Describe your image

We can provide motor boat design services starting with a basic preliminary design and ending with production drawings and files. We don't necessarily do everyhing on every boat we work on, some of our clients, for example, prefer to hire us only for the exterior design or just to develope the hull lines, we are perfectly happy with that and we are used to cooperate with other designers, naval architects and engineers.

We always keep budgets in mind and we design things according to our clients needs.  We always design boats that are buildable and, if the client demand for it, we can design boats that are very easy to build.

Our strenght is knowing boats very well and being able to deal with almost all of the different aspects of yacht design. 

Preliminary Design 

During the preliminary design stage we prepare a profile sketch and the preliminary GA of the boat.

Hull Design

Some of our clients ask us to focus on the hull lines development, while the shipyard or other designers take care of the other aspects of the design process. We have quite an extensive list of succesfully navigating hulls, among which some are 70/80 knots racing boats. We have been using CFD to validate our design for years.

Exterior Design

You already have a perfectly seaworth and performing hull and want us to create a beatiful exterior  design based on it ? No problem. We like to design timeless exteriors, trying to stay coherent with the current trends, we know the history of leisure boats and yachts because we love them. We focus on boat design, and we have been obsessing on boats for all of our life. Some of our creations have been around for many years and still look fresh and stunning. This is our strenght, we try to design boats with a long life cycle so that our client's  investment will last in time. We also know very well how boats are built so if our client's budget is limited we know how to design boats that can be built with fewer moulds and minimal complications. 

Interior Styling

We do interior styling and decor and we provide the client or shipyard with 2D GA, detailed 3D surfaces and renders. We do not prepare deatiled production drawings as we are not an architectural firm. 

Technical Design

We can help on the technical stuff as well. FRP structural design, stability, weight calculations.

Yacht Designer, has been creating motor boats and yachts from 2004, succesfuly  collaborating with a number of shipyards  on more than 60 projects. A deep passion for boats goes hand in hand with a strong interest for technological innovation, be it 3D printing, CFD, advanced rendering engines or AI applications.

Lara Merino is currently taking the lead in the studio following Fernando Merino's steps after his 25 year experience in the business. 

With an Architecture Degree, Lara stepped in the naval industry in 2012. 

After working several years in cruise ships she enrolled as a student in the Master in Yacht Design in Politecnico di Milano, Italy; only to enhance her passion for the yachting world. 

Since then the main projects undertaken by the studio have been private yacht refits, yacht supplies and residential design projects.

Since 2019 the studio is expanding to a second office in Valencia, Spain.

In the yacht industry we are able to comply efficiency and modern design both in the interior as well as the exterior design. Every project turns into a challenge to overcome, which pushes us to improve ourselves in every way.  Always working as a team and with the basis of extensive experience, quality, proximity and the application of new technologies as traveling companions.

We have undertaken projects in multiple shipyards around the globe, such as Barreras (Vigo), Astican (Canarias), Elexalde (Bilbao), Keppel Shipyard (Singapore), Astander (Santander), Astilleros de Palma (Mallorca).

Motor Yacht Icon 73 Milano is a 73.3 metre luxury superyacht of immaculate design offering spacious accommodation for twelve guests in total.

ICON Yachts from the Netherlands have again indulged into Italian styling, joining forces to create this formidable and striking 73m thoroughbred ICON 73 MILANO super-yacht design study. A striking interpretation made by the Italian design studio Hot Lab based on the proven ICON technology, the 6 decks layout is tailored to present three spacious guest suites and a further two super sized 34 square meter VIPs. Icon 73 Milano Yacht also boasts a full owner’s deck with a 140 square meter of private terrace and helicopter landing pad access.

Striking yet timeless, the Hot Lab exterior styling is a perfect blend of architectural and automotive design setting a new milestone in luxury life style to indulge into the ultimate super yacht experience. The light flooded interior spaces provide calm and well defined ergonomics with owner and guest comfort and pleasure as primary design focus. A revival of a pre-rationalistic architectural tradition crowned with a reminder of a bygone sophistication with the library and cigar rooms.

The steel and glass structure on the aft sun deck was originally intended by Hot Lab to be a greenhouse, it is in fact a multifunctional space that can be dedicated to a gym, wellness area or more simply as a semi-open lounge. The use of glass renders this structure visually light and perfectly integrated with the shapes of the Icon 73 Milano motoryacht. Again, glass is the element that also characterizes the upper deck: a large portion of the aft decking features flush skylights that allow light circulation with the aft main deck area underneath.

In typical ICON tradition the bow area of the Main deck is dedicated to the tender garage with side shell openings capable of housing two boats up to 8.5m long. Adorned with a dynamic exterior the new Icon 73 Milano features an enormous iconic beach club as a direct extension of the luxurious guest accommodation on the lower deck. The large transom platform opens up to the sea for the ultimate beach experience on the water. The large teak folding platform furnished with sun beds is in direct continuity with the sheltered lounge area featuring bar, sauna and diving equipment store. A scenic corridor that crosses the engine room and links the beach club to the guest area which includes a fully equipped gym.

The transom door can also lowered to create a safe and convenient shallow beach. At night the large glass panes illuminate the space and sea into a pool of LED colours that can be programmed depending on the mood or for party / disco entertainment.

The propulsion options for motor yacht Icon 73 Milano are ranging from a conventional twin MTU common rail diesel shaft drives to a super efficient diesel electro pod drive setup; naval architecture and engineering comes from ICON .

For the visualization of the Icon 73 Milano concept Hot Lab is working with the new technology provide by Wacom: the new Cintiq 21UX interactive pen display.

To celebrate the 25th anniversary of SaloneSatellite , a hub dedicated to designers under 35, there will an exhibition at the Triennale di Milano museum exploring the program’s inception, evolution, and future, along with the talents who have gone on to succeed in the industry. Working in the realm of collectible luxury design, Baranzate Ateliers and Galerie Philia focus on slow craft and hand-forged goods. The former is occupying a 1950s industrial building on the city’s outskirts to show work from experimental creators such as Zaventem Ateliers , Arno Declercq , and Studio Khachatryan ; the last will present a new collection of stone and wood furniture. Near the Fondazione Prada, at Spazio CB32 , Galerie Philia will stage the first solo show of French designer and sculptor Jérôme Pereira. In Celestial Attraction, Pereira, who trained in geophysics, plays with materials—one chandelier includes branches found in the forests near his studio—to create functional art with an otherworldly feel. 

Other must-see-and-do highlights include an open studio with Piero Lissoni , where guests can grab an espresso and see the architect’s latest work; Kohler’s annual large-scale installation (this year in partnership with SR_A , the design studio of Samuel Ross); and anything hosted by Nilufar , a multilocation art and design gallery founded by Nina Yashar, whose forward-thinking approach to conceiving spaces has galvanized her place at the forefront of the industry for more than three decades. This year, Yashar, who’s known for juxtaposing rare vintage pieces with contemporary works, will curate Time Traveler, a journey through the annals of design history meant to look at how objects can reflect who we are as humans—and how we arrived where we are today.

Marcello gandini has passed away at 85.

Forward-thinking Italian car designer Marcello Gandini passed away on March 13th, 2024 in Rivoli, Turin. He was 85 years old. Marcello Gandini was one of the visionary car designers of the ‘60s, bringing his then-progressive scissor doors to life in some of his vehicle models, including the Lamborghini Countach. Between the ‘60s and the ‘70s, Marcello Gandini stepped in as the chief designer of Bertone, succeeding Giorgetto Giurguiaro. During his tenure, he designed some of the popular sports cars of the period, such as the Lamborghini Miura, the Alfa Romeo 33 Stradale, the Lancia Stratos , the Ferrari Dino 308 GT4, and the Maserati Khamsin.

Even after his stint at Bertone, Marcello Gandini continued his career as a vehicle designer for high-end sports car, giving birth to Maserati Chubasco and Shamal, Lamborghini Diablo and Acosta, and Renault Supercinq and Safrane. In 2019, BMW revived his 1970s Garmisch concept car at the Concorso d’Eleganza. His contribution to visionary car designs and the automotive industry was previously honored by the Polytechnic of Turin which the Italian car designer attended on January 12th, 2024. During the event, Marcello Gandini was awarded an honorary degree in mechanical engineering, and in the courtyard of the university, about fifteen historic cars that he designed for Carrozzeria Bertone were exhibited, some of which came from the collection of the Automotoclub Storico Italiano.

In his speech when he received the honorary degree at the Polytechnic of Turin, Marcello Gandini said ‘I am honored to receive this. It is the recognition of a journey that began at 16 years old, when, with the money that had been assigned to me to buy a Latin book, I instead purchased a mechanics text, Endothermic Engines by Dante Giacosa. Engineering, applied to car design and planning, was my first passion and the common thread throughout my profession.’ Before passing away, Marcello Gandini was slated to complete a training platform he was designing and working on for the Doha car museum, in collaboration with Qatar University.
