Peninsula to supply biofuel in Gibraltar
Chris warde details how greater transparency within the biofuel supply chains will help decarbonise yachting in the med….
Peninsula will supply biofuels to yacht owners in the Gibraltar Strait and surrounding areas having recently received its International Sustainability and Carbon Certification (ISCC). The fuel provider can now track the sustainability credentials of fuel from source to supply, enabling its customers to calculate their carbon emission reductions when using biofuel.
“What this does for yacht owners is remove the vagueness around the benefits of biofuels and allows them to see what their carbon [emission] reductions are,” Chris Warde, Head of Peninsula Yacht Services tells the Superyacht Group. “This not only includes their fuel consumption but also takes into account the feedstock, production and transportation of the fuel to their boat.”
European commercial shipping now has legislation requiring ships to calculate their carbon footprint under the FuelEU Maritime. “But yachting doesn’t have that yet, which is why the ISCC is great as it provides that transparency,” continues Warde, adding that this is imperative considering there are no local biofuel producers in Gibraltar.
“You only have to look at the work of the YETI tool from Water Revolution Foundation , or SEA index out of Monaco to understand that it’s not just the impact at use that needs to be measured and reduced to improve our environmental footprint.”
Warde highlights that the use of second-generation feedstocks is key to lowering emissions and providing a viable source of low-carbon fuel. First-generation feedstock refers to crops grown specifically for the purpose of producing biofuels on land that could be used to produce food. “Whilst second-generation feedstocks are mainly from agricultural waste and used cooking oils that do not compete with food production,” he says.
Biofuel produced using second-generation feedstock has the potential to cut a yacht’s carbon fuel emissions by 90%, according to Peninsula. Average reductions however are estimated to be between 75% to 90%.
The ISCC certification system would then provide fully traceable information on the fuel. To ensure that its marine fuels can be fully certified, the ISCC assesses everything from farm level to the moment the fuel is onboard. Each company in the supply chain is audited annually to ensure they are meeting and continuing to meet ISCC’s required standards and specifications.
“We can now provide yacht owners with the evidence of their fuel’s environmental impact,” says Warde. “This way, they can understand what is actually happening, giving them providence over their fuel consumption.”

Peninsula Targets Yacht Owners for Gibraltar Biofuel Bunker Sales
Peninsula first announced its plan to supply biofuel blends in the Gibraltar Strait in February. File Image / Pixabay
Global marine fuel supplier and trading firm Peninsula will be seeking to persuade yacht owners to become customers of its biofuel blend supply operation in the Gibraltar Strait .
The firm will be targeting yacht owners seeking to demonstrate a reduction in their GHG emissions, news provider Superyacht News reported earlier this month. The firm's ISCC certification will give owners more visibility over the environmental credentials of their fuel, the report cited Chris Warde , head of Peninsula Yacht Services , as saying.
"What this does for yacht owners is remove the vagueness around the benefits of biofuels and allows them to see what their carbon [emission] reductions are," the report cited Warde as saying.
"This not only includes their fuel consumption but also takes into account the feedstock, production and transportation of the fuel to their boat."
Demand for biofuel bunker blends is increasing as shipowners take them on as a drop-in replacement for conventional fuels with a lower carbon footprint, allowing them to reduce GHG emissions without investing in new ships capable of running on other alternative fuels.

Yachts And Fuel – How Much Do They Really Consume?
Fuel is one of many annual running costs of a yacht. Not only does the yacht need fuel for cruising; the generators require it to keep the vessel running while at anchor and underway. As well as this, many of the water sports toys require it too.
Some yachts cross the Atlantic Ocean twice a year between the Mediterranean and Caribbean while others embark on world cruises. That equates to a lot of fuel.
So How Much Do They Really Consume?
According to the Yachting Pages, the longest Superyacht in the world, 180m M/Y Azzam, holds 1,000,000 litres of fuel. To put it into perspective, that is the equivalent of filling a regular hatchback car 23,800 times. Or, six Boeing 747 commercial airliners.
West Nautical’s Vessel Manager, Tony Hildrew, a former Yacht Chief Engineer said:
“Fuel is the single biggest expense when it comes to yacht operations, it is estimated that the global spend on fuel is around $150bn annually however this shouldn’t put you off, there are a number of ways to ensure your fuel consumption doesn’t get out of hand. Implementing a Ships Energy Efficiency Management Plan or SEEMP for short is a great way to keep fuel costs down without compromising on your cruising experience.”
Each yacht will consume fuel differently for a number of reasons. It could be the size and make of the engines. Or, how often the yacht is using generators. As well as the number of tenders and water sports toys on board that require fuel. For example, if the yacht is out at anchor and running on generators 90% of the time, the fuel consumption will be much higher than a yacht that is in a marina at night and connected to shore power and water.
Another factor that will affect fuel consumption is the yacht’s itinerary. This is because the sea conditions will impact how much fuel the engines consume.
How Is Consumption Measured?
You will be able to input the start and ending points of your cruise on the map. This will automatically update the distance table. The next step is to enter the speed, fuel consumption and cost of fuel per litre to determine the cost of the trip.
Here is an example: A fast 30m yacht cruising at 20 knots will consume roughly 400 – 500 litres depending on the engine type. This would equate to the total consumption of 2500 litres for a distance of 100 nautical miles.
Another example is, a 70m yacht looking to travel 100 nautical miles with the engines burning 1000 litres per hour would add up to a total consumption of 8335L for that passage. Depending on where the yacht bunkered, the estimated cost with the price per litre being on the low end at €0.90 per litre would cost a total of €7501.50. An example of a 100 nautical mile passage would take you from Saint Tropez to The North Coast of Corsica.
How Much Does It Cost?
Fuel prices fluctuate depending on which country you bunker in and some places you bunker offer tax free fuel such a Gibraltar and Montenegro. Fuel prices can vary but typically costs between €0.80 and €1.30 per litre.
Yacht charter, sales and management company West Nautical added:
“Fuel costs should be at the top of any yacht owner and captain’s minds for two reasons: to minimise costs as well as reduce the environmental impact of burning unnecessary fuel. The superyacht charter market, more than most other markets, relies on pristine waters for their guests to enjoy their holiday. If the oceans in popular charter destinations are not maintained, it will decrease the demand for yacht charter and therefore the revenue for owners.” “If you are looking for expertise in operational management and engineering in order to plan a SEEMP, West Nautical would be delighted to assist.”

Yacht charter, sales and management company West Nautical added; “Fuel costs should be at the top of any yacht owner and captain's minds for two reasons: to minimise costs as well as reduce the environmental impact of burning unnecessary fuel.

Dose any one know the current price of boat transit Diesel in Gibraltar ?
Well-known member
About £1.05/l, Ceuta is slightly cheaper at around €1.15/l. If you can find a supply, Morocco should be best at just under 60p/l but Smir had no stock as of a month ago, worth a call to check current situation.
Thanks for your reply ,i was wondering Is that a tax free price as we would be only passing through Gib,also if we go to Morocco is the in and out papers expensive ?

Hiya. There are no charges for entering or leaving Morocco. Tangier has recently been full and turning away visitors, big new marina planned. Last week Smir diesel dock was blocked off by a dredger. For latest info, phone +212 39977. The girls in the office speak good English. There is no transit rate...I just rang Cepsa! Today price £1.013. Rate for over 500l, 0.913. The old Shell and BP docks have changed. 2 companies, Gib Oil and Cepsa (Spanish) are now the bunker people. For latest, Cepsa 00350200 60686, Gib Oil, 00350 200 03400 Hope this helps, CS
Thanks for info,do you know of a good marina at Gib?

La Linea Marina prices ? Does anybody in Gib know the fees charged across the border for daily mooring in June/July for 9 m yacht. As ever many thanks for all replies David.
All info here http://eng.puertodeportivoalcaidesa.es/
Any updates regarding the fuel situation in Smir. Just doing a little preplanning ..
Sorry to resurrect an old thread, but I have, and perhaps people familiar with GiB can help. If I enter Gib, just to refuel and leave again, do I need to report to customs and do the whole paperwork thing?, and thus should do do the same when reentering Spain.

Provided you go to the fuel dock beside the runway and Ocean Village you do not need to clear in. Just do not go to one of the two marina's. When you enter Spain afterwards give your last port of staying as the last port. The Spanish customs and Guardia Civil have a very efficient tracking system via the form everybody has to complete on their arrival at a marina in Spain. I was in Smir a short time ago and the dredger was not on the fuel dock. They use the dredger a lot because of silting so the availability of fuel can vary from day to day. Ceuta always has fuel and its close to Smir. Michael

When I filled a couple of weeks ago, the discount was for over 100l so you will be in, but last Monday I only got 50l but discount applied. CEPSA dock, no reason given but we are regular customers. There is no red diesel, that's a UK thing. One of Gibs major revenue streams involves bunkering. Sometimes up to 30 ships a day visit Gib for duty free bunkers, so Sybarite, the answer is a very definite yes! Bunkering is also carried out on the Spanish side of the Bay and across in Ceuta. 'Dodge the Tanker' is the local yachtsmans challenge!

Bringing this back up! We'll be in Gibraltar at the end of the month and I was wondering what the fuel prices are like. I found a website from CEPSA that advertises 60p for diesel and 73p for petrol, however this has not changed in the past two months, so I wonder if it is current. Site: http://www.cepsagibyachtfuels.com/home.php I also assume this is in Pound Sterling. The price... doesn't seem great.

The price of fuel can vary because of the market price, but it can also depend on whether the yacht is a private or a commercial one. Duty-free diesel is much less expensive, but it is subject to many regulations to be used. Within the price, there are also other costs, such as port taxes, which can vary from 1 cent per liter to 5 cents per liter.
