San Diego Yacht Club’s Biennial Race to the Mexican Mainland

San Diego Yacht Club is proud to host the 2024 Vallarta Race with the 1,000nm course from San Diego to Puerto Vallarta, Mexico. Racing to the Mexican mainland is a tradition for SDYC going back to 1953.

VALLARTA RACE NEWS

sailboat racing san diego

A lot of sailors would suggest that it’s ‘when’ you start that matters, the earlier the better. Others would insist that it’s the weather on your start day that matters most, the windier the better. Both are logical and have been true separately and combined. But what if NEITHER mattered?

Not many (any?) spectators on Shelter Island watching the Saturday starters for the the 2024 San Diego to Puerto Vallarta International Yacht Race would have speculated that seven of the boats floating in the windless bay that afternoon would fill the top seven overall finishing positions! They were already 48 hours behind the two Thursday starters blasting down the course in a fresh westerly wind. But after a week of many sail changes, cursing grib files, running weather models, and pressing the boat when the ‘park up’ (sitting ‘parked’ in becalmed windless conditions) was over, that is exactly what the results reflect.

sailboat racing san diego

Looking ahead to Wednesday night’s racing, it appears as if the wind will hold up overnight and allow the fleet to press to finish: the way it should be. There is traditionally a day or two of light winds in this race. This year, they came at the beginning of the race. Fortunately, ideal downwind race conditions have turned the race around for the 20 boats still on the course.

Pyewacket looms as the projected corrected-time leader despite the majority of the fleet sailing out ahead of them, leaving little room for error for those vying for the title. Two weeks ago, BadPak sailed an impeccable Islands Race, winning with Pyewacket 2nd overall. This week, Pyewacket looks to pay it back and will have the final 200 miles to set the pace. Also in contention is Rio100 with their Wednesday morning finish establishing the time to beat. Vitesse and Peligroso also rank in the top 5 and will have a chance at the overall win.

sailboat racing san diego

Rio100 used a strong last 24 hours to be first to finish in the 2024 PV Race, crossing the line at 07:36:25 Wednesday morning for an elapsed time of 3 days, 19 hours, 16 minutes, 25 seconds. In addition to their first to finish result, Rio100 has set the corrected time to beat. Based on predictions from recent progress on the course this time has a chance to be competitive against the rest of the fleet who still have a day of racing + to go. Rio100 has raced to PV 3 previous times, in 2016 (16th overall), 2018 (9th overall), and 2022 (9th overall). Could this be the year where the accolades include corrected time success in addition to elapsed time elite preformance?

Daily 0800 Projected Standings

Projected contenders this morning include Lucky Duck, Peligroso, BadPak and Pyewacket with estimated corrected times right around Rio's mark. BadPak and Peligroso remain within a few miles of each other and will likely eat up the miles between them and Lucky Duck 40+ miles ahead on the last leg of the race. While Pyewacket will sail in different conditions 60+ miles behind the other top contenders leaving lots of room for gains or losses along the way meaning this race is up for grabs and should have an exciting finish.

Competitors in the 2024 San Diego to Puerto Vallarta International Yacht Race are approaching a classic tactical waypoint while negotiating the Baja Peninsula. Boats will gamble on sailing fewer miles by hugging the Baja coast or bearing away to the south, hoping to avoid getting stuck in the lee of Cabo San Lucas and the surrounding Baja headlands.

Rio100 finally powered up, showing teens on the speedo at sunrise on Tuesday morning. And as the first to reach the Cabo milestone at 1000 PST, Rio100 consistently sailed 18-20 kts throughout the day Tuesday, swinging just 14 miles offshore from Cabo and then gybing south nearly 60 miles. With the speed boost, Rio put 70 miles on their nearest competitor Blackwing, who passed 26 miles off of Cabo 7 hours later on Tuesday afternoon.

sailboat racing san diego

Most boats on the course are about 24 hours behind last year’s record-setting pace. Compared with their 2022 position at this same elapsed time, Rio 100 and BadPak are roughly 200 miles short. Such Fast , a Thursday starter, is about 140 miles short of last year’s Monday morning location.

sailboat racing san diego

The 2024 edition of the San Diego to Puerto Vallarta International Yacht Race features a staggered start so the smaller boats can sail their best race and hopefully finish within a day or two of the larger, presumably faster boats.

With the Thursday starters from division ORR 6 sailing about 140nm on their initial 24 hours down the course, Friday saw divisions ORR 5 and ORR 4 start in what amounted to a ‘fair’ breeze. While the forecasts called for mostly calm with some models even suggesting a southeast wind (which would mean upwind sailing) a modest 5-8 kts from the west showed up in the harbor to move both fleets smartly out of San Diego harbor and into a building westerly for the rest of their run for the day.

The biennial San Diego to Puerto Vallarta International Yacht Race started in 1953, and returns for the 37th running February 22 - March 1, 2024. Sailors have been racing to the Mexican mainland for decades in San Diego Yacht Club’s signature offshore race for the on-water adventure and competition, and the tropical winter weather awaiting them in PV. Twenty two boats are set to compete in this year’s 1000nm race from the start line in San Diego Bay to the entrance of Banderas Bay in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico.

The race officially begins Thursday, February 22 with Class 6 boats Blackwing (Grand Soleil 44 Race) and Such Fast (1D35) squaring off as the first two starters of the race. These two will get a 24 hour and 48 hour head start over the rest of the fleet starting on Friday and Saturday. In 2022, the Thursday starters remained ahead of the later starters for the first three days of racing before the bigger and faster boats caught them at just past the halfway mark of the race. David Garman is racing his 1D35 Such Fast out of Seattle in his third straight PV Race, eager to escape the winter weather for warmer San Diego and tropical conditions in PV. Garman’s adventure won’t stop after the PV Race. He’ll be competing in MEXORC in Banderas Bay before solo sailing his boat up the Gulf of California for a few weeks.

The San Diego Yacht Club (SDYC) is thrilled to announce the upcoming 37th edition of the Puerto Vallarta Race, a biennial international offshore yacht race, set to take place from February 22 to March 1, 2024. With a rich history dating back to 1953, the race has evolved into a premier event attracting the best offshore sailors, featuring a challenging 1,000 nautical mile course from San Diego, CA to the vibrant shores of Puerto Vallarta, Mexico.

J/125 ARGO 4 WINS THE 2024 CA OFFSHORE RACE WEEK

Congratulations to Kenny Kieding and John Vincent, and the crew of Argo 4, winners of the CA Offshore Race Week series. Argo 4 won their class in two of the races, and finished 2nd in the third in a dominant week of sailing.

CALIFORNIA OFFSHORE RACE WEEK NEWS

sailboat racing san diego

The 2024 CA Offshore Race Week featured 90 boats and over 400 sailors racing throughout the three events of the series which is in its 8th year, annually occurring around Memorial Day Weekend.

John Brynjolfsson (TP52, Saga) described the race experience best saying, “Few experiences can rival the thrill of sailing with Saga's seasoned crew under the iconic Golden Gate Bridge, alongside a fleet of fellow sailors embarking on a week-long, 500-mile odyssey. This historic week comprised the storied Spinnaker Cup from StFYC to MPYC, the Coastal Cup from MPYC to SBYC, and the SoCal 300 from SBYC to SDYC. As the fog lifted outside San Francisco, and the flood tide lay behind us, the fleet converged down the coast on Monterey, our first port of call. A welcome break and authentic eateries awaited our courageous crew.

sailboat racing san diego

The 2024 California Offshore Race Week (CORW) is here and the excitement is buzzing. The series includes three separate races down the coast from San Francisco to San Diego. The first leg starts off with the Spinnaker Cup, San Francisco to Monterey (84 nm), then the Coastal Cup from Monterey to Santa Barbara (205 nm), and finally the SoCal 300 from Santa Barbara to San Diego (255 nm).

In 2023, the CORW saw the smallest boat in the fleet, Marc-Andrea Klimaschewski's Dogpatch 26 Moonshine, achieve an impressive overall victory. Klimaschewski and his crew, representing the Pacific Northwest, navigated challenging conditions and enjoyed the thrill of the SoCal 300 segment. The event also highlighted notable performances from other competitors, including the Express 37s dominating the Spinnaker Cup and the MOD 70s in the CA 500 race.

Dave MacEwen and Jeff Thorpe  will offer a briefing on Spinnaker Cup preparations, tactics, weather routing and safety requirements at MPYC  on  April 9 starting at 530pm .  This briefing is highly recommended for all skippers and crew who are planning to race in the upcoming 2024 Spinnaker Cup, or simply dreaming of doing the race someday. It would also be of interest to other racers and non-racers alike, including Spinnaker Cup volunteers.

The smallest boat takes the Series again. The 2023 California Offshore Race Week has concluded with Marc-Andrea Klimaschewski's Dogpatch 26 Moonshine, the smallest boat in the fleet, earning the title of overall CORW winner. For the second year in a row, the little boat makes a big splash.

Klimaschewski said "All of us are very happy about the great result and we are proud to be representing the Pacific Northwest and following in the footsteps of our good friends on Pell Mell who won the series last year in another small, wooden boat. Being a small boat, we always try minimizing our distance sailed. We also push the boat as hard as we can, the sails and loads are very manageable so if we overdo it on the gas pedal, that's usually an easy fix."

All it took was a year of elbow grease and a little bit of TLC for Alex Simanis to get his newly restored Pt Bonita 27, Pell Mell , back into the water… and titled a winner. The smallest boat on the course for the duration of the 2022 California Offshore Race Week has proved that it is heart and skill that gets you first overall, not size. Simanis’ Pell Mell is the official winner of not just the SoCal 300, but the overall series winner of CORW.

Simanis commented, “The Spinnaker Cup was epic. We stuck with our plan of staying out and waiting for the new breeze to come - and it worked out well. The last 50 miles we did in about 6 hours and we came into Monterey on a nice angle and 25+ knots of breeze. For the SoCal 300, it was a beautiful jib reach to the islands. We thought it was going to be game on, but it was really light. We got stuck in the island and had to battle back and forth to find a lane. A bunch of the fleet moved more to the west and we ended up sneaking towards more of the east breeze that filled in. We were able to catch up to the 1D35 and J/111 and the bigger boats for the run. Our boat is pretty quick on the run, so nobody got away from us.”

sailboat racing san diego

On Saturday May 28th, 30 boats departed San Francisco on the 1st leg of the California Offshore Race Week, The Spinnaker Cup, 86 miles of downhill fun, from San Francisco to Monterey. In the midst and in the mist, an improbable contestant, that had been ignored, more than it had been sailed recently and much less raced. Originally built in the mid 80's by Dave Sutter, the Point Bonita 27' Pell Mell was designed to be more of a cruiser, with inspiration from the Dogpatch 26, without the hard chines below the waterline. Her ample room below decks makes things more comfortable for a midget distance racing ride.

Sailing World Regatta Series moves west

Published on March 22nd, 2022 by Editor -->

The second event of the Helly Hansen Sailing World Regatta Series moves west as 14 division get ready for racing on March 25-27 in San Diego, CA. Over 100 entrants from nine different states as well as Mexico will compete in an array of keelboat and dinghy classes.

“San Diego has such a unique and vibrant sailing scene, which is why this regatta has been so popular for so long,” said Dave Reed, Sailing World Magazine’s editor in chief. “The ability for us to have reliable racing conditions on the bay and in the open ocean is what local and visiting teams appreciate. Our hosts at Coronado and San Diego yacht clubs always deliver a high-quality experience—on and off the water.”

Racing kicks off March 25 with the regatta’s smaller boats, which will be spread across two racecourses set on South San Diego Bay. The bigger boats will take to the ocean off Point Loma on March 26-27 and the North Sails Rally Race will send competitors on a low-key day-long course inside the bay on March 26 only.

Competing on the South Bay circle will be the Flying Dutchman class boats, the 20-foot two-person dinghy once used in Olympic competition nearly 60 years ago. The Flying Dutchman will share one of the South Bay racecourses with Formula 18 Catamarans and International 14s, which will be racing as individual classes.

sailboat racing san diego

“It’s been years since the area has hosted such a fleet of Flying Dutchman,” says Doug Dommermuth, who sails his FD out of nearby Mission Bay. “We love sailing on South Bay. The winds are consistent and with the short chop it’s a beautiful area to sail a Flying Dutchman.”

The high-tech International 14s have become a fixture of the San Diego regatta’s South Bay action. The double-trapeze dinghies do not require much wind to race at full-speed. Skippers and their crews are devoted to the care and maintenance of these crafts, which have been refined for more than a century and are now almost one-design (alike).

The 2022 edition of the Helly Hansen Sailing World Regatta in San Diego also marks the return of the Ultimate 20 class. Often referred to as the original sport boat, U20s are lightweight, sporty and trailerable keelboats. The U20s simplistic layout and handling makes it an ideal entry-level race boat and all except one team will travel from out of state to enjoy the ideal racing conditions of South Bay.

One of the larger fleets at the regatta will be the J/24s. Featuring mostly vintage boats from the late 1970s and early 1980s, the class has nearly tripled in entries from last year’s San Diego event.

The J/105 division winner in 2021 was decided by a mere three points at the end of the five-race series, with local skipper Stewart  Cannon’s J-OK (a three-time champion at the regatta) emerging as the top team. With decades of experience racing off Point Loma, Cannon and crew have mastered racing in the ocean swells. “It can be challenging conditions—especially when the big swells are running,” Cannon says. “Part of that is the difficulty of driving in it.”

The J/70 fleet this regatta in San Diego is comprised of entirely West Coast boats, including two from Mexico. Among the entry list of skippers is National Sailing Hall of Fame inductee, Dave Ullman, who has been racing in the area for over 50 years.

When the San Diego Regatta wraps up on March 27, one class-winning competitor will be chosen to compete in the Helly Hansen Sailing World Caribbean Championship in October in the British Virgin Islands.

The U.S. Women's National Team took home the gold medal, beating Brazil 1-0 in the final soccer match at the Paris Olympics on Saturday.

Among those winners is San Diego Wave FC player Naomi Girma. She is also the first-ever player of Ethiopian descent to play for the USWNT.

The ladies took Team USA to their first Olympic championship in 12 years.

🥇 Jaedyn Shaw - Women's soccer

sailboat racing san diego

Although San Diego Wave FC player Jaedyn Shaw didn't play in Saturday's victorious game, she's still on the winning U.S. Women's National Team, so she earned an Olympic gold medal.

🥈 Brooke Raboutou - Sport climbing

Silver medalist Brooke Raboutou kisses her medal

While not from San Diego, Brooke Raboutou was educated in America's Finest City. University of San Diego alum Raboutou claimed the silver medal in sport climbing’s boulder and lead event at the 2024 Paris Olympics.

She made history becoming the first American woman to medal in the sport. It's the second medal in sport climbing for Team USA.

Janja Garnbret, the Slovenian who won the combined gold when sport climbing made its Olympic debut at the Tokyo Games three years ago, hugged the silver medalist and cried together in joy after the final.

The USD alum has been climbing since the age of 2, with a pedigree in climbing —  both her parents were world champion climbers in the 90s.

🥉 Alex Bowen - Santee

sailboat racing san diego

The U.S. men's water polo team beat Hungary in the bronze medal match with a penalty shootout victory with a score by Santee native Alex Bowen.

It's the three-time Olympian's first medal. The 2011 graduate of Santana High School attended Stanford University where he scored more than 200 goals.

With an 8-8 tied score, Team USA entered a penalty shootout. Hannes Daube, Max Irving and Bowen scored for the U.S., while Hungary was unable to score on any of its three attempts.

The bronze is Team USA's 10th ever medal in Olympic men's water polo, second all-time behind Hungary's 16. The team had not medaled at the Olympics since losing the gold medal match to Hungary and settling for silver at the 2008 Beijing Games.

🥉 Garrett Muagututia - Men's volleyball

Team United States Athletes celebrate

The U.S. men’s volleyball secured bronze in a 3-0 win over Italy. The Americans won 25-23, 30-28, 26-24. The result is reassuring for the U.S. after a disappointing trip to the Tokyo Olympics, where they were eliminated in pool play.

The team included Oceanside volleyball player Garrett Muagututia, who attended Francis Parker High School. His dad was a U.S. Navy SEAL and played volleyball for the U.S. Navy team. He was also an Olympian, competing in the two-man bobsled event for American Samoa at the 1994 Winter Olympics in Lillehammer, Norway.

Since winning their last gold medal in Beijing in 2008, the Americans have two medals (bronze in Rio and Paris) in their last four Olympics.

🥇 Kelsey Plum - Women’s basketball

sailboat racing san diego

USA women’s basketball eked out a 67-66 win against France to win its eighth consecutive Olympic gold medal in Paris.

Kelsey Plum, a Poway native, scored 12 points to help the US win over France.

As a collegiate athlete for Washington, Plum held the record for most points scored in NCAA women's basketball before  Caitlin Clark broke it  in February.

🥈 Nevin Harrison - Canoe Single 200m

American canoeist  Nevin Harrison , who lives in San Diego and attended San Diego State, was attempting to repeat as Olympic champion in the women's C-1 200m sprint.

But Harrison's repeat bid was denied by Canada's  Katie Vincent , who beat out the reigning champ by 0.1 seconds with a world-record time of  44.12 seconds . Harrison's second-place time was 44.13 — significantly better than the 45.93 she posted when she won the inaugural event at the  Tokyo Games  at age 19.

The event ended in a photo finish that left Harrison with a silver medal.

🥇🥇 Jennifer Valente - Women's cycling, track team pursuit

sailboat racing san diego

The United States won its first Olympic gold in the women's team pursuit cycling event. It's the 2nd gold for Scripps Ranch native Jennifer Valente, and fourth overall.

The U.S. beat New Zealand around the velodrome (that's cycling speak for a banked indoor track) in the gold medal match, putting up a final time of 4 minutes, 4 seconds over the race's 4 kilometers.

Valente was part of the bronze-winning team in Tokyo.

She then won her second gold of the game in the women's omnium to defend.

🥈 Tom Schaar - Park skateboarding

The skateboarder from Encinitas is taking home the silver in the men's park event. The 24-year-old earned a 92.23 on his second run, the highest of his three runs to take home his first Olympic medal.

Tate Carew, who went to Point Loma High School in San Diego, came in 5th place with a high score of 91.17.

Carew's best friend Gavin Bottger, of Oceanside, did not advance past the preliminary round.

🥇 Keegan Palmer - Park skateboarding (Australia)

sailboat racing san diego

Australia's Keegan Palmer, the defending champion from the Tokyo Games was born in San Diego before his family moved to Australia. Pictured above in the center, he maintains his title with another gold win with a top score of 93.11.

Brazil's Augusto Akio wins the bronze with 91.85.

🥉 Taylor Fritz - Tennis

Team USA earned another spot on the podium for men’s doubles tennis as Tommy Paul and San Diego County native Taylor Fritz (pictured on the left above) clinched the bronze win on Saturday.

Originally from Rancho Santa Fe, Fritz now lives in in Los Angeles and the Paris 2024 Olympics is his first Olympics experience.

🥉 U.S. Women's Rugby team

The United States celebrates its bronze medal during the women's rugby sevens medal ceremony at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games at Stade de France.

The U.S. women's rugby team , which trains at the Chula Vista Elite Athlete Training Center, had a  historic win beating Australia with a game-winning conversion to secure team USA its first-ever  Olympic rugby sevens medal .

Team USA's defense held strong early in the second half, holding the score to 7-7 until there was 1:25 remaining. In a photo finish, Alex Sedrick scored a try and hit the game-winning conversion on the final play to give Team USA a 14-12 victory over Australia.

Following the win, businesswoman Michele Kang announced a $4 million donation  over four years for the team's future.

sailboat racing san diego

The U.S. men's skiff team is made of Ian Barrows and Hans Henken, who has a long history with the Coronado Yacht Club.

The pair won bronze with 88 points at the Paris Olympics, behind Spain and New Zealand. It was the first sailing medal for Team USA since 2016.

🥈🥉 Brady Ellison - Archery

Team USA's Casey Kaufhold and Brady Ellison pose with bronze medals

Brady Ellison, who has lived and trained in Chula Vista off-and-on, made his fifth Olympic appearance.

He and his mixed team pair Casey Kaufhold beat India, 6-2, to win the bronze medal in the mixed team archery competition.

In the individual competition , Ellison was less than five millimeters away from his first Olympic gold. In a winner-take-all fifth set, Ellison and South Korea's Kim Woo-jin shot a perfect 30 to send the match to a  single, decisive shot . Ellison's shot was just a sliver further away from the very center if the target, cementing silver for the U.S. athlete.

It's Ellison's fourth and fifth Olympic medals — he's previously won two silvers and a bronze. It's the first Olympic medal for Kaufhold, the top-ranked women's archer in the world entering these games.

🥈 Jagger Eaton - Street skateboarding

sailboat racing san diego

The Encinitas local upgraded to silver at the 2024 Paris Olympics. Following the competition, Eaton told NBC 7 he wouldn't "be have been where he is "wouldn't be the skater I am without living in San Diego."

Eaton, a Tokyo Olympics bronze medalist, finished with a 281.04 total score in the final, putting him just one-tenth of a point behind Japan's Yuto Horigome, who successfully defended his gold medal.

🥈 Shanieka Ricketts - Triple Jump (Jamaica)

Athletics - Olympic Games Paris 2024: Day 8

San Diego State Alum Shanieka Ricketts secured her first Olympic medal representing Jamaica at the 2024 Paris Olympics.

Rickets lept 14.61m in her first jump, 14.87m in her second and secured top eight after three more attempts, SDSU Athletics said. On her final jump, she went 14.73m and secured a spot on the podium.

🥇 Caroline Marks - Women's surfing

sailboat racing san diego

While not technically a San Diegan, surf culture is so Southern California that we can claim Orange County surfer Caroline Marks as one of our own, right?

Marks, the reigning world champion, secured gold in the  waters off the coast of Teahupo'o, Tahiti , triumphing over Brazilian Tatiana Weston-Webb with a score of 10.50 following days of weather delays. It was her first medal after missing the podium in Tokyo.

Marks, who hails from Melbourne Beach, Florida and now lives in San Clemente, California,  shared her excitement before the final round , already knowing she'd be going home with a medal -- the only question remaining what color.

"I’m so happy. It feels so good … I was really emotional about not medalling in Tokyo, so I’m going to stop talking now because I’ll get emotional now that I know I’m going to get one," Marks said to Olympics. com after advancing to the gold medal final. "I sliced my foot a few times on the reef, so I’m glad it worked out. I’m just so happy. Best feeling ever — such a big heat. I’ve had some big moments in my career and that win felt pretty big. Stoked I got the score."
