Who is Ghost? A history on Call of Duty’s favorite Grim Reaper
Who is Ghost and why is he so important in the COD community? Well join us as we go over a brief history of the beloved grim reaper of MW2.
With the release of the remaster of Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2, we are treated to the return of Ghost. He made his debut in the original Modern Warfare 2 series and has been a fan-favorite character since. So, with his return in the remaster, a lot of newer players haven't had the time to get to know Ghost. So, let's dive into who Ghost is and the history of what makes him so iconic.
Ghost's Origins in CoD and Why he's loved
Simon "Ghost" Riley made his debut back in Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2. Although he wasn't the player character, Ghost was your right-hand man throughout the majority of the game. The British Special Forces officer was infamously known for his skull pattern mask that never leaves his face. He was the partner in crime of the protagonist of the games. A cold-hearted killer on the outside but a truly good friend to those close to him. He's cemented himself as one of the best characters in the series for his role in the Modern Warfare trilogy.
It's hard to specify one reason as to why the CoD community loves Ghost. Modern Warfare 2 had incredible missions like "No Russian" or "Hotel Whiskey" that became iconic in the game's history and Ghost was with you through it all. But it's hard to pinpoint a specific reason. For some, it's because Modern Warfare 2 was their childhood game, for others it was his loyalty to his partner. But for most, it was his tragic end in the series that cemented his position as an all-time great character.
One mission in CoD MW2 cemented Ghost's position in the hearts of players, which was "loose ends". This mission starts with a phenomenal infiltration of a cottage safehouse that's been occupied by Makarov. And after a narrow escape and important documents acquired, fighting through tooth and nail Roach and Ghost make it out.
At the extraction point, the two meet with Col. Shepard. And seemingly out of nowhere, Shepard ties his loose ends, and shoots both Roach and Ghost. This was an utter shock to every player who's touched the game, as few games kill the main character out of nowhere. And as Ghost lays on the ground, being covered by gasoline, he hears on the radio about Shepard's betrayal. And as Ghost's eyes begin to close, Shepard tosses his cigar onto their bodies, and the pair meet their end. You can check out the full scene here .
The CoD Modern Warfare series as a whole had a great story throughout its trilogy and really made players fall in love with characters like Ghost. And to see such a cold betrayal of not only the player character, but his-ever loyal partner too? That is a therapy session waiting to happen. But out of the sadness comes love. And that's why the community loves Ghost so much, because of his history with the franchise and how good of a friend he was.

Composition [ ]
Task Force 141 had at least eighty-five known operators that are drawn from various special operations forces of Australia , Canada , the United Kingdom , the United States , and Russian Loyalists . The specific units that contribute operators to Task Force 141 are unknown.
The commanding officer of Task Force 141 appears to be Lieutenant General Shepherd , a U.S. Army officer who spearheads the Task Force's operations. SAS Captain John "Soap" MacTavish served as the Task Force's Company/Field Commander between 2013 and 2016. Additional soldiers from the Special Air Service such as Lieutenant Simon "Ghost" Riley and Sergeant Gary "Roach" Sanderson were recruited to serve as operators during field missions. After his liberation from the Petropavlovsk Gulag , Captain John Price of the Special Air Service served as another field commander.
Disavowed [ ]
During the events of Modern Warfare 2 , Lieutenant General Shepherd betrayed Task Force 141; subsequently all the remaining members were either eliminated or on the run, the rogue Shepherd was then killed by John "Soap" MacTavish at the conclusion of the crisis and Task Force 141 was disavowed. In Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 , the few 141 survivors such as John Price and Soap reunited with Nikolai and his group of Russian Loyalists , they continued to operate with support from the current SAS Baseplate operative and former colleague of Price, MacMillan , to resume their main objective.
Names Cleared [ ]
After rescuing Russian President Boris Vorshevsky and his daughter Alena from a diamond mine in eastern Siberia, Task Force 141 was reinstated (signified by the Disavowed status on the Task Force 141 emblem being removed) by NATO, with even Russia itself approving their actions. They then began to concentrate their efforts to hunt down Makarov once again, eventually locating and killing him three months later in the United Arab Emirates .

- The full Task Force 141 theme tune is played during the mission " Contingency ".
- While the Americans, Australians, British and have their flags in their colors and on their shoulder patches, the Canadians have their flag on their back in green.
- There are no Canadian Task Force 141 models in multiplayer despite models being in the campaign.
- Task Force 141 (along with the Heartbeat Sensor ) is jokingly referenced in a conversation between two characters in the 2010 video game Battlefield: Bad Company 2 . After discovering the team has to go on a hunt for an HVT, Sarge says, "I should clear this with Braidwood," to which Sweetwater replies, "No! No, no, no! He'll just send some special ops douche-bags, with pussy-ass heartbeat monitors on their guns, instead of us!"
- It is unknown how many other operator's were killed during Shepherd's Shadow Company. It has been speculated that by the time of Loose Ends, the Task Force had only a handful of operators were left due to previous conflicts. This is however unconfirmed.
- While Bravo Team was the tip of the spear in terms of the Task Force, it is possible there were other fireteams that were either pulled back to the war in America or if they were deployed as support elements during the in game missions.
- In Modern Warfare 3 , some Delta Force soldiers will have the same name as some of the Task Force 141 members. There is little indication they are connected/the same.
- By the end of Modern Warfare 3 , Price and Nikolai are the last known remaining Task Force 141 members.
- In Modern Warfare 3, the old and new Task Force 141 logo can be unlocked in Multiplayer.
- The old Task Force 141 emblem is seen on Perk Care Packages from Survival Mode .
- Task Force 141 is referenced in the 2012 video game Far Cry 3 . During the level " Fly South ", Willis says that he must join Task Force 141 to go to Russia.
- The numeral designation of the SWC-141 Retribution from Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare was recommended by representatives of the Russian Federation in remembrance of the Task Force's heroic actions in rescuing Russian President Boris Vorshevsky. . This was deemed as an easter egg rather than a connection between Modern Warfare 3 and Infinite Warfare .
- Some of the members have US Army Third Infantry Division patches inexplicably.

About This Game
- Ten years after a devastating mass event, America’s borders and the balance of global power have changed forever. As what's left of the nation's Special Operations forces, a mysterious group known only as "Ghosts" leads the fight back against a newly emerged, technologically-superior global power.
- A New Call of Duty Universe: For the first time in franchise history, players will take on the underdog role with Call of Duty: Ghosts; outnumbered and outgunned, players must fight to reclaim a fallen nation in an intensely personal narrative. Gamers will get to know an entirely new cast of characters and visit locales in a changed world unlike anything seen in Call of Duty® before.
- In Call of Duty: Ghosts you don't just create a class, you create a soldier, a first for the franchise. In the new Create-A-Soldier system, players can change the physical appearance of their soldier by choosing the head, body type, head-gear and equipment, and for the first time in a Call of Duty® game, the player can also choose their gender. With 20,000 possible combinations, this is the most flexible and comprehensive character customization in Call of Duty history.
- New dynamic maps are the evolution of multiplayer. They include interactive elements and player triggered events that make the environment evolve as each match goes on. The entire landscape can shift and force players to change tactics and strategies.
- Call of Duty: Ghosts introduces new tactical player movements. The new contextual lean system now allows players to lean around obstacles without adding button combinations or fully leaving cover. The new mantling system allows fluid movement over objects, while maintaining momentum. The knee slide allows for a natural transition from sprinting crouching to prone.
- Call of Duty: Ghosts delivers over 20 NEW Kill Streaks such as Juggernaut Maniac, the Helo Scout, the Vulture and the ODIN Strike. Players can even bring in guard dog Riley, from the single-player campaign, to protect and also to attack enemies. There are also over 30 NEW weapons, including an entirely new weapon class: Marksman Rifles.
- Build your team and take up to 6 of them into battle in the all new Squads mode. This mode takes the best parts of the multiplayer experience and allows you to play either solo or cooperatively with the custom soldiers created and leveled up in multiplayer.
- The load-out choices you make for your Squad members will directly change the AI behavior of your squad-mates. Give your soldier a sniper rifle and he'll behave like a sniper, and an SMG guy will be more run and gun.

CoD MW3: How to Get the Ghost Perk
Ghost is as powerful as its ever been in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3. Here's how to unlock it.
In a fast-paced multiplayer game, catching your enemy unawares is one of the most powerful strategies you can use. The Ghost Perk, alongside a suppressed weapon, lets you stay completely off the enemy minimap and take everyone by surprise. Here’s how to get the Ghost perk in CoD: MW3 .
How to Get the Ghost Perk in Modern Warfare 3
Like many of the best perks and equipment in Modern Warfare 3 , Ghost — called Ghost T/V Camo in-game — is locked behind the Armory system . You can’t get the perk by leveling alone. Instead, there’s a three-step process you need to follow to get Ghost.
- Reach Rank 25 . You gain access to Armory Unlocks at Rank 25. Before that level, the only gear you can use is either in the default classes or earned via leveling up.
- It will be in the menu if you don’t have it. My screenshot was taken after I’d unlocked Ghost.
- Ghost requires three challenge completions or three wins, and once unlocked, you can add it to any of your loadouts in the main menu. Here’s how to fix Daily Challenges if they don’t work .
How Does the Ghost Perk Work in Modern Warfare 3?
One thing to note about the MW3 Ghost perk is that it only works when you’re moving . While the perk makes you invisible to UAVs, radars, and Heartbeat Sensors, it does nothing if you’re parked in a corner or holding a sightline.
After moving for about a second, the perk kicks in and automatically disables after you’ve been standing or sitting still for the same amount of time . The one thing Ghost doesn’t do is remove the red nametag above your head. Nothing removes that.
Call of Duty veterans will remember Ghost first worked this way back in Black Ops 2 , as well as every Treyarch game to follow. Infinity Ward and Sledgehammer games haven’t adopted this methodology until now. It’s refreshing because while I know camping and slow play is a legitimate way to play Modern Warfare 3 , you will get called out if you spend too much time in a dark corner.
I can relate to both sides of that argument, as when I was first learning how to play first-person shooters, my butt was firmly planted on the best vantage point I could find as I waited for that one guy every minute. Nowadays, I play way too fast and could benefit from Ghost, but there’s a strategy in not running it. So long as your enemy has a UAV up, you can assume they always know you’re coming and can account for it . Ghost can put a wrench in both your enemy’s and your own plans if you don’t play it right.
