The Power Catamaran Compilation
- By Yachting Staff
- Updated: December 21, 2018
Power Catamarans have been growing leaps and bounds in popularity, and, in lengths and widths. And for good reason. These cruise-centric yachts offer homelike livability for avid travelers, are fuel efficient and are fairly intuitive to run. Power cats are popular in the bareboat charter market too, for these very reasons.
Here, we take a look at 12 catamarans ranging from a cruising-couple-size 36-footer to a 78-footer for friends, family and some more friends. And there are myriad power options: outboards, diesel inboards, hybrid or even all-solar power.
Fountaine Pajot MY44
The Fountaine Pajot MY44 , a creation of Italian architect Pierangelo Andreani and French designer Daniel Andrieu, has a main deck that’s open from the aft-deck seating all the way forward to the starboard helm station. The sense of spaciousness is significant, for several reasons. First, four glass panels aft can all slide to port, creating an indoor-outdoor space with the aft deck and salon. In the salon, 32-inch-high windows extend for 12 feet down the sides of the yacht, with three sections per side, bringing in natural light along with the three forward panes that comprise the windshield. Finally, 6-foot-6-inch headroom provides vertical clearance, with a 21-foot-7-inch beam that adds interior roominess while keeping the yacht stable.

Silent-Yachts 55
The ideas about which solar panels, electric motors, inverters and the like to use — and more importantly, Michael Köhler says, how to configure them — became the basis for the brand Silent-Yachts. The company offers 55-, 64- and 79-foot catamarans that run on solar-electric propulsion. The Silent 55 premiered this fall, and the 64 is sold out for the next two years, Köhler says.

Horizon PC74
As founder and director of The Powercat Company, a Horizon Power Catamarans distributor, Stuart Hegerstrom had long believed that catamaran builders needed to design their yachts to more stylish standards.
“The boats were very boxy,” he says, based on his years of experience with cats in the charter market. He and his partner, Richard Ford, asked Horizon to produce models that had high-end finishes and looked good inside and out.
The Horizon team brought in mega-yacht designer JC Espinosa to work with its own craftsmen. The result aboard the Horizon PC74 is a catamaran with exterior styling, layout and functionality that should appeal to private and charter owners alike.

The Aquila 36 is a departure from her sisterships in that she is an outboard-powered, express-cruiser-style catamaran, but she also adheres to MarineMax’s philosophies.
With a single main living level from bow to stern and a beam of 14 feet 7 inches, the Aquila 36 is like a bowrider on steroids. She has seating that can handle 20 adults for outings and barbecues, and there are two staterooms below, one in each hull, for family weekending. The staterooms have nearly queen-size berths, en suite heads, stowage and 6-foot-6-inch headroom.

Lagoon Seventy 8 Powercat
Lagoon is a division of Groupe Beneteau, the world’s largest builder of sailing yachts, and the Lagoon Seventy 8 Powercat is a developmental sistership of its Seventy 7 super sailing cat. The Seventy series yachts are built at Construction Navale Bordeaux in France, which had to add a new yard to construct these catamarans because they require separate stern molds for the power and sail versions.

Horizon PC60
To understand the Horizon PC60 power catamaran , you need to put aside preconceived notions about midsize yacht amenities. For example, main-deck master suites are the province of yachts over 100 feet length overall. Incorrect. This 60-footer has an elegant and spacious owner’s stateroom on the same level as the salon. If you want a 14-foot center console tender on a 60-foot yacht, you have to tow it. Wrong again. On the PC60, you hoist it onto the upper deck, no problem.

40 Open Sunreef Power
Sunreef is known for pushing the boundaries of catamaran design, incorporating four adjustable hydrofoils into a twin-hulled speedboat.
The Polish builder is one of several European builders (including Evo, Fjord, Wider and Wally) transforming the open day-boat category with creative designs. Beyond its hydrofoils, the 40 Open Sunreef Power ‘s cockpit has side “wings” along the aft gunwales that fold out at anchor, widening the beam from 17 feet to 22 feet 9 inches.

Sunreef 50 Amber Limited Edition
Sunreef Yachts introduced its 50 Amber Limited Edition , with plans to launch just 10 hulls of the exclusive design.
The Sunreef 50 Amber Limited Edition will have a carbon fiber mast and boom, four layout options and numerous amber-colored elements, including the hull.

Lagoon 630 Motor Yacht
Fitted with the optional twin 300-horsepower Volvo Penta D4 diesels, the Lagoon 630 MY burns only 1.64 gph total at 6 knots, giving a theoretical range of 2,952 nautical miles with standard tankage of 793 gallons. Hull No. 1 had an optional 502-gallon tank, giving it transatlantic range.
Luxury, stability and economy are all hallmarks of Lagoon’s return to luxury motor yachts. If you can take a ride, it will be worth your time.

Fountaine Pajot MY 37
The Fountaine Pajot MY 37 easily accommodates the seafaring family with three- and four-stateroom options. In the three-cabin version, called Maestro, you’ll find an owner’s suite in the portside hull with a queen-size berth and en suite head. Two double-berth cabins and one more head are available for the kids. If your brood is bigger, the Quator setup features four double cabins with two heads.
The 37 is a traveler and can be powered with twin 150 hp or 220 hp Volvo Penta diesels. Top speed with the smaller engines is 17 knots, while it’s 20 knots with the bigger power plants. Interestingly, at 7 knots, the fuel consumption is the same, with either set of motors offering voyagers a 1 ,000-nm range.

Solarwave 64
Many yachts boast eco chops because they have a handful of solar panels that power the microwave or navigation lights. The Solarwave 64 , launched last summer, has the potential to run on sunshine alone. The vessel’s 42 solar panels generate 15 kW that are stored in batteries weighing about 1,300 pounds. They connect to electric motors.

Glider SS18
This British builder says it strives for design innovation and the Glider SS18 displays that DNA, the result of 8 years of research and development. She has a head-turning, catamaran hull form constructed from aluminum and composite materials. She is 60 feet LOA with a 17-foot beam, and has a relatively shallow 1-foot draft. Powered by quad Yamaha 300 hp outboards, she can reportedly reach 50 knots, and with her Stability Control System (SCS), should give a smooth ride while doing it.

Marine News from the Great Lakes
Discover a smooth ride on the great lakes with a power catamaran.
Published: Saturday, September 29, 2012 7:00 am By: Great Lakes Powercats
In the rough waters off Australia and South Africa, all rescue boats, police boats, and close to half of recreational boats are power catamarans. Along the east coast of the United States, power catamarans are fast becoming popular among fishing and cruising boaters who often venture out in rough conditions. Closer to home here in the Great Lakes, the Arnold Ferry service to Mackinac Island runs cats, and the Lake Michigan ferry is a catamaran, too.
Why? Because cats are safe, stable, fast, fuel efficient, and draw very little water. But the biggest reason Aussies, South Africans and offshore anglers choose cats is they provide the smoothest ride on rough waters. When the waters are rough, smart boaters are turning to the catamaran’s stable ride and seaworthy safety. The ride and protection afforded by cats is so extraordinary, they can add an extra month of boating time to the Great Lakes boating season in the spring and the fall.
In the US, 85% of the power catamarans are built by the PowerCat Group under the Glacier Bay, World Cat, Carolina Cat and Livingston brands. They are all powered by quiet and efficient four-stroke outboard engines, and just one ride on a cat in rough water makes a believer out of boating enthusiasts.
Now, here is the great news: these cats are finally getting to the Great Lakes. Dave Gray and Joe Kostrzewa, from Traverse City, Michigan, have been partners in various ventures spanning over 40 years. They owned Power Cat Group cats in Florida for years and could not understand why the boats were not in the Great Lakes. To introduce cats to the Great Lakes, they teamed up with Brad Koster, the owner of EJ Mertaugh’s Boat Works in Hessel, Michigan, and working with Andrew Brown, President of the Power Cat Group, and formulated their latest venture: Great Lakes Power Cats, LLC.
Great Lakes Power Cats, LLC is now the exclusive Midwest distributor (including all of the Great Lakes and Canada) for the world’s largest power catamaran builder, the Power Cat Group. Great Lakes Power Cats represents four brands and 25 models of Glacier Bay, World Cat, Carolina Cat and Livingston catamarans ranging from 8’ to 34’.
The main goal of Great Lakes Power Cats is to develop the territory with quality dealers and representatives who can enthusiastically demonstrate the unique performance of these special vessels. The first dealer on board was Mertaugh’s in Hessel, Michigan. The next large dealer group to join was Jefferson Beach Marina, with locations in St. Clair Shores, Grand Haven and Charlevoix, Michigan, as well as Toledo, Ohio and Chicago, Illinois. In addition, Bay Breeze Yacht Charters out of Traverse City has become a representative and has a Glacier Bay 2770 available for demonstration and charter. As the dealer network has grown, catamaran boats have sold well as Great Lakes boaters discover the ride and comfort that Joe and Dave experienced with their own boats on Florida’s Gulf Coast.
Joe and Dave know that the catamaran ride is key to making boaters into “believers.” Accordingly, Great Lakes Power Cats and its dealers have demo boats of various sizes available in the Michigan ports of Traverse City, Hessel, Grand Haven and St. Clair Shores. The group is continuing to expand the dealer and representative network, looking for top dealers in Northern Wisconsin, the East shore of Michigan, Canada, and Lakes Erie and Ontario.
You can reach Great Lakes Power Cats at 1-877-292-6543. Visit them at www.greatlakespowercats.com or www.powercatgroup.com to learn more about the cats or to schedule a sea trial.

What Choose
Sailing boat or Catamaran, what to sail in Lake Ontario
At Yachting.Rent, we want to make your sailing experience in Lake Ontario as perfect as possible. A crucial decision in this process is choosing the right type of vessel. In Lake Ontario, the main options are sailing boats and catamarans. Each has its own set of advantages and offers a unique sailing experience.
Sailing boats are traditional and offer an authentic sailing experience. If you are looking for a classic, hands-on sailing adventure, a sailing boat would be a great choice. The thrill of navigating using sails, feeling the wind and the waves directly under your feet, is something that purist sailors live for. Sailing boats are also an excellent choice for those wanting to improve their sailing skills. Additionally, the narrow hull design allows for easy docking at the numerous marinas around the lake.
Catamarans, on the other hand, provide a different kind of experience. Known for their stability, catamarans are perfect for those who prefer smoother, more relaxed sailing. Their dual-hull design provides excellent buoyancy, reducing the boat’s rocking motion, which is particularly beneficial for those prone to seasickness. Catamarans are also typically faster than monohull boats, making them a great choice for covering long distances quickly. Moreover, they offer more space, both above and below deck, allowing for better comfort and privacy, perfect for family or group trips.
The choice between a sailing boat and a catamaran will depend on your preferences, your sailing skills, and the type of sailing experience you’re after. Whatever your choice may be, Yachting.Rent provides a wide range of both sailing boats and catamarans, ensuring we have the perfect boat for your Lake Ontario adventure. Our knowledgeable team will guide you through the selection process, ensuring you make the best choice for your sailing needs. With Yachting.Rent, your dream sailing experience on Lake Ontario is just a reservation away.

Five things you need to know about Ontario’s 2024 budget
ANALYSIS: From nuclear power to a new planned med school, here’s what the Ford government has in store for the coming fiscal year
Written by John Michael McGrath
Mar 26, 2024
Finance Minister Peter Bethlenfalvy speaking at a press conference at Queen's Park on March 26. (John Michael McGrath)
Finance Minister Peter Bethlenfalvy will introduce a budget for the province of Ontario projecting a deficit that will yawn to $9.8 billion, about double what was projected in last year’s fall economic statement only 145 days ago. The reversal in government fortunes is even more stark compared to last year’s budget, which had projected a modest ($200 million) surplus.
Bethlenfalvy defended the government’s spending this afternoon before his speech to the legislature: “While this indeed leads to us a higher deficit than what we had projected last year, it is temporary, while the return on our investments will remain for much longer.”

The government is now projecting that the province’s books will return to balance by the 2026-27 fiscal year — just as it returns to the voters for a re-election campaign.
This year’s budget, like any budget, is the sum of both the government’s revenues and its expenses, and the coming deficit is the result of both unexpected changes in expenses and lower revenues. Here’s what you need to know.
Interest rates and the economic slowdown
The biggest single driver of the change in Ontario’s finances is the economic slowdown caused, in large measure, by the interest-rate hikes from the Bank of Canada. The government is projecting only 0.3 per cent economic growth in the coming year — very near, but not quite meeting, the technical definition of a recession. With a slowdown in economic growth, the government has revised its projected income and sales-tax revenues.
Government spending, however, is continuing to grow at an annual rate of 2.4 per cent over the planning period provided by the government. The relative good news is that the government is projecting economic growth, and thus revenues, to start recovering substantially in later years. While government revenue is projected to increase only $1.4 billion in the coming year, that number jumps by more than $10 billion in 2025 and a further $9 billion in 2026.
Total program spending is projected to increase overall by $8.3 billion between 2024 and 2026: in effect, Bethlenfalvy and the government are projecting that, with some spending restraint ( though less than they used to advocate ), the budget will come to balance with a surge in revenues. The modest surplus projected for 2026 — only $500 million — is small enough that, if the current projections are correct, the government won’t have much room for election-season generosity: something like the “temporary” cut to provincial gas taxes (which has already been renewed multiple times) already costs the province more than $1 billion annually.
Ontario’s colleges will miss those foreign students
One of the other changes in the province’s spending is the changes to foreign-student rules imposed by the federal government as a reaction to the surge in student numbers in recent years. The change in federal policy, not anticipated at the time of the fall economic statement, is going to cost the province $1.4 billion in 2024 and a further $1.7 billion in 2025.
Ontario’s colleges and universities have warned that many are looking at a year of financial distress as the source of lucrative foreign dollars dries up. The government had already announced measures to try to stabilize the post-secondary sector, and they’re reiterated in the budget: $903 million for a Postsecondary Education Sustainability Fund, as well as other smaller measures targeted at the postsecondary sector. In total, the government says it plans to spend $1.3 billion while continuing to freeze tuitions for Ontario students.
Changes to the province’s Green Bond program
Since 2014, Ontario has issued “green bonds” as part of its general debt-management plan. The policy, introduced under then-premier Kathleen Wynne, gives the province access to lower interest rates for debt that can be tied specifically to environmentally targeted projects. In the past, that’s included sustainable-energy and transit programs. But now Ontario is adding another category to its Green Bonds (and renaming them while we’re at it): nuclear power. The province will include its new nuclear-power projects — such as the small modular reactors at Darlington and the proposed expansion of the Bruce nuclear-power station — in its next “Ontario Sustainable Bond Framework.”
The addition of nuclear power to the category doesn’t fundamentally alter the financial relationship between the government and the nuclear-power sector: Ontario Power Generation, the owner of the Darlington and Bruce sites, is a Crown corporation whose debts are already ultimately accounted for in the province’s consolidated financial statements.
A new med school at York University (eventually)
Ontario is suffering a dire shortage of family doctors, and the government is proposing to address that shortage with a few measures in this year’s budget. It’s increasing the funding for family health teams by $546 million, building on $100 million announced earlier this year. In total, the government says it’ll be able to connect 600,000 patients with new family doctors.
In order to ensure that there are actual doctors to see them, however, the government also announced that it’s supporting the creation of a new medical school at York University that will specialize specifically in the training of family doctors. The province will contribute $9 million to early planning costs to get the medical school started, but Ontario is certainly several years away from York University graduating its first class of family doctors.
Ontario’s infrastructure bank gets closer to reality
Announced in last November’s fall economic statement, the province’s infrastructure bank — a complement to a similar federal agency — is a bit closer to reality. In the legislation Bethlenfalvy will introduce with Tuesday’s budget plan, the government is formally establishing the Building Ontario Fund as an arm’s-length Crown agency with the goal of using public funds to entice large institutional investors such as pension funds to invest in public infrastructure. Among the types of projects the government cites as examples the BOF could invest in are student housing, long-term-care homes, and municipal infrastructure.

Travel, power impacts likely in Ontario with messy spring storm
A potent spring storm will likely cause travel headaches for Ontario motorists on Wednesday and Thursday, thanks to a blast of blustery winds, drenching rains and a swath of heavy snow
April's first storm began to make its presence felt in Ontario Tuesday, and will only worsen with stronger impacts on Wednesday and Thursday.
The hazard-loaded storm will be bringing a barrage of effects including heavy rainfall, intense wind gusts and a round of hefty snowfall for some.
DON'T MISS: Canada faces a fickle April as winter wanes and summer teases
Special weather statements and snowfall warnings line much of Ontario, advising of the impacts, including travel and power disruptions, and a potential for localized flooding from the rainfall. Consider modifying travel plans to avoid the worst of the impacts.
Intensifying winds through Wednesday could result in localized tree damage and power outages. Ensure your devices are charged.
Wednesday into Thursday: Heavy rain persists with a gradual transition over to snow
The greatest impacts from this messy setup will likely be felt on Wednesday as our first storm continues, and our second low-pressure system ramps up.
The rain will become quite heavy Wednesday morning, from the Greater Toronto Area (GTA) and north towards cottage country. Thunderstorms are also possible across southern and eastern Ontario, including the GTA.
Rain will move into eastern Ontario in the later morning or early-afternoon hours as snow falls in the Algonquin Highlands. Some higher elevations on the escarpment, north of the city, will start to transition to snow in the afternoon.
Between 30-60 mm of rain is forecast for the hardest-hit areas, which could result in some localized flooding. There won't be a widespread flood threat this time around, due to the lack of snowpack and lower than normal precipitation this past winter.
Wind gusts will also remain high for the GTA, central, eastern, and northeastern Ontario through Wednesday. They will gradually subside for southwestern areas.
For some areas, this will be a long-duration snowfall that’ll unfold through much of Wednesday and Thursday.
Temperatures will fall as the storm pulls in colder air from the north, and we’ll see the rain transition to wet snow across higher terrain, with a heavy band of accumulating, wet snow across northeastern and eastern Ontario.
Periods of wet snow will fill in across GTA and the south through the overnight hours, with all of the south transitioning to wet snow by Thursday morning. However, it will slowly ease through the day.
Accumulating snow is possible for higher elevations near Orangeville, Shelburne, and the Waterloo region, with between 5-15 cm likely there.
Cottage country and eastern Ontario appear to be facing the heaviest snow threat with this system, but where exactly the axis of heaviest snow develops will determine which areas see the greatest accumulations. Temperatures will also play a role.
The Algonquin Highlands and parts of central Ontario could see 15-30 cm of snow, with as much as 10-20 cm of snow possible for eastern Ontario, including Ottawa and Cornwall. Periods of snow may move back in Friday for eastern Ontario, as well.
Expect blustery and chilly conditions for a couple days as the system slowly departs the region, then a warming trend into the weekend with temperatures climbing well above seasonal.
Forecasters will continue to monitor conditions ahead of the total solar eclipse that’ll traverse the region on Monday, April 8.

Today’s deal comes in as a 51% markdown off the going rate, beating our previous mention by $267 and marking a new all-time low. You’ll also find the red model currently going for $1,326.96 shipped , and the jet black model going for $1,981.51 shipped .

It typically takes seven to eight hours to fully charge, and the battery is removable from the body for more convenient charging. Its 20-inch fat tires help you traverse uneven terrain, and it has been outfitted with a headlight, taillight, and turn signals. It also comes decked out in an array of accessories: dual side mirrors, a phone storage bag, side and rear racks, two saddle bags, a rear mudguard, a triangular storage bag, and a folding lock. Global Affairs Canada says email is down as storm hits Ontario, Quebec
An April storm has not only cancelled flights, closed schools and shut off power for hundreds of thousands in Ontario and Quebec, it also has hit Global Affairs Canada's email.
In a statement Thursday, GAC said its email is down due to a power outage caused by the storm.
"Weather conditions and equipment failure have caused a power outage at one of our Data Centres in the National Capital Region and is disrupting access to some services, including email services," GAC said in a statement.
"GAC is working with its IT partners to restore all services as soon as possible. It should be noted that this is not linked to a cyber threat."
The storm is causing disruptions in Ontario and Quebec .
Hydro-Québec reported upwards of 280,000 customers were without power as of 9 a.m. Eastern Thursday, with affected areas ranging from near Gatineau to Montreal’s eastern suburbs.
The storm is expected to bring up to 20 centimetres of snow to several parts of Quebec by the evening, according to Environment Canada.

In Ontario, the spring storm brought high winds and downed power lines and trees. Hydro One says 59,000 of its customers have no electricity.
Several schools in Montreal, including the English Montreal School Board and Lester B. Pearson School Board, were closed for the day. Other school boards in southern Quebec closed individual schools that didn’t have electricity.
“Snow will be heavy and wet at times as temperatures will remain near the freezing mark,” Environment Canada said in a warning. “Wet snow combined with northeast winds reaching up to 70 km/h are leading to locally reduced visibilities.”
In Montreal, many arrivals and departures were either delayed or cancelled at the Trudeau airport. City crews were also forced to quickly adapt to the blast of snowy weather and pivot from springtime street cleaning.
A handful of flights connecting travellers between Montreal and Toronto were cancelled, Toronto Pearson Airport said.
