The San Juan 24

A fast quarter-tonner that can still compete in phrf, but numerous problems with construction quality would steer us elsewhere..

In the late 1960s and early 1970s, the Clark Boat Co. jumped on the trailer sailer bandwagon, and became a successful player in this decade-long market. Earlier, Bob and Carol Clark built Lightnings and ThistIes, and later, with the business in the hands of their son Don, the company built boats as large as 34 feet. The last boats came out of the shop in 1986, the year the company went out of business.

While the San Juan 21 trailer sailer really established the Clark Boat Co., it was the more performance-oriented boats such as the San Juan 24 and 7.7 that gave it the reputation of a successful builder of faster, under-3D-foot boats.

Auxilary power, accomodations, calculations.

The theoretical maximum speed that a displacement hull can move efficiently through the water is determined by it's waterline length and displacement. It may be unable to reach this speed if the boat is underpowered or heavily loaded, though it may exceed this speed given enough power. Read more.

Classic hull speed formula:

Hull Speed = 1.34 x √LWL

Max Speed/Length ratio = 8.26 ÷ Displacement/Length ratio .311 Hull Speed = Max Speed/Length ratio x √LWL

Sail Area / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the power of the sails relative to the weight of the boat. The higher the number, the higher the performance, but the harder the boat will be to handle. This ratio is a "non-dimensional" value that facilitates comparisons between boats of different types and sizes. Read more.

SA/D = SA ÷ (D ÷ 64) 2/3

  • SA : Sail area in square feet, derived by adding the mainsail area to 100% of the foretriangle area (the lateral area above the deck between the mast and the forestay).
  • D : Displacement in pounds.

Ballast / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the stability of a boat's hull that suggests how well a monohull will stand up to its sails. The ballast displacement ratio indicates how much of the weight of a boat is placed for maximum stability against capsizing and is an indicator of stiffness and resistance to capsize.

Ballast / Displacement * 100

Displacement / Length Ratio

A measure of the weight of the boat relative to it's length at the waterline. The higher a boat’s D/L ratio, the more easily it will carry a load and the more comfortable its motion will be. The lower a boat's ratio is, the less power it takes to drive the boat to its nominal hull speed or beyond. Read more.

D/L = (D ÷ 2240) ÷ (0.01 x LWL)³

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds.
  • LWL: Waterline length in feet

Comfort Ratio

This ratio assess how quickly and abruptly a boat’s hull reacts to waves in a significant seaway, these being the elements of a boat’s motion most likely to cause seasickness. Read more.

Comfort ratio = D ÷ (.65 x (.7 LWL + .3 LOA) x Beam 1.33 )

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds
  • LOA: Length overall in feet
  • Beam: Width of boat at the widest point in feet

Capsize Screening Formula

This formula attempts to indicate whether a given boat might be too wide and light to readily right itself after being overturned in extreme conditions. Read more.

CSV = Beam ÷ ³√(D / 64)

Clark Boat Co. had previously built a number of One-Design Dinghy’s, but this was the first ‘SAN JUAN’ and a huge success. Designed displacement was 1250 lbs. but it was found that most ended up at 1400 lbs. Thanks to Samuel Tricky for providing corrected information for this and number of other boats in this category.

SanJuan 21 ~ Fleet 28

Glenmore Sailing Club ~ Calgary, AB, Canada

san juan sailboat review

The SanJuan 21

The SanJuan 21 sailboat is a one-design trailerable sailboat with a swing keel, typically raced with a crew of three.

These sailboats are inexpensive and fun. Competitive racing boats may cost around $5,000. Eventually skippers want new sails… and with a new suit of sails costing a couple grand they are the biggest cost of boat ownership. However that suit of sails on a SJ21 will easily be competitive for 5 plus years.

Relatively easy to sail (unlike say a planing or foiling dinghy) the SJ21 handles a lot like a dinghy.

Boats weigh only 1,400 pounds and are easily towed and launched. And they are remarkably stable. The fleet in Calgary typically sails with main sail, jib and spinnaker but the genoa in the right conditions really makes the boat move.

Owner Boat Reviews

Thoughts on the sanderling, pocketship, caledonia yawl, phoenix iii, and san juan 21.

We assumed, when surveying Small Craft Advisor readers about boats they own and enjoy sailing, that the responses would be dominated by maybe three dozen small-boat designs, so it was a shock when 346 readers shared their thoughts about more than 200 different designs!

As a result, with so many boats to consider, we’ve turned what might have been one summary article into a series of Owner Review features.

This time we feature six designs—four that can be home-built of wood, along with two older fiberglass production-boat designs…one that’s been available longer than almost any camp-cruising sailboat. —Eds

MARSHALL SANDERLING

A traditional-looking large-volume boat admired by SCA readers is the Marshall Sanderling, an 18-foot catboat—one of the oldest continuously produced fiberglass boats on the market, with more than 850 hulls finished by Marshall Marine since the start of production in 1962.

Like most catboat designs, the Sanderling offers a huge cockpit and roomy cabin when compared to most other daysailers and camp cruisers in the 18-foot range.

san juan sailboat review

With an overall length of 18'-2,"beam of 8'-6" and draft of 19” with the centerboard up and 4'-4" with the board down, the spacious Sanderling can daysail five or six comfortably, overnight or cruise a couple, and deal with almost all kinds of conditions.

, the 7.7 not too good to due to but a lot of for a trailerable . Sailing to is highly over rated... except for the fun of it! They were built up here nearby in the . I cant remember if they had another building plant in the east or not. Small run business. I used to on the SJ 21, 24, 28 and 30's.
Looking at your link, maybe I'm thinking of the SJ26, it's predecessor. It looks like the 7.7 has a bit deeper . Looks pretty good. Watch for toe rail , pretty common on many boats of that vintage with the toe rail extrusions, and the Clark boats were not without some. BIG job to fix. is it mildewed smelly below? Try to look at the after a good rain and look for drips inside. - Elmore Leonard

sell his here in WA so I was on his SJ28 quite a bit. We took her out for sea trials and a fast, sweet boat she turned out to be. One thing to look at closely is the decks - I know very little about but on this particular boat every stanchion wobbled and there was an area that canned on the bow. Could be a one off problem or possibly something particular to the manufacturer. I just don't have enough data. If helps at all, there was lots of interest but few offers over a 5 week period. He finally took $3500 for it, but he just wanted to get away from the .
Good luck.

Boat: 1979 San Juan 7.7M
to this thread, but I only just saw it. I happen to be the proud owner of a 1979 SJ 7.7. And I have to disagree with some of you about the production quality of these boats. At least in my experience. I have an toe rail (no , ever), my stanchions are firm and there are no soft or spongy spots in the , around the stanchions or elsewhere. It is true (due to the weight of the boat [ballast]) she doesn't go to weather well, but, she is built to handle the worst, better than most skippers who own them. I can attest to that as I have been through several really tough blows with her. so much so, that my bracket was broken from the buffeting she was taking. The only thing that saved my 4Stroke from being is that I had a cable attaching the to the rail and a cleat. She doesn't point well into the , but she makes reasonable headway close hauled. My model had holes in the for the shrouds to go through to "chain plates" mounted against the bulkhead behind the port and starboard settees. Since I sailed her year round, I had to pot these holes several times a season to keep rain etc. out. Later production boats, the went through the deck and shrouds attached outside. I learned about this 5 or 6 years ago and had mine replaced. Had them custom made and lazer cut to specs... no more potting. She's been Knocked down twice, to , never capsized, just rounded up through a 360 and kept going... scared the poop out me, but just another coin in the "confidence box". These are roomy boats for their class and my guests are always delightfully surprised upon entering the (5'8" tall or less), how deceptively roomy the inside is compared to the low profile and comparatively low freeboard, boy is she beamy!. While I don't , this boat was fleet champion 5 years in a row in the area. I have been this boat for over twenty years, with some custom renovations of course. Perfect for me, and comfortable for two *if you like each other*. not a lot of useful space as the boat was designed primarily for . But nothing a little creative genius couldn't cure. My only caveat would be to inspect your prospective vessel thoroughly before . All vessels are not created equal no matter the . Vessels are often abused, misused and neglected by their owners. Caveat emptor! I guess you can tell I like my ... I know this has been a little "Long winded", but let me close by saying I am now in Tennessee, and will be leaving to return to the via the Tennessee River, Tom Bigbee Waterway, to Corpus Christi, overland to Oceanside, Ca, Splashed, then up the coast to , . Outfitting now, departing prior to but not later than 31 March 2017. Stay tuned for regular updates once I'm underway! Fair Winds! Oh, one more thing, Once I'm back in the PNW, I plan to have her fitted with a shoe to deal with that nasty weather issue ;-) I hope this info has been of help to any who may be interested in this boat. I'm not the best sailor amongst ya, but she's pulled my plebe skivies out of hot water more times than I really care to admit or count. She's bred for that, very forgiving.

Your comments about going to and weather confused me though. Until you mentioned not having the shoe. Mine has it and I out point most other boats on our lake. We hold our own with speed as well.
The balance is so perfect that I won't feel any weather helm until past 35 degree heel, well past the need to reef.
We were surprised by a 40ish gust once in our first season with full up. She heeled to 45 then rounded up.
We didn't even get water in the .
The shrouds going through the deck is a pain, and I would love to see pictures of your solution.
I laughed where you commented on how beamy they are. One guy at my marina commented that it was wide enough to be a tug boat, and I should hang tires on it. Then out on the water, his 25 can't keep up:-) ( on any point of sail)
Damn, now I really want this snow to melt so I can go sailing

Thanks all, fair winds and have a happy and prosperous new year!

Review of San Juan 23

Basic specs..

The hull is made of fibreglass. Generally, a hull made of fibreglass requires only a minimum of maintenance during the sailing season. And outside the sailing season, just bottom cleaning and perhaps anti-fouling painting once a year - a few hours of work, that's all.

CentreBoard

The San Juan 23 is equipped with a centreboard keel. A centreboard keel is a pivoting lifting keel, allowing to sail both coastal and inland waters.

The boat can enter even shallow marinas as the draft is just about 0.58 - 0.68 meter (1.90 - 2.20 ft) dependent on the load. See immersion rate below.

Sailing characteristics

This section covers widely used rules of thumb to describe the sailing characteristics. Please note that even though the calculations are correct, the interpretation of the results might not be valid for extreme boats.

What is Theoretical Maximum Hull Speed?

The theoretical maximal speed of a displacement boat of this length is 6.0 knots. The term "Theoretical Maximum Hull Speed" is widely used even though a boat can sail faster. The term shall be interpreted as above the theoretical speed a great additional power is necessary for a small gain in speed.

The immersion rate is defined as the weight required to sink the boat a certain level. The immersion rate for San Juan 23 is about 101 kg/cm, alternatively 566 lbs/inch. Meaning: if you load 101 kg cargo on the boat then it will sink 1 cm. Alternatively, if you load 566 lbs cargo on the boat it will sink 1 inch.

Sailing statistics

This section is statistical comparison with similar boats of the same category. The basis of the following statistical computations is our unique database with more than 26,000 different boat types and 350,000 data points.

What is L/B (Length Beam Ratio)?

Maintenance

When buying anti-fouling bottom paint, it's nice to know how much to buy. The surface of the wet bottom is about 18m 2 (193 ft 2 ). Based on this, your favourite maritime shop can tell you the quantity you need.

San Juan 23

Hello, new to the forum, 1st post. I just bought this SJ23 1979, all is well with the boat, so far. My question is about the 2 cockpit drain holes, one appears to drain fine, the other not, if i put the hose on the one working the water doesn't back up, on the one not working (port side) water doesn't drain as quick (backs up with hose).... Is there an access point to these drains? Could the water be going in the hull? Recommendations? (not Drano) I haven't been able to find any drawings/plans/blueprints on this boat. Thank you in advance. Alex

No, yes, not Drano. There might be an obstruction, see if you can run a wire to clear it. I would also be wary of the one that drains real fast as that could be the one leaking into the hull. Crawling into a cockpit lazarette might allow inspection of the drain conduits under the cockpit sole.

Thanks Benny, I'll se what I can find.

Richard Bryer

Richard Bryer

If the drains (scuppers) are like my 24 had, they are straight down through the stern lazarette and out just under the water line. You may be able to see the obstruction with a light from the top. A straight iron rod might loosen it.

Thank you Richard, too bad there isn't an plumbing schematic on these boats

Sorry, Alexvw- my wording is not quite accurate- the tubes go down through the crawl space under the cockpit, not the lazarette.

Alex D

Hi, Any pictures on your boat I'm looking to buy a 1979 San Juan 23 any ideas or advice. I'm Boca Raton Fl. aadamiani@ gmail.com Thank you!

Good morning Alex D, I can't really give you a professional opinion, with that said, I've use the boat 5 times since purchase (July 2016, it seats at the St Cloud marina , and I sail on Lake Toho. The idea of purchase was to teach my kids about sailing, easy and quick access to it (instead of driving to the coast). So far the boat delivered , rigging is solid, maneuverability is good, I've single piloted this boat with no too much work (and I don't have a rolling furling for forward sail). The previous owner installed an electrical system with two batteries and a air conditioning (dock use only). It has the retractable Keel and Rudder, great for my area. It needs to have some hull Buffing (don't know how) and some other cosmetic stuff. Over roll I'm happy. Let me know how else I can help. Alex.

Great Thank you, happy sailing!

We were referred by a relative about this place. Called right away because my wife's vehicle was having a hard time turning on. Figured it was the starter. We called and got attended right away by Oscar the general manager and their awesome front desk receptionist. Oscar took care of us and did a diagnostic on the vehicle and gave us a review of everything he saw that needed urgency and things we didn't have to worry about yet. He was very honest and his entire staff was friendly and very attentive. They told us it was the starter and gave us a super fair deal and took care of our vehicle immediately. Thank you San Juan Complete Auto Service for taking care of my wife's vehicle. We will be back shortly for a tune up and we couldn't be any more happier with the quality of work and experience we had. These guys genuinely value their customers and their work and positive attitude are what make this place special. Highly recommend for any of your vehicle needs or questions about your vehicle!

Here is the business card from this amazing place with my wife's stunning Honda Accord. Wanted to show what vehicle they worked on.

If you want to get scammed & become financially ruined, this is the place to go. Was forced to bring my car here due to logistics. Oscar, the manager, basically told me my car required over $3,000 in damages and he even offered to buy my car. How sweet of him (NOT, how dare you?!). Especially since I need this very car to get TO MY JOB. To be transparent, I was devastated. I was able to get my car out of this rip off of a shop thankfully thanks to a friend who actually cares about me and knows I have no other means of support. Took it to MY mechanic. Know how much? $200. Needed ONE new part and that's it. How dare YOU tell my my engine is shot, how I needed all this excessive repair, etc. you have no heart, no soul. I don't know how you guys sleep at night knowing you are happy financially ruining peoples' lives. I hope you go out of business. If I could give negative stars, I would. Worst business I've ever had the displeasure of working with. DO NOT GO HERE THEY ONLY WANT YOUR MONEY. Jokes on you for thinking I knew nothing about cars too, btw. Please go touch grass. Disgusting. I make sure to tell everyone I meet not to come here. DO NOT GO HERE I CANNOT STRESS ENOUGH

Hello Tracy D. this is Oscar from San Juan Complete Auto service. I'm sorry my mechanic who had performed the inspection during that time wasn't able to properly figure out the problem. But I would never sell anything you don't need on your vehicle purposely or try and scam you in any way. On my records I show we recommended a transmission based on the symptoms the vehicle had which is also very common for the internal clutch to give out, which I also asked the dealer about. I do take full responsibility as this is not how we provide our service and I'm glad to hear it is now repaired as you mentioned. Give me a call when it's most convenient and will gladly give you a refund on the inspection performed. Thank you and sorry for the inconvenience , let me know if there is any way for us to provide any future service where you can regain our trust and help with anything moving forward.

Disneyland | disneyland’s new coco ride: 5 things you need to know, construction will begin in 2026 on the new attraction coming to disney california adventure..

san juan sailboat review

Construction will begin in 2026 on the new Coco boat ride coming to Disney California Adventure.

Here are five things you need to know about DCA’s new Coco ride.

A performer controls townspeople from Coco during A Musical Celebration of Coco at Disney California Adventure in Anaheim, CA, on Wednesday, Sep 12, 2018. The show features a troupe of singers, Folklórico dancers and Mariachi Divas. (Photo by Jeff Gritchen, Orange County Register/SCNG)

1) What’s the story behind the new Coco ride?

The 2017 Pixar animated film follows the journey of 12-year-old Miguel Rivera into the colorful Land of the Dead in search of his family’s true history. Along the way, Miguel meets the charming trickster Hector, famous musician Ernesto de la Cruz and deceased members of the Rivera family.

Concept art for the new Coco ride shows an eight-person boat gently traveling through a Mexican village beneath Papel Picado banners and exploding fireworks. Marigolds line the gunwale of the boat with a pink and blue Sugar Skull painted on the stern.

Walt Disney Imagineering will draw inspiration for the new Coco ride from classic Disney attractions like Pirates of the Caribbean and the Haunted Mansion.

2) Which characters will appear in the Coco ride?

“We’re bringing our skeletal cast of characters to life in a big way through the latest Audio-Animatronics technology,” Disney Parks Chairman Josh D’Amaro said during the D23 fan event . “These figures will appear in ways you’ll have to see to believe.”

Concept art shows Miguel and Hector atop a stage and Ernesto de la Cruz on a billboard advertising his Gran Concurso de Talento (Great Talent Show).

A skeleton mariachi band and folklorico dancers perform on the banks of the waterway.

A pair of rainbow-colored alebrijes spirit guides — Dante the bird-like dog and Pepita the lion-eagle — are also expected to make appearances in the ride.

3) What music will be featured in the new Coco ride?

Disneyland has announced the new Coco attraction will be filled with music you know and love from the animated film — without providing a song list for the ride.

ALSO SEE: Disney’s ‘most romantic’ ride is the hot spot for marriage proposals

There’s a good chance “Remember Me” will be part of the ride — especially after an Ernesto De La Cruz character sang the tune at the D23 Disney Parks event when the new attraction was announced.

Other songs from “Coco” have appeared in DCA attractions — including “Un Poco Loco” in a 2021 update to “Mickey’s PhilharMagic” and “Crossing The Marigold Bridge” in a 2023 update to “World of Color.”

4) Where will the new Coco ride be built?

The most logical place to build a new Pixar ride would be in DCA’s Pixar Pier. A few unused attraction pads lay beneath the Incredicoaster track.

A Coco themed land was teased as a potential DisneylandForward expansion project — suggesting the new attraction could be built in the parking lot south of the Pixar Place Hotel.

Disneyland has only announced the new Coco ride will be built in DCA — without providing specifics.

5) When will the Coco attraction open?

Disneyland has announced construction on the new Coco ride will begin in 2026 without setting an opening date.

A major Coco attraction built by Walt Disney Imagineering could take a year or two to open — likely slotting the ride into 2027 or 2028 on the Disneyland development calendar.

Thanks for taking the time….I had already looked at the sailboat data sight It had good numbers for sure. I was hoping to get a feel for known issues or repeated areas of concern. She’s over forty and I prefer to sail rather that repair as much as possible although I understand the nature of a boat in general. I found this sight and even it calls the 33S “a bit of a mystery”. http://www.sj21class.org/pdf/clark_boat.pdf . Thanks again

I have been handily passed by one on a 8-10 knot day. I was impressed. regards charlie PSC-34 Windrunner

The numbers on paper certainly bear this out. Thanks

Designed to be one design racer that was less than 8 foot beam so it could be trailered to different race locations without towing permits. Don’t think they sold many. Only built for a couple of years. Make a fun daysailer but very low resale value cheap to buy, hard so sell

👍🏻 Thanks

This was Dave Pedrick's attempt to one up the Tartan 10 after leaving S&S. These were lighter, had shallower draft, a bigger SA/D, were narrower than the Tartan 10 and had less form stability. But additional sail area and light weight only is useful in very light air, if the boat has enough stability to be able to stand up to its sail plan. Despite having a larger ballast ratio, the San Juan would tend to a have a lot less stability, This meant that the San Juan 33s would be faster in light air dead down wind than the Tartan 10, but that the Tartan 10 would be a faster and easier boat to sail in all other conditions. Boats like the 33s would tend to be one trick ponies designed to obsolete design concepts. They were quickly eclipsed first by boats like the Olsen 30's and then by more well rounded designs like the Mumm 30. Last year I helped a friend rebuilding a San Juan 30 (rotted bulkhead replacement, re-bedding and sealing deck leaks and so on. My friend also rebuilt the engine.) This was a more intimate view of Clark built boats than I had previously had. My sense is that these were simply built, performance oriented build quality boats. There was nothing on the boat that was not there to make it go. The glasswork and interior appointments were sturdy but crudely done. The gelcoat was in really rough shape and the deck cores were badly delaminated/rotted. My friend had been given that boat for free, but putting that boat back together cost pretty much what it was worth and maybe more. Boats like these are near impossible to resell. If you think that the boat is cheap enough (less than $5K), it absolutely suits your needs, it is in solid condition with good sails and a good engine, you sail in a venue where there is predominantly light winds and flat water, and you will keep the boat long enough (maybe 5-10 years) to be worth messing with, then this might be a reasonable boat to buy. Otherwise there are much nicer built and more rounded boats out there. Jeff

The SJ21 sails like a big dinghy & is best treated that way. Its sailplan is balanced, with slight lee helm in low winds and slight weather helm above 18 kts or 20 degrees of heel. The boat generally rounds up if overdriven. It prefers winds between 6-15kts and has a narrow groove of 10-15 degrees of heel.

The San Juan 21 (see feature review in SCA issue #22) is a popular class race boat (see www.sj21class.org), with overall sail area of 193 s.f., a SA-to-displacement rating of 26.66, overall length of 20'-6,"swing keel with minimal draft of 12," plunging to 4' with the centerboard down.
