Marlin 33 is the multihull of the year 2022
The foldable sailing trimaran Marlin 33 has won the prestigious ‘Best Multihull of 2022’ award, the world’s highest accolade for multihull sailing and motor boats. Awarded in recent days at the International Multihull Boat Show in La Grande Motte, France, the prize was consigned into the hands of the Marlin 33’s designer, Dane Jan Andersen , at a special ceremony.
Mr Andersen is the head of Vision Boats , a small Danish team specializing in the design of multihull yachts that has an established working relationship with Marlin Trimarans. Designer, builder and sailor, with the Marlin 33 Mr Andersen has developed a trimaran for both racing and cruising that combines extreme sailing speed, great comfort and attention to aesthetics. It is one of the fastest trimarans in the world, built entirely in carbon with a set of innovations that have distinguished the work of Marlin Trimarans and Vision Boats, in particular its characteristic of being foldable and thus easily trailerable , but also easily assembled by just two people. The Marlin 33 won over the public at La Grande Motte: not only did the boat come top of the “Sailing Multihulls up to 40 feet” classification, it also received the most votes overall (47.36%) to win the first overall prize as the best multihull of the year, beating all the other boats and yachts in the competition .
As well as offering above-average sailing performance in its category, also thanks to its extreme lightness (the boat weighs just 1460 kilograms ), Marlin 33 has ample space on board to comfortably accommodate an entire family even on long distance cruises, with the saloon measuring 1.95 metres in height, cabins to accommodate six people and a table seating eight. The trimaran is also very easy to steer, offering easy handling and excellent visibility, especially in the two-rudder option. It is equipped with a 450W solar panel to power the Torqeedo electric motor, lights and on-board equipment, making it completely energy autonomous.
Perfect in shallow waters as well as when sailing in archipelagos, bays, fjords and rivers, Marlin 33 finally stands out for the high volume of its side hulls, which guarantee maximum safety even in strong winds while sailing.
Series production of the Marlin 33 has already started at the Elica Yard in Bulgaria.

Marlin 33 : Travelling, racing, racing
Fridtjof Gunkel
· 30.11.2022
Jan Andersen holds the record in the world's largest single-handed race (450 entries) with his "Black Marlin": it took the designer and boat builder just 14 hours and eight minutes to complete the 133 nautical mile course around the Danish island of Funen. That was in 2019 and remains unbeaten across all classes to this day. The carbon trimaran is now going into series production as the Marlin 33.
I simply built the sailing ship that I wanted to have myself"
There is a market for them. They are perhaps the most consistent performance cruisers and have become increasingly important in recent years: On the one hand, trimarans can still be comfortably equipped, on the other hand they deliver high performance, top speeds beyond the 20-knot mark are possible, high average speeds are guaranteed, and they even perform very well when cruising.
- Read here: The special boat - "Black Marlin" in portrait
Reason enough for a flourishing market segment, which is currently mainly occupied by Corsair, Astus and Dragonfly. Designer and project manager Jan Andersen from Denmark does not see these boats as direct competitors. This is because the Dragonfly, which is comparable in size to the Marlin 33, is more than twice as heavy, even if this is partly compensated for by a mainsail that has twelve square metres more surface area than that of the Marlin 33 in the "Evolution" version. Other trimarans, such as the SeaCart 30, are not cosy, but pure racing boats
From the Danube to the world
The series boat developed from "Black Marlin" is intended to be positioned between the Dragonfly and Corsair cruising tris and the pure regatta boats. The "Black Marlin" is being built in small series as the Marlin 33 at the Elica shipyard. Kaloyan Radulov's company is located in Silistra/Bulgaria on the banks of the Danube and is part of the Elica Group, which manufactures harvesting machinery, among other things. The 20,000 square metre facility is equipped with a state-of-the-art seven-axis milling machine, CNC machines, compression tables and ovens, and has set up a furniture department specialising in lightweight parts. Elica builds parts such as cores and moulds, complete boats from sandwich with glass or carbon layers as well as all common resin systems and also using the vacuum infusion process in moulds or as individual constructions. The shipyard produces its own series of motorboat catamarans, the Omaya 50+.
The Marlin 33 is made from carbon sandwich using the vacuum infusion process. This gives the boat a weight of just 1.5 tonnes - ready to sail. It derives its stability from the floats, which are folded out to an impressive width of 7.55 metres. The floats can be folded in for the box or for winter storage, reducing the width to 3.55 metres. The draught can also be varied from 2.10 to 0.40 metres with the kick-up rudders and centreboard.
The price is reasonable
The carbon trimaran is expected to cost 450,000 euros, including VAT. This includes a rotating carbon mast with soft rigging, a carbon bowsprit, built-in electric motor (Torqeedo), lithium batteries, carbon table in the saloon and even high-quality laminate sails (main, self-tacking jib, code zero) and a gennaker. There is a racing and a cruising version with a slightly shorter rig and extension options.

The Marlin trimarans are innovative and modern carbon multihulls. With sailing performance far above normal. Probably the fastest trailerable and foldable sailing racer-cruiser trimarans of the World. Perfectly made for single- and double-handed racing and cruising.
Great for team and family adventures.
The high volume in the amas (side hulls) allows flying the two windward hulls above the waves for maximum speed. The volume and design of the amas also provide great safety in strong winds against nose-dives. And the two rudders allow full safe control in all wind and wave conditions.
The first “Black” Marlin trimaran with the designer, builder and sailor Jan Andersen is multiple winner of line honors (first ship home) and record holder at the World´s largest single-handed race “Silverrudder” (Denmark, 450 yachts competing). With more victories at legendary races in Europe, the Marlin trimaran is a well-proved concept and design.
The Marlin trimarans have kick-up centreboards and rudders. This avoids major damage at the boards and hulls if you hit something in the water. Perfect for sailing in archipelagos, fjords, rivers and bays with shallow and tidal waters.
The Marlin trimaran is self-sufficient in energy with a 450 W solar panel on the roof of the deckhouse, which supplies power for its electric motor, light and other equipment on board.
Last, and perhaps most importantly, is that Marlin trimaran weight of only 1460 kg fully ready to sail. It can be done, because it is built with carbon laminates and epoxy infusion. This construction method make the boats fast and stable as possible for racing and cruising.
