Najad buys swedish service and maintenance yard.

Swedish sailboat producer Najad Yachts has acquired Orust Yacht Service AG, a service and maintenance yard based on the island of Orust, including its production and harbour facilities.

Najad has been constructing yachts since 1971, with models including N395, the N570CC and N450CC Next Generation, due for launch in 2023. Following the acquisition, Najad will be moving production back to the service and maintenance yard in Henån, on the island of Orust.

Fredrik Malmqvist, CEO of Najad Yachts, sees the acquisition as an opportunity to deliver more to their customers to make yacht ownership an easy and enjoyable process.

“It feels amazing to share with you that Najad is moving back home to Henån. We have now secured the production, skills, quality, and future scaling for Najad.

“I truly believe that current and prospective owners of exclusive sailing yachts today demand much more in terms of easy ownership. With the acquisition of Orust Yacht Service, we will be able to provide a service and maintenance scheme that few others can offer which will improve the experience of owning a Najad.”

Orust Yacht Service is one of northern Europe’s largest and most respected service, repair, and maintenance yards for sailing yachts. The company will continue to be managed as a separate entity offering its quality service to a wide range of customers, with Andreas Samuelsson as CEO.

Samuelsson commented:

The Island of Orust, Shipbuilding, 1253 and All That

Boats have been synonymous with the Island of Orust, located in Bohuslän on the Swedish west coast, for centuries. The first record of the Island’s shipbuilding can be traced as far back as 1253, when King Håkon Håkonsson had a ship built in Ramshult, Lyresund. It is true to say that ships and shipbuilding are the very essence of this region and have been down the ages.

The build of large vessels around Uddevalla can be traced back to the Middle Ages. In 1557, it is believed that the citizens of the city were commissioned to build a warship for the Danish navy.

During the fourteenth and fifteenth century the fishing industry on the outer coastline grew steadily. Because of this, those who lived there became involved in all aspects of shipbuilding as the demand for fishing boats grew; as well as other craft.

After Bohuslän’s transition to Sweden in 1658, shipbuilding within the Orust fjords increased. As ships were lost in the recurring wars of the period, Orust became a prime location for shipbuilding. Timber here was easily accessible, there were plenty of water saws and Orust’s skilled, experienced shipbuilders did the rest.

The Orust yards saw a further upturn in the mid-nineteenth century when freedom of trade was introduced bringing with it increased volumes of freight. Numbers of ships rose significantly and shipbuilding boomed.

The northwest of Orust – Kungsviken, Brattås and Svineviken – were also famous for shipbuilding, along with the shipyards of Söbben in Torps parish. Yet more yards prospered in Orust’s interior with yards in Slussen, Krogane and Syltenäs. There were also yards that appeared in Lyresund. Shipbuilding had become big business!

By the end of the nineteenth century, the region was seeing a decline in traditional shipbuilding. Large numbers of cutters were by then being imported from the UK. These were very popular with the ship owners, and as a result they out-performed the Orust built yachts. Thus, the large ship builders were forced to either close or to reinvent themselves, manufacturing other products.

However, what goes around comes around, and by the mid-twentieth century, traditional shipbuilding had again become a popular niche market for the region. Some yards concentrated on building commercial boats, whilst others built pleasure yachts, first in wood and then in GRP.

In the early 1950s, Allmag’s shipyards in eastern Orust started to experiment with fiberglass boats. Yacht building using fiberglass evolved over the next 10 years and after that GRP production really took off in Orust. Building yachts in GRP is now the region’s largest industry. Yards that operate on Orust and its surrounding areas read like a Who’s Who of quality yacht building – Hallberg-Rassy, Najad, Malö, Regina, Fantasi, Sweden Yachts, Forgus and Vindö.

With such a strong history, it is no surprise to learn that the Island of Orust has some of the finest service yards on the planet.

Bohuslän is the most westerly part of Sweden, located at Skagerrak and Kattegat stretching from Göteborg to the Norwegian border. Bohuslän has numerous middle sized and small islands and rocky islets, but also 3 of the 6 biggest islands in Sweden – Orust, Tjörn and Hisingen. Orust – the home of Berthon Scandinavia – is an island about an hour by car from Göteborg airport.

The sailing season runs from April to September, with the weather peaking from June to August. The water temperature is around 18-22 degrees during “high season” and in shallow waters it can be even warmer.

Recent decades have seen an increase in foreign yachts visiting Bohuslän, mainly from Scandinavian countries and from northern Europe but also from the Mediterranean, USA, and even Australia and New Zealand.

Why is this area so unique and worth exploring, you ask?

The beautiful, long days are popular with those who want to enjoy sailing from dawn until dusk. The sun rises over Berthon Scandinavia in Henån around 4 a.m. in mid-June, setting about 11.30 p.m. It barely gets dark overnight. Night sailing and barbeques on nearby islands are super popular. It is a fantastic lifestyle.

This unique archipelago offers fair weather and protected anchorages. There are many islands where you can dock using a stern anchor, and countless marinas to choose from. The locals are wonderfully welcoming.

Many yacht owners fall in love with this special place and decide to keep their yachts in Henån. Only a day from Norway and Denmark and less than 3 days from the Baltic Sea, it is an ideal cruising ground.

Najad Yachts will be moving production back to Henån, on the island of Orust, Sweden. This move comes after the acquisition of the service and maintenance yard Orust Yacht Service AB, including the company’s production and harbour facilities.

The owner of Arcona Yachts has acquired Orust Yacht Service AB

The Arcona company structure is expanding!

Today our holding company, Orust Quality Yachts AB, announced that they have bought Orust Yacht Service AB which is based in Henån on the island of Orust, Sweden. This is where our sister company, Najad Yachts, also owned by Orust Quality Yachts AB, is based. The acquisition includes land, the building and all facilities in the harbour with launching facilities, etc. A complete yard!

It is a service yard 25 minutes away from Arcona in Uddevalla and they can store about 240 sailing boats indoors – ideal for winterisations!

Not only will the acquisition increase the opportunity for Arcona owners to store their yachts over winter and have further access to the on site service, maintenance and commissioning, it will a lso give Arcona the ability to increase the numbers of boats produced in Uddevalla, by using some services from their new sister company, Orust Yacht Service AB.

We congratulate our owner, Håkan Eksandh, on this acquisition as the benefit to Arcona owners, existing and prospective, is superb.

Arcona CEO steps down as group restructures management team

Orust Quality Yacht Group (OQY Group), which comprises Swedish brands Arcona Yachts, Najad Yachts of Sweden and the service yard, Orust Yacht Service, confirms Arcona CEO Urban Lagnéus has stepped down.

Fredrik Malmqvist will continue in his role as CEO of the OQY Group, including heading both Arcona and Najad.

OQY Group has appointed Marcus Jungell as sales director. To streamline the operation within OQY Group, the management team is being restructured. Aside from the addition of Jungell as sales director, Marcus Lindström is now head of production at Najad Yachts and Orust Yacht Service. Magnus Larsson is now head of production at Arcona Yachts.

Jungell will join the group on 15 January 2024 and take the lead for sales of Arcona and Najad Yachts. Jungell has experience at Nautor’s Swan, Baltic Yachts and, most recently, at electric boat manufacturer X Shore.

“We are very much looking forward to welcoming Marcus to the team as our new sales director for Arcona and Najad,” says Fredrik Malmqvist, group CEO. “He brings a wealth of international sales experience that both Arcona and Najad will benefit from, and I am sure that Marcus will help us accelerate our growth and take our brands to the next level.”

In 2022, the board of directors of Arcona Najad Yachts decided to split the well-known Swedish brands into two separate companies ; Arcona Yachts and Najad Yachts. Urban Lagnéus took over as CEO in Autumn 2021.

The group has made significant investments throughout 2022 and 2023, including the acquisition of Orust Yacht Service, Najad ’s move back to Henån on the island of Orust, the build of a new showroom and the acquisition of Sail Yard; Arcona Yachts’ production yard.

Håkan Eksandh, OQY group owner adds: “There are exciting times ahead. This restructure of the group will enable Arcona, Najad and Orust Yacht Service to prosper further and fully utilise the wealth of knowledge and facilities that we have across the group for the benefit of our customers.”

Orust Yacht Service is situated on the West coast of Sweden on the Island of Orust, in the safe and calm harbour of Henån.

Our yard is a complete service yard with repair facilities of various kinds, indoor storage for about 200 boats, our marina with about 20 berths, spare part store, full workshop with rigging and wire tools, sailmaking and two cranes with up to 40 tons capacity.

We have about 20 experienced service technicians, carpenters and GRP specialists with hands on experience from shipbuilding, most of them with backgrounds from the quality shipyards of Orust.
