative "chaise-lounge" chairs which fold out of the superstructureand are completely hidden when not in use.

The upper saloon is entered through the compressed air operated sliding doors to reveal a guest bar to port including coffee machine, ice maker and sink. To starboard is the internal upper dining area for 8 providing stunning uninterrupted views across the water, and a tinted sunroof above. Forward is the interior helm station and extensive fridges to enable guests' immediate access to cold drinks .

Stepping down into the lower saloon guests enter a very luxurious area combining two seating areas and fantastic views to the aft of the yacht. this area includes a multimedia system and TV. The main iPad control unit is situated here which controls the entertainment system throughout the yacht, though any guest can control this in their own cabin through their iPad or iPhone.

Accommodations

Forward of the lower saloon is the Galley. The Galley is exceptionally well equipped with two enormous fridge freezers, washer and dryer, oven, dishwasher and all the equipment needed by a qualified chef. Refreshments can be served from here and the yacht produces its own filtered potable water which can be still or carbonated .

A California yacht owner's vicious beef with a dock worker has reached death-threat levels -- and their exchange was caught on camera and included a nude, and very rude, gesture!

Check out the clip ... it all unfolds when San Diego entrepreneur Ajay Thakore swings by the swanky Marriott Marquis Marina in his rare $4.5M Tecnomar for Lamborghini 63 yacht to pick up one of his employees -- but things boil over when dock worker Joseph Holt tells him he can't be there.

Thakore, the CEO of medical advertising firm Doctor Multimedia, flips out on Holt big time ... and starts spewing threats like, "I will kill you, you know I will kill you, I will kill."

And it doesn't stop there -- as Thakore's pulling out of the harbor, he drops trou to make a full frontal salute in Holt's direction. Stay classy, San Diego!

Holt's only retaliation was flipping the bird, and he later told CBS8 that was all he could do to keep his cool and avoid escalating the situation.

Holt says parts of the altercation were not captured on camera, and he adds ... Thakore not only threatened to kill him, but also claimed to have connections who could totally mess up his life.

Holt also says Thakore pulled out $100 bills and tossed them at him, even chucking some in the water.

BTW, Thakore's done some backpedaling since the ugly exchange -- he now says, "The interaction that occurred yesterday was regrettable. What started as a minor misunderstanding escalated into an argument, and I apologize for my actions and to those who witnessed the unfortunate exchange."

FWIW ... One of Thakore’s employees claims the whole thing began because other dock workers blocked him from boarding the yacht.

Things are heating up with a significant quarterback shuffle across the NFL. Yet, many are amazed by the lack of movement from Chicago Bears star quarterback Justin Fields, who was expected to be in high demand. Perhaps it’s because he was never on the chopping block in the first place.

The Plan For Justin Fields Is Not What You Think

Chicago bears star quarterback justin fields might not be for sale.

To start, let’s rewind. In January, Bears General Manager Ryan Poles emphasized that he would have to be “ blown away ” to draft a quarterback. There’s no doubt that this year’s quarterback draft class stands out, with USC’s Caleb Williams emerging as the top quarterback prospect. Many NFL observers have hailed Williams as a “generational prospect” due to his ability to improvise and create opportunities out of seemingly impossible situations.

However, the Bears may be hesitant. Williams withheld his medical information from teams until his Pro Day and pushed back his meeting with the Bears, which might have left a wrong impression on Poles. Poles insist on wanting total conviction on Williams and other top quarterback prospects before deciding. Getting to know the person and not just the player is essential.

Senior NFL Insider Adam Schefter stated that the Bears have not yet started the process to trade Justin Fields . During the NFL Combine, Poles mentioned he wanted to do Justin right because he understands Fields’ desire for clarity regarding his future. Doing Justin “right” might imply keeping him on the team to serve as the starting quarterback next season.

Going A Different Route

Justin Fields hasn’t been traded yet, and more teams are solidifying their quarterback plan for the upcoming season. It appears increasingly likely that any potential trade involving Fields may occur after the NFL Draft. If the Bears decide to retain Fields, one scenario involves them trading back one position with the Washington Commanders. The Commanders recently traded their quarterback, Sam Howell, to the Seattle Seahawks. This suggests the Commanders are eyeing a quarterback with their first-round selection. Given Offensive Coordinator Kliff Kingsbury’s ties to Caleb Williams , it’s evident that the Commanders would be more than happy to trade up and draft Williams. By trading back with the Commanders, the Bears can position themselves to draft another generational prospect in Marvin Harrison Jr.

Bottom Line On Justin Fields’ Situation

Honestly, no one knows what Poles is planning to do with Fields. Poles himself may not even have a definitive answer at this point. What remains undeniable is the talent Fields and Williams bring to the table, making this one of Ryan Poles’ hardest decisions as Bears General Manager. The weight of the choice and its potential ramifications for the Bears’ future success cannot be overstated. Given the weight of this decision, it’s understandable why the process of trading Fields has extended beyond initial expectations.

The Bears are approaching the situation with patience and deliberation. In doing so, they are prioritizing long-term success and stability, even if it means enduring a prolonged period of uncertainty and speculation.

100 paintings by plein air artists painting Hoosier Waterways goes to auction May 4

One hundred paintings of Indiana waterways by five Hoosier plein air artists — rendered during the COVID-19 pandemic — will be available for the first time at auction in May.

The sale culminates a three-year project — 20 months of painting and an 18-month traveling exhibit, plus an accompanying 200-plus page coffee table book, “Indiana Waterways: The Art of Conservation.” The book has sold out.

Paintings by brothers Dan and Tom Woodson, of Muncie, Curt Stanfield, of Rosedale, John Kelty, of Fort Wayne, and Avon Waters, of Converse, will be available at a final exhibit beginning April 2 at the Indiana Landmarks Center, 1201 Central Ave., Indianapolis. A “First Friday” opening reception will be 6 to 9 p.m. The exhibit remains open through May 2.

The auction is set for 1 p.m. May 4. Doors open at 11 a.m. for previews and registration. Wickliff Auctioneers will conduct the sale.

The project highlights the unique intersection of art and conservation.

Sponsored by  Art Nature Consortium , the project promotes conservation efforts to restore 65,000 miles of Indiana waterways.

In August 2020, around an outside BBQ grill, the artists committed to paint Indiana waterways then create a touring exhibition.

“Pretty early on, we discovered how interested others were in what we were doing,” said Avon Waters, lead artist for the project and chief executive officer of the nonprofit, Art Nature Consortium.

The eclectic mix of artists and writers made this project unique, Waters said.

“We use various mediums, styles, and literary arts to communicate the need to clean up our waterways," Waters said. "Many of Indiana’s rivers and streams are unfit for human contact and are rated some of the worst in the nation.”

Art Nature Consortium has embarked on a second project — this one examining Indiana’s glacial lakes, the most southern of any in the world.

“Glacial lakes are not only respites for homeowners and outdoor enthusiasts but irreplaceable natural features across northern Indiana,” said Jerry Sweeten, freshwater ecologist and founder of Ecosystems Connections . “But their beauty masks the reality that they are seriously threatened and without urgent action, glacial lakes will continue to degrade.

“Harmful algae blooms and poor water quality compromises the recreational use, property values, and resiliency of these natural systems. Action is needed sooner than later,” he said.

Indiana artists, scientists and writers are working now to tell the story of the chronic, accumulative effect of phosphorus pollution on these ecological gems.

Research, paired with interpretations by Indiana artists, will chronicle the forgotten dead zones, raise awareness to their plight and give voice to the critical work that lies ahead.

Exhibitions and a companion book will be available in 2026.

Is TikTok getting banned in the US? Is Steven Mnuchin buying it? Here's what to know

The future of social media app TikTok is cloudy in the U.S. after the House of Representatives approved a bill to force the sale of the company or face a ban .

President Joe Biden has pledged to sign the bill, but it faces an uphill battle in the Senate, where it is much more divisive.

Here's what you need to know.

Why are they banning TikTok?

Congress hasn't banned TikTok yet. The legislation calls for its parent company to divest or sell TikTok  or TikTok will be banned from app stores and web-hosting services in the U.S.

Why should TikTok be banned?

The legislation’s proponents argue the app, immensely popular with teens and young people for its customized song and dance features on short clip videos, poses national security risks. TikTok's parent company is based in Beijing and  may expose American user data  to Chinese government surveillance.

Who owns TikTok?

TikTok is owned by ByteDance , Headquartered in Beijing.

A team led by Yiming Zhang and Rubo Liang founded ByteDance in 2012. It developed mobile apps Douyin, available only in China, TikTok, Douyin's international counterpart, and Toutiao.

When does TikTok get banned?

If approved by the Senate and signed into law, the bill gives TikTok 165 days to sell or face a ban. And even if the Senate passes the measure, a long road lies ahead.

TikTok says it will exercise its legal rights before it considers a sale of its US operations. The platform has  successfully challenged similar moves  in the courts.

Who could buy TikTok? Steven Mnuchin looking to pull together investor group

A sale seems unlikely. Companies large enough to buy TikTok like Meta, Google and Microsoft would probably not attempt to do so because of the Biden administration’s aggressive use of antitrust law to prevent the tech giants from getting even larger. Also, a sale would require Beijing’s approval. Last year, the Chinese government said it opposed a forced sale. 

However, former treasury secretary Steven Mnuchin is putting together an investor group to try to buy TikTok, he told CNBC on Thursday.

“I think the legislation should pass and I think it should be sold,” Mnuchin, who leads Liberty Strategic Capital, told CNBC’s “Squawk Box” on Thursday. “It’s a great business and I’m going to put together a group to buy TikTok.”

When does the Senate vote on TikTok ban?

The upper chamber has also been less bullish about the legislation. Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., has not said whether he would bring the House’s bill up for a vote, explaining he would have to confer with committee chairs.

While most senators agree that TikTok’s Chinese parent company poses a security threat to the U.S., many have concerns about the legality of singling out one company.

The bipartisan bill was overwhelmingly approved by the House, 352 to 65, with one member voting "present."

What happened in previous attempts to ban TikTok and what do polls say?

Previous efforts to rein in TikTok have failed. In 2020, Donald Trump tried to ban the app by executive order  but courts blocked that effort. Since then, Trump has  flipped his position on TikTok .

Americans are split. A recent poll from the Associated Press and NORC Center for Public Affairs Research found that 31% of U.S. adults would favor a nationwide ban on TikTok use while 35% would oppose a TikTok ban. But among those who use TikTok daily, a national ban is unpopular with 73% saying they would oppose it.

What does TikTok say?

TikTok says lawmakers are trying to  shut it down  in the U.S.

TikTok has pushed back with a vigorous lobbying campaign, including push alerts urging creators to call members of Congress. That part of the campaign mostly backfired. TikTok also dispatched creators and its CEO Shou Zi Chew to Capitol Hill to eunsure lawmakers that the platform has kept users' information safe from outside manipulation.

"This legislation, if signed into law, will lead to a ban of TikTok in the United States," he warned in a video shared on social media platform X on Wednesday.
