The coastal waters around Adelaide are home to a rich diversity of marine life. During your yacht charter, you may have the chance to spot dolphins frolicking in the surf or seals basking on the rocks. The region is also a birdwatcher’s paradise with numerous species gracing the skies and shores.

What Choose

Sailing boat or Catamaran, what to sail in Adelaide

Embarking on a sailing adventure in Adelaide, South Australia with Yachting.Rent gives you the power to choose between the exhilarating speed of a sailing boat or the luxurious comfort of a catamaran. Both options offer unique advantages, making your journey on the waters of the Gulf St. Vincent an unforgettable experience.

Sailing boats are the traditional choice for those seeking to experience the thrill of harnessing the wind. Agile and responsive, sailing boats offer a hands-on experience and the opportunity to learn the craft of sailing. With a lean hull, they are built for speed, slicing through the waves, and can take you to your destination quickly. They are perfect for day trips, weekend getaways, or challenging sailing adventures across longer distances.

On the other hand, catamarans provide an entirely different sailing experience. With their two hulls, catamarans offer greater stability, making them an ideal choice for those seeking a relaxed and comfortable voyage. They are excellent for families or groups as they provide more space and comfort, with expansive decks and cabins for everyone to stretch out and relax. Their shallow draft also allows you to anchor closer to the shore, perfect for exploring Adelaide’s coastline and secluded coves.

Adelaide’s consistent winds and calm waters make it an excellent destination for both types of vessels. The sailing boat can take advantage of the steady breezes for a swift and exciting sail, while the catamaran can offer a stable and comfortable cruise to enjoy the picturesque coastline.

Whether you’re a seasoned sailor eager to feel the wind in your sails, or a relaxed cruiser looking to soak up the sun on a spacious deck, Yachting.Rent can provide the perfect vessel for your adventure. So, sailboat or catamaran? The choice is yours. Set sail in Adelaide, South Australia, and make lasting memories on the azure waters.

OUR HISTORY

The Royal South Australian Yacht Squadron (RSAYS) began its life as the South Australian Yacht Club (SAYC) on 5 November 1869. On 25 October 1890, Her Majesty Queen Victoria granted the title Royal South Australian Yacht Squadron, which it has borne ever since. The Admiralty Warrant, authorising wearing of the Blue Ensign was dated 4 November 1890.

The first race was held on 1 January 1870, with four competing yachts; the Curlew, Isabella, White Squall and Express. They ranged in waterline length from 13 to 19 feet. From the original clubhouse in Birkenhead, to the current location in Outer Harbor, the Squadron has a proud history as the original home of Sailing in South Australia.

For more information on the History of the RSAYS, our diligent and dedicated History Group have put an extensive archive together for public perusal.

The Best Boat Hire in Adelaide

Disclosure: We love how our audience helps us grow. This post may contain affiliate links. Please check our disclosure policy for more information.

Adelaide is blessed with a beautiful coastline just waiting to be explored. Over the last few years, local boat rentals that offer private boat hire in Adelaide have been popping up all around the city! Compared to the East Coast, there are only a select few to choose from. But know that the teams running these hire operations are super passionate due to the amount of South Australian red tape they’ve had to get through to get up and running!

yacht in adelaide

Whether you are looking for your next serious fishing boat hire, boat tuition to get more confidence, cruising along with friends and family on a lazy weekend, fun watersports, the ultimate party boat, a day on the water celebrating Australia Day or just to chill out, there really is something for everyone.

And let’s admit it, owning a boat can be a bit of a hassle . And an expensive hassle too! But by hiring a boat with one of these self-drive boat hires, not only do they launch and retrieve the boat for you (saving valuable time and stress queuing at the boat ramp), they offer induction and safety briefings, all the safety equipment needed and advice on local destinations and fishing spots. To make the experience even better, they also offer equipment to hire (fishing rods, eskies, etc), bait to purchase as well as an ultimate finale – cleaning the boat for you at the end of a windswept day. Perfect!

All of these reasons are why we chose to sell our boat and just hire one whenever we wanted to get out on the water. This has undoubtedly been cheaper over a 12 month period and much less hassle!

There is a range of self-drive hires where a boat licence is required. But there are also tuition hires, BBQ boats, River Cruisers and Charter hires where a boat licence isn’t needed to get you out on the water in no time! All of these boat rentals are within close proximity of Adelaide’s CBD.

Why not also check out our Top 12 Adelaide Boat Trips & Water Adventures post for the best water experiences – no boat licence required! Or thinking about getting your licence? Find out how to get your South Australian Boat Licence in this post or  find a local boat licence course near you .

We’ve done our fair share of boat hiring across Adelaide, and here are some of our favourites:

Self-Drive Boat Hire

1. b.a. boat hire.

What we love about Ben and his team at B.A. Boat Hire is that they’ve grown over the past couple of years to become one of the best Boat Hires in Adelaide. They now have 2 boats in the water – their 4.8m Bluefin Weekender and their new addition, a 6.5 Amara Centre Cabin – both perfect for South Australian Waters.

Check out our post about spending a day out on the water with B.A. Boat Hire or if you want to find out more about Ben and the team, read this informative conversation we had all about their boat hire in Adelaide and across South Australia .

B.A. Boat Hire also offers a range of Adelaide Fishing Charters to make it even easier for you to get out on the water!

The Vessels

Both vessels require a boat licence and are already available in the water, so you can walk on and walk off from North Haven or West Beach boat ramps. Both vessels are also available for towing to create your own adventure! Hire is available for half days, full days, weekends and extended hires.

Two vessels available from BA Boat Hire Adelaide - the Bluefin Weekender and the Amara Centre Cab pictured side by side

Their smaller vessel, the Bluefin Weekender, licensed for 4 passengers, is ideal for someone who has just passed their boat licence or looking for an easy cruise, as this vessel is one of the easiest around to operate. With a 60hp Mercury 4-stroke engine, we can vouch for this easy handling as we loved the morning cruise we took last year in the Weekender! It’s stable, reactive, reliable and perfect for us bagging out on crabs during a stunning autumn morning.

The Bluefin Weekender vessel in the water at North Haven Boat Ramp, available to hire from BA Boat Hire Adelaide

Their newer, larger vessel, the Amara Centre Cabin, licensed for 6 passengers, is for the more serious water adventure. Centre Cabs are known for making some seriously dedicated fishing simple with their large decks and walk-around cabs, but easy work for a great family day out with plenty of room for 6 people. The added bonus to the Centre Cab is that it comes with a toilet for those full days out on the water.

The Amara Centre Cab available from B.A. Boat Hire Adelaide, pictured at North Haven Boat Ramp

Both vessels come with peace of mind that they are AMSA surveyed, have all quality safety equipment on board, Hummingbird GPS/fish finders with pre-loaded fishing spots, rod holders, bait boards, radio and shade – either a shade cover or the centre cab.

B.A. Boat Hire can also make quality fishing gear, eskies, and tackle boxes available at an additional cost for the perfect hassle-free day.

B.A. Boat can be launched from North Haven Boat Ramp and West Beach Boat Ramp.

Alternatively, you can tow the boat and trailer yourself (depending on meeting vehicle requirements) and head towards the Murray River, Riverland, Fleurieu Peninsula, Yorke Peninsula and beyond!

Boat tuition is also available – a boat licence is required.

Check out their website for more details, how to book and FAQ’s including the weights of each vessel if considering towing.

2. Port Adelaide Boat Hire

***Port Adelaide Boat Hire is no longer in operation***

The team at Port Adelaide are the latest kids on the block, turning Port Adelaide into the water playground it deserves. The Port is changing with so much residential and commercial development going on, so remember to book ahead with these guys as this area is getting busier and busier.

What started out as a couple of tinnies available from St. Kilda, Port Adelaide Boat Hire has grown into a daily operation from Port Adelaide Wharf. You can’t miss their blue information shed right on the water’s edge and offer a range of activities, not just boat hire.

Port Adelaide Boat Hire has 2 vessels – their 6.1m Bar Crusher, one of Australia’s favourite boats, and a 4m Tinny, both available for hire. For you to take the boat out on your own, you will need a valid boat licence that can be readily launched. And it’s not just Port Adelaide you can leave from. They also launch from North Haven boat ramp, Snowdens Beach and St. Kilda.

Port Adelaide Boat Hire vessel docked in the water

If we can give one bit of advice when it comes to using Port Adelaide Boat Hire, it is to consider where you are launching from. If you want to head out to sea from Port Adelaide, remember that it can take around 45 mins when sticking to the speed restrictions to travel along the Port River and Lipson Reach to reach the open water. Whilst this is a great way to explore the history and industry along South Australia’s largest port, it can be time-consuming, especially during a half-day hire. You would be better off launching straight from North Haven. Alternatively, have a chat with the team and see if you can launch and return from different locations.

Boat Tuition

Port Adelaide Boat Hire also offers a unique service in South Australia. Boat Tuition is available for anyone thinking about getting their South Australian boat licence or recently got one. Getting a boat licence in South Australia is one of the few licences you can get without actually having to do any practical assessment so offering this service makes perfect sense.

Maybe this is ideal for you if you are looking to get some extra confidence or have never driven a boat before. It would also make a perfect gift for someone special who is in the same boat (pun intended!). It could even be that you are considering purchasing a Bar Crusher – a perfect way to try before you buy.

Hire a boat in Adelaide

Their boat tuition experience takes you through everything you need to know to be your very own skipper. From launching, handling, towing and steering, your ability to handle a boat in and out of the water will no doubt be greatly improved. And the best bit is, you can custom this tuition to your needs. If you know you’ll only ever use a tinny, perfect, just learn by using theirs. Or if you want to go big and bold, get behind the Bar Crusher and find out what Australia’s addiction to boating is all about!

You can choose how long and where you feel you’d like to improve. Alternatively, they can work out a perfect beginners course to give you the skills and knowledge you need for your boat licence, or to reinforce what you just learnt by sitting your licence. Tuition takes place along the Port River, which is an ideal environment to learn in – often protected by the elements, reasonably calm most of the year and plenty of space to perfect those turns.

Advanced boating tuition sessions are also available that include boat hire, fuel and tuition.

For more information about their boat tuition, check out their website.

Other activities

They also offer some other family activities to help get you out on the water.

Jump onboard their new Eco Tours, one of the few small boat tours available in Adelaide. Take the popular 2-hour tour as you venture right into the depths of the Port River, sharing the resident dolphins’ playground and exploring areas many cannot get to. Being on a smaller vessel, you can get amongst the mangroves, weave between the shipwrecks and spot as much wildlife as your eyes can take. Why not custom your own trip, perhaps even a night river tour?! Did we tell you Port Adelaide was seriously haunted?!

Or how about taking out one of their Paddle Boats and relaxing along the river…

Paddle Boats on the Port River, Port Adelaide

Fancy kayaking? Explore all the hard to get to places, head towards Garden Island, watch out for playful dolphins who love to be nosey and discover the mysterious shipyard graves amongst the mangroves. The ideal way to have a water adventure at your own pace!

If you are looking for more information about Port Adelaide, check out our Port Adelaide Destination Guide for how to make the most of this unique South Australian Port!

3. SA Boat Hire

SA Boat Hire is one of the longest-standing boat hire companies in Adelaide. Located in North Haven, the boat can be moored ready for your launch, or you can tow it to your destination. It comes fully equipped with all safety equipment, a Bimini for sun protection, GPS with fishing locations and a fish finder. SA Boat Hire also offers a range of other equipment to help make your adventure on the water hassle-free.

We personally don’t have experience with SA Boat Hire. After trying several times to book, we found the response to be that it was fully booked/unavailable. This may have changed with new boat hire operations now in full force in Adelaide, but just something we wanted to make you aware of.

SA Boat Hire offers an 1802 Trophy Fishing Boat with either a 2 or 4 stroke engine. This vessel is a good size to walk around, perfect when fishing or cruising along enjoying the sun. This is also a cut-out cabin making an ideal space to relax or get out of the elements if needed.

1802 Walkabout Trophy boat for hire from SA Boat Hire Adelaide

Services are offered for full days only with a difference in pricing for walk on, walk off and pick up and tow options.

A bond of $1000 is required and will be refunded provided there is no damage to the vessel or equipment.

For more information, check out their website.

4. Show & Go

Show & Go, located on Brighton Road, Somerton Park, are more known for its motorcycle rentals but does also have a couple of boats for hire. These boats are available on trailers only and not for a walk on, walk off service.

We also don’t have experience in using Show & Go hire services as we struggled with their availability. However, we have seen the boats at the back of their store in Somerton Park, and all we can say is that they look well used. We got the impression when trying to book that regulars use these vessels and have done for a while. That’s all we are saying!

Show & Go offer a 4.5m Brooker 40HP vessel with forward controls and an electric start. A fold-down Bimini is available for shade and comes with all safety equipment. The boat is licensed for 4 people and has night navigational lights for night use.

They also have a 3.1m Stacer which is available with no engine. Alternatively, a 5HP Mariner Engine can be hired for use.

Find more information on their website about pricing and how to contact Show & Go directly.

River Boats for Hire

These round inflatable boats are becoming a popular way to chill out on the water and to no surprise because this experience is the ultimate way to enjoy relaxing on the water.

5. BBQ Buoys

BBQ Buoys offer a range of alcohol (no BYO alcohol, and the skipper needs to be well behaved) and food packages, consisting of meat and grazing platters. But you can take your own food too. Onboard you’ll find the use of a centrally located BBQ for everyone (or wooden board if a BBQ is not required), table, esky, ice, cutlery, plates, cups and the all-important Bluetooth speakers. Perfect for any special occasion!

There are traditional packages available for 2 people right through to 10 people along with special events such as New Year’s Eve and Date Nights!

A boat licence is not needed to hire a BBQ Buoy, but a car licence is needed, and to be at least 21 years of age.

The more mates you bring along for fun, the cheaper the experience! For more information and to find out about their Drinks & Food Menu, check out the pricing section of their website.

6. Portobello River Cruises

The latest edition to the new inflatable trend in Adelaide is the Portobello River Cruises. These inflatable vessels are a unique way to enjoy the gorgeous Port River with its resident dolphins, especially during a magical sunset.

Portobello Food.Kitchen.Bar is a locally well-known waterfront cafe/restaurant situated in New Port, just next to Port Adelaide. This experience brings their culinary delights floating outdoors, taking alfresco to a whole new level!

Portobello River Cruisers seat from 1 – 6 people with ample space to enjoy the setting. Food and drinks can be pre-ordered from the onboard menu. There aren’t any cooking facilities onboard but trust us, you won’t want them when you see what’s on offer from Portobello! There is something for everyone with a range of snacks, platters, pizzas, wine, beers, ciders and soft drinks.

Check out their onboard menu for more information.

January, 2021

My family and I celebrated my birthday yesterday and it was delightful. The boat is luxurious and very comfortable. Our captain was a lot of fun as well as being informative about the sights of Melbourne. It was so much fun that we are all still talking about it. I would highly recommend Pleasure Cruising for any event.

April, 2024

Our experience renting the self-drive 12-person boat for my birthday was nothing short of fantastic! The boat was spacious, comfortable, and easy to navigate. We had a blast exploring the waterways, soaking up the sun, and celebrating onboard. The self-drive feature gave us the freedom to chart our own course and create unforgettable memories. Highly recommended for group outings or special occasions!

January, 2024

The host couple was delightful! They provided a knowledgeable history of the surrounding area. And they are also very experienced sailors which made for a fantastic adventure at sea! The 32’ Catalina was in ‘ship’ shape and was very comfortable for our large family of eight! Would highly recommend!

We had a great day. An exiting day. An informative day. Dean was great to meet and sail with. He did his best to accomodate everything we wanted. He was friendly, and easy to interact with, answering all our many questions and helping us greatly in our growing understanding of the world of sailing. I would have no hesitation in recomending Dean and his lovely boat to anyone wanting any of the sailing experinences he offers or one you might design yourself. Highly recomended. Michael.

January, 2022

We had the perfect day sailing the bay , Dean our host was both patient and knowledgeable about sailing and the history of Melbourne waterways. His boat is simply awesome .I couldn’t recommend our experience highly enough if you thinking of it just do it . A 5 star day for me cheers Darren

November, 2021

Highly recommend this boat for your next event! We celebrated my sisters hens day and we had the most AMAZING time!! The staff were incredibly kind, attentive and so helpful. Nothing was too hard for any of them and they made the trip so enjoyable. All my guests were commenting how lovely the staff were and how friendly they all were. The food and beverage options were extensive and promptly served, dietary requirements were covered and everything was just perfect!

Paris 2024 Olympics Opening Ceremony: Jessica Fox, Eddie Ockenden to lead Australia at historic parade - how to watch live

The much-awaited Paris 2024 Olympics will kick off with a historic Opening Ceremony on the River Seine on Saturday.

The Paris 2024 Olympics Opening Ceremony will begin at 3:30 AM AEST and will be available for live streaming and broadcast in Australia.

This year’s ceremony is poised to be the largest in Olympic history and the first one to be held outside a stadium.

Paris, the City of Lights, will illuminate into the grand stage as the traditional Parade of Nations takes place on boats along the River Seine, passing some of the most iconic Parisian landmarks.

Around 100 boats carrying around 10,500 athletes will parade along the River Seine, with nearly 6,00,000 spectators expected to enjoy the Opening Ceremony in person.

The six-kilometre boat parade will start from the Austerlitz Bridge, passing through Parc Urbain La Concorde, Esplanade des Invalides, Grand Palais and Iena Bridge.

The parade will conclude at Trocadero, where the remaining elements of Olympic protocol, including the lighting of the Olympic cauldron, will take place and the Games will be declared open.

The Opening Ceremony is scheduled to last more than three hours.

As a host of Brisbane 2032 , Australia will be third last in the Order of Nations, ahead of only the United States (hosts of Los Angeles 2028) and France (host country).

Around 80 Australian athletes are expected to participate in this Paris 2024 Opening Ceremony with canoeist Jessica Fox and hockey star Eddie Ockenden leading as flag-bearers .

The Australian Olympic Team will don green blazers , featuring the names of all 301 Australian Olympic Champions on the jacket linings.

Thomas Jolly, a renowned French theatre director and actor, is the artistic director for the Paris 2024 Olympic and Paralympic ceremonies.

Every bridge along the parade route will feature dancers, led by ceremony choreographer Maud Le Pladec, who will direct 400 dancers out of the total 3,000 artists participating in the Opening and Closing Ceremonies. The artists will be adorned in unique costumes designed by Daphne Burki.

When does the Paris 2024 Olympics Opening Ceremony start in Australia

The Paris 2024 Olympics Opening Ceremony starts at 3:30 AM Australian Eastern Standard Time (AEST) on July 27, Saturday.

How to watch the Paris 2024 Olympics opening ceremony live in Australia

Live streaming of the Paris 2024 Olympics Opening Ceremony will be available on 9Now and Stan. The Paris 2024 Opening Ceremony will be broadcast live on the Network Nine TV channels in Australia.

Photos from the Paris Olympic Games Opening Ceremony spliced together

The Paris Olympic Games have officially opened with a long and extravagant ceremony along the River Seine.

In the pouring rain, athletes from every competing country floated along on boats of varying shapes and sizes as multiple performances took place across bridges, buildings and riverside boulevards in central Paris, celebrating all the weird and wonderful parts of French history and culture.

We sat through the three-hour-long ceremony and picked out the best bits so that you can get on with your day like a normal human instead.

1. Lady Gaga gets her peacock on

The American singer was one of several individual performers of the night, and she opened the 'pink' section of the show in truly French fashion.

Standing on a large gold staircase as a stage, and surrounded by black and pink feathers, Gaga's entire set was sung in French - including her own piano performance teasing Edith Piaf's famous song "La Vie en Rose."

A woman wearing a black leotard and a white feather tail dances with people wearing black and holding pink furry umbrellas

A jazz orchestra sat just off to the side as she and her back-up dancers went through a glorious routine, twirling Gaga up in the air and around people's shoulders as she continued singing.

She then exchanged her black fluffy number for a white burst of feathers, which she strapped to her waist like a tail, before one final chorus saw her finish her set up on the golden steps.

2.Gojira helps behead Marie Antoinette

Paris isn't all about jazz, though. Turns out they love their heavy metal music, too.

And given how badass their own history is, it's perhaps no surprise that an artistic recreation of the beheading of Marie Antoinette was accompanied by the metal band Gojira, whose members stood on platforms on the walls of a Seine-adjacent building while playing electric guitars and drums.

Inside each of the windows were statues in red dresses posing as the famous French character, each of them holding their own heads in their hands, as a large painted boat slowly sailed beneath them carrying an opera singer.

As Gojira belted out their song, a choir soon began to swell, building to a crescendo that saw the walls of the building explode with red streamers, sparks and fireworks in a truly bloody spectacle mimicking the iconic moment in French history when the last queen consort was beheaded by her subjects, sparking (in part) the French Revolution.

And given the current political situation in France in light of the recent election, such a celebration makes sense.

It was pretty epic.

3. It's fashion, darling

As each nation's team floated along the river, we finally got a glimpse of each of their formal outfits designed for the Opening Ceremony.

Here's a quick snapshot of the best and worst dressed of the 206 nations, as critiqued by ABC Sport's reluctant fashion expert (me):

  • The three kids who chased Zidane in the opening video sequence, dressed like they drew their own costumes: funky, 8/10.
  • Greece, the traditional first nation in every Opening Ceremony procession, wearing a cream jacket over a navy pant-shirt combo: yawn, 3/10.
  • Aruba, wearing jackets that fade from blue to yellow, in a throwback to my favourite tie-dye Word Art illustration style: nostalgic in the wrong way, 3/10.
  • Belgium wearing what appear to be a range of silk pyjamas: awkward, 1/10.
  • Burundi wrapped in bright traditional outfits featuring shell headbands: delightful, 7/10.
  • Canada in plain red tracksuits that blend into one red blob the further a drone hovers away from them: boring, 1/10.

A group of people wearing red, yellow and black outfits flying flags on a boat

  • Spain whose skirts look like used tampons: very French? Or just very gross? 2/10.
  • Ghana wearing breezy colourful tunics: fun but underdressed, 5/10.
  • Team GB in cream bomber jackets and light blue pants: trying too hard to look cool but just invites bullying, 4/10.
  • Athletes getting tangled in the clear plastic raincoats as the skies above Paris opened: hilarious, 10/10.
  • Women from Iran, Oman, and a few other Arab nations wearing hijabs in a country where they're banned: radical, 8/10.
  • Liberia in sheer black-and-gold robes, with one athlete sporting a truly miraculous afro: fierce, 9/10.
  • Madagascar in what can only be described as improved safari outfits for a costume party: didn't read the memo, 2/10.
  • Monaco wearing red and white stripes with red berets and pencil skirts: read the memo too closely, 2/10.
  • Mongolia in cream robes topped with a blue chest plate piece detailed with traditional gold and silver images: awesome, 10/10.

A group of people wearing white and blue outfits flying a red and blue flag stand on a boat

  • Papua New Guinea shivering in traditional outfits of feathers and grass skirts: definitely not weather-appropriate, but wonderful anyway. 10/10.
  • South Sudan in black military-style jackets, which might be a little too soon given what happened there in 2021: inconsiderate, 2/10.
  • Sweden wearing bright yellow jackets that look bulk-purchased from Uniqlo: we've already had Minions, we don't need more yellow things, thank you. 1/10.
  • France, the hosts, wearing simple navy-blue suits: I thought you were meant to be a fashion culture? 2/10.
  • Australia in rain-drenched dark green blazers and wet t-shirts, squealing like they're on a boozy schoolies cruise on the Gold Coast: that's the Aussie spirit, 10/10.

4. Peace and protest

There had been a lot of concern leading up to the opening ceremony that unrest within France itself, as well as more broadly around the world, would lead to attempts to disrupt the event.

Concerns were so high that France closed the entire airspace over Paris for several hours, while the streets surrounding the river have been barricaded and heavily guarded for the past week, with only residents and workers allowed through.

That didn't stop a couple of different, smaller protests taking place though. Some folks watching unfurled banners and flags in the surrounding apartments, while a small number of athletes themselves used the spotlight of the ceremony to shine a light on particular issues.

The Algerian team threw flowers into a particular part of the Seine where, in 1961, 200 Algerians were allegedly shot and drowned by French police, who were responding to a protest against a curfew placed on Muslim people in Paris.

The Palestinian team then floated down the river holding their flags in one hand and a peace sign with their fingers on the other, and traditional keffiyehs around their heads and shoulders.

The contingent was led by flag-bearers Waseem Abu Sal, who wore a shirt stitched with images of jets dropping bombs, and Valerie Tarazi, whose family is from Gaza, where much of the current conflict is taking place.

One of the final musical numbers saw a singer standing in front of an on-fire piano, floating in the middle of the Seine, as she sung a pared-back version of John Lennon's "Imagine".

The phrase "we stand and call for peace" then showed up on the screen at the end.

5. France being ... very French

The opening ceremony wasn't all serious, though. It also leaned heavily into the beautiful and sometimes bizarre elements of French culture.

Over the course of the three hours, we saw a parade of pink-costumed dancers, some of whom wore giant heads of rats or costumes made of croissants.

We watched a small video montage of three attractive people locking eyes in a library and flirting with each other by reading famous saucy French novels before escaping into a stairway to, it's implied, make sweet French love to each other.

We watched a glittery blue man emerge from underneath a silver cloche, reclined on a bed of flowers and fruits, apples and vines draped across his, um, delicate parts, while he sang some sensual French song like a sexy cabaret version of Genie from the Disney movie, Aladdin.

Channel 9.

We saw can-can dancers kick and spin along the riverbank, a fashion show featuring drag queens stomping and voguing their way across a bridge, a musical number featuring a bunch of acrobatic bellboys wheeling Louis Vuitton-themed suitcases supposedly carrying the Olympic medals across cobblestones.

We watched a forest of ghostly dancers waving and bending on giant poles, a sexy French pianist playing a number in the rain, and, for some reason, a long animation sequence of Minions trying a bunch of Olympic sports, only for the submarine they were practising in to implode, in what I assume was a touching tribute to the billionaires lost in the Titan submersible disaster. Very moving.

6. The mysterious torch-bearer is finally unmasked

The ceremony opened with a video montage of Zinedine Zidane, icon of French football, carrying the Olympic torch on its final leg before handing it over to a masked figure wrapped in robes, reminiscent of the main character from the Assassin's Creed videogame.

The figure then spent the next two hours parkouring across France's iconic buildings, racing along rooftops and zip-lining over rivers, carrying the torch with them everywhere they went, building the drama and mystery of who would be the one to light the final flame.

There were wild rumours about who had been chosen for the honour of lighting the flame for the Paris Olympics, from Olympic legend Marie-Jose Perec to actor Omar Sy to astronaut Thomas Pesquet to survivors of the 2015 attack on a Parisian terror attacks.

Online, entranced watchers grew giddy that the masked figure would reveal themselves as the chosen flame-lighter at the end of the night. But as the ceremony's traditional speeches and Olympic Oath concluded beneath the Eiffel Tower, the mysterious figure was not unmasked at all.

Instead, they handed the torch back to Zidane, who reappeared from nowhere before walking it back down the stage to hand it to that famous French figure in sport ... Rafael Nadal?

Yes, the Spanish tennis legend, who will compete in his last ever Olympics here in Paris, for some reason was given the torch, but he also soon disappeared from view as the most photographed tower in the world above them was engulfed in darkness.

A glittering light-show on the tower then began, accompanying Nadal's journey on another boat back up the Seine. But he wasn't alone: beside him on the boat were three other former athletes — Serena Williams, Carl Lewis, and Nadia Comanceci - who are, famously, also not French, but were there anyway, because why not?

A ring of fire propelling a hot air balloon into the sky.

They finally handed it to an actual French person, Amélie Mauresmo, who was the third tennis player of the final torch relay, and the start of the final sequence of French athletes who carry the flame from the Seine to the Louvre to its final resting-place: a giant old-timey hot-air balloon cauldron.

7. My heart will always go on for Celine Dion

The final torch-lighting sequence closed with Charles Coste, the oldest living French Olympic champion, receiving the flame from the many French athletes who carried it up from the river.

Coste, a cycling champion in 1948, was born the last time Paris hosted the Games 100 years ago.

A photo of the Eiffel Tower with the olympic rings and a light show

He hands the torch over to the final flame-lighters, Teddy Riner and Marie-Jose Perec, who carry it across a small bridge and to the base of the hot-air balloon, lighting it underneath and watching it rise into the night.

And then, the performance we've all been waiting for: the French-Canadian singer Celine Dion suddenly appears at the base of the Eiffel Tower dressed in a glittering white gown.

Having withdrawn from public life as she struggled with Stiff Person Syndrome, the world was wondering if we would ever see her again.

But Dion, one of France's adopted crowning glories, returns to the spotlight in style, belting out an incredible rendition of Edith Piaf's "Hymn to Love" with a live pianist next to her.

Tears. Goosebumps. Let the Games begin!
