Zakynthos (Greek: Ζάκυνθος), the third largest of the Ionian Islands, covers an area of 410 km2 (158 sqmi) and its coastline has roughly 123 km length (76 mi). The island is named after Zakynthos, the son of a legendary Arcadian chief Dardanus. The name, like all similar names ending in -nthos, is pre-Mycenaean or Pelasgian in origin.

Sailing Holidays in Zakynthos

Zakynthos (Italian: Zante), besides Kythira, the southernmost island of the Ionian Islands, lies off the west coast of the Peloponnese. The western half of the island is occupied by a karstic plateau rising to 758 m, and the eastern half is occupied by a fertile and intensively cultivated alluvial plain with a luxuriant growth of vegetation. With its beautiful scenery and excellent bathing beaches making it the perfect setting for sailing, Zakynthos is very popular among yacht charterers and tourists in general. The big harbor of Zakynthos has a marina on the side of the jetty, where you can find any supply you might need for yourselves or your yacht. Sailing around the island, you will find many beaches to inspect, including the world-famous Navagio beach (Shipwreck Bay), a good anchorage with sandy bottom. The equally renowned Blue Caves are only accessible by boat, and in order to visit them, you should anchor in Agios Nikolaos bay and go there with your tender, tying to a small quay. In this area there are chilly underwater springs, ideal to dive in and explore the seabed. As you sail, watch out for the rare loggerhead turtles, “ Caretta caretta” , heading mainly towards the southern beaches of Zakynthos, Laganas in particular, to lay their eggs.

History of Zakynthos

Since the time of Homer, the island has been known by the name it still bears, said to derived from the wild hyacinth (Hyacinthus orientalis L.). Achaeans and Arcadians settled there since then, and soon developed the island into a center of trade and seafaring, whose in­fluence extended as far as the Iberian Peninsula, when they found­ed the col­ony of Za­kan­tha, later known as Saguntum.

Zakynthos was occupied by the Turks in 1479, but recovered two years later by the Venetians, who held it until 1797. The island has preserved an Italian and Venetian stamp, yet its eventful history and the major earthquakes of 1515 and 1953 destroyed most old buildings. Adding to these earthquakes, in 2018 there was a cliff collapse in the beach of Navagio (Shipwreck beach).

Ports and Local Amenities

The port of Zakynthos provides good shelter from the prevailing north-west winds, though, with a strong southerly, it is better to anchor in the south-west.

You should be careful in order to avoid the little reef (marked by a red buoy) just east of the entrance of the harbour. You should also note that there are few unlit mooring buoys towards the south-east of the harbour. The proposed marina is still not finished.

The Vromi bay is a deep inlet and the only anchorage on the west side of the island. In north-west or west winds, it provides good shelter, but you should still be aware of kat­abatic gusts.

Above the town, there are the remains of a Venetian Castle, which is believed to have collapsed in the 1515 earthquake.

The most beautiful beach of Zakynthos, one of the five or six most photographed beaches of all Greece, is called Navagio (Shipwreck beach), and is accessible only by sea, giving you the idea of hugeness and perfection. However you should be careful while getting closer, or attempting to anchor there, since there was a cliff colapse in September of 2018.

You can use your own boat and sail towards the Blue Caves. They consist of particular geologic formations giving life to a succession of caves along the North-West coast of the island, starting soon after Agios Nikolaos to end near Skinari Cape.

The third largest island in the Ionian Sea, Zakynthos Island (Zante) was known by the Venetians as the 'Flower of the East' thanks to its lush greenery that makes the Ionian island so fertile and beautiful. Today, it is one of the busiest tourist destinations in Greece thanks in part to the international airport that has links right across Europe but mostly due to its sheer beauty.

Though many tourists won't get much further than its beautiful beaches and renowned nightlife in Zakynthos Town, this jewel of an island has so much more to offer. Navagio Beach (Shipwreck Beach), accessed from Porto Vromi beach by water taxi, is a sandy beach only accessible by sea and would be quite beautiful in its own right even without the wrecked cigarette smuggler's ship that lies in the middle.

Close to the main marina on Zante, Agios Nikolaos Beach is one of the best on the island with its range of water sports available, or just to chill out in the turquoise waters. Elsewhere on Zakynthos you will find protected Caretta Caretta sea turtles and a species of seal that only lives in the Ionian Sea. Diving and snorkelling is an absolute must as there is at least as much to take in under the water as there is above!

7 days - Paxos,Cephalonia and Lefkada: Heading north for your shakedown cruise, head for Lixouri on the Paliki Peninsula of Cephalonia. From here, south, then north around the top of the island to Vasiliki on Lefkada, and then the next day head north again to Gaios on Paxos. South to Lefkada, berthing in Nydri Marina to feel the vibe of this idiosyncratic tourist town, before going to the hideaway port of Vathy on Ithaca. Zakynthos Town will be your chance to party for the final time before returning to Agios Nikolaos Marina.

Best Times To Hire A Yacht In Zakynthos

The sailing season runs from late April to October with July and August being the busiest months for yacht charter. Unlike the Aegean, the Ionian Sea is dominated by the Bora - the same wind that affects nearby Croatia. In summer this is far more benign and far more sailing friendly than the often beefy Meltemi. Building to a fun F5-6 in the afternoon from a zephyr in the morning, you can almost time your daily sailing by it.

The sea is cooler - often quite chilly - at the beginning of the sailing season but there is rainfall in Spring. As the days lengthen you will still see green fields and flowers in May and the winds can be quite benign too. Combined with the crowds being smaller, this suggests that May to early June are the sweet spot for an Ionian boat rental.

Come September and October the seas are still like a warm bath. With the wetter climate than the Aegean this is less of a problem so with the warm seas could be at least as good as the earlier months of the year.

Sailing Weather In Zakynthos

April to mid June: There is rainfall and the temperatures build steadily from the mid-teens to the mid 20 degree C range. There are sometimes cooler northerly winds, though the southerly Bora kicks in in around early May. There is more rainfall here than on Aegean Greece but you will soon find that a blessed relief from the heat!

Late June-August: You'll be unlucky if you see any rain, though it could be welcome in the summer heat. Temperatures are from 30s with recent hot days exceeding 40 - often hotter than the Aegean. The Bora often adds to the heat with its tropical origins.

September-October: The seas remain warm, as does the air. These months can be the best time of year to sailas the temperatures are often in the comfortable low to mid 20s though can touch 30C from time to time.

What should I consider when hiring a Yacht or Boat?

The main points to consider are what is your budget, have you got the necessary sailing experience and qualifications to manage the boat if it's not going to have a skipper, whom you are taking sailing, where exactly you wish to go and what will the weather be like on the proposed dates of your trip.

What are the Marinas on Zakynthos?

The main marina on Zakynthos is at Agios Nikolaos on the NE coast of the island. Taking 255 yachts, this is far bigger than the Port of Zakynthos in Zakynthos Town that only takes 30 vessels.

When are the best times to hire a boat in Zakynthos?

To avoid the summer heat and crowds, if you can get to Lefkas Island after autumn school term begins you will find the seas still warm, the air more comfortable and the marinas less crowded.

Do you have to pay a deposit when hiring a Yacht in Zante?

You will typically pay 50% up front on booking the yacht hire and the balance on arrival. You will either pay a security deposit with your credit card on departure or can get insurance covering damage in advance. In some cases (such as the recent Covid situation) charter companies may be more flexible but this depends on the individual charter companies themselves.

What happens if my Yacht breaks down?

If you are at sea and in danger, call MAYDAY on VHF Ch16 or ring the coast guard on your phone if you have reception. If you have a mechanical fault and can make it to or are on a mooring you will be able to phone a help line number given by the boat charter company.

What should I think of before I hire a Yacht or Boat in Zakynthos?

You should consider do you have the experience to handle the yacht charter or boat hire before you book and where do you want to go along with what the weather will be like. Bring warm weather and cool weather clothing if it looks like the weather can be cool as well as warm and remember at sea it can be cool on most evenings.

If you want to sail without a skipper then you will need relevant qualifications like RYA Day Skipper/International Certificate of Competence (ICC)/ASA 104 Bareboat certificate or the US Sailing Certificate. Yacht Charter Zakynthos

The arrow head Zakynthos is the third largest of the Ionian Islands, after Kefalonia and Corfu, with  an area of 406 square kilometers. The coastline has a length of 123 km. While the shape of the island resembles an irregular triangle based on the Gulf of Lagana, and top Cape Skinari in the north. According to the last census Zakynthos is the third most populous island in the Ionian Sea with a population of 41.000 inhabitants .

Zakynthos, also known by its Italian name Zante, battles against heavy package tourism along its eastern and southeast coasts. The island is essentially a beautiful one with western and central regions of forested mountains dropping off to unreal turquoise waters. The northern and southern capes remain verdant and less exploited, and Zante Town adds a bit of sparkle to the overrun east, where the loggerhead turtle population struggles in the face of development.

Zippy Zakynthos Town is the capital and port of the island and wraps round an enormous blue bay. The town was devastated by the 1953 earthquake, but was reconstructed with arcaded streets, imposing squares and gracious neoclassical public buildings. A Venetian fortress looks down from a hill on the hubbub of town life.

Amid all of the southern sprawl, Vasilikos Peninsula, bordering the Bay of Laganas, remains the most forested and serene. Nevertheless it has started to become developed. For example, Banana Beach, a long, narrow strip of golden sand on the peninsula’s northern side, sees crowds, water sports and umbrellas. Kaminia is a decent option. Zakynthos’ best beach, long, sandy Gerakas, is on the other side of the peninsula, facing into Laganas Bay. Please note, however, that this is one of the main turtlenesting beaches, and access is forbidden between dusk and dawn from May to October; follow conservation recommendations, available at the booth near the beach access path. With transport, you can reach the raw terrain of the far southwest of the island. Beyond the traditional village of Keri, a tiny road leads to Cape Keri and its lighthouse above sheer cliffs. Scenic and sometimes happily confusing roads lead north from here through beautiful wooded hill country where locals sell honey and other seasonal products. The route leads to the few land accessible west-coast coves such as Limnionas or Kambi and to inland gems like Kiliomeno, whose church of St Nikolaos features an unusual roofless campanile. The bell tower of the church in Agios Leon was formerly a windmill. Lovely Louha tumbles down a valley surrounded by woodlands and pastures. The east coast north of Zakynthos Town is filled with resorts but the further north you go, the more remote and charming the island becomes. The road narrows at the ferry village, Agios Nikolaos, where development is slight. Carry on to reach pastoral, breezy Cape Skinari .

Worthy of attention the famous Shipwreck beach, magnificent photos of which grace every tourist brochure about Zakynthos and even Greece. It is in Navagio Bay, about 3km west of Volimes at the northwest tip of the island. In low season it is, indeed worthwhile visiting it but in the high season it overcrowded.

Zakynthos lies in the eastern part of the Ionian sea, around 12 miles west of the Greek Peloponnese mainland. The exact geographic coordinates are 37°47’28.7″N 20°53’53.4″E in Ionian Sea in Greece. The island of Kefalonia lies 9 miles on the north. It is the southernmost of the main group of the Ionian islands (not counting distant Kythira). Zakynthos is about 25 miles long and 12 miles wide, and covers an area of 158 sq miles. It’s coastline is approximately 76 miles long. According to the last census, the island has a population of 45,650. The highest point is Vrachionas, at 758 m.

Explore historical Zakynthos

The Venetian Tower is a remnant of the Venetian rule over the island in 1484, who also called Zakynthos the Flower of the East . Be aware that this doesn’t include the extra costs for fuel you have to keep in mind in addition to your bareboat charter. Rent a catamaran in Greece for an average price of 150 EUR per person per day. If you are a more experienced sailor and want to rent something adventurous, but still affordable, you should rent a gulet in Greece at an average price of 105 EUR per person per day. It costs 93 EUR per person per day on average to rent a RIB. However, bear in mind that RIBs are only suitable as day charters, not for overnight stays.
