Motor Yacht

Luxury motor yacht Alexander with her timeless and elegant design was built and designed in 1965 by German company Lubecker Flender Werke. With a steel hull and superstructure, she measures 122 metres and can accommodate up to 80 guests.

Previously known as Regina Maris, luxury motor yacht Alexander was originally purchased by Greek shipping tycoon John S. Latsis but converted from a passenger vessel to a sleek mega yacht by shipyard Hapaq-Lloyd in 1985 to 1987. The yacht does not belong to the Latsis Family since 2015.

Luxury motor yacht Alexander, originally purchased by Greek shipping tycoon John S. Latsis, is now for sale marking the end of an era. The yacht has welcomed royal guests from Buckingham palace such as Prince Charles and Lady Di and the world’s most powerful statesmen such as Mikhail Gorbachev, George Bush and even Hollywood legends like John Travolta.

John S. Latsis, 92, Billionaire Who Built Empire in Shipping

John S. Latsis, the last of a generation of extremely rich Greek shipowners and businessmen that included household names like Aristotle Onassis and Stavros Niarchos, died on April 17 in Athens. He was 92.

The Latsis business empire included shipping, banks, oil refineries and construction companies. This year Forbes magazine rated him 101 among the world's richest people, with a fortune worth $5.4 billion.

Unlike some of his fellow Greek billionaires, Mr. Latsis pursued neither publicity nor reckless living, keeping himself well away from the public eye. But he did court the powerful and the famous, making friends with kings, presidents, prime ministers and actors.

John Spyridon Latsis was born Sept. 14, 1910, in the southwestern Greek fishing village of Katakolo. He began his working life as a laborer, deckhand and ship's captain. In 1938, he bought his first freighter and he owned a fleet of ships by the 1960's.

He then diversified into construction and the oil business, specializing in projects in the Arab world. In 1969, he established Petrola, the first export-oriented oil refinery in Greece and set up another oil refinery in Saudi Arabia.

Next, Mr. Latsis moved into banking and finance. In 1979, he bought the Deposit Bank in Geneva from the Onassis family. In 1989 he established the Private Bank and Trust Company in London.

In 1999 Mr. Latsis handed over management of his business interests to his son Spiro, who survives him, along with his wife, Erietta Tsoukala, and two daughters, Marianna and Margarita.

Prince Charles, the heir to the British throne, was one of Mr. Latsis's influential friends. He lent his yacht, the Alexandros, to the prince for a second honeymoon with Diana, Princess of Wales, in 1991, and last year Prince Charles borrowed the vessel again for an Aegean cruise with his companion, Camilla Parker-Bowles.

The Latsis yacht has also been lent to former President George Bush and his family, as well as to Colin L. Powell, now secretary of state, and to the actor Marlon Brando.

Mr. Latsis was a close friend of many members of the Saudi royal family. But he angered some Greeks by maintaining close ties with former King Constantine, who was deposed.

In 1991, Mr. Latsis created a political storm in Britain when it was learned he had given the Conservative Party, then in power, a gift of $3 million.

Mr. Latsis devoted some of his fortune to philanthropy, creating the Latsis Foundation, which financed many cultural works including a Greek translation of the Koran. He also made large donations to aid earthquake victims in Greece, Egypt and Armenia.

In 1986, Mr. Latsis sent his 20,000-ton cruise ship, Marianna 9, to the south Greek city of Kalamata to serve as a floating home for more than 900 people left homeless by an earthquake there. He also donated $1.5 million to Prince Charles's charitable foundation, the Prince's Trust.

Mr. Latsis maintained homes in Athens, Geneva and London but was careful not to advertise his wealth. The Guardian in Britain once described his London home, Bridgewater House, not far from Buckingham Palace, as ''almost absurdly accessible and a bit scruffy.''

John Latsis, the last of Greece’s shipping billionaires from the postwar boom years whose staggering wealth was used to gain access to world leaders and aid the needy, died Thursday. He was 93.

Latsis’ business empire -- which included shipping, banks, refineries and construction companies -- was worth more than $5 billion by some estimates. His son, Spiro, had taken over most of the family business duties in recent years.

The elder Latsis did not share the passion for publicity or reckless living that marked the lives of his contemporaries such as magnates Aristotle Onassis and Stavros Niarchos. John Latsis took great pains to remain out of the public eye. He rarely gave interviews.

Latsis was born in 1910 in Katakolo, Greece. His first jobs were as a laborer and deckhand. He worked his way up in the merchant marines, becoming a captain and later a shipowner.

He eventually expanded into construction, undertaking major projects in Arab countries to open vital links with some of the world’s main oil producers.

In 1969, Latsis established Petrola, the first export-oriented oil refinery in Greece. He also built and operated a major refinery in Saudi Arabia. Latsis also owned a number of European banks, including London’s Private Bank and Trust Co.

He had homes in Athens, London and Geneva, but tried to keep evidence of his wealth to a minimum. The guest list at Bridgewater House, Latsis’ London home near Buckingham Palace, included some of the most powerful people in the world.

He regularly entertained heads of state and royalty, including members of the Saudi royal family. He angered some Greeks by maintaining a close relationship with Greece’s deposed monarch, Constantine.

Latsis provided his 400-foot yacht, the Alexandros, for use by, among others, Prince Charles and Princess Diana, former President Bush and his family, Secretary of State Colin Powell and actor Marlon Brando.

Latsis also used his vast fortune for philanthropy. He started a foundation that made donations to earthquake victims in Greece, Egypt and Armenia.

He is survived by his wife, Erietta Tsoukala; two daughters; and a son.

The late Greek shipping tycoon John Latsis never believed in doing anything small. Big ships and big business led to a big bank account. And so when it came to buying a private yacht, only the biggest would do.

In 1983, Latsis purchased the 6,000-gt German cruiseship Regina Maris (built 1966) to use as his private floating pleasure palace. Vast sums of cash were splashed out on the ship, which re-emerged as the luxury yacht Alexander.

With luxury digs for 80 guests, and boasting several lounges, dining rooms, and even a full cinema, the Alexander for more than two decades topped the list of the world’s largest yachts owned by private individuals.

From Trade and Shipping to the Birth of the Yacht Management Company

The Latsis group was founded in Greece in the 1940s by the late John S. Latsis. John S. Latsis’ first entrepreneurial ventures focused on trade and shipping and quickly expanded to diverse business interests such as commercial shipping, energy and real estate.

In 1949, John S. Latsis, then a young Captain himself, purchased the Laurana to service the small islands around Athens. The vessel was also enjoyed by family and friends, entertained on short cruises.

Inspired by the joy seen amongst his loved ones on these voyages, John S. Latsis established the chartering company Alcyonides and routed the vessel on the Agrosaronic Gulf Line. Shortly after her first voyage in the line, she was renamed Neraida , meaning “fairy” in Greek, after a vote was held on board with the presence of politicians and journalists and the soon-to-be Prime Minister of the country, Nikolaos Plastiras.

Neraida carried passengers almost every day of her career, hosting politicians and celebrities and appearing in Greek and foreign films until 1974 when she retired from service. Her most frequent route was Piraeus – Aegina – Methana – Poros – Hydra – Hermioni – Spetses, but she also used to visit Leonidion, Monemvasia, Salamina, Nafplion, and Epidaurus. The Neraida Floating Museum & Legacy of John S Latsis

After Neraida retired in 1974, she remained laid-up at a Latsis-owned shipyard in Elefsis, Attica, until 2007; John S. Latsis refused to send his lucky ship for scrap. Following John S. Latsis’ death in 2003, his family launched an ambitious project to assemble an archive of his life and work. In 2007, the decision was made to convert the vessel into a floating museum showcasing part of this collection. On 9 September of the same year, she was loaded onto the Maria, a heavy cargo vessel, for the voyage to Sibenik in Croatia, where a three-year refit took place. Finally, in April 2010, the vessel returned under her own steam to Elefsis.

On February 6, 1963, the newly established Yacht Charter Company Alcyonides sent personal letters to companies and entrepreneurs in Athens and abroad promoting a new and unique kind of luxury vacation: sailing on a private charter yacht.

Alcyonides managed five classic wooden yachts, built in and around the Greek islands and the Mediterranean. Each vessel was constructed in the old and classic Greek shipbuilding tradition in Perama, Athens. The wooden boats boasted Rolls-Royce engines and reached speeds of 10 knots, all held Lloyds certificates, and could accommodate up to 12 passengers.

In 1977, the acquisition of Henriette – a 53-meter yacht built in 1949 – signalled the entrance of the company into the pleasure yacht industry. Gradually, the company became involved in yacht management , conversions, yacht refits , operations, charter and brokerage.

The 58 MY Henriette was designed by the New York-based Naval Architect and Marine Consultant John Wells (1879-1962). She was built by welding shipyards in Norfolk, Virginia and was launched in 1950. At the time, the yacht represented the pinnacle of American Shipbuilding and was the finest example of the true craftsmanship that characterized the yachts of her era. In 1977, the yacht was brought by the late John S. Latsis and her acquisition signalled the transition of the Latsis Group into the yacht management business.

Sete Yacht Management was established in 1998 and was followed by PrivatSea in 2004.

‘Total Disgrace’: Anger, Frustration as Mass Heating Failures Across Russia Leave Thousands in the Cold

P ODOLSK, Moscow region – Residents throughout Russia affected by unprecedented winter heating outages in recent days have expressed their frustration and urged local authorities to restore heating in their homes.

In Podolsk, a town some 30 kilometers south of the capital Moscow, at least 149,000 residents — nearly half of its population — were left without heating when a heating main burst at a nearby private ammunition plant.

“It’s a total disgrace. There is no heating and no hot water. We have to sleep in sleeping bags,” Yuri, a local resident, told The Moscow Times.

“I have no words to describe how bad the situation is," said Yuri, who declined to provide his surname. "We have had no heating for almost six days."

Heating issues have affected residents in the Moscow region, where temperatures have plunged to as low as minus 20 degrees Celsius in the past week, as well as people in the Far East Primorye region , the cities of Moscow and St. Petersburg , Penza , the southern Voronezh and Volgograd regions and more.

In the Tver region, a group of residents filmed an appeal to President Vladimir Putin, saying that they “are freezing from the cold” in the village of Novozavidovsky.

“We're literally being killed by the cold,” a woman in the video said, adding that they have been sending requests to local authorities since September after their houses were connected to a boiler room whose power was reportedly insufficient.

“This is some kind of torture and extermination of the population 100 kilometers from Moscow,” she added.

Residents of the Moscow region town of Elektrostal lit a fire in the street to draw the authorities’ attention to the heating problem.

“It’s impossible to stay in our houses. We're freezing!” a group of women in the video said.

Suffering from subzero temperatures, residents are placing the blame on local authorities and utility services for failing to take necessary precautions and not taking action to resolve the situation.

“We are sending complaints everywhere but no one listens to us. We have portable heaters working in every room, but the temperature inside is still 10 degrees Celsius,” Yelena from Podolsk said.

“There is a clinic and a hospital, as well as kindergartens, where there is no heating. And we have no answers, no assistance, no explanation,” Yelena added.

Podolsk authorities opened temporary heating centers and declared a state of emergency.

Local authorities linked the heating problems to the fact that the town is heated by a boiler plant owned by the Klimovsk Specialized Ammunition Plant, a private ammunition factory and one of the largest weapon cartridge production enterprises in the country.

“The facility is under tight security conditions, which limits our ability to oversee winter preparations,” the Moscow region’s Vice Governor Yevgeny Khromushin said last week. “We were unaware of the problem for nearly a day.”

An unidentified Moscow region official and two senior executives at the plant were arrested on suspicion of providing unsafe services, Russia’s Investigative Committee, which probes major crimes, said in a statement Tuesday.

Investigators said that Podolsk’s deputy mayor was accused of misusing authority by issuing a readiness certificate for the boiler house at the plant.

In the neighboring Tver region, the authorities opened a criminal case over the laundering of over 84 million rubles ($938,993) in heating bills paid by residents, the Astra Telegram channel reported this week, citing unidentified sources. According to investigators, the heads of the local water intake and boiler house misappropriated the heating payments for personal use.

Reacting to the heating failures, Putin on Tuesday asked Emergency Situations Minister Alexander Kurenkov to provide heat and electricity to the affected residents.

The outages appear to be the latest effect of several decades of crumbling infrastructure in Russia which have been linked to endemic corruption and mismanagement.

The overall decay of Russia's municipal infrastructure surpassed 70% in 2022, the pro-Kremlin newspaper Izvestia reported .

According to Sergei Pakhomov, head of the State Duma’s Construction, Housing and Utilities Committee, water pipes that were 90 years old or even older were still in use as recently as two years ago in some cases.

Housing, utilities and communal services are a common source of problems for Russians during the winter.

In St. Petersburg, residents regularly complain about extensive ice coverage on city streets and sidewalks, with many people ending up in the hospital over the years due to slipping and falling accidents.

In the Siberian republic of Khakassia, two villages were left without electricity last month due to apparent issues with outdated communication systems.

In the winter of 2020, five people in the Perm region were killed after a pipe burst.

When asked about the latest heating outages, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov acknowledged the problems and linked them to poor municipal infrastructure, saying that people “had to endure a lot of inconvenience in the cold and without electricity.”

"Despite all the titanic efforts to update all housing and communal services systems, there's still a certain part that remains considerably deteriorated. These programs will continue, but it is impossible to update all pipes and all housing and communal services systems in 10-15 years,” Peskov said.

As for now, residents affected by heating issues appear to lack optimism that the problems will be solved efficiently.

"It's been a week since we've had heating, and the temperature in my apartment is around 11 degrees Celsius,” Podolsk resident Lidiya told The Moscow Times.

“Unfortunately, no one knows when it will be repaired,” she added.
