oyster yacht rocas

ytgjan26ryb525.jpg

I meet every new day on the water with great anticipation and this day was no different. For my scheduled sail aboard Oyster’s new 655, the weather was perfect, with the wind blowing in at 13 to 16 knots on a clear fall afternoon on Chesapeake Bay. I decided to share the day with a friend to get his take on the boat. Adding to my anticipation was the simple fact that I rarely write boat reviews. You see, I understand that potential buyers take reviews seriously-and so do I. A boat such as the 655 that costs over $3 million is a major commitment for any yachtsman. I am not a boat surveyor, or naval architect, just a sailor with a lot of racing and cruising miles under my keel.

One of the first things I noticed about the Oyster 655 is that this is a big boat. Her LOA of 67 feet, 7 inches and beam of 18 feet, 5 inches easily accommodated the five of us for our test sail. “Five is a really comfortable number for a long passage,” said the Peter Lloyd, the British owner of Matchmaker , our test 655. “We crossed the Atlantic last year with five on board.” (Thanks to the equipment, short-handed sailing is not out of the question, however.) The mainsail is rolled into a carbon fiber mast and electric winches make handling the sails an easy assignment. Matchmaker was designed with cruisers in mind, but Oyster also offers a high performance version for owners looking to be more competitive around the buoys.

During our afternoon sail, I was able to explore every part of the boat. As I made the rounds, I quickly realized that the 655 is a very strong hull. There was no groaning or creaking. Everything is solid, which should negate any hesitation in heading off on ambitious long distance passages.

I spent two weeks on an Oyster 62 in 2005, sailing around the Svalbard region at 80 degrees north. The boat performed extremely well in a harsh environment and the 655 would be ideal for such an expedition, as well. An enduring design feature on Oyster yachts is a raised house with large windows. Enjoying the view is one reason why arriving at a destination is more than half the fun. Down below there are several ports that are strategically placed for good viewing both at anchor and during passage. One of my favorite ports is in the U-shaped galley, which offers the cook a view and a secure area while sailing. Nice touches were the custom mug locker, top-loading freezer, and front-opening refrigerator. Dish duty is improved with a double stainless sink with drainage grooves leading from the counters. During our sail, the waves on the Bay were choppy, but I felt very stable and secure below-this is an especially key design element in a galley.

The interior featured light maple wood paneling throughout, but Oyster offers several other options to suit individual tastes. (In my opinion, good light below helps keep the crew connected with the deck above.) The joinery was well executed and I noticed that every cabinet I opened closed perfectly, as did every stateroom door. You would be surprised, but many boats have problems in this area-the Oyster does not. One reason it doesn’t is because Oyster has been fine-tuning its production for over 35 years. Considerable institutional knowledge has passed between the builder and the owners over the years-an important aspect that benefits prospective owners.

As I moved around the boat, I discovered additional nifty touches. For example, the vertical hatch to the salon is attached to a hidden shock cord, so that it slides back into its slot. It is translucent, so light comes through, and at the same time you can see the hatch. There is a stopper if you want to keep the hatch halfway up.

Thanks to the raised house, there is a lot of headroom. I stand 6 feet, 2 inches, and I was never in danger of hitting my head. Plenty of wooden handrails are strategically placed on the overhead, which will be handy in a big sea. I made a point of lying down in all the bunks and, again, there was plenty of room for my frame.

The salon is the social center of the boat-at least down below. The cook is in close contact with the rest of the group when they’re gathered on the large settees. The navigation station is located to starboard and has plenty of room for all communication, computer, navigation, and operational gear. One of the biggest challenges on most boats is finding enough stowage. I checked out many lockers and cabinets and they were not full. This is a nice statement for a boat that is continually in use.

oyster yacht rocas

There are eight berths in four cabins, including a large aft master stateroom. On the starboard side is a long settee, which doubles as a decent sea berth. There is a desk, hanging locker, and drawers everywhere, including four large drawers under the berth. I was delighted to see plenty of bookcases, which are indispensable, in my opinion, to a cruising boat. I also found a hidden combination-washer-anddryer unit. An aft hatch and ladder to the cockpit area lets the owner slide up on deck to see what’s going on or exit for a morning swim.

Access to the engine area is convenient and bright with plenty of space to work. A 185-horsepower Perkins Sabre 6-cylinder turbocharged diesel is coupled to a feathering Max-Prop 3 blade.

With the proper layout, amenities, and stowage, I could easily spend a month or longer on Matchmaker and I began to wonder how I could arrange the time to work while on an extended sail. The majority of that time would clearly be spent on deck. The cockpit area is huge! The five of us sat around in kind of a trance, perhaps wondering about ports beyond the Chesapeake Bay. We were under full sail, and heeling at about 15 degrees. Upwind, the speedometer read 8 knots. When I bore off on a close reach we were sailing at 9.5. The helm is a joy. I could stay there all day. The big rig gave the boat plenty of power and during our sail we were never close to needing a reef.

During tacks, we rolled the jib up halfway so it would easily get around the inner forestay. On the afterdeck there were two seats. Each was big enough for two people to sit, talk and enjoy the ride. It was a serene perch, providing Lloyd and I the chance to discuss his boat in more detail. I asked him why he bought the Oyster 655. “It started with the cockpit table of my former 55-foot boat. We needed a bigger table for drinking and relaxing,” he said. “That is what got my wife interested in the idea of a bigger boat. Next was the fact that it would be faster to sail.”

At the helm, I had a good line of sight in all directions, thanks to the double wheels. The Oyster 655 is fast! I couldn’t help but notice how people watched and waved as we sailed past. “Steering her is a dream. It’s safe, predictable, just solid and very trustworthy,” Lloyd remarked. The deep rudder turns the boat easily. There was no play in the steering system. With a full head of steam, I bore away from the wind without easing the sails to see if the boat would stall-it did not. But we did heel over a few more degrees, as you would expect. Going through a tack is a purposeful maneuver on this 82,673-pound Oyster.

I didn’t get to sail her in winds of less than 8 knots, so I can’t report on the 655’s light-wind performance. The sail plan is substantial, with a 150-percent foretriangle (2,830 square feet of sail area).

Located on both sides of the aft quarter are large seats that fit at least two full-size adults. I could sit here for hours, watching the waves, the passing sights, reading, or simply daydreaming about our next port.

Two Oyster representatives were on board for the sail-Bob Marston and Will White. Marston, who is based in Newport, Rhode Island, explained the company’s philosophy. “These boats are built with the customer in mind. They are really meant for long-distance sailing and liveaboard cruising. We built them for people to get out there and use them.”

My friend David spent a good deal of time at the wheel. On the way into the harbor I asked him for his impressions. “I think the boat is really wonderful to sail. It’s substantial and built well,” he said. “I’d love to spend a month cruising on her.” That seems to be the consensus from everyone who steps aboard the 655 and when we returned to the crowded Annapolis harbor, we were all smiling after a fantastic day of sailing.

The Oyster 655 is a solid boat that wants to ply blue water. In fact, back at the dock, I wondered how I could get an invite from Lloyd for the winter season in the Caribbean.

Fox's working on a 'colony' of Oyster Yachts

Oyster 655 Rocas

Fox's are currently working on an impressive ‘colony’ of Oyster Yachts . One of the more extensive Oyster projects is the refit of the 655, Rocas which was recently relaunched at Fox’s looking like a new boat.

The comprehensive re-commissioning of this yacht has included the shot-blasting, priming and anti-fouling of her undersides, re-painting of the composite, carbon-fibre mast and replacement rod rigging. The project is being overseen by Skipper/Project Manager Richard Andrews who has been on site here at Fox’s one day a week since April, Richard is delighted with the results of Fox’s hard work and in his words:

“I have worked in the industry for 25 years, spent time in shipyards all over the world and it’s rare to find such a friendly boatyard. I have been genuinely impressed with the professionalism and knowledge of all the staff at Fox’s, from the engineers to boat polishers everyone is extremely competent and happy in their work.”

Alongside Rocas Fox's are currently working on an impressive ‘colony’ of Oyster Yachts. Pictured below are Oyster 62 Wishanger, 72 Koluka, 72 Luskentyre, 725 On Liberty and Oyster 82 Midnight, all at various stages of refit or repair work.

Onboard the Divine 595, the World is Your Oyster

  • By Cruising World Staff
  • Updated: November 3, 2021

Let’s just say I was feeling on top of the world. It was a lazy Saturday afternoon early this past September on the Solent—the historical straight off the south coast of England that lies between mainland United Kingdom and the Isle of Wight—and I felt right at home, styling at the helm of the new Oyster 595, freshly launched from the company’s shipyard in Wroxham.

The gleaming yacht —a word I do not freely bandy about, but this glamorous steed was far beyond your basic “sailboat”—cleaved through the light chop effortlessly, gliding upwind at 8 knots in precisely the same amount of breeze. Over the years, I’ve enjoyed many a lucky trick at many a lovely wheel, moments I’d wished could be frozen in time, and this was yet another one. This Oyster is a vessel that should, can and will taste far-reaching waters all over the globe, and do so with power and panache.

And frankly, it damn well should.

We’ll get this over with straightaway. For all its magnificence—and that’s the surefire correct adjective for this Rob Humphreys-designed stunner—the 595 will set back its well-heeled owners more than $3 million, which means, I might know how to drive one, but I surely will never own one. But the Oyster 595, perhaps more to the point, has a lot to say not only about contemporary, state-of-the-art, high-end production boatbuilding—and boat buying—but also the broader seascape as the marine industry slowly emerges from what is hopefully the worst of the pandemic.

RELATED: Oyster 745 Review

Consider this: Our lovely test sail was conducted on Hull No. 1 of the 595, for which 16 units have already been sold… sight unseen ! (Never mind sails unfurled.) Down the road from Southampton, in the seaside village of Hythe, an entirely new factory is being tricked out to build the next Oyster up in the line, the 495; no fewer than 10 orders have been placed for that boat, and the very first one is still under construction ! Order books are now full a couple of years down the road, and this is by no means a success story that Oyster alone is enjoying. From Southampton, I made my way across the English Channel to France for this year’s edition of the Cannes Yachting Festival, and the story was repeated time and time again from nearly all the world’s top builders (Swan, Contest, Grand Soleil, HH Catamarans, etc.). Order books for seemingly all the major players are full now through 2023 (at the very least), many for models that do not yet exist beyond design renderings and brochures.

And this at least partially explains the dearth of new offerings from the perennial leading midsize, midlevel, full-on production yards as well, like Hanse and Beneteau. Who has time for innovative R&D when it’s taking all hands on deck to fulfill the long list of vessels already committed to?

What in the name of L. Francis Herreshoff is going on? The answer is both simple and complicated. Of the many surprises unleashed by the pandemic, surely one of the least predictable was many folks’ discovery (or rediscovery) of sailing. Yacht brokers reveled in one of their best years ever in 2020, to the point that the used-boat market has been ravished. But the pent-up demand has not abated, and now the new-boat market is on fire as well. It’s anybody’s guess how long this will last, but for the builders in the midst of this frenzy—such as Oyster—there’s no time to ponder it anyway. Their biggest problem —again, almost universal—is finding the armies of skilled labor necessary to produce what’s already been signed and sealed but not delivered.

Yet, I digress. Back to that remarkable Oyster.

Many of the boats rolling off the line these days are destined for one of the next two Oyster World Rallies; the 2022-2023 edition, capped at 30 boats, is sold out, and there’s no real question that the following one, in 2024-2025, will be as well. Value-added propositions are not unique to Oyster—Swan is also a seasoned master at organizing owner events—but they speak to the level of customer service and care that you also purchase with the boat. Why just build them when you can launch them on a fabulous jaunt around the planet with like-minded souls? Oyster reps speak of their customers as “family” and then back it up. The company is also in the midst of launching a proprietary system called Guardian Angel that monitors their yachts’ systems remotely, wherever they are, and also provides the ability to seek long-distance assistance or advice at the push of a touchscreen button. How much would you be willing to pay for such peace of mind?

The 595 is a striking yacht, with that signature cat’s-eye coachroof; a razor-sharp sheerline; an expansive cockpit and foredeck; maximized waterline with plumb bow; and all of it balanced by those twin helms at one end and an integral, smart sprit/ground-tackle arrangement at the other. It all looks powerful, and is. There are two keel options: a standard foil, which was on the boat I sailed, or a centerboard (of the 16 ordered so far, just three are going out the door with the latter). The transom is a work of art unto itself, with a sensational boarding platform that is basically a back porch, and even a retractable, telescoping passerelle when swanning about the Med. I do go back and forth on hull windows, often depending on whether I’m on or off a boat at the time. To my eye, the half-dozen vertical windows to each side do detract from the yacht’s grandeur, but I sure do appreciate all the natural light and tasty views when I’m nestled aboard. OK, we’ll keep them.

Space will limit me from going on and on, which I’d otherwise be very happy to do. But the big things are kind of obvious on the 595 (the massive sail plan, for instance, tamed by a hydraulic vang and furlers, electric winches and an in-mast furling mainsail with excellent vertical battens). Which makes the (relatively not-so) little things stand out more. Even under power, the boat is one of the quietest I’ve ever experienced; the engine-room insulation is astounding, and when gliding upwind under sail, nary a creak or groan is to be heard. Raise the floorboards and gaze upon as well-executed a plumbing and manifold arrangement as you’ll ever see, all serviced by just a pair of massive raw-water intake valves to port and starboard. This is maintenance access to die for.

There are, of course, multiple interior layouts and floor plans possible, with furniture and cabinetry exquisitely rendered in your choice of cherry, maple and oak (big oak guy here…for me, light is right). Check out the Oyster website and prepare to linger a while.

Back at the helm, enjoying myself immensely, I was tempted when passing all the other boats (and we were always passing them) to offer them that little Queen Elizabeth half-wave thingy that she does so well. I couldn’t help it. Steering the Oyster 595 made me feel royal.

Pleasantly surprised, service is good so is the food. Great selection of Fusion food, a mixture of Italian, Japanese, European, Asian etc. A pleasantly nice dining experience, highly recommended, a must try!

Thank you for your feedback and invite you to have lunch or dinner again aboard the ship in an atmosphere of high standards of yacht hospitality.

everything was perfect - the food, the service, the desserts were the best, nice atmosphere and the location - magical

Best food, best view in Moscow. absolutely faultless from arrival to finish. Best risotto i had for many years absolutely perfectly cooked. The view on Ukrainian hotel and the white house by night is amazing

Had to wait for the food for 1.5 hours and then another 20 minutes for the check. Finally called for the manager and he offered... a 10% discount as a compensation. Simply pathetic! The food is mediocre at best. Not bad per se, but one... would expect something better considering the prices. There are many places to eat in area that are much better. Avoid this one at all costs. Food is very expensive, very pretentious, doesn't worth that money. Portions are very small. We ordered ravioli and there were 4! Four raviolis! For almost 15 euros. Then we asked to bring us dessert menu but nothing, they didn't even bothered, so we payed and left... without dessert. Very poor service for that price. More

This is a very good restaurant. The food is really good, maybe the best in Moscow. The service is also good. The view from the restaurant is great. The prices are very high.

I often visit this restaurant and must say it’s one of the best in Moscow in terms of quality and service. Staff really try hard to make sure that you are happy and satisfied. Customer service is a huge problem in Moscow but Chaika sets... a great example for others in the industry! Food is delicious and the menu has lots of options for everyone! Atmosphere is great and view is beautiful on the embankment. Special thanks to German & Oleg! More

Thank you for your feedback! Again aboard the yacht restaurant "Chaika" in accordance with the high standards of yacht hospitality.

Highly recommended, great location in the city center of Moscow with a superb atmosphere. Too many menu choices, though all delicious!

Thx a lot for your review! We are looking forward to see you in our restaurants.

Visited this lovely restaurant with a friend of mine. It was relaxingly warm August evening - so the place on the river seemed like a good idea. We came quite early and the restaurant was not full. The hostesses kindly offered several places to sit... and we chose to sit on the sofas. We had some wine, which was good. We struggled a bit when deciding about the food as few options (scallops) were not available. Fish on ice on display did not look very fresh. To be honest it was an unusually hot August and it is probably understandable that some see food options were not available. However, we did manage to order something and sat waiting and looking onto the river. My long-legged friend struggled sitting at the low sofa and the manager noticed that, offering as a very good, proper table beside the open window. It was nice touch and I was very pleased by their polite observations and immediate reaction to solve the problem. Food was quite good and presentation was perfect. Perhaps I can something about the food, but 1 visit is not enough to criticize or make a definitive opinion. Overall, quality place, which of course, does not come cheap. I would recommend this restaurant without hesitation. More

Good afternoon! Thank you for your detailed feedback! We are looking forward to seeing you again, we are sure that you will be delighted with our dishes!

Watch the movie here –

From 2004, to designs by Holman & Pye – her interior is enormous. So much she thinks that she’s a 50 footer…

With lovely oak veneers and a chequerboard sole, she is bright and airy and comes with a fantastic owners’ cabin and two good guest cabins.

Totally reworked in this ownership including – new copper bottom, rebuild of rig and new standing rigging, new sails, watermaker overhaul, engine deep service and new membrane, total rework of electricals and plumbing, new upholstery and safety gear – the list goes on and on.

City Street Guides by f.d. walker: A Street Photography Guide to Moscow, Russia

moscow-guide-cover

*A series of guides on shooting Street Photography in cities around the world. Find the best spots to shoot, things to capture, street walks, street tips, safety concerns, and more for cities around the world. I have personally researched, explored and shot Street Photography in every city that I create a guide for. So you can be ready to capture the streets as soon as you step outside with your camera!

At over 12 million people, Moscow is the largest city in Russia and second largest in Europe by population ( Istanbul is #1). An urban, cosmopolitan metropolis with more than enough glitz and glam to cater to the elite, but without losing its fair share of Soviet era roughness around the edges. It can be fast paced, brash, busy, and trendy like other big cities, but it has its blend of West meets Russia atmosphere and beauty that provides plenty of unique interest. The Red Square is as famous as it gets, but there’s so much more to this city, including the most beautiful subway system you’ve ever seen. It would take years to capture all of Moscow, but that means you have an endless amount of areas to discover.

oyster yacht rocas

So here’s a Street Photography guide so you can be ready to capture all that Moscow has to offer before you even arrive!

  • Patriarch’s Pond
  • Old Arbat Street
  • Maroseyka Street
  • Tverskoy Boulevard

Top 5 Street Spots:

1. red square.

The Red Square is the most famous square in not just Russia, but all of Eastern Europe. The name actually doesn’t come from the color of the bricks or communism, but from the name in Russian, Krásnaya, once meaning “beautiful” before its meaning changed to “red.” This large plaza is what you see on the cover of guide books and magazines for Moscow, with St. Basil’s Cathedral being the center piece next to Lenin’s Mausoleum surrounded by the Kremlin Wall. Of course, the Red Square attracts hordes of tourist due to the main attractions, but all that activity around an interesting atmosphere does provide street photo opportunities. It’s also the central square connecting to the city’s major streets, providing a good starting point to explore outward.

oyster yacht rocas

You’ll also find the popular pedestrian only Nikolskaya Street connecting the Red Square to Lubyanka Square. This line of expensive shops includes plenty of activity, while also leading you to another popular square. Filled with history rivaling any city, the Red Square and surrounding areas are the heart and soul of Russia.

oyster yacht rocas

2. Patriarch’s Ponds

Patriarch’s Ponds is one of the most exclusive neighborhoods in Moscow. Despite the name being plural, there’s only one large pond, but it’s worth a visit with your camera. It’s a popular spot for locals and expats to come relax or take a stroll around the pond. You get an interesting mix of young and old too, from young love to “babushkas” feeding pigeons. It’s a very peaceful park atmosphere in one of the nicer areas within the city center, while bringing enough activity for street photography.

oyster yacht rocas

The pond is shallow and in the winter becomes a popular spot for ice-skating too. The area is also well-known for the location in the famous Russian novel, The Master and Margarita.

3. Old Arbat (Stary Arbat)

Old Arbat is the most famous pedestrian street in Moscow, and dating back to the 15th century, also one of its oldest. Originally, it was an area of trade, but soon became the most prestigious residential area in Moscow. During the 18th century, Arbat started attracting the city’s scholars and artists, including Alexander Pushkin. Cafes lined the streets and impressive homes filled the neighborhood. Since then, New Arbat street was created as a highway in the area, while Old Arbat was paved for a 1km pedestrian only walkway.

oyster yacht rocas

Due to the historic buildings, famous artists that lived here, and the bohemian atmosphere, Old Arbat has become a big attraction for tourists today. Now, there’s a mix of cafes, restaurants, souvenir shops, street performers, street merchants and other attractions for visitors, and some locals, to come enjoy. It can get really busy here and there’s usually something interesting going on so it’s a good street to come walk with your camera for guaranteed life.

4. Gorky Park

One of the most famous places in Moscow is Gorky Park. The official name is Maxim Gorky’s Central Park of Culture & Leisure, which gives you an idea of what goes on here. When built, it was the first of its kind in the Soviet Union. Divided into two parts, it stretches along Moscow River. One end contains fair rides, foods stands, tennis courts, a sports club, a lake for boat rides, and more. This end brings more active life due to its number of attractions, while the other end is more relaxed, where you’ll find gardens, trees, older buildings, and an outdoor amphitheater.

oyster yacht rocas

Gorky Park attracts mostly locals so it’s a good spot to capture the non-tourist side of Moscow life. Muscovites come here to escape the city and unwind in a picturesque setting. The park remains alive outside of the warmer months too, especially when the lake turns into the city’s largest outdoor skating rink. I’d recommend taking the metro out here to spend at least half a day exploring the massive park’s life with your camera.

5. Maroseyka Street

Maroseyka Street is a popular area not too far from the Red Square. The long, winding street turns into Pokrovka and is lined with restaurants, cafes, bars and places to stay. It’s actually where I like to stay when I’m in Moscow due to its location and solid street photography opportunities itself. You have Kitay-gorod station near and if you keep walking southwest, you’ll get to the Red Square. But if you walk northwest, as it changes to Pokrovka, you can find a long street of activity for photography with its own interesting atmosphere.

oyster yacht rocas

6. Tverskoy Boulevard

Tverskoy Boulevard is the oldest and longest boulevard in Moscow, beginning at the end of Nikitsky Boulevard, and finishing at Pushkin Square, a spot to come for activity itself. The boulevard is made up of two avenues, with pedestrian walkways in-between. You’ll find grass, shrubbery, trees, benches and more walking it’s almost kilometer length. Many people come here to enjoy some relaxation, walk their dog, or just to use it to walk wherever they’re going. Its center location also provides a nice place to walk with your camera near plenty of other spots you’ll want to check out anyway.

Sample Street Walk:

For a full day of Street Photography, covering some of the best spots, you can follow this sample street walk for Moscow:

  • Start your morning walking around the Red Square (1), while exploring the surrounding area, including Nikolskaya Street
  • Then walk northwest to Patriarch’s Ponds (2) and slowly walk the pond and surrounding area with your camera
  • Next, walk east to the Pushkin Monument and stroll down Tverskoy Boulevard (6)
  • Once Tverskoy Boulevard (6) ends, it will turn into Nikitsky Boulevard. Follow this down until you get to the start of Old Arbat Street (3), across from Arbatskaya station
  • After you’re done walking down Old Arbat Street (3) for more street photography, spend some time checking out Moscow’s beautiful metro stations
  • To finish off the day with more street photography, get off the metro near Red Square (1) again, Maroseyka Street (5) or wherever you’re staying for the night.

3 Things I’ll Remember about Shooting in Moscow:

1. museum metro.

The Moscow metro system was the first underground railway system in the Soviet Union and today includes 203 stations across 340km of routes. The elaborate system has some of the deepest stations in the world too, with escalators that seem to go on forever. None of this is what makes it so special, though. Many of its stations feel like stepping inside a museum, making it without a doubt the most interesting and beautiful metro system I’ve been in.

oyster yacht rocas

When built, Stalin wanted to make the metro stations “palaces for the people” with marble, chandeliers, and grand architecture. The best part is the variety of architecture and styles used, making many of the stations a completely different experience visually. You could easily spend a whole day traveling the stations and there are even tours available for people who wish to do just that. My advice, though, would be just to buy a ticket and hop on and off at different stations, while exploring different lines. The museum-like surrounding mixed with the crowds of characters can make for a great photography experience.

oyster yacht rocas

Since there are so many stations, here are some of my favorites to check out:

  • Novoslobodskaya
  • Mayakovskaya
  • Elektrozavodskaya
  • Komsomolskaya
  • Ploschad Revolyutsii
  • Dostoyevskaya
  • Prospekt Mira

oyster yacht rocas

2. Moscow is Big

It’s no secret that Moscow is a big city, but it can feel even bigger with how spread out much of it is. This is especially true if you compare it to cities outside of Asia. If I compared it to cities in Europe, I’d probably say only Istanbul would warrant more time to really discover the depths of this city. Most only explore around the Red Square and surrounding area, but that is such a small part of the city. Although, that central area does give you plenty to see on its own.

oyster yacht rocas

Fortunately, I had a good friend living in the city to show me around, but it opened up my eyes even more to how much there is to discover in Moscow. It’s a big city with a variety of atmosphere that can take you from “east” to “west” and trendy to rugged depending on where you go. I’d imagine you’d have to live here a while to really know the city.

3. Cosmopolitan Mix of East meets West

Modern skyscrapers mixed with amazing architecture, a world-class metro system with museum-like beauty, trendy fashion and chic clubs, Moscow is a rich mix of Russian culture and history in a more western cosmopolitan package. There is a push to keep the Russian culture, while also pushing forward with a modern metropolis the whole world will envy. This comes with an impressive skyline, that continues to grow, and endless modernities, but with soviet nostalgia and atmosphere mixed in for good measure.

oyster yacht rocas

Mixed in with this grand western cosmopolitan atmosphere, is a strong national pride in Russia. This includes their famous leader, Vladimir Putin. Maybe no other place will you see a country’s leader more often. All over, from the pricey tourist shops to the underground walkway stalls, you’ll find goods with Putin’s likeness covering them. From t-shirts to magnets to Matryoshka dolls. There’s a strong national pride that can be seen around the city, which also extends to their leader. Moscow is many things. It’s East meets West, modernizations meets Soviet era, and a whole lot more.

What To Do For a Street Photography Break?:

Eat at a stolovaya.

Stolovayas are Russian cafeterias that became popular in the Soviet days. You grab a tray and walk down the line of freshly prepared local dishes, and select whatever you want from the chefs. They’re usually inexpensive and a much better value than restaurants, while giving you the opportunity to try from a wide selection of everyday Russian food. They’re also very tasty. I always include some borsch on my tray and go from there. The places themselves are all over Moscow and usually come with Soviet-era aesthetics to complete the experience.

oyster yacht rocas

Street Safety Score: 7

*As always, no place is completely safe! So when I talk about safety, I’m speaking in general comparison to other places. Always take precaution, be smart, observe your surroundings and trust your instincts anywhere you go!

Being the 2nd largest city in Europe with over 12 million people, you’re going to have your dangerous areas, but for the most part, it feels safe walking around. Russia is statistically higher in crime compared to most of Europe, but this generally doesn’t apply to tourists and visitors. Around the Red Square and surrounding city center, you should feel completely safe walking around. Pick pocketing can happen, but no more than other touristic places. I always explore Moscow freely without coming across too much to worry about. It’s a spread out city, though, so of course it matters where you are. Just use basic street smarts, know where you are and Moscow shouldn’t give you a problem.

oyster yacht rocas

People’s Reaction Score: 7

Moscow is fast paced, big city life, which usually means people aren’t too concerned with you, or your camera. I don’t find people notice or pay much attention to me when I’m out taking photos in Moscow. For the most part, people just go about their day. You shouldn’t get too many looks or concern. But it can depend on the area you are in. The more you stick out, the more you might get noticed with suspicions. I’ve never had any problems in Moscow, or Russia, but just be careful who you’re taking a photo of if you get out of the city center. Other than that, it’s about average for reactions.

oyster yacht rocas

Street Tips:

Learn the alphabet .

Much of Moscow, including the metro system, doesn’t use english. The Russian alphabet uses letters from the Cyrillic script, which if you aren’t familiar with it and don’t know the sounds, can be hard to decipher the words. This is most important for street names and metro stops when trying to get around. It can save confusion and make it easier getting around if you learn the basic alphabet. At the very least then, you can sound out the words to see which are similar in the english conversion, which can help matching them to maps. When out shooting street photography, getting around is as important as anything. So save yourself some time and frustration by learning the Russian Alphabet.

oyster yacht rocas

Use the metro

While Saint-Petersburg feels very walkable for a city its size, Moscow can feel very spread out, even for its bigger size. Outside of the Red Square area, you can have plenty of walking before getting anywhere very interesting, so you’ll need to take the metro a lot if you really want to explore the city. Maps are deceiving here too, it will always be further than it looks.

oyster yacht rocas

Another reason it’s less walkable than Saint-Petersburg is its completely different set-up. Moscow’s streets are mostly contstructed in rings with narrow, winding streets in-between. This is common with medieval city cities that used to be confined by walls, but you usually don’t have it in a city this massive. Saint-Petersburg has a more grid-like pattern that also uses the canals to help you know your way around. When it comes to navigating on foot in Moscow, it can be more difficult, so bring a map and take the metro when needed. It’s why Moscow’s metro carries more passengers per day than the London and Paris subways combined.

Explore other areas if you have time

Moscow is really big. While most people stay around the Red Square within the Boulevard Ring, there’s so much more to the city. I covered some other spots outside of this circle, but if you really want to see the city, you’ll need time. If you do have time, some other areas I’d check out first are Zamoskvarechye, along some of the south and western Moscow.

oyster yacht rocas

Inspiration:

For some more inspiration, you can look through the Street Photography of Moscow photographer Artem Zhitenev  and check out 33 of my photos taken in Moscow .

Conclusion:

Moscow’s name brings a certain mystique, but once you’re there it might bring a different atmosphere than you expect. It’s big and sprawling, but beautiful in many ways. It can feel like a European capital on a grand scale, but you can definitely find its Russian side in there.

oyster yacht rocas

The urban sprawl of Moscow can be intimidating, but give it enough time and you’ll be rewarded with plenty to discover. All with the world’s best metro system to take you around.

I hope this guide can help you start to experience some of what Moscow contains. So grab your camera and capture all that Moscow has to offer for Street Photography!

WHAT WE SAY. With the 655, performance was an established criterion from the outset. Designer, Rob Humphreys, created a set of hull lines with a relatively fine entry forward and a clean run aft. Add a low centre of gravity keel, a modern high aspect rudder and powerful sail plan and the result is a fast yacht that is a pleasure to sail.

  9. Oyster 655

One of the first things I noticed about the Oyster 655 is that this is a big boat. Her LOA of 67 feet, 7 inches and beam of 18 feet, 5 inches easily accommodated the five of us for our test sail. "Five is a really comfortable number for a long passage," said the Peter Lloyd, the British owner of Matchmaker, our test 655.
