Best Cruising Catamarans

  • By Cruising World Editors
  • Updated: July 1, 2021

Cruising catamarans have been around for decades, but early models—often plywood and fiberglass vessels built by their owners from plans and kits, kept the boats on the fringes of mainstream sailing. That all changed, though, as big roomy cats were discovered by sailors who went off to charter in the Caribbean, where the multihulls proved their worth as comfortable liveaboard and party boats.

Today’s bluewater catamarans roam the globe, carrying families to exotic destinations across the Pacific and beyond. Just as with their monohull cousins, there is no best catamaran. Instead there is a wide variety of designs, ranging from small catamarans that offer the ease of maintenance a couple might enjoy to performance catamarans capable of easily knocking off 250-mile days. Today, the best catamaran brands offer a range of size models and layouts that can be optimized for an owner sailing with family and friends, or for the charter market, where there’s a demand for four, five and even six cabins worth of accommodations.

The most prolific catamaran manufacturers are in France and South Africa where yards include both large-run production builders and niche companies building fewer than 10 boats a year.

The best cruising catamarans offer good load-carrying ability and respectable performance. As with any sailboat , a modern catamaran’s design is a result of compromises. Daggerboards or keels? Galley up or galley down? Spacious owner’s cabin or extra bunks? There are lots of options to choose from—and that’s what makes looking at these sailboats fun!

Here, then is an eclectic A to Z list of some of the best catamarans that have helped shaped the evolution of how we live and sail on two hulls.

Antares 44i

Now built in Argentina as a full-fledged, bluewater catamaran and cruiser that can be safely operated by a shorthanded couple or family crew, the Antares 44i features a fully covered cockpit with a quartet of big, standard solar panels recessed within the hardtop, one example of a yacht capable of long-range passagemaking.

Atlantic 42

Almost 30 years ago, yacht designer Chris White revolutionized catamaran design with the first in his series of Atlantic cats, the primary feature of which was the innovative mid-ship sailing cockpit forward of the main cabin. The smallest in the Atlantic line, the 42 remains White’s most popular design ever.

Fountaine-Pajot has built so many outstanding cruising catamarans that it’s difficult to narrow down any single boat, but we’ve always been fans of the good-looking, well-thought-out Bahia 46. At 46 feet, the boat is large enough for offshore forays and has plenty of volume; with its simple but powerful sail plan, it’s also an excellent performer.

Beginning around 1996, the French builder Catana was one of the first companies to manufacture fully found cruising cats for private ownership, and this Christophe Barreau design, which enjoyed a nearly 10-year production run from 1997-2006, was emblematic of this first generation of safe, fun, long-legged offshore voyagers.

When it comes to speed, light boats are fast ones. And if you wish to save weight, that means exotic modern materials like carbon. Catana now infuses the laminates of their entire production line with carbon fiber, and for this list, we’ve chosen the Catana 50 Carbon, one of the zippiest cats now crossing oceans.

Gemini 105M

Pioneering catamaran sailor, builder and designer Tony Smith launched the first of his 33-foot Gemini 105M’s (10.5 meters = 33′) in 1993, and soon after found a ready and willing stream of sailors enamored of the boat’s compact size, affordable price tag, and such innovations as the nifty lifting rudder and transom steps.

Built between 2000-2005, the Gunboat 62 firmly established the Gunboat brand: go-anywhere cats that applied race-boat technology to a world-cruising platform. Hull no. 1, Tribe, was built for company founder Peter Johnstone, who then spent a year-and-a-half cruising with his family, smiling all the way.

French builder Henri Wauquiez is best known for his long career building monohulls, but the Kronos 45 cat, which he launched in 1992, was ahead of her time. Classic lines, the aft “targa bar” over the cockpit, the louvered coach roof windows, even the distinctive stripes on her hull: the Kronos 45 remains timeless.

No roundup of cruising cats would be complete without several Lagoon entries, and the best of that impressive bunch might well be the Lagoon 380. Originally launched in 1999, and revered for its combination of quality, volume and performance, with over 740 boats built the 380 is still going strong.

Launched five years after the breakthrough 380, the Lagoon 440 was an evolutionary design that featured a raised flybridge helm station, a unique “gullwing” configuration below the bridge deck, expanded windows in the hull and much more. With 400 boats built in a 6-year production run, the 440 was an unqualified success.

How big can a production cat, still operable by a short-handed crew, really be? The builders at Lagoon discovered that 62-feet hit a sweet spot in the marketplace, and have sold over 70 boats since its introduction in 2010. The centerpiece of this design is the sensational steering station atop the flybridge, with expansive views of the sea and sky.

With an unmatched pedigree – designed by premier multihull naval architects Gino Morelli and Pete Melvin, built by the prestigious Robertson & Caine boatyard in South Africa, and commissioned by chartering giant The Moorings – the Leopard 40 was, perhaps unsurprisingly, Cruising World ’s Import Boat of the Year in 2005.

Louisiane 37

Based on the famous French racing cat Charente-Maritime, the Louisiane 37, designed by Joubert/Nivelt and launched by builder Fountaine-Pajot in 1983, was a light, fast liveaboard cruiser with full accommodations that represented a radical departure from the hefty British cats that preceded it.

Maine Cat 30

One of the more versatile and clever cats ever created, the central feature of the cool Maine Cat 30 is the open bridge deck/living room sandwiched between the hulls and canopied by a rigid, permanent hard top (the comfortable accommodations/ staterooms are stationed in the hulls). Ideal for a winter in the Bahamas but with the ability to sail offshore, it’s a boat for all seasons and reasons.

Built in Florida and beloved by the owners of the over 120 boats built during the company’s existence from 1993 to 2009, the Manta Catamarans range included 38-, 40- and 44-foot cats. For this exercise, however, we’re heralding the original Manta 42, which won the Best Value Overall prize in CW’s 2001 Boat of the Year contest.

Moorings 4800/Leopard 48

Another Leopard/Moorings collaboration built by the wizards at Robertson & Caine (though this boat was designed by fellow South African Alex Simonis), the Leopard 48 was another CW Boat of the Year winner with all the contemporary bells and whistles: forward cockpit, flybridge helm station and solid hardtop dodger, just to name a few.

Nautitech 441

The Best Multihull Under 45 Feet: So said the CW judging panel in the 2013 Boat of the Year competition, regarding the Nautitech 441. But what makes this versatile platform so intriguing are the different helm set-ups. The 441 employs a single wheel, to starboard, ideal for solo sailors, while the 442 has a pair of helm stations aft.

Outremer 5X

A state-of-the-art all-oceans cat that exemplifies how far multihull design has come, the 59-foot Outremer 5X was a winner on both sides of the Atlantic, taking top honors in the European Boat of the Year competition in 2013, and following up as the Best Full-Size Multihull in CW ’s contest a year later.

St. Francis 50

The flagship of the proud St. Francis line – built in South Africa since 1990 to designs by local legends Lavranos Marine Design – the St. Francis 50 is another “luxury cat” that shares much in common with an earlier 48-foot sister-ship, but packs even more payload into its roomier lines.

Click here to read more about the St. Francis 50

Seawind 1000

Founded by Aussie surfer and sailor Richard Ward in 1982, the 33-foot Seawind 1000 is easily the most popular cruising cat ever built in Australia (the company has since moved its manufacturing and management operations to Vietnam). Roomy and airy, these cats dot the coastline of eastern Oz.

Seawind 1160

If the Seawind 1000 was a minimalist approach to cruising cats, the 38-foot Seawind 1160 is the flip side of the coin, a full-fledged long-range voyager. Among the reasons it was named CW ’s Most Innovative boat for 2007 is the unique “tri-folding” door that stashes overhead to open up the saloon and cockpit into a spacious living area.

Click here to read more about the Seawind 1160.

Sunsail 384

Every sailboat is a compromise, and in the case of the Sunsail 384 (also sold privately as the Leopard 38) that’s a good thing, because designers Morrelli & Melvin and builder Robertson and Caine got the balance just right with this relatively small catamaran. With four cabins, the 384 can carry the same size bareboat charter crowd as her larger siblings, but does so with a decided bounce in her step. Named CW’s Import Boat of the Year in 2010, you can gauge the success of the design by the grins on the crew as they barrel down Sir Francis Drake channel in the British Virgin Islands.

Victoria 67

The French design office of Berret Racoupeau drafted the lines of Fountaine-Pajot’s new flagship, introduced in 2013, a magnificent world-girdling voyaging catamaran. Like other giant cats launched in recent years, the boat features a sensational upper deck with all sail controls, helm and lounging stations.

Click here to see more images of the Victoria 67.

Wharram Tanaroa

No list of influential multihulls would be complete without the work of James Wharram, and while Tangaroa wasn’t a production cat by any means, it showcases the British designer’s respect for ancient Polynesian craft. Wharram sailed this 23-foot-6-inch “double-hulled canoe” across the Atlantic in the 1950s, and sold countless plans for similar boats for decades afterwards.

Best catamaran and multihull: We sail the very best yachts on two and three hulls

  • Toby Hodges
  • March 20, 2024

Toby Hodges takes a look at all the nominees and the winner of the best catamaran and multihull category in the much-anticipated European Yacht of the Year Awards

There are many categories in the  European Yacht of the Year  awards, from the best  luxury yachts  and  performance yachts  to the  best yachts for families  and event a  best specialist yacht category. But with multihulls rapidly increasing in popularity, the best catamaran and multihull category was possibly the most hotly anticipated.

The small number of entrants in this category in no way reflects the rich range or huge demand for multihulls. Many new models were launched by the big yards in the preceding years and they’re struggling to keep up with bulging order books.

However, these three shortlisted represented a choice pick of the latest fast cruisers and each, in their own very different ways, are responding to this insatiable demand for high end space and pace cruising.

Best catamaran and multihull

Best catamaran and multihull winner 2024 – outremer 52.

My highlight test of 2023? Sailing this Outremer 52 for 200 miles over two days and nights! Quite how such a large vessel, one that is capable of doing laps of the planet in true comfort, is also capable of providing such enjoyable sailing is the secret sauce that helps scoop this prize.

And it was pushed hard for this award by the disruptive HH. But the Outremer is such a well rounded, measured and thought out yacht for bluewater cruising at a reliable speed – it’s the full package, a dream boat for family bluewater sailing and arguably the French yard’s best and most refined model to date.

Designer VPLP was tasked with replacing the popular and well proven 51 with more comfort and stowage, while maintaining the performance. It says it took the best of the 55 (which won this award two years ago), and the best of the 51’s deck plan to create this 52. The result means too many good features to point out here, from the variety of helm positions, including a completely protected position inboard using the swing pedestal, to the well conceived spaces. I’d therefore recommend reading our full test report online or in YW’s June 2023 issue!

Neel continues to enjoy its cruising trimaran niche, using the wow factor of bridgedeck accommodation combined with the type of sailing enjoyment and feedback monohull sailors appreciate.

The impressive lightwind performance and direct feel of a Neel I am used to. But I don’t think I’ve ever been so surprised by the amount of cabins or space as I was on this 52. It’s available with four to six cabins plus the option for two crew cabins aft! Some of this maze works well, other areas, such as the forward cabins in the main hull not quite so well. Horizon and rig sightlines and some finishing also leaves room for improvement.

The HH44 seemingly manages to achieve the space and pace balance in a compact 45ft package, while also being one of the most innovative and exciting new production yachts I have sailed. From its looks to layout, to practical on deck solutions such as swing pedestals, side gates through the bulwarks and transom gates that double as swim platforms and boost cockpit security, it’s packed with fresh thinking.

And on the subject of ‘fresh’, the natural ventilation encouraged into the yacht through those massive forward facing coachroof windows which open – a feat made possible thanks to a stiff carbon composite structure – negates any aircon requirements.

With its deep carbon boards and tall carbon rig the HH44 is a powerful, reactive animal to sail. However, it’s the incorporation of the first parallel hybrid electric drive units which really makes this high tech high performance cat stand out. The electric motors are attached to the aft end of conventional diesel engines, not only providing silent power, but renewable energy through regenerative drives while sailing.

Best catamaran and multihull 2023

Best catamaran winner – nautitech 44.

If the very best catamaran delivers the ideal comfort to performance compromise, here’s a catamaran that seems to strike the perfect balance.

For those who cite a lack of visibility and protection as reasons not to choose this aft helm route, try sailing this first – direct steering brings so much more helming pleasure that you get the enjoyable feeling and communication more associated with a monohull. The attention to keeping weight low and central, vacuum infused vinylester build and a low coachroof and boom all aid this performance. The fine entry Lombard-designed hulls allowed us to properly point upwind at 8 knots (in 13), but it was the hands-on steering sensation that really stayed with me.

While there’s no real inside/outside boundary – the saloon bridges both – the Chedal-Anglay interior design works well. It is not as voluminous as some, but is certainly enough to be smugly comfortable at anchor, finished to a good quality, with walnut Alpi trim as standard. The layout option for a ‘smart room’ office/laundry/bunk room or stowage cabin is indeed really smart.

Out of all the multihulls nominated or sailed last year, this cat impressed me the most under sail. It’s the ideal size to go distance sailing, with good performance, low draught and space for family and friends. It had me dreaming.

Balance 482

I was drawn to the Balance 482, thanks to the combination of good looking modern design, high average speeds and, chiefly, the profusion of clever thinking and practical ideas that it brings. The South African build uses a foam core with E-glass laminate and cored furniture for a light weight of 11.3 tonnes, but also with the ability to take a generous payload.

An electric furler option combined with screecher sail helps offer effortless handling and fun sailing, although the 482 prefers a breeze in the double figures. Smart options such as load cells on the rigging, a bowsprit camera to monitor the anchor chain, plus engine room and mast cams all help for maintaining vigilance. Other features we like include the solar panels properly installed on raised brackets, raincatchers built into the coachroof, and how all sheets and lines are led to the helm station. But the prize solution is the VersaHelm, which allows you to swing the wheel inboard, close off the helm station, and stand watch and steer from a fully protected position.

Catana Ocean Class

The Catana Ocean Class is a bulky model which is geared more towards creature comforts than the higher performance of its predecessors. That said, it uses carbon in the structure and roof, foam cored furniture, the tanks are mounted low in the hulls and it has daggerboards and fine entry bows. The weight savings help it offer a massive 5.5 tonne cruising payload, plus there’s capacious stowage and large tank, refrigeration and laundry capacity.

Positioned between Lagoon and Outremer, the Catana echoes a bit of its sister brand Bali’s concept with its internal cockpit-cum-saloon layout while providing good ventilation via large sliding doors and opening windows. We liked how it’s easy to handle solo from one helm station, including the electric remote control of the boards, plus the layout of the galley and navstation.

Those chasing speed and helming pleasure should perhaps look to the C-Cat 48, as it’s as close to helming a fast monohull as a cruising cat is likely to get and one of the rare times we enjoyed sailing upwind in light breezes on a multihull! This is largely thanks to a lightweight, stiff build – the Comar yard has managed to save 1.7 tonnes over the first boat (9.5 tonnes light) and increased the draught of the curved daggerboards to 2.95m.

A carbon roof and rig comes as standard, as well as an epoxy hull, full carbon deck, bulkheads and compression beam. It is a little quirky with comparatively small volumes, but this François Perus design will outperform most other performance cats and monohulls of a similar length.

The Excess 14 shares that direct sensation you get from aft helms and some of the performance of the C-Cat, but in a more balanced, voluminous layout for cruising. The Excess 14 benefits from the research of VPLP’s Vannes racing office, where attention was focused on weight reduction, with savings particularly in furniture, on improved stiffness (PET foam cored sandwich for main structural bulkheads), and the efficiency of deeper fixed keels.

The result is telling on the water, as it should be for any best catamaran contender, where you can log easy miles: we clocked late 7s upwind, reached in the late 8s and regularly averaged 9 knots with gennaker in 12-15 knots. Clear glass windows give acceptable visibility from the helms through the coachroof and the comparatively minimalist interior. In short it offers a good mix of volume, reasonable performance and enjoyable sailing – see our full review last month.

Sailing performance was another key facet in the battle of the big cats from the big cat yards, Lagoon and Fountaine Pajot. Both models offer luxurious amounts of space for home from home comfort, as watersports bases for long term cruising.

The decision to push the mast to the front of the coachroof to allow for a larger genoa than its recent preference for self-tacking jibs has paid off on the Lagoon 51. It helped us sail efficiently into the waves (albeit not pointing too high) before clocking double figures reaching with the code sail in 15 knots.

The Lagoon’s large flybridge with dual access is a USP at this size that will be a hit or miss deal breaker for many. The 51 offers unrivalled accommodation volume in three, four or six cabins, and relaxation zones, and good circulation through these big spaces. Once again the jury applauds Lagoon for thoroughly testing the prototype model during a six month tour. Over 100 have already sold.

We saw in our December issue how the experienced owners of the Fountaine Pajot test boat choose to live and work full time aboard their Aura 51. It’s a design that promotes space, enough to take friends, family and crucially for them, all the toys to enjoy at anchor. Its capability of averaging 8-10 knots also appeals, although the single side helm and hydraulic steering result in scant connection to the sailing in light winds (the same applies to the Lagoon).

The fact the yard already offers this in a hybrid version and has an electric and hydrogen model in the pipeline could sway some, but the decision between the FP and the Lagoon will likely come down to preference between a central flybridge or offset bulkhead helm together with interior design and layout.

Best Liveaboard Bluewater Catamarans

Best Liveaboard Bluewater Catamarans | Life of Sailing

Last Updated by

Daniel Wade

August 30, 2022

Catamarans are known for seaworthiness, but what sets a run-of-the-mill recreational cat from a full-blown liveaboard blue water cruiser?

The best production blue water cruising catamarans are the Manta 42, the Lagoon 42, the Leopard 45, the Lagoon 450, and the Prout 45. These vessels have excellent living accommodations and great sea keeping abilities.

In this article, we’ll cover five of the best liveaboard cruising catamarans, along with what sets them apart from similar vessels. Additionally, we’ll go over what to look for in a catamaran that functions both as a home and an offshore adventure cruiser.

We sourced the specifications listed in this article directly from boat design guides and the manufacturers themselves.

Table of contents

‍ Characteristics of Liveaboard Cruising Catamarans

Generally speaking, blue water catamarans that are suitable for offshore cruising and living aboard are between 40 and 50 feet in length. Some well-designed catamarans between 25 and 39 feet in length can also be used.

A good liveaboard cruising catamaran should have adequate berthing and galley facilities, along with an enclosed cockpit. Catamarans without enclosed cockpits, especially smaller vessels, aren’t spacious enough in the hull to accommodate good liveaboard facilities.

As far as cruising is concerned, the best Bluewater catamarans are designed for durability and seaworthiness. A vessel’s sea keeping abilities rely on more than just smoothness and speed. These vessels should be water-tight in key locations, positively buoyant, and equipped with all the right extras.

Factors that Increase Catamaran Seaworthiness

There are several additions that manufacturers commonly include with sea-going blue water catamarans. These include water-tight hatches, radar units, a backup generator, and a berth close to the cockpit.

The latter is particularly important, as the captain and crew need to be able to grab the controls in the event of a nighttime emergency.

Other add-ons, such as automatic winches and controls, are extremely beneficial to blue water catamarans. These devices allow the sails to be controlled remotely without the crew needing to walk on deck.

Cruising Catamaran vs. Bluewater Catamaran

Fundamentally, cruising catamarans and ‘blue water’ catamarans are one and the same. When companies classify a catamaran as a ‘cruising’ catamaran, they usually do so because of a few notable design features.

These include cruising accommodations such as large-capacity water tanks, large fuel tanks, onboard power supplies (like a generator and a battery bank; sometimes solar panels), and long-distance communication systems. Radar is another perk, and it’s available on most cruising catamarans.

Best sea-going Liveaboard Catamarans

We searched the market, researched specifications, and listened to the owner’s opinions to find the best sea-going catamarans on the market.

These vessels are also spacious and comfortable enough to live aboard, both at sea on extended voyages and in a marina. Here are our top picks.

1. Manta 42

The Manta 42 is a well-known and popular cruising catamaran with a reputation for seaworthiness and exceptional comfort for its size. This vessel, while on the smaller end for cruising catamarans, is quite seaworthy and handles well in all conditions.

The Manta 42 is powerful—it has a large sail area for its size, which gives it incredible speed in both low and high wind conditions.

The Manta 42 has an unconventional design feature that makes it stronger than the competition—and technically, more seaworthy than many larger and fancier catamarans. The feature we’re referring to is the Manta 42’s fixed crossbeam, which is stronger than typical designs.

The Manta 42’s interior is really well-designed and ideal for living aboard. The hulls feature large berthing areas, and the center cockpit area features a full-size marine galley and sitting areas. This vessel is popular with families, as there’s plenty of room for parents and one or two kids.

2. Lagoon 42

Here’s another 42-foot cruising catamaran with exceptional seaworthiness, shallow draft, and spacious accommodations. The Lagoon 42 is a modern and advanced sailing catamaran with numerous cruising features, such as a self-tacking jib and a flybridge.

This model has extensive sleeping capacity. Standard versions can sleep up to 12 adults, which is much more than many catamarans in the 40 to 45-foot range. The vessel also features four separate heads, which ensures privacy for guests and family members.

This vessel is designed for comfort, and therefore it's a bit beefier than some slimmer and less spacious models. It’s a heavy boat with a 25-foot beam, and it has excellent sea keeping abilities.

The primary drawback of the design is that its size and hull shape limits speed. But this isn’t as big of an issue on long voyages, and it’s still much faster than an equivalently-sized monohull.

3. Leopard 45

This premium catamaran is a bit larger and more comfortable than the vessels we’ve discussed so far. It’s a luxury catamaran with everything you’d expect for the half-million-dollar price point.

This vessel shines on the open water where it can let out its sails and stretch its legs. The vessel is lightning fast in the right conditions, and it has an astounding 700-gallon fuel capacity for when the wind isn’t blowing. You can sail it, motor it along, or do both at the same time for even greater speed.

From the factory, the Leopard 45 sleeps around 12 adults at its maximum capacity or four couples in separate staterooms—each with its own bathroom and shower. The center cockpit is also quite spacious, and the vessel can be navigated from the flybridge above the central living area.

4. Lagoon 450

Here’s another 45-foot catamaran that comes from one of the world’s most respected catamaran builders. Lagoon, which is currently producing several catamaran models, is known for its high-quality material choice and construction.

The Lagoon 450 is a flybridge sailing catamaran. Its design is based on the best-selling Lagoon 440—a slightly smaller model that proved itself over years of use and countless miles sailed between owners. And though it’s only 45 feet long, this catamaran is massive both inside and out.

The vessel is fast and nimble, and it has excellent sea keeping qualities. Below decks, the surprisingly wide hulls have room for full-size staterooms both fore and aft. But what the Lagoon 450 is known for is its deck space. There’s a ton of room on the decks for hanging out, living activities, and entertaining guests.

The center cockpit of the Lagoon 450 is like something out of a luxury condo. The styling is impetuous and airy, and there’s more than enough room to prepare a full meal for ten people or more. The settee can double as a sea cabin, with more than enough room for a small crew.

5. Prout 45

Here’s a sleek and fast catamaran that’s a superior choice for cruising and living aboard. The Prout 45 debuted in the 1990s and was a huge success.

Impressively, over 2,000 individual Prout 45 cruising cats were eventually produced. That’s a lot for a production catamaran—especially a large 45-foot model with a hefty price tag.

This sea-going catamaran has unconventional features, including pointed monohull-like bows and a nearly flush cockpit.

The interior arrangement of the vessel is unconventional as well, but many owners eventually learn to prefer it. For example, oddities include a galley in one of the hulls instead of the center, where catamarans often keep such facilities.

This is a fast cruising catamaran with a very shallow draft. Three feet six inches of draft, to be precise.

This means that the Prout 45 is ideal for sailing in shallow locations, such as around tropical coral reefs and in areas known for sandbars. The draft of this vessel is much closer in depth to that of a 20 to 25-foot displacement monohull than to a full-size 45-foot catamaran.

Trends 2020: Ten Top Power Cats

' src=

All of a sudden, it seems, power catamarans are taking center stage in the U.S. cruising community. You now see them almost everywhere, and more and more people are talking about them at boat shows, on blogs, and on the docks. It’s easy to see why.

Most obvious, is that power cats offer space – a lot of it. The salons resemble living rooms at home, with all the comforts of home. The decks are filled with lounging, dining, entertaining and private areas everywhere – on the foredeck, the aft deck, up on the flybridge, often even down in the beach club. With beams often equal to half the boat’s length, the cats have room for everything.

Then there’s the efficiency of the platform. The twin hulls, broadly spaced, are designed to run on top of the water, rather than through it, like displacement hulls. (I’ve driven a Maine 47 Power Cat in four- to five-foot seas in the Bahamas where the ride would not have been nearly as comfortable in a monohull.) And power cats are often more fuel efficient than same-size monohulls.

One thing I think people tend to overlook is that power cats offer more privacy (while also providing more social spaces). This is particularly true in the sleeping areas, where the owner and guest cabins can be separated into the two hulls. But even in the salon, or on the outer decks, the sheer amount of extra room means that most people can find their own private space if they want it.

The growing popularity of power cats follows that of sailing cats around the world. At first, power cats were popular in Europe (largely because of the French builders) and the Far East. But then they were introduced into large charter fleets, particularly The Moorings (Leopard) and MarineMax Vacations (Aquila). People tried them there, liked them, and brought their enthusiasm back home with them.

Here’s our look at ten top power cats that we’ve covered recently. (You also can keep up to date on power cats in our sister publication, Multihulls Today http://multihullstoday.com )

Aquila just announced that it’s building a new 54-foot cruiser for its large, worldwide catamaran fleet, and it is designed for maximum comfort inside and out. The full-beam master stateroom is forward, for example, with panoramic views from hull side windows; it takes advantage of the cat’s more than 25-foot beam to make it a special place underway or at an anchorage.

The 54 will debut later this year, and we’ll have more details later on as well. But what we know now is that the boat will have three-, four- or even five-cabin configurations, plus a possible skipper’s quarters and an optional galley-down layout. The galley-down takes the place of the fifth cabin, but it provides more room in the already massive salon, adding a formal dining area plus an extra seating lounge.

The salon has large tempered glass side windows for maximum natural light, and a deep, comfortable lounge. The aft cockpit has a separate dining area next to an indoor/outdoor bar. The large swim platform is made for easy access to water sports. It also supports a tender on solid mounting blocks. The flybridge can be open or complete enclosed and climate controlled.

To make life easy on board, the Aquila 54 has lots of counter space, a full-size refrigerator, a water-maker and a washer and dryer. Aquilas are built by Sino Eagle in China, and are sold to private buyers and also put into the MarineMax Vacations charter fleet. The Aquila fleet itself now has 32-, 36- and 44-foot models; a new 70 is scheduled for later this year.

Dave Bigge, the VP of Aquila International, says the list of standard features on the 54 “will impress anyone familiar with vessels of this size. Performance, another hallmark of the Aquila brand, will allow for high-speed travel and slower, more efficient, extended cruising ranges.”

Just launched, the Aspen Power Catamarans 35-foot C108, powered by asymmetrical Yamaha outboards, hit a top speed of 25 knots and a fuel-efficient cruising speed of 19 knots, producing 2 mpg.

Larry Graf, Aspen’s founder and “chief adventurer,” designed the new Aspen so it could be trailered to new cruising grounds. It has a beam of 10 ’8” and a combined boat and trailer weight of 12,500 pounds, so it could be towed by a ¾ ton pickup.

Like all Aspens, the new C108 has the company’s patented non-symmetrical hulls and power to help with exceptional tracking, fuel efficiency and performance in heavy seas. The boat has a 200-hp Yamaha in the larger starboard hull, and a 115-hp Yamaha in the smaller port hull.

The new salon is larger than in previous Aspens, and has a five-person dinette, a 12-foot long galley, and wrap-around windows. Below, the new cat has room for a master with a king-sized bed, two smaller guest cabins, and a large head with shower.  http://aspenpowercatamarans.com

CAPE POWERCATS 35

top cat sailing catamaran

Taking advantage of two trends, the increasing popularity of power catamarans and the explosive growth of outboard power, Cape Powercats is introducing its new 3500, and it comes in either a center console or a pilothouse version. And you can customize either one to fit your cruising lifestyle.

The good news is that the new Cape Powercats use the same hull as the one on the Buzzards Bay 34 power cat that received rave reviews when it was launched in 2010. When I was talking to JP Skov, a partner in Northstar Yacht Sales in Portsmouth, Rhode Island, who’s handling Cape Powercats, I realized that I actually had tested the Buzzards Bay back then, on a lousy afternoon, heading out from Falmouth on Cape Cod to cruise over to Martha’s Vineyard on three-to-four-foot lumpy seas.

I remembered at the time that the cat performed admirably, giving a relatively smooth ride without the pounding that I had expected. It turned easily and remained almost flat, and when we could find a stretch of decent water it produced an upper-30-knot top speed.

Chris White, of Chris White Designs in South Dartmouth, Massachusetts, drew that boat for Russell Hunt’s Multihull Development Inc. White had been designing multihulls for about three decades, and he got this one right.

The Buzzards Bay, and now the Cape Powercat, also are designed for the way many people use their boats today. The cats provide comfortable, fast, enjoyable coastal cruising with a lot of space for their length. The 12’ 7” beam means there’s room for everyone, or everything, you want to take along for a day, weekend or even a week on the water; a cat simply offers much more volume for its size than a comparable monohull.

But the real appeal is in the ride. The Cape Powercat has slender displacement hulls with a fine entry and full after sections. The boats accelerate quickly, track easily and they don’t pound. The deck between the hulls on the Buzzards Bay didn’t slam or make any noise while cutting through the waves and spray; the boat has a tall tunnel and ramped underbody.

“The ride of a Chris White-designed power catamaran is one of the best and most sea-kindly I have ever experienced,” says Skov. The lines of the boat are clean, functional and appealing. Skov says that a carbon beam aft gives the strength to deliver a wide-open platform with the cockpit and the helm deck all on the same level. “This feature has allowed us to deliver a boat to a client that is wheelchair-bound,” he said. ‘It also allows us to offer customizable layouts depending on the client’s boating style.”

Specs.: LOA: 37’7”; Beam: 12’7”; Draft: 1’6”; Disp.: 10,000 lbs.; Fuel: 300 gals.; Water: 60 gals.; Power: 2×300-hp outboards. http://capepowercats.com

FOUNTAINE PAJOT 67

top cat sailing catamaran

Fountaine Pajot just launched its Power 67 flagship, and the big French cat is now on its way to Greece; it’s off Gibraltar in the picture at top. The Power 67 is a long-range, blue-water cruiser with massive social and entertaining areas, and its lines show off Fountaine Pajot’s usual elegant and innovative design.

The flybridge is covered by a hardtop with a sunroof, and it extends aft to protect the cockpit and port and starboard to cover the side decks. The teak swim platform lowers for access to the water, while the cockpit has several sunbathing areas, a grill and a dining table. Glass doors open fully to the salon; it’s built for entertaining, and it’s filled with natural light from windows all around.

The cat’s 32-feet-plus beam provides enough space for comfortable living and entertaining  at sea or at the dock. There’s definitely room for a crowd. The Power 67 come in two versions: The Classic version, with the galley up on the port side of the salon with a large L-shaped lounge to starboard. In the Lounge version, the galley is down, but there’s a bar in the salon and another large L-shaped sofa on the port side.

With the galley down, the boat has the owner’s suite plus three double cabins in the twin hulls below; all the cabins have their own heads with showers. With the galley up, the accommodations include the owner’s suite plus four double cabins.

Fountaine Pajot calls the owner’s suite a private apartment, with good reason. The apartment has a sofa, a dressing room, a walk-in shower and twin vanities. It also has a private door leading to the massive foredeck, with several lounging areas and an optional Jacuzzi..

Standard power comes from twin 300-hp diesels; twin 435-hp diesels are optional. Range with the larger engines is 1,700 nm.

Specs.: LOA: 64’6”; Beam: 32’2”; Draft: 3’8”; Disp.: 31.5 tons; Fuel: 1,057 gals.; Water: 277 gals.; Power: 2×300-hp; option: 2×435-hp.  http://fountainepajot.com

I thought I’d take a quick tour of the new Horizon 65 Power Catamaran during the Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show, where it was just launched. Then I realized there’s no such thing as a quick tour of this boat. It’s huge. It’s luxurious. It has beautiful woodwork – as in the curved railing on the stairs from the salon to the skylounge; it’s like a work of art. You don’t just glance at it and look away. You want to get up close and personal.

I forgot about the quick tour and settled in to enjoy this new cat, hull number one of Horizon’s 65 PC series, a boat that combines the best aspects of a high-end motoryacht with the stability, efficiency, performance – and space – of a large cruising catamaran. Horizon builds its boats per the owners’ specifications. The 65 comes with either four en suite staterooms (two with king berth, two with queens), or three en suite staterooms with crew’s quarters. The twin hulls provide enough space so that these are all large, comfortable and filled with light from hullside windows.

And this cat performs. Powered by standard twin 850-hp CAT diesels, it tops out at 26-plus knots, and has a cruising speed of 22 knots. Range at cruising speed is 500 nm.

Stuart Hegerstrom, the co-founder of The PowerCat Company, which distributes Horizon power cats, said the hull design is the result of long-term research and tank testing. “We are in the enviable position of being at the leading edge of the power catamaran revolution,” he said. The symmetrical, semi-displacement hull was designed by Lavranos Marine Design of New Zealand, and it has a sophisticated planing wedge that provides a stable, soft and level ride, even in rough conditions.

The first thing you notice when you climb on the new Horizon is the cockpit: It’s huge (the boat has a 24’ 6” beam) and it’s luxurious enough to be at home on a megayacht. There’s a curved settee across the transom, a high-gloss centered dining table, a wet bar and fridge, and enough space to hold a crowd. Indeed, at a media event there I counted 21 people in the cockpit, and there was room to spare.

Horizon customizes the interiors to fit the owner’s wishes. The wife of this boat’s owner (it’s his third Horizon) is a chef, so the galley, with counterspace that stretched on forever, is dominant in the salon. Up top, the skylounge (the boat also comes in a plain flybridge configuration) also is huge. Twin Stidd helm chairs are forward, then there’s another wet bar with stools to port, plus a day head aft; a large L-shaped settee is aft to starboard. The boat deck all the way aft is large enough for a  good-sized dinghy and any assortment of water toys.

The 65 is built for owner/operators, liveaboards or the charter trade. Richard Ford, the other co-founder of the Powercat Company, said “the PC 65 allows you to own a boat with larger engines, more fuel for longer-range cruising, and ticks the box of a well-appointed fourth cabin. For owners who choose to put their PC 65 into our charter program, it also offers comfortable crew accommodations.”

Horizon offers a management program for owners who want to put their boat in charter when they’re not using it. Part of the charter program is a try-before-you-buy offer, Ford said, where a potential customer can charter the boat for about 1 percent of its price before he makes a final decision. The base price of the new 65, Ford said, is about $3.9 million. The charter price for a week is $35,000. “We’ve sold so many yachts to people who charter before they buy,” he said. The Horizon power cat fleet ranges from 52 to 74 feet.

Specs: LOA: 65’1”; Beam: 24’6”; Draft: 5’3”; Disp.: 111,250 lbs.; Fuel: 1,500 gals.; Water: 300 gals.; Power: 2×850-hp CAT C12-9. http://horizoncatamarans.com

LAGOON SEVENTY 8

top cat sailing catamaran

The flagship of the Lagoon motor yacht fleet, the new, luxurious, long-range Lagoon Seventy 8 will be introduced at the Cannes Yachting Festival in September and then shown in the U.S. later in the year. The company says the idea behind the massive 78-foot-long cruiser with a 36-foot beam is to compete in the top end of the world-wide motor yacht market.

The Seventy 8 will emphasize comfort, luxury and seaworthiness. The cat’s twin hulls provide stability and space, while the three-foot draft gives the boat access to shallow bays and coves around the world. We don’t have details yet, but the interior spaces will be large for living aboard and entertaining, while the lines and proportions have been drawn to give the boat a timeless elegance. The exterior was designed by Patrick Le Quement; the interiors by Nauta Design.

Part of the Beneteau Group, Lagoon has made more than 3,000 large sailing catamarans over the years, while recently entering the powerboat marketplace. Made in Bordeaux, France, the Lagoon Seventy 8 is a motor yacht version of Lagoon’s Seventy 7 sailboat.    http://themultihullgroup.com/lagoon-78-my

LAZZARA 70, 85

top cat sailing catamaran

For all the obvious reasons, Lazzara has just changed the name of its new line of luxury catamarans from Corona to Lazzara Catamarans. It’s building the first two models, a 70 and an 85, in Turkey. And they’re both meant to be head-turning statements of space, light and design.

The 85 (pictured above) is simply a larger version of the 70, but its size emphasizes the enormous parts of the yacht that open for light and air and entertaining on both the lower accommodations deck and the upper salon deck, plus the open flybridge protected under a canopy hardtop.

The lower deck takes advantage of the cat’s 35-foot beam to create a master suite that stretches from one side to the other, and then features balconies that fold out for sunbathing or enjoying a private breakfast or evening cocktail on the water. Open them both and you can enjoy a sea breeze and probably one of the largest private suites on anything smaller than a superyacht. There are four other cabins on the same deck, each designed to be an elegant use of space and light; they don’t have the fold-out balconies, but they do have long strips of glazing to connect them to the views outside.

On the main deck, the salon has three walls of sliding glass that open to port, starboard and aft. There’s an indoor dining area and game table to port, an L-shaped bar and lounge area, and a central U-shaped sofa and counter seating forward.

The flybridge has another dining area, this one al fresco, plus a bar, sun lounges and a Jacuzzi tub. The foredeck is a massive, full-beam social area, with seating and sun lounges.

The Lazzara’s beach club is striking, even given the dramatic lines of the cat from any angle. Sweeping stairways are on both sides of the teak aft deck, embracing what usually would be called a swim platform, for easy access to swimming, watersports and entertaining. The beach club has shaded seating and large-screen TVs, and it’s big enough to hold a 26-foot tender.

Standard power on the Lazzara 85 comes from twin 550-hp Volvos; 1,000-hp Volvos are optional. Top speed with the standard engines is 21 knots; cruising speed is 15 knots.

Specs.: LOA: 85’0”; Beam: 35’0”; Draft: 4’6”; Disp.: 155,000 lbs.; Fuel: 2,500 gals.; Water: 750 gals.; Power: 2×550-hp Volvos. http://lazzaracatamarans.com

Walking through the salon of the Leopard 53, which just made its debut at the Miami show, I was not surprised by the amount of space inside the new power cat. I had expected that; after all, the boat has a beam of more than 25 feet. But I was surprised by the amount of light that beamed in.

There are panoramic windows all around, and the interior décor is all light in color and modern in design, so that it’s both inviting and soothing at the same time. It would be easy to feel at home on this new Leopard; it’s simply begging to head off on a long cruise.

The Leopard 53 PC replaces the Leopard 51, one of the most popular cruising cats ever made, with 135 sold. And the 53 is not only larger; it’s also more comfortable, more efficient, and more stable.

You can walk on via a large teak swim platform and then go up teak stairs on either side of the transom to the large aft deck, which is meant for relaxing and entertaining. An L-shaped settee and table are on the port side; a sun pad, big enough for two, is to starboard.

Large sliding glass doors open wide to the salon; the aft deck and the salon are on the same level, so the outside and inside spaces flow together. The galley is aft, and it’s split. A home-sized fridge and freezer and a sink are on the port side; the stove and microwave and a generous countertop are to starboard.

Moving forward, lounges are on each side, and the helm seat on the starboard side is wide enough to fit two people. A centered glass door opens to the foredeck; it has large sun lounges on each side.

Up top, the flybridge is protected by a hardtop. The upper helm is to starboard, and it can seat two people. A seat for three people is to port. A bit aft, also on the port side, is a large U-shaped settee and table. A large sun pad is farther aft.

The accommodations deck below comes in two versions. The Leopard 53, for sale to private owners, has three cabins. The Leopard 534, which is placed in charter by The Moorings, has four. In either one, the twin hulls of a cat provide a degree of privacy for the cabins that is not usually found in a monohull.

I walked through the three-cabin boat at the show. It has two cabins, both en suite heads, in the port hull. The owner’s cabin stretches along the starboard side, with the berth and living area aft, the head, with twin sinks, forward, and the separate shower in the bow.

The engine room and machinery spaces on the 53 are aft. Power comes from twin 370-hp Yanmars. They produce a top speed of 25 knots. Running at a cruising speed of 17 knots, the range is 463 nm. But what’s remarkable about this boat is that if you run on one engine, at 6.8 knots, the range climbs to a full 1,995 nm.

All told, the Leopard 53 is an impressive new boat. And that’s not just my opinion. I was on the boat the morning of the second day of the show, and Leopard had already sold three of them.

Specs.: LOA: 53’1”; Beam: 25’2”; Draft: 3’2”; Disp.: 41,070 lbs.; Fuel: 581 gals.; Water: 185 gals. Power: 2×370-hp Yanmar diesels. http://leopardcatamarans.com   http://moorings.com

NAUTITECH 47

top cat sailing catamaran

In another example of the growth of power cats, Nautitech Catamarans will have the world premiere of its new 47 Power at the Miami International Boat Show. The new boat, from the French company that also makes sailing cats, is powered by twin 225-hp Volvo Penta diesels.

With its fine entry and clean lines, the Nautitech 47 has all the design elements of a contemporary European catamaran. Windows stretch all around the salon, letting in an enormous amount of natural light, while windows in the hull sides admit light to the four cabins below.

The large flybridge, with an upper helm, lounging area and wet bar, is protected by a hardtop, and the flybridge extends far enough aft to protect the deck below. A sun lounge is forward of the flybridge, offering great views of what’s ahead, while there’s another, much larger, sun lounge on the foredeck.

The Nautitech 47 is designed for safe and comfortable cruising. The side railings are high going forward, and the boat’s almost 25-foot beam offers stability in a seaway. The boat draws less than 4 feet, so it can cruise easily in the Bahamas or other areas with shallow water.

The boat can be ordered with three or four cabins, with three or four heads. The salon is designed with warm woodwork, and it houses a lower helm station.

The company says the twin hulls provide a perfect trim at any speed. With an upgrade to twin 300-hp Volvos, top speed is 22 knots; dial back to 8.5 knots, and the range is about 1,000 nm.

Nautitech has been building catamarans in Rochefort, France, on the Bay of Biscay, since 1994.

Specs.: LOA: 46’8”; Beam: 24’9”; Draft: 3’11”; Disp.: 33,075 lbs.; Fuel: 340 gals.; Water: 158 gals.; Power: 2×225-hp Volvo Penta. http://nautitechcatamarans.com

Sunreef Yachts, the luxury builder in Gdansk, Poland, is filling out its power catamaran fleet with the introduction of a new 70 footer. Its lineup already has 60-, 80- and 100-foot models, so the new 70 fills a gap.

Like the previous models, the 70 is elegant, comfortable and seaworthy. The new cat also takes full advantage of its more than 37-foot beam to create enormous spaces for entertaining and living on board. The foredeck, for example, runs full beam and includes a “terrace,” a protected lounging area with sofas, and then an open area all the way forward for various sun lounges.

The two hulls provide options for custom layouts below, starting with two large staterooms on each side, but with more possible staterooms aft and crew quarters in the bows. The galley also can be located aft on the lower deck, as opposed to its more standard location on the port side of the salon.

The 70 has Sunreef’s signature knife-like bows and wraparound windows in the main deck/salon. It also has large opening doors aft in the salon, so it blends seamlessly with the aft deck, which is protected by the overhang from the flybridge. The aft deck also has an al fresco dining space. Wide teak steps lead down to the innovative aft garage and a swim platform that can be raised or lowered hydraulically for the launching of a dinghy or jet ski.

Up top, the flybridge has enough space for a spa pool, a bar, a dining area, lounging area, and the upper helm with a three-person seat. The hardtop includes an opening sun roof.

Sunreef is offering multiple power options for the 70, ranging from twin 300-hp diesels to twin 850-hp diesels.

Specs.: LOA: 69’9”; Beam: 37’2”; Draft: NA; Disp.: NA; Fuel: 3,170 gals.; Water: 422 gals.; Power: 2×300-hp diesels up to 2×850-hp diesels.  http://sunreef-yachts.com

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: what is the best size catamaran for ocean sailing.

The ideal size for an ocean sailing catamaran varies depending on your preferences and needs. Generally, catamarans between 40 and 50 feet in length are considered suitable for long-range cruising . These boats have ample space, good stability, and can handle adverse conditions reasonably well. However, you should also evaluate factors like crew size, budget, and desired sailing experience.

Q: Which catamaran brands are known for luxury and performance?

Several catamaran brands are praised for their luxury and performance , with Lagoon and Antares being two examples. The Lagoon 40 is a popular choice, and for those looking for a premium experience, the Antares 44i is an eclectic option. Additionally, brands like Fountaine Pajot and Leopard offer a blend of comfort and performance.

Q: What size catamaran is ideal for a comfortable liveaboard experience?

The ideal size for a comfortable liveaboard catamaran experience is often considered to be in the range of 37 to 47 feet. This size range is a balance between ample living space, manageable handling, and cargo capacity for long-term living and sailing. For example, based on cat experts, catamarans smaller than this range can feel cramped and may lack the necessary cargo space, while larger vessels may be more challenging to handle. Additionally, for families or those planning to sail around the world, a size range of 45 to 50 feet may be recommended for the best combination of space and seaworthiness.

Q: How do catamarans perform in rough seas, and what should I look for in a seaworthy model?

Catamarans generally perform well in rough seas due to their excellent stability, but their performance can vary based on various factors:

  • Hull Design : Look for catamarans with hull designs that have a deep-V shape or wave-piercing bows. These designs help to cut through waves rather than ride over them, providing a smoother experience in rough seas.
  • Bridge Deck Clearance : Sufficient clearance between the water and the bridge deck is crucial. A higher bridge deck reduces the chances of waves slamming into the boat, minimizing the risk of structural damage and providing a more comfortable ride.
  • Construction Quality : Choose catamarans built with high-quality materials and robust construction techniques. The build should be sturdy to withstand the stresses of rough seas.
  • Seaworthy Features : Look for features like solid handholds, secure hatches, and properly sealed windows to ensure that the boat remains watertight and secure in challenging conditions.
  • Size and Weight : Larger catamarans tend to handle rough seas better due to their size and weight. They offer more stability and often have better seakeeping abilities.
  • Sail Plan and Rigging : A well-designed sail plan with the ability to reef sails easily in adverse conditions is important. Also, robust rigging and properly secured equipment are crucial for safety.
  • Experienced Crew : Ultimately, the crew’s experience and skill in handling the catamaran in rough seas play an important role in ensuring a safe and comfortable ride.

However, before purchasing a catamaran, it’s highly recommended to try it out in varying sea conditions to see how it performs. Additionally, speaking with cat owners can provide valuable insights into specific models and their seaworthiness in rough seas.

Q: Which catamarans are considered best for a long-term cruising lifestyle?

Some catamarans are more suited for long-term cruising thanks to their durability, efficiency, and spacious interiors. Brands such as Lagoon, Leopard, and Fountaine Pajot are well-regarded for their long-range cruising options. However, remember to assess factors like a boat’s fuel efficiency, storage capacity for provisions, and freshwater systems when choosing the best cruising catamaran for a long-term lifestyle.

Q: How big of a catamaran do you need to sail around the world?

Sailing around the world is a significant undertaking, and the ideal catamaran size will depend on your preferences, experience, and crew size. Typically, a catamaran of at least 40 feet is recommended for world cruising, as it offers a balance of space, comfort, and safety. However, some experienced sailors have completed circumnavigations with a smaller boat, but this requires more preparation and adaptability. However, it’s always good to consider your specific needs and experience, look for various models, and consult with world cruisers to determine the optimal catamaran size for your journey.

Final Words!

After browsing through some expert opinions and reviews, it’s clear that there’s a fantastic selection of cruising catamarans out there, each with its own set of features that could make it the best choice depending on your sailing needs.

What’s really great is that each catamaran brand brings something unique to the table. It’s all about finding the right fit for your sailing style, whether you prioritize speed, luxury, or a blend of both. And with advancements in design and technology, the latest models are increasingly efficient and comfortable.

In the end, the “best” catamaran is the one that aligns with your personal preferences, your sailing itinerary, and the experience you’re looking for on the water. It’s a decision that combines practicality with a bit of dreaming about the sea adventures that await.

Performance cruising catamarans are impressive-looking vessels that focus on speed above comfort. These fast boats are ideal for racing and long cruising vacations. But with the numerous brands and models on the market, how do you know which is the best one?

The best high-speed performance cruising catamarans are the Outremer 4x, McConaghy MC50, Nautitech 44, Gunboat 62, Balance 526, and Marsaudon Composites ORC50. All these boats deliver outstanding speeds and are light in weight, relatively comfortable, and incredibly safe.

This article will explore the brands and models that I believe have the best combination of performance and comfort . We’ll look at their speeds and what makes them cruise so fast. We’ll also examine the factors to consider when shopping for a performance cruising cat.

Table of Contents

How Fast Are Performance Cruising Catamarans?

Cruising catamarans are generally faster than monohulls of similar lengths. This means most well-built and well-balanced cats will arrive at their destination much sooner, and the cruise is much more comfortable. Performance cruising cats like the Nautitech include deep daggerboards and rudders, narrow waterline beams, hull chines, and big sail plans that allow for faster sailing than a standard cruising cat.

Outremer 4X

Outremer Catamarans are well-known for their high speeds. These exciting cats sport brilliant designs, narrow bows, and large rigs. Built in Southern France, the vessels are strong and long-lasting since their structures feature materials such as carbon, glass, and vinyl ester.

The Outremer 4x is a stable and comfortable high-speeding cruising catamaran that performs ocean crossings and confronts any weather with remarkable ease. Named the European Boat of the Year in 2017, this 48-foot (14.6 m) bluewater cruiser sails faster than wind speed and attains maximum cruising speeds of 20 knots.

The 4x is an upgrade of the extremely popular Outremer 45, thus retaining Outremer’s core values of speed, safety, and comfort. It’s built for maximum performance and enjoyment, with the lightweight, carbon fiber structure allowing for additional speed under sail .

Featuring comfort typical of much larger vessels, the Outremer 4X features 4 double cabins, hot water showers, a full kitchen, spacious storage, and excellent ventilation. There’s also an expansive deck, an unobstructed cockpit, and large trampoline areas. Most importantly, your safety is assured through the cat’s unique features including a robust structure, offshore design, stability, and unrivaled speed potential.

The 4x’s cutting-edge design makes it ideal for competitive racing or blue water cruising, and it does both without compromising your comfort, safety, or onboard livability. However, to sail at maximum speed, the boat must remain lightweight, requiring your interior to be fitted out quite minimally. The other downside is the high price tag; the Outremer 4X commands a price between $912,322 and $1,202,945 .

McConaghy MC52

The McConaghy MC52 is a performance luxury cruising cat reflective of McConaghy’s 50 years of experience in building high-tech composite projects. The luxurious boat features a flybridge, retracting centerboards, optimized hulls, and an open space bridgedeck combining the salon with the cockpit. You can also customize the boat to your specifications.

top cat sailing catamaran

This hi-tech cat comes with sizeable sliding salon windows and frameless doors that provide fantastic views. Its wave-piercing bows can cut through waves, thus helping to increase performance by minimizing pitch resistance, while still retaining a smooth ride. Also, the saloon offers spacious dining space for up to 8 people, and the galley area is more like a penthouse.

top cat sailing catamaran

The manufacturer’s background in building high-end racing yachts has resulted in an incredibly strong and lightweight vessel capable of reaching 22 knots (40.7 km/h or 25.29 mph). The main downside to this boat is the boom placement on the mast, which is much higher than other high-performance cats. This makes accessing the mainsail somewhat challenging. It also increases the MC50’s center of gravity and center of effort.

top cat sailing catamaran

You can get the MC52 for about $1.6 million.

Nautitech 44

The Nautitech 44 easily blends comfort and fun to deliver an impressive sailing performance, whether you take short trips or long ocean crossings. The boat offers a good balance under sail, and it features helming stations on each hull. Plus, there’s an integrated hardtop bimini complete with sunroof opening. Slim hulls translate to higher speeds, with the vessel reaching up to 17 knots (31.4 km/h or 19.51 mph).

The well-laid-out interior boasts a functional design, ample storage space, plus all the equipment you require for ocean cruising, such as a fridge, watermaker, and solar.

Nautitech 44’s twin helms give you the real sailing experience with a fantastic view of the sails and great visibility when maneuvering into port. However, you might not appreciate being stuck in the aft helm position without protection in lousy weather or during hot days.

Nevertheless, the boat’s responsiveness makes sailing more pleasurable. Plus, it’s affordable; the price is between $236,000 and $334,000.

Marsaudon Composites ORC50

Marsaudon Composites vessels are ideal for both racing and cruising. The sporty-looking ORC 50 comes with large inverted bows, an angular coachroof, a high freeboard, and a sturdy rotating carbon mast. In addition, the vessel is light which allows it to accelerate quickly, while the angular coachroof offers lots of space and excellent visibility.

The ORC50 can attain 23+ knots (42.5+ km/h or 26.41+ mph) and is among the fastest high-performance livable multihulls. It’s capable of doing more than 350 miles (563.27 km) per day.

The downside to the ORC50 is it’s a bit technical to sail, thus requiring a skilled sailor. Furthermore, its immense power and speed can be intimidating to less experienced sailors. Solely designed for speed, the ORC50’s interior is simple, less roomy, and somewhat spartan; hence the boat might not be all that comfy. Still, it’ll get you where you want to go pretty fast, and it’s an excellent value for money at approximately $787,751.25.

Gunboat 62

The Gunboat 62 is a true high-speed catamaran capable of sailing at 20 knots (37 km/h or 23 mph) over true wind speeds and known to notch up speeds of 36+ knots (66.7+ km/h or 41.45 mph) on a surf. The initial 3 Gunboat 62 boats featured epoxy, E-glass, and carbon fiber construction, but the fourth vessel was all carbon, sported a taller rig and a more expansive sail area.

These structural features made the Gunboat 62s extremely light, and they formed the original luxury high-performance cruising cats.

This multihull sailboat boasts a carbon mast, round hull sections for a minimized wetted surface area, high-aspect rudders, and retractable daggerboards. The steering station offers 360-degree visibility and sports overhead hatches that you can use to monitor the mainsail trim. The boat also contains 3 private cabins with queen berths, 2 spacious heads with showers, an aft cockpit, galley, and lounge.

On the downside, Gunboats are pricey cats; hence they’re also expensive to maintain. The Gunboat 62 isn’t that spacious either as it’s more focused on speed, but it’s extremely comfortable, plus there’s plenty of space for hanging out. You can buy this catamaran starting from $2 million .

Balance 526

Built with a combination of carbon fiber, E-glass, epoxy, closed-cell foam, and composite bulkheads, this boat is strong, light, and can withstand terrible weather. The retractable daggerboards allow for good upwind performance. All high load areas contain carbon fiber, while furniture and cabinets feature cored sandwich construction, producing the lightest yet most robust catamaran.

A Balance 526 will reach speeds of up to 20knots without stressing the rig too much.

The boat is available in various layouts and comfortably accommodates 6 people. The spacious aft cockpit and saloon provide panoramic visibility. And since Balance 526 can handle the extra weight, you get performance plus all the creature comforts you desire.

Still, Balance 526’s pricing is on the higher end, beginning at $1,440,000 . Also, the slender hulls result in less space down below. Nevertheless, the boat lives up to its name, achieving the perfect balance between superb performance and comfort.

What Makes Performance Cruising Catamarans So Fast?

top cat sailing catamaran

Performance Cruising Catamarans Have Narrow Hulls

Performance catamarans contain two small narrow hulls, which cause them to have less water resistance. Smaller hulls mean the vessels have much smaller bow waves to fight, allowing them to move extremely fast. In addition, the less hull area is underwater, the faster the boat is capable of moving since there’s less drag.

Having said that, it’s important to note that a narrow hull is more prone to burying its bows in rough seas. The wider the hull, the more buoyancy it offers, but only up to a given point. After which, the excessive width becomes unmanageable and performance suffers. The key lies in finding the right balance.

top cat sailing catamaran

Performance Cruising Catamarans Have Considerable Length

The longer a cruising cat is, the faster it’ll move. While each vessel bears a maximum hull speed, in most cases, the lengthier the boat, the higher the speed it can reach. The length of the hull (length on the waterline) also has a significant impact on the speed performance. Thus, the cat attains maximum speeds when the wavelength is equal to the length on the waterline (hull speed).

Therefore, the longer the length of the hull, the better the performance of a high-speed cruising cat. You can also compare two cruising cats’ speeds based on this measure.

Performance Cruising Catamarans Have Quality Builds

Modern cat manufacturers continue designing more innovative high-performance cruising cats that deliver a new blend of performance and cruising features. They achieve this by using advanced construction materials, better daggerboard designs, and creative weight allocation. They also keep a keener focus on onboard amenities. For instance, asymmetrical daggerboards placed midships in each hull can help achieve proper balance and hull trim.

The overall goal is to design cruising cats that offer high speeds, outstanding performance, and enough offshore comfort.

Here’s an article if you are wondering what daggerboards and centerboards are and why they impact performance so much.

top cat sailing catamaran

Performance Cruising Catamarans Are Light-weight

The lighter a cruising catamaran, the greater its performance. And some of the most popular high-performance catamarans find an optimal balance between performance and comfort. As a result, modern performance-based cruising cats have embraced the use of carbon composite construction for hulls, daggerboards, and rigging, instead of the somewhat heavier glass fiber materials.

A weighed-down cat produces less speed, which means excess immersion of the hulls renders the boat sluggish . The hull submersion also reduces the bridge deck clearance, promoting uncomfortable hull slamming.

You won’t find much difference in top speed between performance catamarans bearing similar lengths because they all have displacement hulls and mostly sail to hull speed with occasional surfing. This means that under skilled hands, these cats should exhibit roughly the same performance. A cruising cat’s performance is also highly dependent on the state of the sea, wind direction, and speed, amongst many other factors.

What To Consider When Choosing a Performance Cruising Catamaran

Speed is the number one consideration when choosing a high-speed cruising cat. Yet there are other factors just as important since they contribute to the overall cruising performance, including:

  •  What you’ll use the vessel for and where. Are you planning on doing coastal cruising or serious offshore cruising? Consider the number of people that you’ll be sailing with and the activities you’ll engage in. This also helps determine the size catamaran you’ll need.
  • Comfort. While some racing enthusiasts might prefer spartan accommodation plans, most enjoy relative comfort on the high seas. In any case, modern high-speed cruising cats are designed to provide a certain level of creature comforts. And since most performance cats are custom-made, new boat owners may decide precisely which features to include in their cats.
  • Quality. To produce light boats, builders employ the use of fine resins, carbon, epoxies, foam cores, and fiberglass. They build using a combination of vacuum-bagged techniques, foam cores, foam composite bulkheads, and make furniture and cabinetry with cored sandwich construction .
  • Livability. One cannot underrate the appeal of sailing in a vessel with no heeling, not to mention the high privacy attained from separate living and sleeping areas. Panoramic views and exceptional deck space for lounging and entertaining are also essential in ensuring maximum cruising comfort. Fortunately, most high-speed cruising cats offer all these features and more.
  • Equipment. Sailing upwind is a challenge for cruising cats since they tend to make lots of leeway. To make things easier, high-speed cruising cats come equipped with bigger rigs and either daggerboards or centerboards. However, this also means skilled sailors are required to operate them.
  • Cost. Catamarans are generally expensive, but a cat built with longer, leaner hulls and less costly materials can still give an outstanding performance. Such materials include foam cores, epoxy bulkheads, and epoxy resins. Furthermore, it’s not necessary to use only carbon to build a lightweight boat.

Final Thoughts

Performance cruising catamarans are built using exotic, high-tech, lightweight materials to deliver an electrifying sailing experience. And as we’ve seen from the above list, these boats deliver performance plus much more. They’re not only speed cruisers, but they also provide a smooth, comfortable, and enjoyable cruising experience.

So, whichever option you go for – from the luxurious Gunboat 62 to the much more affordable Nautitech 44 – you’re sure to get a boat that suits your needs.

Based on Lagoon’s Seventy 7 model, the newcomer was built in Bordeaux, France. The cat features six generous staterooms for up to 12 guests and cabins for four crew. Ponant says seafarers can expect personalized service, including a private chef, tailored activities, and other high-end touches.

“The concept and design of this Lagoon Seventy 7 yacht has been praised by everyone in the industry, won over by the spacious interior and exterior areas,” Guillaume Le Brec, the experienced skipper in charge of this project at Ponant, said in a statement. “Guests will really appreciate the high-end finishings as much as her exceptional sailing qualities.”

Furthermore, the itineraries are completely customizable, too. The inaugural seven-night roundtrip voyages from Bonifacio can be tweaked to the traveler’s interests, with the captain offering recommendations. After a stint in Corsica, Spirit of Ponant will cruise around Mahé, a.k.a. the largest island in the Seychelles archipelago, for the winter season.

Getting Started: How to Sail a Hobie Cat Catamaran – A Step-by-Step Guide

Welcome to our step-by-step guide on how to sail a Hobie Cat catamaran! Whether you’re a sailing enthusiast looking for a new challenge or a beginner eager to learn the ropes, this guide will walk you through the process of getting started with your Hobie Cat adventure. So grab your sailor’s hat and let’s set sail!

Step 1: Familiarize Yourself with the Hobie Cat

Before venturing out onto the water, it’s important to get acquainted with your Hobie Cat catamaran. Take some time to study its features, such as the trampoline netting in between the two hulls, where you’ll be spending most of your time. Make sure all the equipment is in good condition and double-check that you have all necessary safety gear on board.

Step 2: Rigging Your Hobie Cat

Rigging may sound intimidating at first, but fear not! It simply refers to setting up your boat for sailing. Start by attaching the mast to the mast base and stepping it into position on the hulls. Ensure that everything is securely fastened according to manufacturer guidelines.

Next, attach and adjust the main sail and jib sails using their respective halyards and sheets. This involves hoisting them up using pulley systems and securing them properly.

Step 3: Understanding Sail Controls

Now that your Hobie Cat is rigged up and ready to go, it’s time to familiarize yourself with sail controls. The mainsheet controls the main sail, while jib sheet control adjusts the jib sail. These control lines are typically color-coded for ease of use.

Experiment with tightening or loosening these lines while noting how they affect your boat’s speed and maneuverability. Remember, practice makes perfect when it comes to understanding how different adjustments impact your sailing experience.

Step 4: Launching Your Hobie Cat

With rigging complete and an understanding of sail controls, it’s time to launch your Hobie Cat into the water. Carefully push the boat off its storage location and lower the rudder down into position. If you’re launching from a beach, make sure to do so perpendicular to the shoreline, as this will reduce the risk of getting stuck in shallow water.

Step 5: Starting Out

Once you’re on the water, it’s essential to understand how wind direction and speed can influence your sailing experience. Begin by positioning yourself at a 45-degree angle relative to the wind—this is known as a close reach. This angle allows for optimum control and speed.

To set sail, release tension on the mainsheet slightly before gently pulling it in towards you. Keep an eye out for any luffing (fluttering) of your sails, which means they are not catching enough wind. Make minor adjustments to ensure they remain fully filled with air.

Step 6: Practice Tacking and Jibing

Tacking and jibing are essential maneuvers that allow you to change direction while sailing upwind or downwind respectively. To tack, turn your boat through the wind until it changes direction entirely—essentially flipping sides. To jibe, move across from one tack to another while turning downwind.

These maneuvers require practice and careful coordination between steering and sail adjustments. Start by practicing them in open waters until you feel confident in executing these turns smoothly.

Step 7: Safety First!

As with any maritime activity, safety should be paramount during your Hobie Cat adventures. Always wear a personal flotation device (PFD) while sailing and familiarize yourself with local boating regulations.

Before setting sail, check weather conditions and keep an eye on changing patterns while on the water. Never hesitate to return to shore if conditions deteriorate or become unsafe.

In conclusion, sailing a Hobie Cat catamaran offers exhilarating fun for enthusiasts of all experience levels. By following this step-by-step guide, you’ll be well on your way to mastering the art of sailing a Hobie Cat and enjoying unforgettable adventures on the water. So hoist those sails, grab the wind, and let your Hobie Cat carry you to new horizons!

From Beginner to Pro: Mastering the Art of Sailing a Hobie Cat Catamaran

Ahoy, adventure seekers! If you have ever gazed longingly at sailboats gliding gracefully across the water and wondered what it would be like to commandeer such a vessel, then you’ve come to the right place. In this blog post, we are going to delve into the exhilarating world of sailing and explore how to go from a beginner to a pro in mastering the art of sailing a Hobie Cat catamaran.

Setting Sail with the Hobie Cat: The Beginning

Before we hoist those sails and feel the wind in our hair, let’s take a moment to appreciate why sailing on a Hobie Cat catamaran is such an extraordinary experience. The sleek design of these twin-hull wonders offers stability, speed, and maneuverability like no other vessel. Whether you’re gliding across serene lakes or tackling daring waves on open seas, riding on a Hobie Cat feels like dancing with nature herself.

1. Learn the Ropes:

As with any new skill, sailing requires knowledge and practice. So, let’s start by understanding some key terminology before stepping on board:

– Port Side: The left side of the boat when facing forward. – Starboard Side: The right side of the boat when facing forward. – Bow: The front part of the boat. – Stern: The back part of the boat.

2. Safety First:

Before embarking on your seafaring voyage, safety should always be your top priority. Make sure that you have essential safety gear such as life jackets, flares, whistle, and a first aid kit readily available onboard. Remember that unexpected events can occur while at sea; being prepared can be a lifesaver!

3. Rigging Your Sails:

Once you have taken care of safety measures, it’s time to rig up your sails! Hobie Cat catamaran sails consist of a mainsail and a jib. Start by carefully attaching the mast to the base and then hoist up the mainsail. The mainsheet, the line connected to the lower corner of the sail, will allow you to control its angle and power.

4. Understanding Wind Dynamics:

The wind is our ally on this sailing journey. To master the art of sailing, we need to grasp basic wind dynamics. Sailing into the wind is known as “beating,” whereas traveling with the wind behind us is called “running.” Learning how to maneuver our sails in line with these directions will allow us to navigate swiftly and efficiently.

Navigating like a Pro: Taking Your Skills to New Heights

1. Mastering Points of Sail:

Points of sail are different angles at which we can adjust our sails according to wind direction. The main points of sail include close-hauled, beam reach, broad reach, and running downwind. By deftly trimming your sails based on these points, you can steer your Hobie Cat with finesse.

2. Embracing Tacking and Jibing:

Tacking and jibing are essential maneuvers that allow us to change our boat’s direction effectively without losing momentum. Tacking involves turning through the wind while bringing your bow through it, while jibing involves changing course by bringing your stern across the wind.

3. Handling Unexpected Situations:

As any seasoned sailor knows, unexpected situations can arise while out on the water: equipment failures, sudden gusts of wind, or even capsizing! Being mentally prepared for such scenarios and having practiced recovery techniques can be invaluable when ensuring your safety and avoiding panic.

Becoming a Captain of Adventure

Congratulations! With consistent practice and a hunger for knowledge, you’re well on your way from being a beginner to becoming a pro at sailing a Hobie Cat catamaran. As in any art form, remember that mastery comes with time and experiences. So, keep pushing the boundaries, exploring new horizons, and embracing the wondrous journey that sailing a Hobie Cat offers.

In Conclusion:

Sailing a Hobie Cat catamaran is an invigorating pursuit that rewards perseverance and curiosity. From learning the terminology to understanding wind dynamics and mastering maneuvers like tacking and jibing, your journey from beginner to pro will be filled with excitement, challenges, and pure bliss. So hop on board your Hobie Cat, set sail towards adventure, and let the winds guide you toward an ocean of possibilities!

Cruising the Moskva River: A short guide to boat trips in Russia’s capital

top cat sailing catamaran

There’s hardly a better way to absorb Moscow’s atmosphere than on a ship sailing up and down the Moskva River. While complicated ticketing, loud music and chilling winds might dampen the anticipated fun, this checklist will help you to enjoy the scenic views and not fall into common tourist traps.

How to find the right boat?

There are plenty of boats and selecting the right one might be challenging. The size of the boat should be your main criteria.

Plenty of small boats cruise the Moskva River, and the most vivid one is this yellow Lay’s-branded boat. Everyone who has ever visited Moscow probably has seen it.

This option might leave a passenger disembarking partially deaf as the merciless Russian pop music blasts onboard. A free spirit, however, will find partying on such a vessel to be an unforgettable and authentic experience that’s almost a metaphor for life in modern Russia: too loud, and sometimes too welcoming. Tickets start at $13 (800 rubles) per person.

Bigger boats offer smoother sailing and tend to attract foreign visitors because of their distinct Soviet aura. Indeed, many of the older vessels must have seen better days. They are still afloat, however, and getting aboard is a unique ‘cultural’ experience. Sometimes the crew might offer lunch or dinner to passengers, but this option must be purchased with the ticket. Here is one such  option  offering dinner for $24 (1,490 rubles).

If you want to travel in style, consider Flotilla Radisson. These large, modern vessels are quite posh, with a cozy restaurant and an attentive crew at your service. Even though the selection of wines and food is modest, these vessels are still much better than other boats.

top cat sailing catamaran

Surprisingly, the luxurious boats are priced rather modestly, and a single ticket goes for $17-$32 (1,100-2,000 rubles); also expect a reasonable restaurant bill on top.

How to buy tickets?

Women holding photos of ships promise huge discounts to “the young and beautiful,” and give personal invitations for river tours. They sound and look nice, but there’s a small catch: their ticket prices are usually more than those purchased online.

“We bought tickets from street hawkers for 900 rubles each, only to later discover that the other passengers bought their tickets twice as cheap!”  wrote  (in Russian) a disappointed Rostislav on a travel company website.

Nevertheless, buying from street hawkers has one considerable advantage: they personally escort you to the vessel so that you don’t waste time looking for the boat on your own.

Prices start at $13 (800 rubles) for one ride, and for an additional $6.5 (400 rubles) you can purchase an unlimited number of tours on the same boat on any given day.

Flotilla Radisson has official ticket offices at Gorky Park and Hotel Ukraine, but they’re often sold out.

Buying online is an option that might save some cash. Websites such as  this   offer considerable discounts for tickets sold online. On a busy Friday night an online purchase might be the only chance to get a ticket on a Flotilla Radisson boat.

This  website  (in Russian) offers multiple options for short river cruises in and around the city center, including offbeat options such as ‘disco cruises’ and ‘children cruises.’ This other  website  sells tickets online, but doesn’t have an English version. The interface is intuitive, however.

Buying tickets online has its bad points, however. The most common is confusing which pier you should go to and missing your river tour.

top cat sailing catamaran

“I once bought tickets online to save with the discount that the website offered,” said Igor Shvarkin from Moscow. “The pier was initially marked as ‘Park Kultury,’ but when I arrived it wasn’t easy to find my boat because there were too many there. My guests had to walk a considerable distance before I finally found the vessel that accepted my tickets purchased online,” said the man.

There are two main boarding piers in the city center:  Hotel Ukraine  and  Park Kultury . Always take note of your particular berth when buying tickets online.

Where to sit onboard?

Even on a warm day, the headwind might be chilly for passengers on deck. Make sure you have warm clothes, or that the crew has blankets ready upon request.

The glass-encased hold makes the tour much more comfortable, but not at the expense of having an enjoyable experience.

top cat sailing catamaran

Getting off the boat requires preparation as well. Ideally, you should be able to disembark on any pier along the way. In reality, passengers never know where the boat’s captain will make the next stop. Street hawkers often tell passengers in advance where they’ll be able to disembark. If you buy tickets online then you’ll have to research it yourself.

There’s a chance that the captain won’t make any stops at all and will take you back to where the tour began, which is the case with Flotilla Radisson. The safest option is to automatically expect that you’ll return to the pier where you started.

This story began in 2015, when Pierre-Henri Barbé decided to embark on the design of a catamaran that would combine performance and comfort. A reflection that stems from a personal dream of one day casting off on an ideal boat. It will be the EOS.

Designed by Christophe Barreau and Marc Lombard, renowned naval architects specializing in fast, seaworthy, light and comfortable cruising catamarans. Eos54 and Eos47.

Built in France (world leader in catamarans) by the F. Hervé shipyard (in La Rochelle), a guarantee of a high level of quality, optimizing the weight-to-power ratio in order to promote responsive sailing offering guarantees of safety.

EOS catamarans are intended for discerning sailors, amateurs and professionals alike, eager to rediscover the sensations linked to the finesse of the helm touch (including the tiller) of a sailboat capable of posting more than 15/20 knots at speed.

High-end deep-sea cruising catamaran, designed for long voyages or around the world. The Eos responds to the demand for a semi-tailor-made model for a living environment adapted to the wishes of its owners.

EOS 54: A NEW EXTREME CAT

Minimal Logo

Leggi l’articolo in italiano

As shown by the birth of new brands and ideas, the world of multi-hull boats is very lively. Next September, at the Grand Pavois Boat Show of La Rochelle (on the French Atlantic coast), EOS 54 , the father of a new series of catamarans, will be presented.

At the moment, it is under construction at  Marsaudon Composites, a yard seated in Lorient, the cradle of the popular French offshore sailing.

Marsaudon Composites is among the leaders in this field; it has built, for example, IDEC II ( now Qingdao), the 30-metre-long trimaran which, steered by Francis Joyon, broke the around-the-world tour record in 2008 (57 days, 13 hours, 23 minutes and 6 seconds), Paradox and Zed 6 , respectively a trimaran and a TS42 catamaran which climbed the podium of Fastnet last year.

dsc03671-2

EOS 54 belongs to Classic range , that one dedicated to cruise boats, conceived for experts, private, charter companies and hard navigations. EOS is not a floating villa for comfortable cruises. It is a fast catamarans, exactly like Outremere, Catana and so on.

It will be available also in a Race version and, later, in motor and hybrid version.

EOS points to be a luxury catamaran, completely open to customization . Standard interiors have 3 cabins, but the yard has already prepared some versions with 2,4,5 and 6 cabins.

The project is by  Christophe Barreau (the same designer of TS42, very poplular in France). EOS 54 is 16.5 metres long with a displacement of 12-13 tons. It is made in infusion fiberglass with kevlar elements. It has thin hulls and a fixed keel and it is provided with automatic sensors to release all sails’ sheets. The helmsman position is central and riggings are all in the cockpit.
